15 Must-Try Foods in Krakow, Poland

15 Must-Try Foods in Krakow, Poland

Our trip to Krakow, Poland was motivated by pierogies.

I want to say it was motivated by history, culture, or medieval architecture—all of the things we loved discovering when we did our walking tour of Krakow —but the truth is our inspirations were much more superficial than that. We wanted to eat delicious Polish food. We wanted kielbasa and vodka. And even though we were fresh off an incredible experience in Morocco , we were ready to diversify from tagine and couscous. On our first full day in Poland, we made eating our focus.

We booked a food tour with Delicious Poland, a small business owned by the charming Kamila and Göksel. Kamila is a Polish native who met her partner Göksel in Turkey, his homeland. Together they decided to go into business together, and Delicious Poland was born. We’ve written pretty extensively about our love of food tours as a way to explore a city, and while we felt confident that we would have a sixth sense for locating pierogies, we were happy to have a couple of Krakow locals who could immediately introduce us to some of the best!

Not surprisingly, Krakow’s food scene is so much more than the dumplings and sausages you may expect to find. As our introduction to Polish food unfolded, we found unexpected flavors presented to us through fifteen—yes, fifteen!—different samples. If you have ever wondered just what there is to eat in Poland, here are the foods we tried and loved that we know you’ll enjoy as well!

Pierogies from Pierogarnia Krakowiacy

I’m a bit of a pierogi aficionado (I went to college in Pittsburgh , where pierogies and Polish cuisine are a big part of the culinary scene), and I have a strong, nostalgic relationship with the delicious filled dumplings. We each sampled three varieties: potato and cheese, spinach, and sauerkraut and mushroom. All three are traditional fillings found on many menus throughout Poland. Adam liked the potato and cheese pierogi the most, but I thought sauerkraut was even better. Served piping hot, both of us savored each bite, thankful that the dumplings lived up to our expectations.

When everyone had finished their pierogies, Göksel delivered a surprise to us: cherry pierogies! I had never tried a dessert pierogi before, but I was hooked after the first bite. They were loaded with sour cherries and full of juicy, tart flavor. We both could have eaten a dozen of them. If Przystanek Pierogarnia hadn’t been our first stop of the night, we might have tried!

More Information: Przystanek-Pierogarnia.pl | Facebook.com/PierogarniaKrakowiacy

Polish vodka

We sampled four different vodkas in Krakow: caramel vanilla, elderberry, walnut, and rye. While we both liked the rye vodka (it was very strong but very smooth and easy to drink), the flavored vodkas were much better. I thought the elderflower version was the most dangerous of all of them, as it was sweet and floral. The caramel vanilla and walnut flavors could easily have been served as an after dinner drink; they both were sweet and more sugary than the elderflower vodka. Flavored vodka is popular in Krakow, and it’s common to find in bars, so even if vodka isn’t usually your liquor of choice you may find a flavored vodka will hit the spot.

Polish kielbasa

Our kielbasa was served with a piece of bread, grilled onions, and a pickle with a few dipping sauces on the side, but I left the sauces alone. The kielbasa was so juicy and flavorful that sauces would only detract from the experience. Each bite started with a crunchy snap of the kielbasa’s casing and was punctuated with a smoky taste imparted by the grill. I wasn’t surprised when I saw more than one person close their eyes and smile a bit as they savored their kielbasa—locals included!

Oscypek, a smoked sheep's milk cheese

The oscypek we tried was lightly fried and served with a side of jam, which created an experience similar to eating baked brie. I’m not usually much of a cheese eater, but I really liked the small sample served to me—and Adam was disappointed that I didn’t have a leftover bite or two to share with him!

Zapiekanka in Poland

Although zapiekanka makes for a filling snack—or even a meal—during the evening, it’s most popular with the locals when they leave nightclubs and bars on the weekends. After a night of drinking and dancing, a portable open-faced sandwich is the perfect snack for the walk home.

Bigos

Traditionally, travellers would make and take it with them on journeys, as the stew tastes great when it is first prepared but gets better as the days pass, which makes it a great meal to pack. Bigos is also a popular dish to serve for holidays in Poland including Christmas and Easter, as it can be prepared in advance but served to a large crowd after a simple reheating.

I devoured the sample I served myself and wasn’t shy about going back for a second helping. The cabbage is prepared as sauerkraut, and with the addition of sausage it was filling and delicious.

Zalewajka

The first soup we tried was so good I vowed to figure out how to make it on my own. Zalewajka is a traditional soup made from sourdough bread starter—you either purchase or make the yeast, water, flour, and sugar concoction that is used to make bread. Combined with vegetables, the soup is hearty and flavorful, certainly exhibiting some of the same flavor profiles you would recognize if you had sourdough bread.

Our second soup was barszcz , a warm beet soup that is not unlike borscht but differs from the Russian varieties I have had in that it is served warm and is broth-based. While I am much more used to enjoying thick, creamy, cold borscht, the Polish variety was very tasty, and I made a note that it, too, should become a future culinary experiment in my kitchen.

Beer at Ursa Maior

Ursa Maior prides itself on innovative brewing processes, which today includes using renewable energy. We both agreed that the beer provided a great alternative to vodka (we like vodka, but it’s not for everyone!), and we liked the experience of trying familiar beer styles from a great brewery.

Potato Pancakes

Placki Ziemniaczane

Potato pancakes have a pretty significant history in Krakow, which once boasted one of the largest Jewish populations in the world. Placki ziemniaczane were also a staple in previous centuries, particularly when people salvaged lesser quality potato crops by converting them into pancakes to keep them from expiring too quickly. I used to eat potato pancakes almost weekly as a child, and I was happy that the pancakes I tried in Krakow were very similar to the ones I all but inhaled many years ago.

Polish beet salad is exactly what it sounds like—it’s a side dish of cooked beets mixed with seasonings and balsamic vinegar and served warm. I really like beets—after all, the borscht we tried was one of my favorite meals in Poland—and this salad did not disappoint. Known as buraczki , it’s a popular dish and a simple one to make, and it’s worth trying alongside a main dish.

