We have everyone from plus handicaps to the 30+ handicapper who is just starting to play but enjoys competition. Join and become part of the best golf community on the planet!

We offer 5 divisions based on your skill level. Players will be initially placed in a division based on their current 12-month low of their USGA GHIN Index or other verifiable handicap. Once you join, your division placement will be determined based on your APT Tournament Index, which is calculated exclusively with your scores in APT events.

We are thinking about a Scenic trip called 'Icons of Western Canada and Alaska' for 22 days and we noticed a very similar trip with APT. Just wondering if anyone has information or opinions about which company is best.

' class=

Thank you for your reply.

Would you be able to suggest a more suitable forum for my question? At this stage, I am seeking opinions from people who have travelled with either or both companies.

Still not clear what your question is? Are you wondering about the service, quality of hotels? Or are you asking about value for $$?

It’s the standard tour bus route from Vancouver to the Rockies which follows the Bronze Medal ( third choice) way to travel to the Rockies , stops at Sun Peaks ( an out of the way ski resort at which you will have no time to do any activities) and has a one way drive along the Ice Field Parkway so if you have any bad weather too bad for your views.

At the cost of this tour you could do a luxury self drive holiday and an Alaska cruise and still have money in your pocket.

People who do tours seldom review them here as this is mostly a DIY forum and TA doesn’t make it easy to store tour reviews or trip reports.

Why would people do both tours of the same region? I request again, please post inks to the two tours you are considering.

apt tour ut22bwiv

What you mightget from people having been on a tour is likely complaints rather then what was good about the tour.

so asking - would you not want the best info from both camps if you want to find the best info and then be informed either way before you decide.?

Travelbug ~

The Scenic tour you mentioned is here:

https://www.scenic.com.au/tours/magnificent-canadian-rockies--alaskan-cruise/9007

The similar APT tour might be this one:

https://www.aptouring.com/trips/canadaalaska/ut23bwiv

Here is an older thread of 37 posts discussing both APT and Scenic. Although an older thread, the companies will very likely be operating with the same business model, IMO.

https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g659487-i11598-k4695841-Scenic_Tours_or_A_P_T_for_Canada_Alaska_Cruise_Rail_tours-Canadian_Rockies_Alberta.html

And a shorter thread from last year about APT:

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g154943-i81-k11583799-Do_APT_organise_a_good_tour_of_Vancouver_and_Rocky_Mnts-Vancouver_British_Columbia.html

I have taken coach tours and can share with you what I look for in one.

Cost: You get what you pay for. If the price is low, you can be sure that you will be responsible for more meals and more optional activities. There will be more free time ("at leisure" is the term, I believe) where doing anything would be on your own dime. Higher end tours will include payment for some optional activities. So look for that to see if you would be satisfied there.

Restaurants: How many meals are included? How many meals are included in the cost, but allow you to choose from several options? Does that matter to you? i.e. do you want to eat frequently with tour friends, or do you want to break away fairly often to eat independently.

Tour program/activities/inclusions: Is there a variety? Educational component? Excursions? Free time? Included admission to attractions?

Pacing: On a coach tour like the one you want to take, it is usually better to spend 2 nights in a location, to give you one full day there. Your tour accomplishes that for the BC/Rockies portion of the trip. In fact, APT allots 3 nights to Banff . Only Kamloops has 1 night and this is because 1) the train is a two day trip and 2) Kamloops is half way and is the city with the infrastructure to tend to the train stop and passenger overnight. Sun Peaks, again is another half way point for the coach trip. It's a resort with summer activities on the mountain:

https://www.sunpeaksresort.com/explore/sun-peaks-in-summer

Most posters here do not speak highly of Sun Peaks as a stop. I agree for a self drive trip because it is removed from the highway and a self contained mountain resort community. The Village is pedestrian only. Summer brings free concerts, festivals, a variety of hiking, mountain biking, alpine flowers (depending on what month you are travelling), scenic views.

You can check out their summer offerings here: https://www.sunpeaksresort.com/explore/sun-peaks-in-summer

HAL is a well known cruise company. The ships mentioned in the links above are Nieuw Amsterdam (APT) and either Koningsdam or Volendam (Scenic) which each have a capacity of 2100 pax + crew.

I'm afraid that deciding on "best" is going to be down to you, after assessing the content of the tours based on your personal preferences between the two. I think it is fair to say that either company would give you a good show.

Apt and Scenic both do basically the same tour. They are close competitors to each other and stay in similar properties. They both have sister companies that are similar tours at lower costs (Evergreen and Travelmarvel).

Sorry Mufti. I have to take you to task over this.

- Nieuw Amsterdam , mentioned as shown by APT, is not sailing any Alaska itineraries in 2020.

- Koningsdam carries 2650 passengers

- Volendam carries 1432 passengers.

@ david, thanks for dropping by. I was hoping you would see this thread.

Aaah, Frommy.

I see I linked this year's APT tour. The '19 and '20 tours seem to be on display in the same page. Thanks for catching that.

The 2020 APT tour (different tour name, identical itinerary) is here:
