peru pet travel

Embarking on a journey to Peru with your furry friend can be a rewarding experience, but it requires meticulous planning to ensure a smooth and stress-free adventure for you and your pet. With its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Peru welcomes pets, but there are specific regulations and steps to follow for a successful trip.

  • What is considered a Pet:

A pet is a  privately owned  companion animal  not intended for research or resale  and includes the following animal groups only: Dogs, Cats, Ferrets, Rabbits, Rodents, Hedgehogs, Reptiles, Amphibians and Birds.

Multiple pet bird travel agencies, including USDA APHIS and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), may be involved in pet bird travel. Your pet bird must meet all applicable requirements before travel. Depending on the type of bird you have, APHIS regulations may vary. Due to the possibility of carrying or transmitting certain diseases to the U.S. poultry industry, some pet birds are regulated  as poultry  and must meet different requirements.

Birds regulated as poultry include  chickens, doves, ducks, geese, grouse, guinea fowl, partridges, peafowl, pheasants, pigeons, quail, swans, and turkeys.

If your pet bird  is  listed above, it does NOT qualify for travel as a pet bird.  You must meet specific import or export requirements   for poultry. Visit the  APHIS Import and Export website for live animals  to learn more.

  • Microchip Identification:

Before considering travel plans, ensure your pet has a microchip with a 15-digit ISO 11784/11785 compliant identification number. This microchip should be registered with your current contact information.

  • Vaccinations and Health Certificate:

Research and understand the required vaccinations for pets entering Peru. Most commonly, dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before travel. Obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian within ten days of departure, confirming your pet’s good health and lack of contagious diseases.

The requirements for traveling with your pet are described in the health certificate. If submission will be via the  Veterinary Export Health Certificate System (VEHCS) , you may navigate directly to VEHCS without downloading this  PDF .

  • Tapeworm Treatment:

Depending on your departure location, your pet may need treatment for tapeworms. This treatment is typically administered 24 to 120 hours before entering Peru.

  • Travel Crate:

Invest in an International Air Transport Association (IATA) approved pet travel crate. The crate should be well-ventilated, secure, and comfortable for your pet, meeting your airline’s and Peru’s requirements.

  • Airline Regulations:

Contact your chosen airline well in advance to inquire about their specific regulations for pet travel.  Each airline has different requirements, including the type of carrier, size restrictions, and additional documentation.

Here are some different a common airlines: Latam ,  Delta ,  American Airlines,

There are also fees involved with traveling with your pet to Peru. Of course, the above vet examinations and certifications have costs involved. In addition, airlines will have their extra fees as well.

When you arrive at Peru’s Lima Airport, you will be directed to the SENASA Office. Here you will have to pay a small fee for a pet certificate, which you should keep in a safe, accessible place throughout your time in Peru. There is also a small Peruvian customs fee.

  • Arrival in Peru:

Upon arrival, be prepared to present all required documentation to customs and veterinary authorities. Cooperation and preparedness will facilitate a smoother entry process.

  • Quarantine:

Understand if there are any quarantine requirements for pets entering Peru. In most cases, quarantine may not be necessary if you have followed the steps.

  • Local Regulations:

Familiarize yourself with local regulations in Peru regarding pet ownership, leash laws, and any other guidelines. Being aware of these rules will help you navigate your surroundings more comfortably.

  • Emergency Contacts:

Keep a list of emergency veterinary contacts in Peru. This readily available information can be crucial in case your pet requires assistance during your stay.

peru pet travel

Traveling with your pet to Peru can be an enriching experience, and careful preparation is key to a successful journey. Adhering to the outlined steps and staying informed about the latest regulations can ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure for you and your beloved companion.