Cabbage Rolls

Golabki Polish Cabbage Rolls

I really loved a story I heard about golabki’s role during the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War. Legend had it that the army ate cabbage rolls before winning a critical battle—one we learned about during our Krakow city tour —which in a way brought Polish history to life for me as I chewed and thought about people eating a similar meal many, many centuries before me.

best krakow food tour

Kompot first grew in popularity during times when fruit was scarce and needed to be rationed. Today, rationing isn’t a necessity, but the drink is firmly rooted in Poland’s culture and remains on beverage menus around the country.

Paczki- Polish Donuts

When we visited Budapest a few years ago I discovered Hungarian goulash, so I wasn’t surprised that just a few country borders away a similar but equally delicious version is on many of Krakow’s menus.

Polish goulash, or gulasz, is seasoned, slow-cooked meat, and while it is often served alongside pasta we opted to try ours on its own. While it wasn’t spicy, there were definitely notes of paprika in the sauce in which the meat simmered, which made the dish both rich and filling.

Racuchy- apple pancakes

Racuchy is an apple pancake, and it’s one of the best desserts I have ever tried—even though many people eat it for a snack or dinner instead of dessert. It’s a pancake, stuffed with cooked apples, pan fried, and covered in powdered sugar. We also enjoyed some berry jam with a few bites, although the racuchy really didn’t need any help when it came to flavors. Sweet, warm, and gooey, if our hotel would have had a refrigerator and a microwave there would have been no stopping us from asking if doggy bags are an option in Polish restaurants!

Full Itinerary

Learn about Krakow through the best local restaurants and bars on this walking tour of traditional Polish food and historical monuments. After all, the best way to understand how to live like a local is to eat like a local!

Get your first taste of Polish cuisine and local beer over a discussion on Polish gastronomy in Small Market Square. From there we walk throught the vibrant historical heart of Krakow, to visit another fabulous hidden gem for a taste of soup so good they hold an annual festival for it.

Get your cameras out as we walk along Royal Way and catch the best panoramic view of the Royal Castle and Cathedral. Our Krakow food tour continues with an education in a national culinary treasure – pierogi!

With our belly full of Polish delicacies, we’ll walk through Kazimierz – formerly the Jewish quarter, a neighborhood that has blossomed into a buzzing Bohemian mecca of unique restaurants, bars, and shops. We revisit the district’s roots with a taste of the local Jewish cuisine, a shot of Bison vodka, and a listen to the live music that spills out of every restaurant on the main street.

At the end of our Krakow tour, you’ll probably be pretty tempted to stick around Kazimierz, but you’re also welcome to walk back to the city center with us. Regardless, be sure to ask your local guide for a rundown of the best-hidden haunts to spend the rest of a magical evening in Krakow.

Local Impact: How you will help the local community by joining this tour

  • We visit only locally-owned bars, restaurants, and food vendors that are off the main tourist trail, ensuring that they benefit from tourism in their cities.
  • Any leftover food not consumed on the tour is donated to the charity organization to be redistributed to the homeless.
  • We use only local transport (tram) or our feet so our carbon footprint is practically zero!

Marta was fabulous!! A super guide, an interesting and knowledgeable person, a good enthusiast! All was perfect!!!

Ms. Mavis H. from Canada

This was an overall wonderful experience. Monika was great – congenial, fun, and informative.. Loved all the places we explored and the foods and drinks we tried. I’d did feel like an authentic and local experience, as advertised. So happy I did this tour which had been recommended by my friend who had done the same tour before.

Mrs. Tereza M. from Czech Republic

Food was delicious and our guide Olga was amazing, passionate for local food and her city, fun to be around, warm, attentive…truly like your local friend and very knowledgable as well. Olga brought us to great places, we would not find ourselves. Loved it! And I was soo full by the end of the tour. Great value for the money!

Mr. John B. from the United Kingdom

Our guide Pavel was really knowledgable and enthusiastic. He took us to bars and bistros that we would never have found by ourselves for the best of Kraków’s food and beers. Even though there was only 4 of us the tour still went ahead.

Ms. Susan R. from Gibraltar

This was a wonderful tour hosted by Sabina. A fantastic host and we had the total pleasure of her company to ourselves. Apparently, two other people were supposed to be on our visit around Krakow, however they made a no show. Their loss totally. The tour is well structured to give you a local feel through various destinations and as such a homely experience. We started off with sampling some local Kraft beers, before moving on to experience local soups and then food, in the former Jewish Quarter Truly delightful, ending in some walnut cake and vodka shots! Hey, it works! It was a wonderful experience, only due to Sabina and her care and knowledge of history and expertise. She’s not only a wonderful ambassador for Urban Adventure, but also for her country. It was a total pleasure to spend the evening with her, share respective stories and experiences with her. Very recommended.

Mrs. Judith G. from the USA

Sabina was a great host for the tour. She was very friendly snd grnuine, knew about the food and drinks, and was good fun. It was winderful to tour with a local who loves her city.

Mr. Shawn S. from the USA

I’ve taken tours with Joanna, Olga, and Matthew and they have all been such knowledgeable and passionate about Kraków. I did a walking tour, beer tour, and food tour and they exceeded my expectations. I feel like I received great value and my guides were so personable and great storytellers.

Ms. Joy D. from Canada

It was great! It was just me and the guide, Tomas. It was a great way to explore the city, try food and drinks, and learn more about culture and history of the area. I would highly recommend 🙂

Mrs. Janet S. from the USA

Marta was personable, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and a real joy to be on a intimate tour with. This is our 2nd Urban Adventure tour and I just wish I had found you before now as we have traveled extensively in the last couple years. We look forward to our next tour with you in Paris.

Mrs. Louise D. from the United Kingdom

very friendly guide / liked all the places we visited /overall price is expensive though in comparison to the cost of the food items in Poland and could put off some people

Mr. Tomasz K. from Spain

We had a great time with our enthusiastic guide Mateusz who took us to several local places where we had a chance to taste some really tasty food. Whenever you visit a city for the first time you never want to end up in a place where tourists eat. We were lucky to have Mateusz who kept us far away from those places and it felt as we were visiting Krakow reserved only for locals. This is great value for the price. I reckon that noone can finish this tour being hungry. No doubts that when travelling in the future I will look for simillar tours of Urban Adventures! Thank you!

Ms. Elaine W. from the United Kingdom

Easily one of the best tours I have been on – so much good food and conversation.

Ms. Rebecca S. from the USA

One of the best tours I have ever taken. Simply amazing. Don’t think, just book. You won’t regret it!

