Langkawi mangrove tour of Kilim Geoforest Park: what to expect

Langkawi mangrove tour of Kilim Geoforest Park: what to expect

This is your ultimate, up-to-date guide on taking a mangrove tour in Langkawi, including how to arrange a tour, expected prices, what to bring with you, and much more.

The classic portrait of Langkawi might be all about sandy beaches and tropical island hopping , but if you scratch a little beneath the surface, a diverse and hidden landscape is ready and waiting. Large parts of the coastline are home to mangroves, providing a barrier to human settlement but an ideal ecosystem and habitat for a range of flora and fauna. This is Kilim Geoforest Park, the first geopark in Southeast Asia

During a visit to Langkawi with kids , be sure to set aside a few hours of your time for a Royal Mangrove Tour . It’s an ideal way to explore the other side of Langkawi, and get up close and personal to this fascinating habitat.

Booking a Langkawi mangrove tour

This is the tour we did: Royal Mangrove Tour in Langkawi . We booked a private tour.

What to expect on a Langkawi mangrove tour

The Langkawi Mangrove tour starts from the Tanjung Rhu Mangrove Jetty at the northernmost tip of Langkawi Island. If you’re catching a Grab from either Kuah or Pantai Cenang, make sure you leave at least 45 minutes to get over here . The jetty can feel slightly disorganised when you first arrive, so you might need to speak to a few people before you find the right boat. There are a few food options here, both small local restaurants and shops selling soft drinks and snacks.

langkawi kilim geoforest park tour

The boat drivers on all the Langkawi tours tend to be pleasantly relaxed and low-key ; they’ll point out wildlife and interesting rock formations, outline the itinerary and answer any questions, but don’t expect non-stop tourist patter. We preferred it this way.

This really is one tour we’d suggest doing privately, rather than as part of a large group. Particularly at the bat cave, the experience can be spoiled somewhat if you’re there at the same time as many other people. Being on a private tour and in charge of your own itinerary (within reason) will also give you more time to relax at the fish farm and restaurant.

There are several other tours offered in Langkawi, including the island hopping tour . Whilst all the tours offer something unique and exciting, we think the Mangrove Tour is a real highlight and is arguably a better option than the island hopping tour.

Drop in on the macaque family

Within the first few minutes of the tour, you’ll drift away from the main waterway and into the mangroves, with the trees arching into the water only a few feet away. The tunnel effect makes the atmosphere still and peaceful, with the near-silence only broken by the distant calls of a macaque family.

If you’re lucky, you may see the macaque family going about their morning routine on a set of rocks, probably just as interested in you, as you are of them. Give them a wave but watch your belongings.

Eagle watching

Another stop on the tour has an nature element, with the chance to feed eagles . The driver will drop chicken scraps into the water for the waiting birds to swoop down and grab a quick brunch. It’s all very touristy of course, and isn’t the most natural of displays, but it’s still a treat to see these graceful birds effortlessly spot, target and collect the offerings.

Eagle in Langkawi

Fish farm and restaurant

One of the main set-pieces of the tour comes at the fish farm and restaurant . After climbing out of your boat, a member of the family will give you a slightly rushed run-through of the different fish and crustaceans kept in the small pens. It’s not always easy to see or hear what you’re being shown and the fish don’t always play ball, but it’s still interesting and worth a stop. If you’re feeling brave, there’s a chance to feed a stingray (don’t worry, the mouth is a long way from the tail).

Try to make time for a drink at the fish restaurant as it’s a picturesque setting overlooking the river and if you catch it at a quiet time, it’s also a relaxing place to take in the scenery and watch the water flow gently past the balcony. They also offer freshly cooked seafood , plus some standard Malay dishes.

langkawi kilim geoforest park tour

Gorilla Mountain

On a few different occasions, the towering Gorilla Mountain will appear on the horizon. Now, we’ve seen our fair share of these rock formations around the world which are supposedly reminiscent of one animal or another. They often require quite the imagination leap to make the connection and only carry a passing resemblance to their supposed animal twin.

