Millions of people every year travel from around the world to the City of Lights to watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle… but why? What makes Paris that much better than that of London, Dublin, Prague, or Barcelona?

Well, I’m here to show you all of the magical things that Paris has to offer that you won’t find in any of those other cities!

The list below contains 25 reasons to visit Paris, many of which you likely haven’t considered. Even if you aren’t sure about the luxurious cuisine or the sophisticated shopping, keep in mind that Paris has been named one of the most beautiful cities in the world for a reason…

Below, I’ve listed 25 great reasons why you should visit Paris .

You’re bound to agree with at least one of them, so be prepared to start booking your trip to Paris practically immediately after reading this post!

1. Why Visit Paris? Paris has Something for Everyone!

And I’m not saying this lightly…

Paris is one of the largest cities in Europe with over 20 different neighborhoods (or arrondissements ) to explore, each with its own unique personality.

For example, you can explore the 1 st arrondissement where you’ll find some of the top-rated museums in the world such as Le Louvre or you can make your way over to the 7 th arrondissement where you can stroll the gardens surrounding the Eiffel Tower!

From iconic landmarks , world-class museums , the ancient history of the Catacombs (which are particularly spooky around Halloween ), Michelin-star cuisine , one of the leading fashion industries in the world, and romantic ambiance , there is no doubt that Paris is an extremely diverse city with a lot going on.

Not interested in any of the activities I just mentioned? No problem! In Paris, it’s also completely acceptable to grab a blanket and read a book in the park, enjoy a cappuccino on the riverbank, or spend hours strolling through the Luxembourg Gardens.

No matter what feasts your fancy, Paris is an exciting destination for travelers of all kinds !

2. To Appreciate the Culture

Like I have said before, even if you don’t enjoy taking part in museums, attractions, and activities like taking a Seine River cruise , there is still a lot to marvel over in Paris.

Parisian culture is entirely unique from the rest of France, you see. You won’t find striped shirts and berets everywhere you look, but instead charming cobblestone streets , endless cigar and wine shops , and outdoor cafes as far as the eye can see.

French culture focuses on the small things: good wine , good food , and good people . As you have probably heard the stereotype, Parisians occasionally don’t have much patience for rude tourists… and why should they?

They’re simply looking to fill their days with friendly conversations and small delights . They’re very much like you and me, so even if you aren’t looking to sightsee for days on end, simply start a conversation with a local.

If you’re able to get out even just a few phrases in French , they will usually be delighted to chat with you! Just remember that not all Parisians know English or are bilingual, so you should do your best with learning some French if you can.

3. To Eat Fresh Baked Croissants and Baguettes…

Even if you don’t claim to be a “foodie” traveler or haven’t heard much about France’s Michelin-star cuisine, there is no denying that the food in France is some of the best in the entire world .

The smell of freshly baked croissants and baguettes fills the streets of Paris on a daily basis! Traditionally served at breakfast with butter or local jams, these flaky treats are a true source of happiness for Parisians and tourists alike.

Beyond the art of puff pastry, however, is an entire world known as the French art of cooking! Soft, chewy baguettes with a browned, crisp exterior are paired with local meats and cheeses for a heavenly lunch or evening snack.

Bakeries and patisserie shops are overflowing with delicate creations while streetside cafes are serving up hot and bubbly croque monsieurs. The French are known for their ingenious use of butter , so I suggest leaving your diet at home …

4. To Find Yourself Swooning Over the Fashion

I for one was never really interested in fashion… at least until I saw how well-dressed all of the Parisian locals were! It isn’t unnatural to see most people wearing business casual outfits (i.e. a blouse, pencil skirt, and flats for the ladies and khakis and a collared shirt for the men.)

The Champs-Élysées is one of the most glamorous and sophisticated shopping districts in the entire world with many of the latest trends being featured in the annual Paris Fashion Week (a very prestigious event).

Although many of the shops on the Champs-Élysées may be a bit out of your price range (a typical blouse can start as high as 200 euros …), that doesn’t mean you won’t find some exceptional pieces of clothing all around the city for great deals.

Simply peruse the local shops on many of the small, cobblestone side streets and you’ll be rocking some high-end Paris fashion in no time!

5. Why Visit Paris? To Enjoy the Romantic Ambiance!

Also known as “ the City of Love “, Paris is one of the most romantic cities in the world. If you’re asking yourself, “why visit Paris?”, and can’t seem to think that you’ll enjoy much of the sights, attractions, or culture, come for the romance – I promise, it’ll take your breath away!

From the iconic architecture to the city’s beautiful array of evening lights, everywhere you look there is something to “ooh” and “ahh” at.

It’s the perfect destination to visit solo and find yourself learning more about your personal interests and self than ever before. It’s also wonderful for couples who want to enjoy an elegant dinner under the dazzling lights of the Eiffel Tower or a quiet evening walk along the Seine.

No matter your reasons for visiting Paris, the romance will stand out to you once you spend just a short amount of time walking Paris at night !

6. To Take Advantage of Its Prime Location

Say you ask yourself “why visit Paris?” countless times and you really can’t seem to find anything you think you’ll enjoy, then at least come and use it as the perfect starting point to another trip!

Paris is one of the most popular starting locations for European itineraries across Europe. You can use it as just an arrival point for exploring the rest of France, or even the rest of Europe!

From Paris, you’ll find high-speed trains that will take you all over France as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Germany, and more! There is truly no end to where you can go from Paris, so even if you aren’t sure about visiting, use its prime location as a reason for visiting Paris.

After all, you may just find along your short travels through the French capital that you wish to return and see more of this amazing city!

7. To Fall in Love with the Language

I studied French for seven years and to this day still find it to be charming , strong , and romantic all at the same time!

Everywhere you go in Paris, you will hear at least one person around you speaking French at all times. The French language flows swiftly (due to this, most people speak French very fast) and has a strong focus on soft consonants and vowels which makes for easy transitions .

I personally love listening to French everywhere I go… so much so that I decided to pick it back up again in my spare time. Whether or not you plan to do the same, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most commonly used languages across Europe (and even the world!)

It flows quite romantically and after all… it’s called “the language of love ” for a reason.

8. It’s Beautiful in Every Season

If you’ve been reading any Paris travel journals or guidebooks lately, you have probably heard that the best time to visit Paris is in the summers when the weather is at its warmest and businesses are in full swing.

But, I don’t quite agree with that stance… Paris is beautiful all throughout the year ! In my article linked above, I go more in-depth about why the spring and fall shoulder seasons are the best time to visit Paris, however, there are wonderful pros to visiting any time of the year.

In the summers, yes you’ll find great weather and lots of festivals, but there will also be tens of thousands more tourists and long lines at all of the restaurants and attractions.

In the shoulder seasons, you’re more likely to experience some rain (I actually find Paris in the rain quite romantic), but accommodation and travel rates have dropped and most of the tourists have left the city providing you with the ultimate local experience!

In the winters, you can find an ice skating rink inside the Eiffel Tower as well as endless Christmas markets serving up hot, mulled wine and exquisite handmade crafts and hand-painted ornaments.

If “why visit Paris” is still coming up in your conversations, just remember that no matter when you decide to visit Paris, it will be beautiful !

9. To Discover the World-Renowned Museums

Paris is home to some of the most impressive museums in Europe! Whether you’re an art or history buff looking to explore every nook and cranny of the incredible exhibits on offer, or are simply a tourist looking to get a selfie with the famous Mona Lisa painting, I’m certain that there is something here you will find interesting.

If the ladder is more your style, be sure to book your Louvre tickets online in advance and make note of any Covid-19 precautions they have.

There are also dozens of museums worth exploring… over 125 to be exact!

Explore some mid-19 th -century French sculptures at the Musée d’Orsay located in a former railway station or stroll the halls of the Musée de Cluny which can be found in the Abbey House and contains dozens of impressive tapestries from the 15 th century!

10. Why Visit Paris? To Cruise the Seine River!

To walk the streets of Paris is one thing, but to navigate the mighty Seine via cruise line is another! Whether you’re looking for an exciting and adventurous Parisian experience or are simply hoping to sit back and relax as someone else takes you around the French capital, both can be done on a Seine cruise.

While they do have boat tours operating at all hours of the day, the evening ones in the summers are particularly delightful. Enjoy a rooftop dinner while gliding by the Eiffel Tower, then relax in a chair with a blanket and a glass of wine as you watch all of the sparkling city lights glisten on the river.

Seine River cruises are quite popular among tourists, so I suggest doing some research ahead of time on the local companies and what the ride includes. Advanced bookings are also recommended to prevent any disappointment!

11. To Enjoy an Apéritif at a Streetside Cafe

You’ve heard me say it before, but Paris isn’t only known for its outstanding attractions and beautiful scenery. It’s also well known for its numerous outdoor cafes boasting everything from waiters dressed in black tie to more relaxed cafes with wine carafes and fresh French bread.

Even if you aren’t interested in spending your time waltzing back and forth across bridges in search of famed gardens and prestigious stores, there is a lot of good to be had while enjoying an apéritif at a streetside cafe!

Meet the locals, relish in the simplicity of people-watching, and sample the refreshing local beverages offered in Paris.

Apéritifs also pair well with local meats, cheeses, fondue, and breads, as well as some patisseries and desserts like crème brûlée. So, why visit Paris? Because it’s one of the best places in the world to enjoy a beverage on its charming side streets with friendly locals!

12. You can Visit on Any Budget

Whether you plan on visiting on a backpacker’s budget or have extensive funding for your travels, Paris has you covered.

You can find everything from shared dormitories in hostels with singular bathrooms per floor to luxurious presidential suites with views of the Eiffel Tower on the top floor of a grand hotel. No matter how you wish to experience Paris, you can be sure to find something in your price range .

If you don’t believe me when I say you truly can visit on ANY budget, I visited when I was in college with just my work-study money to my name… if I can do it on that tight of a budget, so can you!

13. To Have a Picnic

If you enjoy relaxing in the sun on a comfortable blanket with a glass of wine or coffee, a good book, and either just yourself or friends, then a picnic in Paris needs to be on your bucket list .

As you may already know, Paris has several excellent parks to do this on. The Luxembourg Gardens are one of the most popular places to do this, but since the art of “ picnicking ” is quite common among tourists and locals alike, there are lots of places to soak up some sun.

The Jardin des   Tuileries , or the Tuileries Garden, is on the right bank just across from the Orsay Museum and offers one of the best local parks in Paris! Backed by two museums, a fun ferris wheel, and a beautiful, central fountain, you can’t go wrong by choosing to lay your blanket here.

There are also plenty of others including the Champ de Mars (the lawn in front of the Eiffel Tower) and the Parc Monceau in the 8 th arrondissement.

14. Why Visit Paris? To Watch the Eiffel Tower Sparkle!

Most people only ever see pictures or movies with the Eiffel Tower sparkling in all its glory, but you could be one of the few that gets to see it in person!

When thinking of all of the reasons to visit Paris, seeing the Eiffel Tower do its phenomenal light show after dark should be high on your list. It’s a spectacular sight to see and is also quite romantic!

The light show happens every hour on the hour after dark and lasts for 5 minutes, so if you’re planning on popping a very special question to a very special someone, you really couldn’t ask for a better time.

If you were hoping for a little more privacy for your special moment, I suggest finding a quiet side street with excellent views of the light show, but without all of the people… you can usually find some all around the 7th arrondissement !

15. To Slow Down Time

The Parisians not only know how to party in style, but also how to relax like nobody’s business. Spend your days strolling the city parks, enjoying the flora and fauna of the Luxembourg Gardens, or walking along the Seine!

Paris is the perfect place to sit back and enjoy a glass of wine while people-watching at a quaint streetside cafe. So, why visit Paris, you ask?

Because you can literally spend hours on end “ sightseeing ” when you’re really just walking between patisseries seeking out the best croissant in Paris.

A weekend in Paris is the ultimate way to let all of your “normal life” stresses melt away. Instead of worrying about getting between destinations quickly, spend some time sampling the cheese and wine, listening to the church bells of the Notre Dame, and even sitting on a Seine River cruise.

It may just be the most relaxing place of your whole vacation!

Paris really is unlike anywhere else in the world. With dozens of European cities and towns under my belt, I’ve never seen or heard of another place where you can see such beauty and charm while simultaneously enjoying unparalleled cuisine and elegance.

Paris offers incredible attractions and activities for travelers of all budgets , while also maintaining its high level of sophistication and unchangeable culture. And with its dozens of Michelin-star restaurants, calling Paris “luxurious” is a vast understatement.

Whether you’re looking for a cozy, candlelit dinner in the snow or a lively nightclub with an exotic dance floor and trendy cocktails, Paris has it all !

Even if you don’t really have an answer to the question, “why visit Paris?”, you should visit for at least a few days to appreciate how different it is from any other European city and almost all other cities in the world.

Outside of its famous landmarks and impressive museums, Paris is home to some of the most amazing sights I have ever seen.

By simply walking the streets of this French city, you can come across street artists painting Mona Lisa’s on the sidewalk, guitarists singing on the cobblestones, boats gliding by the Eiffel Tower, and two lovers placing a lock on one of the many bridges all over the city.

I found Paris to be full of different personalities and people from all over the world who came together to be in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

You can also find charming outdoor markets, marvelous book stores, and everything in between. While Paris is often recognized for its iconic landmarks, renowned museums, and Michelin-star cuisine, it has far more to offer than that!

You just need to slow down and take a look at the smaller things going on around you. If you’re wondering why you should visit Paris, consider going just for its magical ambiance and beautiful sights everywhere you look!

18. Why Visit Paris? To Learn About Its History!

Did you know that Paris began all the way back in the 3 rd century ? And that there are underground ossuaries holding the remains of over six million people beneath the city? I didn’t before I visited.

During the Revolution and the city’s multitude of tragic wars, Parisians who were killed were brought underground to a place now known as the Catacombs of Paris . Today, you can visit these ossuaries and witness the millions of skulls that have been artfully placed throughout the tunnels.

Throughout the city’s museums, you can also find information dating back to hunter-gatherers making claims to the land during the 9 th century and see how the French capital transformed over time into the bustling, cultural metropolis it is today.

Even for those who don’t call themselves “history enthusiasts”, the history of Paris is no doubt interesting and surprising to most!

Many people from all around the world dream to travel to Paris one day. And that isn't for no reason. This gorgeous city in France is unlike any other place in the world.

There are so many reasons why you should visit Paris. It's the best city to go to if you want to have to most romantic time of your life.

But even though people know it as a romantic city, it's also great to travel there if you're not looking for romance.

Whether you're going to Paris with your partner, your friends, or by yourself, this city is amazing!

When I went to Paris the first time, it was even better than I ever thought it would be. The Eiffel Tower was more impressive than I imagined. And the endless amount of cute streets surprised me.

Paris has great sights, lovely cafes, interesting history and so much more. So I made this list of the most important reasons to visit Paris!

1. It's very romantic

One of the best reasons to visit Paris is that it's a very romantic city. Many people know Paris as the City of Love.

Paris is so romantic because of many reasons. The city is very charming. There are lots of cute streets and cafes. And there are great sights to see with your partner.

One of the most romantic things in Paris is the Eiffel Tower. You can see the Eiffel Tower from several parts of the city. One of the best views of the Eiffel Tower is at Trocadéro. The Iron Lady looks wonderful from there.

Seeing the Eiffel Tower is always romantic. But seeing a sunrise there is even better! So if you like waking up early, I’d definitely recommend seeing sunrise at the Eiffel Tower. 

As Paris is so romantic, many proposals take place there. When you're in Paris, there's a high chance you will see some women in their wedding dresses. That's because the city is very popular for romantic photoshoots. 

2. There are great viewpoints

Paris has some breathtaking viewpoints. Seeing one of the views is amazing which is another one of the reasons to visit Paris.

One of the most famous places to get a view is at the Eiffel Tower. Getting to the top of the Eiffel Tower is very fun. You can either climb the stairs or take the elevator.

From there, you have a wonderful view of the city.

But there are more amazing viewpoints which are also why you should visit Paris! For example, you can also climb the Sacré-Cœur. Few people know that, but it's an amazing experience.

When you climb the Sacré-Cœur, you have an incredible view of the city. It's even better than the view from the Eiffel Tower. One of the reasons why I love this view so much is that you can also see the Eiffel Tower from there.

Furthermore, you can get a view from the Arc de Triomphe as well. I'd recommend seeing this view at night. Then, you can see the lights of the city. It looks wonderful!

3. There are wonderful cafes

Paris is also famous for its lovely cafes. Going to one of the cafes is such a great experience! This is also why you should visit Paris. You can sit at a Parisian cafe for hours. Watch people going by, have some coffee, and enjoy your time in the City of Love! 

When you’re in Paris for the first time, you’ll immediately notice that there are many lovely cafes. You can sit both inside and outside. If it’s cold outside, don’t worry, most cafes have heaters! 

You can have an amazing time at a Parisian cafe, which is one of the reasons to visit Paris.

Sitting at a Parisian cafe is very relaxing. There are many amazing cafes, so you don’t have to go to a particular one. You can stroll around in the city and you’ll definitely stumble upon a cafe you can go to!

A very special cafe in Paris is Le Café Marly . It’s very unique as you have a wonderful view of the Louvre from there! 

If you’re planning on visiting the Louvre, it’s fun to have some coffee here before you go there.

But even if you’re not going to the Louvre, I’d recommend having coffee at this cafe! It’s incredible to have coffee with a view of one of the most famous buildings in the world.

4. You find there some of the best museums in the world

In the city, you can find some of the best museums in the world! This is another reason to visit Paris. 

One of the most famous museums in the world is the Louvre . The Louvre has a very impressive collection. It's the largest art museum on earth. You can see almost 40,000 objects in the Louvre! This is so impressive. 

For example, there is art from ancient Egypt. But you can also find objects from the Roman and Greek eras there. And there’s so much more to see! 

One of the things you should see in the Louvre is the Mona Lisa. This is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci and it's the most famous artwork in the museum.

As the museum is very large, it's hard to see everything in a day. For that reason, it's fun to go there several times. 

Another great museum in the city is Musee d'Orsay. Here, you can find French art. For example, there are artworks from Van Gogh, Monet, and many others. 

When you're in Paris, you can also visit Musée Picasso. You can see many works by Pablo Picasso. There are more than 5,000 objects here!

Furthermore, Musée Rodin is another nice museum in Paris. There, you can find artworks that sculptor Rodin made. Many people know him as "The Thinker". 

In short, there are many great museums, which is one of the reasons why you should visit Paris!

5. There are baguettes and croissants

Another reason why you should visit Paris is that there are baguettes and croissants! Baguettes and croissants are very typical for France. And they are so delicious!

There are many bakeries in the city where you can find them. But you can also buy them at grocery stores. I’d recommend getting them at a bakery.

One of the best things to do in the city is having breakfast at a lovely Parisian bakery. There, you can try food that Parisians have as breakfast, such as baguettes and croissants! It’s definitely a great way to experience the city a bit like a local. 

Also, you can order pastries there! You should definitely have some macarons. Macarons are very typical for Paris too. They are very delicious and definitely worth trying. And they look beautiful! 

I always eat many baguettes when I’m in Paris because they are very delicious. It’s also great to have it when you’re walking through the city.

6. Paris is great in every season

Another one of the reasons to visit Paris is that the city is great every season! Every season is unique and has its own advantages.

Visiting Paris in winter is great because the city turns into a Christmas movie. You can see wonderful decorations everywhere!

Furthermore, you can even go ice skating inside and next to the Eiffel Tower. When it's snowing in Paris, the city looks magical! 

Also, when it’s cold outside, it’s amazing to go to a Parisian cafe to warm up.

It’s also great to experience spring in Paris. In spring, there are blossoms everywhere! It’s so magical to see the Eiffel Tower when there are wonderful flowers in the city.

Furthermore, the weather in spring is great. It’s not too hot and not too cold. So that’s perfect!

Going to Paris in the summer is fun as well. You’ll definitely have an amazing summer in the city. The weather is very good in that season. Get some ice cream while enjoying the beautiful city!

Fall in Paris is incredible too. It’s magical to see the leaves fall in the City of Love. There are places where you can see the Eiffel Tower between the trees, which looks incredible. 

Every season in Paris is unique in its own way. But all are incredible! So whenever you want to go to Paris, you’ll have a great time for sure.

