How to find cheap flexible flights: Questions & Answers

What are the top 5 flexible flight search engines.

The top 5 flexible flight search engines, if you are searching for flexible flight dates, are Skyscanner, KAYAK, momondo, Kiwi.com and Google flights. These are powerful search engines with some form of calendar view showing the cheapest days to book your flight. Here at FlightsFinder, we use data from multiple aggregators to populate our flight calendar, making it one of the most complete you can see online. The difference with our search engine is that once you have identified the cheapest days to fly, you can then go on and compare all of the world's leading search engines from one dashboard, potentially saving you up to 20% off your next airline ticket.

How much can I save with flexible flights?

The number one factor affecting flight prices are the days you choose to fly. The savings can be truly remarkable if you look a month or two either side of your flight times or even check a few days. For example, if you wanted to fly to London from New York in May, It could set you back by about $442. However, our flexible search will tell you that the price will be around $300 in March. If you want to check a few days before or after your travel dates, select our check box in the flexible dates field that says +/- 3 days. To find the cheapest flight in the entire month, select 'whole month' and select' whole year' to find the best possible return flight price across the entire year.

How to find flexible flights that have no cancellation fees?

In a post covid world, it has become necessary to find tickets that you can amend quickly if unexpected events occur. Common issues that may mean you need to change your booking are the travel policies shifting of a country you intend on visiting by requiring you to quarantine on arrival or on your return, which may not be feasible. Or you may become ill, requiring you to change your travel plans. Whatever the case may be, many airlines charge a premium for you to change or amend your booking once made. To get around these exorbitant change fees, it is sometimes wise to look for flexible flights that have no change fees. You can find these 'no change fees' tickets on our site via our first flight search engine results. Select the filter that says 'no change fees', and we will show you the flights via KAYAK with flexible rebooking options for no extra charge. Just check the change fees for a regular booking to see if the price is lower than booking a flexible 'no change fee' flight.

How to use Skyscanner flexible dates?

Skyscanner has one of the world's most comprehensive flexible date flight engines. They offer users the ability to search from entire countries to 'everywhere' - for example, the United States to anywhere in the world. This search shows you the cheapest airports to fly to from your departing country. Moreover, Skyscanner lets you select on their calendar which month you would like to travel in (for a monthly overview) or select the 'cheapest month', which will tell you the cheapest month to fly in the whole year. They have flexible calendars for both one way and return flights. The downside to the Skyscanner flexible dates calendar is that it only shows flights found by users in the last four days, which sometimes mean the results can be outdated. Moreover, less travelled routes contain fewer historical prices and sometimes none. We use Skyscanner data to populate our calendars; the only difference is that we let you compare numerous flight comparison site results alongside Skyscanner results which often lead to savings, sometimes up to 20%.

How to use KAYAK flexible dates?

KAYAK has a handy 'explore' feature which shows you the best flexible flight deals plotted on an interactive global map. All you need is to enter your departure airport, and the map will show you the best domestic and international flight deals found by other KAYAK users in the last 48 hours. You can also refine your results by searching for a particular country, a specific month, direct flights or flights with stops, budget, duration and type of trip. Once again, because it relies on other users' historical usage, you may find that less searched for routes have little data about them. You can play around with their flexible calendar here: KAYAK/explore . Once you have found a deal on KAYAK, we encourage you to use our site to price check against multiple other aggregators on our website as, on occasion, they can beat the prices found on KAYAK.

How to use Google flights flexible dates?

Google flights have the fastest search engine on the planet, results load in seconds, and they have very comprehensive calendars which show you the cheapest days to travel in the entire month. You can see their flexible flight price calendars by selecting the 'date grid' or the 'price graph' buttons. The date grid presents data in a calendar view whilst the price graph shows you flights in bar graph form. The ITA matrix provides the data and is not dependent on previous searchers to populate it, making it some of the most comprehensive flexible flight data on the web. However, it is a fact that Google flights don't always get you the best possible deal due to the limited number of OTA's Google searches. To get the best possible benefit from them, we recommend you get the best dates to fly from their flexible calendars, then come to FlightsFinder.com and compare multiple aggregators on those dates and see if you can save even more. You can often save up to 20% more simply by checking numerous flight aggregators via our easy to use dashboard.

How to use Kiwi.com flexible dates?

Kiwi.com is the Czech Republic's biggest metasearch engine famous for finding cheap flights by virtual interlining, stitching together fares from airlines that traditionally do not work together. You can find their flexible flight calendars on their search results page by selecting the 'pricing table' or to view a bar graph of the lowest priced flights instead, pick 'price trends'. Their flexible flight results are very comprehensive, and you can find data on even the most obscure routes. Once again, we suggest finding the best days to fly by using our Flexi calendars then price checking their live results with our multi aggregator tab based flight dashboard to see if you can pinch a bit more off your ticket.

How to find the cheapest flexible flight 3 days before or after your flight

The Best Tools for Flexible Date Searches

' height=

See recent posts by Peter Thornton

If you have flexible travel dates, you’ll have a much easier time finding a cheap flight. Searching for flights only on specific travel dates leaves little wiggle room to find that amazing deal you’re looking for on your next trip. You can often save hundreds of dollars by simply flying when it’s cheap and sometimes it only requires shuffling your travel dates by a few days.

How to Find Cheap Flights with Flexible Travel Dates

While there is no magic day to buy a fare, there are certain times of the year and days of the week when it’s usually cheaper to fly . This varies by market but it is usually cheapest to fly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and in the shoulder seasons—late January to early March; May to early June; September to mid-November; and early December.

