THE EXPERIENCES YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT

Preview the most haunted locations in mobile, the malaga inn.

One of the most historic hotels in Mobile is also one of the most haunted in the nation. Beneath this stunning piece of architecture sits a set of tunnels once used to hide Confederate soldiers, and once was the site of several gruesome ends. Discover the spirits of the soldiers and the various other entities that cause fear in the hearts of guests at The Malaga Inn.

Cathedral Square

A seemingly peaceful spot, Cathedral Square was once the site of Mobile’s oldest graveyard. Though several of its earliest inhabitants have since been moved, some were sadly left behind. Combined with an Oak Tree that sprouted from the grave of a wrongly executed man, and you have a piece of Mobile infamously known for its unexplained activity.

The Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel

As the former site of a military base during the War of 1812, it should be no surprise that the fighting that once occurred here has continued even in the afterlife. However, the spirits of long-deceased soldiers aren’t alone. Learn about the original Mardi Gras King’s ties to the hotel and why he may never be able to leave.

Welcome to Port City Ghosts

Discover why this unsuspecting city doubles as an otherworldly portal, opened by disturbed burial grounds, angered spirits of stolen territory, soldiers lost to war, and victims of unhinged violence.

The Hallowed Grounds of Death

Once referred to as an Old Spanish Town, Mobile has seen its fair share of bloodshed as it served as a prize for the various armies that fought to claim it. Death and destruction forged the way for the birth of The Port City, and the remnants of these melees continue to reverberate throughout the city’s most scarred locations.

Underneath the very earth that holds the festivals Mobile has become known for lies the decrepit remains of the original settlers, their souls unable to rest from unceremoniously being unearthed. However, as it usually goes in these events, not all bodies were moved to their new resting place.

Port City Ghosts takes you to Cathedral Square, the site of the city’s first graveyard, where Yellow Fever helped fill the plots in a non-discriminatory fashion. Many children succumbed to this horrific plague, suffering terribly before their untimely deaths. Today, the creepy sounds of disembodied children’s laughter and invisible feet running along the grass can be heard by unsuspecting visitors.

Of course, they’re not alone. Hear the unsettling story of Charles Boyington, a man wrongly convicted of murder and unjustly hanged. His eerie final words rang true, and an Oak Tree sprouted from his grave without explanation. Boyington’s tortured whispers and screams can be heard from the tree, his spirit seemingly unable to move on from his earthly prison.

These horrors and more await on your walk through historic haunted Mobile. Prepare for a night of thrilling tales and spine-tingling scares from Port City Ghosts and the lost souls that lurk in the shadows of their former stomping grounds.

What Will I See?

Visit Mobile’s Most Haunted Locations Including:

  • The Richards DAR House – In an area that was a symbol of wealth and status sits a community of homes that helped save downtown Mobile from demolition. Did the spirits of the Richards DAR House have anything to do with it? Find out more about this infamous haunted house and the family that refuses to leave it.
  • The Malaga Inn –  Prepare to discover a hotel that is so haunted that it’s been compared to those of The Hollywood Roosevelt, The Stanley Hotel, and The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast. Hear about the evil that dwells in the tunnels located beneath the hotel and who (or what!) joins the spirits of soldiers in terrifying guests and staff alike.
  • Fort Conde Inn –  There are several buildings that remain from the city’s era of War, though not all are brimming with unexplained activity like that of Colonial Fort Conde. The terrifying sight of soldiers appearing in the manner in which they died is a common occurrence, and if you look closely, you might see one yourself.

Hotels of Horror

Haunted hotels and Inns can be found all over the nation, but very few deliver on their otherworldly claims. The Malaga Inn is amongst those that house the petrifying unexplained phenomena it proclaims and is touted as one of the most haunted hotels in America.

Though the wars may be over, the atrocities committed never really die. In Mobile, they emanate from above and below. Uncover the secret tunnels harboring heavy energy that festers below the floors of The Malaga Inn. Once used during the Civil War for hiding Confederate soldiers, they would become tunnels of death, with soldiers meeting gruesome ends in these dank and dark holes.

