The Evolution of Christian Concerts

Religious concerts have been a longstanding tradition, blending the beauty of music with the profound depths of faith. Among the myriad of spiritual musical offerings, Christian concerts stand out as some of the most attended and cherished events. They're not merely performances; they're communal experiences of worship and adoration.

Contemporary Resonance

Recent years have witnessed a surge in contemporary Christian artists on tour. The modern soundscapes they produce blend seamlessly with age-old religious themes, offering a fresh and innovative approach to spiritual music. These artists and bands have proven that religious music isn’t confined to choirs and hymns. Today's Christian music encompasses a broad range of styles, from the soft melodies of acoustic sets to the energetic beats of rock-infused worship.

Navigating the World of Religious Concerts

If you're someone who's drawn to the emotive cadences of religious music, there's good news for you. A plethora of Christian bands and solo artists are currently on tour, or have upcoming gigs planned. These tours often span multiple cities, ensuring that enthusiasts from various locales can partake in these spiritually enriching concerts.

Tips for Choosing the Right Concert:

Stay Updated : Keeping an eye on music platforms (like our website) and Christian music websites will help you stay informed about upcoming tours and concerts near you.

Diverse Offerings : Understand that Christian concerts are not monolithic. From contemporary worship concerts, which are reminiscent of a Sunday service filled with praise, to high-energy Christian rock events, there's something for everyone.

Engage with Communities : Joining online communities or forums dedicated to Christian music can be a great way to discover new artists or bands that align with your musical tastes.

Check Out Opening Acts : Often, touring Christian artists will have local bands or lesser-known artists opening for them. This can be an excellent opportunity to discover new music and support emerging talent.

Book in Advance : Like any popular concert, seats for top Christian artists on tour can fill up quickly. To ensure you get a good spot, especially if the concert is near you, book your tickets as soon as they're available.

The Spiritual Essence of Music

The essence of attending a Christian concert is not just about the music. It's about the collective experience of worship, shared with hundreds, if not thousands, of fellow believers. So whether you're an old hand at attending religious concerts or are considering going to one for the first time, remember that these events are a celebration of faith, community, and the timeless power of music.

Things To Do

Music and concerts | review: tim mcgraw at united center delivers a concert lesson for us all.

Tim McGraw is silhouetted on stage during his performance at the United Center Friday, May 31, 2024, in Chicago. (John J. Kim/Chicago Tribune)

Sticking to core basics and refined techniques, the country music veteran exhibited an appealing relatability in both his songs and personality. McGraw didn’t come across as superior to any of the fans who packed the venue to the rafters. Flashing a permanent smile, the singer-guitarist adhered to a modest approach devoid of preachiness and most of the trite trappings associated with modern country. Namely, pop, glitz and pretense, along with the polish that coats his own studio work and that of many of his Nashville-based peers.

The combination of McGraw’s even-keeled nature, work ethic and fit physique almost made everything look too easy. He wore the same simple outfit — boots, black cowboy hat, skin-tight T-shirt, form-fitting blue jeans secured at the waist with a gold belt buckle — for the duration, untucking his top only at the conclusion of the 100-minute set. He walked or glided, never jogged or ran, and sang with one hand nonchalantly placed on his hip. The Louisiana native took his time delivering lyrics and phrasing lines to match the arrangements. Despite mounting his first arena tour in seven years, he chose to bypass pyrotechnics and fancy staging.

Which put the focus on him. Early in the performance, McGraw told the crowd it could ignore him since his backing band would be the best it would ever hear. Not quite, but the eight-piece ensemble proved very capable. It instilled a majority of songs with sturdy rock overtones and welcome traits — layered textures, Southern-styled grit, bluesy pep, fuller volume — that they lack on record. Prone to spreading his arms and dipping to one side like a kid who imagines he’s flying, McGraw fed off that energy and the walls of sound that emerged when the group’s instrumental configuration shifted to a five- or six-guitar front.

Risking excessive sentimentality, the singer also drew inspiration from his equally famous wife, singer Faith Hill, whose face cropped up on the backdrop screens during two songs. For all the well-meaning intent of seeing vintage footage of the happy couple amid “One Bad Habit,” McGraw registered his most powerful statement about family when speaking — not singing — and praising his spouse for helping raise “three independent, strong-willed, smart young women who have agency over themselves and their bodies.”