7. Shopping

If you want to go shopping, this is one of the most important reasons why you should visit Paris. Paris has so many great shops!

One of the best places to go to is the Champs-Élysées. This is one of the most famous streets in the world! You can find many shops here. It's a very long and wide street. Besides shops, there are also theaters and cafes. You should see this street for sure. 

But besides that, Paris is famous for its covered passages. Shopping there is even more fun than in the large shopping streets. That's because the passages are so charming! And there are also some cute cafes in the passages. 

My favorite one is the Passage des Panoramas. This is the oldest covered passage in Paris and it's there since 1799.

The atmosphere in this passage is great. Moreover, going here is definitely a great idea when it's raining in Paris.

8. It looks beautiful

Another one of the reasons to visit Paris is that it's beautiful! If you want to see a magnificent city, this is definitely why you should visit Paris.

There are lots of gorgeous places in Paris. One of the prettiest sights is the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower looks very beautiful during the day. But in the evening, it’s also wonderful! Then, the Eiffel Tower lights up. This is so pretty.

Montmartre is a magnificent neighborhood in Paris. The streets in Montmartre are very charming. Besides that, there are some pretty buildings there. For example, La Maison Rose is a beautiful pink building in Montmartre.

If you love colors, then Paris has something amazing for you! Rue Crémieux is a very colorful street in the city. There are pink. blue, green, and yellow houses. It's gorgeous!

Another very pretty place in Paris is Odette. The building is green, black, and white. It looks wonderful and Odette sells delicious pastries!

9. You can see movie locations in real life

So many movies took place in Paris! So if you like seeing movie locations in real life, Paris is a great city to visit. One of the movies is Inception. Part of it took place at the Bir-Hakeim Bridge in Paris. This is a very beautiful bridge to see.

Other movies are Hugo, The Da Vinci Code, Before Sunset and so much more! 

Furthermore, in the city, you can also see locations of the popular Netflix show Emily in Paris.

I’d definitely recommend watching this show before going to Paris. The show is so much fun and it’s a great way to get excited about your trip!

10. The metro network is incredible

Paris is also famous for its incredible metro network. The network is very impressive. There are 16 lines and Paris has over 300 stations! There are transfers between lines at more than 60 of the stations. 

The metro in Paris is very fast. And it’s a convenient way to travel through the city. 

If you’re going to Paris, you should definitely travel by metro. It’s such a fun experience.

All metro lines in Paris are great. But one of them is very unique. That’s metro line 6! Metro line 6 is one of the reasons to visit Paris.

This metro line is incredible because it has a wonderful view of the Eiffel Tower! It's only for a few seconds, but it's an amazing experience. The Eiffel Tower looks so pretty!

It's very unique to see such a famous sight from the metro. So I'd definitely recommend riding metro line 6 when you're in Paris.

11. Sing along with songs about Paris when you're there

There are tons of songs about Paris. For example, there are even more than twenty songs about the Champs Élysées! 

It's very fun to listen to songs about the City of Love. For example, Paris by The Chainsmokers is such a nice song. I love the lyrics and the melody. But there are so many other beautiful songs.

Singing along with these songs is fun. But it’s even better to sing along with the songs about Paris in the city itself!

So if you love music, this is definitely why you should visit Paris.

12. There are lots of high-speed trains going to other parts of France

France has a great train network. For that reason, it’s very easy to travel to other places in France from Paris. There are lots of high-speed trains! This is amazing, so it's one of the reasons to visit Paris.

For example, you can get from Paris to Nice. Nice is a lovely city on the French Riviera. There, you can find a beach and an amazing shopping street. From Nice, you can travel to other places in the French Riviera. For example, you can go to Monaco and Menton. Both are very beautiful.

You can also get to Strasbourg from Paris. Or you can go to Bordeaux. Furthermore, Marseille is a great option as well!

13. Amazing sights

One of the reasons why you should visit Paris is that there are amazing sights! You can find many famous landmarks in the city.

I already mentioned the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is definitely the most famous sight in Paris. And it’s one of the most famous sights in the world.

But there’s so much more to see in Paris.

For example, the Arc de Triomphe is a wonderful monument to see. It's one of the most famous sights in the city. It's at one end of the Champs-Élysées. The Arc de Triomphe is large, making it very impressive.

You can learn a lot about the history of France at the Arc de Triomphe. That's because the monument honors people who fought and died for the country. It’s about the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. 

You can also see the Notre-Dame in the city. This is a medieval cathedral in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. In 2019, there was a large fire on the roof of the cathedral. You can still see the cathedral, but the fire destroyed parts of it. 

Sacré-Cœur is also one of the best things to see in the city. You can find it in Montmartre. It's very interesting to see the Sacré-Cœur if you love architecture.

The construction of the cathedral began in 1875 and it was ready in 1914. Furthermore, you can go inside the cathedral. It's so beautiful to see it from the inside as well! 

The Palais-Royal is another wonderful sight in the city. It's a former royal palace and it looks incredible. Those who love history and architecture will love this place!

These were only a few examples, but there are many more sights! Whether you’re in Paris for a day or for weeks, it never gets boring.

14. Wonderful hotels

Paris has several wonderful hotels. If you love luxury, then you’ll find amazing accommodation in the city.

There are several hotels with a view of the Eiffel Tower. It’s so romantic to wake up, look out of your window and see the Eiffel Tower! Or you can book a hotel room with a terrace. There, you can have breakfast with a view of Paris.

When you’re on a budget, you can also find a great place to stay in Paris. There are several hotels that are very affordable. You can also book a bed in a hostel, which is even more affordable.

15. You can get a beautiful painting of yourself

One of the most charming places in Paris is Place du Tertre. This is a lovely square in Montmartre. Here, you can see beautiful art. And you can also buy art.

If you want to have a beautiful artwork to take home, then I'd definitely recommend going there! There are lots of paintings from Paris that look wonderful.

But besides that, you can get a wonderful painting of yourself at Place du Tertre. There are many artists who can do that for you. They will make it on the spot. It's such a great experience! And it's incredible how talented the artists are.

You can get a painting of yourself, but also of you and your partner. Or a painting of you and your best friends. This is one of the most fun things you can buy in the city. And it's a lovely memory of your trip to Paris!

16. The food

In Paris, you can have delicious food! If you love good dishes, then this is one of the reasons to visit Paris.

The dishes from French cuisine are amazing. And there are so many great restaurants in Paris .

One of the best places for dinner in Paris is Bouillon Chartier. Here you can have a very luxurious experience, but it's not expensive at all! So if you're in Paris on a budget, going here is amazing.

The restaurant is so good, that there's almost always a long queue. So keep in mind to be there early if you don't want to wait very long.

Another restaurant I love is Hank Burgers. The food at this place is vegan and it's so delicious! They have very good burgers, and you should also try the potatoes. Furthermore, Hank Burgers looks lovely from the inside! 

There are two Hank Burgers in Paris. Both of the restaurants have free wifi, so that's convenient.

17. There are great parks

Another reason why you should go to Paris is the great number of beautiful parks in the city. You find them everywhere!

One of the best parks is the Jardin du Luxembourg. It is a very old park made in 1612. Nowadays, it is a great place to relax and there are many activities.

Another great park is the Jardin des Tuileries. You find this park between the Louvre Museum and the Champs-Élysées. It is a great place for a relaxing stroll.

Nature looks amazing here. There are several great statues and there is a beautiful fountain.

But these are only two examples, there are many more parks in Paris that are worth visiting.

1. Famous landmarks

When people think of Paris, they most likely picture its famous landmarks. Paris has many stunning sights that showcase impressive architecture and design, and these places have become world-famous for their beauty.

The ample photo opportunities are some of the most popular reasons to visit Paris for travelers, writers, artists and bloggers. 

Here are some notable landmarks in Paris that draw tourists to the city:

The eiffel tower.

As one of the most famous monuments in the entire world , the Eiffel Tower has become a symbol of Paris. Made of wrought iron and standing 324 meters tall, the Eiffel Tower is a sight to see. At night time the tower lights up in shimmering gold, and there are nice gardens surrounding the tower that make for a once-in-a-lifetime picnic spot.

Tickets to enter and climb the Eiffel Tower vary; it costs €7 if you are willing to climb the stairs and €11 to take the elevator, and there are different prices for different age groups . The line also gets very long, so try to arrive early.

The Louvre Museum

The Louvre is the largest art museum in the world , but even those who aren't interested in art will stop here to witness the incredible design of the massive building and take pictures with the pyramids. 

There is one large pyramid and three smaller ones, the largest one being the main entrance to the museum and all four are constructed of glass and metal. Tourists love to pose on the concrete blocks around the Louvre courtyard and pose with the iconic pyramids.

It costs €15 to enter the Louvre Museum, and it is completely free to hang out in the courtyard and admire the building .

Notre Dame Cathedral

This medieval Gothic cathedral has become known as a symbol of Paris , and there has even been a Disney movie set in the cathedral (The Hunchback of Notre Dame). 

Construction of the cathedral began in 1160, though it has had its ups and downs throughout history. Nowadays, it stands tall and magnificent and is a huge draw to anyone who loves impressive architecture and photo opportunities.

It costs €8,50 to enter Notre Dame, though there is usually a very long line so try to arrive early .

Arc De Triomphe

Located at the end of the famous shopping street, Avenue des Champs-Élysées, this massive arch commemorates the soldiers who fought in the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. It has become a well-known national monument of France , and you can climb about 280 stairs to get to the top for an amazing view over the city. 

It costs €12 to enter the Arc De Triomphe and climb to the top, though it is free to admire the landmark from the outside .

Sacré-Cœur Basilica

Also known as the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris , this Roman Catholic Church stands at the highest point in the city and is known for its towering white domes. 

It is located on top of Montmartre Hill , which is a charming area full of history and art. The Sacré-Cœur Basilica is a relatively new landmark in Paris; construction began in the late 1800s and the church was completed in 1914.

It is free to enter Sacre Coeur basilica, though you can pay €5 to climb to the very top if you would like.

The Palais Garnier

This monument is a giant opera house that is arguably one of the most impressive buildings in Paris . 

Built-in the 1800s, this magnificent building has hosted so many operas, ballets, and other artistic performances and it is a huge part of Parisian history and culture. 

