BMW International Open: Viktor Hovland three clear and on verge of European Tour history

Viktor Hovland is on the verge of becoming the first Norwegian to win a European Tour title after a third-round 64 swept him into a commanding three-shot lead at the BMW International Open in Munich

Viktor Hovland is within sight of creating European Tour history after cruising to a 64 which earned him the 54-hole lead at the BMW International Open in Munich.

Hovland took the attack to the Golfclub Munchen Eichenried course and carded eight birdies, including five over the last eight holes as he opened up a three-shot lead over Jorge Campillo at the end of the third round.

The 23-year-old is making only his second professional appearance on European soil, and his first since the 2019 BMW PGA Championship, and victory on Sunday would make him the first Norwegian to win on the European Tour.

Hovland's march to a commanding lead looked unlikely in the early stages of day three, particularly when he drove into water at the fourth, as 2014 Ryder Cup star Victor Dubuisson raced to the top of the leaderboard when he followed an eagle-two at the fourth with four birdies over his next seven holes.

But the flamboyant Frenchman littered his card with four bogeys on the back nine as Hovland, who scrambled a par at the fourth, began to get the birdie putts to drop, making fours at the first three par-fives before adding three birdies in four holes from the 13th.

Hovland took the scenic route up the final hole, but the end result was all that mattered as he holed from 20 feet for his eighth birdie of a bogey-free round, taking him to 17 under par for the tournament.

"It was great, always nice to get off to a good start, birdieing the first hole," said Hovland, who would all-but guarantee a Ryder Cup debut if he can hold onto his lead on Sunday. "I hit the drive in the water on four, but I made a really nice up and down there.

"After I birdied six and got myself settled a little bit I just trusted it and played some really good golf. The back nine I made a lot of putts. It's a great course, if you pull off the shots you can make some eagles and some really easy birdies, but there is water around and if you don't pull the shot off you can easily make a bogey.

"I've pulled off the shots more than I haven't, and even the few times I've hit it into the water I've managed to make some good pars and keep things going. I like to play aggressive and make as many birdies as I can."

But Hovland is also wary of the need for patience, adding: "I just try to stay within myself. Obviously I look at leaderboards to see where I'm at, but instead of trying to force things, I just tell myself at the start of the day just to take control of my own game.

"If I don't waste shots here and there, just play smart, trust that I'm doing the right things, I think I should have a really good shot tomorrow. We've had some runner-up finishes in the past, but yes it would be really cool for Norway to get our first European Tour win."

Hovland will be paired with Campillo in the final round after the Spaniard came home in 31 to return a 67 which earned him outright second on 14 under ahead of South African veteran Darren Fichardt, while overnight leader Niall Kearney laboured to a 72 to slip into a share of fourth with Bernd Wiesberger.

The Austrian had defied the pressure of playing with Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington over the first two days as he fired rounds of 67 and 68, but he lost some fluency on Saturday and was unable to birdie any of the par-fives, settling for a four-birdie 70.

Victor Dubuisson

Wiesberger will start the final round six shots behind the leader, while Andy Sullivan (69) is among five players at 10 under and just ahead of home favourite Martin Kaymer (70) and Dubuisson, whose disappointing back nine saw him card a 69.

And while Vincent Norrman is surely too far back to contend at seven under, the Swede was celebrating a rare feat on his professional debut after he made a spectacular albatross hole-in-one at the par-four 16th, his perfect three-wood finding the target from 270 yards.

GREEN 11, TEE 12.

Hole 11 is a spectacular par 5, where many professionals choose the risky 2nd shot over the water hazard. The best place to watch this is from directly behind the green.

Hole 12 is a short par 3 and you can see the entire hole from the tee. This is just a few steps away from the 11th green .

If you make a 180-degree turn, you can also see the 18th green . The hilly terrain means that this is still possible even if there are many spectators present.

GREEN 1, TEE 2.

Behind the green on hole 1 , you can avoid the usual crowds around the 1st tee and enjoy an outstanding view of the entire hole.

Tee 2 is just a few metres away. The elevated position allows you to view the whole of this par 3.

Hole 16 is a short par 4 that provides plenty of excitement. The green is protected by water hazards but bold players choose to attack it right from the tee. Other players select a short wedge to the green – either way, you are guaranteed to see plenty of birdies.

From the green, it is just a short walk to the 17th tee and the 18th fairway .

SMALL BEER GARDEN.