Located on top of a mountain in the middle of a tropical forest, it is considered the best tourist attraction in Peru. The historical sanctuary of Machu Picchu  is a place that captivates tourists not only because of its dazzling architectural beauty, but also because of its important historical-cultural legacy, which has led it to be recognized and admired throughout the world. This ancient Inca city is one of Peru's most precious treasures. It was built in the mid-15th century and it is believed that it was one of the residences of the ninth Inca of Tahuantinsuyo, Pachacútec, although there are also the remains of a sanctuary. Its name means old mountain, and refers to the place where it is located, at about 2,453 meters above sea level, on a rocky premonitory between Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. Currently, this Inca jewel is one of the tourist centers of the country. Travelers go to Aguas Calientes to start the Inca route that Hiram Bingham, of Yale professor, popularized at the beginning of the 20th century. The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is considered one of the seven new wonders of the modern world and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983. It is probably the most amazing architectural construction of the Inca Empire. This citadel is made up of temples, palaces, terraces, monuments, ensembles and walls; In addition to water channels, built with large blocks of stone, without any type of amalgam, proof of the great wisdom of the Inca civilization. The flora and fauna of Machu Picchu are of great importance not only for their natural beauty, but also for their ecological and cultural value. The rich biodiversity present in the area is essential to maintain the ecological balance and sustainability of the region. The flora and fauna of the Machu Picchu area have been used for centuries by local inhabitants, both for food and for traditional medicine. The flora of Machu Picchu is varied, with more than 2,000 species of plants identified in the area. Among the most common plants are orchids, bromeliads, ferns, mosses and lichens. There is also a wide variety of trees, such as alder, cedar, cinchona and molle, growing throughout the valley. The fauna of Machu Picchu is equally impressive and varied, with more than 400 species of birds identified in the region. Among the most common birds are the hummingbird, the quetzal and the cock-of-the-rock. You can also find a wide variety of mammals, such as the spectacled bear, the llama, the puma. Reptiles and amphibians are also present in the area. Among the most common mammals in Machu Picchu are spectacled bears, who "usually feed on fruits, leaves, insects and small mammals." These animals are crucial to the area's ecosystem.

Traveling with a dog in Peru

Traveling with a dog in Peru 1

Do you wonder if traveling with a dog in Peru is possible ? I am happy to share my experience 🙂

After a year in Colombia with my dog Shark, it is time for us to go back to Europe. We cannot leave South America without visiting a few countries, though. The first step of our Latin tour is Peru. Not only is this country famous for being home to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, but also for its delicious gastronomy and its fascinating history. Mid-December 2016. We fly from Bogota to Lima. Shark travels as always in the hold. There is so much to discover in this country but as we only have 10 days, we are going to explore the three must sees: the capital Lima, the imperial city of Cusco and the famous ruins of Machu Picchu.

LIMA WITH A DOG

Lima is the third largest city in South America. It lies along the Pacific coast and therefore offers many beachfront areas to walk dogs. As we stay in a dog-friendly hostel beautifully-named The Flying Dog, we enjoy daily walks in the vibrant Miraflores district and the nearby Parque Kennedy which hosts the Virgen Milagrosa Church and the Municipal Palace. On an afternoon, we take a long stroll following the coastline to Barranco, a laid back district with many restaurants and cafés that welcome pets. The best spot to watch the sunset on the endless Pacific Ocean!

Our favorite dog friendly accomodation in Lima :   Flying Dog Hostels

Dog friendly restaurants & cafés in Lima :

  • La Bodega Verde (Jr. Sucre 335 A, Barranco)
  • Las Vecinas (Jirón Domeyer 219 , Barranco)
  • BLU: il gelato del barrio (Jr. 28 de Julio 202, Barranco)
  • Homemade (Calle Revett 259, Miraflores)
  • Beso Frances (Parque Intihuatana Malecón de la Reserva, Miraflores)

CUSCO WITH A DOG

A few days later, we fly to Cusco, the historical capital of the Incas empire. It is located in the Andes mountains around 11,200 feet above sea level. Luckily, neither Shark nor I get altitude sickness, so we go straight to Plaza de Armas, the fabulous colonial style main square, then climb to Plaza San Cristobal to admire the breathtaking view on the city. Shark plays with some stray dogs on the way and looks clearly intrigued by the friendly llamas, walked by women in colorful traditional dresses.

