Kindle (2022 release)

travel gadgets 2022 uk

Amazon’s own-brand e-readers have been around for a while now, but this 2022 release will ignite jealousy from your fellow travellers - and for a very good reason. This Kindle is the lightest and most compact to date, making it perfect for diving into the latest good read while you’re on the go.

The ultimate companion for the bookworm jetsetter, it is small enough to fit in any crossbody bag to offer an entire library at your fingertips for the entire trip. No longer will you need to choose between a book and that extra pair of shoes as whether you have the chance to dive into your most recent literary downloads or not, the featherlight 158g won’t make too much of a dent in those already tight baggage restrictions.

It measures under 16 x 11 x 0.8cm with a 6” display and a built-in light so you can continue to flick between the pages even when lighting is low. You can use it totally wirelessly with no need to connect to a computer and the 16GB gives you the option to download thousands of books to enjoy with no WiFi necessary. Battery life is impressive too and should last throughout your adventures. The brand says up to six weeks but this will be less depending on how usage and if you employ the use of the illumination. Set-up and navigating the system couldn’t be easier - even for the less technology adept among us and recharging is through USB-C so the same cable as the newest iPhones and Android devices.

The cherry on top of the cake is the eco-conscious construction where this Kindle is made from 75 per cent post-consumer recycled plastics. This sustainable approach is continued into the packaging too with wood-fibre-based material and entirely recyclable boxes used.

Pocketalk S Voice Translator

travel gadgets 2022 uk

Gone are the days of awkward hand gestures and elaborate games of charades to order your dinner or ask for directions on holiday as the Pocketalk S device can translate 82 languages bi-directionally - all at the touch of a button.

This pocket-sized device also has a text-to-translate camera which instantly recognises and translates, making this a perfect gadget for helping you explore a new city. Utilising the best translation engines in the world, Pocketalk S ensures accurate translations and helps create the best experience by picking up localised dialects and slang.

The Pocketalk also comes with an embedded SIM that provides a two-year mobile data plan so you can use the translator in over 130 countries without needing to rely on Wi-Fi or your precious mobile data. Its small size and lightweight characteristics means it is perfect for carrying around, wherever you’re going.

iBlockCube Worldwide Travel Adapter

travel gadgets 2022 uk

If you’re anything like us, at least once during every holiday packing process you wish that every country used the same sockets to make life easier. Even if that’s not possible, the iBlockCube travel adaptor takes away the need to buy several adaptors for different countries and devices as it works in over 150 countries including the US, EU, UK, Australia and much of Asia.

The travel adaptor has four plugs which can be accessed by the multiple sliders and lock buttons on the side. It also has three fast-charging USB-A ports and two Type C ports meaning you don’t have to pack hundreds of plugs and adaptors for your next trip as you can charge up to six devices simultaneously and quickly.

Trtl Pillow Original

travel gadgets 2022 uk

Whilst long car, plane or train journeys are rarely the best part of a holiday, they can definitely be made more comfortable (and therefore enjoyable) with the Trtl Pillow Original. The Trtl pillow has a soft fleece feel and contains internal support which keeps your head upright while sleeping so you don’t end up straining your neck or falling asleep in awkward positions.

What we loved most about this pillow was its compact size compared to other travel pillows on the market. The Trtl easily folds up so it is no bigger than a scarf and fits neatly into the travel bag provided. It is also fully adjustable so you can place the internal support mechanism against your neck where it suits you best. The velcro attachment then allows you to decide how tight you want the pillow wrapped.

Aeropress Go Coffee Maker

travel gadgets 2022 uk

For those early morning starts, whether it’s to catch a plane or begin your morning commute, nothing beats a cup of coffee. The AeroPress Go ensures we are never without your trusted cup of coffee no matter how jam packed your bags are. This portable coffee maker measures a mere 14cm x 10cm x 10cm and comes with its own travel mug that all parts of the product can fit into.

The coffee maker is simple to use with only 6 components including a scooper, stirrer, 350 filter papers and a plunger. Not only is the product an ideal travel size, but it is also highly efficient as it brews up to 237ml (standard mug size) of American-style coffee per pressing - and all in just one minute. It can also brew espresso style coffee which can be used in lattes and cappuccinos.

Urbanears Boo Headphones

travel gadgets 2022 uk

As sustainability continues to be at the forefront of many of our minds whilst shopping, we want products that not only look good, but also do good. Branding the slogan “made from trash”, these headphones are made with 97 per cent recycled plastics such as water bottles and air conditioning units. Urbanears are currently sold in three highly on-trend colours: slightly blue, almost green and charcoal black.

The headphones provide up to thirty hours of playtime, 4.5 hours from the headphones and 25.5 hours from the wireless case, meaning your headphones won’t run out of battery whilst you’re having a silent disco for one. The headphones are also dual noise filtering so it is easier to take that work call no matter how loud your surroundings.

Russell Hobbs Travel Iron

travel gadgets 2022 uk

Let’s face it, no matter how well we try and pack our clothes into our suitcase using all sorts of folds and Tetris-style positioning, they always inevitably end up creased and crumpled within the first few days of the holiday. That’s why a travel iron is an absolute must and this Russell Hobbs Travel Iron is sturdy, good quality and budget friendly.

This iron is perfectly compact and lightweight, at only 0.36kg, meaning it will fit easily into your luggage or travel bag. Despite its small size it can hold an impressive 80ml of water and features a stainless steel soleplate allowing your ironing experience to be quick and smooth. The variable steam features help remove even the most stubborn of creases so it is a great addition for business trips.

Colgate Hum Brush

travel gadgets 2022 uk

It can be a hassle packing your electric toothbrush alongside all the other electronic equipment you’re taking when going on holiday. But, if you can’t live without it, then the Colgate Hum Brush is the perfect addition to your toiletries bag. This smart toothbrush connects to your phone via Bluetooth and helps you brush better as it tracks the frequency and duration of brushing, while learning your personal brushing style in order to provide tailored advice.

The Hum toothbrush is perfect for travel not only because of its small size but also the duration of the rechargeable batteries, which can last up to 10 days. The handy travel bag means it is easily stored and won’t take up unnecessary space. The starter kit also comes with an extra refill head which will help you brushing for longer.

Marshall Emberton Portable Bluetooth Speaker

travel gadgets 2022 uk

No holiday is complete without a great soundtrack and we think this retro style Marshall portable Bluetooth speaker is a great way to listen to all of your favourite tunes wherever you are in the world. With 20 hours of charge and Bluetooth 5.0, you don’t have to worry about unstable connections or charging equipment.

A perfect addition to your travel bases, this speaker weighs a mere 0.7kg and measures 68 x 76 x 160 mm. Despite its light weight and small size the Marshall speaker offers high quality, 360° multi-directional audio, meaning you don’t have to compromise on anything with this product.

What’s more is that the solid metal grille of the speaker gives it a tough enough exterior to protect it from inevitable jostling about in luggage. The Marshall is also great for those relaxing pool days as it is waterproof up to one metre.

Osprey Ultralight Drysack 12L

travel gadgets 2022 uk

If you’re looking forward to all the surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding and every other water-based activity you’ll do on holiday then the Osprey Ultralight Drysack is perfect for keeping all of your belongings dry and safe. This 12L bag is made from Ripstop nylon which means it is both tough and ultralight so won’t weigh you down as you go about your adventure.

The roll-top closure of the bag and taped seams ensures your prized possessions will be completely safe from water no matter how wet it gets. Its rectangular shape can make packing more efficient and the range of bright colours offered means your bag will stay visible even as night falls.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have a particular model you would recommend as great for travelling with? I’m a huge drone fan, and love using them, but they can come with lots of additional parts, which may not suit everyone. I’d love to hear about any “one size fits all” drone ideal for travelling with.

23 Best Travel Gadgets That'll Make Your Next Trip Even Better

For more organized, manageable, and unforgettable adventures.

The process of packing for a trip —out of town or across the globe—has, like everything, been ratcheted up a notch in the past decade. Used to be all you really had to worry about was your checked luggage , your carry-on , your travel backpacks , and whatever clothes you were packing. The techiest thing you'd pack would've been a power adapter. Now, there’s a whole high-tech world of travel gadgets occupying your suitcases and duffel bags . Sure, there's a lot of dumb stuff in the category, but there's a handful of travel gadgets that have made it all infinitely more convenient.

This cohort of travel tech is also constantly evolving, and it's increasingly becoming more portable: Handy enough to fit in your carry-ons or use on the go. Altogether, the best travel gadgets can make your trips more organized, manageable, and unforgettable—just better through and through. Hence, from tools you'll actually use during transportation or overnight stays, to devices that'll help you enjoy sceneries of a foreign land to the fullest, we recommend these 23 best travel gadgets below for every type of traveler and journey. Grab a cool instant camera , a portable WiFi hotspot , a universal power bank , or even a pair of binoculars, for example, then you'll really be bon-voyage-ing.

Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e

Px7 S2e

Everybody needs some Don't Talk to Me headphones. These from Bowers & Wilkins so comfortable and sound so great that I awarded them in our Esquire Gadget Awards .

Leica SOFORT 2 Instant Camera (Black)

Leica SOFORT 2 Instant Camera (Black)

Most polaroids are too big and bulky to really enjoy. For any vacation, you should either get a disposable camera or this brand new Leica point and shoot. It takes digital photos you can develop later, but it can also print those photos immediately onto little polaroids.

Therabody SmartGoggles

SmartGoggles

The last row of economy feels like first class when you put these on. They calm you down or put you to sleep with massages around your eyes and temples.

TUMI Just In Case Tote

Just In Case Tote

Alright, this is pushing the definition of gadget, but hear me out. This nylon tote packs down to the size of a book. Slip it into any suitcase or backpack, and forget it's there. Then—if you have extra stuff to bring home or just pack more lazily—pull it out, expand it and toss all your leftover stuff in it. It's my favorite travel hack product.