Flight Search Engines with the Best Flexible Date Tools

However, this is not an exact science and cheap flights can pop-up at any time. Luckily, there are some excellent tools out there that will search multiple travel dates at once so you can always find out when (and where) it’s cheapest to fly. Here are some of our favorite tools for finding the cheapest flights.

How to Use Google Flights to Find Cheap Flights

Google Flights flexible date calendar search

Pros: Fast, comprehensive filters integrated into the flex search, explore map.

Cons: Occasional price lag, limited OTA pricing, missing prices on some airlines.

Ever since Google acquired ITA Software, it has added more search features that make it the best overall flexible date search tool. To initiate a flexible date search with a calendar view, just enter a departure city, arrival city, and any desired travel dates. It will then show you a list of flights for those travel dates along with many other search filters where you can fine-tune your search by the number of stops, airlines, price range, flight times, connecting airports, flight duration, and even add any potential bag fees.

Pro Tip: You can enter up to 7 airports in both the departure or arrival fields to search for flights from or to multiple different cities at once. Just use the plus icon to the right of the "Where from?" field.

Google Flights search filters

Adjust the filters as you wish and then click on the calendar icon in the “departure date” field to see two months of pricing at once. You can easily scroll through the months to find the cheapest flights by clicking on the arrows on either side of the calendar. Adjust the trip length it searches for at the bottom left of the calendar box. Unfortunately, you can’t choose a range for the trip length and Google will only search for a specific trip length at one time. It may help to search one-way flights in each direction first and then combine cheap dates in a roundtrip search since not all airlines sell one-way tickets for half the roundtrip price.

If your dates are set in stone, but you’re flexible on where you want to travel, Google’s explore feature is an excellent tool to just browse where there are cheap flights on the map. Just enter your departure city and travel dates—leave the arrival city blank or just type in a general region such as “Europe” or “South America”. It will then give you a map view with prices all over the globe. You can zoom in/out and scroll around the world to find where it is cheap to fly on those dates.

Google Flights explore map

And for the holy grail of flexibility, just enter a departure city and choose the “flexible dates” radio button when choosing dates. It will give you the option to choose any month in the next six months or all months. And you can choose to search for a weekend, 1 week, or 2-week trip. The map will then show the best pricing from your city to destinations all over the world with those parameters.

Although I consider Google the best overall flexible date search tool, it’s not perfect. It does not show pricing on all airlines—most notably Southwest and often misses other airlines such as Aeromexico and Turkish Airlines. Occasionally, the pricing is off and will jump during the final step. Sometimes you can find lower prices on other search engines that link to smaller online travel agencies (OTAs) or airline sites that save the best fares for direct bookings.

If you want to get into an even more detailed search, you can try ITA’s matrix , but for a simpler and faster search tool with most of the same filters, I would recommend starting any flexible date search with Google Flights. But don’t forget about the others or you may miss out on a cheaper flight.

How to Use Kayak to Find Cheap Flights

Kayak flexible date search for cheap flights

Pros: Combines airlines, a thorough search of OTAs, holiday travel search.

Cons: Slow, filters don’t always adjust results, lag on updating prices.

Kayak is a good search tool for those who want to search for a cheap flight with a range of trip lengths. You may be willing to stay an extra day or two or leave a day earlier in order to find the best deal. To start a flexible date search, enter your departure and arrival cities (you can insert up to 3 in each). When choosing your dates, you’ll see color-coded approximate pricing on the calendar, but for a better flex search choose either “Weekend” or “Month” from the left-hand column.

The weekend search allows you search for cheap flights departing Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, returning Sunday or Monday, over a 4-week period. The month search allows you to choose a start date for the search and your desired trip duration. You can make this a set number or a range of up to 7 nights. For example, you can choose a trip length of 7 nights, 6-8 nights, 4-11 nights, or 26-33 nights, but not 10-20 nights. It will then search flights for 4 weeks from the start date and give you the results in a calendar view.

Kayak flexible date calendar for cheap flights

You can then adjust a number of filters on the side to refine your search, but be warned that these filters may not always adjust the prices in the calendar correctly. If you’ve done a roundtrip search, you’ll choose a departure date first and then it will give you a range of dates to choose for your return flight. Once you’ve chosen dates at the price you want, it will give you a specific flight. It’s always a good idea to click on the “find more options for the same dates” link in the bottom left of this pop-up. This will show you more flight options—some of which may even be a lower price.

Kayak is great at finding prices from many different OTAs, which means it may unearth cheaper flights than Google. It has some excellent search filters, but the pricing on the flexible date calendar doesn’t always line up when these are adjusted. Its major downfall is that it does not include all airlines and routings. Plus, it’s a little slow and clunky to use.

Kayak explore map

Kayak also has an explore tool similar to Google. Just enter a departure city and leave the arrival blank by clicking on the “Can’t decide where to go?” text. This gives you some great flexibility by being able to choose any month up to a year out or “anytime” to search for cheap flights to anywhere throughout the year. It also has a holiday search tool where you can search for cheap flights during specific holiday periods.

How to Use Skyscanner to Find Cheap Flights

Skycanner flexible dates cheap flight search

Pros: Simple flex search in list form, includes most airlines, wide range of OTAs.

Cons: Lack of filters before search, pricing on the calendar is not always correct.

