10 Best Cruises to Jamaica and the Caribbean

Enjoy the island spirit on a cruise to the land of reggae and rum.

cruise to jamaica pictures

Oceania Cruises

Jamaica is one of the most popular Caribbean destinations, and if you've ever lounged on one of the island's gorgeous beaches with a fruit-filled rum punch in hand, it's easy to understand why. It helps that Jamaica is extremely accessible. You can fly there (direct from New York City in four hours, at that), but many prefer the experience of island hopping onboard a Caribbean cruise.

The major cruise ports of Jamaica are Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Falmouth, and Kingston. On the northeastern coast, there's also Port Antonio, which isn't suitable for most large ships but attracts boutique cruise lines and private yachts.

Whether you're interested in discovering pirate history, hiking through the rainforest to see waterfalls, or searching for the best jerk chicken on the island, you're bound to find a cruise itinerary that suits you. Explore some of the best cruises to Jamaica. And don't forget to check for seasonal festivals that take place at each port.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Alastair Miller/Viking Cruises

This 14-night round-trip cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, stops in seven countries. The ship sails the Caribbean for two days before making its first stop in Montego Bay, Jamaica. There cruise-goers can hike the rain forest, visit Dunn's River Falls, or ride a bamboo raft down the Great River, among other excursions. The cruise offers activities for foodies, thrill seekers, history buffs, and beach bums.

After departing Montego Bay, the ship sails the Caribbean and Panama Canal for two days before making its next stop at Colón, Panama. Visit Indigenous villages or take a walk around the colorful city. The following stops — Puerto Limón, Costa Rica; Roatán, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; and Cozumel, Mexico — showcase the Caribbean's lushest landscapes, ancient Mayan ruins, pristine beaches, and lively towns.

Between ports, a historian lectures on pirates and treasure hunters, pre-Columbian civilizations, and the Age of Discovery aboard the 930-guest Viking Mars . When you aren't attending a lesson, you can book a treatment at the Nordic spa, catch a live performance in the theater, or order a martini in the Explorers' Lounge.

Carnival Cruise Line

Aboard the Carnival Sunrise, cruisers depart from Miami for a five-night trip . Spend the first day at sea before arriving at Grand Cayman. On the island, you can visit a rum cake factory or go snorkeling. After leaving the Cayman Islands, the ship moves on to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, where excursions include driving through woodlands in a dune buggy among other options. The ship then spends another day at sea before arriving back in Miami.

Onboard dining options include a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant, Guy's (as in Guy Fieri's) Burger Joint, a barbecue spot, a cantina, and a sushi joint. Adults can find a quiet spot in the 21-and-up Serenity Retreat, or they can get together in a pub, lounge, or piano bar.

For kids, Seuss at Sea provides a character parade, interactive story time, themed breakfasts, and crafting sessions. Meanwhile, Camp Ocean offers supervised activities like games, dancing, movies, video games, and kids-only meals.

Travel from Panama City to Miami on Oceania Cruises' Sirena , stopping along the South American coast along the way. After a day of sailing through the Panama Canal, the first stop of this 10-day cruise is Cartagena, Colombia. Here, guests can hop off the ship to see mansions and a historic fort. The following day is dedicated to Santa Marta, Colombia's oldest city.

The ship then visits Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curacao; and Kralendijk, Bonaire, before turning its bow to the north toward Florida. After a day of sailing the Caribbean, the ship drops anchor at Port Antonio, Jamaica, the gateway to Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park . Guests get a chance to hike, swim, and explore the town square for a day before sailing the Atlantic. A day trip in The Bahamas' capital, Nassau, is the perfect penultimate stop before you reach your final destination, Miami.

Stay entertained while at sea with the pool, theater, casino, and spa. Guests can also visit a wide variety of restaurants or enjoy an afternoon tea service.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean

Depart Orlando for a six-night, round-trip cruise that kicks off with a day at sea. In Labadee, Haiti, the first stop, guests can enjoy plenty of beach time and even zip line over the ocean. From there, the ship travels to Falmouth, Jamaica, located between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Choose from excursions like river tubing, swimming at the Blue Hole, or sample and learn about Jamaican coffee. Another option outside of tours is the Artisan Village which easily connects Jamaican artists and their work to cruisers.

With another day at sea, travelers can enjoy the spa, fitness center, live performances, kids' activities, and a variety of restaurants aboard the Adventure of the Seas . Fill a day at Royal Caribbean's private Bahamian CocoCay at Thrill Waterpark, where you can ride down North America's tallest waterslide, or Coco Beach Club, which features an overwater cabana. The cay is also home to Chill Island, a beach "neighborhood" where you'll find quiet relaxation, cabana rentals, and restaurants. The next morning, the ship arrives back in Orlando.

Disney Cruise Line

David Rourke/Disney Cruise Line

Consider taking a tour of the Kennedy Space Center before boarding the Disney Fantasy in Cape Canaveral. The first full day of this seven-night cruise is spent at sea, but pools, a spa, kids' clubs, restaurants, games, and entertainment provide much to do on the way to Cozumel, Mexico. There, guests can snorkel or dive among coral reefs, shop for handmade souvenirs, and relax on the beach.

The next port is George Town on Grand Cayman, where you can explore the botanical gardens, swim at Seven Mile Beach, or visit the town's shops and restaurants. In Falmouth, Jamaica, the next day, optional activities include a zip-line adventure, waterfall hike, or Good Hope Estate. Enjoy the ship's amenities while cruising to Disney Castaway Cay.

On this private island, guests will find a water play area, a white-sand beach, walking trails, a snorkeling lagoon, boat rentals, a teen hideout, and adults-only Serenity Bay. Don't forget to check into other Disney Cruise tips and secrets before you go. The ship sails overnight to arrive in Port Canaveral for disembarkation.

Celebrity Cruises

Michel Verdure/Celebrity Cruises

Departing from Fort Lauderdale, a six-night cruise onboard the Celebrity Apex makes its way to The Bahamas for its first port-of-call, CocoCay. Visitors can take a dip in the Caribbean's largest freshwater pool, get a different perspective from a hot air balloon, or order a drink from the swim-up bar.

The next port of call, the historic town of Falmouth, Jamaica, has a wide range of activities. Take a trip to the Green Grotto Caves and Dunn's River Falls or raft along Martha Brae River. In George Town on Grand Cayman, guests can shop, go on a catamaran cruise, snorkel, or sample the island's cuisine, including conch.

With two days spent at sea, the third and sixth days, guests have time to enjoy the ship's restaurants, casino, cocktail lounges, and entertainment.

MSC Cruises

Ivan Sarfatti/MSC Cruises

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) offers a well-rounded 14-night itinerary aboard the MSC Divina , which departs and returns to Miami. While this voyage visits eight countries, there's a total of five days at sea. That means guests will have plenty of downtime to rest and enjoy the ship. Onboard the elegant ship, cruisers will find a casino, a spa, kids' and teens' clubs, restaurants, and bars.

The first stop is the Bahamian capital, Nassau, where guests can kick off their two-week vacation with a VIP cabana experience on Blue Lagoon Island. The ship returns to Miami for a day before continuing on to Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

In Ocho Rios, you can swim in the sparkling iris Blue Hole or climb to the top of Konoko Falls. Next up is Oranjestad, Aruba where travelers take in the turquoise waters of Arashi Beach or learn about aloe farming at the Aruba Aloe Museum & Factory .

Subsequent ports include Cartagena, Colombia, a UNESCO World Heritage site with cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings; Colón, Panama; and Puerto Limón, Costa Rica. In Colón, experience Emberá culture up the Chagres River or see sloths and tropical birds near Gatún Lake. Take the day in Puerto Limón to explore the jungle, looking for crocodiles, monkeys, and manatees.

