8 Scenic Places You’ll Fall In Love With In The Midwest

Published on February 6th, 2017 by Nikki Cleveland

Places like Florida and the Pacific Northwest may be hot spots for RVers but the Midwest is often overlooked. It’s well known for the wide open corn fields, however there’s also glimmering shoreline on the Great Lakes, lush forest, and plenty of campgrounds where RVers can pull up and enjoy it all.

Next time you’re driving through the heart of America, we highly recommend stopping by some of these parks and taking in this area’s underrated hidden beauty.

1. Ludington State Park, Michigan

campgrounds midwest

Ludington State Park is an idyllic spot for hiking and camping between Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. The park has amazing views with shoreline along both bodies of water, sand dunes, marshland, forest, and a 112-foot lighthouse you can hike to.

13 Marvelous Midwest Road Trips (Itinerary Ideas + Tips!)

Of all the regions of the USA, there’s a good chance that (for non-locals) the Midwest is the most surprising–and that alone is an excellent reason to plan a Midwest road trip!

Packed with diverse national and state parks, incredible beaches (yes, beaches!), interesting cities, a seemingly endless array of quaint lighthouses and charming small towns, and so much more, the Midwest is far more than “flyover country”.

Sure, many of the best road trips in the Midwest require a lot of time on the interstate.

And yes, visiting in winter probably isn’t optimal for most first-time visitors.

But, if you’ve never visited the region before, any of these incredible Midwest road trip routes–many of them written by locals–are bound to leave you enchanted.

From the wide-open spaces of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota to the stunning architecture of Chicago to the historic charm of Mackinac Island, there are so many incredible places to visit in the Midwest.

We have offered suggestions for the best hotels in each place but if you are doing this as a true road trip it is really cool to do it in an RV. You can rent incredible RVs and camper vans from Outdoorsy, book here for your next road trip!

Don’t underestimate the driving distances.

The Midwest is an expansive region with lots of wide open spaces, and that can lend itself to drives that are longer than some visitors might expect!

Be sure to check estimated driving times carefully when planning your route, and build in plenty of stops to stretch your legs.

… And also to check out the many quirky roadside attractions in the region, like the Corn Palace in South Dakota or the American Gothic House in Iowa!

If you’re renting a car, shop around.

The best company to rent a car from for your Midwest road trip will likely vary dramatically depending on where and when you’re traveling.

Sometimes large international carriers offer the best prices, sometimes local outfits. Sometimes one company has an excellent base price, but terrible rental requirements.

The best way to find your rental car is to search through  Discover Cars , which will sift through dozens of companies to find the best combination of low prices and reasonable rental terms for your road trip route.

Browse rental cars  for your Midwestern USA road trip today!

Read the rental requirements carefully.

Especially make sure you know how many miles you’ve been allotted (or ideally, if they’re unlimited), if you need to return the car empty or full of fuel, what to do if the car breaks down, and what damages you’re liable for in the event of an accident.

Make sure you pack the right gear.

From safety gear to snacks, a road trip in the Midwest requires bringing the right tools along, whether you’re taking a short vacation, trying out van life, or something in between.

We recommend taking a look at the suggestions on  our road trip packing list  before you go!

Don’t overextend yourself.

Exploring all of the incredible places to visit in the Midwest is a project for a lifetime, not one trip!

As tempting as it is to add on additional driving to stop at just one more waterfall, lighthouse, or small town, make sure that you leave enough time to thoroughly explore each destination rather than spending the entirety of your vacation driving from one spot to the next.

Be prepared to be surprised!

If this is your first trip to the Midwest, there’s a good chance that its diversity and beauty will enchant you in all the best ways.

When exploring the Midwest, beautiful beaches, delicious food, gorgeous fall foliage, incredibly warm people, and dynamic cities–among many other treasures–are just around the corner.

South Dakota State + National Parks Road Trip

From Allison of Eternal Arrival

One of the best Midwest road trips is a loop from Rapid City, South Dakota making stops in its two national parks, as well as Custer State Park!

This is an easy road trip that you can do in as little as 4 days, but you can also make it part of a larger  South Dakota road trip itinerary .

Start in Rapid City to begin your trip and then make your way first to Wall, SD.

This fun little town is a great place to stop at Wall Drug Store for scenic photos in an Old West-feeling setting.

From there, head through Badlands National Park from the Northeast Entrance, taking the 30-mile Badlands Loop Road and stopping at as many overlooks as possible!

Depart via the Pinnacles Entrance and then make your way to Wind Cave National Park.

Wind Cave National Park is beautiful but there must be some advance planning as you need advance reservations to visit Wind Cave.

Book your reservation for one of the 3 tours, ranging from moderate to hard difficulty, on the  NPS website here .

After visiting Wind Cave, swing up north towards Custer State Park for one of the final stops on this South Dakota tour.

Custer State Park in the Black Hills is home to lots of stunning wildlife, including bison, pronghorn antelope, and elk. Bring your binoculars and a zoom lens!

Finally, drive back to Rapid City to end your road trip.

Driving Distance

Recommended road trip length.

At a minimum, you should spend at least 2 days in Badlands National Park, 1 day in Wind Cave National Park, and 1 day in Custer State Park.

This road trip can be done easily in 4 days, but you can stretch it out to a week and visit other sites like Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills National Forest, Keystone, and Crazy Horse.

Ohio Road Trip Along Lake Erie’s Coast

From Theresa of Fueled By Wanderlust

One of the Midwest’s best road trips is  driving Ohio’s Lake Erie coast   from Cleveland to Marblehead for gorgeous lake views, beautiful sunsets, and lots of local history.

Beginning in downtown Cleveland, spend a day exploring the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Old Arcade, and West Side Market.

Depart Cleveland the next day via Route 2, with several lakefront parks to your right.

Edgewater Park and Lakewood Park offer Cleveland skyline views, while Edgewater Park and Huntington Reservation have pretty beaches.

Continue for thirty minutes towards Lorain, OH, transitioning over to Route 6.

While being a rust belt city, Lorain also offers a broad beach at Lakeview Park and the charming Lorain Harbor Lighthouse.

Literature fans may also know it as Toni Morrison’s hometown and the setting of  The Bluest Eye .

Vermilion, the next town over, is a quaint location for an overnight stay.

Its small downtown has an old-timey feel, with historic storefronts and a soda shop.

red and white lighthouse in vermilion ohio with lake erie in the background

Take a stroll down Main Street for elegant dining at Chez Francois, and to see tiny Vermilion Lighthouse and its adjacent beach.

After leaving Vermilion, continue down Route 6 for a short rural break until you reach Sandusky.

After consuming Asian fusion food and craft beer at Small City Taphouse, walk 10 minutes to the Maritime Museum of Sandusky.

This museum features exhibits on the Battle of Lake Erie and Sandusky’s role in the Underground Railroad.

If you love roller coasters, plan an extra day in Sandusky to catch thrills at Cedar Point.

Finally, drive 30 more minutes to the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula to reach the 200-year-old Marblehead Lighthouse.

This beauty is the oldest continuously running lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

With no stops,  this drive  takes a little over 2.5 hours.

However, I recommend slowing down over a long weekend to fully enjoy each stop.

North Dakota Road Trip (Fargo to Theodore Roosevelt National Park)

From Anwar of Beyond My Door

Many people overlook North Dakota, however, the state has a plethora of road trip-worthy sites.

Starting in Fargo, visiting the town that is unfairly characterized by the movie of the same name, visitors can enjoy this hip small city of the north.

Be sure to check out the Plains Arts Museum and the wonderful contemporary, traditional, and folk art of the region.

For those with more time, a quick stop in adjacent Moorhead MN, and the Hjemkomst Center, visitors can connect with the local Scandinavian culture through this incredible boat journey.

From Fargo, head west stopping in Jamestown, to see the old wild west town and the largest buffalo.

Similar to many other big roadside attractions throughout the state.

From here, visitors can detour slightly north and visit interesting Lewis and Clark expedition sites such as Fort Mandan (where Lewis and Clark wintered) and the nearby Knife River Indian Villages known as the birthplace of Sacajawea.

rv trips midwest

Both can easily be visited on the same day before heading on towards Bismarck.