It’s said that hauntings that occur within the hotel’s walls rival those of Los Angeles’s Hollywood Roosevelt and The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast, as nearly every room in The Malaga Inn exudes its own unexplained activity. Room 007 is believed to be the most haunted, inhabited by the spirit of a woman dressed all in white who is known to pace back and forth across the room.

Reports include the woman crawling into bed with guests, while others have reported unexplained cold spots and the sound of disembodied footsteps outside their windows as well as taps on the doors. Experience a chill down your spine as we take you to the site of one of USA Today’s Top Ten Haunted Hotels and learn about the spirits that give it this prestigious, petrifying honor.

A Hotel Fit For a King… In The Afterlife

The anger and hatred that resound from the soul of war can often still be felt and heard centuries after the bleeding has stopped. You see, for the victims of these barbaric times, the violence and bloodshed never really cease, as is the case with the souls trapped in the Battle House Renaissance Hotel.

Prepare to unveil a string of misfortune that turned this historic hotel into a haven for the dead. Built in 1852, the hotel was ahead of its time, offering amenities such as proper electrical lighting that drew in the nation’s elite. Stephen A. Douglas stayed at the hotel the night before his historic loss to President Abraham Lincoln, while Jefferson Davis and famed playwright Oscar Wilde took residence in the hotel.

Prior to this display of opulence, however, the site was home to a military base during the War of 1812. Though the fighting continues from the other side, it’s the spirit of the former Mardi Gras King, Mr. Henry Butler, Jr., that offers the most scares nightly. Mr. Butler would be another victim of violence, being murdered by the husband of one of his mistresses.

His ghost mingles with that of a bride who killed herself in the ballroom. But it’s the mysterious gray figure that causes the hair on guests’ arms to rise. The figure has been known to violently shake the beds, and it’s believed the entity is also responsible for the disembodied voice terrifyingly demanding they “Get Out!” A true horror of horrors at this luxurious establishment.

Why is Mobile so Haunted?

The sights and sounds of carnage.

Various parts of Mobile were exposed to the darkness that is war, leaving very few places safe from the devastation. Early settlers of the town constructed first in an attempt to protect the area from incoming attacks. One of these forts was Colonial Forte Conde, and though it’s evolved over the last few centuries, the spirits have always remained.

Port City Ghosts takes you to Fort Conde Inn, a collection of cottages that offer a quaint stay and a night of bone-chilling haunts. The death that occurred here all those years ago echoes in this enclosed getaway. Witnesses claim to hear disembodied voices throughout the Inn, with full-bodied apparitions appearing in the Autunez Cottage.

The eerie sound of footsteps, when no one is around, has been heard, and several guests have reported seeing a soldier staring out of the window of the cursed cottage. Keep your eyes peeled, as it’s not uncommon for the soldiers who perished during this brutal time to make an impromptu appearance.

The Haunted House on The Block

Most places with such significant ties to the development of the nation are bound to have a historic district within them. Mobile is one of these places, home to the historic De Tonti Square Historic District of Mobile. It’s one of two that were created to preserve downtown Mobile and consists of 44 homes, one of those being the infamously haunted Richards DAR House.

Venture to a piece of history, where one can experience the timelessness of the building and the spine-chilling unexplained activity that attracts ghost hunters and photographers looking to capture it. Though it now operates as a museum, the original family believes it to still be theirs. The phenomena in the former office were so strong that the Alabama Chapter of the Delta Paranormal Project was brought in to investigate.

Catching activity straight from a horror movie, the team picked up marbles being rearranged, seemingly moved by invisible hands. One photographer captured a shadowy figure that is known today as “Uncle Willie.” He’s also been seen sitting on a couch dressed in 19th-century clothing while other staff members have heard the creepy sound of children’s laughter with no known origin. The museum is open to the public on various days and times, but the spirits cause a scary stir 24 hours a day.

What’s So Special About the Port City Ghosts Tour?

See a different, more salacious side of this historic city.

Filled with beauty and charm, it’s hard to imagine that Mobile had such tumultuous beginnings. Fights over the territory never ceased, and the stench of death never left the air. Memorials and dedications to the resilience of the town and its defenders who continue to roam the grounds in their otherworldly form. One such dedication you’ll visit with Port City Ghosts is The Admiral Hotel, originally named after a controversial military figure that sits just a short distance from the USS Alabama – one of the most haunted ships in the nation.