Following a day ashore on the Honduran island of Roatán, Honduras, the ship turns north once again toward Miami.

Holland America Line

SeanPavonePhoto/Getty Images

Spend three weeks sailing turquoise waters with Holland America Line . The cruise includes a total of five days at sea, meaning there is plenty of downtime to enjoy the ship without getting cabin fever. Throughout the round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, guests visit 11 countries throughout both the eastern and western corners of the Caribbean.

After setting sail from Florida, Eurodam first turns westward toward the Bahamas, Jamaica, Honduras, Belize, and Mexico. Ports include Half Moon Bay Falmouth, Roatán, Belize City, and Cozumel. The ship then turns north to return to Fort Lauderdale, with a stop in Key West along the way, before making its way to the eastern Caribbean.

The second half of the cruise visits Philipsburg, Saint Maarten; St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda; Fort-De-France, Martinique; Roseau, Dominica; Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Guests can enjoy one more visit to Half Moon Bay in the Bahamas before returning to Fort Lauderdale for disembarkation.

Excursions, while an additional fee, include snorkeling, nature walks, visits to Mayan ruins, zip line adventures, boating to secluded beaches, and even walking underwater for a scuba-like experience without needing certification.

On board the ship, spend time relaxing with a spa treatment, getting active playing pickleball, or listening to a live performance.

Explora Journeys

MarcioDufranc/Getty Images

Setting off on a 10-night round-trip voyage from Miami, the Explora II sails for a day on its way to Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Onboard, guests can enjoy their ocean-view suites, nine restaurants, or four pools. Of course, there is also a luxurious spa, live entertainment, and high-end shopping such as Cartier and Rolex.

In Ocho Rios, music aficionados should visit Nine Mile, where Bob Marley began his career and is now buried. Spend another day at sea en route to the Honduran island of Roatán. There, tour the Roatán Rum Company and enjoy trying a few dishes to experience the island's culture.

Next up is Belize City, Belize. Here, a chocolate farm and the first jaguar reserve are just two of many exciting options — including the Great Blue Hole . The ship then spends several days circumnavigating Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

Ports include Cozumel and Progreso. Off the coast of Cozumel, divers can visit a Mesoamerican reef. Alternatively, guests can head inland to swim in cenotes. Mayan culture is prominent in Progreso thanks to sites that have been immaculately preserved such as Chichén Itzá, one of the seven new wonders of the world . Spend a last day onboard, sailing north, for disembarkation in Miami.

Princess Cruises

hzechphotography/Getty Images

Many cruises leave from ports in Florida, but this 10-night Princess cruise embarks in the Gulf of Mexico from Galveston, Texas. Aboard the Regal Princess , guests will visit five countries and spend four days at sea making this a well-balanced itinerary. Enjoy the ship's amenities including seven restaurants, cooking demonstrations, a relaxing massage at the spa, or join a Pure Barre class.

The ship starts southward with its first stops including Cozumel, Mexico; Roatán, Honduras; and Belize City, Belize. Following a day at sea, the cruise continues on to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. The ship then cruises back to Galveston for disembarkation.

Colorful Cozumel offers cruise-goers great shopping and access to Mayan ruins while Roatán offers adrenaline-pumping activities like zip lining. Those who can't get enough of snorkeling will find ample opportunity among the Belize Barrier Reef, Montego Bay, and off the coast of Grand Cayman's Seven Mile Beach. In fact, Belize and the Cayman Islands are among the best snorkeling destinations in the world . So, be prepared to rent (or pack your own) mask and fins.

8 Best Cruises to Jamaica for Every Type of Traveler

By Meena Thiruvengadam

Crystal blue water and white sand beach

There’s no other voyage quite like a cruise to Jamaica , the Caribbean island that’s the birthplace of both reggae music and the legendary musician Bob Marley. When your ship arrives in port, you’ll find reef-lined sandy beaches, soaring mountains, tropical rainforests, and rum cocktails you’ll be daydreaming about for months.

Jamaica is home to five cruise ports equipped to handle everything from intimate yachts to mega-ships. Ocho Rios is Jamaica’s largest port and a gateway to attractions like Dunn’s River Falls. Montego Bay is a golfer’s dream while Kingston, the Jamaican capital, offers an opportunity to visit the Bob Marley Museum and dine at a restaurant owned by Olympian Usain Bolt. Here's everything to know about booking a cruise to Jamaica .

All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission. This story has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

What cruise lines sail to Jamaica?

Several cruise lines sail to Jamaica with most itineraries departing from the United States. Royal Caribbean sails to Jamaica from Tampa, Florida. Celebrity cruises to both Ocho Rios and another Jamaican port, Falmouth. Carnival has several itineraries that stop in Jamaica, including a few that sail the Panama Canal. Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises sail to both Montego Bay, located on the northern side of the island, and Ocho Rios. MSC, Norwegian , and Holland America also include Jamaica on their cruise itineraries.

MSC alone offers more than 50 cruises that stop in Jamaica.

Jamaica cruise itineraries often depart from Texas or Florida and include other Caribbean islands. Some include more adventures, sailing to Central America or through the Panama Canal.

What cruise ships sail to Jamaica?

Cruises to Jamaica tend to be longer, with many itineraries falling into the five- to seven-night range, so you’ll need more than a long weekend for this vacation. Ships sailing here tend to be larger and stacked with onboard entertainment and activities. Most ships sailing to Jamaica, like Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas , the Norwegian Escape , and the MSC Meraviglia , carry thousands of passengers, but Viking Cruises and Oceania Cruises sail to Jamaica on ships that carry 1,200 passengers or less.

Whatever kind of cruise experience you’re looking for, you can find it on a ship headed toward the sandy beaches and reggae beats of Jamaica. These are some of the best Jamaica cruises for every kind of traveler.

Which Jamaica cruise port is better?

Ocho Rios on Jamaica’s northern coast is the island's largest and best-located cruise port. It offers easy access to two of Jamaica’s top attractions—Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain, where you’ll find bobsledding and zip-lining—and several of Jamaica’s most popular activities. In Ocho Rios, you can ride horses on the beach, take a tour to learn about Bob Marley and the roots of reggae music, or relax on sandy beaches. The port is a quick walk from town, making it easy to explore on your own if you choose not to take an excursion.

What is the best month to cruise to Jamaica?

There’s no place like Jamaica to escape winter. Jamaica’s dry season stretches from mid-December through April and brings sunny days with pleasant temperatures. Cruise to Jamaica between mid-December and April for perfect beach days and good weather for exploring rainforests and local markets. Avoid cruising the Caribbean in August and September, which is peak hurricane season.

Check out Dunn’s River Falls and go for a swim at the Blue Hole. Relax on a bamboo raft, ride horses, listen to reggae or try zip-lining. Back on board the Nieuw Statendam , enjoy having one of the ship’s 12 oceanview solo staterooms all to yourself. These solo staterooms are small —between 127 and 172 square feet— but with so much to do onboard that might not matter. The Nieuw Statendam is a Pinnacle Class ship with several live entertainment venues, an expansive fitness center, shopping, and a spa. There are multiple dining options on board, and the cruise line hosts several events for solo travelers each sailing. The Nieuw Statendam ’s Western Caribbean itinerary departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and also stops in Cozumel, the Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas.

Five-night itineraries also stop in Labadee, Haiti.

The  11-night itinerary visits the Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. In Ocho Rios, guests can choose from several excursions including a traditional bamboo rafting tour. Adults may prefer the island tour and rum-tasting excursion. From Falmouth, cruise passengers can opt to ride a bamboo raft along the Martha Brae River, climb to the top of Dunn’s River Falls, or lounge on the beach. This is an area of Jamaica known for its long emerald rivers, caves, waterfalls, and beaches, there may be no better place to relax in Jamaica.

