Aptly known as ‘the Land of high Passes’ Ladakh is one of the most unique and enchanting regions of India. This sparsely populated, vast landscape is a dream destination for adventure lovers worldwide. The Leh Ladakh Bike Trip is an unprecedented chance to experience the charm of the region. As the expedition is two-week long, we will have ample time to explore this vast cold desert at a slow and relaxing pace. We will start our Leh Ladakh Bike Tour Package from Delhi , and those coming from outside the city, are required to reach here 24 hours prior to the departure time.

We have an array of fixed departure dates for you to pick as an individual. If you are a group of 8 persons or more, we can also arrange for a customized bike tour package. This itinerary has been well-researched and carefully formulated after looking back at several of our trips in the past. We even arrange for pick-ups and transfer of your personal motorcycles from and to wherever they are, respectively. On this motorbike trip to Leh Ladakh, you can choose to ride solo or with a pillion rider. Remember that your road journey will be strenuous, but picturesque. The bumpy, narrow, and winding mountain roads with blind curves, deep gorges, and ravines at numerous points will keep pumping adrenaline through your veins. All this will make you tired, but once you gaze at the amazing views, you will be immediately refreshed. Know more about other popular Motor Bike Tours in India . Itinerary for Leh Ladakh Motor Bike Expedition:

Day 00: Arrival in Delhi(216m) Arrive in Delhi on your own and meet the Adventure Nation team and your fellow riders in the evening. In order to provide you the information regarding the expedition, it is essential that you participate in an orientation session. After the session, the bikes will be allotted so you may take it for a spin and check if it’s aligned to your riding style. Later, you are to go to your accommodation (arranged by yourself)  and retire early as tomorrow is going to be an early start. Day 01: Delhi to Chandigarh(321m) | 260km

Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 5 Hours Altitude Gain - 105m Highlights - Breakfast at Murthal

Arrive at the decided location early in the morning and meet our team and your fellow riders. After a quick briefing, we flag off from Delhi and start riding on the National Highway 1. Today’s journey will take you through places like Panipat, Karnal and Kurukshetra. Arrive in the city beautiful and check in to your accommodation. Stay overnight in a hotel. Day 02: Chandigarh to Manali(2050m) | 280km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 9 Hours Altitude Gain - 1729m Highlights - Entering the Himalayas, Riding along Beas River

After having an early breakfast, check out from the hotel and hit the road. Initially, we ride through the plains in the State of Punjab and after riding for a few hours, we enter the State of Himachal Pradesh, also known as the ‘Land of the Gods.’ We will pass through the towns of Bilaspur and Mandi. After crossing Bhuntar, the ride gets exciting as we ride along the Beas River until we reach Manali. Later in the evening, go out and explore the colorful lanes of Old Manali, if time permits. Stay overnight in a hotel. Day 03: Manali to Jispa(3200m) | 140km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Gain - 1150m Highlights - Solang Valley, Rohtang La(Pass)

Today, we are going to ride towards Jispa on the much-celebrated Manali-Leh Highway. Leaving early is pivotal as we need to cross the mighty Rohtang Pass (3978m) early in the day, before it gets too crowded. After crossing Rohtang, the landscape changes drastically as we enter the Lahaul and Spiti District. The lush green grasslands disappear and the barren slopes of the cold dessert take over. We continue the ride towards Jispa crossing the quaint mountain towns of Sissu and Keylong. Arrive at the destination early in the evening and have an adventurous overnight stay in tents. Day 04: Jispa to Sarchu(4290m) | 90km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 6 Hours Altitude Gain - 1090m Highlights - Deepak Tal, Baralacha La, Riding along Tsarap River

Keep yourself completely hydrated by drinking a tonne of water as we are going to spend the night at above 4000mt altitude. Today’s ride is one of the shortest rides of the expedition but the adrenaline level remains high as the terrain is full of adventure. After crossing Darcha, keep riding on the Manali-Leh Highway towards Deepak Tal. The road from here starts to ascend steeply towards the treacherous Baralacha Pass(4890m), negotiating Zing Zing Bar and crossing the stunning emerald lake, known as Suraj Tal. Just after crossing Baralacha, halt for some time and have some well-deserved lunch near Bharatpur. We continue our ride to Sarchu on the same road, although the terrain gets changed quite a bit along the way and Tsarap River is visible on the left side carving and raging through the mountains. Arrive in Sarchu later in the day and be prepared for a rather uncomfortable overnight stay in a tent. Day 05: Sarchu to Leh(3500m) | 250km

Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Loss - 1090m Highlights - Gata loops, Nakee La, Lachung La, Morey Plains, Tanglang La, Riding along Indus River

Start riding after an early breakfast as today’s going to be a long but exciting day of riding. Water-Crossings are a common sight on the road while riding to Leh and the ideal time to cross them is early in the day. Just after leaving Sarchu, we start to ascend towards Nakee La(4769m), crossing the zig-zag Gata Loops which is a series of 21 hairpin bends within a span of just 7km. The descent from Nakee La is barely even finished and the ascent towards another high pass, Lachung La(5059m) begins. The descent from Lachung La brings us to the town of Pang(4600m) where we halt for Lunch. The landscape starts to change after crossing Pang and the plateau of Morey Plains starts and stretches for 45km. Closer to the end of the plains, we start climbing the Tanglang La(5328m), the highest motorable pass on the Manali-Leh Highway. After crossing the 3rd high pass of the day, continue riding towards Leh along the mighty Indus River on the left side. Reach Leh in the evening and relax in the hotel. Day 06: Rest Day in Leh Replenish your energies with a healthy breakfast and enjoy a relaxing day in Leh. The first half of the day is saved for a regular check-up of the bikes and the rest of the day can be spent visiting a few sightseeing places in and around the city. Stop by the Leh Palace and enjoy the splendid panoramic views of the Stok Kangri mountain range from the terrace. You may also choose to visit the Shanti Stupa and the local market to indulge in some shopping and try out the Ladakhi cuisine at the local eateries. Spend the night at the hotel. Day 07: Leh to Nubra (3048m) | 160km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 7 Hours Altitude Loss - 452m Highlights - Khardung La, Diskit Monastery

After a rather relaxed day in Leh, we continue our expedition and start riding towards Nubra Valley through what’s considered the highest motorable road in the world i.e. Khardung La(5359m). The road towards the pass is well paved and tarred till the checkpoint near South Pullu and after crossing the checkpoint, the road starts to get slushy with loose rocks on one side. Get yourself clicked after reaching Khardung La and hit the road quickly as it is not safe to spend much time on top of the pass due to the high altitude and thin air. We stop for a quick lunch after climbing down from the pass and then continue our journey. After riding for another couple of hours, we make a brief stop to visit the 32m high Maitreya Buddha statue in Diskit Monastery. Our arrival in the valley will be welcomed by the white sand dunes and the sightings of the double-hump Bactrian camels grazing. Stay overnight at the hotel/campsite. Day 08: Nubra to Pangong(4250m) | 260km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Gain -1202m Highlights - Riding along Shyok River, Water Crossings

After having breakfast, we start riding towards the most photographed destination in Ladakh, Pangong Lake. Despite the fact that we are not going to cross any high pass today, the ride should be quite interesting as we ride on the much less traveled road via Shyok. Most of our ride is going to be along the beautiful Shyok River and through the villages like Agham, Shyok, Durbuk, and Tangste. The road remains slushy along with some exciting water crossings and rocky terrain so being cautious is important. After crossing Durbuk, the last stretch of the ride is going to be along the lake. From the very first glimpse, the lake leaves an everlasting impression on the visitors. Get yourself photographed and just admire the wonder that is this shimmering blue lake. Overnight stay in tents.  Day 09: Pangong to Leh(3500m) | 150km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 5 Hours Altitude Loss - 750m Highlights - Chang La, Druk White Lotus School