Several deaths were reported aboard the USS Alabama, including two workers and at least eight killed by friendly fire. The terrifying sounds of disembodied footsteps can be heard inside the ship. Heavy steel hatches have been known to eerily shut on their own, and many feel as though they’re being watched while visiting the ship. The USS Alabama is another reminder of the tragedy and horror that are a part of Mobile’s past and that continues to haunt its present.

Pga tour on meeting with liv golf's yasir al-rumayyan: 'we want to get this right', share this article.

al ghouth tours

After Rory McIlroy confirmed earlier this week that a number of PGA Tour representatives, including Commissioner Jay Monahan and Tiger Woods, would be meeting in person with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the Tour released a statement on Saturday morning that the meeting went off as planned.

Here’s what was released by the Tour:

As previously stated, our negotiations with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) have accelerated in recent months. Representatives from the PGA TOUR Enterprises Transaction Subcommittee and the PIF have been meeting multiple times weekly to work through potential deal terms and come to a shared vision on the future of professional golf. On Friday evening, an in-person session in New York City included the entire Transaction Subcommittee and PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and his team, where more progress was made. We remain committed to these negotiations, which require working through complex considerations to best position golf for global growth. We want to get this right, and we are approaching discussions with careful consideration for our players, our fans, our partners and the game’s future.

McIlroy said in pressers prior to this week’s Memorial that members of the Tour’s Transaction Subcommittee have talked three times a week with the Saudis. The New York meeting represented their first in-person gathering since March. The other members of the committee are Adam Scott, board liaison Joe Ogilvie, Enterprises chairman Joe Gorder and Fenway Sports Group principal John Henry.

The PGA Tour has entered into an agreement for Strategic Sports Group to invest at least $1.5 billion and as much as $3 billion into the Tour’s new for-profit entity. The Tour and PIF met in March in the Bahamas after the Players Championship for the first time. Jimmy Dunne, whose secret meeting with Al-Rumayyan in early 2023 led to the Framework Agreement, resigned from the Tour board in mid-May citing “no meaningful progress” toward a deal with PIF. Woods and Jordan Spieth, both fellow Tour player directors, disagreed with Dunne and called that a false narrative.

In an exclusive interview with Golfweek , Ogilvie characterized the first meeting between player-directors and Al-Rumayyan as “perfect.”

“It was a perfect first meeting. When we were going into the room, one of the big things was how do we address him? If we’re gonna address him as His Excellency, that’s just kind of weird,” Ogilvie said. “He comes in the room, shakes everyone’s hand, and looks you right in the eye and says, ‘My name is Yasir. Please call me Yasir.’ I had heard that he’s a nice man and that he loves the game of golf, and nothing told me otherwise after meeting him. It would be naive to think that we’re going to come out of that meeting with a handshake deal and say, ‘We’re done here.’

“It was a very good meeting and you could see that there was a mutual respect between he and Jay, which is also good.”

See more from that extensive Q&A with Ogilvie here.

Your guide to Gulf Shores

If you're staying near the beach, you can most likely access everything you need to by foot. However, renting a car is a good way to explore the surrounding area as well. As far as public transportation choices go, there aren't many options except coach buses for hire.

For most beach destinations, shoulder season (spring and fall) is the best time to visit. Why, you ask? Well, lots of reasons, but in most cases it comes down to three things: less sweltering weather, less expensive rooms, and less crowded sands. Gulf Shores is no different. Visit in early fall or late spring, outside of the school vacations, and you'll feel very smug about your choices indeed.

When you go to the Gulf Shores, there are some essentials you're going to want to take. Without these items in your suitcase, there's a chance you won't want to leave your hotel room:

  • A frisbee or a volleyball - or both: The beach here is not just a place to lie around, but a place to have fun. Come fully equipped.
  • Several swimsuits: Obviously. To be honest, you're likely to get far more use out of these than you do out of any other garments you pack.
  • High-factor sunscreen: The sun gets pretty intense here, so make sure you stay as safe as you can while you're reveling in its golden glory.