Ms. Tracy M. from the USA

We had a great time. We had just arrived in Krakow from the USA earlier that afternoon and thought this would be a good introduction to the city… and it was! Pavel was our guide and he was personable and engaging. We enjoyed going to different restaurants and definitely saw a different side of Krakow than we would have if we were on our own. It was also fun getting to know the other 2 couples on our tour. In fact, we went out for drinks with one couple following the tour. I would definitely recommend this tour, and will look into your tour group as I travel in the future.

Mr. Andrew B. from Switzerland

Our guide was perfect and the food very good but my comment is that instead of tasting a big amount of 5 local dishes, the amounts (like for the soup, pierogi) could be smaller and one could maybe taste more of different foods? Maybe that is the case in one of your other tours, then it would be worth mentioning in the booking description of the tour…

Mr. Charles K. from the United Kingdom

Tomasz was very knowledgeable about we visited and the amount of interesting history was staggering. This enhanced the experience of visiting the places while eating. Would recommend going.

Mr. Mike K. from Australia

Our guide Tomasz was brilliant. He showed us numerous out-of-the-way places for both drinks and food. He was very knowledgeable, and made the whole experience memorable

Mr. John W. from the USA

An exceptional Tour, the guide was excellent and the selection foods well representative (and Very good). We appreciated her knowledge of the local, and culture which complemented the food. We love Urban Adventures tours and this was one of the best.

20 Best Krakow Restaurants (Updated 2024)

Krakow is one of my all-time favourite cities, and its foodie scene is one of the main reasons why. As one of the country’s cultural and culinary capitals, Krakow offers a vibrant tapestry of flavours, blending traditional Polish cuisine with international influences. From steaming portions of soup served in traditional bread bowls and slow-cooked meat with cabbage and horseradish, to vegan kebabs, hipster salad bars and more, there’s truly something for everyone in the Krakow restaurant scene. I’ve visited Krakow countless times, and over the last few years, I believe that I’ve found the best Krakow restaurants on the map. So, whether you’re a seasoned foodie or a curious traveller eager to explore new tastes, there will be something on this list for you. Here are my top 20 best Krakow restaurants.

Table of Contents

20 Best Krakow Restaurants

Miód malina.

Looking for upscale food in a kitsch folksy setting? Then Miód Malina is the place for you! Every detail of this place is intentional, from the white lace tablecloths and log fires to the hand-painted fruits on the walls and flowers on the tables. It’s cosy, it’s old-fashioned, and you immediately feel like you’ve escaped the city upon entering. The thing that really stands out about Miód Malina though, is the food, or to be more precise, the flavours. Working only with the finest regional products, and importing some of their ingredients from Italy, Miód Malina hold the belief that having fresh and quality ingredients is the most important thing about any meal, and they introduce new dishes almost every month to keep up with the ever-changing seasons, making it one of the best places to eat in Krakow.

Their menu ranges from all the best meats (confit goose leg, beef tenderloin, ribeye steak, and roasted ribs) to experimental pasta dishes such as green tagliatelle with shrimps, spinach, and garlic in cream , and tagliatelle with roasted pumpkin, zucchini, chilli, and chanterelles in wine sauce . For a real hearty Polish dinner, I recommend the roasted veal knuckle with rosemary, served with its natural juices on a bed of mashed potato and parmesan cheese (14 EUR). Note that while there are vegetarian options here, Miód Malina is not vegan-friendly.

Szalone Widelce

My mum and I came for lunch here, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it! Describing itself as a ‘ traditional Polish kitchen with elements of an Italian kitchen ,’ this light and airy restaurant is simply charming. From the chequered tablecloths and jars of homemade jam and pickled vegetables adorning the walls, ‘twee’ is the only word that can be used to describe the interior of this place. As for the food, everything at Szalone Widelce is prepared from scratch using organic and fresh ingredients, and the main focus here is huge portions of baked meats, crunchy potato pancakes smothered in goulash, and traditional Polish soups.

The ‘Italian elements’ are not actually so Italian – Italians would never put chicken in a pasta dish, or serve fish with cream – but they are very tasty nonetheless. I ordered the penne pasta with chicken and broccoli in a cheese sauce, and my mum went for tagliatelle with salmon, leek, and dried tomato in a cream sauce (both around 8 EUR) – they may not have been authentically Polish or Italian, but they were a nice break from the rich Polish fare we’d been consuming all week.

Moa Burger is the first burger joint of its kind in Poland. With a large menu of delicious burgers in a casual, fast-food setting, Moa Burger is a great go-to when you’re hungover, or just in need of some comfort food! Varieties include the bacon and avocado, the chorizo and jalapeno salsa burger, and the Surf & Turf beef patty topped with panko prawns and garlic mayo (my personal favourite). They also have a ‘burger of the week,’ which could be anything from a Korean kimchi burger to a burger topped with Camembert cheese and cranberry.

W Starej Kuchni Restaurant

For hearty Polish dishes , generous portions, and a rustic and cosy atmosphere, head to W Starej Kuchni . They have a large oven in the centre of the restaurant where you can watch bread being baked, or you can sit in the library/antique shop-themed room, and enjoy the dark academia vibes. The menu is huge and features everything you could possibly want from a traditional Polish restaurant.

If it’s a quick lunch you’re after, I particularly recommend the potato pancakes with mushroom sauce. However, if you’re visiting for dinner in the evening and you’re looking for something meaty, try the Krakow Feast to share. This mega plate includes roasted pork knuckle, roasted ribs, half a duck, pork chop, roasted sausage, krupniok (black pudding), dumplings, potato pancakes, grilled sheep cheese, roast potatoes, and salad. W Starej Kuchni is also the place to try traditional dishes served in a bread bowl, such as zurek soup, bigos, and Magyar goulash.

polish potato pancakes

Just outside of the Old Town is Veganic , a bright and spacious restaurant serving modern vegan and vegetarian cuisine, as well as an extensive wine and cocktail list. They pride themselves on creating flavourful and healthy dishes that look just as good as they taste, and they take inspiration from all over the world. Highlights include arancine with vegan mozzarella, olives, and capers (a typical Sicilian street food ), Thai stew with oyster mushrooms and seitan, and pappardelle with chanterelle mushrooms and smoked tempeh.