TIP: y ou plan to visit Cusco and love cats & dogs? Volunteer with  Maximo Nivel’s Animal Care programs  for 1 to 52 weeks! This is a great opportunity to help stray animals in Peru during your stay. You can also take care of alpacas and llamas in a farm outside of Cusco. Check out the all-inclusive projects designed by Maximo Nivel and get ready for an unforgettable experience!

MACHU PICCHU WITH A DOG

On the next day, we leave for Machu Picchu. There are only two ways to get there. The fastest and more comfortable way is by train from Cusco but it is quite expensive for me. Plus, pets can only travel in the cargo wagon in their cage, not with passengers; although it seems negotiable for very small pets. So, I choose the more adventurous way to reach Peru’s most visited site.

After a 6-hour ride through the Sacred Valley, the van arrives at the end of the road, literally. That place is called Hidroelectrica. It represents the starting point of the breathtaking hike through a tropical landscape to reach Aguas Calientes, the touristic village down the Machu Picchu mountain. It is impossible to get lost as the 2-hour flat path follows the train rails. We can even see a glimpse of the ruins on the top of the mountain from the path. The perfect opportunity to take some pictures with Shark as pets are strictly prohibited in the protected archeological site.

I have made arrangements with the hotel to let Shark in the room for a few hours while I visit the legendary Incas citadel. As much as I hate leaving my dog behind, I am deeply amazed by the holy beauty and the mysterious vibes of this unique sanctuary. As to Shark, she enjoys a nice walk when I get back to the hotel and a long hike on the next day to get back to Hidroelectrica.

PET IMPORT REGULATIONS FOR PERU

To be admitted in Peru, dogs and cats must be accompanied by :

  • a vaccination certificate according to the pet’s age
  • a veterinarian health certificate, specifying products used against parasites
  • an official health certificate for export of pets, issued by the official entity of country of origin.

One live animal as pet is allowed. Pets must be presented to the SENASA office (National Service of Agricultural Sanitation) upon arrival. A fee will be charged for the evaluation. In 2017, I paid $30. Warning: Pets arriving without proper documents will be quarantined or re-embarked to point of origin. Check out the IATA’s website  for updated information about pet import regulations for Peru.

Hi Kim, sorry for the delay of my answer! Well, I haven’t mention the hotel I stayed in with my dog in Aguas Calientes because it wasn’t really dog friendly even if they stated they were on Booking. I argued for more than 1 hour with them because they wouldn’t give me my money back nor let me stay because I had a large dog. Eventually they let me stay. If I had to do it again, I would just arrive at Aguas Calientes and looked for a room with the many people offering one in the street 🙂 Otherwise, use the “pets allowed” filter on Booking and double check with the hotel (mail or phone) if they really do accept dogs, what size and if they charge. That’s what I always do after that bad experience. Safe travels!

Hi! Planning on traveling to Peru with my corgi from the US. How did you get an official health certificate for export of pets?

Hi Jocey! I got it from my vet in Colombia. You can find official health certificates in Spanish online too. Safe travels!

' src=

I’m hoping to move to Peru with my dog soon for work, but I’m a bit nervous about the street dog situation. Has Shark ever been attacked? How do you avoid negative experiences with off-leash dogs?

Hi Stephanie, Shark has never been attacked in Peru, but she has been bitten in other countries yes twice. Other people helped me in the street. Since then, I try to always have a bottle of water with me to separate the dogs in case of a fight. And I’m very watchful when I walk. Also, you can walk alone in your future neighborhood in Peru to see if there a street dogs. I would advise you not to worry so much, just to be careful 🙂 Have a safe trip!

Q&A: Pet Travel to Peru

Name: Eileen Number of Pets: 1 Pet Type: Dog Pet Breed: Golden Retriever From: United States To: Lima, Peru

Hi PetRelocation,

I am considering taking my dog with me to Peru for a year or so. Does Peru require quarantine?

