7 Road Trip Outfits to Look Cute and Be Comfortable

Getting ready for an upcoming getaway and wondering what to wear on a road trip ? Take the guesswork out of that question and use my guide for comfort and style while traveling by car. Plus, I’m sharing 7 road trip outfits that will help you stay comfy while looking cute!

Our family has taken so many road trips and I’ve definitely learned what works for road trips and also what you don’t want to wear! Hint, avoid any pants that have buttons on the back pockets!

Dressing For Comfort When Driving Long Distances

Long-distance traveling means spending lots of time sitting in one seat with little to no wiggle room. All the more reason to make sure you are dressing comfortable and able to enjoy the ride.

Where Are You Going? Know Your Destination & Purpose

Deciding what to wear for your journey should be the very next objective after getting your travel plans in order. Once you know where you’re going and what you’ll be doing, you can then think about the attire to wear on the way. I personally dress more “beachy” when my family and I are headed toward the ocean. If going to the mountains, I seem to go for the cardigans and my year-round boots.

Overall, know where you are going and what you will be doing there. Keep in mind any stops on the way as well. If you’re planning to stop for a hike or a dip in a lake along the route, plan for that when choosing your outfit for the day. Plus, you might want to have a pair of boots or flip-flops in the back for easy access at your stop. We often keep a duffel bag or day bag at the ready with stuff we might need for stops along the way.

How Long Will You Be In Car

Going hand-in-hand with knowing where you’re going, it’s also a good idea to calculate the amount of time you’ll be spending in the car. Don’t forget to calculate the stops you plan to take and consider where those will be.

Whether you’ll be doing a lot of sightseeing along the way or stopping at lots of rest stops, you’ll want to be properly dressed. Chances are for long periods of time, the more comfortable you’ll want to dress.

How Cute Do You Have To Be When You Get There?

I know I’m not the only one that has ever asked this question, that’s why I wanted to address it. There are a couple of ways to approach being cute upon arrival. Of course, it all depends on where you’re going, but overall, it’s a personal choice. After long hours in a car no one can expect to look completely cute. :)

If you’re going straight to your hotel room or beach rental at the end of the day, then perhaps lounge attire will do. However, if you’re rolling into town and immediately having dinner at a nice restaurant, you may want to consider a glow-up pit stop and outfit change before arriving at your final destination.

Start With Shoes And Build Up for Your Perfect Comfy Road Trip Outfit

Every gal knows it’s about the shoes. A complete outfit can change because of them, and that’s why I recommend starting with them in order to put together your cozy road trip outfits.

What Makes Comfy Travel Shoes?

When it comes to comfort and travel, think in terms of lightweight, not too tight, breathable, and easy to take on and off. Although you’ll be doing a lot of sitting and making occasional pit stops, you don’t want your feet to be uncomfortable at all.

If you’ll be tag-teaming the driving, I recommend a shoe that won’t get stuck under the pedal (like flip flops) or won’t make the driving uncomfortable overall.

In some instances, you may want to consider keeping a couple of pairs of shoes on hand: one pair for driving and the other for riding. And as I mentioned above, if you’re making any activity stops along the way you might want to pack a change of shoes in the back within easy reach.

Stylish Walking Sandals for Travel

Sandals can be quite comfy when traveling in the car. The plus side is they give your feet the ability to breathe and if you find your ideal pair, they’ll provide good support as well. There are many different types of sandals so it all depends on where you’re traveling to and what you’ll be doing.

Also keep in mind that some sandals might not be comfortable or safe to drive in, so as I said before you may want to keep a closed-toe slip-on shoe on hand if you’re driving and swap into your sandals when you’re the passenger.

Slip-ons are ideal because they are easy on the foot and… well, they slip-on . This makes it easier when traveling with family and having to get in and out of the car often. I’ve started making my girls wear slip-on shoes only when we’re on a road trip.

If you’re planning to travel when the weather is a little cooler you might want to wear some boots. But remember that you want to keep your footwear lightweight and comfortable for a long trip, ankle boots are a good option. Most hiking boots tie, but ankle boots are often pull on or have side zippers, making them easy to put on and take off.

Cute and Comfy Tennis Shoes

Of course, you can’t go wrong with a good tennis shoe for comfort, but depending on your car ride you may want to strongly consider another option. Oftentimes, tennis shoes/sneakers/runners can cause your feet to sweat and may not provide much comfort if your feet swell during your long travels.

With the various styles available today, you can get a pair of tennis shoes that don’t quite look like you’re headed to the gym, yet keep your feet comfy and supported. Tennis shoes with mesh are also a top pick because they allow your feet to breathe.

Keep in mind that if you want to take off your shoes during the drive, you’ll have to deal with re-tieing them at each stop if you don’t get a no-tie version. A few styles I love to wear on a road trip are:

What are the Best Pants for Traveling?

Now that we’ve talked about shoes, let’s talk about what to put on those legs.

Leggings and Jeggings: The Ultimate Road Trip Wear

Hands down, I believe leggings and jeggings are some of the best clothes for road trips. Why? For starters, they come in so many different colors and styles, it’s impossible to list and name them all. Secondly, they can be paired with anything. And lastly, I have yet to come across a pair that wasn’t comfortable.

It seems the biggest choices are between the color you want to wear and if it has some extras, such as the side pocket for your cell phone. And if you don’t like tight leggings, you can also find some looser yoga pants that are super comfortable.

My teenage daughter has gotten me hooked on aerie leggings . They’re super soft and don’t have a see-through fabric issue! Plus they make versions that have a phone pocket which can be super helpful when traveling. Of course, lululemon leggings are definitely considered the premium brand of leggings and look great on most body types.

Jeggings are also an option if you’re trying to avoid bulky jeans but still not look like you’re wearing leggings. You can find jeggings at most of your favorite stores like Old Navy , Target, and American Eagle.

Best Pants for Travel

One of my favorite things to wear on a long flight is outdoor pants. I really like these hiking pants from Columbia . But I’ve also found these pants from Prana to be ideal for travel! They both seem to be great adventure-ready clothes for stops along the way. They are so comfortable but also depending on the color and type of top you pair it with you can make them pass as cuter and a little dressier than leggings.

If you’re planning for a summer road trip, you might be tempted to wear shorts on your trip. A couple of words of caution about wearing shorts, 1) they can often bunch up on the seat and if you have leather seats you might stick to the seat which will be uncomfortable. 2) often you’ll want to keep the AC on in the car if it’s hot outside, so if you’re wearing shorts you may get cold. Of course, if you run hot then shorts are probably a great choice for you!

Should You Wear Pajamas for a Road Trip?

I vote a strong no on wearing pajamas for your next road trip simply because there are so many pajama-like outfits that would be just a comfortable, yet casual and cute. There’s also the times when you’ll be getting out of the car to check out something along your journey or stopping for a break. Chances are you’d be a lot more confident when you’re not wearing your PJ’s.

Instead, opt in for a cute loungewear set, or even just leggings, a tee, and a soft cardigan.

Cute, Comfy Travel Outfit Sets For A Road Trip

As an alternative to wearing your PJs on a road trip, wearing a cute yoga outfit or loungewear set can make for a super comfortable ride. And these days leisurewear seems to be making a comeback with even tracksuit sets available.

Keep in mind if you’re traveling when it’s hot you might want to make sure the material is comfortable and breathable. Rompers are also super cute and comfy, and they’re popular and easy to find. Just make sure they’re a pull-on/off style and not button-up. You don’t want to deal with buttons when you’re making a pit stop.

If you get cold or hot easily, you might want to look for organic cotton options for your clothing. It’s a sustainable material and great options for temperature regulation.

Comfy And Cute Road Trip T-Shirt Ideas

If you plan on going on a long road trip, you need to know what to pack and wear throughout the journey. It’s important to pack the right clothes for the different types of weather you’ll experience. Whether it’s raining, chilly, hot, or humid, you’ll have everything you need to feel your best on your road trip. T-shirts can be great for layering so you can pair them with a cozy cardigan or jacket.

Layering Clothes For Car Travel and Weather

You can’t go wrong with packing a few tank tops to wear. They’re perfect to have when traveling during the hot weather. Tank tops go with everything, including shorts, pants, and even skirts. No matter what you plan to wear on your legs, you can pair it with a tank top!

Cotton T’s

Keep it cozy and comfortable with cotton t-shirts. You’ll find a massive selection of cotton t-shirts at some of your favorite stores in lots of unique colors. Tees can be great for layering with a cardigan or sweatshirt.

Sweat Jackets

If it starts getting chilly, you’ll be glad that you packet a sweatshirt to wear. The great thing about a “sweat jacket” is that it can be zipped closed and you don’t have to deal with pulling it over your head. Most sweat jackets come with a hood attached, which is perfect for protecting your hair when it’s raining outside. Hoodies also work great for blocking out sound and light when you’re trying to sleep in the car!

When you’re wearing a tank top or t-shirt, you can easily pair it with a cardigan. The cardigan will keep you warm when it’s just a bit chilly. Just like sweatshirts and t-shirts, cardigans are available in many colors and styles. Cardigans are a great alternative to sweatshirts to help you look cute. They also pair well with travel dresses!

Outerwear for Long Car Rides

If you’re going on a long car ride with cold weather, don’t forget to add some outerwear to your winter packing list . You’ll want a warm coat, hat, and gloves. When you’re traveling where it’s sunny, don’t forget to pack a hat to help block sunlight from your face. You can also consider packing a rain jacket or denim jacket if you’re traveling during the spring or summer.

What Not To Wear on a Road Trip

When you’re going on a road trip, never wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. If it’s too tight or doesn’t fit right, leave it at home. If you don’t like the way jeans make you feel, don’t bring them. The goal is to pack items that are lightweight and comfortable to ensure that you feel great during your trip.

The main things I won’t wear on a road trip are jeans (unless it’s a very short car ride), shoes that tie, and any undergarments that are uncomfortable. Ladies, make sure you’re wearing your most comfortable bras when you’re heading out on a road trip!

For me, comfort is the #1 thing to keep in mind when planning what to wear on a road trip. No matter how long you’re spending in the car – you just can’t go wrong with comfy! Keep in mind all the tips I said above, find a great pair of shoes, pair it with some great pants, and then keep in mind layering when you’re planning your tops. New England: Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont

Start your journey in Maine at Acadia National Park , where you'll find 47,000 acres of wilderness, including hiking and biking trails. Then, head to Camden — the so-called "Jewel of the Maine Coast." Here, you can shop downtown, picnic at the beach, and see marvel at scenic lighthouses. Next up is Portland, where you'll want to check out the breweries, art galleries, and of course, more lighthouses. On this journey, you'll have the opportunity to explore the breathtaking White Mountain National Forest , Swift River, Sabbaday Falls, Lower Falls, and Rocky Gorge.

The Kanc, as it's affectionately known by locals, rises to an elevation of nearly 3,000 feet. Its highest point brings you to Kancamagus Pass on the flank of Mount Kancamagus near Lincoln, New Hampshire. Start your road trip in Conway and stop at the Saco Ranger Station just west of town to pick up a map and plan your points of interest. Key attractions include the Albany Covered Bridge, built in 1858, and picturesque Sabbaday Falls. The romantic route will end in Lincoln, where you can stay overnight at The Mountain Club on Loon , which is open year-round and perfect for ski season.

Historic Route 66: Chicago to Los Angeles

Stretching from Chicago to the end of the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, this 2,400-mile route is often called the "Mother Road" — a nickname coined by author John Steinbeck. The ultimate American road trip experience, this drive can be turned into a romantic week-long trip filled with fascinating stops along the way. Start your journey in Chicago , where you can share a deep-dish pizza and admire the masterpieces at the Art Institute of Chicago before heading to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to visit the Blue Dome District , a nine-block area with trendy eateries, pubs, boutiques, and nightlife venues. Another highlight here is the revitalized Blue Dome building, a former 1920s-era Gulf Oil station that occasionally hosts festivals.

Oregon’s Scenic Coast

While driving up Highway 101 along the Oregon coast, your first stop will be the picturesque Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor . Here, 12 miles of lush forest meets untouched beaches, massive jagged rocks, and blue water. Visit Arch Rock Picnic Area and Natural Bridges before stopping at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area . Stay overnight at Hallmark Resort in Newport, where rooms come with oceanfront balconies. The property also has a public path that leads directly to the beach.

Next, drive the Three Capes Scenic Loop and admire Haystack Rock, an impressive 235-foot sea stack formation on Cannon Beach. Then, visit Ecola State Park before holding a romantic bonfire at Cannon Beach. End your journey in the resort city of Seaside and enjoy its historic arcade, old-fashioned carousel, bumper cars, and indoor miniature golf. The Overseas Highway: Miami to the Florida Keys

The Overseas Highway from Miami to Key West offers a drive like no other. Suspended over water nearly the entire time, this 113-mile roadway crosses 42 bridges from Miami to the southernmost point of the U.S. (You'll be closer to Cuba than you are to Miami by the end of this road trip.) Romantic duos will first hit Key Largo, home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . You can enjoy a view of the reef from a glass-bottom boat tour or get a closer look by scuba diving or snorkeling at this underwater playground.

Next up is Marathon, where you can meet rescued and rehabilitated marine mammals at the Dolphin Research Center and explore the 1,000-acre Curry Hammock State Park . Then, you'll drive over the Seven Mile Bridge — the longest bridge in Florida — before arriving at Big Pine Key. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the elusive Key deer and spend the night at Little Palm Island Resort & Spa , just off Little Torch Key. Now, you're only around 45 minutes north of Key West, but you'll want to stop at Mangrove Mama's , a landmark restaurant on Sugarloaf Key serving fresh local seafood. End in Key West at Mallory Square, just in time for the romantic Sunset Celebration , a nightly event with live music, street performers, and local vendors.

Montana’s Glacier Country

Mountain biking, hiking, and some of the world's best skiing are just a few of the offerings in Big Sky Country. Begin your romantic road trip in Missoula, Montana's cultural hub and home to the University of Montana. Relax in the nearby natural hot springs or float down the river while sampling local craft beer with River City Brews Rafting Tours .

After that, drive up to Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, with over 200 square miles of water for sailing, fly-fishing, and waterskiing. For remarkable views of Flathead Lake, spend the night at Mountain Lake Lodge in Bigfork. Continue another 40 miles north to Whitefish, which offers prime hiking and skiing opportunities. You can also enjoy a coffee roasting tour at Montana Coffee Traders . Cap things off with a hike surrounded by majestic mountains and lakeside scenery in Glacier National Park .

Utah’s Scenic Byway 12

Scenic Byway 12 in Utah presents 120-plus miles of designated " All-American Road ." At its summit of 9,000 feet, you can appreciate sweeping vistas of the Henry Mountains, Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument , and the shimmering red rocks of Capitol Reef National Park . Begin your drive in Panguitch and explore the scenery of Red Canyon and Bryce Canyon National Park .

Next, take in the views at Kodachrome Basin State Park before spending a night at glamping destination Escalante Yurts. The stars in the light-pollution-free Utah sky are undeniably romantic. Make a point to visit the Escalante Petrified Forest State Park and grab an espresso and pastry at Kiva Koffeehouse . Before concluding your journey, spend an afternoon exploring Capitol Reef National Park.

Pacific Coast Highway: San Luis Obispo to San Francisco

Nothing says California dreamin' like seaside scenery combined with the tranquil atmosphere of Big Sur. Start in San Luis Obispo , heading up Highway 1 through the seaside town of Morro Bay . Watch sea otters at Morro Rock and stop for vegan and vegetarian fare at Shine Cafe or a latte at the dog-friendly Top Dog Coffee Bar .

Farther up the coast is Ragged Point, where you can catch a glimpse of the awe-inspiring Big Sur coastline. Spend the night at Ragged Point Inn and Resort and hike down Ragged Point Trail for unparalleled views of the sea and a hidden waterfall. Enjoy the atmosphere of this laidback, two-lane highway and make stops at McWay Falls and Pfeiffer Beach , where the sand sometimes turns purple after the rain. Leaving Big Sur, you'll hit Monterey County, where you can walk along Cannery Row in Monterey and check out Carmel's historic antique shops. Then, embark on the scenic 17-mile drive in Pebble Beach for more incredible coastal views. Is there anything as romantic as an epic road trip with the one you love by your side?

On a road trip, there are no “honey-do lists,” only bucket lists. And instead of stressing about getting it all done, you’ll be enjoying sunset picnics, secluded hot springs, and long stretches of back-road rambling. 

Road tripping as a couple is about overcoming obstacles, strengthening your relationship, and discovering the world together.

This means, that just about any stretch of beautiful highway will do, but there are some ingredients that make for more romantic road trips than others — Beautiful scenery. Opportunities for solitude. Great lodging and dining. Out-of-the-ordinary experiences.

Coastal Fun on Oregon Coast Highway 101

What could be more romantic than a coastal road trip with gorgeous views around every corner? The Pacific Coast in Oregon is known for its wild shoreline, gravity-defying cliffs, and quirky coastal towns.

There’s no shortage of tiny restaurants near the shore where you can sip a glass of wine as the sun sinks into the ocean.

Five days on the Oregon Coast Highway may convince you that it’s one of the most beautiful and romantic road trips in the entire world.

Covering about 340 miles, you can certainly cover this road trip in a weekend, but we’re proponents of slow travel, and five days gives you lots of time to explore while spending three to four hours in the car each day.

The trip begins on the northern border in the town of Astoria, where three rivers converge with the Pacific Ocean. From there, you’ll begin a leisurely drive southward, stopping at ocean overlooks, coastal hiking trails, and tiny surf shops.

Be sure to explore the galleries and boutiques in Manzanita, sample ice cream at Tillamook Creamery, and tour the Cape Meares Lighthouse.

Where to stay : So many choices! In Astoria, stay at Atomi c Motel for cute, affordable rooms in a great location. Heading south to Manzanita, the Inn at Manzanita is just a stone’s throw from the beach. The Landmark Inn in Florence is a seven-minute walk to shops and restaurants and just a short drive from Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

Best time to take this road trip: Summer or early fall would be ideal!

A Romantic Road Trip through Vermont and New Hampshire

You can’t get much more romantic than a road trip through the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire, where you’ll discover tidy villages, rugged mountain peaks, more craft beer than you can possibly drink, and creaky rocking chairs on the front porch of every general store.

The mountains in New England are ancient and forested, and the back roads lead to all kinds of surprises that haven’t even been discovered on Instagram yet.

We recommend five to seven days for this 460-mile loop that begins and ends in Portsmouth, one of New England’s oldest settlements. If you’re craving sea breezes or seafood, spend a few days in Portsmouth before driving north into the White Mountains.

One of the most enticing stretches of pavement on this New England journey is the 34-mile Kancamagus Highway that connects Conway and Lincoln, New Hampshire . This area is a wonderful jumping-off point for exploring waterfalls, trails, and picnic areas.

Next, drive through a beautiful stretch of rural Vermont (look out for moose!) and land in the mountain village and ski town of Stowe.

In Stowe, you can spend the day hiking, take the gondola to the top of Mount Mansfield at Stowe Mountain Resort , enjoy craft beer and a stellar meal at Idletyme Brewing , and spend a day exploring cute shops and gorgeous views.

From Stowe, drive south, stopping in Vermont’s capital city and spending at least a day in Woodstock, where you can explore Vermont’s only National Park and another adorable downtown. Grab a romantic dinner at the Prince & the Pauper.

Continue south to the vibrant arts community of Brattleboro, Vermont , before heading east and back into New Hampshire. If you have time, hike to the top of Mount Monadnock, the second most-hiked mountain in the world (after Mount Fuji).

Where to stay: In Portsmouth, we can’t say enough about the Water Street Inn . It’s within walking distance of downtown and beautiful. In Lincoln, New Hampshire, check out RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain . There’s a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, a spa, and an onsite winery. In Stowe, stay at Talta Lodge , where you’ll have your own outdoor seating area and access to the river and rec path. Finally, check out the Monadnock Inn near Jaffrey, New Hampshire, which is very close to Mount Monadnock.

Best time to take this road trip: October is phenomenal for fall foliage, but you will want to book lodging well in advance as it’s a busy time to visit.

Explore Coastal and Interior Maine

Maine is a big state, and while lots of people combine a Maine road trip with nearby New Hampshire and Vermont, we think it deserves a trip all its own.

Most people think of the rocky coast, lobster, and LL Bean when they think of Maine, but spend a day or two in the interior, which is gorgeous and wild, with lots of opportunities for solitude and romance.

This romantic Maine road trip is just shy of 560 miles, starting in the busy seaport of Portland and traveling up the coast to Acadia National Park and the tiny town of Lubec before heading inland to explore a few small towns. Give yourself a week to explore Maine on this beautiful road trip.

In Portland, meander around Old Port and the West End, stopping for a drink and dinner at one of the many waterfront cafes. Hike around the Portland Head Lighthouse at sunrise before heading north on Route 1.

They say that there is more coastline in Maine than any other state, and once you start driving, you’ll understand why – there are so many inlets and peninsulas jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, that you could spend a lifetime exploring them. 

Detour to the touristy Boothbay Harbor, Pemaquid Beach , and Camden Hills State Park before spending a few days in Acadia National Park .

The town of Lubec is the easternmost point in the United States. There are some nice hiking trails and beautiful views near the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse .

Interior Maine is a choose-your-own-adventure type of place, with secluded ponds and lakes, small farming communities, and tiny villages.

Rent a cottage in the Belgrade Lakes Region in the Kennebec Valley, a chain of seven lakes that are perfect for all kinds of water-based activities.

Where to stay: In Portland, check out The Westin, a hip hotel with a rooftop bar in a restored 1927 building. In Boothbay Harbor, splurge on a romantic stay at Tugboat Inn , a waterfront property within walking distance to downtown. There are many amazing spots to stay in Bar Harbor, but one of our favorites is Yellow House Inn , which has delightful rooms and an amazing breakfast. The Keeper’s Cottage in Lubec is near the West Quoddy Lighthouse and sleeps four.

Best time to take this road trip: Summer is gorgeous in Maine, but it also gets really crowded, so I suggest visiting between September and October so you can focus on your romantic road trip and not on traffic jams.

A Camping Road Trip on Highway 12 in Utah

It’s no secret that I adore Utah, and this route is one of the most beautifully romantic road trips around. Imagine long desert sunsets, secluded canyons, and endless acres of public lands.

If you are looking for one of the best road trips for couples — one that features awesome national parks, great camping, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, stop what you’re doing and plan a Highway 12 road trip through southern Utah.

This one-way road trip is 123 miles of the most stunningly beautiful scenery in the southwest. We’ve done this trip as a family and as a couple, and I imagine we’ll keep on exploring it for decades to come.

This route makes a lovely weekend getaway, but I’d also recommend spending several days in both Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Park, extending your trip to five days.

The trip begins in the town of Panguitch and travels through the Red Canyon before entering Bryce Canyon National Park . Pitch your tent at Sunset Campground, take in the hoodoo views, and hike some trails with the one you love.

Continue east and stop at Kiva Koffeehouse for pastries and caffeine. For a romantic night that doesn’t involve pitching a tent, book a night in Kiva Cottage . This is such a dreamy spot! We didn’t stay there, but we checked out the spot and the views just don’t stop!

Capitol Reef National Park is the most underrated of the five national parks in Utah. A historic orchard is open to the public for picking in late July, and you can score a fresh-baked cherry pie and homemade ice cream at the  Gifford Homestead   store.

Where to stay: Camp at Sunset Campground in Bryce Canyon , and book a night at Kiva Cottage if you can. If you want to spend time exploring Capitol Reef National Park, but don’t want to camp, consider  Capitol Reef Resort , which is close to the park entrance, features amazing views, and you can choose from a standard hotel room, a teepee, or a covered wagon for your lodging. There’s also a casual restaurant on site, an outdoor pool and hot tub, and a fitness center.

The best time to take this road trip: is April or October to beat the heat and the majority of crowds.

Wine and Waterfalls in the Finger Lakes

What happens when you combine five state parks, five wineries, and 50+ amazing Finger Lakes waterfalls into a five-day road trip? A kind of crazy, but oh-so-fun Finger Lakes vacation in Western New York — one of the most romantic road trips we can think of!

The Finger Lakes region is just four hours from Manhattan, but you might as well be on another planet. No other area east of the Mississippi can boast of more wine-sipping and gorge-hiking goodness than Western New York. Throw in more than 150 waterfalls and a few perfect spots to spend the night, and you’ll want to pack your bags before you finish reading.

This trip covers about 145 miles (depending on where you begin) in five days. Each day features a hike in the morning and wine tasting in the afternoon, followed by a night either camping or glamping (we provide a few hotel options as well).

Find Love on the Blue Ridge Parkway

The 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway has been called America’s favorite drive. Meandering through the mountains from Rockfish Gap, Virginia south to Cherokee, North Carolina, you’ll no doubt kindle a bit of romance on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and you may become a dedicated road-tripper if you aren’t one already.

As long as you pay attention to your mileposts, traveling on the Blue Ridge Parkway and finding attractions, hikes, and vistas is easy. The numbers start at 0 at the northern entrance in Waynesboro, Virginia, and end at milepost 469 in Cherokee, North Carolina at the southern entrance. There are plenty of places to get on and off the parkway along the way.

You may have already noticed that we’re fans of easy hikes, waterfalls, and camping, and you’ll find plenty of that stuff on your journey, but you’ll also discover cool historic sites, wineries, small towns, and lots of mountain music.

Give yourself five to seven days to drive the whole Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the best road trips for couples in the USA! If you have time, stay a few days in Roanoke, Virginia , which is one of our favorite small cities in America.

Needless to say, summer is the best season for a wild road trip.

But before planning your weekend road trip to the east coast, let’s not forget the weather can be too hot to handle even for the air con.

That’s why comfort is always the top priority when you pick your road trip ensemble.

If you want to cuddle up in the car for 3 straight hours at ease, a relaxed cut T-shirt dress work wonders for you.

To maximize the coziness, I will always switch out the denim shorts to the stretchy biker pants underneath.

For a high street ensemble, team a retro band T-shirt dress with chunky white sneakers just seal the deal.

Seriously, this is how you look effortlessly stylish in the simplest outfits!

2. GO FOR A LINEN SET FOR A CLASSY ROADTRIP LOOK

Can you look elegant on a road trip under the boiling sun? Well, the challenge is real but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible!

To make your dream true, you will need a classy linen co-ord set.

As a perfect mix of neutral hues and gorgeously lightweight fabric, it’s not hard to see why linen dress is so trending right now.

While most the road trip ensemble is more on the youthful side, a high-quality linen dress never fails to add a dash of sophistication and casualness at the same time.

After all, that can be kind of tiring if you wear a structured trench coat or heavy pea coat in the car isn’t it?

For my best picks, I must say the sherpa jackets are my all-time favorite.

For the girls who want to stay ultra-chic, teaming the off-white hoodie with a pastel shacket can totally steal the show.

9. WEAR BEANNIE FOR WINTER ROADTRIP

How to look cute on a road trip? Let’s wear beanie for a laid-back casual look.

As a girl with chubby cheeks, I love wearing beanie as it can add some height and elongate my face visually.

Teaming it with the classic flannel shirt and skinny jeans, is how you nail the random road trip look without giving a thought.

If you want to make your face look smaller, always choose the one with a big pom-pom for a nice selfie shot!

10. FOOTWEAR FOR SUMMER ROAD TRIP

Finally, it’s time to talk about footwear.

I know it’s so tempting to wear heels for some fabulous road trip photos that you saw on the Pinterest board, but let’s not do that. As we all know the formula, comfy shoes = happy trip.

Always was and always will be.

In general, the slip-on and flat sandals work perfectly when traveling in the car.

While the slip-on is convenient when we want to sleep in the car, the flat sandals give the feet more room to breathe.

Of course, for an off-duty style, flip-flops work as well.

But make sure when is the one who drives, switch the slippers to the closed-toe shoes for comfort and safety.

11. FOOTWEAR FOR WINTER ROAD TRIP

Wear Comfortable Shoes for Road Trip Outfits

Skip the heels and wedges for your road trip. Instead, opt for a pair of sneakers or sandals you can slip on and off easily. A classic white sneaker or black sandal will complete your cute road trip outfit. Plus, a chic slip-on pair will make exploring an area on-the-go super easy!

I prefer sneakers or sandals for road trips, but if you want a really polished and cute road trip outfit, try flats! This brand offers a huge selection of high quality, comfortable flats . They are 100% stylish. I own a pair and they feel like walking on clouds. Easy to get on and off!

Layer-Up for Road Trips

Last Summer we drove 12 hours from NE Ohio to the Outer Banks. It was a beautiful 12-hour drive, but we decided to stop at an Airbnb mid-way to let our 18-month-old stretch his legs and get good sleep over night. We explored the area, and I was so glad to have brought layers with me. Not only was our Airbnb a chilly basement apartment, but the evenings were also cool.

There will be a lot of climbing in the back for snacks hopping in and out of the car for rest stops. The last thing you need to worry about is ruining your designer pair of sunglasses!

Amazon has a ton of great designer look-a-like sunglasses for a great price! My sunglasses in the picture below were under $20 and look so much like designer glasses! I’ve seen a lot of other fashion bloggers wear these and they seem to be universally flattering for all face types! Such a great accessory for cute road trip outfits .

For the most comfy road trip outfits, only wear soft and super stretchy denim. I’m all about comfort when it comes to road trips – it just ain’t fun sitting in the car for long hours in tight jeans or knee-high boots.

Also, you want to make it easy to run out of the car and pee if you have to, ya know?

Okay, maybe you don’t know if you haven’t been on many road trips, but boy oh boy – when you need to pee, you need to pee.

Cute road trip outfits to wear

• Tee + denim shorts

Probably my go-to road trip outfit during the summer is a simple tee and denim shorts.

It’s just super easy to throw on, and it always looks good!

All about dat capsule wardrobe , y’all.

Definitely don’t wear denim shorts with a button fly and don’t wear ones that are too tight.

I also love keeping a plaid shirt tied around my waist ’cause it adds a little somethin’ somethin’, and it’s easy to throw on if it gets chilly.

What’s more comfy than not wearing pants?

A cute mini dress is another one of my go-to summer road trip outfits.

It’s especially nice on hot summer days to let your thighs breathe.

Throw on a cute straw hat to spice up your look for photos!

Maxi dresses are also super comfy to road trip in, especially if they’re loose and flowy.

It’s a terrible habit, but I love crossing my legs while in the front seat, and maxi dresses make it easy.

• Tank + leggings

Sometimes you just don’t want to wear an “actual” outfit, ya know?

If you’re doing hikes along the drive, it’s definitely the most comfy to throw on a tank or sports bra and leggings.

It doesn’t even have to be a boring outfit – go with a cute matching set and bam, you’re photo-ready!

• Matching workout set

I absolutely adore matching workout sets, especially if they’re bright and colourful.

It’s a super comfy outfit to wear on your road trips, and it’s especially great if you plan to do some hiking stops along the way!

• Denim on denim

As a Canadian, I love wearing denim on denim (AKA the Canadian tuxedo).

It’s a chic outfit you can wear to explore the city or make stops out in nature!

Just don’t wear tight jeans if you’re road trippin’ – unless you want to have your pants unbuttoned the entire car ride.

• Sweater + jeans

When visiting colder destinations, a comfy sweater and jeans is always my go-to outfit.

I usually pack multiple sweaters and wear the same jeans the entire trip!

You can even just wear the same sweater everyday ’cause you don’t really sweat much in colder places.

Chic & Comfy Road Trip Outfits [+9 Packing Tips!]

You know the feeling you get when you nail the assignment – when you pack perfectly, are comfy and chic on your road trip, when the 3 tops and 2 bottoms you brought somehow coordinate to make at least 16 outfits when you get that “ WoW ” look of appreciation (and dare I say jealousy) from your partner because they see you only brought a small bag for the week.

I’ve been a full-time digital nomad and traveling out of a carry-on suitcase & a small backpack for 4 years now , and I sometimes impress myself with the amount of shit I can get in my bag, as well as my strategy for what to leave behind. And dare I say, I still look cute on my road trips!

This may be my over-maximizing brain talking, but I get such a kick out of thinking what and how to pack, especially when it comes to comfy road trip outfits. I’ve been perfecting this strategy for over a decade , so here I am, sharing all my secrets!

9 Tips For Packing Comfy Road Trip Outfits

Here are my best-kept secrets to packing in only one carry-on bag!

1. Bring Comfy Shoes

Sneakers are your friend for those long hours on road trips. Some people prefer flip flops or those little ballet flats, but I find the most versatile is a nice, clean, white sneaker – mostly because I’ve appreciated closed-toe shoes for some questionable gas station or nature bathroom situations.

Oh and limit yourself to 2-3 pairs of shoes max – one sneaker, one nice option for going out, and one sandal option.

2. Get a Good Road Trip Bag

After owning a few small bags and many more backpacks, I’ve settled on my favorite Timbuk2 Wingman Backpack for a long weekend road trip. It makes a getaway easy; it’s super well-compartmentalized and has a clean design.

And because the carry-on has become the new backpack these days, my go-to is the AWAY carry on bag with the packing cubes ( the link gets you $20 off – a must! ).

3. Roll Everything

I fit loads of cute road trip outfits in my bag by rolling everything. It just makes more sense architecturally.

Oh! And don’t forget to stuff smaller things into your shoes – panties, gym clothes, bathing suit, socks, etc.

4. Pack Wrinkle-Free Clothes

To keep you looking stylish in photos, don’t bring fussy clothing that requires ironing.

This might mean you’ll have to leave your favorite organic cotton maxi dress behind – natural fibers tend to wrinkle faster.

5. Think Layers

I recommend packing a favorite graphic tee, tank tops, a light denim jacket, and a long sleeve sweater that can be layered to keep warm as needed.

Plus, layers lend to more outfit inspiration as you mix and match all the travel clothes.

6. Limit the Tight Stuff

Road trips mostly happen in a car, so leave the skinny jeans at home for maximum comfort.

When I say, “limit tight stuff”, I am NOT including black leggings in this category , as they are critical for those long drives and are a good option for any body type on long drives – plus they go with everything!

7. Neutrals + Splash of Color

For maximum mix-and-match options, pack different neutral colors (nudes, whites, blues, grays, blacks) but don’t be scared to include a couple of bold statement pieces or prints. There’s no need to be boring just because you’re going for a casual look on the road!

8. Don’t Forget Your Tech

This means chargers, headphones, a laptop (for when you need to watch that late-night movie), converters if you’re jumping countries or battery packs.

9. Go Lean on the Toiletries

Get a small makeup bag, and limit yourself to anything that fits – a must is a toothbrush, travel-size toothpaste and shampoo, hand sanitizer, chapstick, small sunscreen, wet wipes, and hand lotion.

I find if I limit myself to a small makeup bag ( and don’t cheat ), I am better at being lean on what I pack.

How can I look stylish when I’m traveling?

Before we get into the checklists and cute road trip outfits, I want you to really internalize that less is more for long road trips.

To that point, I personally lay out everything I want to take based on the checklist below, and then… I cut that in half. And the remaining half is what I take on the road. I know, it’s dramatic, but at the end of the day, this trick works.

Everyone has a strategy for long flights – from wearing your bulkiest outfit so you can fit more stuff in your carry-on to wearing your PJs for ultimate comfort.

I subscribe to neither of those camps, rather I like traveling light. This is why I recommend something similar to the comfy road trip outfit from above, with these additional DO’s and DONT’s in mind for flights:

❌  Don’t wear heels . Or shoes that are hard to take on/off during security checks.

✅ Do keep accessories to a minimum . This includes belts, watches, and jewelry that might ring an alarm – again if you want to pass through security fast, keep it simple.

✅ Do keep it organized. Make sure to have your toiletries bag and laptop handy and organized so you can remove these quickly for security checks.

Road trip themes are a good way to plan a vacation you won’t ever forget. You can always just hop in the car and see what happens. You might start driving and see a million beautiful sights or end up somewhere you never want to leave. Or you might start a road trip with a goal, a theme, an idea of the types of experiences you want. These road trip themes and ideas are perfect for hitting the road and having incredible experiences.

Planning a road trip with a theme is a great way to drive your itinerary and ensure you’re seeking out unusual opportunities. I find that when we travel with a theme it helps us enjoy trips more because we have built in conversations comparing the experience we’ve had along the way. And education? Yes! Themed trips with kids are amazing learning tools.

As you read on, remember that any of these themes can be morphed to fit your road trip crew. Don’t pigeonhole your travels into a narrow path, but use road trip themes to enrich the travel opportunities you take.

Ideas for Solo Travel Road Trip Themes

I’ve always loved solo road trips. I love my family and the adventures we have together, but man oh man, there’s nothing quite like the freedom of the open road and nobody else to worry about. 

Epic Photo Journey

I love the idea of hitting the road with just my camera and a basic plan. Doing an Epic Photo Journey road trip can happen nearly anywhere. On the West Coast (USA), heading across the mountains to the desert landscapes full of buttes and canyons is a surefire way to capture unbelievable contrast in your photography. The sunrises leave you speechless and the sunsets are full of color from the dust in the air.

If you’re more of a mountain goer, there are many routes across the Rockies , Cascades and Sierras that will wow you.  The joy of doing a solo road trip up in the mountains is that you can push your limits and venture onto ridgeline gravel roads and jackknife highways that you may not feel comfortable doing with others.

Are you a weather chaser? If you’re planning a solo road trip in the right season, you may have the opportunity to set up your camera and just wait for storms to roll by. Having the freedom of only your own schedule to worry about gives you the chance to sit, enjoy the earth and photograph whatever inspires you.

Hikes Nobody Else Will Do

Am I the only one that likes hikes that start with a ridiculous climb and have zero people along the trail? Or to put a kayak into the water and not have a scheduled return time? Solo road trips, whether for a day or a week, are my chance to do those hikes and paddles.

Make special hikes your theme for a road trip. You’ll need to plan and prep differently for a hiking themed trip over a beach itinerary, and you may need to get yourself in better shape before you do it, but it’s well worth the consideration. Places like Gatlinburg, TN and Denver, CO are great for adding awesome hikes to other planned road trip activities.

Historic Routes Road Trip Themes

Why are historic routes included in Solo Road Trips? Have you intentionally done an historic route with a significant other? Unless you’re both big history buffs or have the same level of patience, planning a road trip to follow an historic route can be a challenge. 

Of course, today there are lots more sights and activities along well known historic routes, but if you’re sticking to a theme and making all the stops and each historic marker or museum, it can wear on a person.

Having said that, pick an historic route and have a blast nerding out! I really love road trips through mining country . They provide beautiful scenery, lots of museums typically, rock hounding, and plenty of unique tours. The mountains of Georgia and Idaho are two really interesting, often overlooked road trip destinations.

Another historic theme is pioneer trails. While pioneer trails are mostly located in the west, they had to come from somewhere! The Oregon (MO -> OR) , Applegate (NV -> OR) , Mormon (IL -> UT) , and Pony Express trails cover diverse territory and offer different perspectives of history.

Finding ALL the Food Trucks

One of the greatest developments of the 21st century is the popularity of the food truck, and street food is a great road trip idea. They’re mobile, they embody unique cuisines, and they’re all over! Even our neighborhood here in Saint Augustine, Florida has its own food truck culture. Just our neighborhood. And it’s then part of a bigger food truck culture in the city, which in turn is also found to the north in Jacksonville and to the South in Daytona .

Florida doesn’t hold a monopoly on food truck towns. Texas, Washington , California , and Indiana are food truck paradise as well. So, how do you turn this into a road trip plan? Easy peasy.

Here’s how you make a food truck themed road trip:

• Choose a region with a few good sized towns or cities
• Research “food trucks in _____ (city name)” for each major stop
• Build your route allowing you at least two meals in each food truck hub city
• Mix interesting sights and cultural spots into the plan
• Hit the road and eat…

Did you ever think traveling with the idea of trying lots of different food trucks would be something you’d want to do? It’s such a great way to experience local cultures and support small businesses while you travel. Even on our road trip around Oahu , the best places to eat were the food trucks !

Road Trips for Couples on the Road: rekindling fun together

I think back to before we had kids sometimes and get a sense of nostalgia. I remember how we would go camping at a moment’s notice or would drive through the night to get someplace extra early. I also think back to road trips I would NEVER take the kids on, either for safety or ridiculousness. These suggested themes are fun and offer plenty of quiet time together (and you could make them kid friendly if you wanted).

Lighthouses and Sleepy Towns

The USA and Canada have so many lighthouses that putting together a road trip plan for them is very easy. Did you know that some of the most beautiful lighthouses in North America are actually located on the Great Lakes? That’s right, you can do a lighthouse road trip starting in Milwaukee and circle Lake Michigan.

And with lighthouses often come sleeping nautical towns, sometimes still bustling, but often still set back in the days of small boat fishing. There’s nothing quite as romantic and strolling the streets of a town you swear is the set of a Hallmark movie.

Another reason lighthouse road trips make for great couple adventures is for the lodging. Where you find lighthouses you also find bed and breakfasts . The Pacific Northwest, Great Lakes and Northeast regions all have a remarkable number of B&Bs in their nautical towns. They are a wonderful romantic option, and often have just enough quirkiness that you’ll find yourself laughing together over stories of doilies at your grandmother’s house when you were a kid.

Wine Country Exploration

I never met a wine country I didn’t love. Wine country road trips are wonderful for couples, both young and old, for a variety of reasons:

• Beautiful scenery
• Lots of outdoor activities
• Cute towns w/ unique accommodations
• Lots of wine

If you’re not into wine as a topic of interest or education, that’s okay. Visiting wineries is an opportunity to learn together and broaden your knowledge or palate. And if that doesn’t sound fun, then just know that there are amazing restaurants in nearly every wine region, so you can easily shift your road trip theme to become a culinary adventure.

PS:  you don’t have to travel to Napa, CA to do a wine country road trip. Did you know that wine grapes are grown in all 48 of the lower USA? And each province of Canada grows wine grapes too! And Mexico even has some wine regions. But if you did want to goes to Napa and Santa Rosa, there are some cool stops and awesome wine country glamping .

Suggested Destinations :  Yakima Valley / Tri Cities (WA) , Willamette Valley (OR), Ozark Highlands (MO), Loudon County / Northern Virginia (VA) , Upstate NY

Views that Inspire Romance

You’ve got a week on the road with your significant other. You can’t agree on a theme or what activities you both are interested in. But, you can agree that each day, you can find an Inspiration Point. You know, a place with a view so beautiful that you kind of just want to make out.

Okay, maybe that doesn’t sound ideal or sounds too much like “young love,” but it’s a great road trip theme! Planning a trip where you can end each day with a stunning view is easier than it sounds and it’s a great road trip theme. Where you’re hiking to a Mount Rainier vista or doing a jet boat through Hells Canyon , it’s an experience to share.

As you build your itinerary, make sure that each day includes an exceptional viewpoint. That could be a sunset hike (safety first, be prepared), starting your day watching the sun come up over a valley, lunch looking out over the ocean… There are many ways to enjoy beautiful views.

Besides making out, what’s the purpose in finding these views? I’m glad you asked. Enjoying a mutual view brings people together. Sure, there’s the moment everyone has to take a photo or something, but after that it’s just you two and the view. It’s a moment to be quiet and appreciate each other AND the adventure you’re on together.

The reason movie locations is a couples theme and not a family theme is simple: not enough kids care deeply about the movies of the 80s and 90s, which make for the best movie themed road trips. True, there are lots of movies kids enjoy and they very well might recognize locations, but this is a chance to, as a couple, lose yourselves in movie nostalgia.

The most obvious choice for doing a movie themed road trip is to head to Vancouver, BC aka Hollywood North. The whole area is basically a familiar movie set, from Jumaji to the Never-ending Story . Even the small towns surrounding Vancouver are frequent filming locations and have been for decades. Movie location road trip themes tend to take you to charming towns not too far from major cities.

The other obvious choice, and truly it’s a good one, is Las Vegas to Los Angeles. This road trip is fun with kids too. Even without researching filming sites the drive from the Las Vegas Strip to Hollywood Boulevard is full of iconic shots, and you don’t even have to wander far off course. And you can’t overlook road tripping through the South with all of its familiar sights.

