Primary Care

Pain management, palliative care.

At Mobile Physician Services, our customized care teams provide patients with both comfort and familiarity as they work with a dedicated primary care provider and care coordinator to improve their health. Our physicians and staff take a proactive approach to preventive care, chronic disease management, and chronic illness support right where you live.

Each home visit includes an in-depth examination and individualized treatment plan, which is monitored and adjusted through routine follow-up visits. The primary care provider will deliver your ongoing care and will recommend to you specialty services as needed.

  • Annual Wellness visits : This wellness visit allows your primary care provider to create or update your personalized prevention plan. This visit includes a review of your medical and social history related to your health and may include counseling about preventive services. This plan may help you to prevent or reduce the chances of future illness based on your current health and risk factors.
  • New Illness Exams : When a new symptom or ailment arises, call us. Early indications of not feeling well could be a clue that you may be getting sick. A symptom in one part of the body may also be a sign of a problem in another part of the body. Moreover, unrelated symptoms that might seem minor on their own, could be warning signs of a more serious medical disease or condition. The new illness exam can be very brief or more detailed depending on your concerns and the provider’s findings.
  • Follow-up Care: Involves a regular medical checkup, which may include a physical exam and laboratory testing. Follow-up care checks are a proactive way of assessing the potential for and preventing health problems from returning after treatment of a disease has ended or an illness has seemingly passed.
  • Referral for Specialty Care : Referrals are the link between primary and specialty care. The referral coordination includes the documentation of patient care activities, the transfer of information, the inter-provider communication itself, and the integration of care services to the patient. Mobile Physician Services is a multi-specialty practice so many of these specialty referral services can be made seamlessly with little inconvenience or disruption to the patient and caregivers regular routines.
  • Medication Management: Medication management is a treatment structure that ensures our patients are receiving optimal therapeutic results from their prescription medications, both in the short and long term. Our team’s goal is to mitigate medication noncompliance and monitor all prescriptions treatments so that drug interactions complement one another for the most optimal outcome for our patients.

The provider may be a physician, advanced practice nurse or a physician assistant. A dedicated care coordinator will also be assigned for each patient to help arrange comprehensive services and assist patients and their caregivers.

  • Online Patient Portal: You and your designated caregiver, if you choose, will be able to connect with your provider through a convenient, safe and secure environment which allows access to your health records and a way to communicate with our staff in a timely manner.
  • Telephone Assistance : On call providers are available 24/7 weekdays and weekends.

Our psychiatry team specializes in the diagnosis and management of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. They carefully evaluate each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan to improve the patient’s overall mental and physical well-being.

  • Depression : Depression is a common and often serious medical illness that negatively affects how you may feel, the way you may think, and how you may act. Depression can cause feelings of sadness, despair and hopelessness, which may lead to a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed.
  • Anxiety : Intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday common situations. The worry or anxiety could make you feel fatigued, irritable, and interfere with your regular sleep habits.
  • Dementia : An overall term that is used to describes a collection of symptoms related to an individual’s decline in memory or other thinking skills. It may be severe enough to diminish a person’s ability to perform everyday common activities. The effects of dementia can negatively influence your memory, thinking and social abilities.
  • Phobias : A phobia is when you experience excessive panicking or an irrational fear reaction to a situation. If you have a phobia, you may experience a deep sense of dread or fright when you encounter the source of your fear. The fear may be a certain place, situation, object, animal or even another person.
  • Behavioral disorders : Attention deficit, hyperactivity, bipolar, learning, defiant or conduct disorders are all examples of complaints that may have a detrimental impact on a person’s interpersonal relationships with family, friends, and co-workers.

Our wound care specialists have been trained in the attention and treatment of all types of acute and chronic wounds. They have skill and experience in wound debridement and wound care procedures – managing chronic, non-healing wounds and infections, with a demonstrated care that fosters healing… right in the patient’s own home.

