Bus and coach travel in France

Regional bus services.

Many of France’s 100 departments operate their own rural bus services. Most towns also have their own local bus services that may link up with neighbouring towns. Local bus services are best for destinations that are not served by the rail network such as some places in Brittany, Normandy as well as services in Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur (PACA). There are also many bus services that exist to complement the rail network, which are run by SNCF, which also runs the French rail network; these bus services appear on train timetables. Regional bus services are cheap as they are priced to be an affordable option for daily travel for local residents who do not have access to their own car. Although fares vary from one department to another, most fares are only around one or two euro for a one-way trip. Departmental rural bus networks in France include:

This department comprises much of the French Riviera and its hinterland, which is served by several bus companies although most lines are run by Lignes d’Azur , which incorporates both urban bus routes within Nice and longer-distance routes throughout the department.  Symitam  is a good place to start to see which bus company serves the area you want to travel in. Although Lignes d’Azur provides most bus services within the Alpes-Maritimes department, smaller companies like  Envibus (which serves the region around Antibes),  Sillages  (which serves the Grasse region) and Zest  (which serves Monaco and Menton) may have better coverage within a specific area.

If you’re planning a trip to France, you may be wondering how to get around. There are several options for transportation, including train, car, and coach. Here’s a look at each option and what you need to know about traveling in France by each method.

Traveling by Train in France

Traveling by train is a fast and convenient way to see France. The country has an extensive rail network, and trains are well-equipped with comfortable seats and plenty of legroom. Advantages and Disadvantages of Taking the Train

In France, the train is a popular mode of transportation. It is efficient and speedy, and it offers breathtaking views of the countryside. However, there are also some drawbacks to taking the train. First of all, it can be quite expensive. Secondly, there is often a lot of crowding, especially during peak travel times.

And finally, trains can be delayed or canceled due to weather or other problems. Overall, the advantages of taking the train in France outweigh the disadvantages. For those who can afford it, the train is an excellent way to see the country and travel quickly between cities.

Booking Train Tickets

Booking train tickets in France is a simple process, whether you are booking online or in person. If booking online, you will need to create an account with the French railway company SNCF. Once you have created an account, you can enter your travel dates and browse the available ticket options.

When selecting your ticket, be sure to choose the correct type of ticket for your journey. For example, if you are planning to travel with a child under the age of 4, you will need to purchase a child ticket. If you are unsure which type of ticket to purchase, you can always contact SNCF customer service for assistance.

When buying your train ticket, you will also need to select a seat. Seat selections can be made at the time of booking or later on, depending on your preference. If you plan to make changes to your seat selection, later on, be sure to note the date and time when these changes must be made.

Once you have successfully booked your train ticket, be sure to print out a copy of your confirmation email or take a screenshot of the confirmation page. You will need to present this confirmation when boarding the train. With a little bit of planning, booking train tickets in France can be a seamless process.

Tips for Boarding the Train

Train travel is a convenient way to see France, with its expansive rail network connecting even the most remote corners of the country. Here are some tips for boarding the train in France:

First, when you arrive at the station, go to the quai (platform) indicated on your ticket. Once you find your train car, look for your seat number on the outside of the car and on your ticket. If your seat is occupied, you may ask the person sitting there to move.

Second, if you have large luggage, there is usually space near the doors to store them. For smaller items, there is an overhead storage rack above each seat.

Third, when boarding or exiting the train, be sure to mind the gap between the platform and the train car.

Finally, remember that smoking is not allowed on French trains.

Following these simple tips will ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience when boarding the train in France.

Traveling by Train in France

Traveling by Car in France

France is a beautiful country with a lot to offer tourists. unfortunately, much of its beauty is hidden away from the major highways. For those who want to see France at its best, it is essential to travel by car. This allows you to explore the hidden gems of the country, as well as its more famous landmarks.

When traveling by car, be sure to drive on the right-hand side of the road and keep your headlights on at all times. Additionally, remember that French law requires all drivers to carry a Valid Driver’s License, registration, and proof of insurance.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Traveling by Car

Traveling by car has a number of advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is that it gives travelers the freedom to explore at their own pace and choose their own destinations. They can also stop whenever they want to take in the sights or grab a bite to eat.