Skyscanner is one of the most popular search engines worldwide. It was one of the first to adopt low-cost carriers in its search results and it continues to provide a very clean and straightforward search for travelers with flexible travel plans.

For flexible search results, click on the “whole month” tab when choosing dates. This will allow you to choose any specific month or just choose the cheapest month. A calendar will then appear allowing you to see the best prices for both the outbound and inbound flight at the same time. These results may not be entirely accurate since the price for the return date may depend on the departure date, but it’s a great way to get an idea of when cheap flights may be offered. You can also choose to see the results in a bar graph format if you wish.

Skyscanner flexible date calendar

Once you’ve chosen dates, it will bring you to the list of flights where you can filter your search further to weed out any airlines, trip durations, or the number of stops as you wish. One nice filter on Skyscanner is the ability to choose “only show airlines with flexible tickets”. With the recent uncertainty surrounding travel plans and restrictions, having flexible tickets can give you some much-needed peace of mind when booking a future flight.

Like Google and Kayak, Skyscanner also allows you to be flexible in where you want to travel. You can search for flights from your city to specific countries or to everywhere in the world. Just like with set destination searches, you can choose specific travel dates, certain months, or just choose the “cheapest month”. It will then give you results in list form, giving you the cheapest prices by country. After clicking on the country, it will drop down a list of prices to individual cities.

Skyscanner search everywhere cheap flights list

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to filter out airlines or certain schedules before doing a flex search. The only filter possible before you conduct your search is to choose nonstop flights only. This means you can’t weed out any low-cost airlines until you are on the specific dates landing page.

Skyscanner is great for its simplicity and it includes different OTAs that sometimes have lower fares than what you’ll find on Kayak. The lack of filters available before you conduct a search, however, means it’s often easier to find exactly what you’re looking for with a flex search on Google or Kayak first, and then checking Skyscanner to see if there is better pricing.

How to Use Momondo to Find Cheap Flights

momondo cheap flight search

Pros: Searches the most OTAs, often has lowest prices.

Cons: Slow to show all results, lacks a true flex search, requires researching policies on smaller OTAs.

To be honest, Momondo is not the best at flexible date searches, but I decided to include it in this list simply because it is the best meta search out there for finding the absolute lowest prices available. This is because Momondo sources the most OTAs—some of which you may need to research more on your own to know any caveats when booking. It’s safe to book with any of these OTAs, but there may be different change/cancelation policies and additional fees. Also, there may be a delay in ticketing on some of the smaller OTAs and prices are not guaranteed until your flight actually gets ticketed.

Momondo, managed by Kayak, has a similar flex search function in which you can opt to search for and compare cheap flights by selecting "weekend" or "month". Additionally, you can enter specific dates and select the option to show flights for anywhere within a range of up to three days from those selected dates. Once you conduct a date search, flexible or exact, you’ll get a bar graph showing pricing over a three-week period around your chosen travel dates. This graph is not completely accurate most of the time, but it can be a good indicator to check other dates if you see a big swing surrounding your dates.

My best suggestion is to first use another search engine, such as Google or Kayak, to find dates with the best price. Then, double check those exact dates on Momondo to see if you can find a lower price. Sometimes, the exact same flights are hundreds less on Momondo than other sites—especially on Star Alliance carriers. Other times the price difference may be minimal and you’ll have to decide if it’s worth it for the potential drawbacks. Just make sure you read the fine print about any extra change, cancelation, or foreign transaction fees on the actual booking site before you purchase.

Airline Sites with the Best Flexible Date Search Tools

In addition to meta search engines and OTAs, there are plenty of airlines that have great flexible search tools on their own websites. Although you won’t be able to compare other airlines with these searches, you can sometimes find lower fares on an airline’s site than anywhere else. And in some cases—like Southwest—it’s the only place you’ll find those airlines’ fares. These flexible date searches can sometimes be hidden or hard to find, so I’ll give links and/or explain how to find the most popular airline-specific flexible date search tools below.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Southwest

You won’t be able to book Southwest fares anywhere else so it’s always a good idea to check its low fare calendar in addition to other search engines. There is a link right below the arrival box on the home page or just go here .

Southwest low fare calendar

How to Find Cheap Flights on JetBlue

JetBlue has a somewhat hidden flex search tool. You can find a link by clicking on the “Book” header and then choosing “ Best Fare Finder ” or just go here . It will first display just the current month, but if you scroll you can see other month options. It’s somewhat annoying that you can’t just jump to a specific month, but you can eventually see JetBlue’s entire booking calendar on one page.

JetBlue best fare finder

How to Find Cheap Flights on Delta

Delta’s flex search is also hidden from its homepage. Use this link to start a search in calendar view by clicking on the “my dates are flexible” check box. Delta’s flex search has a unique feature that allows you to filter out Basic Economy fares if you wish.

How to Find Cheap Flights on United

From United’s home page, click on the “Calendar Shop” checkbox before searching. Then, just choose a month and desired trip length and you’ll be brought to a flexible date calendar. Another option is to start your search from the advanced search page and click on the “My dates are flexible” checkbox.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Alaska Airlines

On Alaska’s homepage, click on the “ all search options ” box just below the “adults” dropdown field. From there, you can click on a “Flexible dates” checkbox to start a search with a calendar view. You can also switch to a calendar view after doing an exact date search by choosing the “calendar” radio button in the “view by” section on the left-hand side of the page when choosing flights.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Hawaiian Airlines

At the bottom of the search box on Hawaiianairlines.com , you’ll see a link for a “Price Calendar”. Click this link to see fares in a calendar view. You can also toggle to a bar graph chart if you prefer.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Spirit

To find a monthly calendar on Spirit.com , you’ll first have to conduct an exact date search. This will default to a one-week flex search. You can toggle to a month view search by clicking “month” at the top of weekly view of fares. Toggle between the months using the arrows on either side of the calendar.