We’re happy to report that this one is amazing. It genuinely does look like a majestic gorilla perched on a hillside, passively watching the world go by. We were exceptionally in awe of it, and you probably will be too.

Alongside the fish farm, the other main drawcard of the tour is the Bat Cave . The cave system is only accessible via the river and is home to hundreds of bats that cling to the roof of the cave as tourists stroll past on purpose-built walkways.

There’s a separate entrance fee (RM2 for adults, RM1 for kids aged 4-12). Torches can be hired for RM1 (recommended).

langkawi kilim geoforest park tour

If you’re here at low tide, it’s possible to complete a loop walk of the cave system, otherwise you’ll need to turn back at the end and return the same way. The best part is the twenty metre section in the cave itself, with several viewing areas to observe the bats and their surroundings. Stalactites and stalagmites frame all of your shots and provide natural columns for the walkway to follow. As you leave the cave, the walkway continues past ponds and grand trees before the turnaround or exit point.

Our boys really enjoyed the cave, especially as they carefully illuminated the bats or searched out rock formations. The narrow walkway can get busy if you coincide with a tour group. As is the trend nowadays, everyone apparently needs their own photographic memento of the cave and the queues to avoid the selfie sticks can become an annoyance factor. Bear with it though, the cave is well worth the trouble.

Cruising the Andaman Sea and views of Thailand

The final stage of the tour is a thrilling speedboat burst out into the open Andaman Sea , with no-one around and only the waves for company. Thai islands appear on the starboard side, so close you can almost smell the Pad Thai; indeed, you may well receive a ‘Welcome to Thailand’ text message on your mobile phone!

It’s a fantastic way to end the tour, remember to salute Gorilla Mountain as you pass it for the final time.

Is a Langkawi mangrove tour worthwhile?

Yes, it’s a highly-recommended tour, especially if you can afford to do the private version. Do try and stretch the budget if you can, otherwise you’ll be shunted around with the rest of your shared group.

As a family, we enjoyed spending more time on the boat than we did on the island hopping tour. The mangrove tour feels more relaxing and as if you’re getting to see a more hidden side of Langkawi.

Langkawi mangrove tour

How long is the tour?

The Royal Mangrove Tour last for two hours, depending how long you choose to spend at the fish farm, restaurant and Bat Cave. Factor in the forty minutes transfer time back to the main tourist centres in Langkawi before and afterwards.

How much does a Langkawi Mangrove tour cost?

The tour costs RM270 for the private eight-seater boat. You can pay an extra RM250 if you opt for your own specialist guide.

The only extras are the small entry fee to the Bat Cave, tips (by no means expected or compulsory) and food at the fish restaurant.

What’s the best way to book?

Klook is the easiest way to book the island tour as it’s fixed price and your tour operator will contact you via WhatsApp.

Can you buy food and drinks on the tour?

The only place to buy food and drinks on the tour itself is at the fish restaurant. If you need to stock-up beforehand, it’s best to bring food with you, but there are a few shops at the jetty selling sweets, crisps and drinks.

What should you take on the tour?

  • aqua shoes are handy for jumping in and out of the boat but flip-flops are fine
  • small torch for the bat cave (but they’re cheap to hire)
  • cash for paying for bat cave entrance and fish restaurant
  • a waterproof case is handy for your mobile phone as there can be some splashing

Note that you don’t need swimming gear as there’s no opportunity to go into the water.

Final thoughts on the Langkawi mangrove tour

Time spent on Langkawi is often focused around the beach and relaxation but there’s more to the archipelago than that. The Royal Mangrove Tour is the perfect choice if you’re keen to see another side of the island, that of mangroves and caves. The tour is more relaxing than the island hopping version, with a greater proportion of the trip spent in the boat and less time spent on activities.

The two main stops at the fish farm and bat cave are fun for adults and kids alike, with the fish restaurant an ideal place to grab some food and drink in a tranquil location. Save some sightseeing energy for the final stretch though; the route back via the open seas, almost swinging to within touching distance of Thailand is a great ending, especially with Gorilla Mountain waiting to welcome you home.