Omnicharge Omni 20+ 20000mah Power Bank

Omni 20+ 20000mah Power Bank

A portable charger on the road or in the air will prove a life-saver during those unexpected power-off moments. The Omni 20+ is one almighty power bank capable of charging your cameras, drones, laptops, and phones simultaneously, at up to 100W—one of the fastest speeds we've ever seen. It's got ports of all kinds for that matter, ready to lend a hand to all the heavy travel tech you'll bring along.

Bellroy Tech Kit

Tech Kit

We won't tell you what iPhone chargers or power adapters to get—you probably already have the best. But we do recommend a carry-on organizer for all your essential tech accessories, and Bellroy's tech kit has a place for every possible one you might need while traveling.

EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter

Universal Travel Adapter

Maybe if all these heads of state and government just agree upon one shape of input/output plug, we'd have less international conflicts? Before then, grab one—or more—of these all-in-one travel adapters to, IDK, bridge the international relations?

Garmin Instinct 2 Solar GPS Watch

Instinct 2 Solar GPS Watch

Garmin's GPS watch beats Apple's latest release —the Ultra—to the punch at something any outdoorsman can appreciate: It's solar-powered. I.e. Instinct 2 has unlimited battery life as long as you keep the lights on. And it's built like a beast with a tough-as-nails anti-water/shock/heat case. It'll keep up with wherever you're traveling to, whatever extreme activity you might partake.

Bose Alto Audio Sunglasses

Alto Audio Sunglasses

Flexing designer shades on the go is pretty much any traveler's second nature. Bose's classic-cool smart sunglasses , with open-ear audio built in to play music only for you, will save you a pair of headphones at that, while letting you stay alert (of those pickpockets, specifically).

The Nori Press

The Nori Press

An iron and an ironing board are rarely guaranteed, so plenty of fashion types carry a steamer with them. The Nori Press is the best clothes steamer out there because it combines the features of steamer and iron. It's lightweight and packable, but it can set a nice sharp crease.

furid Airtag Wallet

Airtag Wallet

There's no reason to add any extra stress to your trip. Get an AirTag wallet and save yourself from a succession of mini heart attacks.

Solis Lite Hotspot & Power Bank

Lite Hotspot & Power Bank

The last thing you need while traveling is to go offline—especially if you don't speak the local language. Thus, a WiFi hotspot , like the Solis, which is one of the easiest to operate. Just connect it to the mobile app and pay for the data, then off you go—web surfing, messaging, or any easy Internet usage. Cell carriers be damned.

JEPWCO G4 Pro Anti Spy Detector

G4 Pro Anti Spy Detector

You never know what kind of creeps are lurking at your hotel room or AirBnb. Hence, a wireless hidden device detector that'll blow the gaff on those pinhole cameras, audio bugs, and trackers. And, it doesn't look like a detective's walkie-talkie, which is cool.

Twelve South AirFly Pro

AirFly Pro

Simply put, it's a TikTok viral gadget that'll connect your AirPods —or any wireless headphones and earbuds—to the airplane TV. A godsend for your inevitably long, dull flight across the country, or the globe.

VSSL Adventure Flask Kit

Adventure Flask Kit

Shop at Amazon

More than just a drinking vessel kit for passing around whiskey to your traveling mates during a makeshift happy hour, though that's definitely its main purpose. VSSL adds an LED light, compass, and a bottle opener to the setup, so folks who are really outside adventuring can stay safe and sound, and, of course, enjoy some sips.

JBL Clip 4 Portable Speaker

Clip 4 Portable Speaker

Speaker convenient enough that you can clip onto your backpack or pant's belt loop is one that'll soundtrack your excursion. Not to mention JBL's Clip 4 is one with a durability rating of IP67 and surprisingly punchy audio.

So, when you're at the top of Lady Liberty, you're able to get a clear shot of what's happening down there through its 10x magnification—and maybe spot your long-lost cousin? Or for when you're at Yellowstone and need a HD view of what's two miles ahead before venturing farther into the wild.

useful travel gadgets 2022

Useful travel gadgets: what we’re using in 2022

From practical solutions for everyday problems to highbrow electronics for luxury on the road, here are our favoured useful travel gadgets of 2022

The modern traveller rarely leaves home without a range of gadgets and accessories. Despite years of travel and streamlining my gear, I still pack a healthy number of gadgets.

Unless I’m going completely off-grid, there are certain (usually electronic) luxuries I don’t want to be without. I want to take thousands of photographs, listen to music, watch a movie, stay in touch with my family and most importantly of all, keep track of England’s latest batting collapse (a form of self-harm I’m sure).

Therefore, the following useful travel gadgets are a mix of what I won’t travel without and what’s on my wish list for 2020.

1. World travel adapter kit

Nearly everything on this list of useful travel gadgets requires a power source, be it mains or USB. The Ceptics World Travel Adapter Kit is the perfect solution to the problem of packing seemingly boundless numbers of cables and adaptors.

The kit works in over 200 countries and territories and can charge up to five devices using only one outlet. It is surge protected and includes two US plugs, two USB ports, a fixed USB cable and six country-specific connectors.

The kit also features a smart LED voltage indicator which shows whether a 110V or 220V is present. This ensures you know which devices are compatible and can be safely connected.

2. Noise-cancelling earbuds

These are ideal for long journeys where other passengers might not always be as considerate as one might hope. I am not the most tolerant of people (I prefer animals), so these Bose QuietComfort noise-cancelling earbuds sound ideal (excuse the pun).

Bose QuietComfort Noise Cancelling Earbuds

You can turn the noise-cancelling feature up or down according to preference or, at a touch, activate a mode to hear what’s happening around you. The buds have an inline microphone and remote control to switch to calls and control other functions and come in two versions: Apple or Samsung/Android.

3. Power bank + solar charger

I carry a fair amount of electronics on treks and climbs including two cameras and a smartphone. All of these need juice, so a reliable power bank and solar charger make life easier. I use a  Powergorilla charger  and a  Falcon 21 foldable solar charger  from PowerTraveller.

Aconcagua gear list power bank

Atlas & BOots

I used my powertraveller kit on a recent climb in argentina.

Both still function in cold temperatures. The Powergorilla can charge devices up to 24Volts (such as a laptop). The solar charger is also reliable enough to charge smaller devices.

4. SteriPEN Ultra water purifier

I’ve been cavalier (or foolhardy) in the past and drunk the local iced water in India . I’ve not been hesitant about drinking from dubious water sources such as barely moving streams on camping trips in Romania and Serbia too. And I’ve nearly always regretted it.

The SteriPEN Ultra eliminates over 99.9% of bacteria in up to a litre of water in just 90 seconds, can be used up to 8,000 times and is easily rechargeable. With one charge it can treat up to 50 litres of water.

We bought one in 2014 and have used it on almost every trip since. Now I sample all the local puddle water I want.

5. Portable wifi hub

As travel writers, having unlimited global wifi at our fingertips has made our lives so much easier given the number of hours we have wasted watching progress bars advance at an excruciating pace over slow connections.

keepgo data sim against beautiful beach and sky

KeepGo offers a number of different data options for their portable WiFi hotspots and world SIM cards. We use the  Keepgo International Wifi Hotspot  to help us get online while travelling. The device generates a secure wifi connection using local 4G mobile networks in over 120 countries.

You can get 10% off any Keepgo product using this  referral link .

6. TRAVEL INSURANCE

Not technically a gadget, but it has never been more important to make sure you have reliable travel insurance . The pandemic brought in a new raft of potential medical issues and the knock-on effects have led to a rise in flight cancellations , long queues, lost baggage and strike threats.

We have used a number of travel insurance providers over the years and are now covered by SafetyWing  which offers a range of premium  travel medical insurance  built specifically for digital nomads who have health insurance coverage in their home country but need coverage abroad.

SafetyWing’s  Nomad Insurance  covers travel delays, lost checked luggage, emergency response, natural disasters and personal liability as well as medical assistance up to $250,000 USD. It can be purchased while already abroad, covers home trip visits and operates like a monthly subscription.

7. JBL Charge Bluetooth speaker

Kia and I enjoy watching a good film at day’s end, but listening from tinny laptop speakers or, worse, a muffled smartphone is not ideal – we’re not teenagers on a London bus after all.

This JBL wireless Bluetooth speaker was a leaving present from colleagues when we went on our round-the-world trip back in 2014, and it is supreme. It’s fairly lightweight and can also act as a charging station for other mobile devices.

Now there is a newly refurbished version of the JBL Charge 4 as well as a larger JBL Xtreme 3 which comes with integrated hanging hooks, a carrying strap and a built-in bottle opener! We have both.

8. Sand-free multi-mat

This may not be solving the biggest problem in the world, but it does make a day at the beach just that bit more comfortable. The CGear sand-free multi-mat uses “sand-free technology” alongside a soft but durable material to provide the ultimate beach mat.

most useful travel gadgets sand

The mat uses engineered layers of high-density weave that allows particles of sand, dirt, and dust to fall through the fabric. Because the layers are staggered, sand can only go one way (down), not back up.

9. Luggage scales

Excess baggage fees are a pain, to say the least. It’s frustrating to repack luggage when you realise your bags are overweight. And it is insanely exasperating waiting in the queue while customers in front do the same.

most useful travel gadgets scales

These Duronic digital luggage scales are lightweight, easy-to-use and do exactly what they say on the tin. Frankly, every traveller should own one. For all our sakes.