10 key developments in the PGA Tour-LIV Golf saga, 1 year since the framework agreement

O ne year ago today, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and chairman of LIV Golf League’s backer, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Yasir Al-Rumayyan, sent unforeseen ripples through the worlds of golf, business, and geopolitics with their announcement of a “framework agreement” to unify the splintered sport. The tours would “merge”, a chyron read.

“I think today is a historical day for the PGA Tour and the game of golf,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said on June 6 2023. “What we’re talking about today is coming together to unify the game of golf.”

What a year it’s been. If you’re fortunate enough to have not followed the tick-tock — or lack thereof — of the negotiations, here’s where we are one year later, in 10 steps. Happy anniversary!

PGA Tour – LIV Golf framework agreement, 1 year later

1. the announcement.

Monahan spent two years imploring PGA Tour members to forego the “blood money” offered by the sovereign wealth fund — labeled by many as the latest example of “sportswashing” by Saudi Arabia.

However, Al-Rumayyan reportedly swayed Monahan to open negotiations and fully trust him 10 minutes into a lunch in Venice. The power brokers, and then-PGA Tour policy board member Jimmy Dunne, proceeded to negotiate in the shadows.

On June 6, Monahan and Al-Rumayyan squawked to CNBC’s David Faber about their stunning partnership. The PGA Tour, LIV, and the DP World Tour would coexist, with PIF largely fronting the money and the PGA Tour retaining the majority of board seats on a new umbrella entity. Monahan would be CEO. .

The “definitive agreement” would be hashed out in “a matter of weeks,” claimed Al-Rumayyan, to Faber’s immediate bemusement.

Two weeks later, Monahan temporarily left his post for health issues that he later admitted was related to work-induced anxiety.

2. Player reaction

LIV defectors, like Phil Mickelson, were pumped . A potential merger might allow them to mosey back onto the world’s premiere golf tour devoid of fiscal consequence. By contrast, PGA Tour loyalists — many of whom learned of the agreement on social media — were decidedly not  cool with that, on top of their ire about commissioner’s hypocrisy.

McIlroy, the de factor anti-LIV spokesperson for the PGA Tour, said he felt like a “sacrificial lamb.”

3. “Deadline”

Eventually, the sides set a deadline for Dec. 31, 2023 to finalize an agreement.

In the meantime, the Congress began holding hearings to scrutinize — and inevitably delay — the arrangement. Monahan was reportedly asked to resign in December.

4. Rory McIlroy steps down

In November, McIlroy stepped down from the PGA Tour policy board, citing a preference to refocus on golf (see: his Full Swing episode ). Jordan Spieth assumed his spot.

After spending time with Al-Rumayyan (more than 10 minutes), McIlroy began to change his tune. Throughout this year, he’s repeatedly articulated a desire to reach a resolution, articulating a vision that unites golf under PGA Tour operations, accepts PIF financial security, and enables defectors to rejoin the tour without incurring penalties.

Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas disagreed with that last part .

5. Jon Rahm grabs the LIV bag

All had been quiet on the defection front. No major star had jumped from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf in months. Then, in December, Rahm, arguably the second-best player in the world and the defending Masters champion, accepted $350 million or so to join the Saudi circuit.

Rahm has essentially acknowledged that he caved because he thought a deal was impending. He thought he could stick it out with LIV for a short time in exchange for an unearthly amount of generational wealth, while the PR hit would be mitigated by the framework agreement. He’d be back at Riviera, and TPC Sawgrass in no time. Whoops.

Rahm has contended in a few LIV events. His two major appearances, though, have been defined by comments indicating regret for his move, compounded by sloppy golf and obvious frustration.

Rahm is the starkest victim of the fractured sport. He’s the best possible competitive foil to Scheffler who deeply appreciates the history and tradition of the PGA Tour. And yet, he’s utterly irrelevant, playing for Legion XIII.

6. PGA Tour raises money

In January, the PGA Tour retained leverage by soliciting an investment of upwards or $3 billion from a newly-created consortium of American sports owners — including Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank and Boston Red Sox owner John Henry — Strategic Sports Group (SSG).

