How This Designer Gave a New Alabama Home an Old Soul

The circa 2021 home in Birmingham could pass for a historic landmark.

To that end, Keenan worked with architect Brian Barrett to infuse the 6,800-square-foot property with character, intimacy, and charm. The kitchen and breakfast room are designed to showcase a full wall of windows—whose wooden trim is painted in what Keenan calls a "peppy" green—and make the most of the two-story arched and beamed ceiling. With its taupe and green palette, this essential gathering space "is a bouquet of all the colors of the house," which, Keenan says, "are driven by the antique rug in the sitting area that the clients purchased years ago." It's a room designed for lingering over family meals—an antique table, dining chairs, and bench invite gatherings, and one wall of the kitchen opens to a bright blue scullery, created to let the homeowner indulge in her passion for baking bread. The same attention to detail permeates the rest of the home. In the open-plan living space, archways and aged wood beams frame the double-height ceilings, while the walls are covered in tongue-and-groove paneling painted a serene putty green. Floors are either reclaimed white oak or natural stone, and there are built-in bookcases and custom cabinetry throughout. Dormer windows spotlight the garden views, and every single window frame features wide, beveled trim. " This house is all about patina," Keenan says.

Much of that patina comes from the owners' existing collection of French and English antiques—and their willingness to layer pattern, texture, and print. "It was really just a matter of incorporating all their treasured things," Keenan says of her clients, who have always appreciated older, more storied homes. To ensure cohesion, Keenan covered all the new cabinetry and construction in aged, saturated hues drawn from the owner's needlepoint pillows and textiles. "The color was a natural extension; that was really fun for us," Keenan says.

Fun might just be the home's defining word. Despite its old-world air, treasured heirlooms, and abundance of prints, the space is entirely free of fussiness. "The house is full of beautiful antiques," Keenan says. "But the way you feel inside it is that you just want to relax."

This charming little nook, located off a breezeway that connects the main house to the guest house and garage, echoes the kitchen's color palette. Keenan calls these stairs the "pajama stairs" since they provide a back way to the main floor; a favorite runner from Hiltz-Lauber makes them feel extra cozy. The homeowners' 19th-century English plate rack and antique English pine server hold more pieces from their collections. Light: Vaughan Designs. The millwork and cabinets are painted the same bold color for continuity. Cabinets with unlacquered brass cup pulls by Brandino Brass and paint in Beau Geste by Pratt & Lambert echo the colors of the antique rug, as do Roman shades by GP&J Baker.

Eric Clapton: Birmingham 2024 Set List

Eric Clapton’s 2024 World Tour visited the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England on May 13th, eleven years to the day that he last performed in the city.

Eric dedicated “River of Tears” (from his 1998 album, Pilgrim ) in honor of David Sanborn, who passed away on Sunday. Eric first worked with the legendary saxophonist in 1983 when they both played on sessions for Roger Water’s The Pros and Cons of Hitch-Hiking . With Michael Kamen, they went on to score all of the soundtracks for the  Lethal Weapon film franchise. They performed together many times, including the 1997 Legends Jazz Tour and the 1999 Crossroads Concert at Madison Square Garden. David also played on Eric’s 1990 album, Journeyman.

A young Birmingham man was shot to death outside his family's home Wednesday, May 15, 2024, on Avenue W. (Carol Robinson)

A teen was found shot to death in a wooded area near his west Birmingham home late Wednesday night.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Jaquavius James Weston. Coroner’s officials said Weston was 19, but his family said he was 18.

West Precinct officers responded to the Ensley Highlands neighborhood at 11:23 p.m. after dispatchers received two Shot Spotter alerts in the area, one registering 12 rounds and the other indicating six rounds.

The location was in the 2400 block of Avenue W.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said when officers arrived, they encountered two people who lived in that area.

They told police they had just arrived home and didn’t see anything unusual or hear any shots fired.

However, they reported that another family member had called them saying shots were fired outside the home.

Wade said officers canvassed the area but did not find any houses or cars that appeared to be damaged by bullets.

“They didn’t see anything unusual,’’ Wade said, “and they left the location.”

At 11:53 p.m., police were called back to the home.

Wade said after officers left the first time, the family continued to the investigate the area and that’s when they found Weston about 15 feet into a wooded area near their house.

Weston was unresponsive on the ground and pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service at 12:07 a.m.