The compact and cosy beer garden provides the perfect opportunity for on-course refreshment and is also a central hotspot surrounded by a wide range of options.

Green 7 is surrounded by a number of smaller hills that provide an ideal view of this par 4.

The 8th tee is right next door and the slightly elevated position allows you to see what is happening on the green of this par 3.

Turning in an anticlockwise direction reveals the 9th tee and the 10th green.

The 11th tee is almost completely enclosed by the beer garden. This is also where you can find Eichenried’s largest hill. This provides you with a wonderful view of holes 11 and 13 .

Behind the green on the 3rd hole , you can now enjoy a great view of this par 4, which has recently been extended to a length of over 430 metres and features a very difficult green.

You can also look across to holes 4 and 8 from here.

HOLES 6 & 7.

A position alongside the bunker at the midway point of hole 6 provides a very good view of the drive and the stroke played onto the green.

Hole 7 is just a few steps away.

Hole 15 has an extended, narrow green with interesting pin positions. Smaller elevations provide an ideal view.

From there, it is just a few short steps to the 14th hole and the 13th green .

THE STAND AT THE 18TH GREEN.

The imposing stand around the 18th green is one of the best-known features of the tournament and represents one of the most important hubs on the course.

The professionals complete the first half of their round on the 9th green right alongside. A good tee shot opens up the opportunity to attack the green with the second stroke and can provide some spectacular situations.

The neighbouring tournament village is where you can find a range of exhibitors and catering tents whilst admiring the latest BMW cars. Another stage area hosts live music acts and a diverse programme of events.

You can observe the professionals as they warm up and go through their training routines in a relaxed atmosphere at the practice facilities around the clubhouse.

A high-class field, led by Major winners Martin Kaymer, Sergio García and Louis Oosthuizen, has been confirmed for the BMW International Open (22nd to 26th June 2022, Golfclub München Eichenried). This year’s prize purse for the most iconic professional golf event in Germany, which BMW is staging for the 33rd time, stands at two million euros overall, making the BMW International Open the most lucrative German golf tournament.

Fully-electric luxury saloon at hole 17

As well as Kaymer, García and Oosthuizen, fans can also look forward to seeing Ryder Cup players Bernd Wiesberger (AUT) and Rafa Cabrera Bello (ESP), reigning “DP World Tour Rookie of the Year” Matti Schmid (GER), and two more top German players, in Max Kieffer and Marcel Siem.

In 2022, the pros will have the opportunity to win an extraordinary Hole-in-One Car with an ace on the 17th hole (par 3). Even before it makes its world premiere in a few weeks’ time, the new BMW i7 has been confirmed as the prize. The world’s first fully-electric luxury saloon, and with a range of over 600 kilometres, the BMW i7 is bringing innovative driving pleasure to the streets.

Visitors can expect a first class event at the BMW International Open

“Everyone at BMW is excited that it looks likely that we will be able to welcome visitors and golf fans without any restrictions, as well as a fantastic field of players,” says Zana Koval, Head of Brand Experience BMW Deutschland. “As the organiser, BMW will raise the premium visitor experience to a new level. This is reflected in such a high-class and innovative Hole-in-One Car as the BMW i7.”

The great importance of sustainability is also shown by the shuttle fleet for the 2022 BMW International Open, which this year consists entirely of electrified vehicles – charged using green electricity, of course.

Day tickets, season tickets and VIP tickets for the Fairway Club are available from the online ticket shop (www.bmw-golfsport.com/tickets). Admission to the Pro-Am, on Wednesday 22nd June, is free of charge. However, visitors must order a free and personalised admission ticket in the ticket shop. Those interested can also find information on discounts in the ticket shop. Tickets can be returned up to three days prior to the event – 14 days in the case of Fairway Club tickets – and the ticket price will be reimbursed.

+++ Luke Donald (ENG) and his European Ryder Cup vice captains to play in Munich +++ German starters on top form +++ International greats such as defending champion Li Haotong (CHN) and “Player of the Year” Ryan Fox (NZL) to tee off from 21st to 25th June +++ Munich. The BMW International Open will be held for the 34th time this year. Once again a very interesting field will gather at BMW Group’s headquarters for Germany’s most prestigious and most tradition-steeped pro golfing event. The tournament loved by spectators and athletes alike, thanks to its special atmosphere, will be held at Golfclub München Eichenried from 21 st to 25 th June 2023. This year, the Ryder Cup, taking place in Rome (ITA) in autumn with Worldwide Partner BMW, will also play an important role.