For a longer cruise, consider the  Celebrity Beyond ’s 11-night Southern Caribbean itinerary which adds a stop in Cartagena, Colombia.

Best cruise to Jamaica for partying

If you’re looking to party on your Jamaican cruise , look no further than Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival is the cruise line for travelers looking to let loose on vacation and is known for its fun onboard atmosphere. Carnival sails to Ocho Rios and Montego Bay from Florida.

The  Carnival Sunrise sails roundtrip from Miami to Ocho Rios, Jamaica's most popular cruise port. This five-night itinerary starts with a day at sea—the perfect way to ease yourself into vacation mode, especially if you spent the night before sailing sampling Miami’s epic nightlife. The ship’s first port is Ocho Rios, where travelers can climb the 600-foot Dunn’s River Falls, drive a dune buggy through Jamaican woodlands, swim with dolphins, ride horses on the beach or try out river tubing. The ship stops in Grand Cayman before making its way back to Miami.

Onboard, spend your sea days sipping cocktails by the pool. Spend your evenings at the Red Frog Pub, the onboard piano bar, or laughing your heart out at the ship’s comedy club.

Best megaship cruise to Jamaica

To cruise to Jamaica with everything you could ever want on board, book yourself on the Norwegian Escape , a ship built in 2015 that can accommodate more than 4,200 passengers. This is a ship with dining options to suit even the pickiest palates. There’s even an American Diner on board should you get a little homesick.

The Escape cruises to Jamaica on a  seven-day itinerary that includes stops in Cozumel, Mexico, George Town, Grand Cayman, and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, in addition to Ocho Rios, where it spends a full day in port. Excursion options in Ocho Rios include a 4x4 safari to Dunn’s River Falls, island sightseeing and beach breaks.

The itinerary includes two sea days, offering plenty of time for lounging by the pool or relaxing by the spa. Or try your hand at the ship’s ropes course and catch a show at the onboard comedy club.

Best smaller ship Jamaica cruise

If you’re looking for a luxury cruise experience and a trip of a lifetime that stops in Jamaica, Viking has you covered with its  15-day Panama Canal and Central America itinerary on board the Viking Star. The Viking Star is smaller than most of the cruise ships that call on Jamaica. It accommodates just 930 guests, ensuring top-notch service for everyone on board.

Being a smaller ship, you won't find the same breadth of dining and entertainment offerings on board the Viking Star as you may on other cruise lines calling on Jamaica, but you're guaranteed not to get hungry or get bored on this luxury vessel. The Viking Star has two pools, a spa, and a fitness center. It also has a sports deck, piano lounge, and a handful of dining venues. This is a cruise line that focuses on enrichment, so expect lots of opportunities to learn about your destinations along the way.

Viking’s Panama Canal and Central America journey begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale. It takes passengers on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Cozumel, Mexico; Belize City, Belize; Roatan, Honduras; and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, before sailing through a portion of the Panama Canal. Its last stop before returning to Fort Lauderdale is Montego Bay.

Best long cruise to Jamaica

Oceania's  27-day Rome to Miami Grand Caribbean Crossing may be the most exciting way to make your way to Jamaica. This epic journey begins in Rome and spends a day sailing the Mediterranean Sea before sailing to Valencia and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain. From Spain, the Oceania Vista crosses the Atlantic Ocean for just over two weeks of hopping around some of the Caribbean's top destinations. The cruise stops in Antigua, Puerto Rico, and Cozumel, before eventually making its way to Montego Bay.

This itinerary does include several sea days, but with cabins that feel more like a home than a room on a ship, lots of great food, and a selection of cocktail experiences, you may not mind. The luxurious ship also offers cooking classes, shows, a spa, and lots of gorgeous photo spots.

Arguably, the number one destination for cruise passengers when they visit Ocho Rios is Dunn’s River Falls .  The draw to these famous falls is the scenic climb from the white sandy beach at the bottom of the falls, all 180 feet up, to the very top.  Along the way, tourists stop to take photos of its gorgeous cascading waters and enjoy its many the pools.  Climbing is usually accomplished in groups with some human chain formation and the assistance of a local tour guide.

Be warned, the falls are slippery and can be somewhat tricky or strenuous for some.  Water shoes are highly recommended.  This biggest complaint about the falls has always been the aggressiveness of the vendors at the Craft Market as you exit.  If not interested in shopping, a simple, “No thank you”, is all that’s required.

The Blue Hole

ocho rios the blue hole

Another hugely popular waterfall destination is The Blue Hole .  Instead of climbing this waterfall from top to bottom, cruise passengers can jump their way down the falls.  Most of the jumps are fairly small and easily done by children 10 years and older.  For adrenaline junkies, however, the main attraction will be jumping from the highest portion of the falls into the large blue pool for which it was named. To avoid slipping on the wet limestone rocks, water shoes are recommended.

Friendly guides escort guests between the different jumping points so it can all be accomplished safely.  A photographer will follow your party down the falls capturing each jump and burn the photos to a CD if you choose to purchase them.  If you’ve seen the cruise-themed Netflix movie, Like Father , there’s a prominent scene shot at The Blue Hole to give you an idea of just how beautiful it really is there.

Cool Runnings

cool runnings excursion ocho rios

The 1998 Winter Olympic Jamaican bobsled team didn’t only result in a movie about Jamaican bobsledding, it also spawned a bobsledding tourist attraction popular with fans of the movie worldwide.  Unfortunately, there’s no actual ice to sled on, but the concept is similar and still a blast to do.

Instead, the Cool Runnings Bobsleds in Ocho Rios ride on rails and are more like gravity powered roller coasters winding down a tropical Jamaican mountainside.  Riders control their own speed, so going fast or slow will be up to you.  Cool Runnings is one of several attractions at Rainforest Adventure’s Mystic Mountain.

Canopy Zip Line

The rush of zip lining through the forest canopy is another attraction available at Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios. The Canopy Zip Line excursion includes a scenic ride to the top via the Sky Lift, a 25-meter suspension bridge, 5 separate zip lines, and 6 platforms.  No walking to the beginning or end of the zip line is required.

The Sky Lift can be ridden in both up and down the mountain. Access to the Hummingbird Garden, Lookout Towers, Mystic Waterslide and infinity edge pool also on Mystic Mountain’s grounds are also included when booking the zip line attraction.  Food may be purchased at the restaurant on premises for those who choose to spend the day at Mystic Mountain.

Martha Brae River Rafting

Rafting on the Martha Brae is Jamaica’s version of gondolas in Venice.  One of the more romantic excursions available, guests will float down this calm and picturesque river on a 30-foot long rustic bamboo raft for approximately three miles.  The raft Captain uses a long bamboo pole to help guide the raft along informing passengers about Jamaica and this historic river.

The ride itself lasts approximately one hour, but bars, shops, and other facilities are available to enjoy both before and after the ride. Bring a swimsuit to take advantage of a swim in the river; however, staying completely dry is an option as well.

White River Tubing

Located near the Blue Hole, water adventure enthusiasts will have a fantastic time floating in tubes down the White River.  The journey is a nice combination of tranquil floating to take in the lush forest and tiny, yet exhilarating, little river rapids that both adults and children will enjoy.  Life jackets are provided but where the tubing takes place, the river is quite shallow.  Guides often walk along next to the tubes keeping them toward the center of the river.  River tubing along the White River is a good activity to combine with a trip to The Blue Hole due to their proximity.

Dolphin Cove

Swimming with dolphins is a bucket list activity that is available in many cruise ports. Dolphin Cove in Ocho Rios offers dolphin interactions that take place in a natural cove rather than an artificial pool.   A variety of different dolphin interaction experiences are available to choose from, as well an up close and personal shark encounter.  Family members who do not want to purchase an encounter are able to pay an entrance fee in order to accompany family on their adventure.  Entrance to Dolphin Cove includes beach access, a Jungle Trail walk, and snorkeling with stingrays.  Lunch is available on site for additional purchase.