Spirit Airlines flexible date calendar

How to Find Cheap Flights on Frontier

Frontier also requires you to first search for exact dates and then shows you comparative prices for surrounding dates on a slider at the top of the following page. Unfortunately, you can’t exclude Discount Den fares from the calendar view, but you’ll notice that the standard fares are usually only slightly higher than the Discount Den fares you see on the calendar view.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Allegiant

Like the other ultra-low-cost carriers, Allegiant requires you to search for exact dates first. On the following page, you’ll see a “calendar view” button on the top right of both the departing and returning flight sections. Click these buttons to see fares on a flexible date calendar. Booking a roundtrip flight on Allegiant often gives you a small discount.

Allegiant flexible date calendar

I’ve only listed the major U.S. airline sites that allow you to see fares on a monthly calendar, but there are many international carriers that have this feature on their websites as well. Since there are many airlines around the world that only sell tickets on the company’s website, it’s always a good idea to do a Wikipedia search for the airport you are flying from to find out if there are any specific airlines you should check separately.

At Airfarewatchdog, we strive to check all avenues for cheap flights and the best way to find out when prices drop is to sign up for airfare alerts . Once you are alerted to a price you like, use these methods to search for cheap airfare with flexible travel dates and you’ll be enjoying your next vacation in no time.

Many of you—seniors, self-employed, and such—can be relatively flexible about where and when you travel. And when you think of travel, you probably look for really good deals. Fortunately, you can find several sources that will help you decide where and when to travel. A reader recently put the question to me:

“I read your article and I have a question. Do you know of any airfare website that looks for cheap fares for travelers who can travel virtually anytime but just want the lowest fare?”{{{SmarterBuddy|align=left}}}

That question involves two parts: When to fly and when to buy. If, at any given time, you know where you want to go and want to check out dates when you can fly there at the lowest fares, the websites of most big online travel agencies, aggregators, and individual airlines provide “flexible date” search systems:

  • Typically, you enter an origin city, a destination, and a date, and the site returns a grid of dates and fares for a month before and a month after the original date.
  • Cheap Tickets, Expedia, Hotwire, and Orbitz also give the option of entering a starting date and a trip duration (in days); the site returns a grid of options for up to 30 days in advance. Travelocity’s comparable system can cover up to three months in advance, but the display requires a lot of iteration and is more cumbersome.
  • Other sites, including Kayak, provide only plus-or-minus three day searches, and I couldn’t find any flexible search capabilities on Mobissimo or Vayama.

As another approach, you can sign up on several online sites—airline and agency—for bulletins on when fares drop to any given destination. Alternatively, you can place as many very low bids as you want on Priceline, varying the dates, to take “pot luck” on an airline and schedule.

Finding the best time to get the lowest fares is an entirely different matter. By now you should have heard that nobody can claim to forecast the ups and downs of airfares, except in a very general way related to the cost of oil. What we do know is that airlines periodically offer fare “sales,” and many of them are available for just one day.

Whether you know where you want to go or are just interested in good deals, your best bet is probably to subscribe to one or more sale-alert services, such as are available on SmarterTravel, that send out airfare bulletins announcing sales and other time-sensitive fare information. Many individual airlines and the big online travel agencies provide similar services. Some are general; others require that you specify a route or a destination. Be prepared to act when you see something good before it disappears.

Also, you can periodically check up on the “last-minute” postings that most big online agencies and search systems post. But you have to keep looking every few days, and there’s no point to looking until you’re about ready to travel.

If you need help deciding where you might like to go, several sites provide assistance, including Best Trip Choices, TravelMuse, and Wanderfly.

And don’t forget travel agents. A good travel agent necessarily keeps up with fast-changing airfares, as well as tours and other travel approaches. Also, most agents have a pretty good working knowledge of the world’s most popular destinations—as well as a few offbeat options—in case you need a few suggestions.

Many years ago, when airfares were far simpler and the best deals didn’t always require advance purchase, an elderly priest I knew would occasionally go to the local airport’s international terminal and ask, “When is the next departing flight?” The agent would invariably answer by asking, “Departing for which city?” And the priest would respond, “I don’t care where it’s going; I just want the next flight.” These days, you can’t be that footloose without overspending on airfares. But if you’re equally flexible, you can still find good deals.

Flexible Dates And Destination Flight Search

At Kiwi.com, we know our customers love to travel on their terms. We recognize there’s a hunger out there for people to be able to explore the world at their own pace, and that’s why we have introduced our flexible flight ticket, Flexi Ticket.

Why lock yourself into concrete plans when you can book a ticket that allows you to change the dates and only pay the difference in the flight price? Well, we’re about to open your mind up to a whole new way of traveling.

Keep reading to find out about flexible international flight tickets and how they can transform the way you discover new destinations in the future.

  • What Is Flexible Travel?

Flexible travel is becoming more and more popular as time goes on. It’s a style of travel that permits someone to adapt their plans according to changing circumstances, whether changing flight dates or flying with a different airline to arrive in a city faster.