How to take mangrove & geoforest park tour.

  • Carry enough sun lotion and drinking water. While most boats have plastic shades, there is also some open space for seating. Try to avoid the open sun exposure. Even while the boat moves and the breeze feels nice, on a sunny day you won't know how your skin may take a battering from the sun.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, contton T-shirts, a hat and shorts.
  • Carry swimwear and towel if your tour offers time at Tanjung Rhu beach.
  • If you plan for a short tour for an hour or two, then reach the Kilim Jetty, take a boat and start around 4pm in the afternoon. By this time most of the tour boats would have returned and you will get a free way of exploring the geopark.

If you’re up for some Mangrove Tour Langkawi fun, book with us. This tour isn’t just sightseeing; it’s an adventure you’ll talk about for ages! Escape to this unique and stunning environment that serves up the most beautiful scenery and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s not just a tour; it’s a hilarious, awe-inspiring, nature-filled extravaganza

Explore The Bat Cave

Welcome to the Bat Caves (Gua Kelawar), an epic stop on the Mangrove Tour Langkawi adventure in Kilim Geoforest Park!

Here, the bat squad consists mainly of Malaysian Fruit Bats—don’t worry, they’re not up for a midnight chat. These nocturnal cuties are snoozing upside down, making adorable squeaking sounds that echo through the cave. They’re experts in echolocation, using sound waves to navigate their surroundings.

As you strut across the 100-meter pontoon or footbridge, a strict rule: shhh! These bats need their beauty sleep, so no noisy disturbances! And hey, no smoking either—definitely not their vibe.

Inside, the caves stretch about 750 sq. meters high, resembling a living bat art gallery on the ceiling! Plus, there’s a cool spot where you might need to duck (around 1 to 3 meters high)—watch your head, it’s part of the bat cave dance routine

So, join us on this quirky bat-tastic adventure and witness these adorable night flyers in their natural habitat. It’s not just a cave visit; it’s a whispering, ducking, and awe-inspiring escapade into the realm of these fascinating creatures

Cruising Along Mangrove Forest

After soaking up the bat cave’s vibes for about 15 minutes, get ready for the real adventure! As the boat cruises through the mangrove forest, brace yourself for a jaw-dropping spectacle. Picture this: lush greenery as far as the eye can see, emerald waters twinkling in the sun, and that fresh forest air doing a happy dance with your inner zen. Oh, and hold onto your hat and shades—these breezy boat rides might just give them wings of their own!

At a medium speed, the cruise lets you glide along smoothly, letting you soak in nature’s serenity. It’s like a soothing balm for the soul. Keep those eagle eyes peeled! Who knows, you might spot some tree-dwelling reptiles or catch a show put on by the vibrant bird squad soaring overhead if luck is on your side. It’s not just a boat ride; it’s a thrilling, nature-packed escapade that’s as wild as it gets

Eagle feeding during your Mangrove Tour Langkawi? Get ready for a serene, tranquil experience that’ll soothe your soul and leave you in pure awe.

As our boat gently glides through the waters, the engines purr softly, setting the stage for a serene encounter. We sprinkle chicken skin not for thrills, but to invite our graceful eagle friends for a calm, peaceful coasting session.

Ever wondered why these majestic creatures gather around us? It’s a feast! Fishermen toss out small fish, creating a delightful banquet for these regal birds.

Now, picture this tranquil scene: the sky adorned with these magnificent beings, showcasing their effortless flight. Among them, the enchanting Brown-winged Kingfisher, a true symbol of Langkawi’s natural beauty, and the elusive Red Eagle, a mystical sight exclusive to this paradise. This is an opportunity for nature enthusiasts to witness the tranquility of Langkawi’s Red Eagle during their Mangrove Tour Langkawi.

It’s not just about birdwatching; it’s about basking in nature’s calming embrace, witnessing the beauty of the world in its most peaceful form. Join us for this relaxing journey where the majestic flight of these eagles becomes a melody of tranquility.