Green Grotto Caves

Green Grotto Caves has a long and fascinating history.  Archaeological evidence shows the caves were first used by the Arawak Indians.  Since that time, the caves have severed a remarkable number of purposes.  They’ve been a hideout for Spaniards when the English invaded, a safe place for runaway slaves, hid arms being smuggled to Cuba, and as Government storage for rum barrels! But the most insane use?  A nightclub! Visitors on the Green Grotto Caves roughly 45-minute tour may recognize the underground lake Used in a scene from the James Bond movie, Live and Let Die as well as see what’s left from its nightclub days.  In case anyone in your party has a fear of them, you should know a lot of bats currently live inside the caves.  Wear comfortable shoes as there is a bit of walking on uneven surfaces.

Konoko Falls

There are a lot of rivers in and around Ocho Rios, hence the name, which translates to Eight Rivers.  Konoko Falls is another location where waterfall activities can be experienced, only without the huge crowds Dunn’s River Falls usually attracts.  As well as being able to climb Konoko Falls, the grounds contain a small zoo, museum, and botanical garden.  Guides will assist in climbing the falls and again, water shoes are highly recommended for additional safety.  Unlike the other waterfall options, food and drink are available for purchase at Konoko Falls making it a better location to spend the day rather than being a stop on the day’s itinerary.

Yaaman Adventure Park

A relatively new offering in Ocho Rios is Yaaman Adventure Park .  This attraction has a truly unusual mix of activities.  If you have ever wanted to go to Jamaica and ride a camel, here’s your chance!  Seriously, they have camels.  It’s not all camels, of course. Yaaman has ATVs, Segways, a jitney tour, an aviary, and a culinary experience.  For a really full day, packages that include all the activities, as well as lunch, are available, but a customizable package can be purchased instead.  This park is affiliated with nearby Dolphin Cove and may be combined with a dolphin encounter.

Fern Gully isn’t so much a specific attraction as it is a scenic drive.  Tour operators have long been driving along this route, resulting in its fame and transition into a must-see destination for tourists.  The winding road, deep in a canyon, was once a riverbed.  More than 100 years ago, an earthquake creating the gorge destroyed the riverbed. A road was later constructed at the bottom.  The sides of the gorge are dense with tropical growth, specifically, more than 500 species of ferns, giving it the name, Fern Gully.  The drive is roughly 3 miles and it is possible to walk it, but most just enjoy the beautiful drive.

Puerto Seco Beach Club

After receiving a $5 Million renovation the Puerto Seco Beach Club reopened in late 2018.  This beach club not only features a gorgeous white sand beach, but a 150-foot pool bathers can use as well.  Chairs, umbrellas, cabanas, and water toys, such as paddleboards and kayaks can be rented for a fee.  Kids and kids at heart can purchase access to the floating obstacle course.   There is a restaurant and bar on site serving up burgers, fish, and of course Jamaican Jerk chicken and pork.  The beach club has an affiliation with Dolphin Discovery Montego Bay , so it’s possible to combine a dolphin encounter and a day at Puerto Seco.

Bob Marley Tour

Don’t worry about a thing, cause every little thing, gonna be alright! Fans of Jamaican legend, Bob Marley, can tour what is being called the Graceland of Reggae.   The trip to Nine Mile is roughly a 90-minute ride from the cruise port across Jamaican countryside, passing through beautiful Fern Gully en route.  During a tour of Marley’s childhood home and mausoleum, guides will provide information and insights into the life of the man known as the King of Reggae.  You should know that the Rastafarian religion and culture involves marijuana.  Expect to see, and be exposed to, marijuana use during this tour.

Chukka Good Hope

Similar to Mystic Mountain, Chukka Good Hope is a privately owned multi-activity destination.  The Good Hope Estate itself is a historic plantation that may be toured during your visit. Additional attractions that have been added to the estate include ATVs, horseback riding, aviary, waterslide, pools, ropes course, and zip line.  A highlight of the pool area is a man-made waterfall.  A wide variety of package combinations enable guests to participate in the activities they desire, including some off-site activities such as The Blue Hole and White River tubing.  Some, but not all, packages offer a buffet lunch and open bar.

Horseback Ride Into The Sea

The only thing that might top a horseback ride through the thick tropical forest or along a white sandy beach would be riding your house into the sea itself.  The actual time spent on the horse in the water won’t be very long, but a ride through crystal clear blue waters is one of those quintessential Caribbean images that stay with you.  There will be plenty of entertaining ride time on land before or after the dip into the sea. Both beginners and more advanced riders can take part in one of these tours and there are several vendors offering this type of ride.  Jamaica Cruise Excursions and Chukka are two.

Shaw Park Gardens

For those who want to visit a waterfall and not get wet should consider Shaw Park Gardens.  This mountain botanical garden boasts over 600 species of tropical flowers and plants in its 25-acre space.  Hired guides can give guests a tour of the gardens, telling of the park’s history and of the lush vegetation there.  Shaw Park was originally a sugar plantation and then an orange grove before becoming the botanical garden it is today.  There’s no food or drink available for purchase within the park, but you can grab something on the way for a delightfully lazy picnic at the base of the falls.

Mahogany Beach

If you are looking for a beach bargain that is away from the port, Mahogany Beach is a free public beach just a short cab ride away.  The beach is well maintained with both sunny and shady spots to be had.  Lounge chairs can be rented for a small fee and a nearby restaurant serves food and both hard and soft beverages.   Mahogany Beach also has restrooms.  Because it is a public beach, vendors will be around trying to sell their wares to the tourists.  If annoyed by vendors, you should consider paying for entrance to a private beach area instead.

Bamboo Beach Club

cruise to jamaica pictures

Just a few miles from the cruise port is the Bamboo Beach Club .  A little piece of paradise surrounded by almond and palm trees, the Bamboo Beach Club is situated in a stunningly beautiful location.  Unique to this beach break excursion is that its lively Jamaican cultural experience.  Colorfully costumed dancers, drummers, singers, acrobats are present to perform throughout the day. Most cruise lines offer an excursion to the Bamboo Beach Club alone or as part of a larger package.  Excursion costs generally include a padded lounge chair, and unlimited food and drink, but check specific details for your cruise line.

Ocho Rios Bay Beach

Want to hit the beach and not stray too far from the ship?  Ocho Rios Bay Beach lies just to the East as you exit the cruise port.  A quick 15-minute walk and a $3pp entrance fee grants you access to this secure and serene little beach.  The water is calm and quite shallow making it an excellent stop for families with little non-swimmers. Since the cruise pier is to the East of the port, Ocho Rios Bay Beach is the perfect spot for photos of you or your family standing on the beach with the cruise ship majestically in the background.

James Bond Beach

Off the beaten path and approximately 10 miles East of Ocho Rios is the famous James Bond Beach.  The local town of Oracabessa was once the home of Ian Flemming, who is rumored to have written a number of his Bond novels while at this little beach.  It was also the location for the scene in the movie Dr. No when Ursala Andress emerges from the water in her white bikini to meet James Bond. There is some decent snorkeling that can be done from the shore near the rocks on the eastern side.  Entrance to this rustic beach is $5pp.

RIU All-Inclusive Resort Day Pass

If you are looking for a more luxurious beach day, an all-inclusive day pass to the Hotel RIU Ocho Rios is a good option.  A resort day pass allows you to use all of the resort amenities without paying for an actual room at the resort.  The RIU has two pools and a beautiful palm tree-studded beach where you can lounge in one of the hammocks.