This opera house was also used as the setting for the famous novel, The Phantom Of The Opera , which has now become a Broadway musical and major motion picture film.

You can take a guided tour of Palais Garnier to learn all there is to know about this significant building .

2. Amazing French food

One of the best reasons to visit Paris is easily the food. French cuisine has earned itself a place on the list of best cuisines in the world, and foodies from all over the globe travel to France just for the food.

To prove how amazing the French are at cooking, they even invented the prestigious Michelin Star rating system that measures the quality of the best restaurants all over the world.

But you don't have to dine out at Michelin-star restaurants to get a taste of French cuisine . There are some staple French dishes that you can find in restaurants of all price ranges .

Some French classics to try include Soupe à l'oignon, a heartwarming beef stock and onion soup commonly known as french onion Soup, Bouillabaisse, a fish and seafood stew, Steak-Frites, pan sautéed steak with french fries, and Beef Bourguignon, beef cooked with red wine and mushrooms. Musée d'Orsay showcases famous french art from the 1800s and 1900s, including works of art by famous artists Monet, Manet, Degas, and Van Gogh.

Centre Pompidou has lots of different exhibitions and art collections on view, and it has a very impressive display of modern art.

Musée National Picasso has thousands of artworks by the famous Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, and is set inside the Hôtel Salé.

Petit Palais  is a stunning building that houses the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts. This art collection is free to enter and has forms of art including painting, sculpture, and even furniture and antiques.

Musee du Quai Branly showcases a very diverse range of indigenous art from Oceania, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, thus enlightening visitors about different cultures and their histories.

6. Parks and gardens

For such a massive city, Paris has plenty of green spaces designed to break up the stuffiness of the metropolis. These beautiful gardens make the city feel more open, and they make for lovely stops during a day of exploring.

You may stumble across some of the more centrally-located parks by accident, or you can pack a bag and head to one of the further parks for a day of enjoying nature. Either way, the green spaces of Paris are simply stunning and they make the city feel so much more enjoyable.

The abundance of spacious parks is definitely some of the best reasons for families to visit Paris  because they can take their kids here to let off some steam. There is plenty of space for family picnics and sports games, so if you are traveling as a family then stopping by a park is a must.

Bois de vincennes.

This is the largest green space in Paris and was created in the 1800s by Napoleon III. In addition to the peaceful gardens, here you can also find a zoo, a botanical garden, a racing track, and other eye-catching monuments. 

I recommend coming here for a day and bringing some snacks and a blanket so you can just wander around and soak in the relaxing energy.

The Tuileries Gardens

These stunning gardens were created in 1564 but were originally only designed for royalty. After the French Revolution, the area became a public park and it is now one of the most beautiful areas to stroll through in Paris. It is located near the Louvre and makes a wonderful stop during a day of sightseeing.

Parc des Buttes-Chaumont

In northeastern Paris you'll find this large public park full of green grass and trails perfect for running, walking, or cycling. There is a vast artificial lake inside the park which has a 50-meter-high cliff in the center. If you want to feel like you are really in the woods and not in the middle of one of the world's biggest cities, then come here!

The Luxembourg Gardens

Inspired by the beautiful Boboli Gardens of Florence, the Luxembourg Gardens exude an aura of luxury and designs. With landscaped gardens, rich green grass, fountains, lots of flowers, and the Luxembourg Palace just nearby, you may feel like royalty while hanging out in this park.

Bois de Boulogne

As one of the biggest parks in Paris , this green space is more than double the size of Central Park in NYC. There is a beautiful lake here as well as lots of space for having picnics, playing frisbee, or just taking a tap in the soft grass.

Trocadéro Gardens

This charming green space is located just across from the Eiffel Tower, so it is a nice place to relax and take some photos of the iconic landmark. This park is most famous for the Fountain of Warsaw, which is a long pool filled with fountains that create a beautiful scene.

7. Fun day trips

If you have more than a few days to spend in Paris, why not venture outside the city for a day? Paris is surrounded by lots of natural beauty and historical landmarks, so if you've seen all there is to see, take a day trip so you can experience more of France.

Funny that some of the best reasons to visit Paris are located outside Paris! But day trips are a great way to explore a new country without having to spend lots of money.

Here are some fun day trips to take from Paris:

The palace of versailles.

With construction starting in 1631, the Palace of Versailles is famous for housing a few of France's past leaders. The ground originally served as a hunting lodge and chateau for Louis XIII, and later on, Louis XIV lived here until the French Revolution started in 1789.

After the French Revolution, the palace had a turbulent history; it was used for many different roles by many different French leaders.

Nowadays, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a historical monument that travelers from all over the world come to visit. The palace has stunning decorations and rooms that exude regality. The landscaped gardens outside are massive and aesthetically pleasing, full of fountains and sculptures. A highlight of the palace is the Hall of Mirrors.

The Palace of Versailles is only 30 minutes away from Paris, and you can either take the train, or the bus or book a group tour.

Mont Saint-Michel

This is the most-visited tourist attraction in Normandy  and makes a lovely day trip from Paris. Mont Saint-Michel is a tiny island located about 1 km off of France's northwestern coast.

Though this used to be a pilgrimage center and is mainly a religious site, anyone can come and admire the hilltop monastery surrounded by the sea. The monastery is known as the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey , and there are a few monks and nuns who live inside the Abbey. It costs €10 to enter the Abbey .

At high tide, the island appears to be floating in the water, and at low tide, you can walk along the sand, right up to the edge of the attraction. Wear comfortable walking shoes while visiting here as you'll have to climb lots of hills and stairs to reach the height of Mont Saint-Michel.

It takes about three hours by train to travel from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel. You can easily do this in a day if you are short on time, but if you don't want to rush you can even stay overnight in a town near the island and return to Paris the next day.

Claude Monet's Gardens in Giverny

Located in the charming town of Giverny in Normandy, the Fondation Claude Monet has worked hard to preserve the residence of this famous painter.

As one of the founders of the French Impressionist movement, Claude Monet's paintings are smooth, colorful, and simply gorgeous. Even if you are not an art fanatic, this day trip can still be fun because the area is so beautiful.

The village of Giverny served as a commonplace of inspiration for other French painters, Édouard Manet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Giverny also has an American Museum of Art and plenty of nice cafes and restaurants.

Claude Monet lived in the village of Giverny from 1883 to 1926, and his picturesque house and gardens have been well-kept. There are plenty of colorful flowers and a Japanese Bridge, and many other scenes that seemed to appear in Claude Monet's paintings.

You can visit Giverny either by train or car from Paris, or you can book a tour.

Paris Disneyland

Though Disneyland is actually in Paris, people normally spend a whole day here so I think it fits better under the category of day trips. 

Those who have already visited Disneyland in the USA may not be interested in this, but if provides a super fun and exciting day for those who have never experienced the magic of Disneyland. 

Disney is very near and dear to many people's hearts, as the movies and characters grew up with us throughout our childhood. Spending a day meeting all the characters and riding roller coasters and other rides makes you feel like a kid again. 

You can also head to the Walt Disney Studio Park to watch performances and behind-the-scenes shows. If you are traveling with a family, this is a great place to visit as it has entertainment for all ages. 

From the city center, you can take a shuttle, train, or metro to Paris Disneyland . 

8. Worldpackers experiences

Past travelers say this is a great place to relax and connect with nature , so during your time off you can explore the landscape or enjoy some peace and quiet with a book. 

If you want to explore some different parts of the country, head south to the city of Montpellier. Here, you can volunteer at an eco-village , or work as a web developer or event organizer . There is also an interesting experience here for  renewable energy youth training , only if you are a French or Dutch resident though.

Not many travellers are asking themselves is Paris worth visiting we all know the answer to that question… mais oui ! But of course!

Most travellers want to know the reasons to visit Paris France before they go. If that’s you, then keep reading.

I should confess something to you, Paris is my favourite city. Yes, I am quite literally Paris obsessed! I’ve visited Paris 10 times and still can’t get enough!

Is Paris overrated? Not in my books! But I do understand why some travellers don’t share the same perspective as I do. Paris is a decisive city – either travellers love it or loathe it.

That’s why I will focus on reasons why Paris is worth visiting – for its history, architecture, landmarks and more. I will also share why the city of Paris is often dismissed as being overrated.

Is Paris Worth Visiting?

Paris is absolutely worth visiting!

This capital city lives up to its reputation as the “City of Love” and “City of Light” with its undeniable charm.

It’s quintessentially chic, utterly romantic and is a movie that unfolds right in front of you.

The only way to fall in love with Paris is to do as little as possible.

It’s a city that has many layers to it. Where its history has shaped the Paris we see today. The more you know about it, the more you can appreciate its beauty.

You have to peel back those layers. That means, seeing more than its top attractions like the Eiffel Tower.

This is a city for dreamers. For curious souls that love to get lost in its streets.

If that’s you, then you shouldn’t be asking yourself if it is worth visiting Paris; rather you should be asking yourself how soon can I plan my trip and go to Paris ?

3 Myths Why Paris Is Considered Overrated

I know what you’re thinking… is Paris worth the hype? You’re not alone in thinking that way – just watch my Google Web Story.

Misperceptions can often cloud our judgement when it comes to exploring new destinations.

That’s why I want to challenge these notions and unravel the truth (from my perspective, of course). I want to address three common myths about Paris that I think overshadow why people don’t like visiting here.

Myth #1: Parisians are rude

The notion that all Parisians are rude is an unfair generalization.

The French culture is elegant, quiet, reserved, and sophisticated. They are loyal to those in their inner circle – right down to the boulangerie they buy their bread from. Once they find their favourite shop, they don’t consider going anywhere else.

They appreciate etiquette and privacy and are proud of their history and heritage, but are not boastful about it.

As a Canadian girl, I see a lot of similar cultural traits. Canadians are known to be polite, humble and reserved people as a nation. As a dual language country, most of us speak French un peu or at least understand it, heck it’s on every label of every product we ever buy.

So when travelling, we Canadians appreciate that we need to speak in French, and not just assume we can speak English.

This trying to speak French, goes a long way in Paris. Start with Bonjour! There is no expectation that you will be fluent, but speaking the basic pleasantries goes a long way.