Other than growing older, seemingly little has changed for McGraw since he started dominating the country charts in the mid-’90s, married Hill and graduated to superstar status. His commercial and critical accomplishments —  among them 47 No. 1 hits, three Grammy Awards and the honor of owning the most-played radio song (“Something Like That”) across all formats in the ‘00s — kept him in the mainstream conversation. Artists three decades removed from their initial breakthrough don’t usually manage that feat. While the 57-year-old now releases albums at a slightly slower clip, he continues to generate hits with reliable consistency.

Credit McGraw, too, for expanding his visibility by pursuing other entertainment ventures. In 2019, his name graced the covers of two best-selling books. His forays into acting run deeper. After a breakthrough role in “Friday Night Lights” (2004), McGraw appeared in numerous films and television shows, most notably as the character of James Dutton on “Yellowstone” and its “1883” spinoff. Earlier this month, Netflix announced that McGraw will star as a champion bull rider in an upcoming drama series.

On Friday, the singer mentioned his acting roles and showed a short highlight reel of “1883” as a precursor to “The Cowboy in Me.” The breadth of the tune, which McGraw revisited and stripped down for “Yellowstone,” conjured big-sky vistas and wide-open plains. He and his band transmitted similar rustic landscapes on the bluegrass-infused “Just to See You Smile,” which adopted a traditional train-song rhythm and transformed it into a dynamic that suited the relaxed pace of a top-down cruise down a two-lane desert road.

For McGraw and company, the quality of the ride, rather than the speed of the journey or how good you look going somewhere, assumed the greatest importance. Restrictive to an extent, his music would have benefitted from added variation and departures from its established comfort zone. Multiple songs drew from formulaic patterns. The dreamy “Watch the Wind Blow By” tread an adult-contemporary path that closely paralleled known ‘70s soul classics. “All I Want Is a Life” and “Shotgun Rider” sacrificed any potential spark to stock predictability.

Fortunately, in combination with his band’s steady support, McGraw’s pleasant, relatively smooth baritone and emotional sincerity largely compensated for compositional shortcomings. As did his indifference to perfection. Granted, McGraw reached highs in his faithful cover of “Tiny Dancer” that Elton John stopped attempting before he retired from the stage. Still, his voice tended to wavered or slip into overly nasal territory on occasion.

Those minor flaws actually served him well, particularly when narratives angled toward mature themes or contained specific details pertaining to decidedly human elements. Yes, McGraw understood rollicking fun. The rowdy “Truck Yeah” paired a thumping beat with an anthemic chorus. Sent up with vibrant fiddle-piano exchanges, “I Like It, I Love It” emitted roadhouse vibes. A bleacher-stomping and hand-clapping “Felt Good on My Lips” gushed with joyous release. Yet unlike the bro-country generation that succeeded him and commandeered the charts, McGraw realized lasting pleasure and purpose involve more than alcohol, parties and riding around with pretty girls in pickups.

Whether expressing concern over the distracted driving of a loved one (“Highway Don’t Care,” featuring piped-in backing vocals from Taylor Swift), reflecting on how to better himself (“Standing Room Only”) or embracing a carpe diem mentality in the face of approaching demise (“Live Like You Were Dying”), the singer zeroed in on fundamental principles that matter most: compassion, reason, respect, acceptance, forgiveness, responsibility. Or, in a word, decency.

As much as he yearned to pass himself off as a hellraiser, McGraw faced no choice other than to admit he was a “Real Good Man” — a conclusion further implied by the innocence of “Something Like That” and wisdom of “Red Ragtop.” Such goodness peaked on “Humble and Kind.” The minor-key power ballad found the singer dispensing the sort of golden-rule guidance children are taught early on as well as a few selfless tenets to practice as a grown-up.

In our current climate, we’d do well to heed the advice.

Cardenas Marketing Network Breaks Company Record at Midyear, Revenue Up 43% With Hit Tours

For the first time, the U.S.-based promoter broke the $200 million threshold in the midyear reporting period thanks to blockbuster runs from Luis Miguel and more.