Family Travel Road Trip Themes

My favorite thing about being a dad is getting to share travel with the kids. They love it, whether we’re flying or doing a road trip. We plan trips together and they get to help choose what adventures we have. Family road trips are so special, and truly are at the heart of countless childhood memories for so many. Family vacation destinations can range from nature to city breaks.

National Parks and Junior Rangers

Before I go any further, did you know that adults can complete Junior Ranger programs within National Parks ? And you even get to earn the badge! Now that you have that nugget of information, how excited are you to start planning a few National Park road trips ?!

While some National Parks have become extremely popular in recent years, there are still many that remain rather undiscovered. The most popular parks, like Yellowstone and Zion National Parks , are very well developed both outside the park and within the borders of the park. Parks like this are easy to add to a road trip plan because there are ample hotels to choose from, so camping is just an option versus being required.

Some other National Parks are more remote and aren’t built up the way older parks are. For example, Wrangle St Elias National Park in Alaska is NOT close to any major cities or major roadways, but the adventure of getting there is remarkable and then the nature is unmatched. Adding Wrangle St Elias to an Alaskan adventure ensures you see more of the state than Anchorage and the well developed corridor leading to Denali National Park.

Note :  there are many state parks and Bureau of Land Management sites that rival the views, hikes, and history of National Parks. When you’re planning your National Park road trip, DO NOT OVERLOOK THESE PLACES. 

As you start to research and plan, take into consideration the popularity of National Parks for family travel in terms of scheduling. When school lets out the crowds increase, as happens on weekends as well. It’ll still be fun, but not as calm and potentially less active wildlife.

Amusement Parks for Miles

One easy way to make an amusement park vacation more budget friendly is to drive there instead of flying. With the cost per person to travel being so much less, you’ll have more to spend on park tickets and experiences.

There are more amusement parks than just Disney Parks , and they are quite easy to add to the same trip plan. Also, if you’re not on one of the coasts, there are some pretty epic theme parks in the Midwest and Texas ( Texas National Parks are cool too !).

These clusters can be added to the same trips if you’re looking for non-stop park fun:

• Southern California:  Disneyland and California Adventure , Universal Studios Hollywood, Knott’s Berry Farm , Six Flags Magic Mountain, Legoland California
• Florida Fun:  Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure , Walt Disney World (four parks) , Busch Gardens ( Tampa ), Legoland Florida
• East Coast Parks: Six Flags Great Adventure (NJ), Hershey Park (PA) , Cedar Point and King’s Island (OH), loop back to Busch Gardens Williamsburg (VA)

Everyone has a different goal with family vacations, so if amusement parks are your thing go fot it! To ensure that nobody gets burned out or suffers from roller coaster fatigue, be sure to mix in some relaxation or other sorts of nature or culture into the trip.

Digging into History

Like with the Historic Route road trip themes discussed in the Solo Travel section, digging into history with kids can be a mixed bag. Some kids get so into it and others could care less. We’ve discovered some key things to make historic travel family friendly.

When you’re planning an historic trip, look for opportunities to take part in living history or reenactments. This is a great way to generate interest and give context to the history everyone is learning about. Depending on the age of the kids, sometimes you can even be involved in different historic activities.

Another way to approach a trip through history is by looking through the lens of current or recent history. While there may not be designated trails to follow, you can make requests in advance to visit the National or State Capitol buildings and, in some cases, even get to watch history be made on the floor of the senate or house.

Every family is different and will have a different take on how to plan a history themed trip, and it very well may not be for everyone. In any case, a little bit of research goes a long way and making a learning experience from family vacation is always a good idea.

Science and Dinosaurs

“Geology rocks!” That will forever be my favorite dad joke. And I use it everyday, even when we’re at home. North America has some really fascinating places to explore when it comes to geology. 

Yellowstone really does live up to the hype and yes, it really is a trip that you should plan with your family at some point. You’ve got 18 summers with kids, I’m sure that at least one of those could include a road trip to Wyoming . And Yellowstone National Park really is more than its incredible geology, and you can even plan to stay at the Old Faithful Inn RIGHT NEXT TO the geysers. The wildlife and seeing scientific methods at work with the reintroduction of wolves, being able to observe weather patterns in one afternoon, observing the water cycle through geysers… So much science, so little time!

Another incredible place to observe science is Central Florida. Most people think of Florida and being nothing but beaches and theme parks. And while those are elements of the Sunshine State, the true gems are the fresh water springs . Florida has over 1000 freshwater springs. Some are located in city parks or state parks, while others are on private property with camping all around them. Their consistent water temperatures are home to thousands of manatees in the winter months , and kayakers and alligators in the summer months.

If you’ve not noticed, there are lots of road trip themes that venture through Upstate New York. There is science to behold up in the Fingerlakes region with more than 50 significant waterfalls. From Watkins Glen State Park to High Falls in the middle of the city of Rochester , you can visit several waterfalls each day, hiking or strolling, observing erosion and wildlife with every step.

For one more really cool, really fun idea, consider a dinosaur themed road trip. Believe it or not there are quite a few places around the USA with quite the concentration of fossils. Utah and Montana come to mind to witness active dig sites, but did you know that Ohio and Oregon are known for their fossil deposits too? Even Los Angeles has an incredible active dig site DIRECTLY IN THE CITY.

Favorite Family Road Trip Theme Ever:  Epic Towering Trees

I can’t even count how many road trips we’ve done as a family, but I can tell you which was my favorite. We went with the theme of Epic Towering Trees in the Mountain National Parks . Living on the West Coast evergreens are all around. These include Douglas fir forests in Washington , pines in Oregon , and sequoias and redwoods in California .

We made the trek to Sequoia National Park in the late spring, expecting hot days and unforgettable hikes among the sequoias . What we experienced was an impromptu blizzard and unpassable trails. We waited it out though and got to enjoy the vibrant red sequoia trees against the fresh snow. In Kings Canyon National Park we had the same thing. Walking through fallen tree tunnels, tromping through slush while groves of trees, so epic that they all have names, towered above us.

We continued onto Yosemite National Park , which is well known for its sheer granite cliffs, but also for its own groves of sequoias. Visiting the trees and then seeking out our own quiet side of the park, in the Hetch Hetchy Valley , we enjoyed the best of both worlds: giant forests and raging waterfalls.

From there, we hit the coast. Just out of San Francisco we came to Muir Woods National Monument. Talk about epic trees! Wow, so epic it felt like we were on the forest moon of Endor. Wait, what? Yes, these forests were home to the Ewoks and were the filming location for Return of the Jedi . We mixed a  Star Wars movie theme into our tree theme. Genius, if I say so myself.

After some time exploring the Bay Area National Parks and trees, we continued up the coast , eventually landing in Redwoods National and State Parks . Too long in the mountains was wearing on us “coasties” so getting to the redwoods that basically grow from the beach up into the hills was refreshing.

Besides the incredible groves of trees and ample hiking opportunities, we found some picturesque small towns to explore. Bodega Bay , where they filmed The Birds , Eureka and its colorful Victorians and Fort Bragg with its beach culture made for an incredible finish to our trip. We got to visit lighthouses , eat our way up the California coast (FYI: mashed potato cones, instead of ice cream, with gravy are a thing).

We rounded out our Epic Towering Trees road trip with a stay in a log cabin chateau . At Oregon Caves National Monument , instead of having a National Park lodge like most other parks, it has a chateau built from roughly hewn logs. As if staying in the most rustic accommodations wasn’t enough, the Oregon Caves were right outside our door and were perfect for exploring with kids.

Can you see why this is my favorite family road trip we’ve ever done? Such a mix of sights and activities, and all of it on one itinerary. In retrospect, we could’ve broken this trip up into three separate adventures, but if you’re going to go epic, go really epic with the road trip.

Getting Kids Involved in Travel Planning

I actually get a lot of questions about having the kids help us plan our vacations and road trips. Yes, our boys (6 + 9 years old) have opinions and interests and it’s extremely important that we consider those when vacation planning (even when it means we’re taking beach trips all the tim e). The best road trips will no doubt have lots of points of interest, but some will be more exciting than others depending on your family. We’ve certainly had some great ones… and some duds.

If you’ve got kids, you have an opportunity to show them that you value their opinions and interests by getting them involved with planning a trip. We like to use travel books or multi page atlases to have the kids to browse through. We’ve done this for a few years now where each kid picks a trip or some sights they think would be the most interesting to them. As we schedule future travel, we incorporate their requests and sometimes even let them pick the destination outright.

Of course, as an adult you have to keep in mind things like budgets and your life calendar, but empowering kids to share what drives them and inspires their minds will launch incredible, meaningful road trips they’ll remember long into adulthood.

But first, what does “romantic” mean to you and your significant other? Think about this a bit as you scan the list of ideas below. Some will be spot on and others totally off. Obviously, pick what works for you on your couples road trip.

WARNING: Whenever you want to make something “romantic,” it can put a whole lot of pressure and expectations on you guys. This is the exact opposite of romantic. A better question might be, How do you two have fun together? What makes you laugh together? Aim to make a couples road trip FUN, and the romance will follow.

What Are Some Romantic Things To Do on a Long Drive?

1. make your car romantic..

You’re going to be spending a lot of time in your car, so make it a place you WANT to be romantic in. Clean it up. Add some cozy blankets and cushions for rest stops. Maybe string up some lights or get some lights that sync to your playlist. Find more ideas at How to Make a Car Romantic .

2. Bring along fun conversation starters.

Simple but useful couples road trip activities are conversation starters. Order a box of conversation cards for couples from Etsy, or print off these conversation starter printables . Both show questions that are actually fun and not super cheesy.

3. Pack a few games.

When looking for great couples road trip games as romantic things to do on a long drive, aim for something that actually sounds fun. Not everything needs to be “romantic” relationship focused! 4. Plan a few car dates.

A special snack or treat. Some type of activity. And agreement that it’s a date! It can be as simple as watching the sunrise from the comfort of your car while sipping your favorite coffee. 5. Take selfie breaks.

Something romantic to do on a long drive is to take plenty of selfies. Don’t just take the traditional smiling selfies (although these are great, too!). You’re bound to see odd, quirky things on your couples road trip. So, get out of the car and take those goofy selfies to capture the fun! 6. Take a few dance breaks.

7. Stop to meet the locals.

Local animals, I mean. One of the funniest moments when exploring Islay’s distillery tours was when we came across some cows and sheep grazing by the road. My husband makes a pretty good moo, but it was pretty hilarious when he got a moo back. And nuzzling a horse that came up to our window and chatting with the shaggy highland cows was pretty great, too.

8. Explore a few sideroads.

Highways just aren’t nearly as interesting as the sideroads. On a long couples road trip, you do have to be selective so you don’t add a ton of extra time to the already long drive. But with a bit of advance planning, you can take a few side treks to cute little villages or through pretty scenery.

9. Climb a tree.

Yup, you read that right. Climbing a tree together is such a fun and romantic thing to do on a long drive! Yes, it’s a bit silly and makes you feel like a kid again. And because of this, it’s a couples road trip activity that gets you laughing and helping each other, connecting physically and purposefully. Plus, climbing a tree together gives you a shared, elevated view. Perfect for a fun selfie.

10. Plan a few picnics.

Picnics are a classically romantic thing to do on a long drive, so plan a few of them. Ideally, do a little research beforehand to find some pretty lakes and waterfalls you might want to stop at anyway. Before you leave, pack a baguette and a cooler of cheeses, meats, antipasto and olives. Then, either top up your stash along the way at local delis, or pick up take-out and eat it in a pretty spot.

11. Bring along a hammock.

Even though long couples road trips typically mean you wanna get there , romantic things to do on a long drive include cuddle breaks. Combine your stop with a picnic or meal break at a pretty spot. And while you can cuddle in the backseat, a much better idea is to string up a double hammock overlooking a view!

12. Bring some fun snacks.

13. Plan some great stops.

Sure, you wanna just get there on a long couples road trip. BUT you also want to make fun memories! Do a little research before you leave and pick a few stops that look fun. This obviously depends on the road trip route you’re taking, but maybe it’s as simple as a quick stop at hot springs, a paddle-boat on the lake, or a short hike at a national park. A round of golf at an epic course or checking out a highly-rated museum. Pick a couples road trip activity unique to the area. (It’ll also give you something to talk about.)

14. Plan a few date nights.

When researching great places to stop, plan in a few places you can have fun date nights, too. Again, this obviously depends on fun things to do along your long drive. This might be a wine tour, sports game, festival or other big event. Maybe a hot air balloon ride, escape room, or indoor skydiving (unless you’re both up for the real thing!). 

15. Stop at local eateries.

Stopping at top-rated local restaurants and craft breweries on your long drive is a fun thing to do on a couples road trip. You need to eat anyway, so you might as well turn it into a couples road trip activity that gives you a taste of the areas you’re driving through. It’ll also create memories and conversations!

16. Stay at great local accommodations.

A fun and romantic thing to do on a long drive is to pick great accommodations along the way. And change it up, by embracing the area you’re stopping in. In a cute little town, go with a highly-rated bed and breakfast or boutique inn. When passing through a city or resort community, indulge in an elegant hotel or spa resort. And don’t forget cozy cabins or glamping at national parks. Changing it up again gives you awesome couples road trip memories and conversations.

17. Remember the simple things.

Among the most romantic things to do on a long drive are the same as those things we do when first in love! Hold hands. Open the door for each other. Talk (and listen!) to each other. Bite your tongue when they do something that bugs you. Let them choose the playlist or audiobook (or, if it’s truly awful, negotiate one you’ll both like!).

18. Pre-discuss what’s off-limits.

Before you leave, talk about what’s off-limits to head-off any serious annoyances. Maybe you each veto three albums the other can’t pick for your playlist. Or agree to what your default volume will be. If one person is a no-stop road tripper, negotiate a few quick stops per day and maybe a date-worthy event every few days. You need to stretch and fuel up anyway, so you might as well make the stop count!

19. Pre-discuss what you most want to do.

When my husband and I drove from London to Edinburgh , we each picked a main stop. Him: Sherwood Forest. Me: Oxford University. Neither of us rushed the other through their stop, and we were both happy!

20. Agree to a general budget.

A practical way to keep the fun and romance on a long couples road trip is to talk about the budget before you go. Get a sense of where each of you is at, so both of you can manage your expectations and negotiate where you’ll prioritize your spending. Do your best to meet in the middle, so you’re both comfortable. Comfortable = fun and romance.

21. Gift something for your couples road trip.

Something fun and romantic to do on a long drive is to build some anticipation! You can do this by giving your significant other a gift related to your trip. Maybe it’s something they’ll need for it, like a cozy car blanket or new backpack . Or, maybe you use a scratch-and-reveal card or gift box to share a couples road trip activity y12ou’re planning.