The PGA Tour formulated a for-profit branch tasked with growing and marketing the sport, PGA Tour Enterprises. Tiger Woods was named vice president. LeBron James and Drake were among the celebrity investors .

“I was like, ‘Oh, you’re joining the good sport’, obviously joking,” Lakers guard and golf sicko Austin Reaves told me . “And he was like, ‘Yeah, we’re basically just trying to grow the game.’ He was like, ‘However I could be in assistance of helping the PGA Tour.’ I think what he said was the problem was not all the good players were playing in the big tournaments, and that was kind of the focal point of everything.”

7. Diluted products

Simultaneously, the PGA Tour may have  lost  some leverage with its weakened product.

The first two months of the season were notable for underwhelming star performance and unheralded winners . Ratings have continued to sag , even through the majors and exciting performances from stars like Scheffler, McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele.

“If you look at the TV ratings of the PGA Tour this year, they’re down 20 percent across the board. That’s a fifth. That’s big… 20 percent’s a pretty jarring number.” McIlroy said in early April.

It’s hard to gauge LIV’s popularity due to a lack of data and media rights deals, but its impossible to deem LIV’s third season a smashing success — especially in the United States. A couple international stops, where the team aspects engender a Ryder Cup-style vibe, have been the exception. (LIV even brought Anthony Kim out of anonymity in a move that reeked of desperation. Happy for AK, though!)

On the course, outside of crowd-pleasing showings from Bryson DeChambeau at Augusta and Valhalla, LIV players have struggled in both the majors and U.S. Open qualifying .

“I would say the numbers on LIV aren’t great either in terms of the people tuning in,” added McIlroy. “I just think with the fighting and everything that’s gone on over the past couple of years, people are just getting really fatigued from it. It’s turning people off men’s professional golf, and that’s not a good thing for anyone.”

9. Bahamas gathering

A couple weeks before the Masters, Yasir Al-Rumayyan and Tiger Woods finally got in the same room. They reportedly golfed in Albany, and engaged in a “ constructive ” meeting with Monahan, PGA Tour player directors, and SSG reps. The commissioner said talks with PIF were “accelerating” but a deal remained a “ways away.”

10. Policy board drama

At some point in recent months, Webb Simpson requested to step down from the policy board, with the caveat that McIlroy reclaim his spot. The thinking was: Rory’s relationships with Yasir, etc. would help steer along the next phase of negotiations.

Around the Wells Fargo Championship (which McIlroy won), Rory’s return was rebuffed before an official vote went down. Monahan and policy board member Adam Scott chalked it up to “process.” McIlroy indicated that certain folks on the board — namely Tiger, Spieth and Cantlay — have a different vision for the PGA Tour: one that thrives sans the Saudis.

One week later, Jimmy Dunne and Mike Flanaghan stepped down from the policy board, citing a lack of progress. McIlroy voiced pessimism about the state of talks.

“Honestly I think it’s a huge loss for the PGA Tour if they’re trying to get this deal done with the PIF and trying to unify the game,” McIlroy said in the wake of Dunne’s departure.

A Transaction Subcommittee was created , featuring McIlroy, Tiger, and Monahan, supposedly focused on PIF discussions.

Before last week’s RBC Canadian Open, Scott claimed negotiations are “moving along as quickly as they can” and would “heat up very soon.” He also said the “ice” had yet to be broken.

On Wednesday, at Muirfield Village, McIlroy suggested a resolution may come in … 2026.

Local fan caddies two holes for C.T. Pan at RBC Canadian Open

Change Text Size

ANCASTER, Ontario – Paul Emerson doesn’t fancy himself a good golfer, but he’s a scratch “golf nut.” He attended Sunday’s final round as the RBC Canadian Open as a spectator, with an unexpected inside-the-ropes experience early in the day – two holes as a caddie.

Emerson, who hails from nearby Aurora, Ontario, was traversing the par-4 third hole at Hamilton Golf & Country Club when he realized that C.T. Pan’s caddie, Mike “Fluff” Cowan, had been injured and was unable to continue caddying. Pan’s playing partner Shane Lowry was carrying his own bag, and Lowry’s caddie Darren Reynolds was carrying Pan’s bag.