Bismarck, the capital but smaller and sleepier than Fargo has a cute downtown as well as beautiful nature nearby.

But if you are pressed for time save the nature exploration until you head to  Theodore Roosevelt NP , 2 hours west of the capital.

Named for the 26th president, the park protects North Dakotan Badlands and local flora and fauna such as bison.

The park is divided into two non-connected units and at least 2 days are worth spending in the park.

river running through the plains in north dakota road trip

But if you have very limited time, the South Unit has more diversity of sights.

For those with more time and desire to explore local history, a quick stop at Fort Union Trading Post (90 minutes from the north unit) is worth a look at the fur trade and one of the most important forts in the mid-1800s.

About 550 miles, plus time in the national park.

This Midwest road trip can be anywhere from 4 to 8+ days.

It’s recommended to spend at least 2 days in Fargo, a day en route to Bismarck, 1-2 days in and around Bismarck, and another 2-3 days in Theodore Roosevelt NP.

Minnesota’s Iron Range

From Susan of This Big Wild World

Have you heard of Minnesota’s Iron Range ?

Stretching from central Minnesota and north to the border of Canada, the region is home to some of the best mountain biking in the country, excellent hiking, and the pristine wilderness of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

This Midwest road trip itinerary starts and ends in Minneapolis, which is a city worth exploring!

Enjoy an afternoon at a Minnesota Twins baseball game or paddling the lakes in the heart of the city.

Next, head to Crosby which is part of Cuyuna Country. What once were mining pits are now crystal clear lakes surrounded by mountain biking trails for all levels.

Spend a day paddle boarding or kayaking the lakes or cruising the trails. Gear rentals are available in Crosby.

From there, drive to Ely which is a gateway into the Boundary Waters.

This area is among the most beautiful and remote wilderness in the US, best explored by canoe. Find guides and outfitters in Ely for gear and permits.

For hiking, try the Norberg Lake Trail at nearby Bear Head Lake State Park or the Bass Lake Loop Trail.

Duluth is a harbor town on Lake Superior, offering easy access to popular destinations along Minnesota’s north shore.

Be sure to watch for the big ships entering the harbor near Canal Park, relax on the beach at Park Point, and stop at one of the many breweries in town.

Ursa Minor and Bent Paddle are local favorites!

These destinations are just 2-3 hours apart and have tons to explore.

Spend a minimum of 1 day in each of the 4 destinations for a 4-5 day trip.

Or, take your time and spend up to 3 days in each destination for a 7-10 day road trip.

Badlands National Park Scenic Road Trip

From Theresa of The Local Tourist

At only39 miles, the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway is a short but mighty road trip in South Dakota.

Driving through Badlands National Park  is a surreal experience.

You’ll feel like you’re on another planet instead on a road trip in the Midwest USA.

The drive begins in Cactus Flat at Exit 131 off I-90. You’ll know you’re nearing the exit because you’ll begin seeing sand-colored buttes, spires, and cliffs to the south.

After taking the exit, it’s a short distance to enter Badlands National Park.

Before you even get to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, you’ll see a few overlooks and trailheads.

winding road through badlands national park

The visitor center itself is a great place to get your bearings, take a bathroom break, and get something to eat at the restaurant next door.

From there, you’ll continue west through the otherworldly landscape.

In addition to the unique formations, you’re also likely to encounter pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, bison, and prairie dogs.

The road ends at Wall, which is a destination in its own right with its famous, or infamous, Wall Drug.

You could drive straight through in about an hour, but what’s the fun in that?

For a more immersive experience, camp at one of the two campgrounds within the park and take some day hikes.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

From Linda of Midwest Explored

Easily one of the best road trips in the Midwest USA, a drive through Michigan’s upper peninsula is a must-do.

Start one of the best Michigan road trips of them all by crossing Mackinac Bridge into the Upper Peninsula.

If you want, leave your car behind and enjoy all that Mackinac Island has to offer before continuing on.

After all, this island is completely car-free and features top attractions like Fort Mackinac and Arch Rock.

Next, continue onto the peninsula and check out the natural beauty of Kitch-iti-kipi, an incredible local spring with crystal-clear waters.

Then, hop back on the road and drive to Porcupine Wilderness State Park.

view of fall foliage and a lake in porcupine wilderness state park, one of the best stops on a michigan road trip midwest itinerary

It’s a wonderful area with stellar views of Lake Superior, gorgeous local waterfalls, and 90+ miles of trails that will take you through vast old-growth forests.

From here, drive until you hit Marquettethe.

It’s known for being the largest city in this UP (Upper Peninsula for all the non-Michiganders out there) and is a great place to explore Presque Isle Park, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Lakenenland Sculpture Park.

Finally, conclude your road trip at the Pictured Lakes National Lakeshore with its dynamic natural landscape.

Be sure to explore the multicolored Pictured Rocks cliffs, Miners Castle, Chapel Rock sandstone formations, and Twelvemile Beach.

While this road trip isn’t long, taking around 2 hours to drive, plan on devoting between 3 and 5 days to this trip.

You could definitely spend an entire day on Mackinac Island alone!

Mount Rushmore to the Badlands, South Dakota

From Candice of CS Ginger

Mount Rushmore to the Badlands of South Dakota is a fantastic Midwest road trip route.

While there’s a sad story behind the impressive facade of Mount Rushmore, there’s no doubt that visiting the monument and associated museum is an incredible experience.

After visiting Mount Rushmore and touring all it has to offer, you will travel to the Badlands National Park.

Badlands National Park is a very beautiful and unique area.

There are really fun hiking trails in the Badlands , and it is a great place to visit with your family.

You will be surprised at all the animals the Badlands offer.

You can see big horn sheep, buffalo, and the famous prairie dog area where you will see lots of prairie dogs. You can get very close to the prairie dogs but don’t touch them or get too close!

3 praire dogs in badlands national park, a great stop on a south dakota midwest road trip

If you want to stay in the park, you will need to stay at Cedar Pass Lodge in one of their rental cabins.

There are some hotels and camping options close by, but the Cedar Pass Lodge is the only option if you are looking at staying inside the park.

This is a classic road trip in the Midwest, and a fantastic way to spend a long weekend (or longer!).

About 80 miles.

We recommend spending at least 3 days enjoying this road trip in South Dakota, though 4-5 days would be better if you have more than a long weekend to work with.

Missouri + Southern Illinois Road Trip

From Tori of Tori Pines Travels

When planning a road trip in the Midwest, you won’t want to miss Missouri and Southern Illinois.

The perfect road trip includes a variety of cities filled with activities, nature to explore, and delicious food to eat, and you’ll find plenty of that here.

Start in Kansas City, Missouri where you’ll visit the American Jazz Museum and Money Museum.

For the famous Kansas City BBQ, check out Gates Bar-B-Q and order burnt ends.

Spend two nights here, before continuing east across the state to St. Louis.

A weekend in St. Louis is the perfect amount of time.

Start at the country’s smallest national park, The Gateway Arch National Park, ride the tram to the top for incredible views over the city.

The free museum teaches the history of St. Louis and its title as the gateway to the west.

That night, visit Busch Field for a Cardinals game with the arch as your backdrop.

For kids, and kids at heart, spend a few hours at the City Museum, the most unique children’s museum you’ll find.

Fill the rest of your time with visits to the free activities, the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art Museum, and Missouri History Museum!

Eat some of St. Louis’s staples, toasted ravioli, St. Louis Style pizza, St. Louis style ribs, and gooey butter cake.

Finish off the road trip by venturing across the river into Illinois to Shawnee National Forest.

The draw here is the Garden of the Gods which features fun dog-friendly hikes and super unique rock formations.

The whole trip should take about 5 to 6 days, and will only require about 6.5 hours of driving.

Great Cities of the Midwest Road Trip Loop

From Lisa of Waves and Cobblestones

Looking for a fun road trip itinerary in the Midwest?

Making a round trip from Chicago, Illinois to Milwaukee and Madison in Wisconsin will give you a great sampling of museums, architecture, and natural beauty to enjoy.

Start your road trip in Chicago, Illinois. One of the undisputed best experiences here is the architectural river cruise .