  • By Eric Frankenberg

Eric Frankenberg

Luis Miguel

Since its founding in 2001, Cardenas Marketing Network (CMN) has grown into one of the most dominant concert promoters in the world, leading the charge as Latin music continues to assert itself on arena and stadium stages. Case in point: In the midyear Boxscore tracking period, the company is up in every conceivable metric, posting the biggest gross and attendance in its history.

According to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, CMN grossed $233.3 million and sold 1.9 million tickets from 148 shows between Oct. 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024. That attendance figure marks a 12% increase from the company’s 2023 midyear showing, which was already up by 71% from 2022 — a year that saw a 94% rise in attendance from pre-pandemic 2019.

U2 & Sphere Dominate Billboard Boxscore’s Midyear Recap as Top 10 Tours Gross a…

CMN’s $233 million gross marks the company’s first midyear tracking period that finished north of the $200 million threshold, rising 43% from last year’s $163 million. Its 2024 midyear earnings are notably almost 4.5x higher than its pre-pandemic business. That achievement comes from working both smarter and harder: in essence, by putting on more shows by more artists in bigger venues with maximized potential.

Luis Miguel leads the charge among CMN’s touring artists. The Mexican music icon finished at No. 1 on the midyear Top Latin Tours ranking, grossing $165.6 million and selling 1.2 million tickets during the tracking period — eclipsing the biggest Latin tour of 2023 ( Karol G ) on both metrics in just six months. That marks the biggest gross for a Latin artist in the history of Billboard Boxscore’s midyear charts.

But as proven by Karol G last year and CMN’s run with Bad Bunny in 2022, the promoter’s reach exceeds genre restrictions. At midyear, Miguel is No. 4 on the all-genre Top Tours chart, behind only U2 , P!nk and Madonna . He also ranks third in terms of tickets sold. Elsewhere, Marc Anthony is No. 48 on Top Tours with $23.4 million, while Don Omar and Christian Nodal also pulled in eight-figure earnings with $14.1 million and $11.8 million, respectively.

Notably, CMN is absent from the midyear Top Promoters chart. Having recently entered into a partnership with AEG Presents, the company’s totals were rolled into those of AEG — which ranked No. 2 with grosses of $976.6 million — for midyear chart purposes. AEG’s total is up nearly $300 million from last year thanks to the touring giant’s own promotions and the addition of CMN to its tally. Had CMN been listed individually on Top Promoters, it would have ranked in the top five.

While the midyear tracking period closed on March 31, CMN’s tours have continued rolling. Reported grosses from April and March amount to more than $100 million, outpacing the midyear period thanks to big assists from recently launched treks by Aventura and Victor Manuelle .

CMN’s would-be top five midyear placement tracks, as the company spent the last three years in the upper region of the year-end Top Promoters chart — the culmination of a steady climb since its 2001 inception. CMN volleyed on and off the chart throughout the 2000s before rising from No. 15 in 2018 to No. 10 in 2019 to No. 7 in 2020. It ranked at either No. 3 or No. 4 in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Moscow concert hall attack suspects appear in court as Russia defends security services

T he four men suspected of carrying out a brutal attack at a Moscow concert hall that killed at least 139 people have appeared in court on terror charges, as the Kremlin defended its security services criticized for failing to prevent the massacre.

Three of the suspects were bent double as they were marched into the Moscow courtroom late on Sunday night, while the fourth was in a wheelchair and appeared unresponsive.

The suspects, who are from the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan but worked in Russia on temporary or expired visas, were named by Moscow City Court as Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni and Mukhammadsobir Faizov. They face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

They are accused of storming Crocus City Hall in a Moscow suburb on Friday, shooting civilians at point blank before setting the building on fire, causing the roof to collapse while concert-goers were still inside.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the massacre and released graphic footage showing the incident – but Moscow has insinuated, without evidence, that the perpetrators planned to flee to Ukraine. Kyiv has vehemently denied involvement and called the Kremlin’s claims “absurd.”

At a meeting with other government officials on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin conceded the attack had been carried out by “radical Islamists,” but still tried to pin ultimate responsibility on Ukraine.

“We know that the crime was committed by radical Islamists, whose ideology the Islamic world itself has been fighting for centuries,” Putin said, but added that the attack “is a link in a series of attempts of those who have been fighting Russia since 2014 with the hands of the neo-Nazi Kyiv regime.”