Wade said investigators learned a family member heard the victim on the phone engaged in an argument with someone. Soon after, shots were fired, and she did not see the victim after that.

No one is in custody.

Weston is Birmingham’s 49th homicide this year. Of those, five have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 72 homicides including the 49 in Birmingham.

Birmingham Barons receive a sneak peek of renovations at Rickwood Field ahead of MLB game in June

Barons will take the field for minor league game on june 18.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Birmingham Barons walked it off against Chattanooga Wednesday afternoon at Regions Field and followed it up with a walkthrough of Rickwood Field ahead of the MLB coming to town later in June.

Fresh new grass, brand new dugouts and plenty of other renovations are taking place at the historic field.

One thing that has remained the same are the historic elements like the rusty seats and bleachers, the iconic scoreboard in the outfield, and the outside of the stadium.

Lots of excitement before the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants take the field on June 20, but the Barons are also excited because they will play the Montgomery Gray Sox as part of the MiLB game taking place on June 18.

“So neat,” Barons skipper Sergio Santos said. “It’s something these guys get to experience. We’re lucky, we’re fortunate, and it’s something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives.”

Barons pitching coach John Ely mentioned how it looks so much different than when he participated in a game on the field back in 2009.

“They kept all the right things all the right ways,” Ely said. “There were some safety hazards when I played here back in 2009 that I’m glad aren’t here anymore for the sake of our players. We have some really special players coming to grace this field.”

Roughly 25% of the most architecturally significant homes in the Park Cities have been razed over the past 15 years. Many of these losses are staggering, including houses by several of the most important architects in Texas. North Texas cities must do more to protect their architectural heritage.

One new organization helping to do so is the Charles Stevens Dilbeck Architecture Conservancy , which will sponsor a tour of four standout residences designed by Charles Dilbeck on Saturday. Those four homes, located on the four corners of a single intersection in University Park, are known today as the “Four Sisters.”

Dilbeck was a popularly admired and prodigiously talented architect who designed approximately 200 residences in Dallas, Fort Worth and other cities throughout North Texas, ranging in size and location from the smallest cottages in Oak Cliff to the largest estates in Preston Hollow. In the Park Cities, Dilbeck designed not only custom homes but speculative houses as well, including numerous residences in subdivisions along Preston Road and south of Lovers Lane, as well as more than 25 houses on Bryn Mawr Drive.

With the exception of the houses on Bryn Mawr, half of which have been demolished, most of the architect’s residences in Dallas are still standing.

The Four Sisters, at the corners of Shenandoah Street and Douglas Avenue, were designed by Dilbeck and constructed by the Meserole Brothers starting in 1934. The surrounding development, Preston Place, was a centerpiece of the Dallas high-end real estate market during the 1930s.

The preservation of architecturally significant homes is an ongoing challenge for Preservation Dallas and Preservation Park Cities, whose recent notable publication, The Houses of the Park Cities: An Architectural Guide to the Historic Houses of Highland Park and University Park Texas , authored by my friend and colleague Larry Good, documents many of the 170 homes that have been “landmarked” by the organization.

As a starting point for his research, I suggested to Larry and his team that they take a look at a book published in 2008, Great American Suburbs: The Homes of the Park Cities, Dallas , to get a grasp of how many residences chosen for photography had been demolished.

I was the co-author of that book, along with Virginia Savage McAlester and Prudence Mackintosh. To our collective horror, Larry and his team at Preservation Park Cities identified 50 of the houses pictured in our book that were no longer standing.

This disturbing trend is by no means confined to the Park Cities, nor is it a recent phenomenon. A cursory review of the book Dallas Rediscovered : A Photographic Chronicle of Urban Expansion 1870-1925, written by William McDonald and published in 1978 by the Dallas Historical Society, reveals the tragic loss of the city’s entire Victorian-era architectural legacy in the neighborhoods of Oak Lawn, Oak Cliff and East Dallas. These losses were, and continue to be, a consequence of economic pressures and property speculation enacted to achieve the sacred mantra known as “highest and best use.”

The creation and implementation of historic districts and conservation districts are tools that can only delay the demolition of qualifying historic structures, but not prevent their ultimate destruction. The proposed boundary expansion of the Lakewood Conservation District has become a contentious issue, pitting neighbors who champion the stabilization of the neighborhood’s architectural character against neighbors who want to protect their property rights. Deed restrictions and conservation easements, especially when coupled with tax benefits, are more effective tools for private owners who wish to protect their property in the future.