We specialize in serving homebound patients who may also be bed-bound or have difficulty in walking or moving around. As a result, immobility compression sores develop at pressure points on the body when the weight of an immobilized individual rests continuously on a firm surface, such as a mattress or wheel chair. Often these same patients are on oxygen or have high-risk medical conditions which makes it an even more challenging and stressful effort for them to travel to a doctor’s office for an appointment. Thus, the necessity for in home care and treatment.

Wounds that benefit from specialized wound care techniques include:

  • Diabetic foot wounds and ulcers
  • Post-surgical wounds
  • Traumatic wounds caused by injury
  • Arterial and vein stasis caused by lack of circulation
  • Immobility pressure sores. (Bed sores from stillness)

Podiatry

We know it’s not always easy to leave home to get the care you need for your eyes. Our optometrists bring state-of-the-art diagnostic eye equipment and technology to your home – making it much easier for you to get the vision care you need.

During a visit, your doctor will exam each eye for signs of serious issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and detached retinas, among other conditions.

Receiving regular eye exams regardless of the state of your vision can help detect serious eye problems at their earliest stages ─ when they are most treatable. During an eye exam, your doctor will observe and evaluate the health and condition of the blood vessels in your retina, which can be good indicators of the health of your blood vessels throughout the rest of your body.

  • Comprehensive eye exams : This exam goes beyond a simple vision screening. A comprehensive eye exam includes a host of tests in order to do a complete evaluation of the health of your eyes and your vision.
  • Annual retina exams : A retinal exam allows your doctor to evaluate the back of your eye, including the retina, the optic disk and the underlying layer of blood vessels that supply the retina.
  • Eyeglass fittings : A prescription works best when your eyeglasses are properly fitted. Improper fitting may cause pinching, distorted vision, headaches, and even dizziness. Our doctors will make sure your prescription lenses and frames are working together for you.
  • Diabetic eye exams : Diabetes does not have to lead to vision loss. Taking an active role in managing your diabetes can go a long way in curbing later complications. Regular eye exams, good management of your blood sugar and blood pressure, along with early intervention for vision problems can help prevent vision loss caused by diabetic retinopathy. Retinopathy is caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye.
  • Refractions: This test is given as part of your routine eye examination. It is often referred to as a vision test. This test assists your eye doctor in measuring you for the exact lens prescription you will need.
  • Eye injuries: Eye trauma could be the result of a sudden blow to the eye. It may cause the eye to suddenly compress and retract which could cause damage to your eye and the surrounding tissue. Even if the injury may seem minor, all eye injuries should be furthered examined by a doctor for possible more serious and underlying injuries.
  • Eye infections: The most common eye infection is conjunctivitis, also known as pink-eye. An eye infection can happen in almost any part of your eye, including your eye lid, cornea and optic nerve. Symptoms of eye infections may include redness, itching, swelling, discharge, pain, or problems with vision. Always consult with your doctor before treating, as recommended actions are contingent on the cause of the infection.
  • Low-vision exams: A low vision exam is different from a normal eye exam. This functional-vision assessment determines how specific visual impairments affects your ability to perform everyday activities. The exam’s results assist your doctor in prescribing management tools and medications to better enhance and manage your remaining vision.

Palliative care is an approach to the holistic care of patients, including family and caregivers, to improve the quality of their lives after the diagnosis of a chronic debilitating disease or life-limiting illness that may cause a host of complaints.

Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and continue to be offered while the patient is continuing active treatment through different phases of their life limiting condition. Palliative care is for any patient with a chronic illness who is experiencing a decreased quality of life because of symptoms related to their illness or treatment, like renal dialysis, oxygen therapy or chemotherapy. The care is provided by a specially-trained team of doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other specialists who work together to provide an extra layer of support to the patient and their caregivers.

Palliative care can help in symptom control including not only pain, but nausea, weakness, shortness of breath, fatigue and weight loss at any time during their diseases, not only at the end of life.

How to Safely Get Started With Home Visit Podiatry Services

December 30, 2022.