22. Count down to your trip.

Another way to make the lead-up to your couples road trip fun and special is a countdown. This could be as simple as a cute text every day during the week before you leave. Or a little love note tucked into their briefcase. Maybe a piece of a puzzle they build at the end to find out about that special romantic accommodation you booked along the way.

23. Plan some low-key backup activities.

No matter how thoughtful you are with finding fun and romantic things to do on your long drive, chances are you’ll have some down time. You’ll likely want some down time, without pressure to fill the time with “meaningful” couples road trip activities. Plan some low-key, low-pressure things to do, like a few audiobooks and podcasts you can alternate between, depending on your moods.

24. Choose comfy, cute road trip outfits.

A very practical thing to do to make a long drive romantic is to carefully pick road trip outfits that are both comfortable and cute. Choose undies and clothes you can comfortably sit in for hours, AND that you’ll feel great in when you stop for that picnic or round of golf. If you’re planning a more elaborate date one day, keep your backup outfit handy so you can easily and quickly change.

25. Get a GPS! 

My husband and I agree that our GPS saved our marriage on our UK road trip . Mobile phones can be fine for short local road trips where cell coverage is strong and reliable. But on a long drive with weak or unpredictable cell coverage and signage, getting a proper GPS is a very good idea (we love our Garmin GPS ). Another benefit is that it keeps your phone free for managing your playlist and for last-minute research on local stops. A GPS is also ideal for exploring those sideroads!

I’ve been taking road trips in the south for my entire life, crisscrossing across the southeast USA visiting cities, towns, national parks, beaches, marshes, and beyond.

And yet, even after all that time, there are still plenty of southern road trip routes on my wish list.

Ideally, take your southern road trip in the spring or fall.

While you can technically take all of these southern USA road trips year-round, the south’s notoriously brutal summer means that it’s best to avoid the months of June, July, and August if you can (unless you plan to spend most of your time on the beach, of course).

Winter, depending on the location, can be gray and rainy, but can also be a joyous time to visit cities, towns, and mountains that see far less tourism in the winter (but don’t underestimate the possibility of snow in the mountains, either: it may be the south, but the Smokies still get snow!).

If you’re renting a car, shop around.

The best company to rent a car from for your US south road trip will likely vary dramatically depending on where and when you’re traveling.

Sometimes large international carriers offer the best prices, sometimes local outfits. Sometimes one company has an excellent base price, but terrible rental requirements.

Read the rental requirements carefully.

Especially make sure you know how many miles you’ve been allotted (or ideally, if they’re unlimited), if you need to return the car empty or full of fuel, what to do if the car breaks down, and what damages you’re liable for in the event of an accident.

Don’t underestimate the south’s national parks!

The wide-open spaces and epic landscapes of the American West are often the typical images conjured up when imagining the USA’s national parks–but the south has plenty to offer, as well!

In fact, Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee is the most-visited national park in the country, and its gorgeous vistas and jaw-dropping waterfalls are well worth exploring.

Other southern national parks to consider adding to your road trip through the south include Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, Everglades National Park in South Florida, and Congaree National Park in South Carolina–just to name a few!

Make sure you pack the right gear.

From safety gear to snacks, a deep south road trip requires bringing the right tools along, whether you’re taking a short vacation, trying out van life, or something in between.

Don’t overextend yourself.

Exploring every nook and cranny of the US south is a project for a lifetime, not one trip!

As tempting as it is to add on additional driving to stop at just one more beach or small town, make sure that you leave enough time to thoroughly explore each destination rather than spending the entirety of your road trip driving from one spot to the next.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Scenic Byway

One of the best scenic coastal drives in the United States is the Gulf Coast Scenic Byway (US Highway 90 / Beach Boulevard) in  Coastal Mississippi , where for 11 glorious miles there is nothing between you and the soft sugar sand and Gulf of Mexico water.

The most awe-inspiring section of the Gulf Coast Scenic Byway is from Henderson Point Beach to the Port of Gulfport Mississippi.

Drive this portion, or this entire road trip, in either direction, but we suggest west to east because you are closer to the water.

Start this road trip after an overnight in Bay St Louis or New Orleans (55 miles away).

In Bay St Louis, fuel up at Mockingbird Cafe (try their pulled pork and grits) or Serious Bakery (superb chicken salad).

The coastal drive continues through Gulfport and into Biloxi.

Visit the new Mississippi Aquarium, stroll the Biloxi Beach Boardwalk, and eat at White Pillars or The Blind Tiger.

After crossing the Biloxi Bay Bridge, make time to explore the wonderful small town of Ocean Springs.

Stroll the gorgeous oak-lined Washington Avenue, stop at Walter Anderson Museum of Art, and eat at Vestige.

Highway 90 continues through Pascagoula (Jimmy Buffett’s birthplace) and into Mobile, Alabama, where you can turn around and complete this classic deep south road trip again.

Alabama Black Belt Road Trip

A road trip through the Black Belt region of Alabama is one of the best southern USA road trips around.

Named for the dark fertile soil of the region, the Alabama Black Belt is made up of twenty-three states across central and south Alabama.

This part of Alabama is the place where significant law-changing history was made, where literary giants were born, and is home to some of the best food that can be found in the United States.

For first-time visitors or someone flying in, there’s no better way to start an Alabama southern road trip than by including the capital –  Montgomery.

Plan on visiting important civil rights sites and the renowned Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice.

Next, drive west approximately fifty miles to Selma, Alabama on Highway 80.

This route is the same route as the important Selma to Montgomery march for voters’ rights that took place in 1965.

Walk the Edmund Pettus Bridge, eat locally caught catfish, and sleep in a hotel that was built in 1837 .

They both grew up in Monroeville, Alabama – the next stop on this southern road trip. Take a walk around the charming downtown square to spot murals that pay tribute to these well-known books and authors.

From Monroeville, it’s easy to hop on Interstate-65 north to return to Montgomery or take the scenic route for a few more towns and sites on your southern road trip.

One of the fabulous road trips in the southeastern USA travels along the historic coastal corridors of Georgia to South Carolina, finishing in Charleston.

From the Georgia border to Florida, the major artery is Hwy 95, you’ll pass through so many historic and recreational sites along the way to make this a few days or even a longer visit depending on how many places you want to see and experience.

Some of the cool and historic places to visit in Georgia include St. Marys and Cumberland Island, Brunswich and St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island , Tybee Island , and Savannah .

Places to explore around South Carolina’s southern coastline from Savannah include Hilton Head, Beaufort, Edisto Island, and Charleston.

Each of these areas caters to historic sites or recreation getaways that are fun to explore when you have more time to visit each area on this road trip.

Even though you can go directly on Hwy 95 from the Georgia border all the way to South Carolina, it’s the small detour expressways and backcountry roads that will give you a better insight into visiting some of these gems in the region.

The Classic Blue Ridge Parkway Road Trip Route

The Blue Ridge Parkway, which stretches 469 miles from Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, is such an unimaginably epic USA road trip, that veterans almost envy people who are experiencing it for the first time.

There are a lot of reasons it’s the #1 most visited unit in the US National Park system (with more than 15 million annual visitors), including 200 jaw-dropping BRP overlooks that offer stunning Blue Ridge Mountain vistas and provide access to the region’s most incredible hiking trails, landmarks, mountain towns, and waterfalls.

Designed as part of FDR’s New Deal to protect American wilderness and provide jobs in the wake of the Great Depression, construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began back in 1935.

Most of the scenic route was completed by 1966, but the popular 8-mile stretch around the iconic Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina (including the engineering marvel known as the Linn Cove Viaduct) wasn’t finished until 1987.

The BRP is the longest linear park in the country, taking travelers through the Jefferson, George Washington, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forests.

So naturally, there are a lot of exciting things to do along the way. 

At 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River, with lots of challenging hiking trails and a relatively easy paved path to the observation platform at the summit.

Grandfather Mountain State Park is also home to epic hiking trails (including several with ladders to climb massive boulders), and the neighboring Grandfather Mountain attraction is home to the Mile-High Swinging Bridge, a small zoo featuring native North Carolina animals, and myriad picnic areas. 

Virginia’s Mabry Mill is the most photographed spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and one of the region’s many historical attractions.

There’s very little commercial development along the Parkway, with only a few hotels and resorts (including the historic Switzerland Inn in  Little Switzerland NC ,  and the Peaks of Otter Lodge in Bedford VA).

But part of the fun is exploring some of the charming little mountain towns along the way, including Cherokee, Blowing Rock, and Boone in NC, and Bedford, Lexington, and Waynesboro in VA.

You could drive the entire Blue Ridge Parkway in as little as 15-16 hours if you wanted, but that would totally defeat the purpose.

Some people like to break it up into weekend getaways, basing themselves in a local town.

But you could also spend a week or two driving the entire route, spending nights in lots of little towns along the way.

Chattanooga, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina

Once you reach Cherokee, explore the Oconaluftee Indian Village and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian.  Shop for some authentic Cherokee arts and crafts.

The drive from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina is 191 miles and takes 3 hrs 51 minutes if driving straight through. 

Since there is so much to do on this southern USA road trip, you will want to spend at least 5 days here in order to take in as much as you can along the way.

NOLA to Nashville Southern Road Trip Itinerary

And since Hilton Head is only 45-minutes from Savannah, you can stick around for a few hours in the morning and to Tybee Island before heading over to Hilton Head!

Hilton Head Island in South Carolina is a laid-back resort town offering beautiful beaches and tons of golf courses.

Additionally, Hilton Head is incredibly bike-friendly.

Head over to Hilton Head Outfitters, rent bicycles for the whole family, and go exploring!

And if you are a seafood lover, you’ll have tons of waterfront restaurant options!

A road trip from Virginia Beach, VA to  Hilton Head, SC  via Interstate-95 is approximately 589 miles.

If you do not want to stay overnight in Savannah, you can make the trip in seven and a half hours.

However, if you prefer slow travel and wish to explore Savannah, you should consider making this a two-day drive.

Gulf Coast Beach Road Trip from Alabama to Florida

If you have never heard of Dauphin Island, Alabama, it is a must-visit southern destination.

Take the ultimate beach road trip from Dauphin Island, Alabama, to Pensacola, Florida!

Dauphin Island, Alabama, is a beautiful place to visit. The island is home to many different wildlife species, including sea turtles, and the scenery is simply stunning.

If you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy nature, Dauphin Island is the perfect spot. Plan to stay at least two days.

From Dauphin Island, take the ferry across Mobile Bay to Fort Morgan, where visitors can continue the road trip to Gulf Shores.

Be sure to visit Gulf State Park and enjoy the incredible beaches from Gulf Shores to Orange Beach! Plan at least two days in Gulf Shores.

Gulf Islands National Seashore in Fort Pickens is a popular tourist destination offering a variety of activities such as catching some sun on beaches, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and exploring the historic fort.

Savannah, Georgia to Clearwater, Florida Road Trip

If you’re looking for beautiful beaches and fun in the sun, plan a short southern road trip route from Savannah to Clearwater.

Plan to start at dawn from Savannah on a Saturday so you can arrive by noon in  Clearwater, Florida .

Google Maps or Waze will offer you the choice of traveling down I-95 toward Orlando and then across to Tampa/St. Pete outposts.

Alternatively, you can drive through Jacksonville and then cut across the state via US-301 S and I-75 S.

The estimated time is 6 hours if you don’t hit bad traffic on I-95.

You will also have time to eat fried grouper at Clearwater Beach for lunch, then hit the Clearwater Aquarium for an afternoon adventure.

Dedicate the evening to drinking margaritas and watching the sunset.

You might want to watch the sunset (while sipping a cocktail) at Pier 60 on Saturday night or delay until Sunday because you will be exhausted from your early morning drive.

Clearwater is also a great place to settle while you plan day trips to Tampa, St. Pete, and Sarasota.

While you can easily make the drive in a day, it’s best to set aside a week for this US south road trip as you will lose two days to travel.

Florida’s Gulf Coast deserves a minimum five-day stay so you can experience different beaches.

Southeast USA Road Trip from Washington DC to Florida

One of the best road trips in the southeast US is from Washington, DC to  Anna Maria Island, Florida . 

If you want to break it up with overnights and stops, I recommend going from Washington DC to Raleigh, NC on Day 1.  On Day 2, drive from Raleigh, NC to Savannah, GA.  Then on Day 3, drive from Savannah, GA to Anna Maria Island, FL.

Starting in Washington, DC, where there is much to see from the Capitol to the Washington Monument to the Smithsonian Museums, you can begin heading on the road toward Virginia and the Carolinas. 

In Virginia, the historic college town of Williamsburg is well worth a visit. 

In addition to being a beautiful town, home to William and Mary College, it is also where you can step back in time at Colonial Williamsburg and learn a bit about American history. 

From here, head into North Carolina and stop in Raleigh if you plan to spend the night.

Then head into South Carolina, where a drive-through or stop in Charleston is a great thing to do. 

The historic and lavish architecture is well worth a look, and the southern hospitality and walk on the waterfront are worth it even just for a short visit. 

From here, continue into Georgia, where a stop in Savannah is a must. 

If you have a bit of time to spend in this southern city, the hop on hop off trolley, walking tours, and a 90-minute riverboat sightseeing cruise would be worth doing. 

This beautiful and historic city really is a gem on this road trip, so be sure to build in a bit of time, and even book a bed and breakfast for the night.  

Continue on from Georgia into northern Florida, where if you can stop in Jacksonville for a visit to the University of Florida or in St. Augustine for lunch or a walking tour of this beautiful and historic city. 

There is an old town part of St. Augustine well worth visiting, and depending on the time of day, is a great stop for a lunch. Continue on from St. Augustine to Anna Maria Island, Florida.

You may pass through Orlando and Tampa, which if you have time, may want to stop in one of these cities. 

While Orlando is home to many theme parks and activities, you won’t have time on this drive to do many of those unless you build in another day or two to your drive.

Instead, I suggest stopping in Tampa, where you will get to view this fantastic seaside city, where you can enjoy a cruise, walk around Ybor City, or grab a meal at the famous (and delicious) Columbia Restaurant. 

While you are also right at Clearwater Beach, you may want to save that beach visit for Anna Maria Island, just about an hours drive from Tampa, on the Gulf Coast, and renowned for its teal Caribbean-like water, white soft sand, quieter beaches, and home rentals perfect for a beach getaway. 

It’s the perfect destination to such a cultural and historic road trip, and one of the best road trips in the south USA.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina Road Trip

One of the best Southern USA road trips is driving through the Outer Banks. There are so many fun things to do in the Outer Banks  and its sweeping coastal scenery is gorgeous.

The Outer Banks is a chain of barrier islands off the North Carolina coast filled with beautiful beaches, lighthouses, and fun beach towns.

A great historic stop in the Outer Banks is at the Wright Brothers National Memorial.

This is where the Wright brothers completed the first controlled flight in December of 1903.