Wake up to an enchanting sunrise over Pangong Tso and recommence your Ladakh expedition. Today we are going to ride the same route that we rode yesterday and after crossing Durbuk, we will start climbing the third highest motorable pass in the world, Chang La(5360m). After crossing Chang La, we halt for Lunch. After eating, we start our journey to Lah via Karu from where we start riding on the Manali-Leh Highway. Just before reaching Leh, we are going to pass through the Thiksey monastery and the popular Druk White Lotus School. There will be a short halt to explore the monastery and take some pictures. After riding for approximately an hour, we will arrive in Leh for the second time during the expedition. Stay Overnight in a hotel. Day 10: Leh to Kargil(2676m) | 220km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 6 Hours Altitude Loss - 824m Highlights - Fotu La, Namika La, Lamayuru Monastery

The ride from Leh to Kargil takes relatively less time as the roads are in pretty decent condition. We bid adieu to Leh and follow the mighty Indus River towards Kargil on the Leh-Srinagar Highway. The landscape is mesmerizing all along the way as we ride through a spectacular moonscape to reach Lamayuru, which is home to the highest located monastery in the region. Just after Lamayuru, we start the gradual climb towards the Fotu La(4108m) and after climbing down the pass we start the climb towards another high pass which is Namika La(3700m). Both of these passes are in the Zanskar range and take us into the Musbekh Valley. We pass through multiple picturesque villages en route to Kargil. Stay overnight. Day 11: Kargil to Srinagar(1585m) | 202km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 7 Hours Altitude Loss - 1091m Highlights - Dras War Memorial, Zoji La

Wake up the chilly Himalayan air and get ready for what is going to be one of the most incredible riding experiences. We check out of our accommodation and start riding towards the Kashmir Valley via Dras, which is regarded as the second coldest inhabited place on earth. Just before reaching Dras, we take a short break at the Dras War Memorial. After Dras, we start riding uphill towards Zoji La(3528m) and the views from the top are just indescribably beautiful. After crossing the pass we enter the breathtaking valley of Sonamarg which is a major tourist destination. Another couple of hours of riding through the valley take us to Srinagar. Stay overnight in a houseboat/hotel. Day 12: Srinagar to Pathankot (332m) | 330km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 10 Hours Altitude Loss - 1253m Highlights - Riding down Himalayas, Jawahar Tunnel, Syama Tunnel

Today’s ride is going to take us through the stunning valleys of Kashmir to the plains of Pathankot in Punjab. Although the distance is rather long, the riding pace should be quite swift as we will be climbing down and the road conditions are pretty decent. On the way to Pathankot, we are going to pass through two of the biggest tunnels in the region i.e. Jawahar Tunnel(2.85km) and Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel(9.2km). Arrive at the hotel and have a good night of sleep as tomorrow is also going to be a long day of riding. Day 13: Pathankot to Delhi (216m) | 485km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 11 Hours Altitude Loss - 116m Highlights - Lush Green landscape throughout

Today marks the last day of this once in a lifetime adventure. We need to start as early as possible as the distance to be covered today is the longest on this 13-day expedition. The journey should be pretty uneventful as we are going to be riding on wide tarmac roads through the plains of Punjab and Haryana. Arrive in the capital by late evening and reach the very place where it all started from. Get photographed with the entire gang one last time on this epic voyage and bid farewell to your motorcycle and your fellow riders. Trip Ends.

FAQs for Leh Ladakh Bike Tours:

1. What are the different routes to reach Leh?  Leh is accessible by road essentially from two different regions i.e. Kashmir Valley in west and Himachal in south. To get the best Ladakhi experience, one should enter from  Manali and exit in Srinagar or vice versa.   2. What is the ideal duration for a Ladakh bike trip? A bona fide Ladakh bike trip takes a minimum of 11 days if you want to experience all that this remote cold deserted region has to offer. There’s also an option of doing a Ladakh bike trip in 5-6 days if you fly in/out of Leh and cover places such as Nubra and Pangong. Although, flying in/out implies that you miss the adventures that the Manali-Leh Highway and the Srinagar-Leh Highway offer. 3. What is the ideal season to visit Ladakh? The open season for Ladakh is between June to September if you want to ride across all the high altitude passes such as Rohtang La, Baralacha La and Khardung La. 4. What type of clothing/gear is required for a Ladakh bike trip? Carrying the right kind of clothing is extremely important as you encounter all sorts of difficult weather/terrains ranging from humidity to biting cold and water crossings to snow-covered passes. The idea is to keep you warm and dry. Full body thermals along with a jacket are absolute necessities. A rain suit along with high ankle waterproof shoes/gumboots are to be carried. About the riding equipment, elbow guards and knee pads provide much-required safety apart from the helmet. 5. What are the must-see places during a Ladakh bike trip? Rohtang La, Baralacha La, Leh, Khardung La, Nubra Valley, Turtuk, Pangong Tso, Chang La, Tso Moriri, Kargil, Batalik, Zoji La, Srinagar. 6. What type of motorcycle is suited for Ladakh? The terrain on a Ladakh bike trip changes drastically in different locations. There should be enough power in the engine to manoeuvre through high passes and terrains such as slush, snow and even water crossings. Although Adventure Motorcycles are ideal, any motorcycle having a 200cc engine or above should do the job.  7. How good is the tourist infrastructure in Ladakh? Biking in Ladakh has become one of the most popular road trips in the world and that’s why the tourist infrastructure gets better every year. There are plenty of options available for accommodation/food throughout the entire biking circuit. Mobile reception is available only in the major towns so be prepared to be off the grid for some time.

Reviews for The Dream Ride Motor Bike Expedition to Ladakh

Awesome experience!

Go for it guys! It is the best possible choice if you are looking for bike trip to Ladakh. Had an awesome time with the group.

Value for money, food was delicious, and the team was excellent in handling the member and the bikes. No issues faced at all. Thanks for the adventure folks!

I travelled all the way from Kolkata just to experience the beauty of Ladakh in most adventurous way possible and it proved to be worth all the effort I made. Everything was perfect in terms of service and food.

2500 kms plus in 13 days of this Motorbike Expedition to Ladakh. Oh God, what an experience! I will never forget this ride. But you know what was the best part about this bike trip to Ladakh? The ride operators were so cool! and so approachable! The mechanics were very knowledgeable. The bikes performed well. And we rode them on such diverse kinds of roads so it was amazing that not even one broke down midway. Even while off-roading and river crossing, the whole thing was so much fun!!! I would do it again and again each year. Thanks, Adventure Nation for making this possible!

A bike trip to Ladakh is not the easiest of things to accomplish but all its difficulty fades away in the face of how satisfying it is when you finish the whole thing and not just that...even while you're on it, even while you're riding all the way to Ladakh you're feeling amazing no matter how hard the terrain looks like. And then there are particular moments in the bike trip that make you feel extra spectacular, especially camping in Nubra and looking at Pangong lake. Waking up to a sunrise at Pangong Tso is one of the best visuals to feast your eyes on! Thanks for this experience, Adventure Nation.