10. Satellite Communicator

Kia recently asked six experts to share their solo hiking tips for women . While particularly relevant to women, many of the tips are applicable to anyone who likes hiking or escaping the grid.

useful travel gadgets sat phone

If like us, you find yourself regularly hiking in highly remote areas, you may wish to buy a satellite communicator  for your safety kit. Iridium phones have global coverage, integrated GPS, an SOS button and Push-to-Talk feature. For one-off adventures, you can  rent a satellite phone  instead.

11. Portable espresso machine

Okay, so maybe this isn’t one of the most useful travel gadgets, but I want one all the same. I may not actually bring it on all our travels, but I can see myself packing it on one of my more luxurious camping trips when I have the car and access to campsite facilities (but perhaps not when climbing one of the seven summits ).

most useful travel gadgets coffee

Small enough to fit into a pocket, the Wacaco Minipresso means you can enjoy a single, double or encapsulated espresso when away from home – as long as you have access to hot water that is.

A semi-automatic piston injects small quantities of water into the coffee adapter and, after a few pushes, you can enjoy a “rich and bold” espresso. Sounds like bliss on a chilly morning.

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3

Wonderboom 3

There's nothing worse than arriving at your Airbnb only to realize you forgot your Bluetooth speaker . Our tech experts recommend bringing along this portable option from Ultimate Ears. Not only does its compact size make it easy to stuff in your bag, but we found that it packs a surprisingly loud punch . It's waterproof (it can even float in the pool!), has a long 14-hour battery life and can be paired up with another Wonderboom 3 speaker for stereo sound.

6

Why travel with tons of different cables when all you need is this handy multi-charger keychain that you can attach to a purse or keys? We love that it's designed to not get tangled up in your bag and that it features multiple outputs and inputs (like USB-C, USB-A, micro-USB and a lightning port for your iPhone) so you can power up all your devices. Just keep in mind that the cable is on the shorter side, so your device will need to be close at hand.

It also features two USB ports for simultaneous charging of multiple devices.

It's lightweight and gives you the many benefits of a traditional tablet , minus the hefty price tag. Plus, it claims to have a battery life that lasts up to 12 hours. We also like the Fire HD 10 Kids model if you're looking for a tablet for your children.

Bose QuietComfort 45 Headphones

QuietComfort 45 Headphones

Our testers found these noise-canceling headphones super comfortable, making long flights a lot more bearable. They f eature excellent sound quality, and we like that you can easily switch between Quiet and Aware modes , so you can hear important flight announcements without taking them off. Just don't forget to bring along the included cable so you can use the plane's audio jack if needed.

Sony WF-1000XM4 Noise-Canceling Wireless Earbuds

WF-1000XM4 Noise-Canceling Wireless Earbuds

If you're someone who struggles to find earbuds that remain comfortable after a few hours, our tech experts recommend these wireless earbuds from Sony. They're an excellent AirPods alternative featuring impressive battery life and soft silicone ear-tips . And on top of the fantastic sound quality, they also come with noise-canceling features so they're a good choice for planes.

Amazon Paperwhite

Paperwhite

On trips, you probably don't have the space in your bag to carry around heavy, bulky books. We love this travel-sized Kindle Paperwhite e-reader , which makes downloading all kinds of books from anywhere in the world (in your language) so simple. We especially love that this model is IPX8-rated , so you don't have to worry if it accidentally falls in the pool or the bathtub . This IP (ingress protection) rating signifies that it can handle continuous water submersion. It's also so lightweight that you likely won't even notice it in your bag.

GoPro HERO9

HERO9

Leave behind your iPhone and take photos and videos on your next adventure with this tiny camera. It's made to capture the action as you ski, dive, hike, bike and more with its super durable, waterproof design (you can take it down to 33 feet deep according to GoPro). It has tons of compatible accessories to help you film, like a helmet strap and a chest mount . Our tech pros love that it shoots in 5K so you're guaranteed sharp, high-quality memories once your trip is over. If you want the most up-to-date GoPro technology and features, consider the pricier GoPro HERO11 .

LifeProof FRĒ

FRĒ

A waterproof phone case can save your phone from serious damage should it accidentally fall in the pool while you're snapping some photos. We like this LifeProof model because we're confident it will keep your phone dry and unharmed thanks to its built-in screen cover and solid construction: In our tests, it even survived an hour of full submersion in 6.5 feet of water !

Joby GripTight ONE GorillaPod Stand

GripTight ONE GorillaPod Stand

It can be frustrating when no one is around to take a family photo for you. Fortunately, this popular tripod from Joby comes with a clamp for your phone (no matter which model you have) as well as flexible legs that you can wrap around objects like a tree branch.

BUBM Electronic Organizer

Electronic Organizer

This super affordable electronic organizer will keep you from losing track of any cables, chargers, memory cards and more . Offered in ten different colors, we love that it folds up into a flat shape that will easily fit into a backpack or suitcase. There's also a convenient zipper closure for items that you want to store more securely.

Case-Mate Marine Waterproof Floating Pouch

Marine Waterproof Floating Pouch

Though most smartphones these days are waterproof, most of us still don’t feel comfortable taking our precious devices into a body of water. But if you plan on doing any water sports during your trip, bring along this waterproof pouch. Though we haven’t tested it in our Labs, it's rated IPX8 which means that it's been tested to withstand continuous water submersion without risking harm to your device . Our experts like that it features a touchscreen window so you can easily take photos and that, according to the brand, it floats.

31 Travel Gadgets For Solo Travellers: Road-Tested Recommendations

travel gadgets for solo travellers including beaxh choes, a travel towel and a mini fan

Since Covid restrictions eased up, I’ve been travelling as much as I can and I have been reminded afresh how useful certain travel gadgets can be.  In the last 2 years, I’ve taken eight solo trips, road-testing my gear across 15 countries, so I wanted to share the pieces of kit that I have valued the most as a solo traveller in 2023.

If you travel with friends or a partner, you might be able to rely on them if you realise you need something you didn’t bring – you have a potential back-up. But when you’re travelling solo , you don’t have anyone else’s kit to borrow from, so you need to make sure you have everything you need.

I’ve split the list of travel gadgets for solo travellers into categories and I’ve included links to Amazon.com if you want to get some for yourself.

Disclosure: This article contains affiliate links. These are links to products or experiences I recommend and if you were to buy something after clicking on them, I might earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Any earnings go towards the upkeep of this blog, which I appreciate.

Table of Contents

Essential Travel Gadgets For Solo Travellers

These gadgets and gear are not useful only for solo travellers, but I definitely recommend them for solo travellers.

1. Power Banks

These portable devices can act as a source of power for your phone (or other electronics), meaning you won’t be caught out with no battery. I always take at least one power bank with me, if not two. And I make a note the night before I travel to make sure they’re fully charged up before I hit the road.

As well as a full size power bank, I recently bought a mini power bank : it has less charge in it, but isn’t as heavy to carry around and doesn’t require a cable, as it plugs straight into the bottom of my iPhone.

2. USB Ports / Cables

I typically take 2-3 Standard USB po rts that fit my Apple phone so that I always have one handy in case I need to connect my phone to the power bank, or into a socket. I tend to keep one in each bag, so they’re always easy to grab when I need them.

I also make sure I have a Micro USB cable, which is the kind that will charge my power bank and some of my other devices. These normally come with the power bank.

power bank, plug adapter and USB cables

3. Plug / Travel Adapter

These are essential! Research in advance what plug sockets are used in the countries you are going to and make sure you have a travel adapter that will work there.

But, be aware some ‘universal’ adapters are not actually universal. For example, I needed a specific one for Namibia , which none of my ‘universal’ adapters fit.  Also, one of my old ‘universal’ adapters does not fit the J-type sockets used in Switzerland (where they use both C and J types ), which caught me out when I was in Lauterbrunnen in June.

So, since then I bought a new one – this travel adapter is much more versatile (and does work with both C&J!).

4. Re-Usable Water Bottle

You need water with you when you’re exploring, whether you’re on a city break or exploring some wild place. To avoid buying single-use plastics, consider a reusable bottle that you can fill as you need. I like a small-ish one that fits in the bottle pocket of my backpack.

5. Compact Wind-Proof Umbrella

I live in the UK which has very changeable weather, so I take a tiny compact umbrella everywhere I go in my own country. And I often take it with me travelling, as a handy ‘just in case’.  I’m very glad I had it when the skies opened up on me in Barcelona – which happened twice on my most recent solo trip there!

6. Compact Rain-Proof Jacket

Similarly, I take a lightweight rain jacket that folds down into a small bag and doesn’t take up much room in my case. I was glad of this in Luxembourg, which was drizzly most of the time I was there last winter.

7. Dry Bags or Packing Cubes

If I’m travelling with a backpack , dry bag s are really useful to keep my clothes and stuff organised within the backpack. It’s so much easier to have things separated into bags rather than one big mess all in the main compartment – especially when you’re searching for something. They can also help keep your clothes dry if you are hiking and there’s a risk of rain – like I experienced on the Inca Trail .

If I’m travelling with a suitcase , packing cubes do a similar thing (except they don’t keep anything dry). I like the kind that can be compressed down with a second zip, so they help you maximise the space in your case.

When I was travelling solo for an extended period this year, I was going to some places that had mild temperatures and then some that would be hot, so I used packing cubes to separate the clothes suited to each climate, which helped keep my case organised.

8. Helpful Smart Phone Apps

Think about what you’ll be doing when you travel and download any apps you might need in advance. As well as train and airline apps, when travelling in cities, I heavily use the Citymapper app. It helps me navigate public transport and has been a godsend when travelling solo in Paris , Lisbon , Bologna , Oslo and many, many other places.

I have also started using the Google Translate app, which helps not only with the right words and phrases, but it has an audio option to play them for you, so you can get the pronunciation correct.

9. First Aid Kit

I always take a small first aid kit wherever I travel, and make sure it includes the basics for minor cuts and blisters, plus some tablets for diarrhoea and also rehydration/electrolyte powders.