There are a fun visitor’s center, some historical markers, and a replica of the first plane.

The Outer Banks is also home to the tallest brick lighthouse in the world. You can climb to the top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. There are 257 steps to the top.

The lighthouse and Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a great place to spend the afternoon. The beaches are beautiful and not crowded.

After spending time at Cape Hatteras, you can take the ferry over to Ocracoke Island.

There is another lighthouse on this smaller island, but it is not open to visitors.

There are, however, beautiful beaches making this island a fun spot to explore.

The distance from the northern town of Corolla through Hatteras, the southern point, is about 95 miles.

If you continue to the ferry to Ocracoke, the mileage is longer.

You can easily fill 4-5 days with fun activities during your Outer Banks road trip, and spend even more time in the area if you want to relax on the beach.

Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park

One of the best road trips in the southern US winds through Shenandoah National Park offering stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

If you drive Skyline Drive straight through it only takes a little under 3 hours but there are so many hikes, overlooks, and small towns to stop and explore. This is the perfect road trip for outdoorsy people.

You can start at the Front Royal Entrance Station and on your first day hike to Compton Peak where you’ll find a gorgeous view as well as unique geological formations that resemble the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland .

In the afternoon, head out to the town of Luray where you can shop in the boutiques along Main Street and visit the famous Luray Caverns.

If you like to camp then stay the night in Mathews Arm Campground, otherwise rent a room at the Skyland Resort inside the park.

For day two you can fit in two hikes – Stony Man and Hawksbill – which both offer stunning mountain views and are 2 of the best hikes in Shenandoah .

Have lunch at Big Meadows and make sure you get the blackberry ice cream pie for dessert!

In the afternoon you can hike Dark Hollow Falls or just head into Elkton or Sperryville.

Visit Sperryville for wineries and Elkton for breweries. Tonight stay at the Lewis Mountain Cabins & Campground.

On the last day of the road trip, hike Doyles River Falls and Blackrock Summit.

Stop for lunch at Blue Mountain Brewery and check out some of the other Waynesboro breweries. Main Street in Waynesboro is also very quaint.

For many people, 3 days is enough to spend in Shenandoah National Park.

However, if you are very outdoorsy and love to hike and explore small towns then you can spend a week in the Shenandoah Valley.

Northwest Arkansas Road Trip Loop

Arkansas is an underrated state with a lot to offer for outdoor adventurers!

The state has beautiful state parks, incredible mountain biking trails, a uniquely historic national park, and much more.

The northwest portion of Arkansas is where you’ll find the most beautiful natural areas along with some fantastic cities. 

This road trip begins in Bentonville, a city known for mountain biking, modern art, and as the Walmart headquarters.

There are miles of mountain biking trails in parks around the city and trails range from beginner to advanced. 

Continue on from Bentonville to Buffalo National River, a beautiful river with epic canyon walls towering above it.

After the National River, enjoy hiking in the Ozark National Forest (the most famous hike is Whitaker Point) and take in the views at Mount Magazine and Mount Nebo. Mount Magazine is the highest point in the state. 

Be sure to not miss the most iconic state park in Arkansas: Petit Jean. This state park is a favorite of many and is home to a 95-foot waterfall, caves, and several unique rock formations. 

Spend some time in Little Rock for great food and interesting history. 

Things to do in Little Rock include visiting the Little Rock Central High School Museum, exploring the vibrant SOMA neighborhood, and hiking at Pinnacle Mountain. 

Finally, end your road trip with a visit to Arkansas’ only national park: Hot Springs.

Hot Springs National Park was a resort destination in the early 1900s and there are a couple of bathhouses still in operation today.

In addition to the spas, you can visit a brewery inside of a bathhouse and enjoy the views from the observation tower. 

A week is the minimum amount of time you’ll want to fully explore the cities and hiking destinations along the way.

Ideally, take 10 days or more to take your time and enjoy this underrated southern USA road trip itinerary.

Florida’s Southwest Gulf Coast Road Trip

If you’re looking for an ideal year-round  road trip destination, Florida’s Gulf Coast  offers dreamy beaches, fantastic food, and some of America’s most (in)famous history!

Begin your road trip in Tampa, where you can spend 2 days exploring the city’s Cuban history in Ybor City and enjoy the amazing cuisine before heading south to Sarasota and Siesta Key.

Spend the next day in Sarasota admiring the mid-century architecture and visiting the Ringling Museum.

Shoppers will no doubt stay longer on St. Armand’s Circle, then head to Siesta Key later in the day to take in the new age vibes of the nightly drumming circle on the beach at sunset.

The next day, drive south to Casperson Beach in Venice and rent a “Florida snow shovel” for a few dollars to dig in the sand for prehistoric megalodon shark teeth.

Millions of them wash ashore every day and you just might find a big one to treasure!

Spend the night at Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island, one of Southwest Florida’s most historic towns before heading out the next morning for Fort Myers.

Situated where the Caloosahatchee River meets the Gulf of Mexico, the city of Fort Myers is worth a few days to explore the history and the beautiful beaches on Sanibel and Captiva.

Visit the summer homes of neighbors Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, whose mansions are popular tourist attractions today.

The last stop on your road trip is Naples and Marco Island on the southwestern coast. This stunning region is known as the Paradise Coast and it’s easy to see why.

Spend your days on the soft white sand beaches, shopping at the luxury stores and dining downtown, or get out into the Everglades for some adventure.

It is 180 miles from Tampa to Marco Island.

Virginia’s Eastern Shore Drive: Chincoteague to Cape Charles

There’s so much to love about  Virginia’s Eastern Shore .

Roll down the windows and breathe in the salt-infused air as you make the 70-mile drive north to south from Chincoteague to Cape Charles.

Get ready to make stops for sandy beaches, ice cream shops, and verdant wetlands just right for a scenic paddle.

Start at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to miles of stroller-friendly hiking and biking trails.

The Chincoteague Lighthouse Trail is a must-visit to ogle the red-and-white striped Assateague Lighthouse.

Take a guided kayak tour or nature cruise across pristine coastal waterways with Assateague Explorer.

Keep your eyes open for wild ponies, as well as native wildlife, like sandhill cranes and eastern mud turtles, that call the wildlife refuge home.

Order up a scoop of Mint Chip or Pony Tracks at Island Creamery.

Spend the night at the Refuge Inn, a mainstay in Chincoteague since 1973. Chincoteague is also home to several camping resorts, including KOA and Jellystone Park.

Continue on to Onancock, a historic waterfront town.

Start your day with a delicious breakfast sandwich at Janet’s Café before strolling the hamlet’s tree-lined streets that wow with Victorian-style homes.

Take a tour of Ker Place, a historic Federal-style home.

On the south end of Virginia’s Eastern Shore is Cape Charles, which is home to gentle beaches and vibrantly-colored sunsets.

Spend the day on the beach at Kiptopeke State Park, then order hush puppies at The Shanty.

Cap off the day with a scoop at Brown Dog Ice Cream and settle in at the Sunset Beach Hotel on the Chesapeake Bay.

This trip is best enjoyed over at least 3 days, including one day in Chincoteague, one day in Onancock, and one day in Cape Charles.

The family road trip has made a comeback and with it, families are looking for even more road trip ideas. While plenty of East Coasters have made the road trip down 95 to Florida over the years, now families want to take time to stop and explore along the way. With so much to see, we have divided this part of the country up into 20 different East Coast road trips, each of which could be done in a one-week vacation.

Each of these mini East Coast road trip itineraries will give you ideas for new ways to explore sections of the East Coast of the U.S.A. Check off one at a time or string a few together for a longer vacation.

20 East Coast Road Trips

Each of these East Coast road trip ideas should take approximately 7 to 10 days to complete as outlined. My goal is to only require one week of vacation time from work, since that is the typical family vacation. I’ve linked to some more detailed road trip itineraries and included maps to give you an overview of the route.

New England Coast: Boston to Bar Harbor, ME

The drive from Boston, Massachusetts up to Bar Harbor, Maine can be done in about four hours on the highway, but it is better to take the scenic route and explore Vacationland’s scenic coast along the way. One of the best East Coast road trips, this one is full of Maine foods like lobster rolls, blueberry soda, and whoopie pies; as well as lighthouses, rocky coasts, quaint small towns, and Acadia National Park .

Portland: spend 2 nights in Portland exploring the Old Port, maybe taking a lobster boat tour, climbing on the rocks by Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, or spending a day shopping at the L.L. Bean outlet up in Freeport. You could also visit some local breweries or take a day trip to Maine Wildlife Park in Gray to see some moose.

Where to stay: The Press Hotel , Inn by the Sea , or the Courtyard Marriott Waterfront

Boothbay Harbor: spend 1-2 nights in Boothbay Harbor . On your way, stop and enjoy the coastal towns, Giant’s Stairs in Harpswell, spend an afternoon soaking up the sun on Popham Beach, a rare sandy stretch of sand, and be sure to line up for lobster rolls at Red Eats.

The next day, get out on the water with one of Boothbay Harbor’s many sightseeing cruises to see puffins or whales, or rent a sea kayak to explore Muscongus Bay. Leave time to browse at the many boutiques in town.

Rockland: spend 1 night enjoying the artistic town of Rockland . Pop into the Center for Maine Contemporary Art or the Farnsworth Art Museum. If the outdoors holds more appeal, hop aboard a traditional Maine Windjammer for a short sail, walk along the Rockland Breakwater, or explore the trails at Camden Hills State Park. This arts city of Maine is such a delightful surprise!

Where to stay: 250 Main Hotel

Bar Harbor: finish up your road trip at the scenic town of Bar Harbor, just outside of Acadia National Park . You will want to spend 2 to 3 nights exploring the park. Try to catch a sunrise or sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain, drive the Park Loop Road, relax on Sand Beach, stop to see the natural phenomenon at Thunder Hole, take in the view from Otter Cliffs, bike the Carriage Roads, and check out some of the popular hikes. Don’t forget to enjoy an authentic lobster pound before you take the fast route back to Portland. (See more things to do near Acadia National Park .)

White & Green Mountains: Boston, MA to Burlington, VT

The drive from Boston to Burlington takes only about 4 hours, but use this New England road trip to spend time enjoying the beautiful scenery of the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Green Mountains of Vermont along the way, especially during fall foliage season.

Boston: if you haven’t been to Boston , plan on spending 2 nights enjoying this historic city. Don’t miss the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum , walk the Freedom Trail, enjoy a swan boat tour in Boston’s Public Garden, and taste your way through Boston’s Little Italy in the North End.

Where to stay: Fairmont Copley Plaza , Boston Harbor Hotel

Lincoln, NH: Lincoln can make a nice home base for 1-2 nights of exploring the White Mountains . Hike through the Flume Gorge, zip line, or hike at Loon Mountain, ride the Mount Washington Cog Railway, or drive the Mount Washington Auto Road. There are also plenty of hikes to try, rock climbing, a scenic drive on the Kancamagus Highway , and splashing in the waterfalls at Diana’s Baths.

Where to stay: Riverwalk Resort at Loon Mountain , Lumen Nature Retreat , Alpine Garden Glamping , or Huttopia

Stowe, VT: spend a couple of nights enjoying the Green Mountains from a home base in Stowe. On your drive from New Hampshire, you may want to stop at the Cabot cheese factory, Ben & Jerry’s Factory, and the Cold Hollow Cider Mill. In Stowe, you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and other resort activities.

Burlington, VT: Finish your road trip with a night in the hip waterfront city of Burlington. There are so many things to do in Burlington, VT and you can check out nearby Shelburne Farm, and the ECHO museum. Or if you prefer lake life, finish with a few days on Lake Champlain at the Basin Harbor Hotel .

On your drive back to Boston, be sure to stop and stroll through the charming downtown of Woodstock.

Southern New England COast: New York, NY to Provincetown, MA

You should be able to make the trip from New York to Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod in 5 to 6 hours, but the traffic can be horrendous on summer weekends so try to travel midweek for this east coast road trip if you can.

Mystic, CT: Break up the trip with a night in Mystic. You will want to visit the historic Mystic Seaport, stroll through downtown, and maybe stop in at the Mystic Aquarium. You will find plenty of things to do in Mystic with kids.

Where to stay: Mystic KOA , Inn at Mystic

Newport, RI: spend a night in the yachting capital of the world . You can walk the Cliff Walk, fly a kite at Brenton Point State Park, visit some of the Newport Mansions, shop along Thames, and take a sail in the harbor.

Where to stay: Newport Marriott , The Vanderbilt

Providence, RI: instead of skipping over Rhode Island’s Creative Capital, spend a night to discover this little gem. Take a Rhode Island food tour, visit the RISD Museum, take a gondola or river boat ride, bike along the East Bay bike path, and, if you are lucky, take in Providence’s famous Waterfire .

Where to stay: The Graduate Providence , Aloft Providence Downtown

Falmouth, MA: stay the next 2 nights on the elbow of Cape Cod in Falmouth. Take time to relax on the beach and then hop the ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket for a day. You can also ride the Cape Cod bike trail or visit the Woods Hole Science Aquarium.

Where to stay: Sea Crest Beach Hotel or Autocamp Cape Cod

Provincetown, MA: finish your road trip with a couple of nights in the unique and vibrant town of Provincetown. You can shop, dine, take a tour of the sand dunes , go on a whale-watching tour, climb the lighthouse, or visit the Pirate Museum. The best part is searching the tide pools at low tide and watching the sunset.

New York to Niagara Falls, NY

The drive from New York City to Niagara Falls can take 6 to 7 hours, but turn it into a road trip with a few days in the Finger Lakes region on the way and plenty of stops along the Western New York Upstate Eats Trail .

Watkins Glen: spend 2 nights in Watkins Glen, at the southern point of Seneca Lake. For fans of The Office, you may want to stop in Scranton, PA on your way for a self-driving tour of filming spots. Enjoy time on the lake, hike to the waterfalls in Watkins Glen State Park, or take a glider ride in Elmira, the Soaring Capital of the World.

Hammondsport: move over to Keuka Lake and spend a couple of nights in Hammondsport. You can enjoy water sports, wine tasting, and a day at the fascinating Corning Museum of Glass.

Niagara Falls: you will want to spend 2 to 3 nights in Niagara to explore all the attractions including the Cave of the Winds, Maid of the Mist, Old Fort Niagara, jet boat tours, and hiking trails in Niagara Falls State Park.

Where to stay: Sheraton Niagara Falls , Hyatt Place Niagara Falls

Buffalo: on your return to New York, stop in for some food, history, and fun in Buffalo . This city is going through a renaissance and plenty of fun activities along the waterfront (in summer or winter). Make sure you try some of these must-eat foods in Buffalo too!

Where to stay: Buffalo Marriott LECOM Harborcenter

Cooperstown: on your return trip, be sure to stop in Seneca Falls and visit the Women’s Rights National Historical Park and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Then spend a night in Cooperstown and visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

PA Pitstops: Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, PA

Driving from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh takes about five hours, but going straight through means you will miss out on some many historic, scenic, and family-fun spots along the way.