Besides the lunch buffet and unlimited open bar, the all-inclusive pass includes the use of snorkel gear, kayaks, and paddleboards.  Beach towels are provided, so feel free to travel light and leave yours on the ship.

If looking for souvenirs, Blue Mountain Coffee, or unique Jamaican gifts, they are several options.  The easiest location will be at the port itself, but prices and selection may not be the best.  If out and about in the town of Ocho Rios, the Taj Mahal Shopping Center has Jamaican souvenirs, duty-free shopping, and a few restaurants.

Oddly, the building is also shaped somewhat like its namesake, the Taj Mahal.  Lastly, the Ocho Rios Craft Park is something like a swap meet with its market stalls and tents instead of permanent walls.  Be sure to haggle to get the best deals.  Vendors are known to be more aggressive in their sales tactics here, but that’s all a part of the Jamaican experience!

For an authentic Jamaican Jerk culinary treat, look no further than Scotchie’s .  Popular with tourists and locals alike, this alfresco restaurant is always busy.  The menu is simple and a la carte.  Jerk chicken, pork, and jerk chicken and pork sausages portions are ordered by weight.

Side orders consist of recognizable items like roasted corn, or rice and peas, but some you may have never heard of.  Festival may sound mysterious, but it’s just bread and it’s good!  And a Red Stripe beer goes well with the jerked meat after a day of adventure.  Scotchie’s does take credit cards but requires that you show ID.  Cash is preferable and US currency is fine.

Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere and at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville in Ocho Rios, you can have a cheeseburger in paradise.  Just a short walk from the cruise pier, you can hit up Margaritaville for not just tropical drinks and good food, but for fun in the sun as well.

The Ocho Rios location has a pool with swim-up bar and 60-foot waterslide.  If the beach is more your thing, they have that too with chairs, umbrellas, and water trampolines to use.  Yes, it is a bar, but during the day, kids are allowed in.  Best of all, entrance to Margaritaville is free, just purchase some food and drink.

Ocho Rios is a beautifully lush Caribbean port with a long, rich history and friendly locals.  No matter what you choose to do during your day ashore, Ocho Rios is sure to be a highlight of your cruise.

Additional Tips for Ocho Rios

  • Private Tour Guides

Gas is incredibly expensive in Jamaica so getting around isn’t cheap.  Arranging for a private guide or driver for the day is usually the most economical way to get around during your visit if you plan on doing independent excursions.  The larger your party, the better the rates will be as most drivers use vans or minibusses.

  • Start your day early

Jamaica has three cruise ports, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, and Falmouth. The most popular excursions get extremely busy, especially on days when there are a lot of ships visiting.  It will be a better experience when you schedule your visits to these spots as early in the day and arrive before the rest of the cruisers do.

Marijuana is NOT legal in Jamaica; however, citizens are allowed to grow a limited number of plants.  Possession of no more than 2 oz is a petty offense punishable with a small fine.  While in Jamaica for the day, it is very common to smell it being smoked or be approached with an offer to buy.   Possession of marijuana is prohibited on every cruise line. If caught, you could be charged with transporting drugs across international borders.

We hope you enjoyed this list of things to do in Ocho Rios , Jamaica while on a cruise.  Feel free to add your own activity to the list in case we missed one.  After all, we don’t want to miss out on any hidden gems this cruise port has to offer.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica Excursions

Spanish for "Eight Rivers"  Ocho Rios is a scenic and peaceful port located on the northern end of Jamaica. This Jamaican point of interest provides stunning views of the island's sandy white beaches and lush mountain forests along with tight-knit local communities.

If you're ready to enjoy some of the Caribbean's finest food, an incredible reggae music scene, beautiful seaside landscapes and the laid-back comfort of island life, then don't hesitate to take an Ocho Rios excursion during your Panama Canal cruise with Princess Cruises.

Dunn's River Falls

One of Jamaica's most beloved natural treasures, Dunn's River Falls is a stunning 600-foot waterfall located just outside of Ocho Rios. Even more amazing is that the Dunn's River is one of the only rivers that empties directly into the Caribbean Sea, making the waterfall an immensely popular destination for beach-goers visiting Jamaica.

You may also recognize the area around the Jamaican point of interest from the classic James Bond movie, Dr. No . The filmmakers were instantly drawn to the natural beauty of the region when searching for a Caribbean shooting destination. The waters around the falls were used in the movie's infamous scene of Bond girl Ursula Andress walking out of the sea.

Mystic Mountain

If you're interested in getting away from the shore to explore inland Jamaica, be sure to stop at Mystic Mountain. This 700-foot peak, located in the tropical forests surrounding Ocho Rios, is a tourist hotspot and features a range of family-friendly attractions and adventures.

Perhaps one of the most popular activities on Mystic Mountain is Rainforest Bobsled Jamaica, a 1,000 meter downhill ride on high-tech bobsleds that recall the historic Jamaican Olympic bobsled team. During an Ocho Rios excursion, you can also tear through the forest trees by zip-line, providing a bird's-eye view of the rainforest canopy while gliding between various treetop platforms. And if you're looking for an effortless way to tour the area, simply hop aboard the Sky Explorer chairlift ride.

Dolphin Encounter

Animal lovers who want a close-up hangout with some of Jamaica's friendliest sea creatures should experience Ocho Rios' Dolphin Encounter. Located at the shores of Dolphin Cove, this incredible opportunity will have you face-to-face with a bevy of cheerful bottlenose dolphins. You'll receive tips on dolphin-handling from an aquatic animal expert while also learning about training secrets and other fun facts about these ocean mammals. And if you're looking for a break from the bottlenoses for a second, you can feel free to check out Dolphin Cove's other exciting aquatic attractions and activities.

Ocho Rios excursions take you into the middle of a bubbly Caribbean destination with a variety of natural wonders, ocean-themed activities and Jamaican cultural staples for you and your whole family to enjoy! Learn about attractions like Dunn's River Fall, Dolphin Encounter, Mystic Mountain and other tropical destinations you'll encounter on a Panama Canal cruise from Princess Cruises. The City of the Eight Rivers

Ocho Rios means eight rivers in Spanish, and it is precisely its rivers, as well as its crystalline sea, that are its main characteristics; characteristics that will not disappoint visitors to Jamaica wishing to immerse themselves in the lush vegetation of these marvelous dream locations.

Just like a mirage, the white buildings of Ochos Rios seems to appear unexpectedly from lush vegetation covering the coast. On Main Street, you will be able to shop or pass your day on solid ground. However, during your cruise to Jamaica and Caribbean sea , we suggest you try the many outdoor activities offered on its rivers, such as kayaking and tubing. With an MSC excursion , you will be able to admire the Konoko Falls & Gardens : an explosion of tropical plant and animal life with different aromas emanating from sinuously shaped flowers and colorful parrots at every corner.  Another must-see attraction are the waterfalls along the Dunn River: almost 650 feet of natural steps over which the water flows to then fall about 200 feet directly into the sea. To enjoy this spectacle to the fullest, these enchanting waterfalls can be climbed via stairs set on either side. The beach below with its extremely fine, pure white sand is equally beautiful. The sea of Ochos Rios will also grant you the opportunity of a close encounter with a very popular sea mammal: the dolphin.

6 things I wish I knew before setting foot on a cruise ship that all first-time cruisers should keep in mind

  • I went on a cruise for the first time on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in April 2022.
  • After taking the trip, I think there are some things everyone should know before going on a cruise.
  • Here's what I learned about aspects as varied as how to pick a cabin and where to go for dinner.

Insider Today

Before I took my first cruise in April 2022, I had never even seen a cruise ship.

It was a seven-night voyage on one of the largest cruise ships in the world , Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas . We sailed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Roatán, Honduras ; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas .

While I had a good time, I ultimately decided the cruising lifestyle wasn't for me . But there were some things that would've made my trip a little easier and more comfortable. Here's what I think all first-time cruisers should know before setting sail.

Some cruise ship cabins can be rockier than others, like those situated at the front of the ship.

cruise to jamaica pictures

Before booking, I wish I'd researched how the location of a cabin can affect the amount of motion you feel while the ship is moving.

My ocean-view stateroom was at the front of the ship, and I didn't expect to feel as much movement in my cabin as I did. But I later learned that ships rock from side to side, so the front and back move more than the middle.

Several seasoned cruisers on the voyage told me that the front of the ship was one of the worst places to feel motion. Higher decks in the middle of the ship felt calmer and more stable.

If you are as prone to motion sickness as I am, I suggest choosing a room in the middle of the ship.

The restaurants included in the cruise rate had all different types of food and were high quality, so splurging on specialty restaurants wasn't necessary.

cruise to jamaica pictures

One of the most distinctive things about cruising is that most meals, snacks, and drinks are included in the cruise rate.

But on large ships like Wonder of the Seas, more than a dozen restaurants with specialty offerings, like sushi, are not included and incur additional charges, either a one-time fee or by the dish. I paid $40 to $60 for each meal.

I reserved all specialty restaurants before my trip, but I wish I hadn't booked so many once I realized the included restaurants offered a wide range of delicious food to eat.

There was more than one buffet, and the main dining room served a three-course meal with changing menu items each night.

These included options satisfied every craving. One of the best meals I had was in the main dining room.

Since I booked so many specialty restaurants, I didn't have time to try all the buffets or eat in the main dining room more than once. If I had known they'd be so satisfying, I would've saved money and eaten more of the included meals instead.

Formal nights weren't enforced, so don't waste luggage space on nice outfits if you don't want to participate.

cruise to jamaica pictures

I hate dressing formally, but I knew cruises required formal nights , so I brought one nice dress with me. After the first formal night, however, I learned that the dress code wasn't strictly enforced. I noticed people wore a variety of outfits, from evening gowns to T-shirts.

I relaxed my look on the other two formal nights, but the dress felt like a waste of the limited space in my suitcase. If I had known it wasn't necessary to wear, I would've left it at home.

Laundry on board was expensive, so bring a bar of laundry soap to save money.

cruise to jamaica pictures

Since I brought only a  carry-on suitcase , I was hoping to get some laundry done on board, but then I saw the pricing sheet .

I live in New York City, and most apartments I've rented haven't included in-unit laundry. So I'm used to paying for my clothes to be washed. But rather than pricing by weight like local New York laundromats, Royal Caribbean charges for each article of clothing. Each shirt costs $4, and a dress costs $9, while washing just one pair of underwear would be $2.

This would add up fast, I thought, so I didn't get any laundry done on my trip. If I had known the pricing before my trip, I would've brought a bar of laundry soap to hand-wash a few things.

Though it was a Caribbean cruise, I got chilly, so bring some warm clothing.

cruise to jamaica pictures

My favorite times to be on the top decks of the ship were early in the morning and late at night , when there weren't as many crowds. But during those times, there were cold, strong winds, which made me wish I'd brought more than one sweater and pair of pants.

I would've brought a few more pairs of pants and another sweater to keep me warm (instead of the poofy formal dress). Since I didn't, I ended up wearing the same pants and sweater nearly every morning and evening.

I would've brought my own case of water if I knew it was allowed.

cruise to jamaica pictures

To ensure I stayed hydrated throughout my trip, I opted for the water bottle package while booking trip extras like restaurant reservations and excursions. For $16, Royal Caribbean delivered a case of 24 water bottles to my cabin. It seemed expensive for a pack of water, but I thought this was just part of the price of cruising.

Then when I was boarding the ship, I noticed people carrying their own cases of water. That's when I realized that Royal Caribbean allows guests to bring their own nonalcoholic beverages as well as nonperishable snacks.

If I had known this, I would've brought my own water and a few snacks, too.

If I'd known these details before my cruise, I could've prepared to have a better time while saving some money. I hope they help other first-time cruisers.

cruise to jamaica pictures

While I enjoyed parts of my cruise, some of this knowledge could've made my trip much more comfortable. If I ever cruise meet other soon-to-be first-time cruisers, I'll remember what I learned about cabin locations, formal nights, and cool, windy mornings sailing in the Caribbean Sea.

As promised, here are the photos from our first day off the ship while on our  Carnival Cruise last month. We docked in Montego Bay , Jamaica early that morning, so when we woke up and looked out the windows, we could see land. This was exciting for us after being surrounded by water for the past 2 days and we could not wait to explore together and spend the day on the beach. The water was so insanely beautiful—clean, clear, warm, and the most beautiful aqua color. We spent the day with no real plans and just played on the beach for hours, swam in the ocean, collected seashells, and looked for blue crabs, which were all over the underside of the dock we were by. I’ll let the photos do the talking…

We ate lunch at a little beach cafe. We had jerk chicken, plantains, Jamaican rice and beans, frozen lemonade, and ice cream. Aubrey and I had ice-cold Red Stripe beer, which is brewed in Jamaica. So refreshing! Afterwards, we explored some nearby shops and people-watched before heading back to the ship. Birdie is obsessed with Pikachu and was so happy to find a Jamaican Pikachu stuffed toy, complete with Rastafarian hat and braids. Ha!

We were parched by the sun and exhausted after our day on the island. We loved Jamaica and took with us some really beautiful memories and photos that I am looking forward to blowing up and having printed to hang in our home. I’ll be back soon to share photos of our time in Mexico! Stay tuned.

This post was created for Away We Go with Carnival , the destination for getting in the getaway state of mind.

On the World’s Largest Cruise Ship, Thrills and Space to Chill

Our reporter joined thousands of passengers on the inaugural sailing of Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. Yes, the water rides were wild. But the most surprising thing she found? Some actual peace and quiet.

One man got down on his knees and kissed the rug emblazoned with the ship’s logo. Another lifted his wife and swung her around, ecstatic to be among the roughly 5,000 passengers to embark on the inaugural sailing of the world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas.

For months, the 250,800-ton ship, which can carry nearly 8,000 people, has been making headlines — including some that have criticized its size and potential to damage the environment . But the passengers who plunked down $1,800 to $100,000 and boarded the ship at Port Miami in Florida on Jan. 27, said nothing could have prepared them for the vessel’s sheer scale.

“It’s stunning,” said Christina Carvalho, a 43-year-old accountant from Oakland, Calif., as she stood on the ship’s Royal Promenade, gaping up at “The Pearl,” a gigantic kinetic art installation. “It feels even bigger than I expected.”

While Royal Caribbean has packed the ship with amenities to craft “the ultimate family vacation,” the company’s design team has tried to defy negative stereotypes like crowded decks and long lines. Instead of steel walls, the interior is open and airy, with floor-to-ceiling windows to bring passengers closer to the water and make the central thoroughfare feel less like a shopping mall.

cruise to jamaica pictures

“Over the years our customers told us that despite being on the ocean, they did not feel connected to it, so with Icon we wanted to bring water everywhere,” said Jennifer Goswami, the director of product development at Royal Caribbean International.

I was on board the Icon of the Seas for five days of its seven-night inaugural sailing to the eastern Caribbean. Here are some of my takeaways:

Passengers board a ship, taking photos with their cellphones.

Embarkation

Embarkation starts through Royal Caribbean’s app. After some glitches, it took me 10 minutes to scan identification documents, fill out a health form and pick a time slot for boarding.