However, car travel can be expensive, especially if travelers are renting a car or driving their own vehicle. It can also be time-consuming, as travelers may have to deal with traffic jams and other delays. In addition, car travel can be dangerous, particularly if drivers are not familiar with the roads or the local conditions. When deciding whether to travel by car, tourists should weigh the pros and cons carefully to determine what suits their needs best.

Renting a Car

Renting a car in France is a great way to see the country at your own pace. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before renting a car.

First, you will need to have a valid driver’s license from your home country. You will also need to be at least 21 years old and have a credit card in order to rent a car. Additionally, it is important to familiarize yourself with French traffic laws before driving.

Third, keep in mind that most French rental cars use diesel fuel, so make sure you fill up before heading out on the open road. With these tips in mind, renting a car in France is an easy and convenient way to explore all that the country has to offer.

Lastly, if you’re renting a car in France, it’s a good idea to get insurance. While French law requires all drivers to have third-party liability coverage, this may not be enough if you’re involved in an accident, collision damage waiver (CDW) or theft protection should also be considered.

These optional coverages can vary significantly in price, so it’s important to shop around. Some credit cards offer rental car insurance, but these policies often have limits and exclusions that you should be aware of. When getting insurance for your rental car in France, be sure to read the fine print so that you know exactly what you’re covered for.

Using Taxis

Taxis are a convenient and popular way to get around in France. In most cases, they are less expensive than renting a car, and they can be especially useful if you do not speak French or are unfamiliar with the area. When hailing a taxi, it is important to remember that there is usually a surcharge for luggage, so be sure to factor this into your fare.

In addition, many taxis accept credit cards, but it is always a good idea to have some cash on hand in case you need it. Finally, be sure to ask for a receipt when you pay your fare, as this can be helpful if you need to file a complaint later. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your experience with taxis in France is a positive one.

Tips for Driving on Roads and Highways

When driving on roads and highways in France, there are a few things to keep in mind:

First, it is important to stay on the right side of the road. In France, as in many other European countries, traffic flows on the right. This can be confusing for drivers who are used to driving on the left, so it is important to pay attention and stay focused.

Second, French roads can be very crowded, so it is important to be patient and courteous when behind the wheel. Making sudden lane changes or cutting off other drivers will only create frustration and delays.

Finally, remember that speed limits in France are generally lower than they are in other countries. It is important to obey the posted speed limits in order to avoid getting a ticket. By following these simple tips, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable driving experience on France’s roads and highways.

Traveling by Car in France

Traveling by Coach in France

If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, you may want to consider traveling by coach. Though it may take a bit longer than other forms of travel, traveling by coach allows you to see the country in a way that you can’t from inside a car or train. You’ll have the opportunity to admire the scenery as you travel down winding roads and through quaint villages.

And, since coaches typically make frequent stops, you’ll also have the chance to stretch your legs and explore your surroundings.  And with a professional and experienced driver at the wheel, you can sit back and relax as you take in the sights and sounds of this beautiful country. In addition, coaches can be less comfortable than other modes of transportation, particularly if you are traveling for a long period of time. Overall, traveling by coach in France has both its advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to consider all factors before making a decision about how to travel.

Booking Tickets

When it comes to booking tickets for the coach in France, there are a few things you need to know. First of all, it’s important to book your tickets in advance. While you can usually find tickets for sale at the station, it’s often cheaper and easier to book online or over the phone.

Secondly, make sure you have all the necessary information when booking your ticket. This includes your destination, departure date and time, and the number of passengers. Finally, keep in mind that coach tickets are non-refundable, so be sure of your travel plans before making your purchase.

Tips for Boarding the Coach

If you’re planning on taking a coach journey in France, there are a few things to keep in mind when boarding the coach:

First, plan your trip in advance and book your tickets early to get the best seats on the coach.

Second, check in at least 30 minutes before departure time to allow plenty of time to board the coach.

Third, when boarding the coach, have your passport and ticket ready to present to the driver.

Fourth, find your seat and stow your luggage in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you.

Lastly, be prepared for a long journey; stock up on snacks and drinks, and bring along a good book or other entertainment for the trip.