Thanks for your question! There is currently no quarantine required for pets traveling into Peru from the United States. Please take a look at this overview of the import requirements via the USDA for more specific information about what you'll need to do.

In addition to securing a health certificate and proof of an updated rabies vaccines (you'll find more details in the above links), you'll also want to book a flight with a pet friendly airline and make sure you have an airline-approved travel crate . When you return to the United States, you'll need to follow these pet import requirements in order to be accepted back into the country (these are pretty comparable rules and there is no quarantine here, either).

Hopefully this helps to start you on your way, Eileen. Please let us know if you're interested in finding out about our door-to-door services, and either way, good luck with everything.

"Thank you very much for your help in getting Cricket here. We are so happy to have him here and he is settling in. Of course the journey was long but he is now back to being his usual self. You really did make the entire process very smooth and easy and we never had to worry about anything. Thanks a lot!"

"Blake and Raven had a wonderful journey. I don't think the trip phased them in the least. They are happily settled and enjoying life in Georgia. Kenny did a wonderful job taking care of them both. He was very conscience and caring, and made sure they were fine before leaving. I will definitely recommend your business to anyone needing to relocate their pet family."

"Samantha is doing quite well. We were very pleased with your service. She is a very important member of our family and we were very stressed about her being on such a long flight. Thanks to all the personal assistance you gave me to prepare her, everything turned out better than we could have expected. If we should ever need to fly out pet again, I can’t imagine using any other service. I would highly recommend Starwood Animal Transport to everyone!"

"After getting our family back (2 Goldens) from NY to London Gatwick I have to congratulate you and your global team for achieving what is no small achievement. Your service in managing the paperwork, the customs clearance, selecting the best airline and route and hand holding the vets through this timely but critical process was, I am sure the only reason everything went through without delay or undue stress. Thanks to you and to all of your team. You are a service benchmark."

"Greg and I wanted to thank you very much for all your work to get Pepper safely back to Australia.I know that we bombarded you guys with a lot of anxious emails at one of your busiest times of the year. We wanted to put on the record that we sincerely thank you for all your guidance and patience with us, and especially for taking on Pepper’s move at a time when we were having trouble getting traction with another service provider – you got us back on track, and very quickly."

"A very BIG thank you to you all! The trio arrived safe and sound this morning around 2am and they were absolutely fine. They seem to have settled well into their new home as if nothing ever happened. I so appreciate all the hard work, care and professionalism that made this relocation happen. 'Starwood' is on my top list of favourites and shall make sure everyone that is ever wanting to relocate pets shall know about you all!"

"Thanks to Starwood Animal Transport, our first experience moving our dog internationally was a very successful one! The communication throughout the entire process was prompt, clear and comforting. Kudos to Ross, Sherry and Nick for providing great customer service.I do believe that in the end, our dog had better care and travel arrangements than we did. I highly recommend Starwood and will certainly use them again in the future."

"I would like to thank you for the wonderful service transporting our four legged kids. It was not just transporting, your updates, the photos and most of all for that moment of happiness when they arrived. Priceless!"

"The people you used at each step were wonderful. The girl who picked him up in Houston was wonderful. The man who delivered him here in Dubai – equally great. I know this is something you and your team do on a regular basis – but obviously this isn’t something we do – and to have our little dog with us here in our new home in Dubai makes our apartment here, our home! Of course, I shall recommend you to anyone wishing to fly a pet – and when it’s time for us to fly home, I’ll be in touch."

"All went very well and my parents and aunt were impressed with the care and organization of the people they met on each end. Thanks so much! Gigi is settling in and has no issues with her crate after the trip."

Pet Travel on Delta

Embark on a journey with your favorite furry companion. Depending on their size, some pets can travel as your carry-on. Note:  Failure to comply with all pet policies and keep your pet in the kennel at all times while in the airport and onboard the aircraft may result in losing the ability to travel with your pet on future flights. Military Pet Travel

International pet travel, carry-on pets.

Small dogs, cats and household birds can travel in the cabin for a one-way fee that is collected at check-in. The pet must be able to fit in a soft-sided ventilated pet kennel that will go underneath the seat directly in front of you.