The most important part of a bike trip to anywhere is how much you can rely on the bikes. Because I have been on many bike trips before and twice to Ladakh, if your bike is giving you problems even after the test ride and getting it initially checked, then the trip is going to be tiring. That's why I wanted to make sure I go with the best guys. I booked this trek through Adventure Nation for a departure in August. Adventure Nation put us with the best bike trip operators in the game, thanks so much! Whole trip was so tension-free, thanks to that. The operators have been doing it for the longest time so they have an idea of what they are trying to do here! Thanks again!!!

My bike trip to Ladakh was my bachelor's trip as a last trip with the boys right before my wedding. To say the least, it was so good and so refreshing, it was the best thing I could've asked for. I LOVED everything about it. The rental bikes were great and in great shape to be driven down bumpy roads or good roads or river bed roads or off-roading altogether. And I had all these experiences on this trip! This one was such a delight, by the end we were already making plans to revisit. Thanks so much Adventure Nation for making this so special!

Almost a lifelong dream, this biking trip was so long due. Honestly, it will stay fresh in my memories for a long time from now. Loved the people that went with us. Almost ten of us were there. Out of which three were my friends who I had planned this trip with. Man, thanks for the amazing service. The bikes were in great shape and the food and the staying arrangement was also taken care of in the best way possible. This is why I chose you, Adventure Nation.

This is my first time on a biking trip but second time with Adventure Nation. Last time I went to Hampta pass trek. Had amazing fun there as well. This time it was a blast! It was so much fun with all the people including the staff that was with us to look after the bikes and our food and accommodations. I am still so excited. Never had a better experience.

We covered close to 2500 kms on our bike tour to Ladakh. The route we were given was great, because it covered most of the picturesque trails that we were hoping to ride through. We also camped along side Pangong Tso lake, which was definitely the best campsite. Remember to pack light because you will not need as much clothes as you will need biking gear and other necessary stuff. Also, get some experience of long bike rides before you do this because it will tire you a little sometimes. But we always stuck to the plan till the end!

Take the ride of your life but plan adequately before you decide to go. Better to book through an agency like Adventure Nation, because we were given a detailed itinerary and full mechanical support throughout. And you don't have to carry extra stuff like camping materials and all if you go with them. Also if you are going solo it is safer to go with these guys because you will definitely find some rider friends. Amazing trip. Ladakh is a beauty obviously, and the winds that touch you when you ride through it will give you a feeling out of this world.

I have made two trips to Ladakh before this. Once was on a vacation, and the other time was a biking trip. This time I booked through Adventure Nation along with two of my friends. What a fun time. Had amazing time there. The itinerary was great and we did not have to look around for accommodation and meals as it was all taken care of. Amazing! Thanks for the time.

Every biker dreams of riding in the mystical lands of Ladakh. The cool mountain air, the calmness of the road, the beautiful Himalayan vistas and the rhythmic sound of your bike make a Leh Ladakh bike trip an absolute must for any motorcycle enthusiast. We have been to Ladakh twice and have created this perfect 14 Day Leh Ladakh itinerary to help you plan your trip.

While there are a number of tour operators who offer tour packages for various durations, often times people don’t know what to expect them to include in their tour. Keep reading to ensure that you know all the details of a exploring Leh-Ladakh on a motorcycle.

If you’re a group with 3 or more motorcycles, you can follow this itinerary word by word and ensure an epic Ladakh road trip ! However, if you’re a solo rider or just two bikers, we recommend you join a group just to ensure that there’s some kind of help while accessing the remote areas of Ladakh. You can either find fellow travelers on Facebook groups or approach these groups at different road stops on Ladakh highways. Bikers are generally a friendly bunch and look out for each other. Hence, they won’t mind if you join them.

Before delving into a detailed itinerary, we have attempted to answer a couple of common questions that people have asked us numerous times while while planning their Leh Ladakh bike trip.

Quick overview

How Long is the Leh Ladakh Bike Trip?

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip

The most popular and endearing Leh Ladakh bike trip is about 15 days long and it covers all the important stops around Leh. This trip generally starts from Jammu/Srinagar and ends in Manali. There also people who choose to fly directly into Leh and just see the important locations around Leh. Such a trip can be completed in 5 to 6 days. We’ve explained how you can easily convert this 14 day itinerary to a 5 Day Leh Ladakh itinerary below.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Best Time

The best time for a Leh Ladakh Bike trip is from May end to September when the temperatures are bearable and the mountain passes have opened . After September, the mountain roads generally close due to extreme temperatures and landslides. Before April, due to harsh winter conditions and unpredictable rainfall, it becomes a little risky to conduct a Ladakh bike trip.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Cost

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Highway

An average Leh Ladakh bike trip cost for 15 days is somewhere around Rs. 27,000 to Rs. 30,000 per person if you’re taking your own private vehicle. This cost includes food, accommodation in guest houses or camps and fuel.

Camps and homestays generally have options that include breakfast and dinner and the cost is very reasonable. While riding, there are numerous shacks/dhabas where you can have a good meal for as low as Rs. 100. These include breakfast options like parathas, omelets, sandwiches, butter toasts and coffee while lunch options include Tibetan delicacies like thukpas, momos, chowmein and local North Indian delicacies. If you opt for Non-vegetarian food, it’ll cost youa little more.

If you’re renting a bike for the entire trip, this cost will rise to Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 60,000 per person. The bike rent and fuel cost shall be divided into two in case you’re taking this Leh – Ladakh bike trip with a pillion rider.

Your total cost also depends on the type of bike that you’re renting. The following are the latest bike rental rates in Ladakh for the most popular brands:

  • Royal Enfield Classic 500 CC – Rs. 2,000/day
  • Royal Enfield Himalayan – Rs. 2,500/day
  • BMW/GSR 310 CC – Rs. 3,500/day
  • Bajaj Avenger 220 CC- Rs. 1,500/day
  • Scooty (Activa/Access) – Rs. 1,100/day

An additional Rs. 150/day is charged for Ladakh carrier and saddle bag .

Leh Ladakh Packing List

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Packing list

Despite recent developments, Ladakh is still quite a remote location. Basic utilities might be readily available in the town of Leh, but in more remote areas, they are quite scarce. So, it’s better to pack them in advance to avoid shortage or paying premium prices for the same.

Also, you shall also need to pack weather sensitive clothing like rain covers, thermal wear, safety gear for riding a bike in Ladakh and some common spare parts for your bike . In addition to this, it’s necessary to carry medication for basic ailments as you don’t know when you might need them. Pack a go-to medication kit along with your bike’s first aid kit to take care of this.

To guide you better for your Ladakh trip, we have created this detailed Leh Ladakh Packing List that you absolutely should follow. We recommend referring this list to ensure that you are prepared for all contingencies during your Leh Ladakh Bike Trip .

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Route

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Route

The best and the most convenient route for your Leh Ladakh bike trip starts from Jammu/Srinagar and ends in Manali. For a classic Leh Ladakh Itinerary travel in a clockwise direction starting from Jammu and take stops at the following hubs :

  • Nubra Valley

For visiting Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake, you shall need to come back to Leh to resume your journey as there are no proper roads connecting these locations . There is a new direct route that connects Nubra Valley to Pangong lake via Shyok Village and Wari La. Despite the development of this route, it’s a little riskier to travel by bike . Hence, we recommend that you go back Leh and leave for Pangong Tso the next day.

This Leh Ladakh bike trip route is planned in such a way that it takes care of acclimatization and comfort for beginners as well as advanced riders. The important thing is, that you start from Srinagar or Jammu side .

Why it’s better to start your Ladakh Bike Trip from Jammu?