Kiwi’s Flexible Flight Search – How It Works And Why It Makes Us The Best Flights Search Engine For Flexible Dates

Kiwi.com’s goal is to make travel as simple and affordable for everyone through flexible flight destination/location search and ticket types.

Have you ever been in a situation where you want to go on vacation but don’t know where or when? Well, that’s where our flexible flight destination and location search comes in handy. Instead of you choosing a fixed departure date and location, let us find you the best deal.

If our flexible date flight search option isn’t enough for you, make your trip even more amendable with one of our three ticket types, Saver, Standard, and Flexi. All offer different kinds of features if you need to change or cancel your trip, which we will get into further through the article.

How To Search For Flights With Flexible Travel Dates And Locations on Kiwi.com

Get your hands on some unbeatable flexible travel deals with just a few clicks. See how you can do this below.

  • Step 1 – Log on to our homepage .
  • Step 2 – Type in the airport you want to fly from.
  • Step 3 – Instead of choosing a city you want to fly to, choose the ‘anywhere’ option.
  • Step 4 – For the departure date section, click ‘anytime.’
  • Step 5 – Wait for the page to load with all your travel options.

A low-fare tip: you don’t have to leave yourself wide open with the ‘anytime’ option for travel dates. You can also choose +1, +3, and +5 days to give yourself some level of flexibility. For example, say you had the whole month of June off for your summer holidays but only want to go away for two weeks; this would benefit you.

  • What You Need To Know About Flexible Tickets

Flexible tickets authorize passengers to change the terms of the ticket after they have purchased it. Once someone has purchased one of these airfares, they can cancel it whenever they want with 80% of the refund returned or change the departure to a later date, depending on which one they’ve bought. While these tickets have huge benefits, it’s important to know that they come with a strict set of rules you should know before booking.

  • The Types Of Flexible Flight Tickets

Kiwi provides three different flexible tickets that come with their own set of rules. Before booking a flight with us, you’ll be asked which one you want to purchase. Let’s break down each ticket.

Saver Tickets

Saver tickets are the most affordable of the three. They’re usually booked by anyone who has concrete plans and doesn’t plan on making any changes.

Saver Ticket Rules

  • If you need to make any changes to your trip, you must pay the full price for a new fare.
  • If you have to cancel your flight altogether, you will receive a €10 credit that can be used with Kiwi.com. This is only for bookings over €20.
  • Any changes or cancellations you want can be made up to 48 hours before the departure time.
  • Anyone who has booked the flight within a week of the departure date can make changes up to 4 hours before take off.

Standard Tickets

Standard tickets give travelers some flexibility, but not as much as the flexi ticket. They’re for those who think they might have to change their flight date but have no plans to cancel it totally.

Standard Ticket Rules

  • If you need to change your flight dates, you’ll only have to pay whatever the difference is in price. Say the price is lower or the same; you won’t have to pay anything, it’s absolutely free.
  • If you have to cancel your trip, unfortunately, you won’t get a refund; you’ll only receive the €10 credit, like the saver ticket.
  • Any fare changes must be made at the latest 48 hours before departure, unless you booked your ticket within a week of the departure date. In that case, you can apply changes 4 hours before take off.

Changes to a standard ticket can only be made once. If you have to make another change, you must follow the same rules for saver tickets.

Flexi Tickets

Flexi Tickets guarantee travelers the freedom to book airfares without worrying about not getting their money back if they change their mind last minute. Backpackers, in particular, love our Flexi Ticket option.

Flexi Ticket Rules

  • If you want to change the dates of your departure, you can do so freely. All you have to do is pay the difference between flight tickets, or if it’s less, you don’t have to pay anything.
  • If you need to take advantage of the free flight cancellation option for your booking, you can do so up to 48 hours before departure, and you’ll receive 80% of the fee you paid to the carrier, including bags and seats. You’ll have a choice of how you want to be paid, either through money or Kiwi Credit.
  • Like the other options, if you booked the fare within a week of departure, you can amend it up to 4 hours before.

Please note that when a customer cancels a Standard or Flexi Ticket with us, we usually refund them even if the carrier has a different refund policy. If, in the future, they decide to reimburse you with the money, we will keep that as a service fee for refunding you already.

Kiwi.com’s types of flexible flight tickets

Standard Ticket VS. Flexible Tickets – Which One Should You Choose

Standard and Flexible Tickets both come with their perks, but they’re also for two different kinds of travelers. Standard tickets are for someone who will travel to the destination, regardless of whether their plans change; it just might be later. In comparison, flexible tickets fall into the category of people who may or may not actually go on the trip but want to have something booked just in case.

Before choosing the right ticket for you, ask yourself the following questions.

  • Is there a chance your dates of travel will change?
  • Could there be a possibility that you don’t go at all?
  • What Is The Difference Between Flexi And Saver Flights?

Flexi and saver Tickets are completely different from each other.

Flexi Tickets come with a variety of advantages, such as an 80% refund and simple flight changes, with you only having to pay the difference. Whereas with a saver ticket, you don’t get any of these perks. If you run into any trouble and need to adapt your itinerary, you’ll be forced to pay for the change, or if you cancel, you won’t get a refund.

Adioso: A Flight Search Engine for Travelers with Flexible Plans

With most travel search engines, you enter your departure and destination cities and travel dates, then fish through the results for the lowest price.

Vagabondish is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small affiliate commission. Read our disclosure .