With only a few months to go until the unique duel between the best golfers in Europe and those of the defending champions, the USA, at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the Ryder Cup teams will slowly take shape, and the captains will become clearer on who they want as wild card picks. Europe’s captain Luke Donald will have the opportunity to take a look at a wide range of aspriants in Munich. The former world number one and two-time winner of the BMW PGA Championship will also be reaching for his clubs himself. The tournament’s huge significance for the Ryder Cup’s Team Europe is highlighted by the fact that all three vice captains – Thomas Bjørn (DEN, two-time BMW International Open champion), Edoardo Molinari (ITA) and Nicolas Colsaerts (BEL) – will be teeing off.

No doubt the quartet will be keeping a close eye on the many German players who have been attracting attention with excellent results on the two major world tours in recent months. Yannik Paul in third place on the “European Points List” would even qualify for the European team immediately as it stands. Paul won his first title on the DP World Tour (DPWT) last year, as did Max Kieffer , and both golfers will be in action in Munich. Matti Schmid , who made a splash on the PGA Tour when he finished in tied sixth place at “The American Express” in January, will also be teeing off in his home state of Bavaria.

In Marcel Siem , the player of the hour is returning to the golf club in which he grew up as the child of the then club restaurateurs. The 42-year-old not only recently reached the impressive milestone of 500 DPWT tournaments, he also won the Hero Indian Open last weekend, which saw him celebrate a title win once again, more than eight years after his last victory (BMW Masters). Alex Cejka , who has been enjoying success on the Champions Tour since 2020, has won two majors there, and is currently ranked seventh in the season standings, will return to Germany and the DPTW for the BMW International Open.

A range of younger European players who have increasingly attracted attention and will also be part of the field at Golfclub München Eichenried have good reason to hope for a spot on the Ryder Cup team. These include 21-year-old Danish twins Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard , who with two and three DPWT wins to their name respectively have already proved they have what it takes on several occasions. In Abu Dhabi, France’s Victor Perez won the first Rolex Series tournament of the year, and his third title on the DPWT. The interesting quartet is rounded off by Robert MacIntyre of Scotland, who so far on the DPWT has won the “Rookie of the Year 2019” award and two tournaments.

Last year’s winner Li Haotong (CHN), whose emotional reaction to winning the play-off will be remembered for many years to come, will be looking to defend his title in June. Last year’s third-placed golfer, Ryan Fox , will also be teeing off again. The New Zealanders was presented with the Seve Ballesteros Award for the best DPWT player of the year after an incredible 2022 season – beating majors winners Rory McIlroy (NIR) and Matt Fitzpatrick (ENG) to win the award. Spectators can also look forward to seeing three players who are as successful as they are likeable and popular: the two Spaniards Rafa Cabrera Bello and Pablo Larrazábal (two-time BMW International Open champion) and Andrew “Beef” Johnston (ENG), who are also eager not to miss out on the BMW International Open.

Entry to the BMW International Open Pro-Am tournament is free on Wednesday 21st June 2023. Entry is free for children and young people up to the age of 16 on all days.

Day tickets and tournament tickets, as well as VIP tickets for the Fairway Club, are available to purchase online: www.bmw-golfsport.com/tickets See the online ticket shop for further information on all ticket categories – and on concessions for young people over the age of 16, pupils, students, and people with disabilities.

Golf: Daniel Hillier finished third at BMW International Open on European Tour

Kiwi golfer Daniel Hillier has produced the best result of his rookie season on the DP World Tour with a top three finish at the BMW International Open in Munich.

Hillier was leading the tournament at the halfway point but lost the lead after a one-under 71 yesterday. Overnight he carded another 71 to finish at 11-under, two shots back from winner Thriston Lawrence.

Lawrence overhauled Joost Luiten in a tense finish to win by one stroke for his fourth European tour title.

Lawrence started the final round four strokes off the lead but his three-under 69, combined with a two-over 74 for Luiten, was enough for the South African to win on 13-under overall. Luiten bogeyed the 17th and was left needing a birdie on the 18th to force a playoff, but he could only make par.

Lawrence has won all four of his titles in just over a year and a half, since his first at the European tour and Sunshine Tour co-sanctioned Joburg Open in Nov. 2021.