I haven’t often needed it, but it gives me peace of mind knowing I can handle simple health issues myself.

10. Wet Wipes & Pocket Tissues

I’ve found that I’m always thankful for a mini pack of wet wipes and some pocket tissues . They don’t weigh much, nor take up much room, but they have come in handy very often if I am unable to access soap & water and/or toilet roll, which can happen when travelling.

Travel Safety Items

These items are especially useful for solo travellers, given the extra precautions we want to take when exploring the world. And, in particular, I found some of these really useful when visiting a beach alone – because I was in a dilemma about what to do with my things when I went into the sea.

11. Mini Carabiner

I recently discovered mini carabiners , and they served a perfect purpose for me when I was on the beach alone in Albania, making them one of my favourite travel gadgets for solo travellers.

I wanted to go in the sea, but I didn’t want to leave all my stuff on the beach, in case anything got stolen. So, I used the mini carabiner to attach my room key to my swimming costume strap. This way I could go into the gorgeous Adriatic sea without worrying that someone could let themselves into my hotel room.

I also used the same mini carabiner to attach a mini coin purse containing my money to my swimming costume. This is a bit bulkier than the keys, but it wasn’t a problem to swim with it (it’s a very small purse, and I was able to tuck it into my costume without it feeling uncomfortable).

Anyway, in the end, I found something even better than the purse, which is the next item…

12. Waterproof Phone Case

These waterproof phone cases are designed to do just that: protect your phone from water. And that’s how I used mine when I was kayaking in a fjord in Flam in Norway (that was amazing, by the way…). Tip : put the camera end of the phone furthest from the strap – it’s easier to take photos that way.

But, after a tip from someone I follow on Twitter, I realised I could also tuck my money into the case alongside the phone so that I could go swimming in the ocean with my phone and money safe around my neck – and that’s what I did when I went in the see in Albania!

So as well as being useful in water, they’re also very helpful travel gadgets for solo travellers!

13. Antitheft Bag

In general, having a cross-body bag is safer than one that sits on one shoulder, because it can’t be grabbed from you as easily.

However, following another travel blogger’s tip, I recently bought a theft-proof bag from Travelon . Mine is a small cross-body bag with a slash-proof strap and fabric. It also has clippable zippers, meaning it is hard for anyone to surreptitiously open the zips. The inside compartment is also RFID blocking, to keep your bank cards from being read.

Travel Gadgets For Flying

If you’re travelling solo by plane, there are some specific gadgets that can help make the experience easier.

14. Noise-Cancelling Earbuds

When flying, the noise from the plane and other passengers can be distracting, so having some compact noise-cancelling earbuds can really help. I splashed out on Apple AirPods , but there are other brands available for less.

15. Streaming Apps – For Downloaded TV Shows / Movies

Even if there will be entertainment on the plane, I always try to remember to download something to watch on my phone.  I normally have a choice of TV shows and movies, so I have a choice depending on my mood.

16. Foldable Phone Stand

As a stocking filler at Chritsmas, I was given this handy little folding phone stand . It’s great for watching things on your phone when you’re travelling because it is light-weight and folds down almost flat, so it can be slotted into pockets easily.

17. Blow-Up Pillow Combo, Eye Mask & Ear Plugs

If it’s going to be a long flight, I might try to sleep. I’m not often very successful at sleeping on planes, but I like to be prepared to at least try .  There are some more comfortable pillow options, but because I try to travel light, I tend to take a simple inflatable pillow that can be folded down into a small case. I usually slip a small eye mask and a couple of earplugs into the case as well.

inflatable cushion & mask, refillable toiletries tube and ear buds

18. Re-Usable Toiletries Tubes

If you’re taking a bag in the cabin of a plane, you know you need your liquids to be in bottles under x oz or 100ml. For this, I use reusable and squeezable silicone tubes . They’re easy to squeeze every last drop out of and also easy to clean afterwards.

I also use them even if I’m checking a bag, which I do sometimes, because, in those instances, I prefer to have basic overnight items in my carry-on, just in case my checked bag doesn’t arrive.

19. Luggage Scale

If you are checking a bag, and even if you’re not (some airlines have weight restrictions on cabin bags), you will most likely need to keep your baggage within a weight limit. You could use your bathroom scales, but they’re not that easy to use for backpacks, which may not balance on the scale. This is where a portable luggage scale comes in handy. You can use the strap to attach it to any bag or suitcase, lift the bag up using the scale as a handle, and you’ll see the weight on the digital screen.

Travel Gadgets For Solo Travellers – Location-Specific Gear

Some locations have specific conditions that can be made easier to experience with certain location-specific travel gadgets.

20. Mini Handheld Fan – For Hot Locations

This is probably my favourite gadget that I discovered this year and it served me well travelling around the Balkans in June and July when the temperatures were hot, hot, hot (especially Tirana in June – phew!)! There aren’t many trains in that region, so I was on a lot of buses. Plus at the end of the trip, I was delayed in Tirana airport for hours – and I was glad of this mini hand-h eld fan (even if I did get some strange looks!)!

It is small (smaller than the length of my hand), quiet and its rechargeable battery lasts 6 hours – so I highly recommend this little gadget to anyone who hates being hot & stuffy.

It even helped me out in Norway, when one of my hotel rooms had no aircon – as tiny as it is, it did pretty well to cool the room down! It really is one of the best travel gadgets I’ve tried. I have the pink one.

21. Beach Shoes – For Single Or Coral Beaches

I was in Albania a few months ago and the beach I chose to stay on was shingle. I had learned my lesson from hobbling over pebbles on the beaches of Croatia and Montenegro, so I brought a pair of beach shoes .

These are not attractive – I will start by saying that!  They look like they should be paired with a wet suit, not a bikini. But their rubber sole protects your feet from sharp or rocky textures, making it much easier to get in and out of the ocean on a single beach. So while you won’t look as stylish, you’re less likely to stagger and stumble!

These are great for both shingle and coral beaches (these can also be sharp underfoot, as I found out on Mauritius and the Maldives).

22. Down Jacket – For Cold Climates

For cold temperatures, a down jacket is a great item to have. Not only are they very good at keeping you warm, but they are lightweight and compress down into a small pouch that doesn’t take up much space in your bag.

You can get different weights depending on how cold the climate you’ll be in. I caught mine for Iceland in the summer, so it is a light one, from Mountain Warehouse. It also came in handy when going up into the Swiss alps this summer.

23. Travel Towel – For Camping

Travel towels can be a useful item if you’re staying in hostels or camping. They’re typically flat, so they take up little space. They’re also super absorbent, so they work as well as a normal towel, just less luxurious-feeling.

I bought one for the Inca Trail and also used it on my camper van trip around Iceland .

Solo Traveller Camera Gear

Most people like to take photographs when they travel, so you might be thinking about what camera gear to bring.

24. Smart Phone

Smart phones have great cameras these days, so it is possible to get amazing photos with just your phone. The photo below of the Norwegian fjords was taken with my iPhone 11 Pro Max.

tall snow-capped mountains either side of a still fjord in Norway

However, I have found that my phone does still struggle in poor light and its zoom still has limits, so there is still an advantage to having a ‘proper’ camera. I have been taking one with me on solo trips this year.

If you have a choice of a camera body to bring, it makes sense to bring one that is as lightweight as possible. That said, I recently upgraded my camera body to a Canon 5D Mark iv, so I’m not really following that advice!

DSLR camera & lense, plus various photography gadgets & kit

26. Versatile Lens & Cloth

I have a big 70-200mm lens which is great for zooming in and capturing the detail of things you’re not close to.  But it is very heavy and I’ve learned that I can make do with a versatile 24-105mm lens pretty well. It’s so much lighter than the big one!

Oh, and I take at least one microfibre cloth to keep the lens glass clean.

27. Spare Batteries & Battery Charger

Unless you’re going on a v short trip, it’s a smart idea to have a spare battery and/or your battery charger with you.

28. SD Cards & USB SD Reader

Similarly, I take a couple of SD cards with plenty of memory, plus a USB SD card reader so I can transfer photos to my laptop if I want.

29. Comfortable Strap

I disliked the strap that came with my camera, so I requested a leather camera strap as a Christmas present – and I love it!  It is so much more comfortable to wear.

If you think you’ll be using a slow shutter speed or dealing with dark lighting when you’re photographing, you might need a tripod. You might also want one if you take pictures of yourself when travelling alone – this is not something I do, but I know I’m the odd one out on that point.

I have one which was recommended to me by several other photographers and is fairly lightweight and super-easy to put up and down – by Peak Design .

31. Portable Hard Drive

If you are taking a lot of photos and need somewhere with more storage than your laptop, you might consider bringing a portable hard drive with you. Lacie does some that have a protective case which makes them suitable for travel.

Solo Female Travel Accessories

When I was thinking about this blog post, I realised I don’t recommend any gadgets especially for female travellers, let alone female solo travellers (apart from period products, if you use them).

There are some female-specific gadgets I have tried, but I didn’t value them very much and don’t intend to use them again. If you’re curious, there are…

Travel Gadgets For Solo Travellers – that I DON’T recommend

A she-wee / female urination device.

I tried this device to enable women to pee standing up when on the Inca Trail , but I didn’t find it very easy to use and didn’t use it more than once.

A Door Stop

This was recommended by another solo female traveller and I bought it to use as a precaution in hotel rooms, in addition to the locking mechanism on the door. I read it works with all kinds of floor coverings and doors, but I tried it in 16 hotels in my travels in 2022 and it only successfully worked in 2-3 of them, so I won’t be bringing it again.

two rubber door stops

I think a chair or your luggage wedged in front of the door would work just as well to deter anyone trying to get in / make a noise so you wake up.