With these tips, you’ll be sure to have a smooth and enjoyable journey when traveling by coach in France.

Language: French is the official language. Currency : Euro Time Zone: Central European Standard Time = GMT+1, Central European Summer Time = GMT+2 Tipping: Tips are not compulsory and in France there are no generally established rules, although it is common practice to leave a sum amounting to around 10% of the bill if you are satisfied with the service you have received.

France - an introduction

It may be a country renowned for its good food and wine but coach holidays to France will soon reveal that gastronomy is a just a small (and no doubt garlicky) but tasty portion of the other delights on offer. From the poignant landing beaches of Normandy to the alpine air of Chamonix , the chateaux of the unspoilt Loire Valley to landscapes brushed with rolling vineyards, France has a lot to fall in love with.

With Disneyland Paris and the capital forming two of the country's biggest draws, it's hard to overlook Paris on a coach holiday to France. Disneyland Paris offers families world-class attractions within a stone's throw of the UK with the chance to explore Paris at the same time, and Paris is such a romantic and cultural powerhouse that it speaks for itself. The fact that you could be cruising down the Seine one day, then cheering on the  Tour de France or the adrenalin-buzzing  Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe the next only adds to its excitement. Coach tours to these quintessentially French events do exist, and are a fantastic way to combine a moment in history with some sightseeing.

Away from Paris, a number of impressive destinations continue to add to that 'je ne sais quoi'. Cycle at low tide to the stunning backdrop of  Mont St Michel  or take a relaxing walk around  Monet's Garden   in  Giverny . Slurp oysters in  Gujan Mestras  – the oyster farming capital of  Bordeaux  - and find out what goes into making real champagne with a tour of Moet and Chandon. Enter the world of William the Conqueror and admire the magnificent  Bayeux Tapestry , holiday like an A-Lister on the  star-studded French Riviera  or take an exciting road trip through the beautiful Loire Valley . With so many France coach holidays on offer, culture , gastro and history lovers should not be disappointed.

Paris The capital city of Paris is said to be one of the most romantic and chic cities in the world, so why not see if you agree? It is home to a vast array of museums, iconic landmarks, designer shops, and for the foodies amongst you, some veritable gastronomic delights.

Disneyland Paris For those with families or for people who enjoy theme parks then head to Disneyland Paris. There are two theme parks to choose from: Disneyland Park or Walt Disney Studios Park, with a range of on and off site hotels on offer. Most trips to Disneyland Paris incorporate tickets to both park during your stay and some also include Paris. As well as the rides, there are spectacular family parades and shows to be enjoyed by all. Look out for seasonal events like the Disneyland Bonfire Spectacular and fireworks at New Year.

Normandy Normandy is a fascinating area to visit; not only is it full of natural beauty with gardens including Monet's Garden at Giverney and pretty coastal and harbour towns such as Deauville and Honfleur, it is packed full of historic sites such as the D Day landing beaches.

The town of Grasse (the world's capital of perfume) isn't far off and offers visitors the opportunity to visit the world-famous lavender perfumery.

To help you have an enjoyable holiday in France, take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the  Foreign and Commonwealth Office  (FCO):

Health and Travel Insurance When visiting France you should always ensure you have a free  UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)  before travelling. The GHIC isn't a substitute for travel and medical insurance, however it does entitle you to state-provided medical treatment should it become necessary during your trip. Any treatment is on the same terms as the French nationals. You should always make sure you have adequate travel insurance in addition to the GHIC and also access to funds which can cover the cost of any medical treatments and also repatriation.

Local Laws and Customs

You must be able to prove your identity  either by providing documents when asked or within 4 hours at a police station. Identity documents can be a passport, a photo driving licence or other documentation provided by a government body.

In France concealing your face in public places is illegal, which includes full veils, balaclavas or any other mask or garment that conceals the face. Failure to comply with this ban can incur a maximum fine of €150. The law doesn't provide any exemption for tourists and visitors.

Entry Requirements If you are planning to visit France, you must meet the following passport requirements.

Your passport must be: - Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’) - Valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

Please note: If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. These extra months do not count towards your passport validity.

Visas You can travel to France for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Please note that any previous visits you have made to the Schengen countries within the last 180 days will count towards your 90-day limit.

