[SV_VIMEO id=”48633979″] While most of the mountain bike industry is busy burying the 26″ wheel with barrow loads of big wheels, Trek are one of the few companies who have actually invested in the 26″ trail bike market for 2013. The revamped Fuel EX line up is more capable than ever. It really is the …

An amazingly capable trail bike - there aren't many situations the EX can't handle. Gorgeous construction. Reliable spec and we love the Reverb Stealth seat post! Pretty good value too.

Rear shock tune feels a little too firm when 'Trail' mode is engaged. Fork is noisy. Would be better without a triple ring crankset.

Trek Fuel EX 5 Deore Gen 5

Fuel EX 5 is the gateway to full suspension trail bikes. Trail-taming front and rear suspension, a Shimano 1x12 drivetrain, a dropper post for getting low on descents, and hydraulic disc brakes make Fuel EX 5 a high-value, high-performance mountain bike with exceptional versatility. It's right for you if… You're ready to go full suspension, and you want a versatile trail bike at a great value. You want a ride that's sure-footed, capable, and responsive so you can stay in control no matter where you're riding. The tech you get A lightweight aluminum frame with a Knock Block steerer stop to protect against spinning bars. A 140mm RockShox Recon Silver fork, 130mm of rear travel with an X-Fusion Pro 2 shock, a durable 12-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain, dropper post, and hydraulic disc brakes. The final word You get full suspension performance without the sticker shock. Fuel EX 5 has the same frame technology as our higher-end alloy Fuel EX models with parts chosen to keep the price tag low and stoke level high. Why you'll love it: - You get a high-end ride at an exceptional value with frame features like Boost148 and ABP that give you confident handling and room to upgrade parts as your skills grow - It has the capability of far more expensive trail bikes: it shreds singletrack and can even handle the occasional XC or enduro race - The dropper post lets you lower your saddle on the fly so it's out of the way on descents - The RockShox fork's DebonAir spring can easily be adjusted for a specific rider weight, and it's lighter than a coil spring - We expanded our size range to ensure a better fit for all riders. And, you get the fastest wheel that fits your frame: XS frames get 27.5" wheels, S frames get to choose between 27.5" or 29", and sizes M to XL get 29" wheels

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

2011 trek fuel ex 5

Smaller frames (XS and S) have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.

Trek Fuel EX5.5 review

Time-proven all-round trail machine

2011 trek fuel ex 5

Trek’s well-established EX platform has had a major revamp over the past couple of years, with a complete pivot, linkage and swingarm redesign that completely changes the system’s performance. But not, unfortunately, at this level.

The EX7 and below don’t get the all-new platform just yet. Instead, the EX5.5 offers the tried-and-tested old-skool EX setup in an air-shocked, coil-forked format.

Ride & handling: Tidy handling, and tunable rear end works well in all trail conditions

The EX frame design belongs to an era when 120mm of rear wheel travel was seen as nudging the boundary between cross-country and, for want of a better term, freeride 'lite’. Times have moved on a little and many more recent 120mm bikes are less overtly ‘all-mountain’ in design.

The Trek’s none the worse for its mildly old-skool approach. It actually feels a lot less like a stripped-down freerider and a lot more like a slightly overweight cross-country bike.

More than 30lb of metal, plastic and rubber is never going to win any awards on the climbs. But the EX5.5 is a surprisingly willing accomplice, helped in no small part by a rear end that’s either reassuringly bob-free (with the shock’s ProPedal platform damping switched on) or surprisingly supple over the technical stuff.

Frame: Good attention to detail combined with tried and tested suspension platform

Functional simplicity defines the Trek’s asymmetric swingarm, rocker-activated shock design. The conventionally profiled front end is made up of subtly curved and profiled top and down tubes, while the impressively cutaway shock linkage plates pivot just behind the heavily gusseted and reinforced seat tube.

Although there’s only room for a single set of bottle mounts inside the main triangle, Trek’s designers have gamely added a second set in the muddiest location on the bike, just ahead of the bottom bracket

The swingarm features a distinctively lop-sided arrangement that increases stiffness without putting the driveside chainstay in a chain-fouling position.