Please review the following requirements to ensure a safe and healthy flight with a small pet traveling as a carry-on:

  • Your pet must be at least 8 weeks old for domestic travel.
  • Your pet must be 16 weeks old if traveling to the U.S. from another country and at least 15 weeks old when traveling to the European Union.
  • 1 female cat or dog may travel with her un-weaned litter if the litter is between 8 weeks and 6 months of age. There is no limit on the number of animals in the litter as long as they can fit safely in the kennel.
  • 2 pets of the same breed and size between the ages of 8 weeks and 6 months may be allowed to travel in 1 kennel, as long as they are small enough to fit into a single kennel and are compatible. If the pets are allowed to travel in 1 kennel, they will be charged as 1 pet.

Pets in kennels will count as your 1 carry-on item. In addition to the kennel, you are permitted to bring 1 personal item on board the aircraft.

Seating With Your Pet

Customers with carry-on pets may not select seats in the following areas:

  • Bulkhead seats
  • An emergency exit row
  • Seats designated as “no stowage”
  • Flat-bed or Delta One seats
  • Rows 46-51 on the A330-200 aircraft
  • Rows 54-59 on the A330 -300 aircraft
  • Center seats on the B757-200 aircraft

Booking Your Pet

Carry-on kennel requirements.

Be sure to check the aircraft dimensions of your flight to ensure your pet’s kennel will fit underneath the seat directly in front of you.

Your pet and kennel must also adhere to the following requirements:

  • Your pet must be small enough to fit comfortably in a kennel with the ability to move around without touching or sticking out from the sides.
  • The kennel must fit underneath the seat directly in front of you.
  • The soft-sided kennel must be leak-proof and have ventilation openings on 3 sides for domestic travel and 4 sides for international travel.
  • The maximum carry-on kennel dimensions are determined by the aircraft dimensions of your flight, as the under-seat space varies by aircraft. Delta recommends a soft-sided kennel with maximum dimensions of 18” x 11” x 11” since this fits most aircraft types.
  • Your pet must remain inside the kennel with the door secured while in a Delta boarding area, during boarding and deplaning, while in a Delta Sky Club® and while on board the aircraft.

Checking In With Your Pet

When you arrive at the airport, you will need to visit the Special Service Counter to check-in with your pet. At check-in, a Delta agent will ensure your pet and kennel meet the necessary requirements for your trip and collect the required pet fee. Remember to allow extra time at check-in for us to ensure your pet is ready for take-off.

Once you are checked in and have your cabin pet tag, you are ready to go through the security checkpoint where you are required to remove your pet from their kennel.

After the security checkpoint, your pet must remain in their kennel while at the airport, unless they are in a designated relief area.

Delta Sky Club® Pets

Carry-on pet fees.

CAD amount will be charged to exit Canada, while EUR amount will be charged to exit Europe. These fees are established by the contract of carriage in effect at the time of ticket issuance.

Carry-On Pet Exceptions

For any travel to or from the following destinations — with the exception of service animals — pets must travel as cargo and are not permitted in the cabin:

  • Pet travel is not allowed for pets originating in Brazil/Colombia
  • Pet travel is not allowed on flights to Hawaii
  • Jamaica
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Ireland
  • South Africa
  • United Kingdom
  • United Arab Emirates

Household birds are only permitted on domestic U.S. flights excluding flights to Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam. Review based on your destination or connecting flights.

The CDC has an ongoing, temporary suspension that prohibits the entry of dogs, including trained service animals, into the United States from countries that are at high-risk for rabies. During the suspension, options for bringing dogs that have been in a high-risk country for rabies within the past 6 months will depend on where the dogs’ rabies vaccinations were administered, and the number of dogs being imported. Dogs from high-risk countries must appear healthy, be microchipped and at least 6 months of age. For dogs with a travel history in high-risk countries, please review the CDC’s guidance on importation .