Passport stamping Your passport will be stamped if you enter or exit the Schengen area through France as a visitor. These passport stamps are used to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit in the Schengen area.

Any other nationality looking to visit France must contact the local embassy to check visa requirements.

Pucker up, because the the number of times the French kiss as a form of greeting varies depending on region. In Corsica, the tally can be as many as 5!

Bus France

Travelling by bus in France wasn’t nearly as popular as it is today. Just several years ago, long-distance and inter-urban transportation was basically non-existent. Majority of these long-distance buses were just passing through the country and continuing to other European destinations. In 2015, a state law nicknamed the Macron Law was voted. The law liberalized coach travel in France , allowing other bus companies to start operating intercity routes. Based on the recent data, passenger travel by coach in France keeps increasing each year. Public transportation in larger cities is also well-developed, as are buses from the airports and bus tours.

Table of Contents

Intercity buses in France

As mentioned above, liberalization of the bus market in France allowed new, smaller bus companies to start operating long-distance routes. Before 2015, the majority of passengers used state-owned railway company SNCF for inter-regional transportation. However, bus travel on these distances is a cheaper and faster alternative . That is why more and more people use coach travel in the country.

There are two main bus companies in France which serve the majority of intercity routes – Flixbus and BlaBlaBus. French subsidiary of Flixbus absorbed several smaller companies and their routes, such as Eurolines and Megabus. On the other hand, BlaBlaBus, formerly known as OuiBus and iDBUS, has partnered with Starshipper.

According to the latest data, about 9 million people travel with intercity coaches in France, which is an increase of 26% when compared to the previous year. This only proves that intercity travel in France is becoming more and more popular.

Timetables and tickets

Timetable for intercity, regional and local buses can be easily found online. As an alternative, you could always get the information at the main bus station . COVID-19 pandemic has altered people’s behaviour regarding ticket purchase. To avoid physical contact, more and more French people buy tickets online. In some French regions, certain companies offering urban or suburban lines have implemented ticket purchase via SMS . Of course, each company has its own policy, so we recommend checking if this option is available. As for the ticket prices, there shouldn’t be major differences between buying a ticket online and at the bus station.

Domestic bus routes

Domestic bus routes in France can be divided into urban and interurban routes. Urban network is usually organized by each city or municipality, while interurban transport comprises bus routes between cities in different French regions. Generally, departures between larger cities are more frequent, while connections between smaller cities or villages are not that frequent. Below, we have listed some of the most popular domestic bus routes in France . If a specific route is not in the list, use our search form to find your desired combination.

International bus routes

Position of France allows it to be well-connected with other neighbouring countries . That is why the majority of international bus routes go to Spain , Italy , Germany and the countries of Benelux. Additionally, one of the most popular routes is the one connecting Paris with London , with several daily departures between two cities. Below we have listed some of the most popular international lines from French cities.

Bus from the airports

Due to its size, France has dozens of airports where passengers can fly into . Depending on the airport and its location, passengers can choose between metro, trains or buses to reach the nearby cities. However, airport buses, often called navettes are sometimes easier and cheaper ways of transportation. Basically, the majority of French airports offer an airport shuttle to the city . In addition, these buses can connect airports with other nearby cities and destinations. Below are listed the most common airports in France, and you can read more about airport shuttles in each of the following posts.

Bus companies in France

Being a popular country for tourists, France has dozens of bus companies operating in the country. Apart from the ones serving regional and intercity routes, there are a lot of French bus companies offering bus tours, airport transportation and trips to ski resorts. Usually companies combine regular transport with other services such as bus rental. Below we have listed some of the most popular bus companies in France.

Bus stations in France

Similar to other larger European countries, bus stations in French cities are usually located in the city centre. Bigger cities like Paris or Lyon have multiple bus stations, while smaller cities usually have one. In either case, stations can be recognized by the sign saying Gare Routière , followed by the city name. Since 2015 and the expansion of intercity routes, some bus stations have been renovated to accommodate more buses. In larger cities, bus stations usually have amenities such as toilets, coffee bars, ATMs, kiosks and so on. To get more information, click on the city name below.