When I started my private practice in 2018, I had no interest in leaving the office. The most efficient way to generate revenue for podiatry was staying in the office. All the staff, equipment, protocols, expenses and even insurance reimbursements were tied into the office.

I had kept getting calls requesting home visits because patients were bed bound or just didn’t want to leave their home. Many podiatrists in my area don’t offer palliative foot care at all, so I had the opportunity to fill this need. Plus, I had opted out of insurance and became a Direct Care practice, which meant I had the freedom to offer services without insurance regulations, including home visits.

There was no longer a need to file for a new location of service with insurance or wait on an approval for reimbursement. I would just inform the patient of my fees, show up and get paid immediately. The first time I did a home visit and got paid what I wanted without friction, it felt unusually liberating. I felt incredibly valued, something that had been missing under the insurance regime.

In one visit, I saw a patient who was on hospice care but you wouldn’t know it from meeting this gentleman. He was vibrant, jolly, and easy to chat with. He needed foot care for his sensitive feet and I was able to provide this service. He lived just minutes from my office so it was just a stop on the way home. A few weeks later his wife reached out to me asking about changes in his feet. I was able to do a video consultation immediately, coordinate care with his hospice team and prescribed antibiotics for the new infection he had developed.

And that was it. A straightforward evaluation and a quick resolution to a new problem, all in the comfort of their home. The family was grateful and I was deeply satisfied at how easy it was to deliver medical care to someone who would otherwise have difficulties leaving their home to see the doctor.

When I was contracted with insurance companies, doing home visits was never on the radar. I was way too busy in the office to consider it and I was bombarded with all the ever changing rules, insulted by the low reimbursement rates, or risking no payment at all that it didn’t make sense to offer it. Plus, I didn’t really know what it would be like to visit a person’s home as a doctor, so the unknown made me a little fearful. But now I have a protocol to mitigate those fears and I want to be able to share that with other Direct Care doctors who might be interested in offering home visits. This is really old school medicine, and just like vintage goods, should come back into vogue to rekindle the patient-physician relationship.

How to safely get started with home visit services

  • Offer an initial consultation by video so you can learn about what their needs are. You can learn quite a bit through video that you might miss on a phone call. Since everyone has a smartphone these days, the barrier to access is much lower. This initial assessment also gives you insight to their home setting and to the tools you might need to bring to the visit.
  • Map out their address to see if it is a feasible drive that doesn’t disrupt your work flow too much. If it is out of range, then it’s ok to decline home visits. There will be more opportunities to help.
  • As a safety feature, your iPhone has a Share My Location button that you can turn on and let a trusted person know you’re on the road and when to expect you back. That way you’re accounted for.
  • Consider digital intake forms and have a credit card on file before the visit so that you have less paperwork to deal with and focus on the patient.
  • Before you leave, clean up after yourself, like used gloves and any trash so it’s not left behind. After all, you’re still a guest in someone’s home.
  • If you love it and want to expand home visit, give patients and their family a meaningful visit leaving cards and asking for referrals.

Of course, include your malpractice carrier in the conversation about doing home visits to ensure your liability coverage. With  advances in technology, and the physicians’ deep desire to disconnect from corporate medicine and reconnect with patients, home visits are an option to expand our services to those who need it most.

The staff at Anywhere Foot and Ankle Care were caring, thoughtful and professional. Registration was easy and I was able to schedule and appointment that fit our schedule. Dr. Demian was exceptional at accommodating my mother’s severe hearing loss and explained everything he was doing as he went through her treatment. He provided excellent after care instructions and made suggestions for other services that may help my mom. My mom was eternally grateful and we couldn’t be happier with the services she was provided.

Benefits and Considerations for In-Home Physical Therapy

  • What Is It?
  • How Do You Get It?

Who Can Benefit From It?

  • What If I Don't Qualify?
  • Is It Effective?