Lancaster: start your trip with a night in Lancaster’s Pennsylvania Dutch Country. You will want to take a buggy ride, indulge at an Amish feast, or take in some of the historic sites. You can also take a tour of the Turkey Hill Ice Cream Experience.

Where to stay: Residence Inn by Marriott Lancaster

Hershey: next stop is the sweetest place on earth, Hershey . You can spend the day at Hersheypark, visit Hershey’s Chocolate World, or the Hershey Experience. History buffs will enjoy the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, a good introduction before you head to Gettysburg.

Where to stay: Hershey Lodge

Gettysburg: next up is the historic town of Gettysburg . I would highly recommend a guided tour of the Battlefield, but there are many other things to do in town as well.

Laurel Highlands: the Laurel Highlands is a scenic mountainous region east of Pittsburgh offering spectacular natural scenery and outdoor recreation. You will want to spend 2 days rafting down the Ohiopyle, climbing through Pennsylvania’s largest cave at Laurel Caverns, and enjoying mountain resort activities including zip lining, rock climbing, summer tubing, and more.

Where to stay: Nemacolin Woodlands Resort

Pittsburgh: you can fit a lot into 1 day in Pittsburgh , but spend 2 nights if you can spare it. See the view from Mount Washington from the Duquesne Incline, visit the Heinz History Center, explore the Carnegie Science Center, and don’t miss the Tribute to Children statue of Fred Rogers near the Allegheny River. There is also the Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and the Andy Warhol Museum. And if the Pirates are in town, try to catch a baseball game.

COlonial History: Philadelphia, PA to Williamsburg, VA

The drive from Philadelphia to Williamsburg takes about five hours but why not turn it into a learning experience with an American history road trip?

Valley Forge, PA: if you have already explored the historical sites of Philadelphia like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, you may want to venture out of the city for a visit to the Valley Forge National Historical Park .

Baltimore, MD: spend 2 nights in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, where you can easily visit Fort McHenry, visit the National Aquarium, stroll through the cobblestone streets of Fells Point, and enjoy the other Inner Harbor attractions.

Where to stay: Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor , Pier 5 Hotel Baltimore

Washington D.C.: you will want to spend at least 2 to 3 days exploring the nation’s capital. There are so many museums and monuments to explore, you may want to use our DC itinerary. Just remember if you want to visit the White House, you will need to make reservations in advance.

Williamsburg, VA : finish your road trip in Colonial Williamsburg. You will need 2 to 3 days to enjoy the sites, including a full day in Colonial Williamsburg , a visit to Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown, and Busch Gardens or Water Country USA .

Mid-atlantic Gems: Cape May, NJ to Chincoteague, VA

If you want to stick to the Mid-Atlantic coast, this road trip will bring you through cute Victorian towns, beautiful beaches, and nature preserves.

Cape May, NJ: start off your journey in Cape May. This quaint town isn’t like the rest of the Jersey Shore. Enjoy the gourmet restaurants, charming boutiques, and gingerbread-style Victorian homes.

Where to stay : Congress Hall

Lewes, DE: take the ferry across to Lewes, Delaware, another Victorian town full of history, cute cafes, and shops. You must stay a night so that you can take a sunset cruise past the lighthouse and if you get lucky, you may see some dolphins on the way.

Where to stay : Inn at Canal Square

Bethany Beach, DE: as you continue down to the beaches of Southern Delaware, you may also want to stop and check out some of the local breweries and wineries in this region. If you are seeking a boardwalk, combined with bike trails, and great restaurants, you may prefer Rehoboth Beach . Dewey Beach is full of seaside hotels and beach bars, along with gorgeous state beaches. But if you are seeking quiet for a few days at the beach, I would recommend Bethany Beach.

Chincoteague, VA: on your way to Assateague Island National Seashore to see the wild ponies , stop in the cute small town of Berlin, MD or for a stroll on the Ocean City boardwalk. To get up close to the wild horses, I would recommend taking a boat tour with Captain Dan from Chincoteague. Afterward, get some marsh mud ice cream at Island Creamery.

Eastern Shore: Baltimore, MD to Virginia Beach, VA

Swing through Maryland and Virginia’s Eastern Shore on your way down to Virginia Beach. You can then take the highway back to Baltimore, with a stop in Norfolk or Williamsburg on your return trip.

Annapolis, MD: start off with a night in Annapolis. Spend the day exploring some of Annapolis’ historic sites, including the State House and the U.S. Naval Academy, as well as the boutiques and galleries downtown. Don’t leave town without enjoying some crab cakes!

Where to stay: Graduate Annapolis

St. Michaels, MD: spend a night enjoying the Chesapeake side of the Eastern Shore. The charming town of St. Michaels offers up plenty of retail therapy options, but also cultural attractions like the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Nearby you can go tasting at local wineries and breweries, or get out on the water with a kayak or paddle board.

Where to stay: St. Michaels Harbour Inn

Chincoteague, VA : the kids will then enjoy a night on the other side of the peninsula, finding the wild ponies at Chincoteague or exploring the Assateague National Seashore. Be sure to stop for ice cream at the Island Creamery!

Virginia Beach, VA: there are so many things to do in Virginia Beach that you will want to spend a few days enjoying the wide sand beaches and exploring. If you want to take a day trip, pop over to Hampton to explore some early history or visit the Virginia Air and Space Museum.

Where to stay: Hilton Garden Inn Virginia Beach Oceanfront

Wi lliamsburg, VA: finish your road trip in Colonial Williamsburg. Plan on a full day in Colonial Williamsburg , and if you have more time, include a visit to Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown, Busch Gardens, or Water Country USA .

Skyline Drive: Washington DC to Charlottesville, VA

This road trip will bring you through Shenandoah National Park for a mix of outdoor adventures and historic landmarks. We covered this ground during part of a more extensive Virginia road trip a few years back.

Woodstock, VA : spend 2 nights in Woodstock, exploring nearby Shenandoah Caverns, climbing the Woodstock Tower, tubing on the Shenandoah River, enjoying summer sports at Bryce Resort, and hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

Where to stay: Hampton Inn & Suites Woodstock

Harrisonburg, VA: spend the day exploring Shenandoah National Park and driving the Skyline Drive before arriving in Harrisonburg for the night. This is a great road trip for a college tour because James Madison University is also located here. Be sure to also stop at Kline’s Dairy Bar for its famous custard-style ice cream.

Where to stay: Residence Inn Harrisonburg

Charlottesville, VA: plan on spending 2 nights in Charlottesville . Stroll and shop downtown and then enjoy a traditional, Colonial-style luncheon at the historic Michie Tavern, followed by a visit to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate.

In the evening, head up to Carter Mountain Orchard to catch a sunset and some live music. On your second day, you can either explore more history at President James Monroe’s home, do some local wine tasting, tour the campus of the University of Virginia, or kayak along the James River.

Where to stay: Graduate Charlottesville

Richmond, VA: finish up your road trip with a couple of days in Richmond . While it was once the capital of the Confederate South, today the state capital is finding a new identity with plenty of street art, craft beer, and fun dining options. You may want to check out the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, or the Institute of Contemporary Art before heading back to DC.

Carolina Coast: Washington DC to Wilmington, NC

If you are ready to escape the city for the coast, it is time for a road trip down to Wilmington , North Carolina and Wrightsville Beach. The six-hour drive is long but then there is plenty to do on the Carolina coast once you arrive and this road trip gives you a chance to figure out your favorite beach.

Emerald Isle, NC: Emerald Isle is on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, or the “southern” Outer Banks. This area attracts visitors who have returned for decades for the simple beach pleasures of a family vacation. Emerald Isle offers 12 miles of pristine shoreline and incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and Bogue Inlet. Spend a few days enjoying watersports, fishing, or simply sitting on the sand and enjoying the sound of the waves rolling in.

Where to stay: Inn at Pine Knoll Shores , Islander Hotel & Resort

Surf City, NC: stay a couple of days in Surf City, the center of Topsail Island. The relaxing and uncrowded beaches are what some call “the way the beach used to be.” You can also enjoy kayaking, fishing, and boating on the Intercoastal.

Wrightsville Beach, NC: once you have arrived in Wrightsville Beach set up your home base for the next few days to explore. You will want to spend some time in the historic downtown of Wilmington, take a food tour in Kure Beach, stroll the grounds of Airlie Gardens, take a hike in Carolina State Park, or enjoy some beach time. Don’t miss a stop at Britt’s Donuts — the best on the east coast!

Low Country: Raleigh, NC to Savannah, GA

You can make the drive from Raleigh to Savannah in about five hours, but it pays to take the coastal route and make some stops along the way.

Myrtle Beach, SC : how long you spend in Myrtle Beach depends on the vibe of a beach town that you enjoy. If you enjoy a boardwalk, arcades, family attractions, and plenty of kitsch — then you will enjoy a classic family vacation to Myrtle Beach. But you can also get away from the crowds by kayaking through the salt marshes, strolling through Brookgreen Gardens, or paddle boarding.

Where to stay: Island Vista

Charleston, SC: for a complete change of pace, spend a night or two in the historic city of Charleston. Start off with a carriage tour through the downtown, visit some of the historic homes and gardens, and discover why Charleston is a foodie destination.

Where to stay: The Mills House Wyndham Grand

Beaufort, SC: spend a day exploring Beaufort, the upcoming-and-coming “next” Charleston or Savannah. Explore its antebellum mansions and downtown historic district. You can also enjoy the low country marshlands and waterways.

Where to stay: Anchorage 1770 Inn

Savannah, GA: finish up this east coast road trip in Savannah. Wander through the city’s many squares lined with oaks dripping in Spanish moss in Savannah’s historic district . Check out the Prohibition Museum, and then enjoy Savannah’s vibrant dining and craft cocktail scene. Stroll down touristy river street, take a ghost tour, visit some of the historic homes, or spend a day out on the beach at Tybee Island. Blue Ridge Mountains: Charlotte, NC to Gatlinburg, TN

If lakes and mountains are calling you, head towards the Blue Ridge Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains National Park — with a few stops along the way.

Lake Lure, NC: the backdrop to Dirty Dancing, Lake Lure is a favorite family vacation destination. You will need a couple of days to explore Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, Chimney Rock State Park, and Chimney Rock Village which has plenty of shops and dining options, along with a scenic riverwalk next to the creek that kids will enjoy playing in on a warm sunny day. Plus you have to leave time to enjoy the lake, by boat or beach.

Asheville, NC: located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville has many fun things to do with kids . Take the Blue Ridge Highway to Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, and other hiking trails. Swing from the treetops at the Adventure Center of Asheville, play some games at the Asheville Pinball Museum, visit the Biltmore Estate , one of the most popular things to do in North Carolina , or sample some local craft brews. If you have more time to road trip, be sure to explore these Blue Ridge Parkway stops .

Where to stay: Aloft Asheville Downtown

Gatlinburg, NC: use Gatlinburg as your base for exploring parts of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (don’t miss Cades Cove Loop ) and Pigeon Forge as well. You can go hiking, bike through the park, spend a day at Dollywood, go zip lining, see the view from Clingmans Dome, go horseback riding, or see a show.

Where to stay: Margaritaville Resort Gatlinburg

Coastal Islands: Wilmington, NC to Jacksonville, FL

Another coastal road trip, this one bypasses the cities in favor of luxury beach destinations and brings you from Wilmington, NC all the way down to Jacksonville, Florida. A 6.5-hour drive by highway, you can spend a week or more exploring the coast. This trip brings you to some of the best beaches in the USA .

Kiawah Island: start off your road trip in luxury at the Kiawah Resort. This private residential island and resort is famous for its acclaimed golf course, but families can also enjoy 5-Star accommodations and 10 miles of private sandy shoreline.

Hilton Head Island: spend a couple of days enjoying the beaches of Hilton Head Island. You can also golf, take a guided dolphin or kayak tour, or enjoy some low-country cuisine. You won’t find tacky souvenir shops or neon signs. HHI has a quieter, more relaxed way of life.

Amelia Island: finish this luxe road trip at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Relax and enjoy the resort, search for shark teeth, star gaze from the beach, go shopping in downtown Fernandina Beach, take a kayaking tour, or hop a ferry for a day trip to Cumberland Island to see the wild horses.

Civil Rights Trail: Atlanta, GA to Memphis, TN

It is a six-hour drive from Atlanta to Memphis, and I recommend turning it into a Civil Rights road trip .

Atlanta: starting off in Atlanta , if you haven’t already visited I would recommend spending a couple of days visiting some of the important Civil Rights sites including the Center for Civil and Human Rights and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. Another fun way of exploring some history is through a food tour with Atlanta Food Walks.

Where to stay: Loews Atlanta Hotel

Montgomery, AL: plan on spending a full day in Montgomery visiting the Rosa Parks Museum, the Freedom Rides Museum, and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which honors victims of lynchings. On your way to Birmingham, you can make a detour to Selma to walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and visit other Civil Rights sites.

Where to stay : Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa

Birmingham, AL: if you stop in Selma, you may want to plan on spending 2 nights in Birmingham so you don’t have to rush. Be sure to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park, and the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Take some time to enjoy Birmingham’s up-and-coming neighborhoods and food scene too.

Where to stay: Westin Birmingham

Memphis, TN: it is easy to spend at least 3 days in Memphis , more if you want to do a day trip to Graceland. You will need a half-day to take in the sobering exhibits at the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel (the place where MLK Jr. was assassinated.) Also visit Slave Haven, Sun Studios and STAX Museum of American Soul Museum. Just leave time to enjoy some great BBQ and soul food .

Golden Isles: Savannah, GA to St. Augustine, FL

This coastal road trip from Savannah to St. Augustine, Florida stops at many of Georgia’s Islands along the way.

Little St. Simons Island: spend a few days on this private island nature preserve with just 32 other guests and 7 miles of pristine beach to explore. Take advantage of twice-daily naturalist-led expeditions, kayak through the marshes to go bird watching, bike to the beach, or track some of the property’s resident armadillos.

Where to stay: Little St. Simons Resort

Jekyll Island: plan on spending at least 2-3 days on Jekyll Island, another of Georgia’s Golden Isles. You will want to visit Driftwood Beach, check out the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, picnic at South Dunes Beach Park, relax on one of the many Jekyll Island beaches or even enjoy a day at the waterpark.

St. Augustine, FL: finish your road trip with a visit to historic St. Augustine — the country’s oldest continuously occupied city. You can stay on the beach or in town but be sure to check out both. You can visit the Fountain of Youth, walk the ramparts at Castillo St. Marcos, take a trolley tour, take a food tour to discover some of the town’s best places to eat , take a ghost tour, climb a lighthouse, or explore these other fun things to do with kids .