Adioso takes a different, open-ended approach by allowing you to enter only your departure city and … everything else is optional. Valid search terms include:

  • Providence to Anywhere Under $900
  • New York to London in December
  • Bali to LAX

… you get the gist. The results are plotted on a timeline for a quick visualization of when the best (read: cheapest) time to fly is.

Adioso: Flexible Travel Search Engine

A glance at the above screenshot indicates that we can save a few hundred dollars by simply flying on the dates depicted at the very bottom of the chart. It’s a novel concept, particularly with travelers who are looking to “get away” but aren’t necessarily sure when … or even where.

Like many new web apps, there are bugs. But this definitely looks like the start of something promising.

What to know for booking summer travel: Expert tips on airfare, destinations and more

Where to score flight deals during the prime summer travel season.

As the surge of summer travel draws near, the race to book a great vacation is on.

"If you're looking to travel domestically within the U.S., I think you should be booking now for summer travel," Clint Henderson, travel expert and managing editor of The Points Guy, told "GMA."

Earlier this month while reporting quarterly earnings, Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian projected "record advance bookings for the summer," telling CNBC that the carrier's credit card data and bookings show customers are highly interested in air travel.

An increase in budget airline routes that has created more competition, paired with an easing of the post-pandemic revenge travel surge, means travelers could see more deals.

"Overall prices are down from where they were when we just had that boom out of the pandemic," Henderson said. "So things are more reasonable."

Hopper, the flight booking app, has shown predicted fares for flights to Europe will be down 10% in price from the same time last year.

Google recently announced its top 20 trending summer destinations , which saw a few newcomers on the list and Paris rose to the No. 2 spot.

With the Olympics taking place there from July 26 through Aug. 11, an uptick in airfare and hotel pricing is expected during the Games.

But those willing to wait out the Olympics could find big savings for flights to the host nation.

The Points Guy has featured deals from Atlanta, Dallas and Charlotte to Paris for as low as $515 from August through the fall.

Amsterdam, Prague, Spain and Iceland are among the most reasonably priced European destinations, as seen on Hopper.

Tips for booking summer travel

Don't forget to stay flexible with travel dates and keep midweek in mind for possibly lower fares.

There's also a time during the post-summer rush known as "shoulder season," between September and October, when fares could drop by as much as 30%.

When it comes to airfare purchase timing, the experts at The Points Guy have found prices dip eight to four weeks before the outbound flight, but after the one-month mark, prices will creep back up.

10 ways to experience Oregon on a budget

Apr 23, 2024 • 5 min read

Experience Oregon on a budget with these money-saving tips © AscentXmedia / Getty Images

Oregon is like dozens of vacation destinations rolled into one.

In addition to the natural beauty of its many landscapes, the Beaver State is home to vineyards, dazzling cities and exciting cultural events like the Oregon Shakespeare Festival . The only catch? With so many options, you can easily spend a fortune on your itinerary.

Luckily, this doesn’t have to be the case. With a little planning, you can visit Oregon on a budget. These travel hacks will help you see bucket list Oregon locations – like the Pacific Ocean, Crater Lake National Park  and cities like Portland – without breaking the bank.

Daily costs in Oregon

  • Dorm lodging in a hostel: $28
  • Basic hotel room for two: $100
  • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb:) $110
  • Camping fees: $17 for a tent site
  • Public transportation: $5.60 for a day pass in Portland
  • Coffee $3–6 a cup
  • Sandwich: $10
  • Dinner for two: $50
  • Wine tasting: $15

A cyclist rides along a path in a city's riverside park

Skip the rental car

Save yourself the money and hassle of renting a car on your next trip to Portland. Many of the city’s top attractions are walkable from downtown, plus you’ll find bike shares and scooter rentals on virtually every corner. If you need to venture further, a day pass for Portland’s TriMet transportation system (including light rail, commuter rail and bus service throughout the metro area) is just $5.60.

Oregon’s inter-city bus line, Point , offers affordable transportation for longer distances. The scenic Northwest route from Portland to Astoria is a popular way to get to the coast since tickets are only $18 each way. Once you arrive, downtown Astoria is walkable. During warmer months, you can take a ride on the historic riverfront trolley for just $2 a day.

Local tip: If you’re arriving by air, catch the light rail at the south end of the PDX terminal building.

Visit the beach during the shoulder season

The Oregon coast is most popular from Memorial Day through the end of September. This means lodging comes at a premium. You’ll save money if you plan your visit outside of that time frame. The weather can be quite lovely in spring and fall and the beaches are far less crowded. Even stormy winter days are beautiful on the coast when waves crash on the surf.

Purchase your lift tickets in advance

If you’re planning a ski trip to a destination like Timberline or Mt Bachelor , you’ll save money by purchasing your lift ticket online. If your plans are flexible, search for a few different dates to find the best deal. Most of the time you’ll get a better price the farther you book in advance. Since ski season in Oregon usually lasts through April or May, there are plenty of dates to choose from.

An alpine area covered with snow and a vast lake

Explore Southern Oregon

In addition to attractions like Crater Lake National Park , Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve  and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Southern Oregon is home to fantastic vineyards and wineries. Besides being an amazing vacation destination, lodging, restaurants, and activities like wine tasting usually cost less than they do in hot spots like Portland or Willamette Valley. Base yourself in Grants Pass, Ashland or Klamath Falls to save money without sacrificing memorable experiences.

Book hotel rooms or rental houses during the week

Most hotels and rental homes are cheaper on weekdays than they are on weekends. If you aren’t tied to a specific date, try playing with booking platforms to see how much your stay will cost on different days of the week. You can put the money you save towards meals or transportation.