The first suspect charged, Mirzoyev, had a black eye, bruises over his face and a plastic bag wrapped around his neck. Mirzoyev, 32, had a temporary resident permit for three months in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk, but it had expired, Russian state media RIA Novosti reported.

Rachabalizoda, born in 1994, told the court through an interpreter that he has Russian registration documents but could not remember where they are. He appeared in court with a swollen eye and a bandaged ear.

The third defendant, Fariduni, born in 1998, was employed at a factory in the industrial city of Podolsk and registered in Krasnogorsk, both near Moscow.

The three men pleaded guilty to the terrorism charges, Russian media reported. It was unclear what the fourth man, Faizov, born in 2004, pled. He was pictured lying limp in a wheelchair inside a glass cage.

The men looked beaten and injured as they were brought into the courtroom. Videos and still images that appeared to show some of them being violently interrogated, including one apparent use of electrocution, circulated widely on Russian social media.

One video appears to show Rachabalizoda being held on the ground while having part of his ear cut off and stuffed in his mouth by a camouflage-wearing interpreter.

Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of Russian state propaganda network RT, posted a video of Rachabalizoda appearing in court with a heavily bandaged ear, which she wrote made her “feel nothing but pleasure.”

CNN asked the Kremlin about the “visible signs of violence” committed against the suspects, but spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment.

The four have been remanded into pre-trial detention until May 2022, the court said.

Later Monday, Russia’s Investigative Committee asked the court to detain three other men – two brothers and their father – in connection with the attack, Russian state media TASS reported.

On Monday, three days after the attack, rescuers were still searching among the ruins of the collapsed concert hall and trying to clear rubble. Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said more than 300 “specialists” were working at the site.

The attack, the deadliest on Russian soil in almost two decades, was met with outrage and disbelief in Russia, prompting calls for the harshest of punishments to be meted out.

While the concert hall roof was still burning, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack and shared a video taken by the men as they stormed the building, where thousands of Russians had arrived to watch the rock group Picnic.

CNN has geolocated the 90-second video to the concert hall, where bodies and blood can be seen on the floor as fire rages above. The video also shows one of the attackers slitting the throat of a man lying on his back, and ends with the four attackers walking away inside the building with smoke rising in the distance.

Despite ISIS appearing to provide evidence that its fighters had carried out the attack, Putin and other senior officials have been keen to associate Ukraine with the terror attack.

In a national following the attack – more than 19 hours after it began – Putin on Saturday claimed that a “window” had been prepared for the attackers to escape to Ukraine. He did not provide evidence. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also said: “Now we know in which country these bloody bastards planned to hide from persecution – Ukraine.”

Ukraine has vehemently denied any involvement and called the allegations a “planned provocation by the Kremlin to further fuel anti-Ukrainian hysteria in Russia society” and further mobilize Russian citizens to participate in Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Despite relations between Washington and Moscow being at historic lows, the United States warned Russia that ISIS militants were planning to stage an attack in the country. The US embassy in Moscow said earlier this month it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow,” including concerts.

US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienna Watson said the US had shared this information with Russian authorities under the “duty to warn” policy. The US also warned American citizens to avoid places like theaters and concert halls.

But in a speech Tuesday – just days before the attack – Putin dismissed the American warnings as “provocative,” saying “these actions resemble outright blackmail and the intention to intimidate and destabilize our society.”

Answering questions from reporters on Monday, Peskov refused to comment on whether Moscow had received warnings from Washington, and defended the “tireless work” of Russia’s security services.

Mark Galeotti, an expert on Russian politics and security service the FSB, told CNN he thinks Putin “finds it hard to believe that the Americans, even with gritted teeth, would genuinely provide true intelligence about terrorist threats in the current environment.”

“Because he would have no qualms about issuing a fake intelligence warning in order to meddle with another country’s elections, I believe he may well have thought that in fact that’s what the Americans are doing,” Galeotti said.

A CNN team in Moscow spoke to mourners who had turned out to lay flowers for the victims of Friday’s attack.

Alexander Matveev, 37, told CNN that Russians feel insecure and worried that another attack could take place. He said he found Putin’s suggestion that Ukraine was involved to be plausible.

“He said they were trying to escape to Ukraine. This makes sense. They just found some halfwits who were eager for money,” Matveev said.

CNN’s Tim Lister, Darya Tarasova and Nathan Hodge contributed reporting.