As Pan was walking Cowan over to a medic on the side of the fairway, Emerson asked Pan if he could lend a hand.

Fan steps up to caddie for C.T. Pan after Fluff’s injury at RBC Canadian Open

“I helped Fluff get the bib off, threw it on and started walking up the hole,” Emerson said.

Pan was grateful for the support, and Emerson took the bag. He looped through the fifth fairway before a member of the caddie services team, Michael Campbell, stepped in. Campbell was replaced by Al Riddell, Paul Barjon’s caddie, on the 10th tee.

Cowan was treated for injuries suffered after tripping and falling on the third fairway.

Emerson had never previously caddied in a professional event; he once looped for a friend in a pro-am at the LPGA’s CPKC Women’s Open. This was a new type of experience though – he told Pan on the fourth hole that he was willing to chat as much or as little as he would like; Pan noted that he is not particularly chatty.

Pan began Sunday’s final round in a tie for 36th at 2-under; he turned in 1-under 34. As for the holes with Emerson on the bag? Birdie on No. 3, bogey on No. 4.

PGA Tour reports 'progress' with Saudi wealth fund leaders

The PGA Tour reported progress without details from a face-to-face meeting between its negotiating committee and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia as it tries to work toward a deal.

“We want to get this right, and we are approaching discussions with careful consideration for our players, our fans, our partners and the game's future,” the tour said in a statement released Saturday morning.

The meeting in New York on Friday evening involved the “transaction committee” of PGA Tour Enterprises and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund that pays for rival LIV Golf.

Rory McIlroy is on the committee and said he was encouraged by the progress. He referred to the three-hour meeting as “very productive, very constructive, very collaborative.”

“Definitely things are heading in the right direction,” McIlroy said after the third round of the Memorial. He participated on a video call. “A lot of progress was made. I can’t really say much more than that, but it was really positive.”

PGA Tour Enterprises is the commercial group that came out of the framework agreement announced a year ago among the PGA Tour, PIF and the European tour.

PGA Tour Enterprises brought on Strategic Sports Group, which invested an initial $1.5 billion earlier this year. Negotiations are ongoing to bring in PIF as a minority investor, and there has been more activity than previously believed.

McIlroy, who joined Tiger Woods and Adam Scott on the transaction committee, said it has been meeting with PIF representatives every Monday, Wednesday and Friday over the last couple of weeks. The tour referred to negotiations as “accelerated” in recent months.

Friday's meeting was the first in-person discussion since players and board members met with Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas the day after The Players Championship in March.

The tour said the committee and PIF have been meeting “multiple times weekly to work through potential deal terms and come to a shared vision on the future of professional golf.” It said only that “more progress was made” in New York.

“We remain committed to these negotiations, which require working through complex considerations to best position golf for global growth,” the tour said.

McIlroy said those multiple meetings are more about financials, such as the investment possibilities of PIF and SSG.

“But I think last night was more talking about the future of the game and the vision, and that was where I thought there was a lot of progress that was made,” he said.

Woods and Scott are on the full PGA Tour Enterprises board, along with player directors Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Patrick Cantlay and Peter Malnati.

McIlroy resigned from the PGA Tour board last November, and there was an unsuccessful attempt by Simpson to have McIlroy replace him. McIlroy, the strongest voice who has gone from heavy criticism of LIV to being more willing to compromise, is part of the transaction committee and ultimately does not have a vote.

But he has relationships with both sides of the table. McIlroy had said he would be more in listen mode when the business leaders — Al-Rumayyan and his team at PIF, a PGA Tour Enterprises committee that includes four SSG investors — sorted through details.

“We're there to maybe give a perspective from player’s point of view,” McIlroy had said Thursday. “But, I mean, this is a negotiation about an investment into PGA Tour Enterprises. This is ‘big boy’ stuff, and I'll certainly be doing more listening than I will be talking.”

He said Saturday he did weigh in on occasion.

“The mute button was turned off a couple of times to chime in,” he said.