Myth #2: Paris is so expensive

Yes, it’s true Paris can be pricey, but so can many other popular European capitals. Compared to cities like Rome, London, Madrid or Berlin the cost of dining, accommodation, and attractions in Paris is quite similar.

Like all cities in Europe, there are accommodations and dining for all budgets as well as activities allowing you to experience the city without breaking the bank.

I can spend a week in Paris and take away food and accommodations not spend a penny and enjoy the city. It costs nothing to stroll the Seine, visit a garden or park, browse the shops, get lost in the Parisian streets and explore the arrondissements. This is how I enjoy Paris.

However, where you are likely to notice a difference is when you travel outside of Paris, especially to places in France that are considered off the beaten path that’s where you’ll find more cost-effective accommodations and dining.

Myth #3: Paris is too touristy

Yes, it’s true, Paris, like many European cities attracts a great number of visitors.

And, yes, popular attractions like the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower are crowded. But, with careful planning, you can explore many lesser-known places in Paris like small museums and hidden gardens that offer a more authentic Parisian experience. This is the Paris that I know and love. To experience Paris like a local.

There’s a reason why travellers go to these monumental places – they are worth seeing. But I encourage you to divide your time seeing those iconic things to do in Paris with some places the locals like to go.

23 Reasons to Visit Paris France

1. the history.

Why you should go to Paris? Let’s start with the history.

Originally a muddy settlement called Lutetia, it’s evolved into the chic city we know today. Roman ruins hint at its past, while Notre Dame and the charming Île de la Cité showcase its medieval heart. Most recently, Baron Haussmann’s wide boulevards and architectural style left their mark on the city.

2. The Architecture

Is going to Paris worth it? If you love architecture, then that’s a big yes!

Paris’ architecture blows me away! The Haussmann style and creamy limestone give the whole city a cohesive, elegant look. Unlike other cities with mismatched buildings, Paris feels like a unified work of art. I love strolling these limestone streets!

3. The Parks and Gardens

Why visit Paris? For me, it’s the beautiful parks and gardens.

In Paris, parks not only offer a beautiful backdrop to the city but for locals, these parks and gardens are an extension of their homes. Strolling, catching up with a friend, playing games, having a picnic, reading, sketching and on and on it goes.

The beautiful Luxembourg Gardens , with its pretty flowerbeds, statues and fountains, is one of my favourites.

4. The Landmarks

Why go to Paris? It’s getting the chance to see the Eiffel Tower and other iconic landmarks in person. Paris is synonymous with iconic landmarks that are recognized worldwide.

The Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Sacré-Cœur Basilica, Notre Dame – these landmarks, and many more, make Paris a living museum of amazing sights.

You can’t help but want to explore these iconic landmarks, especially for Paris first-timers. But, even as a repeat traveller to Paris, I still find myself drawn to seeing them each trip, as they are just that incredible.

5. The Museums

Is it worth going to Paris just for the museums? I think so!

Everyone knows that Paris is a city for art and culture enthusiasts thanks to its collection of world-class museums.

With over 140 museums in the city, there’s a wide range of art, history, science and cultural heritage, from the well-known Louvre Museum and Musée d’Orsay to the smaller ones like Musée Carnavalet.

6. The Streets

Why is Paris the best place to visit? The streets of Paris of course and my favourite reason to go to Paris.

Wandering Paris is like being in a movie! Grand boulevards or tiny cobbled streets, every corner holds a surprise – a hidden garden, a cozy bakery with fresh croissants. The streets here aren’t just passageways, they’re an invitation to slow down, explore, and be a Parisian flâneur, soaking up the beauty of everyday life.

7. The Seine River

The Seine is my Parisian happy place! Whether strolling along the Left Bank or crossing the Pont Neuf to the Right Bank, the river offers stunning views and a quintessential Parisian vibe. I love browsing the bouquinistes , little green bookstalls overflowing with books and artwork. And who can resist a picnic by the Seine, soaking up the sun alongside Parisians and fellow travellers?

A fun way to see the city is by taking a boat cruise along the Seine .

8. The Hidden Gardens

Is Paris beautiful you ask? Visit any park, garden or square and you’ll find your answer.

One such gem is the Square du Vert-Galant, located on the western tip of Île de la Cité. Talk about views! You are right at the riverbank and the view doesn’t get any better.

Not only are these charming places to see, but they are also serene places to rest your weary sightseeing feet.

9. The Covered Passages

Why you should visit Paris in two words – covered passages! The 19th-century Parisian arcades are a true gem! These elegant passages, with their glass ceilings and mosaic floors, offer a charming escape from the rain and a delightful way to discover unique boutiques.

Each one has its own personality, making it a treasure hunt to explore them all. It’s a shame there used to be hundreds, but at least 20 survive for us to wander through!

10. The Neighbourhoods

Why should you visit Paris? The neighbourhoods of course!

Paris has 20 administrative districts or arrondissements , each with its distinct character. Within those arrondissements, there are the neighbourhoods, with some popular ones like the Latin Quarter and Montmartre.

Add the historic Le Marais in the 3rd & 4th arr to your itinerary.

And, another one of my favourites is the elegant Île Saint Louis the smaller of two islands in the Seine River

11. The Food

Why people visit Paris? That’s easy an easy answer especially if you’re a foodie.

Every morning I always indulge in a freshly baked croissant or a flaky pain au chocolat from a local boulangerie. Leisurely lunches and dinners are not rushed. Parisian cafes and bistros invite you to enjoy your meal never rushed and always savoured.

Don’t forget to explore the vibrant food markets found on market streets like Rue Mouffetard or Rue Cler.

12. The Cafe Culture

Is it worth visiting Paris – it is for the cafe culture alone!

Parisian cafes are the best way to relax and enjoy that inviting atmosphere to soak up the city’s culture, from enjoying tea or coffee and pastries to people-watching and conversation. They’re a great way to feel the essence of Parisian life, even as a solo traveller.

13. The Boulangerie

Is Paris good to visit – it is if you love buttery, golden, flaky croissants and crusty baguettes!

One of the aspects I miss about Paris the most when I’m not there is the Parisian boulangerie. They are an essential part of Parisian daily life, filling the air with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries.

14. The Fashion

Paris is a fashion lover’s paradise. From iconic brands and trendy boutiques to stylish locals, the city oozes fashion inspiration. We, non-Parisians copy their effortlessly chic style. On one visit during Paris Fashion Week I saw even more high street style while strolling the streets.

Beyond the designer fashion houses, chic boutiques and vintage shops, you’ll also want to visit the iconic department stores like Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché, where you can shop for the latest trends or the classic Paris essentials.

15. Romantic Atmosphere

Why Paris is the best place to visit? Paris is magic. Everywhere you turn, there’s romance in the air. From the Eiffel Tower views to cozy cafes and sunset Seine cruises, the city feels like a living love song or romcom.

So much so, it’s my husband and I’s tradition to celebrate our anniversary every 5 years in Paris, but, it’s also my favourite city to travel to solo.

16. The Culture

Is Paris worth going to – it is for culture lovers like me!

From the arts to the cool jazz clubs, and those charming bookstores like Shakespeare and Company, Paris has been inspiring artists for centuries. A visit to the Opéra Garnier inspired the Phantom of the Opera is the showstopper venue to watch opera or ballet performances.

I recommend an evening classical music concert at the beautiful Saint Chapelle .

17. The Language

Ah, the music of French! Just hearing those rolling Rs and soft vowels makes me smile. Even with a few stumbles, trying to speak French in Paris will be appreciated by the locals, but also adds to your experience. It’s a language that whispers romance and oozes joie de vivre, and who knows, maybe I’ll even impress a local with my “bonjour”!

18. It’s Walkable

What is good about Paris? It’s got to be one of the most walkable cities in Europe.

Getting around the city of Paris is a true plaisir or pleasure. The city is smaller than it looks, but if you want to give your feet a break, or if pressed for time take advantage of the Paris metro (€1.90 one-way) where you can reach the opposite end of the city in minutes. Or, rent a bike using one of the Velib stations. Every year streets around Paris are adding dedicated bike lanes making it safer to visit.

19. The Seasons

Is Paris still worth visiting in….well, who’s kidding, Paris is worth going to any month of the year!

Having been in Paris in all four seasons, my favourites are spring, fall and Christmas time. The summer months of late June to early September are the busiest for tourists. In August most Parisians leave the city for the month for their holiday leaving only tourists roaming around in the city.

Visit during spring to see the blossoming cherry trees.

Visiting France in autumn is stunning with its golden hues.

I love visiting the Christmas markets in Paris and seeing the pretty light displays.

20. The Hotels

Paris has me spoiled for choice! The city offers a perfect place to stay for any style. I especially love boutique hotels. Tucked in historic buildings, they’re full of unique character and personalized service. Imagine – cozy lounges with antique furniture and beautifully designed rooms.

21. The Pied a Terre

It’s all part of the charm – Parisian pied-à-terres! These tiny, charming apartments tucked in historic buildings let me live like a local. They’re cleverly designed to maximize space and ooze Parisian character. It’s the perfect cozy retreat for my Parisian adventures.

22. The Day Trips

Paris is a great home base for exploring nearby gems! Just a short train ride away, I can be sipping champagne in Reims. Or, I can wander the stunning gardens of Versailles and for a dose of garden inspiration, Giverny awaits, with Monet’s home and gardens. So many great French day trips, all within reach!

23. A Gateway to the Rest of France

Why is Paris a good place to visit? Paris is my launchpad to all of France!

After spending days in Paris, I love to hop on the RailEurope train , and I can be in the lavender fields of Provence or sun-soaked Nice in just a couple of hours. Each region has its own charm – Provence’s quaint villages and delicious food, the French Riviera’s beaches and colourful towns.

Beyond that, Normandy’s D-Day beaches and historic Mont Saint-Michel beckon, or maybe I’m craving the vineyards of Bordeaux or Burgundy.

Five Reasons to Visit Paris, France

Paris is one of those cities on most people's "to visit" list and quite rightly so. It's not really a question of why visit Paris , rather why would you not.

The city of love has its own je ne sais quoi whether you've been there once, one hundred times or as yet have only seen it in the movies. Either way, Paris has something which other cities don't. And it's not just that Paris has something special, it has a lot of special somethings and the city knows it.