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Road

We have visited Leh twice. Once from Jammu side and once from Manali side and we recommend choosing the former route . The following are the main reasons for starting your Ladakh bike trip from Jammu side:

  • If you’re taking your own bike to Ladakh, the best, most convenient and cheapest way to transport it is by train . Indian Railways does a fabulous job of packing and transporting your bike to Jammu (the most well-connected station near Ladakh). A lot of trains from all over India reach Jammu and your Bike will reach there in great condition without any hassle .
  • Jammu is a great hub for bikers riding towards Kashmir, Ladakh and the rest of Himalayas. Hence, with an abundance of mechanic shops, it’s easier to get a couple of modifications done to your bike in Jammu before you start your Leh Ladakh bike trip . We’re talking about adding saddle bags or fitting a luggage rack on your bike or evening getting your bike serviced and ready for exploring Ladakh!
  • However, the most important reason for starting your Leh Ladakh trip from Jammu/Srinagar, is that the ascend to Ladakh from Jammu is a lot easier compared to the one from Manali. The route from Manali side is a lot steeper and a lot of riders struggle with acclimatization. The steeper the ride, the lesser time the body gets to adjust to the change in climate. Acute mountain sickness or any other disease can absolutely ruin your trip.

Now that we have the answered some common questions about a Ladakh road trip, check out the following Leh Ladakh itinerary. We followed this itinerary and had the best time in Ladakh.

14 Day Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Itinerary

The crux of this Ladakh Bike trip itinerary is that you start your ride early in the morning . Through out the route, there’s a possibility of road blockage due to onrushing water due to the melting ice. The later you start, the higher your chances of encountering flooded roads and long traffic jams. Hence, we recommend waking up at 6 in the morning and starting your ride 7 AM. This also allows you to reach your destination earlier and enjoy it more during day time. Additionally, it allows you to take longer breaks at interesting locations enroute.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 1: Arrival in Jammu and gearing up

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip gearing up

Your first day entails your arrival in Jammu and collecting your bike from the transporter (like the Indian Railways suggested above) in case you’re using your own vehicle for your Ladakh bike trip. If you’re hiring a bike, you’ll have to either hire it from a dealer who can collect the bike from Manali. If you don’t find such a dealer, you can ride back to Jammu (400 kms) instead of Chandigarh (300 kms) as proposed below .

After collecting your bike, get it checked thoroughly by the expert mechanics in the Jammu city center. You can make some modifications like a luggage brace or replace your break liners for better performance.

You can spend the rest of the day exploring Jammu. Popular places include the Amar Mahal Museum, Bagh-E-Bahu, the Bahu fort and Shree Ranbireshwar Temple.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 2: Jammu To Srinagar

Distance: 250 kms

Duration: 8-9 hrs. considering usual conditions

Start early in the morning for Srinagar on NH 44. The road condition is great and you might find usual traffic of goods vehicles. Enjoy the first time joy of riding in the mountains here. NH 44 is the most well developed road in this entire Leh Ladakh bike trip.

Stop for Lunch at near Peerah village. Khajuriah Vaishno Dhaba in Peerah is arguably best place to have Rajma Chawal in the world . The perfectly cooked Rajma, rice, dollops of desi ghee and the lip-smacking anar-dana chutney make this the perfect spot for an early lunch.

Farther on the way, you shall cross Jawahar Tunnel, one of the oldest Himalayan tunnels in India . Moreover, at the time of its construction, it was one of the longest such tunnels in Asia!

You shall reach Srinagar by late afternoon. Check into your hotel/house boat and head over to Dal Lake for an evening walk on its beautiful boulevard. You can also opt for a Shikara ride in the lake.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 3: Srinagar to Kargil via Sonamarg and Draas

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Sonamarg

Distance: 205 kms

Duration: 7 – 8 hrs. considering usual conditions and traffic on Zoji La

You can start off early in the morning from Srinagar and head to the beautiful valley of Sonamarg. Sonamarg exemplifies why Kashmir is known as heaven on earth.

After a quick breakfast stop at Sonamarg, you shall head towards Kargil via Dras. The route that you shall be taking is the mighty Zoji La . Zoji La is one of the steepest and most under developed mountain passes of the Himalayas. It has been under redevelopment for quite some time. While one side is pretty well developed, the other side is quite a task. Ensure that you are with your group and be extra careful while driving here. The local drivers are quite rash and accidents are quite common.

After descending from Zoji La, you shall see a lot of small yurts selling delicious food cooked by locals. Have a hearty lunch here after an arduous bike ride on Zoji La.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Kargil War Memorial

Alternatively, you can take a lunch break in Dras, another quaint little town on the way to Kargil .

Overnight stay in Kargil.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 4: Kargil to Leh

Distance: 220 kms

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Lamaryu Moonland

The mountain pass that you shall be crossing on Day 4 of your Ladakh bike trip is known as Namika La. The road is very well developed by the Border Road Organization, fondly abbreviated BRO 😅.

After scaling Namik La, visit the famous Lamaryu monastery and its lunar landscapes that have earned it the name Lamaryu Moonland. The landscape formations due to lacustrine deposits in this region reminded us about our epic 4 days in Cappadocia, Turkey .

Your next photo stop shall be the popular Magnetic Hill . It’s a good place to take a break as there are a number of small yurts/shacks selling regional food.

You shall reach Leh by late afternoon or evening depending on the number of stops you’ve taken. You can stay in guesthouses or camps that include dinner . Hence, you don’t have to roam around for food after an entire day of riding.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 5: Leh Local Sight Seeing and Permits

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Dedicate Day 5 of your Leh Ladakh itinerary to local sight seeing and getting the inner line permits for various mountain passes. You can get these permits online at the official website of Leh District Tourism .

💡 Pro Tip : It’s easier to print the permits at home and get them stamped at the Leh Tourist Information Centre or Leh DC office. You will not be able to find a lot of print shops or reliable internet in the mountains.

Local sight seeing in Leh involves the following must visit places:

  • The Khar – A structure that towers over the entire city of Leh. It houses the Leh Palace, the Tsemo Castle and the Namgyal Gompa.
  • Shanti Stupa –  A Buddhist white domed shaped Stupa located over the Chanspa hill.
  • Hall of Fame – A museum respecting the fallen heroes of the Kargil war and highlighting the hardships of the lives of the soldiers stationed at Siachin Glacier.
  • Leh Main Market – The central market of Leh where you can shop for local crafts like shawls, souvenir t shirts and enjoy a lunch at some cute cafes.

💡 Insider tip: We advise you to book your hotel/camp in such a way that you can keep your luggage in the Leh hotel when you make trips to Nubra Valley and Pangong lake. This way, you won’t have to mount, dismount, carry and unload all your heavy luggage at each destination. This way, you will have a room every time you return to Leh but will not be charged for the time you’re staying in Nubra Valley or Pangong Tso. A lot of hotels are accommodating this request.

Call in an early night as the next day, you shall be driving on one of the highest motorable roads on earth – Khardung La.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 6: Leh To Nubra Valley

Distance: 130 km

Duration: 5-6 hrs. considering usual conditions and breaks

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

On Day 6 of your Ladakh tour, you shall be scaling the mighty Khardung La – one of the highest motorable roads on earth located about 17,582 feet above sea level.

The road is reasonably well-developed. However, there can be traffic congestion due its recent popularity with tourists. Moreover, due to the melting ice in the summers, the pass can be flooded and also lead to breakdowns. Hence, we recommend starting your journey early in the morning. By doing so, you shall reach Khardung La top way before other tourists and might even get the entire place to yourself along with the Indian army personnel stationed there.

💡 Insider tip: The army serves a spiced herbal tea free of cost at the top. It’s a great way to warm yourself up in the cold and also indulge in some great conversation with the army personnel.