Guess what? The Crocodile Cave, or Gua Buaya, is no ordinary cave—it’s a stone-cold crocodile lookalike! Picture this: its entrance resembles a giant croc, from snout to tail, with a mouth and teeth to boot as you exit. Just watch out, it might give you a playful snap!

This cave’s a celeb in Kilim Geoforest Park, where the Kilim River smoothly flows. But here’s the scoop: it’s only party time during low tide when the river connects the dots, making this place the hotspot. Back in the day, it was the rumored hangout spot for crocs, but now it’s a chill pad for funky limestone formations and a bat crew that calls it home.

So, join us for a mind-blowing fact: the Crocodile Cave isn’t just a cave—it’s a croc-shaped hangout where limestone and bats party together. Talk about a funky twist in nature’s tale

As we sail onward through Kilim Geoforest Park after our jaunt through the Bat Cave, you’ll notice the boat gradually slowing down as the canal starts to narrow. Ahoy, we’ve reached the Monkey’s Home! Keep your eyes peeled along the riverbanks—you might catch a glimpse of these cheeky fellas, often with their families in tow.

Our skilled boatmen will aim to get us as close to the banks as possible. Don’t be taken aback if a few curious monkeys hop aboard! They’re on the lookout for a snack, and guess what? You’re their ticket to a treat! Channel your inner babysitter as you help them sip from a mineral water bottle. Trust me, they’ll love it! These monkeys are the friendliest bunch around, so sit back, relax, and enjoy this unique, up-close encounter

Snorkel Or Fish Feeding Dangli Island

It’s a 20-minute boat ride to reach Dangli Island, slightly outside Kilim Geoforest Park. This spot’s so cool; on a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of Thailand from here! And when the water’s crystal clear, it’s like looking through a window to an underwater paradise—corals and colorful fishes galore

Snorkeling’s the name of the game, folks! Snag your snorkel set, or if you’re without one, no worries—rentals are available at the jetty. Splash into the water and dive in for an underwater adventure. Fish buddies are eagerly awaiting your visit! But hey, if you’d rather stay dry, share some crackers with them instead.

At Dangli Island, there’s no sandy beach to laze around; it’s a massive limestone structure rising from the sea. All the fun and action happen right from the boat. So, whether you’re diving into the water or chilling on deck, get ready for an aquatic escapade unlike any other

Private Beach

After your splashy adventure at Dangli Island, hop aboard as we whisk you away to the private beach along Pantai Pasir Panjang. Brace yourself for some seaside bliss! This spot’s a gem—a few beaches facing the Andaman Sea with jaw-dropping vistas.

You’ve got about 45 minutes to soak in the sun, take a dip, or even set up a lovely picnic with your favorite person. Picture this: no buildings, no crowds—just you and fellow travelers soaking up the serenity. Remember, it’s our own slice of paradise, so let’s keep it pristine. Please, no littering! Let the little ones go wild building sandcastles and having a blast. And hey, rest assured, it’s all perfectly safe for a worry-free beach day

Hey photo enthusiasts! Listen up for the ultimate tip at Kilim Geoforest Park—a killer pic spot! Look out for this cool thing on the ancient limestone wall—it’s like a massive turtle rock just hanging out up there!

This spot’s a must-snap for your family album—a solid proof that you’ve hit up Kilim Geoforest Park! Our boat crew’s got your back. They’ll steer us just right so you can grab a pic with this epic turtle-shaped backdrop. Get ready to strike a pose and make it a memory worth sharing

Floating Restaurant and Fish Farm

After sailing for what felt like ages, we finally roll up to the floating restaurant hooked onto the fish farms. But before you get cozy, there’s a sneak peek lined up! The crew’s all about showing off the A-listers—the stingrays, groupers, seabass, and their fishy pals, chillin’ right up close. These guys are the real deal, destined for the plates at the restaurant, making it the freshest seafood fiesta you’ll have in Langkawi!