The Last Word

I hope you’ve found this list of travel gadgets for solo travellers useful. If you have any other gadget tips, let me know in the comments – I’m definitely open to new ideas!

2 4 . STARTER TRAVEL Photography drone – DJI Mavic mini

travel gadgets 2022 uk

The introduction of the DJI Mavic Mini to the drone market at the end of 2019 truly opened up the aerial photography market for everyone! With a price that’s roughly half of the top-of-the-range drones and a small and portable form, the Mavic Mini is the go-to choice for new drone pilots looking to get some cool aerial shots. Many travellers, ourselves included, opt for the Mavic Mini over other drones as it’s so small and portable. It’s simply a great drone! We recommend getting the ‘Fly More Combo’ option as it’s better value. You’ll need the extra batteries and accessories.

23 Best Travel Accessories for Every Kind of Trip

Whether you’re crammed in economy class or on a long drive, these gadgets and accessories will make the time pass quickly.

best travel accessories

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. Why Trust Us?

Having the right travel accessories can be the difference between “Ugh, we’ve got a five-hour flight coming up” and “At least it’s only a quick five-hour flight.”

Whether you’re a frequent traveler or you save up for one trip every few years, chances are you already know that what you pack impacts your comfort, your enjoyment, and, perhaps most important, your stress levels both while traveling and when you’ve actually settled in at your new destination. That’s why it’s critical to pack useful, helpful travel accessories. Take the wrong ones, and you may find yourself carrying extra weight for gear you never end up using.

As a full-time travel writer, I enjoy the wonderful perk of being able to travel quite a bit. While chasing down stories, I’ve stayed in five-star suites in the Maldives and slept on the top bunk of a 15-hour budget sleeper train in Vietnam . So I’ve experienced quite a variety of travel conditions while using what’s likely hundreds of travel accessories in the process.

Over time, I’ve been able to narrow down my must-have travel accessories to include a perfect blend of ones that are useful, easy to carry, and multifunctional. For example, a packable mini- backpack can serve as a lightweight bag for day hikes or as an extra carry-on if you buy too much abroad.

These are the 23 best travel accessories I recommend to all my friends planning their next weekend or bucket-list getaways.

Best Travel Accessories

  • Best In-Flight Bluetooth Audio Adapter: Twelve South AirFly Pro
  • Best Travel Footrest: Airplane Footrest
  • Best Cord Organizer for Small Items: Bellroy Classic Pouch
  • Best Containers for Toiletries: Cadence Weekender Bundle
  • Best Blanket for Cold Flights: Rumpl NanoLoft Puffy Blanket
The Expert: I’m a freelance travel writer and editor who usually focuses on adventure travel. That’s led me to take some pretty lengthy flight patterns (most recently, 54 hours of travel on the way to Rwanda) and fairly remote road trips (through central Alaska). But traveling frequently doesn't mean anything goes. Like everyone else, I have my personal annoyances while traveling: I get cold easily, I’m sensitive to noise when sleeping in new places, and I always need to be able to work on-the-go. What all of that means is that my experience with travel accessories isn’t just about finding those that make flights more comfortable, but also those that improve my productivity, help me enjoy myself in new destinations, and make packing as painless as possible. I think I've used just about every type of travel product out there, and truly feel the ones I have selected are the best of the best.

What to Consider When Buying Travel Accessories

The best travel accessories eliminate the inconveniences and annoyances of life on-the-go. For me, this includes headphones that drown out engine noise (or crying babies), containers that allow me to bring my favorite soap and shampoo on flights, and anything that makes long trips more comfortable. Consider what you value most and look for accessories in that space.

No matter what you’re in the market for, don’t overlook size, especially for liquids. The TSA limits your liquids to 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) per container and prefers them all packed into one quart-size bag. As for luggage, make sure any travel bags you intend to carry on are no larger than 22 x 14 x 9 inches, and checked bags no heavier than 50 pounds. Even if you aren’t checking a suitcase, you’ll have an easier, more comfortable experience with less to lug around. Most of the accessories below are relatively lightweight, but they’ll add a few pounds combined.

Finally, a word on price. Some travelers don’t want to spend too much money on items they might accidentally leave in a seat-back pocket, whereas other people tend to take better care of things that cost more. I generally recommend ruling out the very cheapest items in most categories, lest you find your shampoo bottle started leaking mid-flight.

How We Selected These Travel Accessories

orvis packable jacket

In addition to my own experiences using these products as a travel writer and gear tester, I weighed consumer reviews, investigated market research, and did a thorough evaluation of each product's price, features, and overall value. If you’re looking for stuff to make your next trip easier and more comfortable, start with these recommendations.

Twelve South AirFly Pro

AirFly Pro

Given how small and lightweight this Bluetooth adapter is, I make sure to pack it for every flight where I expect to watch a movie. The adapter plugs into airplane screens and pairs via Bluetooth so you can use your preferred noise-canceling earphones with the in-flight entertainment.

It has excellent battery life, but the connection does suffer from some lag. I’ve noticed a very slight audio delay in older planes—and you may need a two-prong adapter on older entertainment systems.

If you plan to use the AirFly only for sending audio to your headphones, you can get by with the less-expensive AirFly Classic, which has slightly better battery life. But if you want to use Bluetooth to send audio to the AirFly (for example, to play audio from your phone in a car without built-in Bluetooth), you’ll need the Pro.

Sekoess Airplane Footrest

Airplane Footrest

My foot hammock is probably the nerdiest travel accessory I own, but it's a lifesaver—or should I say leg saver. The adjustable-length hammock attaches to your airplane seat's tray table and eases pressure on your low back, knees, and glutes.

I'm much less stiff after flights when I use the foot hammock and have never noticed it bothering the person in the seat in front of me, even while making adjustments. You can also buy versions with more rigid footrests, though I find the more flexible, hammock-style footrest is easier to stuff into a carry-on.

Bellroy Classic Pouch

Classic Pouch

Whether it’s a road trip or an international flight, I always use a small, simple zippered case for my tech gear so I don’t have to fish around for it in the bottom of my bag.

Cord organizers have become trendy lately, but some have so many straps and pockets that I still have to search for the exact item I need. Instead, I just use a small case like the Bellroy Classic Pouch. Since I have a separate case for my computer charger and cord, this one has enough space for most of my other small items, including the AirFly and Bose earbuds in this roundup. It has a few basic organizational pockets and zips wide enough so you can find what you need in a hurry.

Oh, and if you want a case to fit your computer charger as well as all your other travel accessories, never fear: There’s a larger option. The Bellroy Tech Kit is deeper and longer, with a clamshell-style opening, so it can hold slightly larger accessories like computer charger cubes or a GoPro camera.

Cadence Weekender Bundle

Weekender Bundle

Carry-on-only travelers are familiar with packing small amounts of their favorite toiletries, but mini squeeze bottles make it challenging to use gels and creams that get stuck to the bottoms.

Fortunately, you can alleviate that issue with Cadence’s magnetic honeycomb-style capsules, which stick together and take up little space. These convenient containers are made from ocean plastic cleaned from beaches, and you can customize the tile labels and colors of each capsule. I recommend the six-pack for carrying both hair and skincare products, but you could connect three times that number if you so desire.

Rumpl NanoLoft Puffy Blanket

NanoLoft Puffy Blanket

I carry a packable insulated blanket on almost every trip, even to tropical destinations. Aside from being useful as a plane blanket, it comes in handy in hotels where the A/C is definitely working or when there’s only a sheet on the bed.

I like the Rumpl NanoLoft Puffy Blanket since the fill is light and compressible. It’s on the smaller side at roughly 4.5-feet by 3-feet, but it’s worth the trade-off for the packability (less than 4-inches wide when packed.) I usually carry it in one of the bottle pockets on the side of my carry-on backpack.

Because it’s not a full-size blanket, the NanoLoft is best as a lap blanket on cold flights or car rides, and works well as a pillow when packed. For more coverage, consider the full-size NanoLoft (6- by 14-inches packed, $179+). I recommend getting a tiny stuff sack or compression packing cube to make it into a more manageable carry-on size.

Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack

Ultralight Stuff Pack

The Osprey Ultralight Stuff Sack is proof that the best travel accessories don’t have to be high-tech or overly complex—just useful. This is a water-resistant, packable backpack with mesh straps, a side pocket, and one small internal pocket. That’s it.

Because it’s so simple, it folds down incredibly small to about 5- by 5- by 3-inches. I often wear it when sightseeing around a city when I don’t want to carry a purse or shoulder bag.

But even if I don’t have a plan for using it, I toss it in my luggage every time. It can come in handy when you’re packing in a hurry and can’t fit everything as neatly into your bag as you did the first time, or if you’re road tripping and want to pull over and walk to a quirky roadside attraction. Most of my other ultra-packable bags are totes, but I prefer the security of a zippable backpack.

Cabeau S3 Evolution

S3 Evolution

These pillows are phenomenal, and reviewers say they're the only way they can ever get some sleep when crammed into a middle seat.

An adjustable headrest strap keeps the pillow upright and in place, and the comfortable foam never seems to lose its shape. Though most people wear the Evolution around their neck as intended, it works well as a traditional pillow, especially considering the gap in the middle leaves room for bulky over-ear headphones.

Alongza Portable Charger

Portable Charger

I take thousands of vacation photos per trip, and often, the only camera I’m carrying is the one in my cell phone. To avoid running out of battery before getting back to my hotel room, I carry the ridiculously small Alongza charger.

It holds about two phone charges, and it won’t power bigger devices like laptops. But because it’s roughly the size of a credit card (though a smidge thicker), it’s easy to carry and is able to charge my phone while walking around.

I find most power banks too big to fit in my pocket, but this is probably the tiniest one I’ve ever used. I also like the built-in UBC-C and Lightning connectors so I can leave my cords at the hotel.