Prosecco Oyster Bar

Prosecco Oyster Bar in the Old Town of Krakow does exactly what it says on the tin – Prosecco and oysters! We enjoyed a carafe of fizz with some oysters on ice, including some fancy French oysters which the server insisted were rare and only there for a limited time! We felt like it was a great pre-dinner spot, but there’s also a really affordable range of fresh, grilled, and fried seafood that you can order tapas-style for a proper dinner. Oh, and did I mention there’s a gigantic pink bath tub full of oysters?!

prosecco oyster bar krakow

Chłopskie Jadło

Chłopskie Jadło (whose name translates to ‘Peasant Food’) isn’t the easiest restaurant to find – you have to walk through a hotel and courtyard to get to it – but if you do find it, you’ll be very happy. This is one the most popular chain restaurants in Krakow, but don’t let that put you off – the food here is high quality, authentically Polish, and the service is excellent as well. The décor is reminiscent of an old Polish country house, folk music plays on the speakers, and dishes include homemade dumplings, stuffed cabbage rolls, and all the roasted meats you can think of.

traditional polish restaurant krakow

Pod Wawelem Kompania Kuflowa

At the foot of Wawel Castle (well, technically across the street, but who’s checking?), is Pod Wawelem Kompania Kuflowa , who specialise in humongous portions of Galician cuisine (Galicia was an area of Eastern Poland and Western Ukraine, not to be confused with the Spanish Galicia!). They are famous for their pork knuckle, and the thing to do here is order a tonne of different meats (either choosing from the menu yourself or opting for one of their sharing platters), along with beets, horseradish, and sauerkraut. We went for the ‘Officer’s Platter,’ which was only 11 EUR and impossible to finish!

meat platter

Bar mleczny ‘Pod Temidą’

Pod Temidą is probably the best milk bar in Krakow, so if you’ve never had the milk bar experience before, this is the place to be. The original milk bars were Polish cafeterias that, under Communism, provided cheap and nourishing meals to the public thanks to the subsidies they received from the government. These days, although privately-owned, they are still partially funded by the government, allowing them to continue serving low cost meals in a no frills environment. With Polish babcias (grandmothers) cooking the food, hideously outdated décor, and stainless steel canteen-style counters that you queue at with wooden trays, visiting a milk bar is absolutely one of the best things to do in Krakow .

Metrum Restobistro

What if I told you that one of the best places to get lunch in Krakow is a hidden rooftop bistro overlooking St. Mary’s Basilica? On the 6th floor of the Krakow Music Academy is Metrum Restobistro, a café catering to the music students and members of the public who are in the know. This delightful little café boasts  two  rooftop patios that give incredible panoramic views over Krakow, and you can even enjoy the views from the indoor section thanks to the glass walls.

The menu changes daily, and for about 7 EUR, you can choose a soup, main course, and dessert. They also do great coffee and cakes if you’re just looking for a quick bite. The menu is written entirely in Polish and the staff don’t speak English, so if you don’t have Google Translate to hand then you may just have to point and hope for the best! With that being said, I’ve never had a bad meal at Metrum Restobistro, and the view truly is breathtaking. Bear in mind that as it is a university café, it is closed during the holidays, and isn’t open in the evening.

rooftop cafe krakow

Chimera Salad Bar is one of my favourite lunch spots in Krakow when I’m craving something healthy. Located in the heart of the Old Town, Chimera Salad Bar boasts a a 30-metre long bar with more than 30 different kinds of salad, as well as hot meat and vegetarian dishes, 50+ different homemade cakes and a large variety of juices. You may be thinking that salad is boring, but I can promise you that after eating here, you will change your mind.

Some of the things on offer at Chimera include spicy plum salad, pasta and salmon salad, Caribbean salad with grilled orange and pineapple, and rice with chicken and curry. All you have to do is point to what you want, creating your own custom plate, and when you get to the counter, the cashier calculates how much your plate costs based on how many things you chose. Not only is the food at Chimera delicious, but the seating area is absolutely delightful, with a canopied garden complete with a virgin creeper, boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables and lots of tiny candlelit wooden tables.

Beer House Pub

Part of the Greg and Tom hostel group is Beer House, which has a pub and restaurant downstairs and a backpacker hostel upstairs. Despite what you may initially think from a hostel restaurant, the food here is really good, and their menu not only features all the Polish classics, but also an extensive selection of gourmet burgers, stone-baked pizzas, and pub classics such as Cordon Bleu and chicken shish kebab.

Morskie Oko

Named after the largest lake in the Tatra Mountains, Morski Oko is an ode to Zakopane. The interior is decked out to look like a highlander’s inn, with log fires and chunky wooden benches, and they often have live performances of traditional highlander music. Their specialty is their dumplings, but you can also feast on veal, sirloin, mutton, pork knuckle, ribs, and just about any other meat you can think of. I recommend the highlander’s potato pancake with beef goulash and sheep cheese, and roast mutton in gravy with garlic and seasonings. Also be sure to try the sweet honey vodka – it’s delicious!

best krakow restaurants

Polish-Italian owned Vegab is the perfect place to go if you want to enjoy a dirty kebab that happens to be cruelty-free. Their ‘meat’ is made from bio-tofu, pods, and wheat proteain, and some of their best vegabs are the Beirut vegab with hummus, tahini, and pickled cucumber, the Vegab Cheezy with nachos and cheezy sauce, and the Aloha , with mango sauce and marinated pineapple.

Whichever vegab you go for, you can choose from mild sauce (vegan mayo), medium (mayo and chilli), or spicy (chilli), and they also come packed full of veggies. Unlike most other kebab shops, Vegab is not a takeaway (although of course, you can get your food to-go if you like). There are plenty of places to sit in the light and airy space, making it a fantastic lunch spot. Expect to pay 5 EUR for a regular vegab, and 6 EUR for the maxxi vegab.