Quick rundown: spend about 10 minutes getting to know the underwater celebs, then it’s grub time at the restaurant (your treat, of course). And hey, veggies in the house? Just give ’em a shout-out, they’ll sort something special for you. Not feeling the restaurant vibe? No sweat! Just tell your boat crew, and you can hop back aboard. Talk about options, right?

Langkawi mangrove area actually consists of three river estuaries. there is also a bat cave within the kilim geoforest park mangrove in langkawi a favorite stop for tourists. limestone, inherently porous, forms caves and there are several in the mangrove tour langkawi..

Back to the mangrove tour Langkawi, you will make a stop at Bat Cave. The boatman will berth the boat closely to the jetty, so you can step out to the stairs that lead to the cave mouth. Walk along the walkway to the cave entrance, then enter the cave. Once you inside, you will 'feel' something on top of you. That are the bats. Use the torch light to spot them - hundreds of bat hanging at the cave ceiling. If you snap a photo with the flash on, you will able to see the bats and the cave ceiling clearly on your monitor screen. Keep walking. At the other end, there is another cave mouth, so you just walk straight further and start looking outside of the cave with half round until come to the jetty - the boat is ready to proceed your tour.

Wan Mangrove Tour Langkawi not only with the cave but also a tour to explore and knowing the animal, birds and dolphin. The boat continue to cruise to the mangrove area where the boatman will throw some chicken intestine into the water, in minutes, a dozens of Brahminy Kite fly out from the mangrove trees to catch their 'food'. Snap the flying eagle with your camera. The eagle is flying up and down around the boat. This what they called eagle feeding. Done with the eagle feeding, proceed your mangrove tour to the open ocean, here you can see Street of Malacca. Over there look at the huge signage saying 'KILIM GEOFOREST PARK'. Many people went there to take photo of the signage.

The Kilim mangrove tour  is not end yet, because the boatman will then proceed to the Crocodile Cave. It is a cave but without a crocodile. Unlike Bat Cave, we can meet bats, but not Mr. Croc. Our amazing Langkawi Mangrove Tour in Kilim Geoforest Park.

by Emma · Published June 28, 2019 · Updated May 13, 2020

During our stay on Langkawi Island, Malaysia, we sought a responsible tour company to take us to the Kilim Geoforest Park for a mangrove tour and cave exploring. It was an amazing day out, and we were very impressed with our chosen company’s   efforts to preserve Langkawi’s natural beauty and educate tourists about exploring with minimal impact. This is the account of our Mangrove Boat Trip with  Dev’s Adventure Tours .

Kilim Geoforest Park

The Kilim Geoforest Park is one of three Geoforests on Pulau Langkawi, which itself was designated a Geopark by UNESCO in 2007. Kilim is reportedly the most successful ecotourism destination on Langkawi and features a wide variety of natural features including coastal karst, caves, pristine mangrove forests, flora and fauna, fossils, and the oldest carbonate rock in the region; formed 490-370 million years ago.

The entrance of Kilim Geoforest Park

The entrance of Kilim Geoforest Park

The Kilim Geoforest Park is located on the north-east of Langkawi island, and the Kilim River Tourist jetty is where all boat tours depart from.

Our Langkawi Mangrove Tour with Dev’s Adventure Tours

Dev’s are the only tour company we could find who are committed to responsible tourism in the Kilim Geoforest. We took a Mangrove Boat Trip with them and were amazed at how many other companies were doing the same thing. There were hundreds of tourists boarding boats as well as us, and realising that most of them were not focussed on exploring responsibly saddened me. But our tour was also full of people committed to a better experience for Langkawi, which was heartening.

Many boats ready to depart for a Langkawi Mangrove Tour.

Dev’s collected us from our accommodation in a minibus in the morning, and we waited for our fellow participants at the jetty. We met other travellers and our kids were fitted for lifejackets while we were waiting.

Our guide Khiri was a wealth of information and was obviously passionate about leaving no trace of our visit. He even kindly but firmly spoke to guests of other tour companies when we were in the Kelaware caves, as they hadn’t been informed about ways to minimise disruption to the bats overhead.

