President Fillmore believed that by preserving the Union, the Compromise of 1850 would give the nation’s transportation, commerce, and industry an opportunity to develop.  The remainder of his administration was prosperous.  Federal land grants encouraged the construction of new railroads.  Settlement continued to move across the prairies.  In foreign affairs, Fillmore restored some of the good will lost in Latin America because of the Mexican War.  He also sent Matthew Perry to Japan to establish trade and diplomatic relations.  Angered by Fillmore's support of the Compromise of 1850, northern Whigs blocked his re-nomination in 1852, and he returned to Buffalo.  In 1856, he accepted the presidential nomination of the American, or "Know Nothing," Party, but met overwhelming defeat. Although he never again sought public office, Fillmore continued to play a leading role in philanthropic, civic, and cultural life. In 1930, Margaret Price purchased the by then deteriorated Fillmore House and moved the front one and one-half story section to its present location.  She made many alterations to convert the house into an artist’s studio, though the original floorboards, plain interior trim, and most of the windows survived.  The Aurora Historical Society bought the house in 1975 and restored it as a historic house museum.  Today, it contains many period pieces from the time President Fillmore lived there, c. 1830, including the president's bed and antique toys.  Visitors can see the original pantry with tin ware and pottery, the restored fireplace, the Presidential Rose Garden with pre-1840 varieties, and the carriage barn.

Visiting the Millard Fillmore House Near Buffalo, NY

The parlor of the Millard Fillmore House near Buffalo NY

New York has been the birthplace of five presidents, including our 13th president, Millard Fillmore. While Fillmore was born in president day Cayuga County, he spent much of his adult life in the Buffalo area.

To learn more about this life and career, I decided to check out the Millard Fillmore House in East Aurora, a suburb of Buffalo.

Millard Fillmore was elected Vice President in 1848 serving under President Zachary Taylor. When Taylor died in July 1850, Fillmore became president and served in the role until 1853. Interestingly, Fillmore, a Whig, was the last president to not be either a Republican or a Democrat.

Outside the Millard Fillmore Presidential Site in Erie County New York

Fillmore built this home in 1826 and lived in it with his first wife, Abigail, until 1830 while he was a lawyer in East Aurora. Other than the White House, this is the only home that Fillmore lived in that is still standing (though you can see a replica of the cabin where he was born in Fillmore Glen State Park ).

That makes this probably the best place to visit if you want to learn about Fillmore’s impact on American history.

The Millard Fillmore House, which is also known as the Millard Fillmore Presidential Site, is located on a peaceful street a short distance from the village’s quaint downtown area.

The home was originally located on East Aurora’s Main Street but fell into a state of disrepair. Fortunately, in 1930, it was saved from destruction by local artist Margaret Price, who added an addition to the home and turned it into a studio for children’s book illustration work.

Interestingly, also in 1930, she and her husband, Irving Price, were co-founders of the Fisher-Price Company in East Aurora. Margeret served as the company’s first art director.

While the Prices’ connection to the home is only part of the history here and isn’t reflected in the displays, it’s still interesting to think about some of the early Fisher-Price work she may have done in the home while using it as an art studio.

Today, the home is open for tours to those wanting to learn more about the life and legacy of President Fillmore. It has been restored as much as possible to its original appearance in 1826, with the additions restored with period furnishings.

The parlor of the Millard Fillmore House near Buffalo NY

Tours, which last about an hour, start in the living room of this small home. While several additions were added on over the years, when Fillmore and his family lived in the home, it was quite modest.

One thing that really amazed me about the house was how many pieces they had that were owned by or used by Fillmore. These included pieces that were present in several of his homes and even pieces that were in the White House during his tenure as president.

Millard Fillmore Law Desk near Buffalo New York

Pieces belonging to Fillmore that are on display include his law desk, many of his law books, his teacup, and his dresser. There are also several pieces in the museum that contain his signature.

As guides take you through the home, they offer great insight into Fillmore’s life, especially the time before and after his presidency in the Buffalo area.

They also point out features of the home and explain what life was like here in the 1830s. Amazingly, the home still retains its original wood floors and even the original front door and its hardware.

Political posters feature Millard Fillmore at this home in East Aurora NY

The back rooms of the home were added after Millard Fillmore left the home, but still contain many momentos of his life. These include political posters from his elections (He also was the nominee for president on the Know-Nothing ticket in 1856).

In addition to the historic interior of the home, the exterior of the home is quite beautiful.

Even though it doesn’t sit at the home’s original location, a period garden has been added to the side yard. If you are interested in horticulture, this is a neat spot to spend a few minutes checking out.

Overall, the Millard Fillmore Home is a fascinating spot for history lovers to check out when visiting the Buffalo area. And, if you’re in the city and looking for things to do near Buffalo , I definitely think this home is worth the short drive to see.

While in the Buffalo area, don’t miss the grave of President Millard Fillmore at Forest Lawn Cemetery .