Take advantage of free or discounted museum days

Many of Oregon’s best museums offer free or discounted admission to the public regularly. Examples include free admission to the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute in Pendleton on the first Friday of every month, free admission to the Portland Art Museum on the first Thursday of every month, or $5 admission to the Omni Museum of Science and Industry on the first Sunday of every month. Free admission and discount programs are usually listed on museum websites.

Stay in a hostel

Forge friendships with fellow travelers and save big bucks on lodging with accommodations at properties like Portland Hostel , where dorm-style beds cost as little as $36 a night. If you’re traveling to the Oregon coast, a shared room at the Seaside Lodge and International Hostel can be yours for about $50 a night. In Southern Oregon, shared rooms at Ashland Commons Hostel are as little as $28 a night.

Time your visit to Oregon just right with this seasonal guide

Two women prepare a meal at a picnic table beside an RV camper parked in a scenic tree-lined campsite

Oregon’s state parks are not only beautiful, they are excellent places to stay . Although prices at individual parks vary, you can generally expect to pay about $17 a night for a tent site, between $30–40 for a non-resident RV site, and about $50 a night for a yurt or rustic cabin. For exact rates, search for your dates and desired location online.

Snag a wine-tasting passport

Tasting fees at Oregon’s wineries typically run from $15–25 a person, although they can easily cost more, depending on the winery. If you’re visiting several wineries, it can put a serious dent in your budget. The Heart of Willamette Passport offers free or discounted tastings at wineries in the Corvallis area for a one-time fee of $45. If you’re traveling with a plus one, a second passport can be purchased at a $5 discount.

Seek out happy hours

Happy hour is hardly a new concept but the discounts are especially rewarding in a food-centric city like Portland. Find $5 cocktails and two tacos for $5 at Pig Patas Tacos or $10 chicken sandwiches with half-off bottles of wine at Radio Room . There are plenty of great happy hours in other parts of the state, too, including $6 for poutine and wings plus discounted drinks at Taproot Lounge and Cafe in Salem.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

flexible travel destinations search

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

flexible travel destinations search

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

flexible travel destinations search

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

flexible travel destinations search

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

India travel trends: Search for spiritual destinations surges 97%, Delhi scores high in inquiries

S piritual destinations are stealing the show in India's travel market with such locations recording a 97 percent surge in searches in the last two years, according to an analysis by online travel aggregator (OTA) MakeMyTrip.

Searches for Ayodhya grew 585 percent, Ujjain by 359 percent and Badrinath by 343 percent in 2023 over the previous year, said the report launched by the OTA on April 22.  Tier-2 and tier-3 cities are embracing spiritual journeys, it added.

The report also added that people taking more than three trips per year has grown by 25 percent in 2023 as compared to 2019.

Where India travels

On the international front, 30 percent of all foreign travel searches from India are for Dubai, Bangkok and Singapore, while London, Toronto and New York are the most searched long-haul destinations.

Searches for emerging international destinations grew by multi-fold in 2023 and the hot favourites include Hong Kong, Almaty, Paro, Baku, Da Nang and Tbilisi. Travel to unexplored destinations has increased which has led to over 30 percent growth in searches for 16 emerging destinations. As many as 31 unique destinations contribute to 60 percent of searches from all six metros including Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Delhi NCR and Goa are the most searched destination from all six metros. Delhi has the highest share in terms of searches in 2023 at 11.4 percent, followed by Mumbai at 7.2 percent, Bengaluru at 5.4 percent, and Goa at 5.3 percent.

In the domestic flights category, tier II cities have emerged as the highest growth destinations. Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram Indore and Bhubaneshwar lead with maximum searches.

Travel sentiment touched an all-time high in November 2022 with seven out of 10 people planning travel, the OTA said. It added that there has been 45 percent growth in searches as compared to the pre-pandemic period. As many as 100 million people are actively searching for travel on MakeMyTrip platform annually.

How India travels

Family travel bookings surged by 64 percent in 2023 as compared to 2022, followed by solo travel booking a 23 percent growth.

Two people travelling together make for 50 percent of all bookings.

Indians continue to make last minute travel plans with a significant portion of travel bookings in India are made spontaneously, with 46 percent of domestic flights booked less than a week before the travel date. On the other hand, about half of all international bookings are made at least two weeks in advance. Only one-third of international bookings are made more than a month before the travel date, suggesting a flexible approach to international travel planning among Indian travellers.

For flight bookings, women prefer to pre-book window seats and men pick aisle seats. Tomato cucumber cheese lettuce sandwich is the most ordered in-flight meal on domestic flights. Vegetarian Hindu meal is the most ordered in-flight meal on international flights.

Delhi travellers are over-indexed on booking domestic flights less than a week ahead of travel date while travellers from Kolkata have a higher inclination to book flights over three months in advance for both international and domestic destinations.

Where India stays

Alternative accommodations including homestays and villas recorded 24 percent growth in bookings in 2023 on MakeMyTrip as Indians are searching for stays that provide an emotional connection with culture and nature, the platform said.

Hostels and apartments recorded maximum search growth of 39 percent and 31 percent respectively in 2023.

For hostels and apartments, the preference is for those properties which cost less than Rs 2,500 per night but for villas, it is higher. Close to 20 percent of family travellers searched for properties with tariffs over Rs 10,000 per night last year.

More than 50 percent of the family travellers and 75 percent of the solo travellers booked a property for stay below Rs 4,500 .