On the day of the sailing, I headed to Port Miami expecting chaos, but as I got out of the taxi, I was greeted by a porter who took my bag and ushered me to the terminal. I scanned my app, showed my passport and went through security in less than 10 minutes. I lingered, waiting to see if others had as smooth an experience as I did, but there was just a steady flow of passengers ascending the gangway.

The ship has the feel of a city, with eight distinct “neighborhoods.” My favorite, Central Park, was filled with more than 33,000 plants; it was the perfect place to stroll or read on a bench. The Royal Promenade, with karaoke and a piano bar, could get crowded and noisy at peak times.

The seven swimming pools are designed for different vibes and demographics: The Hideaway is an adults-only infinity pool, with D.J. sets and cocktails; another adult pool has an adjacent children’s splash pool. Empty lounge chairs were plentiful for sunbathers across the ship.

On our first sea day, I was so surprised by the relative absence of crowds that I walked the ship trying to find them. But with so many venues, including 40 restaurants, bars and entertainment spaces, passengers were constantly moving around.

Seeking a quiet space one afternoon, I found the Aquadome , a tranquil lounging area with wraparound windows. Fellow passengers napped there.

Entertainment and activities

From a sunrise surf simulator lesson to late-night dancing in the nightclub, the ship seems to offer something for everyone, most of it free. The water park with six slides was a big draw. One ride, the Crown’s Edge, is not complimentary: Starting at $49, it tosses you (in a harness) above the sea, leaving you dangling.

There is a fitness center, jogging track, a basketball and soccer court, a putt-putt course, pickleball, rock climbing and dancing. A wellness center and spa offers treatments for an additional cost. All can be reserved on the app; for popular attractions like the Crown’s Edge it’s helpful to book ahead because places fill up fast.

For nightly entertainment, “Aqua Action” was a standout, with aquatic entertainers performing under a 55-foot waterfall, as was the comedy club.

cruise to jamaica pictures

Not surprisingly, some passengers felt overprogrammed. “There’s almost too much to do,” said Nancy Carter, 54, a nurse from Brighton, England. “It’s hard to plan your day and even when you are busy doing something, you feel like you are missing out on something else.”

At the Surfside neighborhood, there are pools and restaurants for both adults and children so that families can spend time together. For parents wanting alone time, the Adventure Ocean child-care facility has play areas and programs for ages 6 months to 12 years that is included in the fare.

There’s a social center for teenagers, too, with games and music. “It’s a great place to meet new people and make friends,” said Madison Foxx, 14, from Morrisville, N.C. Her mother, Ashley, a 38-year-old federal prosecutor, said the ship kept her two children entertained and allowed her both alone time and quality family time.

“I can relax and the kids are happy and busy all day," she said. “Then we have many special moments together.”

One of the biggest surprises was the array of dining choices.

The Windjammer Cafe and the main dining room were the busiest all-inclusive options. My daily go-to was the Aquadome food hall, with crepes made-to-order and a Greek food stand. Another favorite of mine was Pier 7, a restaurant in Surfside that served raw-tuna Buddha bowls, mango-lime shrimp tostadas and other dishes.

cruise to jamaica pictures

Meals at specialty restaurants, such as Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen and Hooked Seafood, come at an additional cost, or are included in some food and beverages packages that range from $9.99 to $115 per day. Reservations are recommended.

The Empire Supper Club offers an eight-course meal paired with cocktails. At $200, the tasting menu included Wagyu rib-eye, rabbit and sea bass topped with parsnip and red beets.

Cabin prices — which recently increased, because of high demand — range from $2,699 per person for an interior cabin to over $100,000 for a three-story townhouse with an indoor slide and backyard. Some family accommodations have connecting rooms and large terraces.

Though only 204 square feet, my ocean balcony room did not feel cramped thanks to minimalist design and the views.

Environment

Royal Caribbean says it set a new standard for sustainability with this ship, installing advanced water-treatment and waste systems, among other features. But some environmental groups say that building a vessel this size is not compatible with the cruise industry’s long-term sustainability goals.

On board, I saw staff sorting through the trash to take out misplaced items to recycle, and single-use plastic appeared to be minimal; passengers were given reusable cups at drinking stations.

That the water slides remained on, even after they were closed to passengers, caught me by surprise. It seemed like an unnecessary waste of energy. (Royal Caribbean did not respond to a request for comment.)

Passengers I spoke to did not seem too concerned about the ship’s potential to harm the environment, with some arguing that land and air travel are not climate-friendly either.

Our seven-night itinerary started with two days at sea. The first stop was on Day 4 at Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts and Nevis. Excursions ranged from a hike up Mount Liamuiga to a food-and-rum tour, with prices from $39 to $249. I chose a sailing and snorkeling excursion ($155) and enjoyed the secluded bay, but the beach was crowded and touristy.

Video player loading

An anticipated excursion for Ms. Foxx, the federal prosecutor, and others was Coco Cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. When I asked about her visit — I called later, having to disembark before the excursion — Ms. Foxx said her children loved the slides and snorkeling.

And would she sail on the Icon of the Seas again?

“Yes, but I might wait a bit,” she replied. “I want everyone to get a chance to try it out.”

7 of the best road trips in Jamaica

It's no secret that Jamaica   excels at white sand beaches and sensual, apricot-colored sunsets. What travelers often overlook is the island's road-trip appeal.

Whether you’re after mountain views, a ride along the coast or a cruise through quaint neighborhoods, the largest English-speaking island in the Caribbean   can be slowly and comfortably traversed by car within a week. Here are our favorite driving routes in Jamaica.

1. Falmouth

Best historical road trip Montego Bay–Falmouth, Trelawny; 34km (21 miles)

For the history buff, a trip to Falmouth is a must. A quick 45-minute drive from Jamaica’s second city  Montego Bay   will take you to one of the best-preserved Georgian towns in the Caribbean, with a paved two-way highway covering much of the journey.

Despite its age, much of Falmouth’s 18th-century Georgian architecture remains intact. Drive through the historic town along Market St, stop by St Peter’s Anglican Church , and visit the former post office, a stunning yellow building from 1832.

Detour : On the outskirts of Falmouth is Glistening Waters (known locally as Luminous Lagoon), home to bright bioluminescent life that lights up the water in a cool neon blue. Drive there and book a night tour to experience one of the rarest and most magical water phenomena.

Distant view of two people taking a selfie on Negril Beach while others swim in the water

2. Negril sand and sunset trip

Best romantic road trip Montego Bay–Negril; 80km (50 miles)

With four miles of white sand beach  (yes, despite the name) and sensual sunsets, Negril   is the romantic getaway road trip. Located about an hour-and-a-half drive from Montego Bay, the roads are smooth and well-maintained due to the town's popularity with  tourists .

Yet, Negril still maintains a laid-back charm with lush tree-lined streets, local restaurants and independent boutique hotels.  Continue to the West End community for stellar limestone cliffs, and watch daredevils dive off the cliffs into the clear blue Caribbean Sea.

Next, drive to the most western end of Jamaica to visit the bright-white Negril Lighthouse, built in 1894.

There are great sunset views from both the cliffs and the lighthouse, and Negril is often touted as one of the best places in the world to watch the sun go down.

Arrive early on the multi-layered cliffs at  Rick’s Cafe  – one of the top spots to watch the sunset – because it can get crowded very quickly.

Detour: Visit Barney's Flower & Hummingbird Garden to see an abundance of exotic plants and flowers. The garden is also home to the unique Jamaican swallowtail hummingbird.

3. South Coast Treasure Beach

Best off-the-beaten-path trip Kingston–Treasure Beach; 138km (86 miles)

Travel along the rugged southern coast of Jamaica from the bustling capital city of Kingston to the eco-friendly beach town of Treasure Beach . This trip takes you through many small communities and across five parishes.

Unlike the north coast, the roads are less developed with potholes of various sizes – some large enough to swallow a small vehicle – so drive with caution.