HiBar Maintain Shampoo and Conditioner Set

Maintain Shampoo and Conditioner Set

If carrying a 3-ounces of shampoo won’t get you through a whole trip, consider using a solid shampoo and conditioner bar that won’t raise any eyebrows going through the TSA checkpoint.

There are five different sets for different hair types, each safe to use for color-treated hair. Be sure to toss them into a plastic bag if you’re planning to pack them before they’re dry.

I have very thin, fine hair, and find the HiBar Volumizie set works just as well as the far more expensive salon set I use in my home shower.

Bose QuietComfort Noise Canceling Earbuds

QuietComfort Noise Canceling Earbuds

I love my over-the-ear headphones, but on long flights, they can start to feel a bit sore on my ears. I took a risk on the Bose QuietComfort headphones, since at nearly $300 they’re even more expensive than Apple AirPods. But I’m glad I bought them.

They provide a level of noise-cancellation I never thought would be possible from an in-ear headphone, and the case can fully charge the headphones three times before it needs to be plugged in again—enough to get you through even the longest of trans-Atlantic flights and chatty seatmates.

The only real minus is the size, as they don’t sit as closely to your head as the popular Apple AirPods. But the sound quality more than makes up for it.

Hydro Flask Wide Mouth Flex Sip Lid Bottle

Wide Mouth Flex Sip Lid Bottle

At this point, it’s a given to carry a reusable water bottle, but I’ve started bringing my own coffee mug too, especially since I like my coffee piping hot. In many countries, coffee is served in a teacup and not guzzled like I’m used to, and having my own mug is a great way to fill my coffee once at the hotel without bothering the staff to bring more and more.

I’ve recently been using the Hydro Flask Stainless Steel Mug. It keeps coffee hot, but most important, it has a tight seal. I can buy coffee in the airport, put the mug in my carry-on, and pull it out mid-flight without worrying that it leaked in the bag I have shoved under my seat.

Sony WH-1000XM4 Over-Ear Headphones

WH-1000XM4 Over-Ear Headphones

When it comes to audio, two big names still reign supreme, at least in my book: Sony and Bose. Bose makes my favorite in-ear headphones, but Sony’s WH-1000XM4 is far and away the best over-the-ear option. The battery life is impressive at 30 or more hours per charge, and the charging is quick—20 minutes powers about 8 hours of listening.

The noise canceling is fabulous, as I’ve learned when trying to talk to someone wearing them, and they fold into a flat case. That said, they’re still a bit on the bulky side, stored or worn, but if you’re planning to carry over-the-ear headphones, their size probably isn’t your top priority.

JBL Clip 4 Speaker

Clip 4 Speaker

I work remotely and set my own schedule, which means I’m often working for a few hours here and there in hotel rooms on vacation. I also love to listen to podcasts when I’m getting ready in the morning, so I always make sure to pack a small Bluetooth speaker.

The JBL Clip 4 has better sound than expected for its size, including strong bass. The built-in clip makes it easy to hang on a shower rod or suitcase handle, and because it’s waterproof, it’s ideal for use around pools, beaches, hot tubs, and whatever other amenities you may avail yourself to on vacation.

The negative: it uses a lithium ion battery, which means you have to take it in your carry-on, not in your checked bags.

Panasonic Lumix G7 4K Camera

Lumix G7 4K Camera

I’m constantly amazed by the quality of photos you can get from an iPhone, but when it comes to shooting in suboptimal conditions (or trying to show depth and scale in landscapes), you’ll probably want a more advanced camera.

The Lumix G7 is a ridiculously good camera with a surprisingly low price, especially considering it’s mirrorless, which makes it lighter and smaller than non-mirrorless options. It shoots photos and videos in 4K, has Wi-Fi so you can send your photos straight to your phone or computer, and has multiple auto settings for beginners, including one specifically for night-sky photography.

It’s packed with features and is the number one camera I recommend to all travelers who want to take better travel photos without spending more serious money on a camera, even if you don’t have any actual interest in using its more professional features.

Peak Design Packing Cube

Packing Cube

I’ve become a big fan of Peak Design. The brand's packing cubes are the its first item I ever tried. They have strong zippers that don’t seem to get caught in the fabric while compressing as much as other cubes, and you can fit far more than you’d expect into each one.

I prefer the small size, as it’s easier to stack in a suitcase and fits better in a backpack or shoulder bag. These packing cubes are also light and thin, so you can throw an empty one in your bag (as I found especially useful in Patagonia) just in case you end up buying an extra sweater during your travels.

Pro packing tip: Don't pack small clothing items like underwear, socks, and swimsuits in the cubes. Instead, shove them into negative space around the cubes to maximize all available luggage areas.

Thule Subterra Carry-on Roller

Subterra Carry-on Roller

Hard-sided carry-on spinners have become all the rage in the last few years, and while I do love my July bag, I’ve found two drawbacks to hard-sided bags: the second set of wheels eats into the luggage space and there’s no ability to stuff them into an overhead bin or car if they don’t quite fit.

Fortunately, I’ve had the Thule Subterra for a while now and it’s become my most-used bag. That’s thanks to a built-in compression panel with pocket; a small front pocket for passports, keys, and sunglasses; and durable back wheels that seem to have no problem crashing over curbs and steps.

I’ve also come to appreciate its slightly smaller size. While some travelers may balk at the idea of not maximizing their carry-on capacity, I find that it's actually easier for travel, especially when I see my fellow travelers’ larger bags getting forcibly gate checked on smaller planes.

Baseus Blade

Blade

I’ve used plenty of backup chargers while traveling (who hasn’t?), but the Blade from Baseus is the one I rely on most. That’s partially because I have a computer with a USB-C charging port, and the Blade is optimized for quick charging of USB-C computers.

I can charge my MacBook Pro from 0- to 100-percent with about a 20-percent charge left on the Blade (which is enough to almost fully charge my iPhone).

Other features I appreciate are its slim design (so I can travel with it in my laptop pocket), a display that shows you both how much battery is left and how much time until the Blade is fully charged, and the fact that it takes only about 1.5 hours to fully charge it.

If I use the entire capacity on a flight, as long as I have at least a 1.5-hour layover, I can be back up and running on the next flight.

Ombraz Armless Sunglasses

Armless Sunglasses

I've broken more than a few pairs of sunglasses by shoving them into the pocket of an overstuffed bag or sitting on them at dinner if I put them in my back pocket after a day of sightseeing. That's why when traveling, I nearly always carry Ombraz sunglasses. If I bring a fancier pair, it stays in a hard case in my luggage.

The smartly designed Ombraz shades have a soft adjustable cord in place of arms, so they’re nearly impossible to break or bend. They slide into a flat padded case and come in five unisex styles. You can also buy side shields (ideal for reflective surroundings, like snow or water) and have your prescription added.

The only downside is that you’ll need both hands to put them on, but to me, it’s worth it. I’ve had the classic pair for about three years, and they haven’t showed much wear or abrasion—but there’s a lifetime guarantee on the cord and frame if they ever do.

CM Pack of Two Mini Pouch Case Bag

Pack of Two Mini Pouch Case Bag

I almost always have my laptop with me when I travel, and since the chunky MacBook charging cube and long cord are too bulky to store with the rest of my small cords, I used to just toss them into my bag. But then I found these tiny travel pouches sized for a computer power adapter.

I can easily fit my computer power adapter and cord in one pouch, and now, I don’t have to pull everything out of my bag to untangle the laptop cord, or use tweezers to remove dirt from the bottom of my backpack that got stuck in the charging port.

The pouches in this set are as simple and lightweight as can be, which is why I like them. They’re also useful for other small items such as GoPros, flash drives, memory cards, and camera batteries.

For all of our gadget guides, we select products we trust and put good design and performance above all else. This time around, we’ve picked gadgets that will make traveling not only more peaceful and entertaining, but also safer and more productive. This guide includes devices like headphones, handhelds, and speakers for comfort and play, along with more practical gear like a hard drive, trackers, and chargers, so you can get some work done with peace of mind knowing your devices will have enough juice (and so you don’t lose anything). Everything on this list comes from well-known and trusted brands in their respective industries, and we leverage our decade-plus experience reviewing these products and covering the tech space on a daily basis to become intimately familiar with the gadgets before deciding to include them.

  • It’s better for your teeth to have a reliable toothbrush than some dinky throwaway, especially if it’s electronic and has smartphone connectivity

Best Toothbrush: In a similar vein to wrinkles, hygiene upkeep most certainly doesn’t take a vacation just because you are. With that in mind, a smart toothbrush with seamless smartphone connectivity is the way to go. Maintaining oral hygiene is vital, and keeping track of just how long you’re brushing is made equally important thanks to Quip’s app that informs its users on their top-and-bottom row coverage and overall intensity. For those looking to have fresh breath throughout their trip and also make their dentist proud on their next visit, this is the way to go.

travel gadgets 2022 uk

Booked your next holiday? Got an upcoming work trip? Decided to simply leave your troubles behind? Then you’re probably after a carefully curated list of the best travel gadgets.

In the words of Bilbo Baggins, it’s a dangerous business going out your door and stepping on the road, and we agree. The mere thought of a dead battery during a five-hour airport transfer delay makes us tremble, and don’t get us started on travelling without headphones.

  • Read more: These are the best headphones around right now

There’s no shortage of travel-oriented tech out there. In fact, there’s too much. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the best travel gadgets to help make your next trip run as smoothly as possible.

The best travel gadgets you can buy today:

Sony wh-1000xm5.

Best-Travel-Gadgets-2023-Sony-WH-1000XM5

Sony’s critically-acclaimed active noise cancelling (aka ANC) headphones aren’t just one of the best travel gadgets in 2023 — they’re some of the best headphones ever made, period.