Traveling with Pets

CDC is extending its temporary suspension of dog importation from high-risk dog rabies countries until July 31, 2024. This suspension includes dogs arriving from countries without high risk of rabies if the dogs have been in a high-risk country in the past 6 months. Learn about the current rules: What Your Dog Needs to Enter the United States

Taking your dog or cat on a flight abroad? Make sure you have your pet’s documents when traveling internationally and returning home to the United States. Leave yourself plenty of time before the trip to take care of your pet’s required medical care and paperwork. Remember to start the process early.

First Stop—Your Vet’s Office

If you are traveling internationally, tell your veterinarian about your plans as soon as possible. Together, you can make sure your pet is healthy enough to travel and meets the requirements for your destination country  and for your return to the United States. Requirements may include

  • Blood tests
  • Vaccinations
  • Microchips for identification
  • Health certificates

Airlines and countries often have different requirements, so make sure you know what the specific ones are.

Research How to Fly with Your Pet

Give yourself plenty of time to do your homework before your trip. A great place to start is the Pet Travel website  of the US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

Different airlines have different rules about whether and how a pet can travel. Depending on the airline, your pet may be able to travel on your flight either in the cabin or in the cargo hold. Confirm this ahead of time with your airline.

On airlines that allow pets to travel, only small dogs and cats that can fit in special carriers under the seat are allowed in the cabin. Their owners must care for them during any layovers. Some airlines may not allow them in the cabin and will transport them as cargo in a heated and ventilated hold. Cats and dogs may travel and rest better this way, since it is quieter and darker, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Another way for your pet to travel is on a separate flight as an air cargo shipment. If this is your preference, or a requirement based on your dog’s size or the destination country’s rules, then get your pet used to the shipping kennel ahead of time. Make sure the door latches securely to avoid any mishaps in transit. Ask your veterinarian for advice about when to give food and water. If a pet is traveling as an air cargo shipment , you must make arrangements for pickup at the final destination.

Some US carriers don’t allow pets to be shipped between May and September, the hottest months for animals to travel in the Northern Hemisphere.  No matter what time of year, safety is always a concern when pets travel by airplane. If absolutely necessary for a dog or cat to travel in cargo, it must be in a sturdy container with enough room to stand and sit, to turn around normally while standing, and to lie down in a natural position. For more information, visit the US Department of Agriculture pet travel website .

When waiting for a connecting flight, you may have to care for a pet traveling with you in the cabin, while the airline staff or ground handlers care for a pet traveling in cargo. Check with your airline(s) beforehand to see what is required.

Consider Your Pet’s Comfort

photo of a woman checking arrivals and departures screen

Consider your pet’s comfort when traveling. Photo credit: Misty Ellis, CDC

Loading and unloading can be the most stressful part of travel for animals. Consider these tips:

  • Get your pet used to its carrier before the flight.
  • Purchase flights with fewer connections or layovers.
  • Pick departure and arrival times to avoid extreme heat or cold. For example, planning a nighttime arrival to a hot destination may be better for your pet.
  • Consult with your veterinarian. The International Air Transport Association discourages the use of sedatives or tranquilizers because they could harm animals while in flight.
  • Walk your pet before leaving home and again before checking in.
  • If your pet is allowed in the cabin, check in as late as possible to reduce stress.
  • If your pet will be transported as cargo, check in early so it can go to the quiet and dimly lit hold of the plane.

Cruise Ships and Travel by Sea

Different cruise ships have different rules about whether a pet or service animal can travel with you and what documents they require. Confirm this ahead of time with your cruise ship. If you travel with your pets internationally on a cruise ship or other maritime vessel, you will be required to meet federal entry requirements to enter or re-enter the United States with your pets. Note that CDC has temporarily suspended the importation of dogs arriving from countries that CDC considers high risk for dog rabies , including dogs that have visited a high-risk country in the past 6 months.