Hire a coach in France

Renting a bus in France should not be a hassle, as many bus companies offer this option, in addition to providing regular bus lines and bus tours. As expected, bus rental is centered around larger cities like Paris or Lyon. Moreover, you could rent a coach from other popular tourist destinations, especially in Côte d’Azur region and cities like Marseilles or Nice. Depending on the company, most buses are in decent condition and equipped with all the necessary amenities for longer trips. The majority of larger companies have dedicated English speaking staff to deal with bus charter, but it is often easier to let a travel agent handle the contact with a bus company.

City buses in France

City buses in France operate at a local or regional level, serving larger French cities and their greater areas. Some of the public bus companies are subsidiaries of a larger group, while others are smaller, private companies. In about 30 cities in France, public transport is free of charge . In other cases, tickets for public buses can be bought at machines located in the bus stations, at local tobacco shops or on-board from the driver. Below are listed companies which provide public transportation in larger cities in France. To get more information, click on the name of each city.

FAQ – Bus France

Since Covid-19 measures keep changing for each country, it is best to be updated regularly if you plan a trip to France. All the information given by the French government regarding Coronavirus and travel restrictions can be found here . Also, we recommend that you check the restrictions for your own country, as it is possible that additional things like negative Covid-19 test or self-isolation would be required for your return. French bus companies are obliged to comply with new regulations such as mandatory mask wear or keeping a distance in the buses, so make sure to check this information beforehand.

Latest information say that 2 major bus companies in France, Flixbus and BlaBlaBus don’t allow dogs in the buses, except for guide or assistance dogs. Other companies may allow pets, but be sure to check it before travelling.

Yes, traveling by bus in France is generally very safe.

If you’re travelling on a longer intercity bus route in France, it is highly probable that the bus will have Wi-Fi service. This of course depends on the bus company. Additionally, local city buses are usually equipped with wireless internet, but again, this varies depending on the city.

This again depends on the company. We recommend buying the ticket online, but if you insist on buying the ticket on the bus, make sure to have the cash with you, as not all French bus companies accept credit cards.

Yes, in most cases buses are well-equipped and in good condition. Majority of buses travelling on longer intercity routes should be quite modern. Regional and urban buses can be in somewhat poorer conditions.

No, sleeping buses are not allowed within the European Union. If you prefer sleeping while traveling overnight, you will have to take the train if possible.

This again depends on the company. However, drivers on rental buses usually speak English. On other bus types, it’s better to assume they don’t.

Luggage in France is handled as anywhere else in Europe. Losing a suitcase could happen (e.g if a fellow passenger takes the wrong suitcase), but not that often. We recommend that you never keep valuable items in luggage for the hold!

For bus companies

If you operate a French bus company and would like to be included in this list, you are more than welcome to contact us , we also can offer you the access to an easy platform for managing bus rentals in France.

What people love about coach / bus tours in southern france.

We had a fabulous holiday. Our guide, Bruno was amazing and looked after us very well. He was interesting a fun and kind to all of the patrons. George was also an excellent ? driver and fun, happy and kind at all times. Our only problem was the Evergreen Laurel. they placed us in a room that was 36 degrees with broken air con. After we consulted the staff they could not shift us. Then as we stayed an extra night and were shifted. We were placed in a room with bed bugs and were bitten. I wouldn't recommend the hotel at all. The La defense was far better. Overall staff were excellent.
As a first-timer to Insight, and to group touring in general, I must say this trip was marvellous. France, of course, is so beautiful. Somehow each day managed to top the previous one. So many breathtaking moments. For me - my job was just to be where my guide, Emmanuelle, told me to be and try not to sleep through the alarm (whoopsie!). I didn’t have to deal with any of the details. What a vacation!! Emmanuelle was simply amazing - knowledgeable, organised, flexible and unendingly patient. I was tremendously impressed by her skill set - quite simply an excellent tour guide. A wonderful holiday - thoroughly recommend.
I really enjoyed my tour from Paris to Barcelona, everything was organised well. The bus driver was so nice and drove us around safe and the guide Bruno was very knowledgeable of the places we went and made it interesting as well with some humour. Because of the heatwave some of the eating places were uncomfotable due to no aircon.