Mud clearance is impressively ample up top, but rather compromised down at the chainstays. Even so, by full-suss standards this is a relatively gloop-friendly design.

Equipment: Trustworthy shock, gruppo and finishing kit, but coil fork is too stiff for most riders

The springy bits are a mixed bag. On the plus side, it’s good to see the trustworthy Fox Float RP2 air shock holding up the rear wheel. There’s adjustable damping for both compression and rebound, giving the EX5.5 owner a degree of adjustment that isn’t always available at this price.

On the other hand, the RockShox Tora coil fork isn’t nearly as impressive. Coil forks are perfectly capable of performing well, but they’re harder to set up for different rider weights – and riders under 12 stone are likely to find the stock springs too stiff.

Worse, the Tora’s cheap underpinnings were betrayed on our test sample by a reluctance to get moving until we’d hit a bump hard enough.

Shimano’s evergreen Deore groupset provides the Trek’s stop-and-go parts. It may lack the glitz of the newer SLX group, but it’s still a reliable benchmark for clean shifting and trouble-free stopping.

And Trek’s in-house Bontrager brand, which provides just about everything else on the EX5.5, is a match for anything else out there.

2009 Trek EX 5.5 vs. 2011 Trek EX 5

  • Add to quote

I'm debating between these two bikes: TrekBikes.com Bike Archive | 2009 Fuel EX 5.5 TrekBikes.com Bike Archive | 2011 Fuel EX 5 The '11 is $1300 new in a LBS with free life time adjustments and tune ups. The '09 is $800 used on craigslist and comes as is. This will be my first FS bike, well first mountain bike for that matter. I'm not sure which has the better components, most likely the '11. But I'd like to get some veteran riders opinions.

Being a rider of both the old fuel style and the new fuel I would say go with the 2011. You cant beat the lifetime of free tuneups. That alone is well worth the 500 bucks. Plus the new fuels ride so much better then the old ones. What ever bike you decide on have fun with the FS Mac

Thanks Mac. What about the components? Is there a major difference between the two?

You are getting much new and better components on the 2011. Plus as I said earlier, the new fuels are amazing on the trails. Go with the 2011 you wont be disappointed Mac

I think I'll do that, thanks!

2011 trek fuel ex 5

Not sure if your seller gave you any tips, but for even better performance of your rear and front suspension, you can check the right setup for your weight here: Trek Suspension Setup

I Gave them my weight and they said they adjusted the shocks to my weight but I'll double check it, thanks

Kinda confused on adjusting the fork. That link says a pressure for my weight... How do I adjust that, if it's even possible

2011 trek fuel ex 5

I think that's a mistake in the website calculator. The EX 5 has a coil spring fork, which means no air pressure to adjust. I'd adjust it according to the recommendations of the 2012 EX 5 fork calculation for your weight.

Jboyd is right. You'll have to check the fork with Fuel Ex 5 of 2012 from the site. Also, i guess your seller gave you the sag meter and a bontrager pump that comes with the bike for the rear shock.

Well I bought it from a LBS and bought a shock pump, bike came with the sag meter. The rear shock is adjusted for my weight as well as the rebound. On the fork, the rebound says 11 clicks out, yet it doesn't turn 11 clicks... I'm not referring to the preload, I'm talking about the reb adjustment on the bottom of the fork

11 clicks out is for the adjustment on top left. Don't know if it is wrong on Trek's site. The bottom adjustment on the bottom right of the fork it's for slow or fast speeds. If you want to go fast you set it at the "bunny", if you go slow you set it on the "turtle". When i had the Recon on the bike (now my bike has Fox RL on it), i had it always on fast, and the pre-load on the top left of the fork was at 8 clicks out (i am 93 kilos). Hope that helps mate. Ask your LBS to make it sure. In general, how do you feel on the bike while on trails? Edit: And yieh, you can't add any pressure on Recon with pump. It's wrong on trek's site.

I know for sure that 2 of them have race fuel at the pump. The 76 station on Coffee Rd in Modesto and the station in sunol off 680 both have it. The sunol station also has their own blends for 93, 95, and I believe 98 octane.

I'll be posting up prices for Sears Point Later Today. If you happen to go to any of these others please let us know what the current prices are.