At the top, a lot of tourists and bike groups get pictures like the one above with the Khardung La top milestone. This picture is an amazing souvenir to get from your Leh Ladakh bike trip.

After reaching Nubra Valley, head over to the famous sand dunes of Hunder and get a picture with the Himalayan Bactrian Camels. These camels are unlike any that you might have seen. They are furry, sturdy and have two humps instead of a single one like regular camels.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

A lot of people opt to ride these camels. We request you not to do so as the it’s cruel and the camels hardly get any rest due to the onslaught of tourists. Instead, get a picture with them for a memorable, cruelty free souvenir from Ladakh.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 7: Relax day at Turtuk Village

Distance: 85 kms

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Take a well deserved break from long bike rides in the beautiful Turtuk village in Nubra Valley. The village is located very close to the Line of Control (LOC) and is known as the gateway to the Siachin glacier .

You will have to park your bikes at the designated parking spots at the entrance of the village and continue on foot . The village is constructed like a beautiful maze set between cherry and mulberry orchards. You might even encounter a lot of cherry trees in the streets of Turtuk village.

Turtuk is a photographer’s dream. It is located in a beautiful valley surrounded by towering mountains. The landscape is green in contrast to the rest of Ladakh as it is irrigated by glacier water distributed in the village through canals constructed 200 years ago.

There are a number of small cute cafes serving piping hot food. Some of our favorite dishes in Turtuk were Spicy Chowmein, buckwheat pancakes with walnut puree, freshly squeezed mulberry or cherry juice and any local dish made from mulberry, cherry, walnut or apricot!

Moreover, you can also ask for a guided tour of the numerous walnut, cherry or apricot orchards and buy some fruits for home as well if you can accommodate them in your luggage.

Return back to Hunder at your camp/guest house. Overnight at Hunder.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 8: Nubra Valley To Leh

Distance: 130 kms

Duration: 7-8 hrs. considering usual conditions and breaks

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Start your return towards Leh early in the morning as you shall be taking a pretty long stop at Diskit.

The Diskit Monastery houses the tallest Lord Buddha statue in India, that is visible even from its approach road . The statue stands an impressive 106 feet and is an amazing photo spot. Click some great pictures here and explore this 14 th century Diskit Monastery before heading back to Khardung La for your return leg to Leh.

Upon reaching Leh, rest and recover in the innumerable cafes or shop for souvenirs in Leh Main market. Overnight at Leh.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 9: Leh to Pangong Lake

Distance: 223 kms

Duration: 5-6 hrs. considering usual conditions

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

On day 10 of your Ladakh bike trip, start at 7 AM towards the Instafamous Pangong Tso via the mountain pass Chang La.

Pangong Tso or Pangong Lake is the pristine lake that features in the hit Bollywood movie, 3 Idiots . This is very evident as tourism and commercialization have set up many photo spots with “3 Idiots” references.

You shall be reaching the lake rather quickly as the road is quite well developed to boost tourism. Upon reaching the lake, find a spot that’s away from the scores of tourists. The lake is a tranquil paradise and its beauty is in its serenity. Don’t let the crowds take that away from you.

That being said, you still have to get those pictures with this piece of natural beauty. So, sit on some lonesome rock in the middle of the lake and ask one of your rider friends to start clicking. The rush of tourists increases with each passing hour. Hence, visit the lake as early as possible.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Most tourists make a day trip to Pangong lake. However, we highly recommend staying a night in one of the camps along the shores of the lake. This not only gives you private access to the lake without the tourists but also provides you with an opportunity to witness one of the most magical sunrises (picture below) you will ever see.

Overnight in Spangmik.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 10: Pangong Lake to Leh

Duration: 8 – 9 hrs. considering usual conditions and long stay at Thiksey Monastery

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Wake up early in the morning to witness a magical sunrise as pictured above. Relax at the camp by the calm waters of the lake.

Day 10 of your Leh-Ladakh trip entails your return to Leh from Pangong Lake and doesn’t involve any major sites or congested mountain passes . Hence, you can afford to start today’s ride a little late. After a hearty breakfast and a fun bonding session with your bike gang by the lake, start your return journey.

On the way back, pay your respects at the majestic Thiksey Monastery . This humongous temple complex houses the Maitreya (Future Buddha) standing tall at 15 meters, inside the temple complex. The monastery is known for its well-planned architecture, spectacular views and calm vibes.

You shall return to Leh by evening. Overnight in Leh.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 11: Leh To Tso Moriri

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

On Day 11 of your Ladakh bike tour, head to Tso Moriri – one of the highest mountain lakes in the world . The lake stretches out till about 28 kms and provides some of the most beautiful and serene views in the world.

You shall be passing the second highest motorable road in Ladakh, Taglang La. There is another less popular route as well, but if you’re a biker, you’d definitely not want to miss out on scaling Taglang La. It was my favorite mountain pass to cross in the entire duration of my Ladakh bike trip. It is very well developed, provides beautiful views of snow covered mountain peaks and the traffic is considerably manageable as well.

Post Taglang La, the route to Tso Moriri is a rather steep one. The road isn’t that developed, the incline is considerable high and you might have to go off road for longer durations. If you’re not an experienced biker or if you’re driving in the mountains for the first time, I would recommend you to skip Tso Moriri and head straight to Sarchu.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 12: Tso Moriri to Sarchu

Distance: 230 kms

Duration: 9-10 hrs. considering usual conditions

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Start early in the morning from Tso Moriri so that you can reach your next stop, Sarchu before dark.

On the way, you shall be crossing More Plains . More plains are a rare flat land in the Himalayas where there are no ascents or descents on the road and you just keep driving on a flat road. The road is adorned with large stone hills on either side along with plain lands that create an ideal photo spot for you and your bike. Ever seen those Ladakhi pictures of a bike parked on the side of a long, never ending road with mountains on either side? Yes, that picture (like the one above) was taken on More plains. No other road in Ladakh provides the luxury of such an amazing picture.

After crossing More plains, you shall be driving on the main highway connecting Ladakh to Himachal Pradesh. So, expect a lot of truck traffic and be careful as a number of accidents have taken place on these roads.

Reach the tent city of Sarchu before nightfall. There is one main bridge that connects Sarchu to the main highway. If the bridge gets flooded, you might not be able to enter Sarchu.

There are a number of budget, mid-range and luxury camps in Sarchu for your night stay which also include dinner and breakfast in the room rate. Sarchu has been developed as a tent city as it falls at a convenient distance for bikers riding from Leh to Manali. So, finding food and accommodation shall not be a problem. However, advance booking is still recommended.

Overnight at Sarchu.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 13: Sarchu To Manali

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Distance: 180 kms

Duration: 6 hrs. considering usual conditions and breaks

Start the 13th day of your Himalayan bike ride from Sarchu for Manali. The distance is quite short but traffic and fog can be deterrents to a short ride.

On the way, cover the pristine Suraj Tal and Deepak Tal lakes that are visible from the roadside itself.

Have lunch in Keylong, one of our favorite Himalayan towns that has great options for food with numerous cafes.

When we visited for the first time, we had to take the route through Rohtang Pass that added an additional 3 hours to our ride time due to the risky roads, traffic and the fog. However, after the construction of Atal Tunnel, the travel time and distance have greatly reduced. Take the Atal tunnel to save time or visit Rohtang if that’s on your bucket list.

After reaching Manali, visit the Hidamba temple or roam around on Mall road to explore Manali at your pace.

Overnight in Manali.