Home tours, like the one on Saturday, are another effective instrument in drawing attention to architecturally significant homes and to the work of important architects. Since 1997, Preservation Dallas home tours have highlighted the residential work of such noted Dallas architects as Dilbeck, Hal Thompson, C.D. Hutsell, O’Neil Ford and Frank Welch.

Dilbeck was a populist architect, and his careful approach to design resulted in warm and inviting homes infused with the rough-hewn character of a French Norman cottage or a West Texas ranch house. His homes were “eclectic” rather than “historicist,” revealing his early self-education in the construction trades. He never imitated but intuitively combined diverse sources and experiences to formulate a distinctive and idiosyncratic residential style that was entirely suitable to Dallas. Yet his architectural contemporaries practicing in Dallas during the 1930s and ‘40s eschewed Dilbeck’s idiosyncratic style for the security and straightforwardness of main-stream revivalism.

Now, almost a century later, let’s not make the same mistake.

Preservation Burlington tour visits homes on South Union, South Willard, Howard streets

The Preservation Burlington homes tour returns in June, providing the curious a chance to get a sneak peek into sites of architectural and historic significance in the city.

This year’s properties range from a mansion on Willard Street that is now a boutique hotel to a home in the South End that once served as a market. The self-guided tour takes place June 8 and lets participants see a half-dozen homes inside and out. Community volunteers are available to help those taking the tour.

Here are some details about the sites on the homes tour, as provided by Preservation Burlington:

South Union Street, 1869 Colonial Revival-style

Built for Irish immigrant Patrick Rourke and his Irish Canadian wife, Ellen, this home survived an 1878 fire. “The Rourke House is significant for its massing, front porch with pedimented gable supported by doric columns, 6-panel front door flanked by leaded sidelights and topped with a leaded transom, 6/1 wooden sash, triple grouped windows over the main entrance, modillion block cornice with full entablature, and narrow corner pilasters,” according to Preservation Burlington. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the South Union Street Historic District in 1988. 

South Union Street, 1898 Shingle-style

This home belonged to Frank Boynton, who ran the shoe store Fletcher and Boynton on Church Street. “This asymmetrical home features two distinctive roof types commonly used in Shingle style architecture—gambrel facing the street, and jerkin head above the north entrance,” according to Preservation Burlington. “Other significant and character-defining features are the home’s massing, distinctive wood-shingled second-story, and unusual fenestration: round-headed 9/1 gable end windows, 6/1 sash on the 2nd story, and 6/2 sash on the first story.”  The Boynton House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the South Union Street Historic District in 1988.

South Union Street, circa 1845 Greek Revival-style

This house belonged to nationally acclaimed poet, lawyer, newspaper editor, Vermont attorney general and gubernatorial candidate John Godfrey Saxe and around 1870 was altered in the Italianate style. “Its unusual massing is due to the blending of the two architectural styles - at the core is a Greek Revival-style wood-frame house with American bond brick veneer, wide cornice, and entablature,” according to Preservation Burlington. The property was heavily damaged by a 2020 fire but has been refurbished. The Saxe House was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the South Union Street Historic District in 1988.

South Willard Street, 1882 Colonial Revival-style

The brick home at South Willard and Spruce Streets was built by architect A.B. Fisher for former state senator and bank executive Charles W. Woodhouse. “On the west, facing the lake, is a classically detailed porch that opens onto a grand, double staircase with redstone base and marble balustrade and stair treads,” according to Preservation Burlington. In 1984 the building became a retirement home and later the Willard Street Inn. In 2022 the property became a boutique hotel called Blind Tiger Burlington . The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the South Willard Street Historic District in 1988.

Howard Street, circa 1886 Vernacular Queen Anne-style

Brick mason Albert F. Warner acquired the lot in August 1883 and built his home. “With its front gable orientation, the house is similar to many built in Burlington at that time, except for its extended and dormered right roof slope,” according to Preservation Burlington. The house has been both a rental property and a private residence over the years.

Howard Street, 1923 Colonial Revival-style

This house belonged to Hermengilde Blanchard and his wife, Eveline, who had six daughters and three sons. The family operated a neighborhood grocery store on the lower level of the house, separating it from the kitchen with a simple curtain, according to Preservation Burlington, which says the house has only had three owners in its 101 years.