Its inhabitants are proud to be Parisian and whilst they may not say it out loud, they know that they live in one of the most magical cities in the world. So why visit Paris ? Here are five reasons to convince the skeptics.

You will eat like you have never eaten before

Does this reason even need explaining? For the French, food is not purely a necessity of life, it is a joy to be savored three times a day. Its cooking and its eating are integral to French everyday life. While internationally-famous chefs and their michelin-starred restaurants are a valued Parisian institution, you can still eat excellent cuisine, either classic or adventurous, without re mortgaging your house.

It really is possible to start the day with a warm, light, melt-in-the-mouth croissant accompanied by sweet, fruity jam and then washed down with real French coffee on the sun- kissed terrace of a cafe. From the lofty heights of haute cuisine in the Eiffel Tower to the humble croque monsieur in a traditional Parisian bistro to the cool international character of the 13th arrondissement, Paris is a city bursting with flavor.

This is a city where wine is not a luxury, its a necessity. Even if food were the only reason, you would still visit Paris .

You will fall in love with this real-world fantasy

French is called the language of love and Paris has long been hailed as the most romantic city on earth so even the most hardened hearts amongst us would struggle not to be charmed by this place. Adored by honeymooners and lovers (you only have to be up the Eiffel Tower at sunset to see it), Paris is built on romance.

And its not just romance of the physical kind, but of the architecture, the history, the boulevards and the parks. It's the romance of sitting in a cafe reading all afternoon, it's the romance of neighborhoods packed with impoverished writers or a shadowy jazz club open all night. Whether you visit Paris with a loved one or not, it is hard to ignore the romance of the city.

You will feel connected to people from 2,000 years ago

History - Paris is full of it. From the Romans and the Sun King to Napoleon and modern French presidents, each of France's rulers has left their imprint on Paris. You see it in the architecture of the city, in the museums and in the culture. You can start in Île de la Cité (the birthplace of Paris in 300 B.C) with the 12th century Notre Dame and then wander up Haussman's 19th century Champs-Elysees into the heart of modern, commercial Paris.

A day beginning in the medieval streets of the Latin Quarter can take in the 13th century Sorbonne and then progress into the bourgeoisie center of Paris, St-Germain-de-Prés , full of the ghosts of literary legends. The colorful history of Paris has made it the city it is today, full of beautiful architecture, breath-taking views and a diverse population.

You will see the finest art man can produce

There are many reasons to visit Paris but one of them has to be art. Thanks to its conscientious Kings and Presidents of old, Paris boasts a very impressive display of art, classical and modern. For some the Musée du Louvre warrants the title of greatest museum in the world - it doesn't get much more momentous than that.

When the enormous majesty of the Louvre is overwhelming, there is the Musée d'Orsay just across the river to offer an antidote with its wonderful collection of Impressionists.

The Centre Pompidou is a work of art, inside and out, and is only second in the world to New York's MoMA in the importance of its collection of modern art. Shocking and innovative in its conception, it is now a haven for art-lovers. If that isn't enough the Musée du Quai Branly (African and Asian art), Musée de l'Orangerie (lots of Monet) and the Musée Rodin (does what it says on the tin) should keep your arty side satisfied.

You will stop mistaking style for vanity

Another reason why many people visit Paris is that it's a city where style and beauty are worshipped like gods, shopping is nothing less than an art form. Almost everything in this city, from the world's most expensive dresses to kitchen appliances, is astoundingly stylish.

Parisians have a knack of looking elegant and chic in every occasion, whatever the weather , so it would be a crime when visiting Paris, this city of style, not to pick up a few hints and indulge slightly.

If it is high-end couture you seek Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré is your Mecca. Chloé and YSL rub shoulders with the likes of Versace, Lanvin and Gucci on this street of dreams. Boutiques and vintage stores selling one-of-a-kind creations can be found in the Marais to give that element of Parisian je ne sais quoi to your wardrobe.

The most famous sights such as impressionist mecca Mont Martre and Montparnasse as well as the equally enchanting but underground Les Marais and Invalides.

The weather in Paris can be unpredictable though. For a few reasons most people will say that the spring (April through June) or fall (September through November) are the best times to visit. In general the weather in paris isn’t too extreme in either direction (too cold or too hot), and prices on things like airfare and hotels aren’t at their peak.

Most international flights land and leave from Charles de Gaulle airport, which is situated 30km (19 miles) north-east of Paris. The two cheapest and fastest ways to get into the city from Paris CDG are by RER and by bus. The RER train from Roissy-CDG to Paris leaves from the train station in Terminal 2.

Traveling on Metro

The Paris metro is without a doubt the fastest and cheapest way of getting around the city, even if it might not be the cleanest.The Paris metro network connects at several points in Paris with the RER, the commuter trains that go from the city center to the suburbs.

As one of the world's dreamiest destinations, Paris never disappoints. Summer sees the Seine lined with people soaking up the city at its sunniest, while the cooler winter temperatures make it the perfect time to explore museums, galleries and cozy cafes. 

When planning a visit, it's also worth checking out Paris' extensive festival and events calendar. It's one of the world's best cultural cities, so you can design a trip that includes anything from special operas and hip-hop dance premiers to French Open tennis.

Paris' plentiful accommodation spans all budgets, but it is often fully booked well in advance, particularly during peak times (April to October, as well as public and school holidays). Reservations are essential at these times, but are also recommended year-round.

June to August is the best time for relaxing in parks and along the Seine

You'll find locals kicking back along the banks of the Seine year-round, but never more so than on warm summer evenings with a picnic and bottle of wine. While the weather will be great and there’s no better time to enjoy the city’s famed cafe culture, you will be sharing Paris with plenty of other tourists. During August many establishments close as locals flee the summer city heat.

December to January is the best time for budget travelers

Sights are quieter and prices lower during winter, making it a great time for budget travelers – but you won’t have to sacrifice everything that makes Paris wonderful. The weather is mostly rainy and chilly (snow is quite infrequent), but ice-skating rinks pop up across the city, including in some truly picturesque spots like  Galeries Lafayette 's panoramic rooftop. In December, the city will light up with Christmas trees and beautifully-decorated shop windows, making it a very magical month.

March to May and September to October are the best times for a bit of everything

Spring (especially April and May) and autumn (particularly September and October) are ideal for visiting Paris – crowds are thinner, but the weather is temperate and lovely. 

In the spring, blossoms give way to leaves greening the city's tree-lined boulevards and flowering window boxes splash color across Paris' Haussman-era facades. Local street markets are perfect for picking up picnic ingredients since temperatures are now warm enough to head to Paris' parks and gardens , including the city's most popular, the Jardin du Luxembourg , and along the UNESCO World Heritage-listed riverbanks, particularly the Parc Rives de Seine . 

Likewise, the weather is gorgeous and crowds are smaller in fall, making it a great time to go. Autumn colors begin to seep in and the city ups its already impressive cultural offerings.

January is for shopping and culture

The frosty first month of the year isn’t the most festive in Paris, but the winter soldes (sales) – brighten the mood. Also, the city’s vast offerings of theater and dance are in full swing.

February remains chilly, but warms your heart on Valentine’s Day

In February, couples descend on France's romantic capital for Valentine's Day, when virtually all restaurants offer special menus.

Embrace marvelous March as the city starts warming up

Blooms appear in Paris’ parks and gardens, leaves start greening the city’s avenues and festivals and events begin. The weather remains variable (pack rain gear), but trends to warmer.

April is "Springtime in Paris"

Sinatra sang about April in Paris, and the month sees the city’s "charm of spring" in full swing, with chestnut trees blossoming and cafe terraces coming into their own. It’s also often the month of Easter.

Magnificent May is tops for warmth without the international crowds

The temperate month of May has more public holidays than any other in France and is a peak time for domestic travel. Watch out for widespread closures, particularly on May Day (1 May). But the main tourism season is just beginning, so May offers a chance to sneak in before the biggest crowds.

June is for summer delight from music festivals to warm-evening strolls

Paris is positively jumping in June, thanks to warm temperatures, a host of outdoor events and long daylight hours, with twilight lingering until late.

Jump into July for peak Parisian summer fun

During the Parisian summer, "beaches" – complete with sun beds, umbrellas, atomizers, lounge chairs and palm trees – line the banks of the Seine and pools hum with swimmers, while shoppers hit the summer soldes (sales). Heat becomes more intense, as do crowds.

August empties of Parisians but fills with international visitors

Parisians desert the city in droves during the summer swelter when, despite an influx of tourists, many restaurants and shops shut. It can be hard to get a good bistro meal (with many closed) but it’s a prime time to cycle, with far less traffic on the roads.

The Best Times to Visit Paris for Great Weather, Events, and Fewer Crowds

Not that you can ever go wrong with a trip to the City of Light.

Let us be clear, for starters, that "a bad time to visit Paris" does not exist. But if you're one to avoid crowds, chase deals, or build your itinerary around perfect weather, there are better times than others to travel to this glittering, glamorous, iconically enchanting city.

For example, although January through March are the chilliest months, they're also the quietest and decidedly the best for wrapping up in a chic coat, walking across the Pont Neuf to the Latin Quarter, tucking into a glass of red wine at a cafe, and experiencing Paris like a local. In the spring, vibrant blooms in the famed jardins are a major draw, whereas exceptionally long summer days yield ideal conditions for sipping cocktails at an outdoor brasserie late into the evening.

September and October are arguably the best months to visit — brisk breeze seeps into the air, Paris Fashion Week is in full force, and turning leaves color the city's scenic gardens. Nevertheless, cases can be made for traveling to the City of Light any time of year. The breakdown of Paris' tourist seasons is as such:

• High season: June to August and late December
• Shoulder seasons: April to May and September to November
• Low season: Early December and January to April

Here's a quick guide to the best times to visit Paris depending on where your priorities lie.

Best Time to Visit Paris to Avoid Crowds

Paris receives some 35 million visitors a year. Most tourists come between May and September, and July is typically the busiest month (followed closely by June and August). There are major downsides to visiting Paris in its high season: Large crowds make exploring popular attractions like the Eiffel Tower and Louvre more time-consuming, plus you might need a reservation to dine at some of the trendy restaurants. Hotel prices, too, will inevitably climb in the summer months.

We recommend visiting between October and April — sidestepping the jam-packed holiday season in December — if your main objective is to avoid crowds. Go at the beginning or end of that window, October or April, for temperatures still comfortable enough to sit outside at one of the quintessentially Parisian cafe tables.