15 Day Leh Ladakh Itinerary: Buffer Day/day exploring any of the locations in detail

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

You can easily add another day to your 14-day Leh Ladakh bike trip by keeping a buffer day for unforeseen circumstances like landslides, road closures, harsh weather, etc. If there are no such unavoidable situations, you can dedicate an extra day to any of the locations mentioned above to explore them further or relax and take in its beauty.

We suggest that you don’t add any additional location from the ones stated above on your extra day. That will lead to increased fatigue and lesser joy. You are on a holiday after all.

If you prefer travelling in trains, then the nearest train station is Jammu which is accessible by all major train routes of the country.

You can also board state-run buses from Srinagar and Leh to Kargil.

But the real essence of Kargil comes with a road trip. Bikers from all over the country make their way to Kargil and enjoy its aura before heading towards Ladakh or Kashmir.

Main Bazaar serves as one of the prominent attractions for food lovers visiting Kargil. With its wide variety of local and cross border flavors and cuisine, Kargil is truly a delight.

You can choose from Thukpa, Sugu and Meat Chawal to Kashmiri, Indian and continental cuisines.

Places to visit?

Mulbekh Monastery

With a 9 meter tall idol of Buddha and scenic views at its backdrop, Mulbekh Monastery enchants every visitor in a unique way. Although it is 36 km away from Kargil but considering its history and various theories around its origin, Mulbekh Monastery manages to garner enough footfall. If getting gripped by a sense of calm is your thing then Mulbekh Monastery is the place for you.

Drass war memorial

Who isn’t in awe of Indian army and the way they won the Kargil war of 1999 but it came at a cost. So in order to pay tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the Kargil war, a war memorial was set up in Drass village. With pink sandstone enhancing the structural beauty of the memorial and a gallery showcasing the relics from the war, Drass war memorial is a must for everyone who visits Kargil.

Main Street

Kargil not being a major tourist attraction, doesn’t offer much on some fronts but it tries to compensate in its own unique way. Same is the story with the Main street market, though it’s not swamped with brands and fancy outlets but still it offers enough to be considered by the tourists. You can buy dry fruits or local folk music and take a part of the culture with you.

Lamayuru Monastery

Lamayuru Monastery is quite famous among the seasoned travellers because of its architectural marvelousness and the way it instills a sense of peace in one’s mind. With typical Ladakhi mountains around it and the teachings of Budha floating in its air, Lamayuru Monastery wouldn’t disappoint you. Also, it allows cars to come close to the premises so less walking!

Best places to visit are either the ones that attract a lot of people or a place which is underrated yet spellbounding. Suru basin falls in the latter category. With the suru river flowing through the valley and mighty Himalayan mountains looking over it, Suru basin reflects serenity like no other. Still it garners less footfall owing to the dirt track like roads that lead to it. But if you look for adventures and places that makes it worth your while then you should surely visit the Suru valley.

Sonmarg, literally meaning “meadow of gold”, is one place that makes it to the ‘places you should visit before you die’ list of every travel enthusiast you’ll come across. Being more than just an alley of blue snow and golden sunshine, Sonmarg has glacial  mountains  against the blissfully ethereal skies as its backdrop, making it nothing less than a hidden paradise. The place witnesses a very high number of tourists during the bracing season, and shockingly enough a handful during the harsh burying snowfall as well because nowhere else would you encounter the brisk wind that send chills down your bones and perforate every layer of protection while causing much mirth. It lies at an altitude of 2800 m above sea level inclusive of the great Himalayan glaciers of Kashmir Valley namely Kolahoi Glacier and Machoi Glacier in its vicinity, and not to forget Sirbal Peak , Kolahoi Peak , Amarnath Peak and Machoi Peak being above 5,000 m. Sonmarg, apart from being a prominent hinge for trekking, mountaineering, and hiking to locales, is well-received by families as a vacation destination as it is by adventure fanatics.

Sonmarg at a glance

Weather: Day time 5-10 °C night -5-0 °C

Elevation: 9,200 ft

Total Population : 392

Local Language: Urdu

When to visit Sonmarg?

With flora and fauna of the valley instilling a sense of tranquility, the months from April to June serve as the best time to visit, Sonmarg. During these months you can walk across endless lanes of wild flowers, breathing, capturing and admiring the scenic beauty of the place.

How to reach Sonmarg?

For frequent flyers, Srinagar Airport is around 70 kilometers away from Sonmarg. You can hire a taxi from Srinagar Airport to Sonmarg.

You can also board state-run buses from Jammu and Kashmir to Sonmarg.

For an authentic wanderlust experience, you can travel to Sonmarg by road . Jammu is about 400 kilometers away from Sonmarg. On your way, you can enjoy the local marvels of the state and make your trip a little more memorable.

For a traveler, food plays an important part in enjoying a trip and getting hold of the true essence of the place. Sonmarg leaves no stone unturned in this aspect as well with its wide variety of local flavors and cuisines.

Along with a cup of Kahwa , you can go for Yakhni , a traditional lamb based dish cooked in curd based gravy and deal with the cold and cravings at the same time.

Rogan Josh , another traditional lamb-based dish, when served with saffron rice, sets the tune for the entire day. For non-vegetarians, Sonmarg is no less than a food haven.

But if you are a vegetarian then also you don’t need to get disheartened, Dum Aalo will come to your rescue at any time of the day.

Places to visit in Sonmarg

Thajiwas Glacier

Being situated near alpine forests, having a blanket of snow covering it in all seasons and the rays from the sun falling on its surface making a glitter like effect, Thajiwas Glacier is a beauty to behold. You can trek all the way from Sonmarg to Thajiwas Glacier as the distance is only 3 km or you can hire a pony and enjoy the serenity of the place along the way. It’s one of the most famous tourist attractions and an important asset for the area. Did we mention the various waterfalls around the Glacier? Well now you know where you should be heading in the next summer season.

Zoji-La Pass

If high altitude places offering a serene view of the world are your thing then you must stop by Zoji-La Pass while visiting Sonmarg. It boasts off an altitude of 3528 m above the sea level and acts as a bridge between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Given its geographical importance this pass is quite famous among travelers from all over the country but it’s equally dangerous if not travelling with an experienced driver. So make a note of that.

Vishansar Lake

Ever wondered about seeing a lake surrounded by lush forests and mountains in its backdrop? Well if yes then Vishansar lake should surely find a place on your list. Nature did it’s finest work in and around this lake. Also keep an eye for the fish population it holds.

Baltal Valley

The ever so quaint Baltal Valley lies at the foothills of the Zojila pass, and sets out the entry for the famous Amarnath trek being just 14km away from the Amarnath Cave. The blue mountains laced with white sheet of snow surrounding the green limitless meadows is what makes Baltal a major tourist attraction, not to forget that it is actually an extension of the ‘meadow of gold’. Within a proximity of 15 km from Sonmarg, Baltal Valley is  easily accessible from Jammu by road via Srinagar.

Nilagrad River

Nilagrad river is not just a tourist attraction but is a water body of importance for the locals. It is believed to have healing powers hence it attracts a lot of people everyday. It supports a wide variety of flora and fauna around it as well.

Leh ladakh bike trip itinerary — how to spend 6 days in ladakh by motorbike.

ladakh trip with bike

Traveling to Ladakh in general and traveling to Ladakh in particular by motorbike in terms of routes are almost the same. This article shares my own experience. Especially coming from a guy who has never ridden a clutch and a large displacement. You should only consult and synthesize more people and especially prepare carefully what you can prepare. Only then can we decide through practice in Ladakh: What motorbike to rent, which route to take, and how to get around by bike. Because before leaving, I searched for information and then messaged each person to ask. When I finally come to Ladakh, I went in a direction that had nothing to do with what I initially thought.