Florida Coast: St. Augustine to Miami, FL

Driving the east coast of Florida from Jacksonville to Miami can be done in five hours, but why miss all the great beaches, history, and fun attractions on the way?

Jacksonville / St. Augustine: you can fly into Jacksonville or start off in St. Augustine. In addition to all the historic town of St. Augustine has to offer (see above), Jacksonville offers plenty for kids too with the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, Museum of Science and History, Sweet Pete’s Candy Shop, TopGolf, and more.

Where to stay: The Lodge & Club at Ponte Vedra Beach

Cocoa Beach, FL: spend 2 to 3 days enjoying the area near Cocoa Beach, including a full day at Kennedy Space Center . You can also kayak past the giraffes at nearby Brevard Zoo in nearby Melbourne or learn to surf at Cocoa Beach, the East Coast surf capital.

Where to stay: Hampton Inn Cocoa Beach

Hollywood, FL: next you can stay a couple of nights in Hollywood, between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Enjoy strolling along the Hollywood Beach Boardwalk, ArtsPark at Young Circle, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, and the Anne Kolb Nature Center, with mangrove trails and an aquarium.

Where to stay: Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort

Miami, FL: if you have had enough beach time, you can focus on Miami’s neighborhoods and cultural attractions including Wynwood Walls, Little Haiti, Little Havana, and the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Even plan a day trip to the Everglades for an alligator airboat tour! Of course, you can’t leave town without at least checking out Miami Beach.

Florida Keys: Miami to Key West, FL

Driving from Miami to Key West is a classic American road trip. The trip can take a good five hours, but you need to leave plenty of time depending on traffic. It gives you the time to get into “island mode.”

Key Largo: it is best to break up the trip by staying a few days in the upper keys, since every key has its own personality. From here you can explore most of what Key Largo and Islamorada have to offer including John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, snorkeling or other watersports at Robbie’s, or glass-bottom boat tours of the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary.

Duck Key: Hawk’s Cay at Duck Key is a great spot for families to stop and relax for a few days, enjoying all the activities on this family-friendly resort.

Key West: on your way to Key West , you will want to stop at the Turtle Hospital in Marathon and Bahia Honda State Park. Once in town, don’t miss out on the famous Sunset Celebration. Southwest Florida: Miami to Tampa, FL

Cross Alligator Alley from Miami to Southwest Florida to explore the beauty of the Paradise Coast. Each town has its own personality so you will want to do a little beach hopping on your way up Florida’s Gulf Coast .

Marco Island: the wide, white sand beaches of Marco Island will entice you to stay for a few days. On the way, you should stop at Everglades National Park and take one of the many airboat tours available. You may also enjoy a dolphin watch tour, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, parasailing, and even jet skiing. A nature walk in Big Cypress Nature Preserve will introduce you to the area’s plant and wildlife.

You can also explore the cultural attractions and family attractions of Tampa, including Busch Gardens, ZooTampa, the Museum of Science and Industry, and more.

Central Florida: Daytona to Clearwater, FL

The shortest road trip may be across Florida from Daytona Beach to Clearwater. Yet there is so much to do in Orlando and Central Florida that you can easily spend a week or more getting the best of all worlds from the beach to the theme park.

Orlando: before leaving Daytona Beach, make sure you spend a day at the Kennedy Space Center , especially if you are lucky enough to be around to launch day. Of course in Orlando you can spend weeks in Disney , Universal , Legoland , and SeaWorld, plus all the water parks like Volcano Bay and H2O Live. But there are so many off-the-beaten-path Orlando attractions too from kayaking through the wetlands to visiting nearby natural springs.

Clearwater Beach: before arriving in Clearwater Beach , you may want to hit up some of the attractions in Tampa, like Busch Gardens or ZooTampa. Then take time to relax on the sugar-soft white sand beaches of Clearwater. Take a pirate cruise, enjoy movies in the park, and visit Winter the Dolphin (famous from the movie A Dolphin’s Tale) and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Panhandle: Orlando, FL to Orange Beach, AL

When you are ready to escape Central Florida for the gorgeous beaches of the Panhandle, head north on this Florida road trip.

Tallahassee: the drive from Orlando to Tallahassee takes about 4 hours, but there are plenty of natural springs, like Crystal River or Rainbow Springs, to stop at along the way. Or, turn it into a college trip and visit the University of Florida in Gainesville. In Tallahassee, you will find trees lined with trees dripping in moss instead of the palm trees of South Florida. Kids will also enjoy the Tallahassee Museum, Challenger Learning Center, Mission San Luis, and the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab.

Destin: get ready for a few days of beach life in Destin on the Panhandle’s Emerald Coast. There are a ton of things to do with kids including the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, Indian Mound Museum, Big Kahuna’s water park, banana boat rides, parasailing, and more.

Orange Beach, AL: one of our favorite beaches, you can compare the Florida versus Alabama Gulf coast experience. The Best Themes for Your Family Road Trip

Your road trip can be anything you want it to be. You can go all out, incorporating costumes, road trip games, playlists, and attractions that fit your theme. However, you can also just set a general theme for your main attractions and insert whatever you want in between. Stick tight to the theme or play it loose. There are no rules here!

We’ve provided three full, themed itineraries and then a few more general ideas. Our suggested routes are just suggestions, though! Remember, if you don’t have the time or ability to get to those specific destinations, you can always take the theme and mold it to fit your itinerary. Almost all of these themes can be applied to shorter road trips in other parts of the country. We’ll give you a few ideas, but feel free to tweak it however you see fit.

1. A Wyatt Earp Western Ride

Take in some of America’s Wild Western towns pretending to be outlaws and lawmen. You’ll explore former boom towns turned open-air museums, learn the history of the Wild West, and imagine the excitement of living in an era of saloons, gunfights, and heroic pioneers.

Suggested Route

For a weeklong trip, start your trip in Dodge City, Kansas, and end in Phoenix, Arizona. The route is about 14 hours one way and will take you through several amusing frontier towns.

Suggested Stops

Dodge City is in the SW corner of Kansas. Visit Boot Hill Museum, which details the wilder days of Dodge City with restored historic buildings and staged gunfights on a recreated Wild West street. Visit the Gunfighters Wax Museum to see a likeness of Wyatt Earp himself as well as Sitting Bull. Dodge City has a lovely trolley tour, and adults will love a stop at Boothill Brewery.

Next, pop in for a horseback ride and history lesson along Palo Duro Canyon in Amarillo with Cowgirls and Cowboys in the West . Stretch your legs with a hike in the second-largest canyon in the United States. Stop in Tombstone, Arizona, at the Old Tombstone Western Themepark , then head for Phoenix. There are two Wild West-themed parks in Phoenix—Frontier Town and Rawhide Western Town. There are obviously wonderful attractions outside the Wild West theme that you could add to your trip in Tucson, Phoenix, and Amarillo.

Over the Top

If you want to take the theme to the extreme, invest in some cowboy costumes before you head out on your road trip. Head to the nearest country and western store (or party store for pretend gear) and get a cowboy hat and gunbelt for each family member. If you can read in the car without getting sick, invest in some classic cowboy novels like True Grit or Lonesome Dove or read Wyatt Earp: The Life Behind the Legend .

2. Astronauts in Flight

If you want to head east instead, suit up in your space garb and head for Cape Canaveral Florida! You’ll learn all about the history of space exploration and maybe even get to see a live launch!

If you want a shorter trip, set the cruise control for Cape Canaveral. If you want a longer journey, start in Houston Texas, and end in Cape Canaveral.

Stop one is the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Then travel along the coast to Pearlington, Mississippi, where you’ll peruse the Lunar Landing Exhibit and the Infinity Science Center . From there, keep on to Gainsville, Florida, and stretch your legs on the Solar Walk , a 4-billion-to-1 scale model of the solar system. Finish your trip in Cape Canaveral, where you can visit the Kenny Space Center and the launch site. You’ll pass right by Disney World on the way, so you might as well pop in for a ride on Space Mountain!

Two easy road trip snacks for little astronauts are asteroid cereal balls and moon rocks. Moon rocks are simply their favorite candies wrapped in aluminum foil balls. Asteroids are melted marshmallows with their favorite cereal dropped in, essentially Rice Krispies Treats with different cereals and formed into balls.

3. ’50s Sock Hop

Why not get nostalgic with a ’50s-inspired summer road trip down nostalgic Route 66? The original classic American road trip is a bucket list getaway. You’ll encounter weird and wonderful roadside attractions, dine in ’50s-inspired diners, and experience drive-in movies, too! This one would also be fun for a group of adult friends. If you have young children, you could bring in elements from Cars to make it more relevant for them.

The original Route 66 trip spans 2,400 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. If you have time, do it all. If not, hop on at the closest junction to you.

For a fun family road trip, you could pretend to be trolls in the forests of California. Take a trip through Sequoia National Park and Redwoods National Forest. Wear some wild-colored wigs, watch the Trolls movies and listen to the soundtrack en route, and imagine living inside the hollowed-out giants of the forest.

5. Surfin’ USA

Hwy 1 is one of the best road trips in the United States. The coastal road runs up most of the West Coast and stops at some of the best surfing spots in the country. This is one of the best road trips for adventurous couples, groups of friends, or families with teenagers. Blast a Beach Boys playlist, pack only board shorts and swimsuits, and make a list of the best surfing spots on the coast. Then, just hop from place to place, living that surfer life!

6. Founding Fathers

For those who want to infuse a little American history into their vacation, one of the best trip ideas is to visit the Freedom Trail in Boston. New England was host to a slew of Colonial activity, Revolutionary War battles, and monumental moments in the story of the USA. The Freedom Trail is a collection of museums, battlegrounds, cemeteries, and historical markers that detail the American Revolution and early American history.

7. The Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail is much more than an old computer game. It’s actually a National Historic Trail running from Independence, Missouri, to Vancouver and was followed by the original pioneers. It flows through six states with numerous interesting small towns and historic sites along the way. You’ll pretend to be a Gold Rush family, charting new land. You’ll see reenactments, learn about harrowing stories of loss and triumph along the difficult route, and even see evidence of the wagon trail ruts still in the soil.

If you have a little one (or husband) who is obsessed with T-Rex, add Colorado to your trip plans this summer. For a fun and educational road trip, find a few Native American ruins sites near you. 10. Junior Ranger

The National Park Service has a wonderful educational program for kids known as the Junior Rangers. While activities vary from park to park, they’re always fun. Ranger Trek is a great resource for finding Junior Ranger programs near you, and they have recently created a cute travel journal to memorialize all your ranger certificates and booklets. If your kids love the outdoors, spend your summer vacation pretending to be park rangers!

11. Presidential Parade

Strap on your white wig and top hat and head for Washington, D.C. After visiting the presidential monuments, the home of the current Commander-in-Chief, and former homes of the previous presidents sprinkled around D.C., you can visit the homes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and Dwight Eisenhower all within a day trip from the big city.

12. Lewis and Clark Trail

Explorers Lewis and Clark were instrumental in the mapping of the United States, and their exploration route is now a National Historic Trail winding through 4,900 miles and more than 60 Native American tribal territories. It runs from Pittsburgh to the Pacific and is marked with road signs and historic sights all along the route! A fake fur cap is a necessity for this themed road trip!

13. International Travel Theme

Almost every state has a city or small town named Paris, London, or some form of York (Yorktown, New York). Design a road trip to visit these small towns. Before your trip, do some research on the original cities and create some clipart printables with fun facts to use as coloring sheets. It will keep the kiddos entertained en route.

For a little twist on this idea, you could visit international communities in the United States, like the Bavarian village of Helen, Georgia; Holland, Michigan; or the Danish Community of Solvang, California.

14. The Princess Parade

There’s nothing more exciting to a little princess than spending a day in a real-life castle. While the United States isn’t exactly known for castles, we do have a few that your little princess will love. For instance, there’s Grey Tower in Glenside, Pennsylvania, Hammond Castle in Gloucester, and Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga, California. The drive from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Los Angeles is one of the best routes on Earth for visiting movie filming locations. Whether you live on the East or West Coast, you can easily design a trip to visit America’s historic lighthouses. These structures often occupy prime property and boast some gorgeous views. Many have been turned into mini museums as well and have some interesting histories. If you’re interested in maritime history or architecture, this would be a fun one. Plus, you get to eat fresh, yummy seafood all week!

From San Francisco to Savannah, some say the United States is haunted by the people of its past. Both a massive accomplishment and a bittersweet end of an era, completing your studies can also be a reality check as you begin the next phase of your life.

So, where should you go once you graduate? These 10 incredible destinations allow you to put off real life for a little bit longer.

Affordable and with a wealth of diverse things to do, Mexico is the perfect post-graduation escape. The country has a happy place for everyone. Head to Tulum for a beachy, out-till-dawn vacation that is bursting will beach clubs, upscale cocktails and cerulean cenotes. Look to Puerto Vallarta for a classic, lay-by-the-pool escape. In Mexico City , you can try local delicacies and get lost in a museum for the afternoon. Stop by the stunning Museo Universitario del Chopo , which boasts an extensive contemporary art collection.  Oaxaca offers a mix of Indigenous and colonial influences, with day trips out to explore the natural world and local villages. Head to Santiago Apoala for a look at a remote Mixtec village in the heart of a towering mountain range. If the last four years in the library require some sunshine and a warm place to recover, there is no better place than Mexico to finish that beach read.

5. Vietnam 

Affordable, beautiful and warm, a graduation trip to Vietnam gets you out of your comfort zone. Get lost in a sea of mopeds in Hanoi and slurp pho on stools along the sidewalk. Head up to Halong Bay , where you can tour its limestone islands on a junk boat. Enjoy an urban metropolis like Ho Chi Minh City , wander the Binh Tay Market  or visit Vietnam's only Taoist temple,  Khanh Van Nam Vien Pagoda , before cruising along the Mekong Delta and getting to know the locals at the Cai Rang Floating Market .

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

For a graduation trip that melds celebration with culture, look no further than New Orleans . The loud streets of this city burst with energy: live bands, dancing, cocktails and more. Dedicate time to visiting some of the historical sites in Johannesburg, such as the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill , a former prison turned Constitutional Court. Then, hit the beach to surf some famous waves at Addington Beach along the iconic Golden Mile or catch glimpses of South Africa's diverse wildlife in the expansive Kruger National Park . Keep your eyes peeled for big cats, elephants, rhinos and more. Find time to catch at least one sunset from the top of Table Mountain . Its unmatched views are accessible by cable car in Cape Town.

With stunning fjords, shooting geysers, natural hot springs and the northern lights – Iceland offers an otherworldly reset from your studies. A nature-first vacation, try and dedicate some time beyond the beautiful capital Reykjavik . You'll need a large budget to chase waterfalls, sip pints and toast your graduation in Iceland, but you'll look at the world entirely anew.

Florence offers a decadence and youthfulness that is easier to access than in Rome or Naples , and its Renaissance beauty will fill your aching heart if you don't want to leave university or college.