With superb noise cancellation for drowning out airport clutter and cabin drone, incredible sound, a formidable battery life, and a feature-laden app, they’re one of the best all-rounders money can buy.

LinkOn Ganius 136W Wall Charger

travel gadgets 2022 uk

Chargers don’t normally fall under the category of covetable tech, but LinkOn’s offering is definitely an exception. While it may look like any other regular slim plug, it’s got some serious charging chops hidden beneath its slim black exterior. Capable of delivering 100W to a single device, it’ll easily charge demanding devices like laptops with ease, with plenty of capacity left over to simultaneously charge phones and more.

If you need even more juice, you can snap up an even more powerful 166W variant directly from LinkOn . Either way, you’ll be getting one of the most powerful chargers that money can buy, and it comes with hot-swappable plugs too, making for less clutter when you travel.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

Best-Travel-Gadgets-2023-Amazon-Kindle-Paperwhite

While there’s obviously something to be said for remaining connected with the rest of the world, sometimes it’s good to pop down the smartphone and reconnect with a bit of literary therapy. And if you’d rather not cart around multiple books during a long trip, then an e-reader is the way to go.

The Kindle Paperwhite is one of the best choices for most people, hitting the sweet spot in terms of both price and features. With a generous 6.8in backlit (adjustable) display, up to 10 weeks of battery life, faster page turns, USB-C charging, and a waterproof build for poolside reading, it delivers on practically all fronts.

Insta360 Link

Best-Travel-Gadgets-2023-InstaLink-360

A webcam might seem like an odd choice for a list outlining the best travel gadgets in 2023, but if you’re regularly scooting around for work and/or looking to create content on the go, then the InstaLink 360 is one of the best, most compact options around.

Regarded to be one of the sharpest, clearest webcams in the world at the time of writing, it’ll elevate you from pixellated mess to razor-sharp professional in an instant, and it’s laden with tech and features too. These include a gargantuan sensor which dwarfs the competition, and a built in three-axis gimbal (powered by AI tracking) to ensure you’re always in focus and in frame, even when you’re moving around. With gesture controls and powerful software, it’s an ideal companion for serious on-the-go collaborators.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV

travel gadgets 2022 uk

This mighty Olympus snapper is a retro-styled delight that will comfortably fit into any bag without causing sore shoulders. Its compact stature is all thanks to a Micro Four Thirds sensor, which means smaller, lighter lenses too. Despite its size, it’s a very strong performer, and one of the best portable cameras around.

Key features include snappy autofocus, burst shooting, crisp shots, and impressive 4K video. Sure, you’ve got a smartphone as well, but if you’re looking to elevate your holiday memories, you can’t beat a dedicated camera — especially one as handsome and as small as this.

GlocalMe Numen Air

travel gadgets 2022 uk

While it might be overkill for the occasional trip to Europe, the Numen Air SIMless portable hotspot is a veritable godsend for serial travellers who want to work and stay connected regardless of where they find themselves. Key perks include 5G capability for the fastest possible speeds, and support for more than 100 operators in more than 50 countries.

Its sim-free capabilities also mean that you don’t have to go around hunting down phone shops at every destination, while the ability to connect up to 16 devices makes it a true connectivity workhorse. With a 2.4in touchscreen, generous 5400mAh battery, and the ability to double up as a power bank too, this is a Digital Nomad’s new best friend.

Tribit StormBox Micro 2

Best-Travel-Gadgets-2023-Tribit-Stormbox-Micro-2

The award-winning Tribit StormBox Micro 2 is a dinky speaker that’s turned heads thanks to its impressive power, which is balanced with surprisingly detailed sound, and (even more surprisingly), decent thumping bass. Despite its pocket-sized shell, it’s capable of around 12 hours of use per charge, with fast USB-C charging making for a convenient top-up.

Naturally, it doubles up as a power bank, and can be easily clipped onto handlebars, bags, tree branches, or anything else you fancy. An accompanying app lets you tweak things to your liking, while IP67 waterproofing powers let it easily shrug off rain, mud, snow, and even full immersion without any problems.

GoPro Hero11 Black

Best-Travel-Gadgets-2023-Go-Pro-Hero11-Black

GoPro’s Hero11 Black is one of the best action cams money can buy, making it an ideal choice for adrenaline junkies who want to record their high-flying (or deep-diving) antics. A new image sensor serves up impressively crisp 5.3 60fps videos, with a 2.7K 240fps mode for 8x slo-mo for highlighting particularly slick moments.

The Hero11 also has the widest field of view of the range to date, with souped-up HyperSmooth stabilisation making sure that footage is comfortable to watch. With plenty of accessories and a water/glare-repelling lens, it’s a solid investment for content creators and those looking to document their travels, hands-free.

DJI Mini 2 SE

Best-Travel-Gadgets-2023-DJI-Mini-2-SE

The new Mini 2 SE weighs in at under the magic 249g number, meaning you can fly it practically anywhere without any registration required. With a generous 10km range and 31-minute maximum flight time, it’s also a capable little thing that’s sturdy enough to fend off winds up to 38kph.

With a fully-featured app offering easy-to-use functionality like natural panning, you’ll be recording Attenborourgh-worthy footage in no time. Depending on where you are, of course.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack

travel gadgets 2022 uk

Need to pack a bunch but don’t want the hassle of relying on the Carousel Gods for the safe return of your suitcase? Then a large backpack is the way to go. This capacious 35-litre offering from Cotopaxi not only looks incredible (we’re a sucker for bright colours), but it’s also rammed with practical features to make life on the road easier.

These include robust materials, a suitcase-style full-wrap zipper, subdivided compartments, reinforced handles, a rain cover, and more. With hidden pockets for valuables, a removable hip belt, and plenty more tricks beneath its alluring exterior, it’s sure to serve you well for years to come.

The 15 Best Travel Accessories for Your Next Trip, Tested and Reviewed

We test thousands of products every year and these are our top travel accessory picks to make any journey as smooth as possible.

In This Article

  • Our Top Picks

Our Testing Process

  • Tips for Buying
  • Why Trust T+L

Travel + Leisure / Alli Waataja

It doesn’t matter if you’re a minimalist or a maximalist when it comes to travel, there is certain gear that is non-negotiable when packing. Think items you’ll always be grateful to have thrown into your suitcase or carry-on whether it’s your first or fifteenth trip abroad.

The right travel accessories should help to streamline your trip without weighing you down or malfunctioning while on the go — but getting the right gear on the first go can be tough. That’s why we personally tested thousands of different items in our lab and in the real world, all for at least six months. We continuously checked and rated for attributes like comfort, portability, and durability to best ensure our picks will actually go the distance.

The following items rose to the top for their overall quality and longevity so, here, find the best travel accessories, all reviewed by us.

Best Travel Pillow

Infinity pillow travel pillow.

The modular design is very versatile.

It’s not as firm as a memory foam option.

The best travel pillow should support your head and neck comfortably without causing you to overheat or feel restricted — and that’s exactly why we love the Infinity Pillow Travel Pillow. During the testing process, we found that the scarf-like design makes it easy to adjust to your personal preference when traveling; you can wrap it around your neck once for a looser fit or wrap it twice for a bit more support while napping. We also love that this pillow is machine washable which makes it easy to ensure it stays clean and sanitary between trips. The only thing we didn’t love was that this option isn’t as firm or supportive as a memory foam neck pillow would be so you’ll want to keep that in mind if you prefer more support.

Best Packing Cubes

Gonex compression packing cubes.

There is impressive compression to fit even more clothing inside than a standard cube.

The set is very large and might be too expansive for shorter trips or light packers.

The best packing cube set that we tested , the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes, earned top points across the board thanks to the impressive compression and seemingly endless room in each cube. The clothing cubes are ultra lightweight and the material has held up extremely well even through heavy-duty use. We also love that the zipper doesn’t show any signs of stress when the packing cubes are stuffed to their limit.

The only slight downfall is that the cubes are on the larger side and might be too big to really make a difference if you tend to use a carry-on or pack really light. If you’re looking for something that’ll help organize a small amount of clothes, you might want to choose packing cubes that are on the smaller side, or only bring one from this three- or four-pack.

Best Toiletry Bottles

Liquisnugs premium silicone travel bottles.

These TSA-approved bottles are incredibly easy to fill.

The set includes two 89-milliliter and two 60-milliliter bottles so, if you want four bigger bottles, you’ll need to buy two sets.

The quality and utility of toiletry bottles can vary greatly. While we’ve tried dozens while traveling in the past, none of them held a candle to the LiquiSnugs Premium Silicone Travel Bottles. These have a wide opening which makes it easy to squeeze your favorite shampoos and conditioners into portable, TSA-approved amounts. The silicone material is also much more flexible and durable than hard plastic bottles while the malleable material ensures you won’t have to deal with any leakage once you land.

Keep in mind that the price point for this set is higher than the average set of travel bottles (considering it only includes four bottles with no case), but it’s worth the splurge if you want something that’s easy to refill and durable enough not to spill when packed in your own case.

  • PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Jhett Thompson

Best Toiletry Bag

Away large toiletry bag.

There are an abundance of pockets which makes it easy to stay organized on the go.

It’s expensive if you travel infrequently.

We’re already major fans of Away luggage — and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in this case. We particularly like that The Large Toiletry Bag by Away is waterproof and has loads of different pockets inside including one for brushes and a clear pocket for makeup products, along with others for additional toiletry needs. The bag also has a convenient top handle which makes it easy to grab while on the go plus it’s worth noting the nylon material is super lightweight and can handle a lot of products without getting too heavy.

We think this bag is worth the splurge if you want something that’ll last for the long run while also providing an easy way to keep all your toiletries properly organized while in transit, and possibly even at home, too.

  • PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Tamara Staples

Best Travel Jewelry Case

Cuyana travel jewelry case.