Your vantage point from the river gives you great views of the skyscrapers, and you’ll learn a lot about Chicago’s architecture and history.

Chicago is also home to several fantastic museums, including the famous Art Institute of Chicago.

The Field Museum is the home of Sue, the largest Tyrannosaurus rex specimen ever discovered.

Chicago Skyline with river filled with sailboats in the center, an excellent view to seek out during 3 days in Chicago

Your next stop is Madison, Wisconsin. This college town is also the capital of Wisconsin.

The Capitol building is incredible and is free to tour. Be sure to take in the panoramic city views from the observation deck!

One of the  best things to do in Madison   is to visit the Olbrich Botanical Gardens.

The outdoor areas of the garden are free to visit. Don’t miss the phenomenal Thai pavilion and garden – this is definitely the garden’s highlight!

Continue on to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Enjoy local favorites like bratwurst and fried cheese curds (and perhaps a local beer) at Old World 3 rd  Street.

Then take a stroll along the downtown Riverwalk and enjoy the public art including ‘The Bronz Fonz’.

Spend an afternoon at one of Milwaukee’s museums, such as the world’s only Harley-Davidson Museum.

Be sure to take a look at the amazing architecture of the Milwaukee Art Museum, with its Burke Brise Soleil ‘wings’.

Route 66 Road Trip Through the Midwest (Chicago to Oklahoma)

From Kylie of Between England and Iowa

The classic US road trip Route 66 starts in Chicago Illinois and passes through the Midwestern states of Missouri and Kansas before crossing into Oklahoma and continuing west all the way to Los Angeles, California.

Of course, it’s quicker to travel on the Interstate but the heart of the road trip is to follow the original route across the country.

Travelers could easily spend a couple of days exploring Chicago alone, but it’s at least worthwhile checking out the Route 66 BEGIN sign at E Adams St and S Michigan Ave.

The stretch across Illinois between  Chicago to St Louis   can take upwards of 12 hours, especially if stopping at several of the different points of interest.

historic route 66 begin sign in chicago, start of one of the top road trips in midwest usa

When the Interstate was built, it bypassed all the small towns along the route.

To encourage travelers to come back many of the towns created unique roadside attractions.

Today, you can find a mixture of historic buildings that were part of the original Route 66 as well as the unique attractions from the time after the Interstate was built.

Some highlights between Chicago, IL, and Catoosa, OK include The Gemini Giant (Wilmington, IL), Pontiac, IL, the Chain of Rocks Bridge, IL, Gateway Arch National Park (St. Louis, MO), the World’s Largest Rocking Chair (Fanning, MO), Cars On The Route (Galena, KS) and the Blue Whale (Catoosa, OK).

Approximately 700 miles.

This road trip could be done in around 3 days (overnight stops in St Louis, MO, and Carthage, MO).

However, with the addition of spending time exploring the larger cities of Chicago and St. Louis, it is better to take around 5 or 6 days.

Great Lakes Road Trip in Wisconsin + Michigan

From Jenifer of The Evolista

One of the best Midwestern road trip journeys is a National Lakeshore Road Trip to visit 2 of the best kayaking trips in the US , Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a spectacularly beautiful area in the most northern part of Wisconsin that has a 12-mile stretch of mainland rocky cliffs with sea caves and a chain of 21 islands.

It also has the distinction of having the most lighthouses in the USA.

A kayak tour of the mainland sea caves will take you to the prettiest spots around the reddish sandstone shoreline.

You will cruise through incredible caves in turquoise water and can also hike the Lakeshore Trail through old-growth forest for a different vantage point.

apostle islands national lakeshore as seen from the water at sunset

On your way to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, break up the drive with a day at Porcupine Mountains State Park where you’ll find waterfalls, tons of hiking trails, and gorgeous views, especially for fall foliage.

It adds an extra hour of drive time but it’s completely worth it.

When you arrive in Munising, you’ll be treated to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore’s towering multi-colored cliffs, bright blue waters, and hidden caves.

On a kayak tour, you can paddle to Lovers Leap Arch, Chapel Rock, Battleship Row, and sea caves. Or hike the Chapel Loop Trail to get even more incredible views.

But this place isn’t all about the rocks. Don’t miss Twelvemile Beach for a traditional beach day or enjoy the sunset at Sandpoint beach.

And you’ll also find beautiful waterfalls at Munising Falls and Miner’s Falls.

This road trip in the Midwest takes approximately 6 hours of driving.

Plan at least 4 days to be able to do daily activities and a week to enjoy at a more leisurely pace.

Kansas City, Omaha + Des Moines Road Trip Loop

From Sage of Everyday Wanderer

There are many things to love about Kansas City — flowing fountains, tree-lined boulevards, and the world’s best barbeque.

So before you head north on this road trip loop through America’s Heartland, be sure you’ve hit all of the highlights in the Chiefs Kingdom.

Start with the Liberty Memorial. This 217-foot tall limestone tower surrounded by acres of green space honors those who perished in World War I and is home to the only museum dedicated to the Great War.

It’s also one of the best places to view the Kansas City skyline.

Then head to the Country Club Plaza where you can shop, dine, and admire Spanish-inspired architecture and several of the city’s most renowned fountains.

Then stroll through the sculpture garden, explore the glass maze, and snap a selfie with one of four, oversized badminton shuttlecocks at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

And you certainly won’t want to leave town without eating your fill of Kansas City barbeque .

plate of smoked barbecue ribs in a restaurant

The next stop is Nebraska’s biggest city, Omaha, about three hours to the north.

Walk across the Missouri River – a natural border between Nebraska and Iowa – on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.

Then enjoy The RiverFront connecting river to Downtown Omaha with lush green space, pet-friendly areas, a sculpture garden, and more.

Fuel up at a cafe or eatery in the Old Market, and don’t miss the world-renowned Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

The capital city of Des Moines is about two hours east of Omaha.

Stretch your legs after the drive by wandering through Pappajohn Sculpture Park or strolling through the botanical garden.

Tour the gold-domed capitol building, and learn more about Iowa’s biggest city with an interactive scavenger hunt.

skyline of des moines iowa at sunset, a fun stop on midwest road trip itineraries

Outdoor enthusiasts will want to hike or bike the Des Moines River Trail, and foodies will want to compare the barbeque at Flying Mango to what they enjoyed in Kansas City.

On the way back to Kansas City, stop in Pella. With its working grain windmill, Dutch bakeries, and thousands of tulips in the spring, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to the Netherlands while exploring the middle of America.

580  miles.

We recommend enjoying this Midwest road trip itinerary over the course of a week, in order to allow about 2 days per city.

In a recent post in our RV Lifestyle Facebook group, a member named Rhonda posted, “Looking for ideas for Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. We know these are areas often overlooked but have beauty and history.”

Our RV community came to the rescue with nearly 150 comments and lots of excellent suggestions of things to do in the Midwest.

While Rhonda included a couple of southern states in her post, we’re going to focus on the Midwest states she mentioned in this article. I’m going to round up a bunch of the members’ different suggestions and organize them by state.

Then, you can add these often overlooked destinations to your itinerary!

Best Things To Do in the Midwest States

Starved Rock State Park in Illinois 39 Best Things To Do in the Midwest (According to RVers)

The Midwest actually consists of 12 states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

If you’ve followed RV Lifestyle for any length of time, you know Michigan and the Great Lakes are one of our favorite places to explore. We’ve written an entire Adventure Guide for each ( see ebook bundle here ). And the Dakotas are known for Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone. (We also have a Yellowstone 7-Day Adventure Guide ).

So, to Rhonda’s point, we’re going to focus on the Midwest states most often overlooked: Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, and Nebraska.

Since our community members gave SO many great suggestions, I’m going to list as many as possible and link you to where you can explore them further.

(Psst… I didn’t realize how much there is to do in Nebraska!)

Best Things to Do in Illinois

Cahokia Mounds

I owe most of the following list to two members of our RV Lifestyle Facebook group . Karen and Kevin, thanks for making my job easy! In truth, I owe thanks to every single member who contributed to this entire article. Thanks so much!