How much does Leh Ladakh road trip by bike?

Depending on each person’s needs, the cost of traveling to Ladakh by motorbike will vary. This is the cost that I paid. Note that this is a temporary estimate of the cost of traveling to Ladakh because each time you visit, the price and cost are different. If you want to make a Leh Ladakh road trip by bike, you can refer to and check the price at the time you go for the most accurate before you go.

ladakh trip with bike

I flew from Vietnam to New Delhi and below is the following costs:

  • Round trip air ticket Vietnam – New Delhi is about $235.80
  • Round trip air ticket New Delhi – Leh ticket is about 196.50
  • Hotel average cost is around $23.58/night, total 5 nights about $117.90
  • Eating and drinking is about $15.72 per day, total about $121.90 including additional expense
  • Renting a car is about $18.08 per day, total for 5 days is about $90.39
  • Gasoline is about $58.95
  • Permit for tourists entering and leaving areas $8.65 per person
  • The extra cost is about $78.60
  • Total airfare of 432.30 + 8.65 license fee to visit + $463.74 gasoline, hotel fees, and food costs.
  • If you go alone (Ladakh trip cost per person), it’s about $903.91 – $982.51
  • If you go with two people and share expenses, it will be about $589.51 – 707.41

I limit using cash, so almost all the hotels I book on Booking.com and Agoda.com. Just keep a few Indian rupees and dollars for eat and drink. In Ladakh, food and travel costs are very cheap.

ladakh trip with bike

How many days for traveling around Ladakh by motorcycle? (#leh ladakh bike trip itinerary)

Traveling to Ladakh on your own mostly requires a number of days longer than 1 week, which is best to get used to the altitude and habits in Ladakh. Especially when riding a motorbike, you need some extra time to rent a motorbike and get used to driving at an altitude of over 3,000m, and running on the left hand side.

ladakh trip with bike

The total time I spent traveling to Ladakh by motorbike was about 6 days. I arrived in Ladakh at noon on October 8 and spent half a day getting used to the altitude and buying a SIM card. On October 9, I rented a bike and drove around to get used to it and wait for the permit. Departing on October 10 and ending on the evening of October 13.

ladakh trip with bike

Which is the best month to visit Ladakh?

ladakh trip with bike

Ladakh is at its most beautiful starting from April then lasting until mid-October, the closer it gets to November, the colder the weather gets. Some roads will be closed to traffic. So my experience of traveling to Ladakh by motorbike is that you should go around August, September or early October is suitable. Going closer to October will have more yellow leaves, but it will also be quite cold, so prepare clothes carefully at home.

ladakh trip with bike

Which season is good to travel to Ladakh?

ladakh trip with bike

Fall is the most beautiful time to visit Ladakh. As mentioned above, from early August to early October is a beautiful time to travel to Ladakh. Closer to the end of September, the yellow leaves shine the sky, you will have the feeling of running through rows of bright yellow trees. In the distance, the snowy mountains are beginning to be covered in white.

ladakh trip with bike

Some things you need to prepared for a Ladakh trip

ladakh trip with bike

Medicines for high altitude shock, some basic medicines. If you go in the cold season, bring warm clothes to wear inside. Bring gloves for driving, trekking shoes or specialized driving shoes. I also prepared snacks and dried fish from Vietnam. Because I was not used to eating curry when I was trekking in Nepal, I have been obsessed with curry until now (this is because I personally do not like curry, no criticism). Regarding my driver’s license, I changed it to a Pet license. Basically, police also doesn’t stop to check the driver’s license at all, only a few stations that need to check the license are allowed to enter that area.

Entry and flight routes

ladakh trip with bike

To travel to Ladakh in general and motorbike in particular, you need to fly 2 flights. The first route is Saigon to Delhi, Delhi to Leh. Regarding entry in Delhi, just applying for a visa online is quite easy. In addition, you should prepare 2 additional documents as in the comment below, just print out is enough. Especially, you should prepare a ballpoint pen when you arrive at Delhi airport to fill out the immigration information form (take the initiative to look for the form and fill it out immediately, it will save you having to queue for a long time).

ladakh trip with bike

On the Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) – Delhi route, I flew with Vietjet, and on the Delhi to Leh route, I flew with Go Air. After flying to Delhi, after completing the procedures, it will be around 1:00 am. You can stay at the airport early in the morning and take the earliest flight to Leh. If you take a taxi to the hotel to rest, you can go to the taxi counter at the airport for very cheap prices, so you should not book in advance online at high prices, and you won’t be able to take the initiative in the time to get to the airport.

ladakh trip with bike

Regarding luggage, if you are bring a flycam, please note one thing: Absolutely do not leave the flycam in your checked luggage. Note, absolutely do not leave your checked luggage. You take out all the batteries and memory cards along with the remote control and put them in your carry-on luggage, and put the flycam body in your checked luggage. All flights do the same, so you no need to worry.

ladakh trip with bike

When flying to Leh, you are required to present some documents as noted in my comment below. Please present them if required, because depending on the time you fly, the regulations may change or not.

ladakh trip with bike

What to do on the first day in Ladakh?

ladakh trip with bike

Resting and get used to the altitude: I landed in Leh around 12am, had already booked a hotel on Booking.com, got off the plane, went out and asked for a taxi to go straight to the hotel, rest and get used to the altitude first. Regarding this, you should not be confident in your health, just rest and prepare some things before departure.

4G SIM card: In the afternoon, start going to Leh market to visit, finding what you need to buy, then visit the Airtel store to get a 4G SIM card. Just bring your passport and they will guide you through it. It’s quite simple but the wait is quite long.

ladakh trip with bike

Rent and try driving a motorbike when traveling to Ladakh by motorbike

Renting a bike and permit: you should rent a motorbike on the first day or deposit in advance to ask them to get a permit. Because some areas of Ladakh need a permit to get into, similar to a traffic permit. Any vehicle requires this permit, not just motorbikes. When going on a tour, the tour operator will take care of everything, so I don’t need to worry.

ladakh trip with bike

The motorbike I rented was a Royal Enfield 500CC, as shown in the picture, I think choosing this classic model was the right decision. Because when going to Chang La Pass, the snow freezes the road surface. High-clearance bike almost go about 2 meters at a time, but my bike is low so the ride is smooth. When renting, ask someone to prepare a set of backpacks, and a 5 liter can of gasoline. On some long trips, there are no gas stations so you have to have them on hand just in case.

ladakh trip with bike

I spent 1 day driving around Leh, a radius of about 20-30km. If you do not have a permit, ask the rental shop owner which areas you can getting to. Drive to get used to the bike, and get used to right-hand drive. I have never ridden a clutch and have never touched a bike over 130cc so that day was also the day I practiced riding. At first, I planned to let my friend go with me as a main driver, but because he was not familiar with this side.

ladakh trip with bike

I adapted quite well to the altitude and negative temperatures so I didn’t have any problems so I turned around and ran almost the entire route. I admit that the first time I ran a clutch with a large displacement, it was too heavy on the road. Regarding the feeling of driving in Ladakh, people drive quite civilized and not too dangerous, as long as you drive slowly and remember to keep to the left, it’s ok.