The oval container offers a surprisingly spacious interior.

We wish there were a few more organizational features.

Investing in a great travel jewelry case is one of the best things you can do if you’re hoping to up your organization game. Not only does a good case keep all your jewelry in one designated spot at your destination, but it also ensures your jewelry is safe and secure while in transit. The Cuyana Travel Jewelry Case earns the top spot in our books as the best travel jewelry case for its deceptively spacious interior and elegant genuine leather exterior. It also has a soft suede interior that will further protect your jewelry from getting scratches or scuffs while on the go. The only drawback is that this option doesn’t have latches for necklaces or bracelets which means any chains you plan to bring along might get tangled in the side pouches.

Best Money Belt

Raytix rfid money belt.

This breathable option won’t irritate the skin even with long-term use.

The belt is large enough to see when it’s under your clothes.

Shopping for a money belt can be daunting — you want something that’s secure and able to store your goods properly but it’s just as important to find something you can wear for hours on end. We found the Raytix Money Belt comfortable and smooth on the skin, while also noting that it can expand to accommodate many different sizes. The material also feels extremely sturdy and durable so you won’t have to worry about the bag wearing out, even after multiple trips.

Although we like that this money belt is large enough to accommodate bigger items (like a passport) without having to struggle to squeeze these in, the size is a little bit bulky and is actually visible with certain clothing types. This might not be ideal if you’re looking for something extremely discreet under a light layer, or a belt to pair with a travel dress .

Best Reusable Water Bottle

Thermoflask stainless steel water bottle.

This unique water bottle comes with two different lids to suit a variety of beverages.

The exterior might get a bit dinged up with heavy use.

When it comes to water bottles , the Thermoflask Double Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle is one of the best. It’s not flashy or overly expensive like other popular reusable water bottles on the market right now but it’s extremely durable and versatile. We really liked that this option comes with two different lids, one with a built-in straw and one that resembles a more traditional water bottle mouth. We also liked that this option was thin enough to fit in a standard cup holder and also very easy to grip.

During the testing process, we noticed that the stainless steel bottle did get a few aesthetic dings with heavy usage. That being said, the bottle didn’t leak at all nor did it become damaged beyond use throughout the entire process. This makes it well worth the price in our books.

Travel + Leisure / Conor Ralph

Best Noise-canceling Headphones

Bose noise cancelling headphones.

These headphones are intuitive to use and very comfortable to wear.

They don’t fit super tightly on the head.

If you’re willing to spend a bit of money on noise-cancelling headphones , this pair from Bose is going to be a great option. We find the price point totally justifiable as we could hear every instrument as clearly as if we were hearing the music live. We also really liked that the headphones offer different levels of noise cancellation depending on your preference and setting. (Plus, you can easily tap directly on the headphones to change the level or you can do it in the smartphone app.) We found a very dramatic difference from level 0 to level 10 which is great for transitioning from, say, walking in the city to settling into a sold-out red-eye flight. It’s worth noting that at the highest level of cancellation, the tester couldn’t hear a single thing so it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings.

These headphones also earned the top spot in our books due to the fact that they’re extremely comfortable and didn’t cause irritation even when wearing them for hours on end but that also means they don't fit as tightly as some others we tried.

Best Wireless Earbuds

Bose quietcomfort earbuds ii.

These earbuds are super fast-charging and easy to connect to all devices.

The size is a bit more bulky than comparable wireless earbuds.

During the testing process, it was clear that the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II were the best option out of all the competing products. The earbuds were extremely quick to charge and had a 16-hour battery life which is more than enough to get you through most flights or the day-to-day. We also found the wireless Bluetooth functionality was very efficient and easy to pair with everything from a smartphone to a Roku TV, plus the noise-canceling capabilities were sufficient for drowning out the subway sounds or city streets while on the go.

The main drawback we noticed with this set is the bulkier size; these earbuds are quite a bit larger than the average earbud and might take some getting used to. The good part is that they come with three different tip sizes so you can adjust the in-ear part of the bud to properly fit your ear.

Best Sunglasses for Women

Raen keera sunglasses.

They're stylish and well-priced for the quality.

These sunglasses aren’t polarized.

Few things are worse than getting to the airport and realizing you’ve forgotten your sunglasses (except perhaps realizing you’ve forgotten your passport). The Raen Keera Sunglasses are the shades we’re always packing in our carry-on bags. During the testing process, we found these were our favorite pair of sunglasses for women thanks to the comfortable and secure fit that doesn’t loosen or lose its integrity with regular wear. We also found that the oversized fit meant these shades didn’t pinch or rub at any point, and the arms weren’t sticky or hard to open and close. Keep in mind that this option isn’t polarized, which might not be the best choice if you have notably sensitive eyes.

  • PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Anna Mejorada
  • PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Morgan Ashley Parker

Best Sunglasses for Men

Huckberry weekenders.

They seamlessly block sun and glare.

The paint chips with heavy use.

Looking for a great pair of sunglasses for men that won’t break the bank while still protecting your peepers? The Huckberry Weekenders are our top pick as the best sunglasses for men . The stylish shades are lightweight and incredibly comfortable to wear (even for hours at a time) while the polarized lenses do a great job at blocking out all sun and glare so you can spend time in the sun without any discomfort or squinting. It’s worth noting that during the testing process, we found that these sunglasses do chip a bit over time if you don’t care for them gingerly.

Best Compression Socks

Levsox compression socks.

These offer great support in the arches and heels without feeling too tight.

The material is thinner than many other compression socks, which you might not enjoy if you're looking for something thick and sturdy.

Compression socks can help ward away stiffness and swelling during long periods of sitting, making them an essential item for travel in our book. Levsox is our favorite brand to turn to, offering socks that give just enough support without suffocating our feet. Some compression socks are uncomfortably tight, but these are easy to slip on and off, thanks to a lightweight material that feels silky against the skin. And if you're looking for a variety of colors and patterns, Levsox has you covered — you'll find everything from colorful tie dye to animal prints to nurse-themed patterns in each pack.

While the smooth material of these socks is comfortable, it may be a little thin for those used to wearing thicker or more padded socks throughout the day. Ultimately, this comes down to personal preference, so we're still excited to slip these on before a flight.

Best Car Phone Mount

Andobil car phone holder mount.

This car phone mount is very sturdy and won’t fall off once properly installed.

The installation process might involve some trial and error at first.

The Andobil Car Phone Holder Mount will be the last phone holder mount you’ll purchase — or at least that’s how we felt after trying this for ourselves. It can be set in any position once installed and it doesn’t wobble around or fall off. It also has space on the bottom for a charging cable and a built-in release button so you don’t have to worry about squeezing your phone in and out each time you leave your car.

The only downside we noticed was that the installation process might involve some trial and error. This phone holder mount has three different options for installation in your vehicle: there’s a suction cup using a 3M pad to stick on the dashboard or directly onto the windshield, or there’s a different attachment to click into the vent instead. This is great for variety’s sake but can mean trying out a few different methods to see what you like best.

Best Travel Adapter

Epicka universal travel adapter.

Its multi-functional design lets you charge six devices at once.

It’s not safe to use with things like hair dryers.

Charging devices while traveling can be a huge pain if you’re not prepared — and sometimes even when you think you are prepared. Seriously, how many times have you found yourself in a hotel room or Airbnb that seems to have one single outlet for the whole place? That’s why the Epicka Universal Travel Adapter is our most preferred travel adapter . This handy little cube can charge up to six devices at once thanks to its combination of USB-A and USB-C ports and AC sockets. It’s easy to switch prongs based on the countries you’re in, and it doesn’t require any additional attachments which makes it quick and easy to pack.

Best Luggage Tracker

Eufy smarttrack link.

It pairs seamlessly with iPhone and Android devices at a much lower cost.

The locator sound is a bit quiet.

Everyone talks about the benefits of AirTags while traveling — but we actually tested out a whole bunch of options and found the Eufy Smarttrack Link to be the best overall luggage tracker . This option seamlessly pairs with iPhone and Android devices, and is hassle-free and easy to use right from the get-go. This tracker is also nearly half the price of the leading competitors, which makes it an even sweeter deal. It’s also worth noting that the Eufy Smarttrack Link is equipped with a keyring hole in the upper corner which allows you to easily attach these onto a handbag or set of keys. The only downfall? The locator sound is a bit quiet, especially if it’s stuffed into the middle of a packed suitcase.

Travel + Leisure / Anna Popp

The Travel + Leisure team tests thousands of different travel accessories, gadgets, and gear both in our New York City lab and in the real world. Any products we test and like, we continue to test for at least another six months to best gauge exactly which items will hold up for the long term while on the road. We evaluate each product category using attributes like comfort, durability, and portability in order to rank which items work best for trips of all types, and our results from various tests lead to this best-of-the-bunch list.

Tips for Buying Travel Accessories

Prioritize usability.

There are a lot of really nifty travel accessories on the market, but when you’re shopping for your next trip you’ll want to really focus on usability over novelty (not to say unique and practical items don't exist). Consider whether or not each item is actually essential for your trip or the destinations you frequent. For example, if you always have to have a drink in hand then a drink caddy for your luggage and stroller could prove indispensable. You’ll also want to reference real-world reviews — like ours — to get an idea of how well a given item works and whether or not it’ll last through the rigors of regular travel. Your carry-on and checked luggage space is precious, so there’s no sense filling it with accessories that won’t streamline your experience.

Consider your trip length and type

Each trip will require a slightly different packing list so to avoid overpacking you’ll want to be sure to think about what each item will actually bring to the table. For example, if you’ve scored an upgrade to business class for your red-eye, you can probably leave your travel pillow at home this time. If you’re jetting off for a quick weekend trip, you likely won’t have to bother with packing cubes the same way you would for a multi-destination trip with different climates to consider.