Karen’s Suggestions :

  • Cahokia Mounds : remains of “most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico”
  • Abraham Lincoln’s Springfield Home
  • Rend Lake : one of the largest lakes in Illinois known for great fishing
  • Starved Rock State Park : waterfalls, bluffs, and rugged canyons
  • Ulysses S. Grant Home

Kevin’s Suggestions (I’m just copying and pasting his post here since he explains it so well. He even included the links!):

“Greetings Rhonda! Far Southern Illinois is often overlooked by travelers after a long day of travel, but offers a number of interesting places to camp as well as a variety of things to do.

Cairo, Illinois, the Southernmost point of Illinois is home to the convergence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers that can be viewed from an elevated platform in Fort Defiance State Park .

Also in Cairo, you will find the Cairo Customs House Museum . Built in the late 1860s, it was one of the furthest inland points at which US Custom Houses were located.

There is also the Magnolia Mansion . A Victorian Era Mansion that has been restored as a museum and is open to the public.

Moving north from Cairo, you can visit Superman’s hometown , Metropolis, Illinois and take your photos with his statue, and visit other related attractions.

While in the area you are in or very near the Shawnee National Forest with a huge variety of camping opportunities as well as recreational opportunities.

Public camping and recreation areas aren’t limited to Shawnee National Forest. Southern Illinois is also home to several State Parks.

Giant City State Park , Makanda, Illinois — home to fantastic scenery, camping, trails, and a Lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps that is stately in its organic beauty and serves excellent meals.

While at Giant City State Park, you are just a few miles from one of the area's most recognized attractions — The Bald Knob Cross of Peace near Alto Pass Illinois.

Alto Pass is in the heart of the Southern Illinois Wine Country . There are numerous Vineyards and wine trails in the Southern Illinois region , including Shawnee Wine Trail .

Ferne Clyffe State Park near Goreville is another State Park in far Southern Illinois that is known for its hiking trails and camping opportunities.

The Trail of Tears traversed far Southern Illinois and there are a number of historical markers and other features of note. Trail of Tears State Forest near Jonesboro, Illinois.”

(Can we all give a round of applause to Kevin?!)

Best Things to Do in Kansas

39 Best Things To Do in the Midwest (According to RVers) 2

When most people think of Kansas, they picture tornadoes and yellow brick roads. But there are so many wonderful (and real) things to do in this beautiful midwestern state.

  • National Orphan Train Museum : learn the “forgotten history” of 250,000 orphaned children taken by train from eastern cities to the Midwest
  • Lovewell State Park : Lovewell Lake is a “hidden gem” for anglers and outdoor lovers
  • Flint Hills : unique tallgrass prairie ecosystem
  • Council Grove Reservoir : great recreational lake for boating and fishing
  • Lake Meade State Park : fishing and lakeside camping
  • Praire Dog State Park : a colony of 300 prairie dogs, 1886 school house, adobe home, and great camping

Best Things to Do in Nebraska

39 Best Things To Do in the Midwest (According to RVers) 3

When I first started reading the comments, I did not expect such a long list of recommendations for things to do in Nebraska. That’s what makes our RV Lifestyle community so great! Your input is always so valuable!

Many of the following locations (especially the Archway and Scotts Bluff) were mentioned multiple times.

  • The Archway : Native American and pioneer history that “tells the story of the adventurers who followed the Great Platte River Road and helped to build America”
  • Fort Kearney State Historical Park : first fort built to protect travelers on the Oregon-California Trail
  • Fort Robinson State Park : where Crazy Horse was killed
  • Scotts Bluff National Monument : 800-foot landmark towering above the North Platte River that helped guide pioneers
  • Chimney Rock : a massive natural landmark for countless pioneers journeying west
  • Homestead National Historical Park : honoring the Homestead Act of 1862 that enticed millions of people to cultivate the frontier with the promise of free land.
  • Arbor Lodge State Park: Family home of J. Morton of Morton Salt, who founded Arbor Day
  • Gothenburg : Pony Express Capital of Nebraska
  • Lake McConaughey : largest reservoir in Nebraska known for family-friendliness, fishing, and water sports
  • Pioneer Village : museum housing the most comprehensive collections of Americana
  • Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo : “one of the world’s top 5 zoos”
  • Geographic Center of the U.S .: Just so you can say you’ve been to the exact center of the United States

I was excited to see the lead in, but slightly disappointed to see that Missouri wasn’t included. Being from there, I easily recognize that Missouri could be a series article entirely on its own. I’m wondering when readers might expect a similar “Best Things” article on the Show Me state.

Best Midwest RV Parks & Campgrounds To Explore

The Midwest, defined as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Wisconsin , and North and South Dakota, encompasses some of America’s most famous landmarks. Many natural attractions and historical sites are here, including the Great Lakes and the start of iconic Route 66.

With so much to explore, the Midwest is ideal for an RV road trip ! From camping near thrilling theme parks to tranquil Amish Country getaways, we’ve put together eight of the best Midwest campgrounds for your trip itinerary.

8 Best Places To Camp in the Midwest

The Midwest is full of amazing RV campgrounds and state parks to explore. You just have to know where to look! Here are eight Midwest campgrounds to check out as you plan your road trip.

1. Robidoux RV Park - Gering, Nebraska

Another hidden gem as far as Midwest campgrounds go, Robidoux is nestled right at the base of Scotts Bluff National Monument. This striking natural landmark towers 800 feet above the North Platte River, providing a beautiful backdrop and endless recreation opportunities.

The RV park offers level campsites with picnic tables and cable TV, community BBQ grills, a playground, basketball courts, and a large multi-purpose room ideal for special events. Best of all, the sites have views of Scotts Bluff.

2. Geneseo Campground - Geneseo, Illinois

This tranquil location is far removed from any hustle and bustle but still just a hop, skip, and a jump away from big cities, including Cedar Rapids, Chicago, and Milwaukee. Geneseo is one of the best Midwest campgrounds.

Outdoor lovers will enjoy everything from fishing and kayaking in the historic Hennepin Canal to hiking and biking. There’s also excellent antique shopping nearby when you want to venture out. RVs, including big rigs, are welcome here, and with its camp store and proximity to I-80, it doesn’t get much more convenient.

3. Shipshewana North Park Campground - Shipshewana, Indiana

Shipshewana North Park Campground.

Onsite, the pet-friendly campground has Wi-Fi, a game room, and, best of all, the famous old-fashioned custard stand!

4. Adventureland Resort Campground - Altoona, Iowa

If you’re looking for some family-friendly adventure , this park has some of the best camping in the Midwest! Situated on the grounds of one of Iowa’s most popular attractions, Adventureland theme park , the campground has an ideal location and loads of amenities.

Relax by the pool, let the little ones run wild in the playground, and bring Fido to take advantage of the dog park. The campground also has modern shower and laundry facilities, and even dedicated van sites.

5. Gunsmoke RV Park - Dodge City, Kansas

The original Wild West town, there’s a ton to see in Dodge City. Experience historical attractions nearby, including gunfight reenactments and the infamous Fort Dodge, then come back to Kansas’ #1 rated campground and relax for the evening.

Gunsmoke has Wi-Fi, a pool and hot tub, a video game lounge, an ice cream parlor, and a general store. Keep your eyes open for a shoe partially buried in the ground — legend holds that it belongs to Chester Goode himself, who was killed here in a gunfight!

6. Tahquamenon Falls State Park - Paradise, Michigan

A summertime paradise, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula offers endless outdoor recreation and breathtaking scenery. Needless to say, it’s one of the best places to camp in the Midwest!

There are a variety of RV-friendly sites at this state park, all with 30-amp or 50-amp hookups and access to showers: Hemlock Loop and Portage campground, along the river, in Lower Falls Modern Campground , are the best. Access over 40 miles of hiking and biking trails, plus 13 inland lakes and the spectacular Upper and Lower Falls right from camp.

7. Ozark Mountain Springs RV Park - Mountain View, Missouri

Ozark Mountain Springs RV Park.

At the RV park, the shaded, level, big rig-friendly sites feature full hookups and Wi-Fi. There’s also a state-of-the-art clubhouse and large facilities to accommodate meetings, rallies, or other events.