Khiri took us to the bat cave first, and much to Dante and Allegra’s delight there were monkeys hanging around the entrance. (We didn’t pass through the crocodile cave on our tour).

We had been warned to do our utmost not to disturb the bats, and despite the smell, we all enjoyed our short exploration. Khiri shone the torch to show them only when everyone was quiet and ready, and we didn’t stay for long in each cave to minimise our invasion of their sleeping quarters.

We then explored along the beautiful mangrove forest for the river safari, and some keen eyes spotted viper snakes, kingfishers, monkeys, dingoes, butterflies, and a monitor lizard. We quietly stopped a few times to try and get photos of them but did not get too close or coax them in any way.

I didn’t manage to get many good pictures of the animals we spotted! But it was still great to see them. These are my best shots:

Some wild dingoes we spotted on our Langkawi Mangrove Tour.

Wild dingoes! I didn’t know they lived outside of Australia until seeing them here.

Spotting a wild snake in the Kilim Geoforest Park.

Zoomed in as far as I could to get a picture of a sleeping viper snake. Can you see it?

A monitor lizard going about its day.

This is how far away we were to get pictures of the monitor lizard.

We then rode out on the open ocean, and under some rain clouds! We got soaked for about five minutes from a heavy downpour, which eased up just as we arrived at a small but beautiful secluded beach.

The water came in from everywhere! It was wild and windy for a short time, but we never felt unsafe.

The water came in from everywhere! It was wild and windy for a short time, but we never felt unsafe.

Water from above and below! The rain was heavy but brief.

The rain was heavy but brief.

The little beach was picture-perfect with golden sand, clear water, and surrounding greenery. There was a rope swing but no other amenities, so we only stopped for about half an hour to play and swim in the lovely water.

The beautiful secluded beach.

The beautiful secluded beach, part of our boat ride with Dev’s Adventure tours.

It was the most beautiful beach we had found in Langkawi, though we didn’t get to Tanjung Rhu. Dante, Allegra and I relished the soft sand and clear water, which was warm even though a few sprinkles of rain were still coming down.

It was also lovely just to explore the rugged beauty of the little beachfront; a reminder of what all of Langkawi must’ve once looked like.

Dante swimming in the shallow waters.

Light rain made swimming a lovely but unusual experience for us!

Khiri collected some rubbish that washed up on the beach and told us later that it washes up every day from a huge garbage patch out at sea.

We accidentally left Dante’s sandals there and didn’t realise until much later. The boat driver offered to take Anthony back to the beach to collect them, and Ant saw that pile of floating trash on the return trip. He was amazed at how big it was, and how quickly it had come closer to shore.

Dante still swimming, Allegra on the rope swing, Khiri collecting trash and other tour members exploring the beautiful beach.

Dante still swimming, Allegra on the rope swing, Khiri collecting trash and others exploring the beautiful beach.

A floating island of garbage closeby just doesn’t seem possible after enjoying such natural island beauty, but it’s always there, washing more trash onto the shore each day.

We could see Thailand in the distance as we departed the beach, which was a much nicer reminder of what we should be able to view from Pulau Langkawi. You might be able to get to this little beach on an island hopping tour: best to ask your guide first.

Viewing a part of Thailand from our mangrove tour.

Thailand in the distance!

Next was the eagle feeding area, which is the most controversial part of the tours. In a particular open area, many companies had started throwing kilos of chicken skin and scraps overboard to attract eagles for their guests to see.

So many tour guides did it over the years that the eagles stopped hunting, and their population decreased as their nutrient profile was altered so much that their eggs weren’t hatching. Snake populations also subsequently increased, as they had more eggs to eat.

Another tour boat splashing up water to attract the eagles.

The other tour boat splashed up some water to attract the eagles.

Khiri explained this history to us and noted that Dev’s were one of a few companies responsible for educating the other guides about what was happening. Now, instead of each boat taking so much chicken with them, they only take a few hundred grams each. The eagles still hunt for food to supplement their diet, and their population is on the increase again.

Many eagles circling the other tour boat for chicken scraps.