Auburn freshman Jackson Koivun makes cut at the Memorial in PGA Tour debut

  • Published: Jun. 07, 2024, 5:16 p.m.

the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday - Round One

DUBLIN, OHIO - JUNE 06: Jackson Koivun of Auburn makes his PGA TOUR debut during the first round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday at Muirfield Village Golf Club on June 6, 2024 in Dublin, Ohio. (Photo by Tracy Wilcox/PGA TOUR via Getty Images) PGA TOUR

Albeit with no room to spare, Auburn freshman Jackson Koivun did just enough Friday to make the cut at the Memorial Tournament in his debut appearance on the PGA Tour.

He is the first amateur to make the cut at the Memorial since 2009. Koivun made the cut while former major champions including Jordan Spieth, Wyndham Clark, Lucas Glover and Justin Rose did not.

Koivun is playing as an amateur, meaning he cannot collect a check at the end of the weekend he is now set to play. He made the field by virtue of winning the Jack Nicklaus Award, another major award to add to his sweep of national honors highlighted by the Fred Haskins Award. Auburn assistant coach Chris Williams is serving as Koivun’s caddie.

Nicklaus, the famous 18-time major champion, hosts the event annually at his own designed Muirfield Village golf course in Dublin, Ohio.

“We were walking back after we had just won the national championship, on the 17th green, and we were walking back to the award ceremony and Coach pulled me aside and told me I’m playing this week and I need to start getting everything in order,” Koivun said during a Tuesday press conference at the event. “It was kind of just hit me like a train, because all these emotions from the national championship and then I’m playing this event, which is such a great event and trying to figure out traveling and all that stuff with U.S. Open sectionals, there was an array of emotions, but all good things.”

Koivun is quickly on track to earn a PGA Tour card early through the PGA Tour’s accelerated program , having accrued more than half the required points by the end of his freshman year. Vanderbilt golfer and Mountain Brook native Gordon Sargent is the only player to have earned a Tour card in the newly created accelerated program.

Koivun now has 15 of 20 needed points after making the cut this week. He’ll get an additional point later this summer as an already-announced member of the Palmer Cup team.

  • 3 = D-I Nicklaus Award (2024)
  • 2 = D-I Outstanding Freshman Award (2024)
  • 3 = Haskins Award (2024)
  • 3 = Hogan Award (2024)
  • 3 = Best WAGR rank: 3rd
  • 1 = Made cut at PGA Tour event (2024)

Koivun could earn another point this weekend if he were to climb up into and finish in the top 10. Other point offerings this summer will come at the U.S. Amateur, where he will be among the favorites. The winner gets three points. He’s also a highly likely candidate to make next year’s U.S. Walker Cup team, which would be another two points.

There is an opportunity for Koivun to earn his Tour card before the end of his sophomore year.

Koivun just missed out on a playoff at the Alpharetta, Georgia, U.S. Open final qualifier on Monday before traveling to Ohio for the Memorial. Auburn teammate Brendan Valdes did make the playoff at the same site, but did not land one of the coveted final spots in next week’s U.S. Open.

Koivun played the first two days of the Memorial paired with Brandt Snedeker. Koivun shot an even-par 72 in round one which got him in the top 30 before posting a +4 score on Friday. The eventual cut line was +4.

In his second round, Koivun was five-over-par after 10 holes before making birdies on the 14th and 15th to get him in position to make the cut. Koivun later bogeyed the 18th hole putting his status for the weekend on the fringe.

Making his first PGA Tour appearance is the cap of a breakout freshman season for a player already ranked as a top 10 amateur in the world and the top player in his high school class. Koivun made the top 10 in 12 of 13 events he played.

Koivun won the SEC individual championship and was the top individual at the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, NCAA regional. At the NCAA championships, Koivun got an unlucky break as he hit the flag stick with his approach shot and had his ball roll off the green on the 18th hole in the final round. Had the ball gone in the hole, Koivun would have taken the outright individual lead and had he made a birdie, he would have been tied at the top. Instead, he lost the championship by one shot.

Koivun then went on to help Auburn, the No. 1 ranked team in the country, go on to win the team NCAA title . Auburn completed a sweep of the SEC team title, regional team title and NCAA team title.