Ariel   is a traditional Jewish restaurant in the heart of Kazimierz, with nightly performance of traditional klezmer music, and dishes that include  goose necks stuffed with chicken liver ,  Jewish-style carp fish , and  Kreplach  dumplings. Every room in this restaurant is totally different, but all are cosy and old-fashioned with their walls adorned with portraits of Jewish people, Judaic art, and original features such as wooden beams and fireplaces. If you want to feel as though you’ve truly stepped back in time, head to Ariel.

jewish restaurant krakow

Located in the heart of Kazimierz, Hamsa serves up modern Israeli cuisine and ‘positive vibes’ with slogans including  ‘make hummus not war’  and  ‘hummus and happiness.’ Priding themselves on using ecological sustainability, Hamsa promises to only use eco-friendly products and meat, and their menu includes a wide range of  mezze hummus platters ,  Israeli shish kebabs, tagine ,  falafel  and more. I love the ‘build your own’ sharing platters, where you can choose 3 mezzes, which come served with bread, olives, and vegetables. Mezzes include various types of hummus, Babaganoush, falafel, Labneh balls, and more.

hamsa krakow

Restauracja Polska

Quaint and cosy is the only way to describe Restauracja Polska, a great lunch or dinner option in Kazimierz. On the menu are all the usual suspects – dumplings, soup, potato pancakes etc. – but they also have a decent fish selection (salmon, cod, and trout), and a selection of pasta dishes. After you eat, they will offer you a shot of homemade cherry vodka, but be warned – it isn’t on the house!

placki

Minoas Greek Tavern

A Greek tavern, in Krakow? Yup, and a good one at that! Not only do they bring you complementary taramasalata with crostini to start, but the yoghurt and honey dessert is also free! For the main, I went for lamb ribs, that came with salad, chips, and tzatziki, and I was not disappointed. The portion was huge, and everything was seasoned incredibly. As far as Greek food goes, I’d say that the flavours here are super authentic. As far as overall vibe goes, the interior is the quintessential blue and white associated with the Greek islands, the staff are great, and the atmosphere is good as well.

greek restaurant in krakow

Another Kazimierz favourite, Szynk is a place where you can find not only the typical Polish dishes, also some that aren’t on every single Krakow restaurant menu. Top picks include beef cheeks, rabbit in sour cream served with Silesian dumplings and beetroot, beef roulades, and grilled zander fish. We began with beef tartare, followed by baked pork knuckle for the main, and both got a thumbs up. Is this the best restaurant in Krakow? It certainly could be!

beef tartare

Plac Nowy 1

If you’ve had your fill of Polish grub and want something with a bit more of an international flair, head to Plac Nowy 1 , a large and modern restaurant with a menu that intertwines culinary traditions from around the world. I recommend the spicy vegan curry and the Japanese consommé with ramen, duck gyoza, spinach, and edamame beans. When you’re finished, head to the on-site bowling alley for an after dinner game or two!

Krakow Food Tours

One of the best ways of discovering the best restaurants Krakow is by taking a Krakow food tour. My mum and I did just this on one of my recent visits to the city, and though I was already well-acquainted with the food and restaurants in Krakow, I still discovered some new places (a couple of which made this list!), and was well impressed with the food and vodka that we enjoyed on the tour. The tour that I recommend is one that I found on GetYourGuide . This 3-hour evening tour included a tonne of yummy Polish foods and regional specialities, as well as a bunch of Polish vodkas, all punctuated by our guide’s interesting stories about what we were eating and drinking. Not only was it great to gorge on hearty food and flavoured vodka, but we also met some great people who we enjoyed the Krakow nightlife scene with after the tour was over! If you’re interested, you can  book the tour I did here . Other highly-rated Krakow food tours can be found in the widget below!

Best Krakow Restaurants | Final Thoughts

As you can hopefully see by now, Krakow is a true haven for food lovers, whether you’re seeking bold, innovative creations, or you’re more of a traditionalist when it comes to food. All of the restaurants on this list are places that I’ve personally visited (often several times), and would absolutely recommend in terms of food quality, value, and service. So, during your time in Krakow, don’t forget to indulge in the rich tapestry of flavours that this city has to offer. That’s about it for today, but as always, if you have any questions about where to eat in Krakow, don’t hesitate to leave them in the comments section below and I will do my best to help! The Top 10 Foods to Try in Kraków

Amy Hornsby is a freelance writer from the U.K. who writes about travel, yoga, and more. Amy has contributed to Lonely Planet, the Calvert Journal, and other publications.

As the second largest city in Poland and its cultural capital to boot, you bet you can find good food in Kraków. Kraków has a deep and fascinating history, and its historic Old Town earned status as the UNESCO City of Literature in 2013. Millions of tourists flock to Kraków every year— a record 14 million in 2019 —and there’s more to sample than its history.

Polish food is popular across the globe, but it’s not all meat and potatoes as you might think. While winter may dish up hearty soups and heavy dishes, the city has plenty of sweet treats you can indulge in during those hot summer months.

No trip to Kraków is complete without sampling the delicious array of Polish foods on offer. For every palate and season, we’ve compiled the top 10 foods to try in Kraków, with meat-based, vegetarian, sweet, and savory options.

You can’t visit Poland without trying their arguably most famous dish. Pierogi, Polish dumplings, are a staple food for most Krakowians, and the go-to type is ruskie (Russian), which are stuffed with cheese and potato. Pierogi are usually boiled, savory, and served with sour cream, but you’ll also find fried and sweet varieties.

In the warmer months, head to any bar mleczny for pierogi with fillings like berries or sweet cheeses. These "milk bars" are simple cafeterias where locals go for a quick and cheap eat. Right around the corner from the main square, the popular Milkbar Tomasza offers deliciously oily pierogi and a generous helping of sour cream.

Kiełbasa, or Polish sausage, is a national food that features in thick, wintry soups. Its often consumed as a late night post-drinking snack with a large dose of mustard, and your choice between smoked, white, spiced, pork, beef, and blood. Any seasonal market in the square will most definitely serve them, albeit at a higher tourist price.

A local favorite is the famous blue van by Hala Targowa , a Communist-era version of a food truck that shows up around 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. If you’re feeling peckish after one too many vodka shots, look for the line of people on Grzegórzecka Street and enjoy a uniquely Krakowian experience. For daytime kiełbasa finds and a more traditional food truck experience, try Skwer Judah in Kazimierz.

One of the sweeter desserts in Poland, Miodownik is an understated but very tasty honey cake. Moist, crumbly, and crunchy in equal parts, it is layered with sponge, honey, cream, and sometimes a little plum jam, with nuts sprinkled on top. It’s not always so easy to find, but you can sample a good one at the quaint and crafty Indalo Cafe , just minutes from the main square and Wawel Castle.