So many eagles came to feed on the chicken scraps.

Dev’s tours do not feed the eagles at all, but we did watch another tour boat doing it from afar. It’s a tricky situation as so many tourists expect the eagle feeding, so most of the tours want to give them the experience.

But I think that if the companies didn’t advertise it, tourists wouldn’t expect it and the eagles would stop relying on being fed, however small the amount.

After watching for awhile we headed to a floating restaurant for lunch, which was pre-booked and also popular with other tour companies. It was good food and they had some Western options for kids: most of which from our tour promptly fell asleep! Dante was the oldest and he stayed awake while the adults chatted and the little kids rested.

The beautiful floating restaurant where we had lunch.

The beautiful floating restaurant where we had lunch.

Within the restaurant compound, there was also a floating fish farm and we had a look around it after lunch. (I didn’t seem to get pictures though, sorry!) Then it was back to the bus drop off, and back to our respective accommodations.

It was a great experience for all of us, as it gave us a well-rounded tour without feeling rushed or creating harm along the way. There was enough to look at and chat about to keep young kids engaged, and Khiri also had plenty of information to answer our questions and elaborate on any topic.

We left our tour tired but happy to have seen some wild animals and the raw natural beauty of Langkawi. I definitely recommend Dev’s who now have more day tours available, including cycling, kayaking and hiking (they don’t offer road tours though). I would’ve loved to go kayaking if it was an option when we were there, as we really enjoyed it from our eco-resort on Tioman Island .

Dev’s also no longer use plastic water bottles on any of their tours, which is fantastic for reducing their waste. From my understanding, all other tour companies still use plastic water bottles.

A glass water bottle used by Dev's Adventure Tours.

Dev’s glass water bottles have replaced plastic ones for tourists.

It is excellent to know that a company is committed to reducing waste, preserving ecosystems, and ensuring their island’s tourism is sustainable. Their professional and fun attitude and their ongoing commitment to improvement are admirable qualities for a tour company, especially in such a popular destination.

Please note that our guide Khiri is no longer working with Dev’s, but I am sure any of their other naturalist guides would also do a great job of educating and inspiring you along the way. This company consistently gets great reviews on Tripadvisor .

Kilim Geoforest Park

Introduction.

  • A place with an ancient geological heritage, countless natural wonders, home to a myriad of flora and fauna, and a vibrant local community of Kilim Village.

langkawi kilim geoforest park tour

Kilim Geoforest Park (or Kilim Karst Geoforest Park as its full name) is one of the three geoforest parks associated with the Langkawi Geopark. The other two are the Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park and The Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park.

Langkawi Geopark comprises the whole of Langkawi Island, which is one of the districts of Kedah State, Malaysia. Langkawi started as a fishing village until its revelation as a UNESCO Geopark.

Langkawi was endorsed as the 52nd Global Geopark by UNESCO on 1st June 2007, making it the 1st geopark in Malaysia and the South East Asia region. This endorsement was given due to its significant geoheritage features like landscapes, caves sea arches and sea stacks, dropstones, fossil and local community involvement.

Langkawi Geopark is a member of the Asia Pacific Geoparks Network and The Global Geoparks Network (GGN).

Beauty of Kilim

langkawi kilim geoforest park tour

Not so long ago, Kilim was a laid back place where people’s activities are connected mainly to small scale fishing. Today, Kilim can be regarded as the most successful ecotourism destination in Langkawi where economic activities have vastly improved.

The beauty of Kilim lies in its diverse natural geological, biological and cultural resources with high heritage value. These elements have been the pillars for the success of Kilim’s ecotourism.

Among the remarkable features found here are the pristine mangrove and limestone forests, dramatic karstic landscapes and landform and colourful cultures.

Kilim is also unique because it is the only place in Malaysia where one can find a coexistence of coastal karst and mangrove ecosystems.

These unique landscapes provide new experience to tourists who flock this area to observe a wide spectrum of geological heritage diversity, such as various types of rock, beautiful caves, coastal and island karst morphologies, fossils, as well as rich mangrove fauna and flora.
