46 athletes are competing on skis and snowboards on the Freeride World Tour in Europe and Canada for the title as the world's best freerider.
With Kristoffer Turdell (men's ski), Victor De Le Rue (men's snowboard), Elisabeth Gerritzen (women's ski) and serial winner Marion Haerty (France), all the defending champions are also back on the grid.
Race calendar: 5 events in Europe and Canada
The 2022 season will take place from late January to early April 2022. After the past season could only be held in Europe, the Freeride World Tour 2022 returns to Canada. The season will close in Verbier, Switzerland. All competitions will be broadcast on www.freerideworldtour.com .
The events at a glance:
The new format: Cut after third event, then two final events
New in the 2022 season is the format of the two final events: After the third stop in Canada, there will be a cut: only the best 26 riders (12 male skiers, 5 female skiers, 5 male snowboarders, 4 female snowboarders) will qualify for the last two season events, the FWT Finals. The two best results of each participant will be taken into account.
In Fiederbrunn, Austria, all remaining participants will have two runs, of which only the best will be included in the ranking.
In addition, there are more points to be gained in the last two events: The first-place finishers will receive 12,500 points instead of 10,000.

The skiing Freeride World Tour champions are presented below in the charts.
Here the Swede Kristoffer Turdell is the defending champion. But with Isaac Freeland (USA, champion 2020) and Leo Slemett (France, champion 2017), two other former overall winners are also in the mix.
Women's ski:
Here, too, the reigning winner of snowboarding Freeride World Tour, Elisabeth Gerritzen from Switzerland, is back. She ended the domination of Italy's Arianna Tricomi in 2021 after three titles in a row. Tricomi will also be back again in 2022.
Men's snowboard
Defending champion Victor De Le Rue of France could win the Freeride World Tour title for the third time in 2022, following in the footsteps of his big brother Xavier, who won the competition three times from 2008 to 2010.
Women snowboard:
Marion Haerty is the snowboard queen of the Freeride World Tour. Most recently, she won the title three times in a row, becoming snowboard champion four times in total. Only Austria's Manuela Mandl was able to break the streak in 2018. Mandl will also be back in 2022.
Partners of the Freeride World Tour
With YETI, Crazy and Guru, the Freeride World Tour has gained three new partners for the 2022 season. “Freeride World Tour is proud to welcome Guru, Yeti and Crazy in the family of FWT partners. Together, we will strive to optimize our riders and audience’s experience"said Nicolas Hale-Woods, Freeride World Tour CEO. 2024 IFWA Freeride World Championship Tour
Ifwa rules and judging.
The IFWA tour is back with a fresh restructure to fortify the foundation of the association. Made possible with the collaboration of willing and able people, who are all dedicated to the sport, and the amazing competitive riders. All of which put on one of the worlds most incredible shows in the surf. That being said, the IFWA board has moved forward with many improvements, and incentives for this year’s IFWA Freeride World Championship Tour format & structure.
A new points structure has been developed for this year’s IFWA world tour that will eliminate numerous ties and make for a better chase to the championship. This year, all riders will compete in the pre-qualifying rounds on Friday at tour stop. These pre-qualifying results will not only seed riders into the IFWA brackets, but will also help determine final rankings for those not advancing to the ¼ finals round. The overall top 4 IFWA tour riders will compete in the pre qualifying round, but will still be automatically placed in the priority of the brackets. Riders winning the ¼ finals round will advance to the championship round to determine 1st-4th place. Losers from the ¼ finals will move to the consolation rounds to determine 5th-8th . All eliminated riders will be ranked by their prequalifying placement in the round in which they were eliminated. At the conclusion of each tour stop, riders will be ranked 1-20 with overall tour points accrued for each position. See our example of the points breakdown & Bracket examples by clicking the Images below:

Freeride World Tour Merges with International Ski and Snowboard Federation
The news that freeride’s biggest competition circuit will now be part of fis is garnering mixed reactions..

Here’s one for the 2022 ski bingo card: Today, the Freeride World Tour (FWT) announced its merger with the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS). The acquisition is effective immediately, applying to the FWT’s upcoming 2022-’23 season.
Founded in 1924, FIS is a conglomerate responsible for governing various winter sports competitions, including Freestyle Skiing, Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Freestyle Snowboarding, Nordic Combined, and Ski Jumping. FIS sets the rules for these competitions and is officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), meaning athletes in FIS events can earn points toward Olympic qualification.