Known as the Kraków bagel, the obwarzanek is a pretzel-esque, doughy ring sprinkled with seeds. While they can be found in other parts of Poland, they are the brainchild of Kraków and hold a special place in locals’ hearts. At 2 złoty, they make for a handy snack to grab before you hop on your tram or head out for the day.

The best place to find obwarzanki is from the little blue carts dotted around the city that have themselves become part of Kraków's cultural makeup (and a haven for the pigeons who receive the carts’ crumbs at the end of the day). There is even an Obwarzanek Museum where you can learn everything there is to know about them, and even make your own.

Summer Strawberries

If you’re traveling to Kraków in June or July, you’re bound to see the local markets filled with fresh summer fruits—particularly strawberries. June is the most prolific month for strawberries, so get your fill of them while you can at markets like Stary Kleparz . Enjoy them alone, with cream, or blended with kefir, a yogurt-like dairy product.

No night out is complete without snacking on these pizza-style baguettes at the end of it, although you’re likely to see them any time of day.

At the center of Plac Nowy in Kazimierz is the Okrąglak , a rotunda full of windows where you can order many versions of zapiekanki like Greek, Hawaiian, meat lovers, or the basic mushroom and cheese. Add your sauce of choice and enjoy.

Potato Pancakes

You’ll see plenty of milk bars, cafés, and restaurants offering up Placki Ziemniaczane, simple potato pancakes. They are topped with goulash, served in mushroom sauce, or paired with sour cream, and are the perfect way to warm up (and fill up) in winter. Try the potato pancakes with goulash (meat stew) at Smakołyki , where the sauce contains some sort of magical ingredient.

This cream cake is a particularly indulgent sweet treat that’s beloved by Krakowians, although it can be a little tricky to eat. It is made up of a thick layer of cream in between two layers of puff pastry, sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Kremówka is a firm favorite of Polish people (and famously Pope John Paul II), and you’ll find it in almost any Polish bakery—piekarnia or cukiernia. Try it at any branch of Lajkonik bakery or at Michałek on Krupnicza Street.

The name doubling for "pigeons" (which are well loved by many in Poland) gołąbki is a cabbage roll filled with meat and covered in mushroom or tomato sauce. It’s simple, delicious, and Polish through and through. There is a vegetarian version, although meat is more easily found, and the mushroom sauce is the better of the two sauce options. Check out Gospoda Koko , Marchewka z Groszkiem , or any milk bar to try it for yourself.

There’s nothing that will warm you through quite like this hearty soup. Żurek is made up of a sour rye broth with hardboiled egg and kielbasa, making for a meal in itself. It’s especially filling when served in a bread bowl, which you can get at U Babci Maliny on Sławkowska Street.

Plac Domi n ikański 2 // 48 12 422 56 87

If you’re looking for one of the best restaurants in Krakow Poland to chow down on grilled meat, Rzeznia should be your first choice. They’ve grown famous in Krakow for their rib platters, but they also serve some tasty chicken and even shrimp.

As you can see, the portions here are always plentiful, and the beers they served up alongside our food were excellent matches.

Rzeznia has several locations throughout town, including one that’s just a block from the New Square (Plac Nowy). While the decor and atmosphere aren’t the most unique on this list, the staff are helpful, and the food always hits the spot.

Miodowa 8 // +48 12 426 24 24

Edo Fusion is the oldest sushi bar in Krakow, and they pride themselves on serving some of the best Asian food around. While they started off with authentic and strictly traditional Japanese cuisine, they’ve since branched out a bit, and now mingle Japanese foods and delicious dishes with Thai, other Asian cuisines, and even some Mediterranean and Mexican flavors.

The Curry Laksa is quite tasty, as is the sushi the restaurant is best known for.

Edo is open daily from noon to 10 pm (or 11 pm on Saturdays) and has a pretty relaxing ambiance. It also has a great location—just a short walk from the New Square and Wawel Royal Castle. This makes it a great spot for a lighter late lunch.

Dolnych Młynów 10  // no phone number listed

As their name implies, Meat & Go specializes in some of the best meat offered at Krakow restaurants.

They serve up a delicious pork chop and more on delicious bread. I particularly enjoyed their Cuban, and one of my friends swore by their Reuben.

But, no matter what you order, all their sandwiches are served with the best quality ingredients, and their large portions mean you’ll never finish eating still hungry.

Located in a popular part of town within a converted historic cigarette factor, Meat & Go has also designed a welcoming seating area. They open daily for dinner at 4 pm.

Aleja Kasztanowa 1  // +48 502 439 997

This popular restaurant is a proud part of the slow food movement, which has flourished in Europe and around the world in recent decades.

Their menu offers a fresh take on traditional Polish food recipes, and their delicious food, dutifully prepared with fresh, local and seasonal ingredients. And it’s meant to be eaten, savored and enjoyed in the same deliberate way.

Though a bit out of the way, at about 15 minutes by taxi from the city center, 27Porcji is well worth the trip. It’s also near a forest and park that offers some great hiking opportunities.

Ulica Brzozowa 17 // +48 795 818 123

Karakter offers trendy and well-prepared eats in a stylish setting.

While their menu includes a few common dishes, they’ve grown popular among Krakow restaurants because of their bold menu, which includes things like ostrich gizzards, homemade donuts filled with shredded duck, bone marrow with capers, and orange peel and crispy roasted duck skin.

If these less common dishes have you a bit perplexed, never fear. The staff here are friendly and quick to give custom recommendations based on your preferences. They also offer some great wine pairings.

Reservations here aren’t required, but they’re highly recommended. You’ll have a very tough time getting a table if you decide to drop by on a whim. You should also know that this Karakter is a little pricier than many other places in Krakow. Still, the food here is delicious and definitely worth a visit.

Wąska 2 // +48 12 431 05 37

Qrudo is one of the best restaurants in Krakow for fine dining. Their menu creates beautifully plated and delicious traditional Polish dishes. I particularly enjoyed their steak tartare, though the duck fillet is also apparently quite good.

The excellent service went well with their carefully crafted atmosphere. It was quite friendly, much more so than many other fine dining establishments.

If you plan to make an evening out of your meal here or begin a night out on the town, I also recommend their vodka-tasting flights, which were very affordable and featured four quite tasty varieties.Qrudo is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11 am to 11 pm.