To see the city's top tourist attractions with fewer people around, aim to visit on weekday mornings. Avoid booking with major tour companies, buy tickets that allow you to skip the line, and walk instead of squeezing onto public transportation. Paris is best enjoyed on foot anyway.

Best Time to Visit Paris for Good Weather

Travelers are drawn to Paris in the summer because of the long days and sunny weather. It's a stunning time to see the sights, from Sacré Cœur to Versailles, and the laid-back atmosphere at cafes and along the Seine is a treat. It's worth noting that Paris is not known for its air conditioning. In fact, AC isn't as common in Europe as it is in the U.S., though most hotels have it, and Paris can see heat waves that bring temperatures in the 80s and 90s. That said, summer temperatures are generally comfortable, in the mid-70s range.

Just as there are heat waves, there are also cold spells that briefly turn Paris frigid. Avoid December through February if you're averse to temperatures in the 30s and 40s. In April and May, you'll inevitably encounter some rain, but you'll also have temperate, almost-summer weather without the summer crowds. From mid-September to November, after the Labor Day and Fashion Week rushes, Paris quiets down and the weather becomes crisp and autumnal.

Best Time to Visit Paris for Lower Prices

The cheapest time to visit Paris is during the off-season — in the winter, before and after the holiday rush, which means early December, January, and February. These months see average temperatures in the 30s and 40s, but if you're willing to brave the cold, you'll likely save on flights, public transportation, attractions, and accommodations. Plus, the Eiffel Tower during winter is a magical sight.

Does it snow in Paris? Not really. The city receives a dusting now and again, but winter visitors need not pack bulky gear for extreme weather. Visiting Paris in the low season is special — not least because the restaurants are less crowded and attractions quieter — as well as easy and affordable. Cons include fewer tour options and less frequent tours, including a reduced timetable for cruises on the Seine.

Best Times to Visit Paris for Holidays and Festivals

The city's calendar is packed with festivals, holidays, and traditions worth traveling for. Let's start with the biggest sporting events: the Paris Marathon is typically held in April, the French Open begins in May and ends in June, and the Tour de France takes place in Paris in July.

In May, museums across the city open their doors for free perusing after hours on La Nuit des Musées . In the summer, Paris' iconic Fête de la Musique brings live music to parks and other public spaces on June 21, and Bastille Day is marked by military parades and fireworks on July 14. The Paris Jazz Festival is an ongoing event from June to September. Both fall and spring attract a couture crowd to Paris for Fashion Week, held in September and February.

The holiday season, November through December, sees the Champs-Élysées light up with Christmas lights and holiday markets pop up around the city. Parisians wrap up the holidays with the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6, which is when you'll find king cake (or galette des rois ) on market tables and in bakery windows everywhere.

Worst Times to Visit Paris

Again, there is no "bad time" to visit Paris. The city is remarkable — from its vibrant culture to its world-famous food and prominent historical sites — any time of year, even when it's bitterly cold or sweltering and teeming with tourists. However, if you're easily annoyed by heat and crowds, many would advise against planning a trip in August. This is summertime in Paris, which means it's sometimes uncomfortably warm and, what's more, at the tail end of the busy tourist season. If you happen to go during a heat wave, you could be quite uncomfortable sharing cramped space in AC-less shops, attractions, and cafes. Also, prices might still be high following the July rush.

The holidays are another chaotic (albeit magical) time in Paris. Go in December if you want to shop for unique Parisian gifts and see Christmas lights galore, but avoid this time if you're hoping for a quiet trip.

The best time to visit Paris is from June to August and September to October. Both summer and fall have its ups and downs. From June to August the weather in Paris is just about  parfait (perfect). Average highs are in the high 70s and there are long days of sunshine. Unfortunately, summer is also the most crowded time – and the most expensive. For lower travel rates and significantly shorter lines at attractions , plan a visit in the fall. The seasonal foliage is known to stun, though the city's spring blooms are pretty famous too. If a travel deal is all that you're after, a visit during the winter will surely shave off travel expenses. Keep in mind though that Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world, seeing upward of 30 million travelers yearly. So no matter what time you visit, there will always be tourists and some crowds.

The 'original' High Line is in Paris — here's why you should walk it

Walk the original ‘High Line’ or seek out other abandoned spaces repurposed as parks, propelling plans to make Paris one of Europe’s greenest capitals.

Sunlight filters through swaying trees, starlings flit between neat hedges and a man trots after an errant golden retriever, which is making a beeline for the reflecting pool. It’s difficult to believe I’m standing on a railway viaduct in the 12th arrondissement of Paris.

Ten metres below, life continues as normal: cars take turns to pause one by one at a zebra crossing as shoppers mill between the high-end glassblowers’ galleries and ceramic workshops of the Viaduc des Arts, seemingly oblivious to the green ribbon of cherry trees, maples and bamboo running three storeys above their heads.

But this is, in reality, one of the city’s worst-kept   secrets. The inspiration for the New York High Line, the Coulée Verte René-Dumont, or Promenade Plantée as it’s become known, was the world’s first elevated urban park when it opened in the late 1980s — a joint effort from landscaper Jacques Vergely and architect Philippe Mathieux. Stretching for just over three miles between Opéra Bastille and Bois de Vincennes on the obsolete Vincennes train line, it now holds a special place in Parisian hearts.

“It’s so high up that you’d never know it was here, and at one time it was totally unique,” says Aloïs, a Tours by Locals guide and former resident of the 12th arrondissement. “When I used to live in this neighbourhood, I’d go jogging up here to get away from the traffic,” she says, tying her auburn hair into a ponytail with a pink ribbon as a warm late-summer’s breeze washes in over the railings.

Paris plans to become — quite literally — one of Europe’s greenest capitals, with current mayor Anne Hidalgo promising a “massive greening” when she was elected. This has already started, with the plan to plant 170,000 trees by 2026 underway, in an effort to create urban forests across the city. By 2030, city authorities want half of Paris covered in planted areas, whether they’re parkland or living rooftops.

Our plan today is to walk the Coulée Verte and then find its little sister La Petite Ceinture — another former train line that’s currently part community garden, part secret passage into the city’s underbelly. Translating as the ‘Little Belt’, this rewilded railroad circles Paris, but with only a few sections safe enough to open to the public — thanks in part to the active electrical lines that remain in places.

But first we set off to explore the city along the Coulée Verte, passing through several ivy-covered arches, level with the treetops, church spires and roofs of elegant Haussmann apartment blocks on either side. On the right, the 1991 Commissariat de Police building on Avenue Daumesnil comes into view, adorned with a troop of identical carved stone figures tugging exasperatedly at their tousled hair, each with one elbow raised to the sky — inspired by Michelangelo’s Dying Slave sculpture in the Louvre. Down on the street, I would have barely noticed them.  

Soon, the path descends to the Jardin de Reuilly, where we find the lawns dotted with picnickers, and we stumble across a local celebrity: La Pétillante, or ‘She Who Sparkles’. There are many ornate cast-iron water fountains across Paris, but this one is a little different. It dispenses fizzy water and was installed over a decade ago to cut down on single-use plastics. We watch as a man with a copy of Le Monde newspaper under one arm fills up his bottle. “ Voilà , you see the bubbles?” says Aloïs, gesturing enthusiastically.

From here, via the echoey stretches of dark railway tunnel signalling the end of the Coulée Verte, we head off in search of La Petite Ceinture in the 18th arrondissement. Circling the city in a rattling orbit from 1862, the Little Belt predates the Paris Metro by several decades and was eventually made obsolete by it, its trains whistling their final fond farewells shortly after the Metro’s 1900 launch. After La Petite Ceinture’s closure, in rushed the flora, fauna and street artists, the abandoned stations eventually becoming almost apocalyptic-looking, the tunnels and tracks accented with wildflowers and neon-bright graffiti tags. Parisians are divided on what to do with this ghost line. Some are calling to preserve its biodiversity and open up the entire stretch to pedestrians, while others are keen to usher in the housing developers. For now, while city authorities are still deciding what to do with it, it runs in a broken circle, punctuated by chain-link fences beyond which only urban explorers make illicit trips into the 18th-century catacombs.

Initially, La Petit Ceinture proves difficult for us to find. “How do we get down there?” Aloïs calls from an overpass as we peer down at the people walking on former train platforms. “By the Metro,” comes the response from below, so we set off towards La Recyclerie — a train station in its past life, which has been repurposed into an industrial cafe, urban farm and recycling workshop that attracts hip young Parisians from miles around. Today there’s a craft fair being held beside the rails, and it’s so popular that the queue to get in meanders onto the street. Inside the former station, Gallic chatter and the clattering of cutlery is punctuated by the whirring of a tattoo gun.

We step out of La Recyclerie’s back door and into a melee of vintage clothes rails and jewellery stalls, set up around bug hotels and compost heaps. “Many people want La Petite Ceinture to become like the Coulée Vert,” Aloïs says as we descend towards the tracks, passing clucking chickens fed on scraps from the kitchens. “Lots of us want it to open all the way around. I’d like it to be open; it could be a gigantic green space available to all of us Parisians.”

Xi Jinping arrives in France with Ukraine and EU trade row at top of agenda

On his first visit to Europe since 2019, Xi is set to meet with Emmanuel Macron before heading to Serbia and Hungary

Xi Jinping has lauded China’s ties with France as a model for the international community as he arrived in Paris amid threats of a trade war over Chinese electric cars and French cognac.

On his first visit to the EU in five years, China’s president will meet his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, and the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen , who will urge him to reduce trade imbalances and use his influence with Russia over the war in Ukraine.

Ahead of the visit, Macron told the French newspaper La Tribune that an update of relations was necessary “because China now has excess capacity in many areas and exports massively to Europe”.

In September 2023 the EU launched an investigation into whether to impose punitive tariffs to protect EU producers against cheaper Chinese electric vehicle (EV) imports that it says are benefiting from state subsidies.

On Sunday night, Von der Leyen signalled the EU’s continued discontent with China , which she said was “currently manufacturing with massive subsidies”. An oversupply of cars and steel due to weak demand at home was leading to unfair trade and unacceptable market distorting practices, said Von der Leyen, that “could lead to deindustrialiasion in Europe” and loss of jobs, particularly in the German car industry.