Requirements for Dogs Leaving the United States

CDC does not have requirements for dogs leaving the United States. However, if you plan to return to the United States with your dog, the dog will be required to meet the same entry requirements as dogs arriving from foreign countries (see below). If you plan to take your dog to a country at high risk for dog rabies , be sure to review the importation requirements  before leaving the United States, because your dog may not be allowed to return to the United States due to the current temporary suspension , which applies to dogs that live in the United States and have traveled to high-risk countries, even if only for a short visit.

Visit the US Department of Agriculture  website for pet entry requirements in foreign countries.

Requirements for Dogs Arriving in the United States

Meet the requirements for dogs entering the United States. Photo credit: Derek Sakris, CDC

Whether returning or coming to the United States, all dogs must appear healthy . There is a temporary suspension   for dogs imported from countries that CDC considers high risk for dog rabies .

Some states may require vaccinations and health certificates. Check with your destination state’s health department  before you leave on your trip.

Some airlines, cities, or states restrict certain breeds, so be sure to check before you travel.

The US Department of Agriculture  has additional restrictions for some dogs arriving in the United States, such as working dogs and dogs intended for resale or adoption.

Requirements for Cats Arriving in the United States

Cats aren’t required by CDC to have a rabies vaccination certificate to enter the United States. However, most states and many other countries require them for cats, and CDC recommends that all cats be vaccinated against rabies. Be sure to check your destination’s requirements and ask your veterinarian before traveling.

Other kinds of pets

If your pet is not a cat or dog, there may be different requirements. Some animals , such as primates (monkeys and apes) or African rodents , won’t be allowed back into the United States. Even if they originally came from the United States, they can’t be brought back here as pets.

Illness or Death of a Pet During Travel

Despite all precautions, pets sometimes get sick or even die on an airplane. Public health officials are required to make sure an animal didn’t die of a disease that can spread to people. They may have to do an animal autopsy or conduct other tests, at your cost, to figure out the cause of death. The animal’s remains often cannot be returned to you after this testing.

Think of Different Options

Make sure your pet is healthy enough to travel by air. If you have any doubts, consider leaving your pet with a trusted friend, family member, or boarding kennel during your trip, or taking another mode of transportation.

With careful planning, your pet will arrive both at its destination and return home healthy and safe.

Whether you’ve fallen in love with an animal that you volunteered with in Peru or are relocating to a new country and want to bring your pet, flying an animal out of Peru isn’t as easy as putting Fido in your carry-on bag.

But it’s not impossible, either.

Get ready to put all “paws” on deck. We’ll help you understand how to fly your pet out of Peru.

Disclaimer: The information in this article is a guide, and Leaving Pawprints isn’t responsible for changes. It’s your responsibility to double-check requirements with your airline and stay up-to-date on Peru’s exit policies and your country’s entrance policies. If you travel with your pet out of Peru, we’d love to hear from you in the comments section, as your recent experience will help others in your “paws. “

Airlines in Peru that Allow Animals

Several airlines allow their owners to fly with their pets out of Peru. Below is a quick chart summary of airlines that fly pets out of Peru on international flights. We’ll then dive into more details below.

  • LATAM Airlines

LATAM offers flights out of Peru for dogs and cats. There are three ways you can fly with your pet , largely determined by their size. They include:

  • In the cabin with you
  • Passenger aircraft hold
  • LATAM Cargo (a separate plane)

On December 15, 2021, LATAM began implementing a new policy that you can only fly out of Peru with a dog or cat that’s at least 16 weeks old.

Delta Airlines

If you’re traveling with a bird, cat, or small dog, Delta allows you to carry them on the plane with you from Peru. The cost isn’t as much as you might think, at only $200 USD for your pet’s ticket. In order for your pet to fly in the cabin with you, you’ll need to ensure they have a Delta-approved carrier and that you have it in advance, for Delta will ask for the carrier’s dimensions when you make your pet’s reservation out of Peru.

If you’re traveling with a larger dog, Delta can arrange to fly them out of Peru in their (precious) cargo flights. Like LATAM, your pet must be a minimum of 16 weeks old to board the flight.