The FWT, meanwhile, officially started in 2004, but its history extends further, mingling with a difficult-to-pin-down concept known as freeskiing. Freeskiing, championed by skiers like Mike Douglas, was a response to the restrictions imposed on skiers by competition organizers, particularly in the mogul scene. Douglas and others aimed to retain what they saw as the heart of skiing—creativity and self-expression.
Freeride competitions like the FWT sought legitimacy for freeskiing without conforming to competition standards and erasing freeskiing’s origins. They hosted events on imposing faces and judged skiers on a loose set of criteria, like style and fluidity, as opposed to stricter guidelines.
“The biggest thing is… it’s opposed to everything that FIS does. It’s [freeride competitions] not an altered piece of space that we’re competing on,” says Berkeley Patterson, previous FWT competitor. “You can win freeriding in more of a variety of ways than the other sports,” he added, noting that the FWT’s current competition format offers riders considerable freedom in comparison to ski racing or freestyle.
However, according to the press release of the merger, FIS will not alter the pre-existing format of the FWT, with judging and the Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) system set to remain unchanged. FIS will instead focus on the “marketing and governance” of the FWT.
The potential upside of the acquisition is twofold. First, it legitimizes freeriding as a possible Olympic sport. Presumably, if the IOC picks up freeriding, the FWT could now become a qualifying event. Second, it increases the financial and marketing resources the FWT has access to, which could lead to future event growth and greater exposure for involved athletes. Although the exact changes the FIS plans to make to the FWT are not yet clear.
Related: Get ready for more double-backies and extreme skiing on this year’s FWT
In a follow-up letter sent to Downdays , FIS noted that the acquisition does not mean freeride is an official FIS discipline in the “formal and statutory sense.” For freeride to be fully absorbed by the FIS, a motion would need to pass in the organization’s internal Congress. According to this letter, the FWT will continue to operate “rather independently” for the time being.
“The merger with FWT will see FIS add one of the most exciting, dynamic winter sports to its portfolio,” said Johan Eliasch, FIS President. “This is truly a win-win for all parties as FIS can bring massive growth potential to the FWT providing the chance to develop on a broader stage. FWT brings a highly professional tour that offers breathtaking action and an entirely new element of skiing and snowboarding to FIS.”
Current FWT athletes Reine Barkered and Jess Hotter are optimistic about the acquisition.
“Being a part of FWT and seeing the sport develop over so many years makes this feel like a natural next step to take. It will be interesting to see where it leads us, and I think it will bring more recognition to the sport and all the benefits that will come with it,” says Barkered.
“I am really excited to hear the news and looking forward to seeing future opportunities for athletes competing in the world of Freeride,” reports Hotter.
Despite positivity from a handful of current FWT athletes and management, the merger has sparked disdain in certain corners of the skiing community. On Newschoolers, a freeskiing forum and media website, one commenter wrote, “Great, so now FIS can take the revenue and pump it into ski racing instead.” Another said, “RIP Freeride World Tour.”
The comments section on the FWT’s Instagram merger announcement looks similar. Alex Hall, freeskiing legend and former Olympic athlete, wrote, “is this a joke?” Paddy Graham, also a professional skier, matched his sentiment, writing, “this is the worst.”
In a less negative take, one Instagram user commented, “mixed feelings… on the one hand, a great opportunity to grow the sport further and provide more visibility and support to the athletes. On the other hand, a risk of losing the unique spirit and culture of freeriding. Curious how it will play out.”
To Patterson, the ex-FWT competitor, the possibility of stricter judging or regulation presents a real threat to the FWT, “looking for perfection in these things, in like runs… in my opinion, only makes the sport more boring,” he says.
The concern expressed on Instagram and elsewhere illustrates a common opinion amongst skiers—that the FIS is too corporate and rules-oriented to have a place in freeride skiing and freeskiing. Without a crystal ball, though, no one can precisely say what the acquisition will mean for the FWT and its athlete roster. Stay tuned for further updates.

A Weird Winter Just Upended the World’s Biggest Freeride Competition
After two events were canceled for poor weather, will Canada’s Kicking Horse be the next stop on the chopping block?
Heading out the door? Read this article on the Outside app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .
You may have seen headlines about crazy winter weather across Europe. Snow storms pummeled the Alps in the late fall, making for one of the snowiest Novembers on record. A few hundred miles away in the Pyrenees, rain fell on barren mountainsides amid soaring temperatures. Then, a mid-January warmup saw France nearly break its high temperature average for the month. Across the continent, the conditions have wreaked havoc on winter sports.