8. Berlin RV Park & Campground - Millersburg, Ohio

Tucked into north-central Ohio’s famed Amish country, you’ll find one of the most scenic Midwest campgrounds. Berlin RV Park features spacious sites with full hookups and Wi-Fi and a truly unique feature: being able to watch horses and buggies pass by! The park also has a playground, activity pavilion, and an herb garden guests are welcome to use.

Downtown Berlin, with some of the best furniture and antiques shopping in the country, is less than 10 minutes away.

22 Best Midwest Campgrounds

Midwest Living's experienced editors create best-in-class travel, lifestyle, food, home and garden content you won't find anywhere else. We're loudly, proudly Midwestern, and we're passionate about helping our audience explore and create through award-winning storytelling.

After a full season of visiting Midwest campgrounds, we picked these as the best for scenery and amenities.

Camp like a star

There's a certain community that flourishes within the grill smoke of a campground. Kids shout as they toss footballs among the trees. Old friends reconnect under starry skies. Spend even one night at the 24 campgrounds we've identified as the Midwest's best, and you start to see the appeal. Keeping in mind the popularity of RVs, we researched hundreds of RV campgrounds in the region, visited dozens and interviewed avid campers in all 12 states. We picked our favorites in categories for scenery and for amenities-then crowned 5 "supercampgrounds" that have an amazing combination of both, including Hayward KOA in Hayward, Wisconsin ( pictured ). Click ahead to see our picks!

Simply the best

These "supercampgrounds" scored big for the ultimate combo of creature comforts and unbeatable views. Click or tap to the next slides for details on each.

* Hayward KOA in Hayward, Wisconsin * Brown County State Park in Indiana * Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton, Indiana (pictured) * Eugene T. Mahoney State Park in Ashland, Nebraska * Grand Marais Recreation Area in Grand Marais, Minnesota

Nashville, Indiana: Brown County State Park

Popular year-round, this massive outdoor playground has 20 cabins that sleep 8, plus 118 RV sites.

What we love: The Little Gem Restaurant, known for pork tenderloin sandwiches and fried buttermilk biscuits covered in cinnamon and sugar; 18 miles of hiking trails; and 25 miles of mountain bike trails.

Plus: Clean restrooms, a well-stocked camp store and a rec center with an Olympic-size pool. Book cabins through the on-site Abe Martin Lodge. They go fast. camp.in.gov for RVs; indianainns.com for cabins

Hayward, Wisconsin: Hayward KOA

Remember when kids ran off in the morning to play and didn't come back until they heard calls for dinner? That happens among these 28 wooded acres, which include 157 RV sites and 31 cabins.

What we love: Themed weekends, including a popular chocolate weekend (with a chocolate slide!); a water park; free s'mores; outdoor movies; and DJ dances.

Plus: Families rent kayaks and inner tubes to explore the Namekagon River then carpool-shuttle back-all part of the community that thrives here. haywardkoa.com

Chesterton, Indiana: Indiana Dunes State Park

Towering sand dunes give this federally protected area its name, but they're only one reason to spend a few days along the Lake Michigan shore. Marshes draw migrating birds, and 16 miles of hiking trails weave through woods and across sand.

What we love: Spotless campsites (including 136 RV sites); a nature center with hands-on areas for kids; and clean, newer, spacious bathrooms. A huge value just 45 miles east of downtown Chicago. in.gov/dnr

Ashland, Nebraska: Eugene T. Mahoney State Park

You'll barely make it through the entrance before the kids beg to hit the outdoor water park's water slides, wave pool and zero-depth zone. The scent of honeysuckle floats over the mini golf course, and pedal boats dock near the Lakeside Campground, which has free Wi-Fi.

What we love: Trail rides, arts and crafts nights, and theater performances. nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com

Grand Marais, Minnesota: Grand Marais Recreation Area

If you're looking to blend fine dining, great shopping and a quiet Lake Superior shore, you'll find it here along the famed North Shore. With 300 total sites, this city campground has pull-through spots with water, electric and sewer hookups; quaint tent sites snuggle up to the cobblestone Lake Superior shoreline.

What we love: Campers can walk three blocks into downtown for some of the best cuisine on the North Shore then return to campsites that cost less than dinner for two. grandmaraisrecreationarea.com

Natural wonders: Quiet fishing coves, standout hiking, wildlife viewing and pretty vistas set the scene for relaxation at these campgrounds: * Sibley State Park Campground in New London, Minnesota (pictured) * Blue Bell Campground in Custer State Park, Custer, South Dakota * Canning Creek Cove Park in Council Grove, Kansas * Dolliver Memorial State Park Campground in Lehigh, Iowa * Hueston Woods State Park Campground in College Corner, Ohio * Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park Campground, Middle Brook, Missouri * Lewis and Clark Recreation Area in Yankton, South Dakota * P.J. Hoffmaster State Park Campground in Norton Shores, Michigan * Platte River Campground in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Honor, Michigan * Wilderness State Park Campground in Carp Lake, Michigan * Silver Dollar City Campground in Branson, Missouri * Starved Rock State Park Campground in Utica, Illinois

Entertainment central You'll find cool ways to spend your days at these family-friendly spots: * Elkhart County/Middlebury KOA in Middlebury, Indiana * Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park Campground in Mandan, North Dakota * Lighthouse Point and Camper Village at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio * Mount Rushmore KOA/Palmer Gulch Resort in Hill City, South Dakota * Smokey Hollow Campground in Lodi, Wisconsin

Carp Lake, Michigan: Wilderness State Park Campground

The breeze off the straits keeps bugs away from campers admiring Lake Michigan and exploring this 26-mile stretch of mostly rocky shoreline.

What we love: Many of the 250 modern sites have the most dramatic water views of any campground in Michigan; visitors spot eagles, osprey and bears along 20 miles of hiking trails.

Plus: They offer nine lakeside cabins on lanes open only to people staying there. michigan.gov/dnr

Middlebrook, Missouri: Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park Campground

A 2005 reservoir breach that wiped out the original campground spurred the construction of an even better one. Nestled at the foot of Goggins Mountain, the more than 70 spacious sites and cozy cabins make a home base for explorers wading and swimming in the "shut-ins," named for the water from the East Fork of the Black River running through narrow gaps between boulders.

What we love: A boardwalk leads to the shut-ins, and wooded trails snake along the river.

Plus: Campers gather in an amphitheater on Saturdays to learn about the wildlife in these St. Francois Mountains. mostateparks.com

Utica, Illinois: Starved Rock State Park Campground

A disclaimer: This campground isn't inside the outstanding state park (pictured), a surprise to some campers we met, but it's still a gem to us.

What we love: The 133 secluded, spacious sites, wooded surroundings, camp stores, peaceful setting.

Plus: If you want a break from grill cooking, Utica has restaurants and award-winning wineries, plus ice cream places to end your days on a sweet note. dnr.illinois.gov

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Honor, Michigan: Platte River Campground

Locals try to keep this place a secret, but the word is definitely out about the superclean natural playground that's popular with paddlers. They savor this clear, sandy-bottomed stretch of the Platte River where it empties into Lake Michigan.

What we love: Ranger-led programs and towering pines. nps.gov/slbe

New London, Minnesota: Sibley State Park Campground

It's a potent lure for campers: the combination of Lake Andrew, hands-on nature programs, an expanded interpretive center and wooded rolling terrain two hours west of the Twin Cities.

What we love: Mount Tom, an observation tower providing 50-mile views, seasonal guided walks, free I Can Fish clinics with rods and tackle, and canoe and kayak rentals. mndnr.gov

Branson, Missouri: Silver Dollar City Campground

The Ozark woodlands blanket this immaculately kept location near the theme park known for its rides, hearty restaurants and on-site artisans.

What we love: The 39 cabins range from rustic to posh; stylish tile lines walls and floors in public bathrooms. RV and tent camping sites are available as well. A free shuttle runs to Silver Dollar City.

Plus: Deer, turkeys and armadillos wander out from the woods. silverdollarcity.com

Custer State Park, Custer, South Dakota: Blue Bell Campground

One of eight campgrounds in this sprawling state park, Blue Bell offers family-size showering/dressing rooms near 30 RV sites, plus 23 cabins near the Blue Bell General store. Campers come for incomparable Black Hills scenery: granite spires (pictured), pine forests, meadows and bison.