Coach Travel in France

Tuesday 04 November 2014

The privileged status of the rail network in France has been to the detriment of national coach travel, but that may be all about to change.

Intercity coach travel in France is a very marginal transport service, with only 110,000, (0.0005%!), of long-distance passengers who travel by coach, compared with around 4% in the United Kingdom.

In part, the paucity of coach travel has been due to the extensive rail, plane and motorway networks in France, which offer easy travel across most parts of the country.

However, as the French Competition Authority ( l'Autorité de la concurrence ) pointed out in a report published earlier this year, the major reason for the lack of inter-city coach travel has been the regulatory framework in existence.

It is a framework specifically written to benefit of SNCF, the French rail operator, which has effectively locked out coach operators from entering the market.

Historically close ties exist between the local councils and the French rail network, with the councils providing substantial subsidies towards rail services.

Add to the mix the power and influence of the cheminots , and it has meant that until recently few coach lines had been established.

Cross-Border Framework

It has only been a result of the European Regulation 1073/2009 that matters have begun to change.

Under the terms of this regulation, coach operators within Europe are permitted to transport passengers between two points within a country (called ' cabotage '), provided it was only part of international journey within the European Union.

Thus, a coach leaving from London for Barcelona could let down or pick up passengers in Lille and Paris, provided it did not constitute the principal activity of the service.

When this regulation was transposed into French law in 2011 it was interpreted in the strictest sense, with a double 50% rule that applies.

Under this rule, between any two stops on French soil the number of passengers travelling only within France must be less than 50% of the total number of passengers between these two stops, and the annual turnover of the service from all domestic routes must be less than 50 % of revenues from transport services performed within the national territory. In addition, there cannot be more than one stop within any region.

Moreover, in order to even obtain this right, operators are required to participate in a complex, costly and time-consuming application process to the French Ministry of Transport, that gives no guarantee their application will be approved.

One of the main grounds on which it may be refused is that it threatened the 'economic equilibrium' of the existing public service ( "si leur existence compromet l'équilibre économique d'un contrat de service public de transport de personnes" ). In other words, the application could be refused if it was a potential threat to a competing rail service.

Even if no competition issue existed, there still remains for the operators the need to obtain access to a station for embarking and disembarking passengers, an exercise that is not without difficulty due to the local council and SNCF control of most of the bus and rail stations that might be used for this purpose.

Inter-Regional Services

Nevertheless, even under the constraints of these regulations, over the past three years some significant progress has been made.

In September 2011, with the mixed blessing of the local councils, the French government authorised the creation of inter-city coach routes through the auspices of the 'Eurolines' brand, which in France operates as a public-private joint venture.

The group now operates to around 60 destinations within France, but given the close involvement of the public authorities in this operation it is not surprising to find that many potentially popular and lucrative routes do not appear on the timetable for the service.

Thus, although you can go from Toulouse to Bayonne, Lyon, Orthez, Pau, Poitiers, Rennes, Tours and Valence on one of their coaches, there is no Toulouse-Paris or Toulouse-Bordeaux.

Separately, SNCF have themselves begun to see the potential of the coach market, so established their own coach travel subsidiary, called 'iDBUS', which they launched in July 2012.

The service runs inter-regional routes within France out of Aix-en-Provence, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Paris, and Toulouse, as well as a number of cross-border lines within Europe from some of these cities.

In a strange twist of irony, the iDBUS Chief Executive recently commented on the difficulties the business was incurring as a result of the double 50% rule imposed by the existing regulatory framework, a rule set up precisely to protect SNCF! Maria Harti, directrice générale of iDBUS, stated "Dans les gares routières, nous devons refuser aux clients de leur vendre un billet et, ensuite, ils voient le bus partir avec des places libres."

The newest entrant into the market is 'Stagecoach', competitor in the UK to the main operator National Express. This summer Stagecoach introduced a service between London, Paris, Toulouse and Barcelona through their low-cost megabus.com network, with prices that look very attractive. The service has other stops along the route in France for destinations elsewhere within Europe.

Projet Loi Macron

All of this is solid progress, but a lot more may well emerge in the next year or so with proposals recently announced by Emmanuel Macron, the French Finance Minister, to undertake a more substantial liberalisation of coach travel in France.