  • SKY Airlines

Sky is a Chilean airline that offers excellent pet travel from Peru. You can book your pet’s flight out of Peru with as little as 48-hour notice, provided SKY has space since only two pets are allowed in the cabin per plane. If your pet and carrier’s total weight is over six kilograms, they can either travel as checked baggage or in SKY’s cargo planes.

Certain breeds of dogs must be at least nine months old to travel and use a sturdier carrier than other breeds. It’s cheaper to add your pet to your reservation at the same time that you book your ticket (a $61 USD fee) versus adding them at a later time (a $73 USD fee).

American Airlines

At the time of this writing, American Airlines doesn’t offer international pet travel out of Peru.

Resources for Flying a Pet from Peru to Other Countries

Meeting Peru’s exit requirements for flying your dog or cat out of the country is only half the battle. You also need to ensure that you comply with your arrival country’s pet immigration rules.

We’re not sure whether this will sound comforting, but if you don’t have all your literal or figurative ducks in a row before leaving Peru, you can pretty much guarantee that your airline will deny boarding for your pet.

So, where do you find pet immigration requirements for your destination country? Contacting your country’s consulate is an excellent start. Below are some resources that can help you out, too, if you’re flying to one of the following countries.

United States: Centers for Disease Control and Protection

Canada: Canadian Food Inspection Agency

United Kingdom: Great Britain Pet Requirements

European Union: Your Europe

Australia: Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment

Rules for Bringing Pets on a Flight Out of Peru

According to the Lima airport , your pet will need to meet requirements set by the National Agricultural Sanitation Service (SENASA) in order to leave Peru. SENASA offers a list of items they mandate, although they encourage you to contact them directly for more details.

To fly your dog or cat out of Peru, your pet will need the following:

  • Health certificate from a certified, private veterinarian
  • Vaccination certificate from a certified, private veterinarian
  • Rabies certificate*
  • Up-to-date on dewormer
  • Exportation certificate from SENASA

*A rabies vaccine is only required if the arrival country mandates it.

You’ll need to visit the SENASA office at the Jorge Chávez International Airport with your pet 72 hours before your flight departs. Their office is open 365 days a year, and they’ll need to know your final destination along with the pet entrance policies for that country.

That means you must fly out of Lima if you’ll be traveling out of Peru with a pet.

If your pet gets approved, you’ll receive the coveted Certificado Zoosanitario de Exportación, which is an exportation certificate that let’s an airline know you have the okay to fly your pet out of Peru.

Additional Potential Requirements

Many countries require one or more of the following items. You only need to complete these steps and present them to SENASA if it’s your arrival country’s policy:

  • Rabies antibody titration test
  • Microchip with ISO 11784 or ISO 11785 (your country will indicate which one they require)
  • Kennel disinfection certificate
  • Payment confirmation

Furthermore, if you’ll be traveling with a Peruvian Hairless Dog, you must obtain a special exportation certificate from the Peruvian Hairless Dog National Protection Committee regardless of the country you fly to.

You might remember hearing about this breed when the Peruvian Hairless Dog Association offered the Obamas one named Machu Picchu upon learning that they were seeking a hypoallergenic dog.

Bringing Pets on a Domestic Flight in Peru

There’s so much more to see in Peru than Lima. So, if you and your dog or cat are elsewhere in the country, you’ll need to head to the capital before boarding your international flight.

Domestic airlines in Peru that allow pets include:

Your pet will need a valid health certificate to fly within Peru. However, you won’t need to obtain a SENASA Exportation Certificate, making the process easier than traveling internationally.

Check List: Flying Your Pet Out of Peru

Phew, what a process! We hope this information helps make it easier to fly out of Peru with your furry or feathered loved one.

We won’t get redundant on you here, as the “Rules for Bringing Pets on a Flight Out of Peru” section covers the essentials. However, below are a few other items to consider to help you prepare.

  • Check your airline’s carrier restrictions and buy the carrier in advance
  • The health and vaccination certificates must be in Colegio Médico Veterinario format
  • You must work with a Médico Veterinario Colegiado (certified veterinarian) from a private practice