Leh Ladakh bike trip itinerary 5 days

Route 1: leh – hunder.

ladakh trip with bike

This is a place to ride camels (actually, I ran astray 60km from Hunder, because the information some of you shared was not the right place to take pictures of camels, just say Nubra, but Nubra is very large. If you search, you will probably find Nubra Valley on Google, You will definitely get lost like me, so you have to find Hunder). You will pass through Khardung Pass, the 4th highest pass in the world for motor vehicles to pass through. After running this pass, you will pass through many passes with different routes. It’s only about 130km, just run slowly and arrive at the village around 5pm and it’s ok.

ladakh trip with bike

Route 2: Hunder – Pangong (#Leh Ladakh bike trip itinerary)

ladakh trip with bike

This route goes through many dangerous passes. Personally, I think this is the most difficult route. Because the road is small with one side of the small pass is cliffs, on this part, I kept running close to the cliff, not daring to look down the cliff because looking at it for a while would make me dizzy. Going closer to Pangong Lake, the weather gets colder, the road is also very bad, there are many gravel roads so running is quite tiring. You should start early to avoid running late in the cold weather and losing your strength.

Route 3: Pangong – Leh

This route is basically not too difficult when traveling to Ladakh by motorbike. You will go up Chang La Pass, the 3rd highest pass in the world for motorbikes to pass through. If you go in mid-October, there is a high chance that you will run in snow on this route. This is also the road most likely to be locked if the snow is heavy, so you should be careful. When I went this time, I had to stand below and wait for more than 2 hours before I could go up to Chang La Pass. I thought the road was locked.

ladakh trip with bike

Above are the 3 routes, you can drive for as many days as you like. I recommend running for longer days. If you go to any village you like, just stay 2 nights and then continue. When I went, I thought the 120-160km route was quite short and could be drive normally. But no, the road is bad and the road is winding all the way, so driving is extremely slow, combined with the cold weather, it’s very tiring. Every time I set out at around 9am, I reach the destination at around 5pm, so tired, so my experience is that you should keep speed at about 60-80km a day to rest. If I’m on a long trip, I’ll play wherever I like, then I’ll get bored and leave, it’s more fun.

Where to stay in Ladakh?

ladakh trip with bike

Almost all of the places I mentioned above can be booked through the Booking or Agoda, so just check the room on these apps first to see if there place to stay when you arrive. If you can, book it right away so it will be easier to have a room when you driving to. Besides, you don’t have to bring too much cash with you.

Some hotels that I stayed at when going to Ladakh, you can refer to. I booked all of these hotels on the app.

Reenam Hotel – Leh

ladakh trip with bike

This hotel is located near Leh market, it takes about 10 minutes to reach the market. The mountain view is extremely beautiful, especially in the hotel there is an apple tree that I asked the hotel owner for some fruit. Eating apples in the cold weather is sweet and sour, dipped in good salt, that’s the delectable experience, guys.

ladakh trip with bike

TIH Hunder Eco Villa – Hunder

I also like this place very much, hotels in the Hunder area or are extremely small ones or are luxury resorts. I kept finding an affordable hotel around $27.62 per night. There is a spacious space overlooking the snowy mountains, and the food in the hotel is also very diverse. If you travel to Ladakh and go through the Hunder region, this is also one of the places worth staying.

ladakh trip with bike

Hotel at Pangong Lake

At Pangong Lake, I didn’t book a hotel in advance, just drove there and went to find a hotel. Basically, the place to stay here is quite simple but inside is complete, especially with hot water as well as blankets and pillows to help you not get cold. So when passing Pangong Lake, just walk along and look for it without needing to book in advance.

Is the food in Ladakh hard to eat?

For someone like me who is not fond of curry, it is difficult to eat this food, but there are still dishes that I can still eat. But the general assessment is that the food in Ladakh will be difficult to eat if anyone does not like the smell of curry, and those who like it, you can eat carefree. Up here, I see a lot of vegetables, so the stir-fried vegetables that I order the most are served with white rice.

In addition, you can also prepare some dry food to bring from Vietnam. It will help make the meal richer and eat more rice. For me, when I go out a lot, especially in cold areas, I try to eat as much rice as possible. To have strength and help the body not get too weak.

Scenery and people in Ladakh

ladakh trip with bike

Traveling to Ladakh is truly a paradise for those who love the beautiful scenery and people in the Himalayan mountains like me. Especially when riding a motorbike, you have the opportunity to drift more and stop more, so it also takes a lot of time to admire the scenery and take pictures.

ladakh trip with bike

On the routes I mentioned above, there is no specific place where you should stop or not. Because basically wherever you like, stop for a little while and you’ll see many interesting places, and if you have extra time, just stop comfortably, especially in the villages hanging off the cliffs.

ladakh trip with bike

CONCLUSION: The thing I regret most about this trip is not having time to travel more, to wander more. But it seems that every land under the Himalayas is a place full of charm, rustic and peaceful. In Nepal, I also have a ‘karmic debt’, which is to return to this place to hike for a long time, staying in the villages around the ABC trek. Ladakh now also has a karmic debt that is returning to long-term motorbike riding, to wander around. I wish I could only run 50km a day so I can stop wherever I want.

ladakh trip with bike

Trips with many experiences always have many emotions and many stories to tell. Images only make those stories more vivid, so my pictures may not be outstandingly beautiful, but they are my actual experiences. I hope you have more motivation to set out to wander under the majestic snow mountains.

Renting a bike from Jammu or Manali is an expensive proposition in itself. The round trip from Jammu to Leh or Manali to Leh and back takes a lot of time and it’s very hectic and tiring. Also, renting a 150 cc to 500 cc bike will cost you a lot.

Is any Permit required for Leh Ladakh Bike Trip?

Yes, Permit is required to visit places like Pangong and Turtuk. Those areas fall under the Actual Line of Control, so Indian tourists, as well as foreign tourists, need to obtain a permit to visit the Lake.

How can I get the Permit to visit Pangong Tso Lake?

Inner-Line-Permit for Indian citizen.

Online : You can apply for Inner-Line-Permit online by  visiting the site , but you need to verify it in the Leh DC office. Visit the tourism section of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, TIC Leh, with valid photo IDs for the verification process. You might need to wait in a queue for a long time during peak tourist season. If you have already booked a tour with us from our Ladakh tour packages, then don’t worry we’ll complete the verification process for you free of cost.

It would be best if you fill your tank in main Leh and then start your road trip. Also, a few of the local stores at various places sell petrol. Do not buy petrol from these local stores unless it’s an emergency, as they are usually adulterated.

A lot of ATM kiosks can be found in main Leh. But in remote places, ATMs are rarely available. So, it would be best to carry the required cash with you before starting the bike trip to a far place from Leh.

Internet speed is good in the main Leh area, but in remote places, the signals would be very weak or no signal at all. We highly recommend subscribing to a BSNL post-paid SIM before visiting Ladakh.

Irrespective of the fact that it is a solo bike trip to Ladakh or with a pillion, this bike won’t have a problem at all. Royal Enfield Himalayan has always been a powerful and sturdy motorcycle to ride. What has made it better now is a refiner engine and higher ground clearance.

The long suspension stroke, grunty engine and a cage chassis makes it a wonder bike to ride in Ladakh. To make things even better, the manufacturers have placed it at a very considerable cost. This 400 cc bike is one of the most budget friendly adventure tourers in the Indian bike market. The pillion seat of the bike is amazingly comfortable. Even after being a 200 cc bike, Hero has managed to offer considerable power in the Xpulse. Not only that, the rider can enjoy a greater torque while riding the bike. The ergonomics of this motorcycle is so well-made that even if you take a pillion with yourself, you won’t feel any problem at all. Although this bike comes in two variants, one is the 350 and the other one is 650 but we have included the smaller capacity in our list.