What we love: Hay rides trundle through the park, and evening educational programs share more details about a landscape that feels downright spiritual. gfp.sd.gov

Council Grove, Kansas: Canning Creek Cove Park

Cradled by the Flint Hills, pretty Council Grove Lake (pictured) welcomes campers eager to hike, boat, fish and bird-watch as well as those curious to see the surrounding prairie.

What we love: Hills and limestone outcroppings rise from the 40-mile shoreline, and 49 campsites, many of them wooded, offer plenty of elbowroom.

Plus: Explorers can head 35 miles north along State-177 to Manhattan's Flint Hills Discovery Center or south along the Flint Hills Scenic Byway to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, which has an 1881 ranch home and guided bus tours of the grasslands. recreation.gov

Mandan, North Dakota: Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park Campground

History buffs know this campground is much more than a place to spend the night; it's a wonderful relic, with Native American earth lodges, a military fort and Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer's home.

What we love: Guides lead groups through all the sites while sharing stories and heart-tugging details of life on the windswept prairie.

Plus: A cluster of cottonwood trees and the Missouri River give this quiet campground with 57 RV sites a pretty view. Yurts, tipis and cabins available. parkrec.nd.gov

Sandusky, Ohio: Lighthouse Point and Camper Village at Cedar Point

Once you've spent the day taking in the rides at one of the world's best amusement parks, walk back to one of 145 RV sites, 64 cottages and 92 cabins set between the Lake Erie shore and the park.

What we love: RV sites offer full electric, water, sewer and cable hookups (a rarity), and cottages (mobile homes outfitted to look woodsy) overlook the lake.

Plus: Guests get discounted tickets and early admission to the park. cedarpoint.com

Hill City, South Dakota: Mount Rushmore KOA/Palmer Gulch Resort

A row of shops designed to look like an Old West Main Street sets the tone at this sprawling resort. You'll find 290 sparsely shaded, chummy RV sites, but the view and the activities make up for it.

What we love: Two pools, a water park, stables, gold panning, four-wheeler rentals and views of Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) are just some of the reasons families come here to unwind in happy busyness. palmergulch.com

Lehigh, Iowa: Dolliver Memorial State Park Campground

This rural spot in northern Iowa is not big—only 23 RV sites—but they all overlook the pretty Des Moines River and stand within easy reach of a stately Civilian Conservation Corps lodge.

What we love: Sandstone cliffs, wooded hiking and quiet fishing combine for a perfect get-away-from-it-all backdrop. iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com

Middlebury, Indiana: Elkhart County/ Middlebury KOA

A recreation room, complete with turquoise booths, a pool table and ice cream socials, sets a fun tone in Amish Country.

What we love: : Campers at 93 RV sites and in 13 cabins take advantage of free Wi-Fi, pedal boat rentals, badminton, basketball, sand volleyball, mini golf, plus 2.5 miles of nature trails. koa.com

Norton Shores, Michigan: P.J. Hoffmaster State Park Campground

The ecosystems of the Lake Michigan shoreline shine at this roomy, 297-site campground, which stands among huge beech, hemlock and maple trees along the backside of lakefront sand dunes.

What we love: Summertime nature walks help kids spot wildlife; hikers enjoy a 15-minute jaunt along a creek and through a forest that leads to the beach.

Plus: Campers who crave a little civilization appreciate the ice cream stand 5 miles down the road and the stores and restaurants in nearby Grand Haven. michigan.gov/dnr

Yankton, South Dakota: Lewis and Clark Recreation Area

If a campground known for its laid-back landscape can feel "put together," Lewis and Clark pulls if off beautifully.

What we love: Manicured landscaping, modern bathrooms with locking doors instead of shower curtains and solid playground equipment reveal careful management.

Plus: Many people come here to go boating, but campers at the 409 RV sites and 17 cabins also take advantage of the beaches, disc golf and 4.1-mile paved trail along the Missouri River. gfp.sd.gov

Lodi, Wisconsin: Smokey Hollow Campground

An enormous motorized shopping cart and Cinderella's pumpkin-style coach whiz kids around this wooded campground, and that's just some of the offerings you'll find.

What we love: A water-balloon war, Segway clinics (lessons followed by quick jaunts) and weekly Friday night fish frys complement the more standard activities.

Plus: Travelers can choose from 100 RV sites snuggled into the woods or nearly two dozen other kinds of lodgings, including yurts, covered wagons, cabins and gazebos. smokeyhollowcampground.com

College Corner, Ohio: Hueston Woods State Park Campground

North of Cincinnati, neat-as-a pin sites flourish amid old-growth forests and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails weaving past waterfalls. Sailboats glide across Acton Lake while kids splash along the sandy swimming beach.

What we love: Campers picnic in the shadow of a covered bridge, tour a restored Pioneer Farm museum and join fossil-hunting expeditions before curling up by fire rings at the 250 sites with electricity, 3 cabins and 37 cottages. ohiodnr.gov

What makes it special:  In the greater Indianapolis area (45 minutes), you won’t find a better camping option.  Also, rarely do you find the majority of sites to be directly on the waterfront.  There is a beautiful bridge crossing the White River to take guests to the Strawtown Koteewi Park , an 800 acre park that includes eight miles of trails, equestrian opportunities and a treetop ropes course.  You can even be picked up at the campsite by a local canoe company to take a canoe trip on the White River.  This is a great option for a quiet stay or for an adventure!

The 32 site RV campground makes up just a small part of this 300 acre park bordering a nearly 6,000 acre lake established in 2001.  Reservable sites between mid-March to mid-November give those lucky enough to stay access to a variety of outdoor activities as well as prime access to neighboring Mammoth Cave National Park.

What makes it special:   The small size of the campground as it compares to the access to birding, travels, beach, and fishing is really special and unique.  Several of the campsites back up to the lake and all sites are surrounded by trees and natural features.  The relatively untouched nature and limited size of this campground gives visitors access to beautiful sunsets and common wildlife sightings.

Three Must-See Places to Take Your RV in the Midwest

The midwestern portion of the United States might bring to mind images of cornfields and ranch land. Although the Midwest is undoubtedly a critical contributor to the agricultural health of the US, there is far more to this vast swath of land than one might imagine.

Today, we’ll take a look at the top three must-see places to take your RV in the Midwest that showcase the true beauty of this part of America.

The Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin is a beautiful state known across the country for its love of suds and cheese. Undoubtedly, no trip to this dairy-rich state would be complete without stopping in for a fresh bag of cheese curds.

However, more than simply a place to grab some cheddar, Wisconsin is home to an array of beautiful landscapes and family-friendly fun.

One must-see Wisconsin destination is the Wisconsin Dells , nicknamed the Waterpark Capital of the World. In fact, the largest outdoor waterpark in the nation is located in the Wisconsin Dells, Noah’s Ark Waterpark.

The Dells are home to an incredible number of both indoor and outdoor waterparks, many of which are interconnected. From lazy rivers to high-speed waterslides, plan to spend at least a portion of your visit getting wet.

While the Wisconsin Dells have earned much of their fame for their incredible number of waterparks, there is plenty for the nature lover to see and do here as well.

One outdoor activity that is a must-try is a ride on the Ducks . Designed during World War II for use by the Army, these half-land, half-amphibian vehicles will guide you across land and water to see the Lower Dells Glacial Park. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy the incredible sights of the natural landscape while you revel in the fun of driving straight from a riverbank into the water. There is nothing quite like a ride on the Ducks.

After a busy day of waterside adventures, take some time to visit downtown Wisconsin Dells . Within the city’s center, you’ll find ample shopping, entertainment, and restaurant choices. Whether you are a couple on a romantic getaway or a multi-generational family looking for fun, you will be able to plan a whole day enjoying this bustling town.

With so many activities, the only thing left to plan is where to park your RV during your visit to the Dells. The good news is that the Wisconsin Dells has no shortage of places that are RV-friendly. You can choose from an array of RV parks with all the amenities you need, such as full hook-ups, 30 or 50 amp service, dump stations, water, and more.

The “U.P.”