Millard Fillmore, who served as the 13th president of the United States from 1850 and 1853, began his law and political career in East Aurora, New York. Millard Fillmore built the house in 1826 for his bride Abigail, besides the White House, it is the only remaining house of the 13th President.

The Aurora Historical Society acquired the structure in 1975 and began returning it to circa 1826. The house now typifies a small frame dwelling of the Federal Period with much of Millard Fillmore’s hand labor in it. The house is furnished with pieces that belonged to the Fillmores from their East Aurora, White House and Buffalo years. Presidential History

Site of an inauguration, an assassination and home to two commanders-in-chief, Buffalo is filled with presidential history.

On September 14, 1901, our 25th and 26th presidents’ lives became fatefully entwined in Buffalo. Here for the Pan-American Exposition, William McKinley ultimately lost his life to an assassin’s bullet and Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office. The  Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site  tells the tale of this pivotal time in American history through high-tech, interactive exhibits. A marker on Fordham Avenue signals the spot where the deadly shot rang out, and the McKinley Monument stands at the center of downtown in memory of the fallen president.

Our 13th president, Millard Fillmore was one of two Buffalonians who served as president. Fillmore lived in East Aurora in a home he built for himself and his new bride. You can visit the  Millard Fillmore House  today. Fillmore’s final resting place is in Buffalo’s historic  Forest Lawn Cemetery .

The other Buffalonian POTUS is Grover Cleveland. Cleveland built his political career in Buffalo, serving as both sheriff of Erie County and Mayor of Buffalo prior to serving as our nation’s 22nd and 24th president. A statue of him stands outside  Buffalo’s City Hall .

You can also see portraits of each of the presidents and first ladies at the  Karpeles Manuscript Museum  at Elmwood and North Streets in the city’s Allentown neighborhood.

Millard Fillmore

millard fillmore house tour

Millard Fillmore became president upon the death of Zachary Taylor in July 1850. Born in upstate Cayuga County, New York on January 7, 1800, Fillmore as a youth endured the privations of frontier life. He worked on his father’s farm, and at 15 was apprenticed to a cloth maker. He attended a local school where he met Abigail Powers, who was 19 years old at the time. They later married in 1826 and had two children.

In 1823 he was admitted to the bar; seven years later he moved his law practice to Buffalo. As an associate of the Whig politician Thurlow Weed, Fillmore held state office and for eight years was a member of the House of Representatives. In 1848, while comptroller of New York, he was elected vice president.

Fillmore presided over the Senate during the months of nerve-wracking debates over the Compromise of 1850. He made no public comment on the merits of the compromise proposals, but a few days before President Taylor’s death, he intimated to him that if there should be a tie vote on Henry Clay’s omnibus bill, he would vote in favor of it.

Millard Fillmore’s sudden accession to the presidency brought an abrupt political shift in favor of trying to give more ground to the southern advocates of slavery. Taylor’s cabinet resigned, and President Fillmore at once appointed Daniel Webster to be secretary of state, thus demonstrating his alliance with the moderate Whigs who favored the Compromise.

When Clay’s omnibus bill failed, Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois broke the legislation into five separate bills, submitting them in piecemeal fashion. At this critical juncture, Fillmore announced his support of the compromise. On August 6, 1850, he sent a message to Congress recommending that Texas be paid to abandon her claims to part of New Mexico.

Douglas’s effective strategy in Congress, combined with Fillmore’s pressure from the White House gave impetus to the Compromise movement. The acts passed both chambers of Congress, and were signed by President Fillmore in September 1850. These pieces of legislation admitted California as a "free state"; organized the territorial governments of New Mexico and Utah on the basis of popular sovereignty; established a boundary between Texas and New Mexico; abolished the slave trade in the nation's capital; and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act.

Fillmore believed that his efforts had averted a major crisis and saved the Union. Instead, this sectional truce left most factions unsatisfied. Fillmore's signing of the Fugitive Slave Act was also heavily criticized by abolitionists. By law, the federal government was now required to assist slave owners in recapturing enslaved people, even if they were found in states where slavery was outlawed. There were also harsh penalties for anyone caught assisting or hiding enslaved people.

As the Whig Party splintered over slavery, Fillmore lost critical support from northern Whigs who opposed the institution. As a result, he lost the 1852 presidential nomination to General Winfield Scott. In 1856, he accepted the nomination for president from the National-American Party (also known as the Know-Nothing Party.) While he was handily defeated, Fillmore captured more than 20% of the popular vote and won the state of Maryland. With this defeat, Fillmore withdrew from politics and focused more on philanthropic endeavors in Buffalo with his second wife Caroline. During the Civil War, he supported the Union and different leaders from both political parties who sought to save it. He suffered a stroke and later died on March 8, 1874.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

millard fillmore house tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

millard fillmore house tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

millard fillmore house tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

millard fillmore house tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