Augustiańska 5 // +48 517 656 246

If you’re looking for some great breakfast food near the city center, look no further than Ranny Ptaszek. Here, they serve up what locals consider some of the best breakfast in all of Krakow.

Their massive helpings of Hungarian sausage and shakshuka, a dish made with poached eggs, vegetables, and tomato sauce, make for a phenomenal start to any day.

If you’re not into sausage and eggs, vegan and vegetarian options are also available.

As a bonus, this Krakow breakfast spot is less than a block away from the stunning St. Katherine’s Church and several other attractions. That makes it a great place to stop for a bite before a day out exploring the town.

ul. Dolnych Młynów 10 // +48 668 468 469

Veganic has made a name for itself among Krakow restaurants for its 90 percent vegan menu.

But while it is no doubt one of the best vegan restaurants in Krakow, its careful plating, gorgeous patio seating, and tasty dishes have won acclaim from a wider clientele. I opted for this delicious and savory spicy chickpea stew.

If you’re not familiar with vegan dishes or traditional foods, don’t worry. The wait staff was quite patient and happy to walk us through the menu. And, while we ate out on the patio to enjoy the summer warmth, the ambiance and atmosphere inside the unique restaurant is also worth a visit.

Zazie Bis t ro

Józefa 34 // +48 500 410 829

Zazie is a quaint French bistro located in Krakow’s Jewish Quarter. This place has grown popular among Krakow restaurants for its classic French cuisine at a reasonable price.

Though the menu is a bit small, everything looked delicious. I loved the pork belly served with octopus, tossed in a lemon mustard sauce, served over a green pea puree and topped with an apple grapefruit salad.

They also have a great selection of local beers and a picturesque cellar wine bar. The ambiance was quite pleasing, and the wait staff were attentive.

Because Zazie is so well known, I strongly suggest you make reservations for dinner. If you’re going for lunch, you should also know that some of their most popular lunch options have been known to sell out. So, if you’d like to try something specific, opt to go earlier.

Sławkowska 3 // +48 690 900 555

If you’re looking for a great steak, you’ll find Ed Red serves the best in Krakow.

Here, they work with local beef producers and then dry-aged their meats over multiple days in specially designed meat lockers. This ripens and locks in the flavor. You’ll appreciate their effort with every bite.

And while Ed Red is known for its meats, they also pride themselves as members of the slow food movement and strive to incorporate traditional Polish food and flavors into their menu.

This place can fill up on the weekends and evenings, so be prepared to wait or make a reservation. They’re open for lunch at noon and dinner until 11 pm or midnight. Be prepared to enjoy delicious traditional Polish cuisine!

Grzegórzecka 4

While food trucks aren’t often featured on this blog, Kielbaski z Nyski has earned a spot here as one of the best restaurants in Krakow.

They’ve grown famous for serving traditional Polish sausages. Each night, they grill up the sausages in a communist-era van and serve them on paper plates to long lines of locals and travelers alike (so you know they must be as good as they look). Amazing street food!

They serve their fare at the same street curb every day but Sunday from 8 pm to 3 am (and they’re a great late-night option). It is a great way to end your night out in Krakow!

Świętego Wawrzyńca 16, 31-060 Kraków // +48503718102

With the Andrus Food Truck, you can try Maczanka, a traditional Krakow dish with centuries of tradition. This recipe is combined with a modern way of serving it.

They have created the first and only street food version of Krakow-style Maczanka. Their version involves marinating the pork for two days, after which it is roasted for a long time at a low temperature.

Served in a wood-fired oven, the meat is served in a bun made by hand and baked according to a traditional recipe. As much as I loved it, I’m sure you will too!

At festivals and street food events, their Maczanka can be found wherever something good is served.

Krakowska 27 // +48 12 346 24 49

If you’re in the mood for some authentic Italian food, there’s no place in Krakow that can beat Nolio. They serve up traditional (and literally certified) Napoli pizza that’s fired in an oven at 900 degrees fahrenheit.

If you’re not in the mood for pizza, their menu also features delicious-looking homemade pasta and other Italian menu specialties, all beside a good selection of beer and wine. While a little pricey for Krakow, the food is still a great value.

Nolio is open on weekends from 1 pm and on weekdays starting at 4 pm.

Józefa 20 // +48 661 116 351

Set in a historic bookbinding workshop, this restaurant serves both international and traditional Polish fare in a sleek yet welcoming ambiance. Their menu crafts whole food dishes from delicious local and seasonal ingredients. I particularly enjoyed their beef plates: both the beef cheeks or beef tenderloin were phenomenal.

Introligatornia Smaku has located in the Jewish quarter just a block from the New Square, making it a perfect place to end a day out exploring the city (or begin a night out on the town). They open Monday through Friday at 1 pm and on weekends at noon.

Bonerowska 14 //    +48 796 449 886

Since opening their doors in 2010, this restaurant has served the best pierogi Krakow has to offer. Stuffed with either sweet or savory fillings, the Polish dumplings here at Przystanek are served alongside either stewed onions or butter and sprinkled sugar.

Though its location is on the corner of a more residential street and a bit outside Krakow’s main square, the food is well worth the trip. When you visit, you’ll see why this colorful and quaint shop is well-loved by both diners and owners alike. Such a fun experience!

Warszauera 1 // +48 535 662 088

If you’re looking for the best burger in Krakow, Beef Burger Bar will not disappoint. Here, they serve up massive and flavorful burgers topped with generous portions of beef, bacon, cheese, Polish sausage, and even sauerkraut. Their fries are also tasty and plentiful.

I recommend you stop by for lunch. But, if you’re out late enjoying drinks with friends, Beef Burger Bar makes for a great (and greasy) end to the night—they’re open until 3 am Fridays and Saturdays.

Miodowa 19 // +48 602 691 996

Zenit is a casual dining restaurant that’s grown quite popular in Krakow for its brunch and lunch specials.

Their menu focuses on from-scratch recipes, and they pride themselves on preparing almost all their food products themselves (they even make their own pickles).

But all that effort doesn’t mean you’ll have to pay more. They offer a very affordable 19 zloty 2-course lunch special.

Zenit is also centrally located — just a block away from the New Square. This makes it a convenient stopping point for a midday meal or relaxing dinner. They open daily for breakfast at 9 am.

Sienna 9, 31-041 Kraków, Poland // +48790707713

Magnificent ambiance and atmosphere, super friendly and attentive staff, fast service and delicious food. The decor is very nice, the steaks are perfectly cooked, and the prices are not high compared to the food served.