If nature is calling your name, then a trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula is an absolute must. Commonly referred to simply as the U.P., this peninsula is packed full of wilderness adventures. Here, you’ll find majestic lakeshores, a remote national park, and the incredible Mackinac Bridge.

Resting near Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron, the U.P. offers a vast amount of trails, vistas, and shorelines to explore.

Start your visit with a trip to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the oldest National Lakeshore in the US! Here, you’ll enjoy incredible towering sandstone cliffs, crystal clear water, countless miles of trails, and the peaceful calm of woodlands.

Next up, take a day trip to the Isle Royale National Park . This national park ranks as one of the least visited in the US, but it is not for a lack of beauty. Instead, this remote park is a rugged wilderness that can only be reached by boat, ferry, or seaplane. There is not a single car to be found on this island park, but there are worlds of adventure. Scuba dive to a sunken shipwreck, climb wilderness trails and see the night sky like you never have before.

If you are still ready to experience more of nature, take a trip to Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michigan. Enjoy the incredible views of the gushing falls that have a massive 200 feet across with a nearly 50-foot drop into the river below.

Finally, no trip to the U.P would be complete without a ride over to Mackinac Island . Located between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan, this island is a vacation hotspot known for its lack of cars and old-timey feel. Get around by bicycle, carriage, or by foot and explore the numerous historical landmarks, quaint neighborhood streets, and lakefront. Be sure to grab a piece of famous fudge before heading back to the mainland.

Regardless of what you opt to do while there, the U.P. is chock full of RV-friendly campgrounds that will make the perfect base camp for your daily adventures.

Lake of the Ozarks

Deep in the heart of the Midwest lies a hidden gem — the Lake of the Ozarks . This lake offers boating, fishing, golfing, and outdoor activities galore.

Not only that, but the lake is surrounded by communities featuring the best in dining, entertainment, and shopping.

Start your trip with a visit to the Lake of the Ozarks state park, the largest in Missouri! This park boasts 85 miles of shoreline, including numerous public beaches and ample hiking, biking, and boating opportunities.

Next up, plan a day of exploring at Stark Caverns. During a guided tour, you will set your eyes on unique geological formations, Native American artifacts, ancient bear beds, and more. Choose to take part in the black light adventure and discover a wholly different underground world of fluorescent minerals.

Finally, be sure to take some time away from the water and caves to visit the neighboring towns where you can enjoy delicious waterfront meals, find the perfect souvenirs, and even stop in for a wine tasting.

As you enjoy your time on the lake, finding a place to rest at night will be a breeze. The Lake of the Ozarks hosts a vast number of RV-friendly campgrounds , with every amenity you could want. Be sure to plan ahead as this is a popular summer destination.

5 Midwest RV Trips Not to Be Missed

By Interact RV Support

Camping brings families together , and RV camping takes that closeness and makes it mobile for even more variety and fun.

There are many campgrounds vying for your attention, especially in the Midwest. That’s why we’ve gone to the trouble of combing through Midwest RV trips to find the ones that are especially can’t-miss.

Consider this ground zero for your Midwest RV trip planning. Read on to discover the next place for you to park your vehicle and lay your head.

5 Midwest RV Destinations  : Best RV Trips In Midwest

These five campgrounds and parks offer stimulation to every member of the family, whether your preference is hunting, fishing, swimming, or just relaxing. Grab the  RV parts  you need to update your camper, and then take a look for yourself.

1. Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park Campground in Middlebrook, Missouri

This park is somewhat inappropriately named because the last thing you’ll feel like when you visit is a shut-in. But that’s not what Johnson’s is referring to. This park’s shut-ins are the rivers that wind through it and provide excellent hiking trails.

This campground is located at the foot of Goggins Mountain and next to the East Fork River. It has plenty of modern amenities for your hookup, with premium electricity and well-appointed facilities.

2. Wilderness State Park Campground in Carp Lake, Michigan  : Best Camping In Midwest

Some of the fun of camping is discovering the variety of terrain that the Midwest has to offer. The Wilderness State Park Campground is a prime example.

There are 250 sites for camping at Wilderness. The park includes 26 miles of rocky shoreline, with plenty of nooks and crannies for exploring.

There is also plenty of wildlife here. Osprey, eagles, and bears (oh my!) abound, so be on the lookout as you hike.

3. Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton, Indiana

You might not associate the state of Indiana with beautiful beaches. Indiana Dunes State Park will change that.

While the park is a state park, the land it’s on is federally protected. As a result, it is well preserved, with thick vegetation, lots of bird-watching opportunities, and those slowly moving sands on the coast of Lake Michigan.

Plus, if you get a hankering for city living, you can always travel 45 miles west to visit Chicago.

4. Hayward KOA in Hayward, Wisconsin

There are over 150 campsites for RVs at the Hayward KOA. Since the grounds are so well set up for RVs, Hayward has  themed weekends and activities  specially designed to accommodate families and visitors.

These attractions include a water park, outdoor movies, dances complete with DJs, and free s’mores. What’s not to love?

5. Canning Creek Cove Park in Council Grove, Kansas

Canning Creek Cove Park (try saying that five times fast) is a perfect endpoint for this list because of the tranquility and communion with nature it offers. The park’s 40 miles of shoreline offers hiking opportunities as well as boating, fishing, and bird-watching spots.

CCCP has more than 3,000 acres to explore, and if you need some guidance, there is a bus tour that takes you right through the grasslands and into a 19th century home on the grounds.

Moving Right Along

We hope you’ve found a few  RV trips in Midwest to get you excited about your next mobile vacation. This part of the country is vast and has a lot to offer.

Imagine having your favorite RV navigation apps that offer suggested routes and help you find state and national parks and public campgrounds along the way. That’s precisely what RV trip-planning apps do. With campground reviews from fellow travelers at hand, every decision becomes more manageable as it is based on real experiences.

A road trip doesn’t need to burn a hole in your pocket. The beauty of these awesome apps lies in their ability to guide users towards free camping sites or cheaper alternatives like public campgrounds compared to private RV parks for RV Camping only. Plus, they keep tabs on gas stations en route, ensuring fuel stops don’t become financial nightmares.

No more worrying about unexpected detours or sudden weather changes affecting your journey. With live updates via GPS-based directions right within these simple yet practical applications, a smooth ride throughout is almost guaranteed, irrespective of where you’re headed next – an overnight parking spot or a new city exploration.  RV-specific GPS is a plus for travelers who must avoid low clearances on overpasses or tight turns.

Last but certainly not least are those mundane maintenance tasks that come part and parcel with the fun-filled RV life pro experience. RV Trip Wizard , among other great apps, provides checklists for routine RV maintenance checks so nothing gets missed while living this exciting lifestyle on wheels.

The best RV travel app for your needs can differ based on what you’re looking for in an application. However, a few applications have become popular for their broad selection of features and user-friendly interfaces.  I’ve checked out three of them and studied reviews for you, so you don’t have to!

We’ll compare three widely-used options that make traveling by RV or car a breeze: RV Life Pro , Togo RV , and RV Trip Wizard .

RV Life Trip Wizard – RV GPS and Campgrounds

A favorite among full-time RVers, RV Life , provides an all-in-one solution for planning your RV trip. It offers RV Safe GPS, which means the best route suggestions tailored to the size and weight of your vehicle, ensuring safe travels no matter where you go.  With this app, you won’t have to worry about your route or the time to arrive at your destination.

This handy app covers everything from finding RV parks and gas stations to locating nearby RV dump sites.  No more worrying about whether you fit under that highway overpass!  RV Life handles that!

RV Trip Wizard isn’t just an RV navigation map, either.  One of the reasons it is much loved among full-time RVers is that it has so many features beyond just the map.  One of the most popular features is the Points of Interest Map which includes over 57,000 points of interest for you to scope out before adding them to your route.

One of my favorite features of this app is that it even helps you keep track of maintenance schedules for your vehicle.  We can all use a little help with that fun chore!

And finally, you can find ideal RV parks and campgrounds as you travel.  With over 20,000 campgrounds in the app and the ability to rank your memberships in travel clubs, you’ll know which park will give you the best value after a quick look into the app.  In addition, it conveniently locates dump sites, gas stations, and prices en route.