Although the details have yet to emerge, the announcement suggested that the paper chase authorisation process would be substantially reduced, so that some routes could be started without the need for any formal approval.

The Competition Authority itself recommended abolishing the approval process for all lines over 200 kilometres distance, and this may well be the approach finally adopted by the government.

However, as with any proposal for change in France, there is always a strong lobby of opposition, which has already emerged from the regional councils who have signalled to the government that they will be " vigilant in ensuring that the government's choices in favour of the liberalisation of coach services cannot be at the expense of efforts on behalf of regional rail travel for years ."

There is also a similar level of circumspection amongst the transport user groups, notably FNAU ( Fédération Nationale des Associations d'Usagers des Transports ), who, whilst they support the development of coach routes not properly served by rail, fear that unfettered competition will menace the future of some lines. So they stress that coach services should be " complementary, not competitive. "

The journey from London to France by Eurolines

France is connected with the UK by coach like no other European country - up to 6 direct environmentally friendly and comfortable Eurolines Plus services between London and Paris every day. The Eurolines' coaches are built to make your journey as comfortable as possible. Each coach has on-board toilet and washroom facilities, reclining seats and air-conditioning as standard. In addition to standard Eurolines coaches, London to Paris operates Eurolines Plus coaches. These are the same as standard Eurolines except you can enjoy extra leg room, free Wi-Fi and watch DVDs. Folding bikes are accepted. Sometimes the coach that picks you up from your departure point has only the final destination displayed on the front windscreen. This is because the majority of Eurolines routes include multiple stops and it would be impractical to display every stop on the front windscreen. Also, you may have booked a journey which requires a change of coach. In both examples, please ask the driver to confirm that his/her coach is going to the destination stated on your ticket.
Eurolines put the safety and comfort of passengers first, so the vehicles are equipped with a large number of safeguards. The operators are using modern vehicles with large panoramic windows and increased legroom. Eurolines coach services to France depart from Victoria Coach Station in London which is located close to Victoria Underground and bus stations. Eurolines coaches arrive at the Eurolines Coach Station, located by Gallieni subway stop. Buy a ticket online now .

The carrier provides service to any person who has purchased a ticket. Number of tickets for the designated route is limited to the number of seats. Having a valid ticket guarantees you use of the service (seat on the coach), however it does not reserve any particular place. Single and return tickets (with the indicated date and time) are for a specific journey, you cannot miss the departure, because you will lose the ticket. Best to buy tickets well in advance. Eurolines has many discounts for those who decide to purchase tickets in advance. Constant, although a slight discount is provided for youth, elderly and disabled people. Up to 50% discount is provided for children. Unless you get a good promotional fare, return fares are much cheaper than two single fares each way.

  • Before leaving home for your Eurolines service, check you have packed all documents and items needed for your journey, especially your ticket, passport (sometimes it is enough to travel with ID card) and if your journey requires a special visa to enter or transit.
  • Arrive at the Victoria Coach Station in London at least one hour before the departure time, as check-in proceedings are quite lengthy. Check-in commences one hour before departure and closes 15 minutes before to enable all customers to board and to ensure a prompt departure.
  • Your luggage should be marked tags bearing name, address and telephone. Please weigh your luggage at home.
  • Never accept other persons luggage for transport! Should you notice any luggage left unattended, never touch it! Report the fact to the station’s service staff immediately. Never leave your luggage unattended!
  • When approaching the check-in desk, have your passport and ticket ready. This will streamline the procedure.
  • Border control & customs: When going through security check, place all metal items such as keys, watches, belts with large buckles, mobile phones, walkmans, small change etc in the boxes, and place them on the conveyor belt of the X-ray machine together with your hand luggage & suitcases. It is advisable to place your overcoats in the boxes. This will streamline and facilitate security control.
  • If needed, remember to take your doctor’s certificates.

Check-In at London Victoria Coach Station

Check in commences one hour before departure and closes 15 minutes before, to enable all customers to board and to ensure a prompt departure. You should have your passports and other travel documents ready for inspection at check-in. A boarding card for each customer and luggage labels will be issued and customers will be advised from which gate their coach will leave. Check in time at other UK departure points is 30 minutes before departure. If the office for check-in is already closed, check-in takes place directly on the coach. Buy a ticket online now .

