'I tried washing up liquid from Fairy Liquid, Sainsburys, Aldi and an eco-friendly alternative and one was shockingly great'

I tried out some of the UK's leading washing up liquids and one didn't quite match up

You know a washing up liquid is good at its job when it cleans all the grease and grime off your plates.

I don’t look for much more than this when shopping for it.

Personally I usually go for the largest volume for the smallest price because I want my money to go far, so I don’t buy it often.

In fact, the one liquid I currently use has lasted five months so far, and there’s still a long way to go.

I shouldn’t be surprised, after all Fairy Liquid is the UK’s best selling washing up liquid.

But how would it fare against Sainsbury’s Original, Aldi’s Magnum, and Ecover’s Sensitive alternatives?

All coming in at slightly different price points, would this affect the quality of the product?

I put them to the test.

Fairy Platinum Quickwash Original

As you can tell by the name, this product is designed for a speedy and convenient use - which is why it’s my go-to buy.

It usually sells for £2.50 for just over one litre of liquid, which puts it at the top end of our price spectrum for this test.

But this product has lasted for five months and I haven’t nearly finished it yet, so if I have to pay a one off £2.50 to last me over six months, I’ll happily oblige.

Fairy Liquid isn’t as “sud-sy” as I expected, but bubbles don’t necessarily indicate how clean a plate, or bowl in this case, can get.

Doing it like Ronseal, “Exactly what it says on the tin,” Fairy Liquid hasn’t let me down and cleaned my bowl within an instant.

Sainsbury’s Original

For 55p you can buy a 450ml bottle of Sainsbury’s own brand washing up liquid.

The only reason I don’t tend to buy these size bottles is because I want my washing up liquid to last, which in turn means I won’t have to fork out every month for a new one.

The first thing I noticed about Sainsbury’s competitor was the fact the liquid itself was almost too runny.

I know it’s a liquid, but it seemed to lack the viscosity the other contenders had.

I questioned whether this would mean the washing up liquid wasn’t going to be tough enough to clean thoroughly.

After all, the objective here was to clean my saucepan, not move the dirt around it!?

It was slippery but became sud-sy very quickly, so it was good to know it wasn’t just greyn-dyed water inside the bottle.

Much like Fairy Liquid, Sainsbury’s did an adequate job of cleaning my saucepan upon inspection.

But the runny-ness of the washing up liquid would put me off buying it again.

Aldi’s Magnum Washing Up Liquid, Lemon

I decided to spice things up with Aldi’s contenders, opting for a lemon-scented version.

The sweet smell was just a little bit of added extra.

Aldi’s washing up liquid was the cheapest by far at 42p for 500ml - so already you’re getting more for your money in comparison to Sainsbury’s.

I expected Aldi to be very similar to Sainsbury’s, but was surprised upon pouring it that this washing up liquid was nowhere near as runny. For which I was thankful for.

It foamed up nicely as I scrubbed my bowl, which indicated it was doing its job.

Aldi definitely scrubbed up well, faring much better than its supermarket rival.

Ecover’s Sensitive Washing Up Liquid, Lemon & Aloe Vera

Now if you want a fancy scent for your washing up liquid so you can leave your bowls fresher than fresher, Ecover delivered.

A 450ml bottle will cost you £1.25 in Sainsbury’s, which is 55p cheaper than on Ecover’s website.

This washing up liquid was by far the foamiest of them all, creating cloud-like suds easily in my bowl.

Ecover’s message is they try to make the world cleaner than clean, which I am totally behind.

They clean, plant-based, biodegradable ingredients.

Their bottle is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic and is cruelty free.

Ecover is a great option to have in the supermarket at such a reasonable price because it will make these types of products more accessible for customers.

All in all, it did a pretty good job, much like the others at cleaning my crockery.

The suds were just a bit of a bonus.

Crockery cleaned and drying on the shelf, I’d happily pick up any of Fairy Liquid, Aldi or Ecover’s washing up liquid again.

Sainsbury’s needs to work on their formula, the more body the better.