RVLife comes with a 7-day trial to give you ample opportunity to decide if it’s the right fit for you.  After seven days, the cost is approximately $60 per year.  A few nights at a lower-cost camping sight will quickly take care of that $60, making this a great value if you travel often enough.

A demo version comes with more limited capabilities for those who need more than seven days to decide if this is the right app.

Next up?   Togo RV !  This handy app receives high praise from fellow RVers.  It not only aids with trip planning but also includes maintenance reminders and checklists, ensuring that you are road ready at all times!

Togo also has an Overnight RV Parking app, so if you love the RV app, you may just love the Overnight Parking app as well.  Take note that Togo RV is not a free app, but it does offer a free 7-day trial, so if you don’t love it, it won’t cost you a penny!

I love that this app provides access to reviews from fellow travelers on various campgrounds, making it easier to choose the right campground for you when you’re busy living out the dream of being a full-time traveler or an “RV life pro.”

Some of the free features included with Togo are  Movile RV Repair Directory, which will help you find someone to repair your RV or car while you travel.  The Tire Finder lets you enter your tire specs and find the best replacements for your budget.  Pre-made RV checklists are available to get you safely on the road without forgetting any vital details!

You can also enter your vehicle specs and receive recall alerts, and maybe my favorite feature and the best part of this app is the Roadpass University, which is excellent for a new RV owner!

Togo RV is an excellent tool with high ratings among travelers.  Of course, besides the above options, it offers a campground search feature, which includes information about state parks and free camping sites throughout North America.

AllStays Camp & RV App

Last but certainly not least is AllStays Camp & RV , known for its comprehensive database covering everything from public campgrounds with RV sites to overnight parking lots for smaller vehicles.  This robust tool becomes indispensable whether one plans to stay at a state park or search out free camping sites and parking lots (Hello Cracker Barrel!) during road trips across the Midwest.

I feel safe in saying that AllStays is worth your time.  This app has been the #1 Selling, #1 Ranked, and #1 Reviewed Camping App for over 144 Months, with 4.5k reviews in the iOS app store and an overall ranking of 4.6 out of 5.

AllStays Camp & RV App is one of my favorite apps because, although it is simple, it is effective.  I love that it allows searches based on specific requirements like pet-friendly sites or overnight parking facilities.

Midwest State Park Adventures makes a great travel companion or gift. Some of the best travel writers in the Midwest collaborated to put this book together, which covers 12 Midwest States and hundreds of state parks.

And I, the Hip Grandma, wrote contributed by writing the Michigan chapter!

You can click on the photo to order on Amazon or click HERE to learn more and order a signed copy directly from me.

After 13 years of use and development, AllStays has the most campgrounds listed (37,000 in the United States and Canada) and includes FREE overnight parking options.  The filters on this app are excellent.  You can filter sites fairly easily by features such as pet-friendly sites, laundry availability, boat launch, toilet styles, swimming pool, and so on!

But my favorite feature of this app is that some of the data is stored on your phone, making it useable even when driving in and out of wifi or service areas.  Nothing is more frustrating than driving out of signal, losing your internet connection, and the ability to search as you travel.

Notice to Android users:  Allstays Camp and RV does not have an app for you.  However, you can open your browser and log in to use the same features, which is a bit of a drawback if you have your heart set on an app. However, it makes this app useable on any device, including your tablet, computer, or laptop!

Consider Your Cost

When considering cost, RV Life Trip Wizard offers a limited-feature free version and a premium subscription. Togo RV comes with an annual fee. Allstays Pro is the least expensive of the three we’ve discussed here at 34.99 per year or 4.99 per month.

Any way you look at it, the ease these apps bring into your car or RV traveling experience often justifies their price tag.

Remember, no single application will meet every need perfectly. So, please look at each app’s features and consider the most important features before purchasing your perfect companion app.

  The Gist:

Awesome RV travel apps like RV Life Trip Wizard, Togo RV, and Allstays Camp & RV Road Maps offer unique features tailored to your road trip needs. From campground searches to maintenance reminders and route planning, these tools simplify the journey. Consider cost and personal preferences when choosing your perfect digital companion.

Add-on Popular RV Travel Apps

Now that we’ve talked about adding a GPS and Trip planning app, let’s talk about a few apps that don’t do it “all” but do their own thing really well! Here are my favorite stand-alone apps that I wouldn’t travel without!

The user-friendly RV Parky app assists in locating RV dump stations and potential roadside attractions.  It’s FREE, making it a great starter app!

Before I travel, and sometimes even after, you’ll find me cruising through TripAdvisor .  You’ll find places to go, things to do, and places to eat and stay in this handy free app.

TripAdvisor is location-specific, so enter your destination and see lists of all of the great things a destination has to offer and honest, up-to-date user reviews from people who have been there!   TripAdvisor is a great way to get genuine reviews from real people before wasting your time and efforts.

When I need a place to stay, and the car or the RV just isn’t going to cut it, I use Hotels.com .  You can search along your route and see prices at a glance, discounted from the walk-in rate.  This app has come in incredibly handy when I need a room at the last minute.

Be aware, though, if you make a reservation through this app and, for some reason, change your mind on arrival, refunds are not easy.  The hotel will immediately tell you to take it up with Hotels.com, and you may wait more than a week for your refund.

This handy little app called Roadside Attractions is my personal favorite app for finding quirky roadside stops!  I have used it for everything from finding a spooky shoe tree on a back country road to finding the EPIC Headquarters, the most fantastic work campus that seems more like a theme park than a business.

I truly love this great app!  It can turn your RV road trip from meh to magnificent! There is a small one-time cost to use the app, but it has been more than worth it for me!

iExit is a nifty little app and just the thing to help you find a bite to eat, a gallon of gas, or a restroom as you travel.  Simply open the iExit app, which will use GPS to locate you on the Interstate, then give you a list of the upcoming exits and what you’ll find there, including fuel prices, truck stops, rest areas, and fast food restaurants!  I love this little app!

If you like to hear the story behind a story, this app is for you. Download the Talking Trail App , and when you are within a specified distance of a Talking Point, the app will notify you. A quick click on the map will give you a narrated story of the landmark you’re visiting. If you are a leisure traveler with time to learn and hear stories, you’ll LOVE Talking Trail.

Tips for Choosing an RV Travel App

Embarking on your next RV trip with the right app can transform your travel experience. Consider what you want when choosing the perfect app to accompany your RV journey.

The first step is recognizing what you need from an RV travel app. Are you seeking a straightforward navigation tool like Google Maps , or do you require more specific features such as finding RV parks, planning safe routes, locating gas stations, and even providing handy checklists? Knowing what’s essential will help streamline your choices.

User reviews and ratings provide invaluable insights into how well each option performs.  I certainly don’t know it all, and although I have used all of these apps, many others have also and may be able to answer your specific questions in a review.  Quickly browsing feedback on platforms like Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store will give you a balanced perspective.

RV apps come in different pricing models: free versions with optional paid upgrades (like Togo RV), full-featured premium ones (such as RV Trip Wizard), and freemiums that offer limited functionalities unless upgraded – select one that fits your budget constraints and ensures value for what you spend.

Of course, I recommend you try different options and compare their features whenever possible. Many of these apps offer free trial periods that will let you get a hands-on feel for their offerings firsthand and commitment-free. This practical exposure helps determine if a particular software ticks all of your boxes effectively, saving you time and effort.

When choosing the best RV travel app, identify your needs first. Consider user reviews and ratings for insight into performance. Analyze features and usability to ensure it caters to all aspects of RV life within your budget. Don’t forget a test drive before committing.

FAQs in Relation to Best Rv Travel App

Absolutely! Apps like Roadtrippers and RV Trip Wizard are explicitly designed to help plan your RV route, including stops at campgrounds and attractions.

Yes, the comprehensive features of RV Trip Wizard, such as custom routing, campground information, and cost estimation, make it a valuable tool for any RVer.

Surely. Hipcamp is similar to Airbnb but focuses on unique camping experiences. It lists thousands of campsites across the US.

You can use travel planning apps like The Dyrt or AllStays that provide details about campgrounds, gas stations, and rest stops, along with user reviews to help you plan your journey efficiently.