Perhaps no sport has faced more turmoil than extreme skiing and snowboarding. The Freeride World Tour (FWT), the preeminent series for the sport, was recently forced to completely upend its annual competition schedule. The tour canceled its first two events in the Pyrenees—one in Spain’s Baqueira Beret, and the other at Andorra’s Ordino Arcalis resort. While the mountain range features the perfect terrain for freeride competition, there’s just not enough snow.
“It is a shame, but it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Pyrenees stops were canceled,” said Drew Tabke, a retired FWT skier. “Every year we went to Andorra we had tough conditions.”
While the Spanish Pyrenees has fared a little better and has open ski areas, the snowpack has failed to meet the demanding conditions that freeride competitions require: ample coverage combined with avalanche stability on the steepest, above-treeline terrain. So while the groomers are skiing well in Baqueira Beret, Spain, the Baciver face that is home to the FWT stop was not sufficient to ride.
Aymar Navarro, a veteran FWT skier and Pyrenees local, expressed dismay at the weather conditions in his home range. “It is true that the Pyrenees suffered a lot of heat these last two seasons and I think it is not normal,” he said. But Navarro maintains that these venues are special, and deserve to remain on the calendar. The Baciver face is situated right above the piste and crowds gather to watch the athletes drop into the face. “It is unique to be able to compete in front of so many people—it is like a soccer stadium,” says Navarro. “You can stand in the start gate and hear everything said in the crowd. It makes your hair stand on end.”
Organizers further shook up the schedule with a backup plan to keep athletes competing. They held an event on the famed Bec de Rosses face in Verbier, Switzerland, on January 26-27. During a typical season, the Verbier event is the series finale, and it features perhaps the steepest and most dangerous slope in competitive freeriding.
“The Bec is like the Eddie,” says Tabke, referring to the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational which takes place in Waimea Bay. “It’s an event everyone wants to compete in, but is only good every six years.” The Bec is no stranger to bad crashes—Navarro broke his shoulder in two places after a brutal crash on the face during the FWT finale in 2022.
Placing Verbier first placed some athletes at a disadvantage, Tabke said. Under Freeride World Tour rules, skiers and snowboarders get a single run down some of the most difficult mountain faces in the world to prove their abilities. Competitors can visually inspect the face, but none gets a chance to feel out the snow conditions until it is their turn to drop in. North American athletes rarely compete in events that allow visual inspection. Max Hitzig, a 21-year-old German skier and Zuzanna Witych, a 31-year-old skier from Poland, won the pro skiing events at Verbier. Meanwhile Núria Castan Baron (26) and Victor de Le Rue (34) stood atop the podium in the women’s and men’s snowboarding categories, respectively. Not a single North American rookie stood on a podium.
But not every athlete complained about the shakeup. Molly Armanino, 30, a Lake Tahoe skier who made her debut on the Tour in 2023 said she was happy to simply ski the imposing face. “Going straight to the Bec was scary, but it was awesome to actually be able to ski it,” she said. “Last year we waited around for a week before the event was canceled so coming back to Verbier first thing this year felt fitting.” Armanino landed on the podium in Verbier with a third-place finish.
The next stop is scheduled to be held in Kicking Horse, outside of Golden, British Columbia, between February 13-19. But snow conditions in Western Canada are also challenging. “It’s quite dire here,” said Dr. Michele Koppes, a professor and research chair in landscapes of climate change at the University of British Columbia.
“Right now we’re sitting at about 56 percent of our average snowpack,” she said. Koppes pointed to several major shifts that are changing the climate in B.C. Heat in the arctic circle has shifted the jet stream further south, pushing warm air into Canada. In January, British Columbia broke its 30-year record for high temperatures. Due to the unusual warmth, the high peaks are seeing rain instead of snow? “The freezing level in the Coast Range fell at 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) two days ago,” Koppes said. “That’s above the summit of Whistler Blackcomb.”
Climate models for the near future point to weird winters continuing. Rain-on-snow events and atmospheric rivers which saturate the snowpack are going to become increasingly likely, said Koppes. Unless the Freeride World Tour can pivot its structure, which is locked into one-week weather windows at each stop, the future of competitive freeriding looks unsure. “We’re living in highly variable times and we fear these out-of-norm conditions are becoming the new normal,” said Koppes.
The Kicking Horse event is still a few weeks away, and snow conditions can change quickly. “Rain and wet avalanche danger in January in Canada is a new one for me,” said Armanino. She’s says she’s not sure what the Tour would do, if the Kicking Horse competition was canceled—by then, they’d be down three out of six total stops (plus a seventh with the Verbier addition). But she has hope—“I’m still sort of optimistic that they’ll have the comp at kicking horse. With an unskied face, all you really need is a few inches of snow to make it sendable!”