Make a pit stop in Mandeville, which has cooler temperatures and some 18th-century Georgian architecture. Check out its historic courthouse too.

Cross over to another parish and continue to Lover’s Leap  restaurant in St Elizabeth, which at a dizzying 518m (1700ft) up, offers splendid panoramic views of Jamaica. The elevated spot is also an ode to Jamaican folklore about star-crossed lovers who jumped the cliffs to escape their enslaver.

Carry on down to Treasure Beach, a relaxing haven situated right on Jamaica’s southern coastline that's known for its farm-to-table culture and tight-knit community.

Although it’s located beachside, be careful of the waves at Treasure Beach because there are many rip tides. Heed all “no swimming” signs and advice even if the water seems shallow.

Have a cooldown at YS Falls , one of Jamaica’s top natural attractions about an hour north of Treasure Beach. The seven-tiered waterfall flows into natural swimming pools surrounded by lush vegetation and towering trees.

Planning tip : Plan your trip to align with the annual turtle-hatching season (most hatch from August through October) to watch hawkbill sea turtles return to the sea in droves.

Three multi-coloured boats tied against a tree in Jamaica's Port Antonio bob in a blue lagoon

4. Ocho Rios to Port Antonio

Best road trip for beach views Ocho Rios – Port Antonio; 102km (63 miles)

This trip prioritizes the beach, taking you along the coastline from touristic  Ocho Rios to unspoiled Port Antonio. Leave the tourist bustle of Ocho Rios in your rearview mirror and continue east along the gently meandering road that hugs the oceanside.

Take the A3 road and drive through St Mary Parish, then connect to the A4 road that will lead you towards Annotto Bay and finally Port Antonio .

This is one of the more languid drives in Jamaica. The road is paved but has a few potholes, and it passes along small seaside communities and slowly slopes through the panoramic hills of St Mary.

As you drive through the quiet village of Oracabessa, be on the lookout for the famous Goldeneye Hotel – once the home of author Ian Fleming and the birthplace of his most famous character, James Bond.

The journey descends into Port Maria, welcoming banana fields and a short spurt through the mountains inland before returning to the seaside at the A4 road exit.

The A4 road from St Mary takes you straight to Port Antonio in Portland parish, meandering along the northeast coastline. Pass through Annotto Bay and Buff Bay, the first major towns you’ll meet in Portland, and continue east.

You’ll arrive at Port Antonio, Jamaica’s friendly, unspoiled, gorgeous seaside. Have a meal at the marina and sip on Jamaican Red Stripe beer while listening to the lapping waves at Trident Castle .

Detour : Goldeneye is exquisite, but Firefly touts the best view in all of Jamaica. Take a stop at this national heritage site, which English playwright Noel Coward used to call home. Firefly’s sprawling views across the Spanish Main and the old pirate look-out is a breathtaking pause worth every minute.

5. Papine to Newcastle

Best road trip for scenic delights Papine, Kingston–Newcastle; 23km (14 miles)

This enriching one-hour drive to Newcastle glides through the UNESCO-listed  Blue and John Crow Mountains   but is often overlooked by both locals and visitors.  Once a British Army military hill station, Newcastle is now a training facility for the Jamaica Defense Force.

To get there, take the route from Kingston to Papine and onwards to the sleepy but charming village of Irish Town, before continuing along the main road.

Along the route, pause to take pictures of the mesmerizing ridgelines or try some iconic Blue Mountain coffee, such as at Cafe Blue or Mavis Bank Coffee . This trip is a fantastic way to spend the day.

Though you may depart Paine in light, summer clothing, Newcastle is often chilly and misty, so be sure to bring a jacket.

Detour: Pack your lunch and visit Holywell National Park for a picnic in the Blue Mountains. The park is located en route to Newcastle and offers generous views of Jamaica’s landscape. There are cabins to rent if you want to stay over, and you can go on a guided hike to a waterfall.

Traveling as a family? Here are some of the best things to do with kids in Jamaica

Motor cars travelling through a tunnel of lush green bamboo plants at Holland Bamboo in Lacovia, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica

6. Treasure Beach to Negril

Best road trip for rugged landscapes Treasure Beach–Negril; 99km (61.5 miles)

The beauty of this road trip is that it explores some of Jamaica’s most untouched landscapes. Vegetation flourishes here, where the sights and sounds of fauna in their natural habitat coincide peacefully with the local community.

Spot crocodiles in the Black River and drive through the picturesque Bamboo Avenue – a 4km (2.5-mile) stretch of bamboo canopy forming an elegant arch on both sides of the road.

Bamboo Avenue is pockmarked with a few potholes. Be careful when driving, as the shade from the bamboo causes the potholes to look like shadows. Stop by the Border community to eat fried fish from roadside stalls along your way.

From Border, continue to Bluefields, a small community in Westmoreland parish with one of the best public beaches you can find.  The next major town is Savanna-la-Mar, known locally as “Sav” or “Sav-la-mar,” where you can replenish and stock up on personal items. Sav, the capital and main commerce town in Westmoreland, has excellent infrastructure for renting vehicles, finding mechanics, banking, etc.

Detour:  About 20km from Treasure Beach, you'll pass  Parottee Bay. From here, book a boat ride to Floyd’s Pelican Bar ,  a rustic and charming bar on stilts in the middle of the Caribbean sea that sells the freshest seafood. If you’re lucky, you might spot a dolphin or two on your way.

7. Buff Bay

Best off-road trip Kingston–Buff Bay, Portland; 64km (40 miles)

Buff Bay is located in the parish of Portland on the northeast side of the island, known for its high vegetation and rainfall. If you like off-roading, then this is the road trip for you. Driving from Kingston to Buff Bay offers a breathtaking experience through the winding mountain roads of Jamaica.

There is a relatively clear route that’s almost a singular road.  However, the roads are rough, and corners are sharp and winding, making it difficult to see oncoming traffic; drive slowly and carefully.

While you can certainly use a normal car, it’s best to take a 4WD to navigate the bumpy unpaved roads that cut through the Blue Mountains , Jamaica’s highest mountain range .

Before you arrive at Buff Bay, stop by Newcastle to admire dreamy, misty views of the famed peaks. Continue east along the Portland coastline if you fancy soaking up rays on some of Jamaica’s most pristine beaches .

Local tip: The best time to take this trip is during the dry season. The area experiences landslides during the rainy season and roads can sometimes get blocked.

Tips for driving in Jamaica:

  • Always drive on the left.
  • Jamaica has a compulsory seatbelt law.
  • Speed limits range from 50km/h (30mph) to 80km/h (50mph) and vary from place to place across the island.
  • Carry ID and all relevant car-rental paperwork at all times, since police may pull you over.
  • You can expect any road with the designation "A" to be in fairly good condition. "B" roads are generally much narrower and often badly potholed but still passable in the average rental car. Many B roads are not shown on maps.
  • Minor roads, particularly those in the Blue Mountains and Cockpit Country, can be tough going. If you plan to drive off the major routes, it’s essential to have a stalwart 4WD.
  • Signage on main roads is good, but directional signs are few and far between as soon as you leave them.
  • On B roads, what may appear on a map to be a 30-minute journey may take several hours.
  • More often than not, there are no signs to indicate sharp curves, steep ascents or work in progress.
  • Road are often poorly lit at night, if at all.
  • Jamaica has some of the world’s most dangerously aggressive drivers. Cars race through towns, play chicken with one another and cut across the opposite lane on blind corners. Use extreme caution and drive defensively, especially at night when you should be prepared to meet oncoming cars that are either without lights or blinding you with high beams.
  • Use your horn liberally, especially when approaching blind corners, and watch out for pedestrians and livestock.