Weekend getaways emerged as the highest growth destinations in the domestic hotels category. Jim Corbett leads with 131 percent growth in searches on MakeMyTrip followed by Ooty and Munnar. A large number of these hotel customers are driving to these destinations from nearby metros.

People from Maharashtra contribute to highest domestic hotel searches. Travellers from Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka searched more for villas while maximum searches were done for hostels in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa.

When Chris Ingham Brooke, a digital publishing entrepreneur, first came to Nosara, Costa Rica in 2016 it was just a sleepy little surf town, with one main drag and jungle stretching to the sand.

A New High-Speed Train Between Las Vegas and California Breaks Ground This Week

How climate change could disrupt the future of travel, according to a new study.

“It had become really vibrant and interesting,” he said. Still, there weren’t many options when it came to luxury family-friendly accommodations.

The Nosara coast

He bought a commercial lot and three years later, in March, opened Silvestre—a boutique resort with nine, 1,000-square-foot residences, a rooftop bar, a yoga studio, and a surf “concierge.” Located steps from the beach path to Playa Guiones, Silvestre sits on one of the most consistent surf breaks in the world.

International visitors to Costa Rica jumped 17 percent last year from 2022, and the number of visitors this January was up 59 percent from January 2023 with new direct flights being added from Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis, and Houston, according to the Costa Rican Tourism Board.

A room at Silvestre

While Costa Rica’s draw is not its amenities or nightlife (although they are improving), the year-round warm weather makes it a polestar for outdoors addicts, with perfect conditions for surfing, snorkeling, hiking, and mountain biking. The jet set here are more likely to gather to watch sunsets than disco. It’s much-touted Blue Zone wellness culture and unspoiled beaches and forests are bait for chakras that are better aligned.

What’s coming to Guanacaste

A rendering of the Waldorf Astoria coming to Costa Rica

An incredible 18 properties are slated to open by 2025, including two new luxury properties that will hit the market at the end of this year: Nekajui, a Ritz Carlton Reserve Hotel and Residences and Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique. A Six Senses Resort and Spa Papagayo is expected to open in late 2025.

The Waldorf Astoria, located 30 minutes from the Liberia Airport, will have 188 guest rooms and suites and 41 residences built into the hillside with its own sandy beach, signature restaurants, cenote-themed spa, teen center, and kids club, including eco-tourism experiences in the surrounding área.

“We won’t just take care of the kids at the club, we will help them experience different things about the country,” said Valeria Nowotny, vice president of operations for Hilton’s resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. “Visitors here are looking for a nature experience, mixed with a little local culture.”

For luxury travelers that have struggled to find a resort in the right location with the right amenities and polish, these properties will provide new reasons to return to Guanacaste, with expanding infrastructure and more paved roads making it easier to get from place to place.

And, despite the construction boom in the Papagayo Peninsula, the área is unlikely to be overbuilt anytime soon, thanks to the vast Área de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) , a UNESCO World Heritage site protecting wildlife on 400,000 acres from the shore of the Pacific surrounding these hotels to the lowland rainforests in the Caribbean basin. And while many locals complain that the nearby city of Tamarindo is becoming more like Cancun, there are limits to access on water rights to restrict development here and across Costa Rica, said Wagner Loria, an agent with Keller Williams Tamarindo.

Further south, in Nosara there are also protections that keep developers from building directly on the beach, leaving views pristine.

“There’s a very powerful community here that’s very protective of the town,” said Brooke. “When you look back from the beach, all you can see is jungle. That makes it a very special place.”

This $35 Lounge Set Is the Perfect Spring Travel Outfit for Cold Planes and Warm Destinations

It’s even softer than my $300 version.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

I have my airport uniform down to a science. And while I’ve historically rotated through the same four lounge sets that admittedly cost me a pretty penny, I was in desperate need of a sweatsuit alternative with shorts. Because I’m always freezing under the blast of plane air conditioning, I needed something that would keep me cozy on flights without causing me to overheat when I finally landed in a warm destination.

Instead of springing for another $300 set, I decided on this $35 version at Walmart for my flight to Miami last weekend. The second I put it on my body, I was blown away by the quality and overall comfort. The matching sweatsuit, which comes in seven different color options, is lined with one of the softest polyester fabrics I’ve ever touched. While I was worried it would feel a little too heavy for Florida, upon trying the style, I was pleasantly surprised that it was more lightweight than it looked.

Naughtyhood Two-Piece Short Set

The set includes a perfectly oversized crewneck sweatshirt with matching drawstring shorts that I wore with my go-to sneakers and a tank top underneath for when I arrived in Miami. The fabric feels breathable and easy to move in, while the mid-thigh length shorts offer a flattering fit.

The elastic waistband on the shorts keeps them in place and hugs my waist without feeling overly constricting, which is especially important to me when flying. Plus, the deep pockets are convenient for stashing small items like lip balm and my hotel key card while I’m on the go. I tossed on the sweatshirt for my three-hour flight to Miami, and upon arrival, I casually draped it around my shoulders.

Shoppers similarly raved over the set that feels much more expensive than it is. One customer said it’s so versatile, they wear both pieces separately, while another added that it’s so soft to the touch and lightweight yet cozy enough to wear year-round.

While the prices vary slightly (my blue-gray version is $35) you can score even better prices on black and green styles for as little as $21. Head over to Walmart to add the cozy set to your online cart or keep scrolling for more styles that are perfect for cold planes to warm destinations.