Macron will try to talk Xi out of retaliating over the EV investigation, potentially with import duties on French cognac and agricultural goods.

The EU is also expected to raise suspicions that sanctions on exports to Russia are being circumvented by Chinese companies trading with its neighbour. They believe multinationals based in Asia are selling legitimately into Hong Kong and mainland China but the destination of the goods is Russia.

Xi, who was welcomed in Paris by the French prime minister, Gabriel Attal, said in a statement released on his arrival that ties between China and France were “a model for the international community of peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between countries with different social systems”.

In a separate op-ed published in the French daily Le Figaro, the Chinese president said he was coming to France with three messages: that Beijing was committed to opening up “new vistas” in its relationship with France, opening up “ever wider” to the world, and to upholding world peace and stability.

“While opening up itself, China also encourages Chinese companies to go global,” Xi wrote. “France is advancing reindustrialisation based on green innovation, whereas China is accelerating the development of new quality productive forces.”

On the war in Ukraine , he wrote that China “understands the repercussions of the Ukraine crisis on the people of Europe”. He emphasised that Beijing was not “a party to or a participant in it”, adding that “China has been playing a constructive role in striving for peaceful settlement of the crisis”.

Xi’s six-day visit to Europe is the first since 2019 and will also see him visit Serbia and Hungary . The latter is hoping to become the European hub of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturing after BYD in 2023 sealed a deal for its first EV factory in Europe.

One of Macron’s key priorities will be to warn Xi of the danger of backing Russia in its invasion of Ukraine , with western officials concerned Moscow is already using Chinese machine tools in arms production.

The west wants China above all not to supply weapons to Russia and risk tipping the balance in the conflict.

“It is in our interest to get China to weigh in on the stability of the international order,” said Macron in an interview with the Economist published on Thursday.

“We must, therefore, work with China to build peace.”

China opened an anti-dumping investigation into brandy imported from the European Union in January, sparking fears cognac could suffer a similar blow to that taken by Australian wine when China introduced tariffs of more than 200%.

“We want to obtain reciprocity of exchanges and have the elements of our economic security taken into account,” Macron told La Tribune.

Von der Leyen said on Monday: “We have to act to make sure that competition is fair and not distorted. I have made clear that the current imbalances in market access are not sustainable and need to be addressed”.

The European Commission, the European Union’s authority on trade issues, has opened more than 20 competition probes targeting China in recent months including into the supply of cars, wind turbines and medical devices.

Beijing has reacted furiously to the most recent investigation, into suspected inequitable access to China’s medical devices market, calling it a sign of EU “protectionism”.

The EU’s 27 members – in particular France and Germany – are divided on their attitude towards China.

The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, will not join Macron and Xi in Paris due to prior commitments, according to sources.

“In Europe, we are not unanimous on the subject because certain players still see China as essentially a market of opportunities,” Macron said, without naming any countries.

France will also seek to make progress on opening the Chinese market to its agricultural exports and resolve issues around the French cosmetic industry’s concerns about intellectual property rights, officials have said.

China may announce an order for about 50 Airbus aircraft during Xi’s visit, but it remains uncertain whether it will be a new deal, people familiar with the negotiations have said.

On Tuesday, Macron will take Xi to the Pyrenees, a mountainous region dear to the French president as the birthplace of his maternal grandmother, before Xi heads to Serbia and Hungary .

On his first visit to Europe in five years, the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, appears intent on seizing opportunities to loosen the continent’s bonds with the United States and forge a world freed of American dominance.

The Chinese leader has chosen three countries to visit — France, Serbia and Hungary — that all, to a greater or lesser degree, look askance at America’s postwar ordering of the world, see China as a necessary counterweight and are eager to bolster economic ties.

At a time of tensions with much of Europe — over China’s “no limits” embrace of Russia despite the war in Ukraine, its surveillance state and its apparent espionage activities that led to the recent arrest in Germany of four people — Mr. Xi, who arrived in France on Sunday, wants to demonstrate China’s growing influence on the continent and pursue a pragmatic rapprochement.

For Europe, the visit will test its delicate balancing act between China and the United States and will no doubt be seen in Washington as a none-too-subtle effort by Mr. Xi to divide Western allies. Chinese-French relations “have established a model for the international community of peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between countries with different social systems,” Mr. Xi said in a statement issued soon after he arrived in Paris.

He has timed his arrival at his second stop, Serbia, to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the deadly NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade during the Kosovo war. That mistaken strike on May 7, 1999, for which the White House apologized, killed three Chinese journalists and ignited furious protests around the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.

“For Xi, being in Belgrade is a very economical way to ask if the United States is really serious about international law,” said Janka Oertel, the director of the Asia program at the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, “and to say, how about NATO overreach as a problem for other countries?”

The Chinese government has continued to commemorate the Belgrade bombing, using it as an occasion to denounce what it sees as Western hypocrisy and bullying.

“The United States always views itself as the leader — or hegemon — of the world, so China is a competitor or adversary that is challenging its hegemony,” said Tu Xinquan, the dean of a trade institute at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. “The European Union does not have a hegemonic mind-set.”

The official doctrine of the 27-member European Union defines China as “a partner for cooperation, an economic competitor and a systemic rival.” If that seems a mouthful, and a perhaps contradictory one, it is because the continent is torn between how to balance economic opportunity in China with national security risk, cybersecurity risk and economic risk to various industries.

In March, China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, told reporters that Europe’s formula was unworkable. “It’s like driving to a crossing and finding the red, yellow and green lights all on at the same time,” he said. “How can one drive on?”

Now, Mr. Xi would like to ease the lights toward green.

To that end, Mr. Xi’s first and most important stop will be in France, whose president, Emmanuel Macron, has often made the Gaullist point that Europe “must never be a vassal of the United States,” as he did last month at a speech at the Sorbonne . The French leader insists that the survival of the European Union depends on “strategic autonomy” and developing the military resilience to become a “Europe power.” He rejects the notion of “equidistance” between China and the United States — France is one of America’s oldest allies — but wants to keep his options open.

All of this is music to Mr. Xi’s ears.

“Macron is trying to bring a third way in the current global chaos,” said Philippe Le Corre, a prominent French expert on relations with China. “He is trying to walk a fine line between the two main superpowers.”

Just over a year ago, Mr. Macron was lavishly entertained during a visit to China that ended with a Sino-French declaration of a “global strategic partnership.” The French leader echoed the Chinese lexicon of a “multipolar” world, freed of “blocs” and the “Cold War mentality.”

Now, in anticipation of Mr. Xi’s visit, China has praised France as a great power and expressed hopes that their ties “will always be at the forefront of China’s relations with Western countries,” in the words of Lu Shaye , China’s ambassador to France, in People’s Daily.

Mr. Macron, who recently warned that “our Europe is mortal” and will be saved only if it can become “sovereign,” will host a state dinner for Mr. Xi on Monday in Paris before, in a personal touch, ushering him to a favorite childhood haunt in the Pyrenees.

The chemistry between the two men appears to lie essentially in a shared view that the postwar order is moribund and must be replaced by a new architecture that takes account of shifting power. That Mr. Xi is almost certainly the most repressive and authoritarian leader in recent Chinese history, and that China’s military threats to Taiwan have intensified, has not come between the two leaders.

In the past six months, Mr. Macron has visited both India and Brazil in a push to place France at a fulcrum between the BRICS group of developing countries, which includes China, and Western powers. At a time of growing tension between the “Global South” and Western powers, he sees France as a bridge.

From France, Mr. Xi will move on to the warm embrace of Serbia, where China is the second largest trading partner, and Hungary, where its prime minister, Viktor Orban, has backed enormous Chinese investment and used his country’s position as a European Union member to dilute criticism of China. Both countries bridle at American power.

Beyond these two friends of China, there are, however, serious European differences with Beijing, whose economy was roughly the same size, measured in dollars, as the European Union’s when Mr. Xi last visited in 2019. China’s economy is now some 15 percent bigger.

Last fall, the European Union opened an investigation into whether electric vehicles made in China benefited from unfair subsidies, with a decision expected by this summer. That has caused tensions with Beijing and with Germany, whose presence in the Chinese auto market dwarfs that of other European countries. China accounts for at least half of Volkswagen’s annual profits.

German manufacturers, with plants in China, fear that any imposition of European tariffs could affect its own exports from China, as well as cause tit-for-tat retaliation.

The European Union Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, will join the talks in Paris with Mr. Xi. Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, whose relations with Mr. Macron have been strained, dined with the French president in Paris this past week. All of this is clearly part of an attempt to forge a united European front.

That, however, is always elusive.

Anger toward Russia in Europe runs highest in frontline states with Russia, like Poland and the Baltic States. They are perhaps the most fiercely attached to the alliance with the United States that Mr. Macron wants to offset by building a sovereign Europe. They are also the most wary of China, which has never condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Mr. Macron, like Mr. Scholz during a visit to China last month, believes that Chinese leverage in bringing an end to the war in Ukraine is critical. Only Beijing, in the French analysis, can bring real pressure to bear on President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, who will be sworn in for a fifth term during Mr. Xi’s European visit.

The issue, as it was last year during Mr. Macron’s visit to Beijing, is that China has shown little or no inclination to do so. Indeed, Mr. Xi is scheduled to host Mr. Putin in China later this month.

“It’s hard to imagine another discussion on Ukraine,” François Godement, a special adviser and resident senior fellow at the Institut Montaigne in Paris, said of the talks between Mr. Macron and Mr. Xi. “Those dice have been rolled.”

Still, there is little doubt that Mr. Macron will try again to enlist Mr. Xi’s support ahead of a Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland in mid-June.

At a deeper level, Mr. Macron appears certain to try to use Mr. Xi’s visit to advance an agenda that guarantees Europe’s relevance in the coming decades. He is wary of a United States that may re-elect former President Donald J. Trump in November, with unpredictable consequences.

Mr. Wang, the Chinese foreign minister, has said , “As long as China and Europe join hands, bloc confrontation will not occur, the world will not fall apart, and a new Cold War will not take place.”

For all of the fundamental differences in governance between China’s one-party state and Western liberal democracy, the leaders of the three European countries Mr. Xi has chosen to visit appear to embrace that Chinese statement.