We ordered a Moo Moo beef set with three different steaks (tenderloin, new york and entrecote) and grilled vegetables. The taste was unforgettable.

Moo Moo Steak & Wine: Tenderloin Steak

I also tasted the filet mignon wrapped in bacon with Belgian fries, creamed spinach, and béarnaise sauce. The meat was perfectly cooked, and the sides were absolutely stunning! It was medium rare and cooked to perfection, nice, tender and super juicy.

They have an exclusive wine list, so you can pair your meat with a glass of local Polish red wine.

For dessert, the chocolate souffle is a perfect ending!

Sławkowska 26, 31-014 Kraków, Poland // +48124117288

Authentic french upper-class cuisine for honestly a meager price, as a tourist. The place itself is beautiful, with a great atmosphere and beautiful french music. The service was superb, with the waiter giving us many wine tips.

The building is magnificent to behold; being set mostly underground, the narrow corridors, alcoves and arches lit by tabletop candles create a romantic and intimate feel.

For starters, you can enjoy a creamy Norway lobster and Guinea fowl soup and salad with goat cheese, beetroot and orange.

Cyrano de Bergerac: Salad With Goat Cheese

The Saffron Ravioli with Duck and Gingerbread are their best hot starter. The taste is just perfect!

I recommended getting their Tenderloin Beef Wellington; it is perfectly cooked (medium), and it stole the show because the veal tasted less tender than the beef.

Krowoderska 71, 31-158 Kraków, Poland // +48533174442

Modern extraordinary European cuisine, perfect for lunch or dinner. The restaurant itself is beautiful and very nicely decorated; you will love the jungle style and monkey’s overload.

They have a beautiful large garden where the guests can chill surrounded by the best tastes of their cuisine.

We got the octopus and seabass as entrees and the mussel soup and lobster ravioli as starters, and they were fantastic!

Garden Restaurant: Mussel Soup

The 14 courses meal paired with 12 different wines is the perfect gastronomical experience. You can taste different dishes in small portions and try a bit of everything. The wine pairing is unique and well-suited to the meal.

There was a lot of creativity and design put into every dish making this visit an unforgettable experience.

Świętej Gertrudy 21, 31-048 Kraków, Poland // +48124294022

A proper fancy restaurant, their specialty is traditional polish cuisine executed to the highest level possible. The personnel is friendly and knowledgeable. Portion sizes are healthy – if you are used to eating so you can not move, you will need to order starters, soups and a main dish with at least two extras to feel complete.

A massive plus for those who need to avoid gluten is there is excellent marking and selection of gluten-free dishes on the menu.

The Sour rye soup in Cracovian style is a refreshing, mouthwatering starting dish before your lunch, and the Sirloin steak with porcini in a cognac-pepper sauce is the perfect main dish.

Pod Baranem Restaurant: Sour Rye Soup

For dessert, there is a magnificent raspberry cake, not so sweet and refreshing.

All food is made fresh, so it can take half an hour or so, but I think it is worth it!

Pod Baranem Restaurant: Raspberry Cake

Kanonicza 15, 33-332 Kraków, Poland // +48537872193

Great location, interior, atmosphere and services. Harmonized taste, cozy plating and a romantic ambiance. Little bit pricey restaurant but worth visiting.

We ordered the seven-course menu (which was more like ten courses with lots of extras). The wine/spirit pairing was worth every penny too!

All the food was above and beyond expectations, each course was just incredible, and we left full and satisfied.

The pierogi starter is divine and has a good balance of flavors. The Beef tartare with truffle mayonnaise, shimeji mushrooms, pickles, potato brush, caper, lovage oil and mustard is fantastic too.

My personal favorite from the main courses is the Beef sirloin, served with sunflower risotto, green peas, demi-glace, chanterelles, shallots and carrots.

Art Restaurant: Beef Sirlion

You can enjoy the Apple puff butter ice cream with cinnamon, nut crumble and crème chantilly for dessert. All the food is decorated perfectly and will take your breath away!

Grodzka 51, 31-001 Kraków, Poland // +48731462424

As its name says, this is a restaurant that offers oysters with prosecco! Absolutely the best combination ever. I love both, so the concept is perfect for me.

The portions are a bit small for the price, so this is a place to enjoy light food.

The seafood is really unique and very well prepared. They have tasty frog legs and seafood platter with octopus and shrimp.

Salmon, fish burgers, fries, tempura, mussels, and a wide selection of beer and wine are available on their menu too.

Prosecco Oyster Bar: Oysters

Rynek Główny 6, 30-001 Kraków, Poland // +48124216522

A hidden gem in the center of the old town, a small sign at the entrance to a covered yard, is the only clue that it’s there, but once you find it, you will be amused.

The staff is excellent, the decor and atmosphere are lovely, with a really quirky and unusual vibe. “Budda” has the biggest and strongest drinks I have found in Krakow. The cocktail menu is unreal, with loads of different types of classic and signature cocktails.

The menu is very extensive, and you will need more than one visit to try out all. Besides cocktails, they serve different types of beer, wine, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks.

The raspberry grande mojito is definitely my favorite!

Travel writer and owner of the blog . My work has been featured on Fodors, Eater.com, International Living, and Great Escape Publishing, among many others. My story? Nearly six years ago, I left my job at an Oklahoma City law firm and embarked on a journey around the world. At the time, I thought I would only be gone for 6 months, but the more I traveled, the longer my bucket list became.  Flashpacker describes how I travel. Rather than traveling as the normal world wise backpacker and staying in hostel dorms, I prefer a more comfortable experience, and typically stay in private rooms, take Ubers instead of taxis, and now use a suitcase instead of a backpack. Foodie, on the other hand, describes one of the key reasons why I travel. I love to pick a central “base camp” and then explore the surrounding area, really immersing myself in the culture and interacting with the people, and enjoying and exploring the food of an area is an essential part of this experience.

If visiting countries you like to taste the local cuisine, then coming to Krakow this restaurant is your absolute must. The Black Duck serves Polish cuisine in its homey character. Very tasty and at affordable prices. The restaurant specializes in duck dishes. I recommend duck in cherry sauce and the best bigos /a dish of cabbage and meat / in Krakow. Super tasty.