Check-In in France

In Paris (Gallieni) Eurolines Coach Station, Ave du Gen. de Gaulle check-in is one hour before departure at the counters. If there is a Eurolines office that is open close to your departure point you can check-in at the counter - otherwise directly with the driver. From all other French departure points you check-in with the driver of the coach. Services returning to London arrive in Victoria Coach Station’s Arrivals terminal, customers making onward coach connections will need to cross the street to the Departures terminal

Sea crossings

Once you get to Dover (for the ferry) or Folkestone (for the train) you’ll have to go through passport control – the driver or coach attendant will explain exactly where and when to get off. On entry at the ferry port or Eurotunnel terminal, customers will be required to disembark from the vehicle and pass through both UK and French Border Control offices and show their passports. In Folkestone and on board the ferry you can find a restaurant, shops, bars, cafes, arcade games and loads of sitting spaces – so you can keep well entertained for the 1 hour 30-minute crossing.

Will the international coach stop for a break? Of course, on the majority of services.  All international coach operators provide refreshment breaks on longer journeys, especially overnight services. The European law obliges the driver to take a break every four and a half hours.

Carriage of luggage

Each passenger is entitled to transport two pieces of primary luggage (suitcase, travel bag or backpack) of total weight not exceeding 30 kg. In addition to the main luggage, the passenger has the right to carry one piece of hand luggage weighing up to 5kg. Luggage exceeding the limit as mentioned earlier can be transported with the crew’s consent only if there is enough space in the luggage hold. For each additional luggage (1 piece, up to 25kg) or for exceeding the permissible weight of the primary baggage, the carrier shall charge a fee.

Our Accommodation page offers access to over one million verified accommodation reviews via Tripadvisor, allowing you to see what other people thought of a place before you book. And with rooms or hostel beds from as little as £3 per night, you can expect great value for money when you book with Europebus.

Travel insurance

The best way to protect against unexpected accidents is to buy travel insurance. In my opinion, so that the journey is stress-free, you should never travel without travel insurance. You can insure only for travel, it’s possible directly on the Eurolines website , during ticket purchase. You can also insure individually with another insurer. This will be the insurance that will apply during the journey and while in a foreign country. The insurance should cover: loss of cash and goods, cancellation of travel and medical treatment abroad. If you travel several times a year and want to save money, you may want to buy an annual insurance policy. Click here to buy insurance.

ROG addresses ongoing France head coach links and says he wants to win World Cup

coach travel france

Ronan O’Gara has talked up his future prospects in rugby, with the La Rochelle head coach admitting it was his “dream” to win the World Cup.

ROG has been in charge in the north west of France since 2019, with consecutive Champions Cups successes in 2022 and 2023 considerably raising his stock along the way.

Story continues below.

La Rochelle crashed out of this year’s edition of the tournament after a heavy semi-final defeat against Leinster, having bested Leo Cullen’s side in the two previous deciders. Turning his attentions to the future, O’Gara claimed he was bidding to “prove himself” for the France head coach’s job.

The Corkman acknowledged the fact that France had never hired a head coach hailing from outside the country, but pointed out that Andy Farrell’s Ireland successor could also come from distant shores.

He told RMC Radio’s Super Moscato Show : ‘I’m not French. I’m trying to prove myself and put my name into the debate.

‘It’s possible that, for Ireland, the next coach will be from New Zealand, South Africa, or Australia – that’s just the way it is.

‘I’d like to win a World Cup.

‘I dream of winning things, whether it’s with Ireland or France – I like it.’

It remains to be seen where the road will take O’Gara beyond his stint with La Rochelle, and with Farrell signed up with Ireland until 2027, any future involvement with his former international side appears remote for now.

He did, however, confirm that he would be seeking a head coach role wherever he ended up, as he cited the difficulties of not having the final say on matters – particularly having experienced the realities of head coaching.

He continued: ‘Be a member of the staff? I don’t think so.

‘When you’ve had a taste of the number one position, of those responsibilities, it’s difficult [to not be in overall charge].’