Poland’s Adrian Meronk (68), who is chasing a Ryder Cup spot, was one of four tied for third with Hillier on 11 along with Daniel (71), Rikuya Hoshino (69) and Maximilian Kieffer (68).

Hillier earns 87,078.20 euros ($NZD155,550) and moves up from 110th to 77th on the season standings. The top 119 players earn spots for next season.

AC/DC Launches First Tour in 8 Years: Videos, Photos, Set List

AC/DC launched their European Power Up tour with a performance in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on May 17.

The European trek marks the legendary hard rock group’s first full tour since 2016, though they did perform at the Power Trip festival in 2023. AC/DC certainly got things started with a bang during the Germany gig, delivering a fiery set full of their most celebrated hits.

After a video introduction, the band began their set with “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It),” an emphatic opener that got the crowd cheering. “Wonderful to see you all again!” frontman Brian Johnson declared as the tune came to an end. “Enjoy yourself, OK?” From there, AC/DC launched into “Back in Black,” their iconic 1980 single that had the whole stadium shaking.

READ MORE: AC/DC’s Most Historic Concerts

“Demon Fire” was next in the set, marking the first song of the night from AC/DC’s most recent album, 2020’s Power Up . Still, it was the classic material that fans wanted to hear the most — and AC/DC was more than happy to oblige. “Thunderstruck,” “You Shook Me All Night Long,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” and “Highway to Hell” were just some of the many timeless tracks featured throughout the performance.

After rocking through 22 songs, the band departed the stage momentarily, only to return for a two-song encore of “T.N.T.” and “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You).” See videos and a full set list from the concert below.

Who Is Playing in AC/DC’s New Lineup?

AC/DC’s lineup for the Power Up tour is notably different than the one they used a Power Trip in 2023. Original lead guitarist Angus Young is still in the fold, as is longtime singer Johnson, who arrived in 1980 following the death of Bon Scott . Joining them is rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, who became part of AC/DC after Malcolm Young ’s death in 2017.

The band’s two newest additions are drummer Matt Laug and bassist Chris Chaney, the latter of whom is best known to rock fans for his time in Jane’s Addiction . The Germany gig was Chaney’s first with AC/DC, having officially replaced Cliff Williams — who had been with the group more than 40 years — earlier this year.

AC/DC’s European tour will run through the summer, with the final show scheduled to take place on Aug. 17 in Dublin, Ireland.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift had the perfect outfit for her final Eras Tour show in Paris, considering who was in the audience. The pop star appeared in Kansas City Chiefs colors for the 1989 set of her performance Sunday (May 12), and tight end Travis Kelce adorably jammed out to his superstar girlfriend’s show from the crowd at La Defense Arena.

Following the 1989 set, Swift performed a series of songs from The Tortured Poets Department for just the fourth time so far. Fan videos captured Kelce smiling and dancing along to “So High School,” which many think the singer wrote about the athlete. During the number, she and her dancers swag surf as part of the choreography, a sweet tribute to Chiefs Kingdom.

Later, Swift sang another Tortured Poets track believed to be about Kelce as a surprise song — “The Alchemy” — which she mashed up with Red ‘s “Treacherous.” While she strummed on the guitar, the Ohio native swayed and held up a cute hand heart at the 14-time Grammy winner.

Taylor Swift Kicks Off Her European Eras Tour—With Two New Custom Looks

By Christian Allaire

She’s back! Tonight, Taylor Swift kicked off the European leg of her record-breaking The Eras Tour , performing for a crowd of fans in Paris. Last year, the superstar wore an array of bejeweled fashions on stages across North America. Now, Swift is ready to take on Europe in style—debuting two new customs looks by Atelier Versace for the occasion.

Swift opened the show in a fully-embroidered crystal bodysuit, complete with a bustier boning structure and a degradé of paillettes in various shades of orange. Later on, she also donned a double-breasted blazer embellished with iridescent fuchsia crystals and silver Medusa buttons.

This isn't the first time Swift has worn custom Versace for the Eras Tour (one of the most highest-grossing tours ever ). Designer Donatella Versace has created many looks for the singer over the past year—including other sequined blazers and gem-encrusted bodysuits. Her looks in Paris tonight, then, served as a continuation of the tour's signature blinged-out aesthetic. “Taylor is taking over the world with joy, love, and female power in Versace,” says Donatella Versace of dressing the star. “I love her talent, her hard work, and dedication to her fans. She is a superstar!” She certainly looks the part.