If you have a problem that results in pain or loss of functional mobility , you may benefit from the skilled services of a physical therapist . Your therapy will be focused on helping you restore normal mobility so you can get back to the things you enjoy.

Physical therapy care may be provided in a variety of different settings. Obviously, if you are hospitalized, your therapy may be provided by a physical therapist who works at the hospital . If you require sports therapy, you may go to an outpatient PT clinic.

Some patients have difficulty leaving the house to go to physical therapy. These people may still enjoy the benefits of physical therapy in their home. A physical therapist may come to their house to work with them to restore normal functional mobility.

So what is in-home physical therapy, who how might you benefit from PT in your home?

What Is Home-Care PT?

Home-care physical therapy occurs when a physical therapist comes to your home to provide rehabilitation services. This type of service is reserved for patients who are unable to leave the house to attend PT. This can occur for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Your condition is acute or severe and leaving the home presents a health risk
  • Your functional mobility is limited and you cannot travel to therapy
  • You lack adequate transportation or access to transportation to get to your physical therapy
  • You simply desire a private PT session in your home

Most physical therapy services in the United States are covered by insurance, and certain rules apply to home-care physical therapy to be covered by your insurance carrier.

For most insurance plans, physical therapy in your home will be a covered service if you are able to demonstrate significant barriers to you leaving the house. These barriers may be due to your injury or illness or due to your inability to travel.

If you choose to have PT at home just because it is convenient for you, your insurance company may not cover the service and you will have to pay for the therapy yourself.

How Do You Get In-Home PT?

If you suffer an injury or illness that limits your ability to move around normally, you may benefit from PT. And if you cannot leave the house, home-care physical therapy may be the best option.

Most patients who receive home-care physical therapy are referred to the service by their healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider can make the referral to a local visiting nurse service that offers physical therapy, and he or she can attest that home services are medically necessary. This medical necessity report will likely also state that home-care physical therapy is needed because you are unable to leave the house due to your condition or circumstances.

If you feel you may benefit from physical therapy at home, you can also call your local physical therapy clinic or visiting nurse association. Those organizations can help you navigate the pathway to receiving home-care PT.

So how do you know if you can benefit from home-care physical therapy? In general, if you have any problem that results in a loss of functional mobility, you may benefit from working with a physical therapist. And if you are having difficulty leaving the house, a PT can come to your home. Conditions that may require home-care physical therapy may include:

  • Post-surgical conditions like a total hip or total knee replacement
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • After a cardiac event like a heart attack
  • After trauma such as fracture

If you have a problem that keeps you from moving normally and if it is burdensome to leave your home for therapy treatment, you may benefit from having your rehab in your home.

What If I Don't Qualify?

Sometimes, patients want to have home-care physical therapy, but their insurance company denies coverage. This may happen if your insurance company determines that your condition does not warrant in-home physical therapy. It may also occur if you have not proven that you are unable to leave your home or if leaving your home for PT presents a significant burden.

If home-care services are denied, you may have a right to appeal. Call your insurance company and ask about an appeals process. You may also wish to call your healthcare provider's office to explain your situation. Your healthcare provider may be able to help you navigate the appeals process.

If you do not qualify for home-care PT, you can attend physical therapy at a local outpatient clinic. Of course, you will have to travel to the clinic for treatment. Your outpatient physical therapist should be able to provide you with home exercises to do in order to limit your trips to their facility for rehab.

You may also wish to simply pay a private home-care physical therapist to come to your house for therapy if you do not qualify for services. However, this option may be financially burdensome.

Is In-Home PT Effective?

Many people wonder if home-care physical therapy is effective. Why? Because many believe that you need expensive, heavy equipment and exercise tools to engage in an effective rehab program. This is not necessarily true. Your home-care physical therapist is trained to utilize available resources to maximize your rehab experience. He or she can also bring light equipment to your home to ensure you get the most out of your physical therapy.

A 2016 study published in the journal Orthopaedic Nursing examined the functional outcome of patients after total knee replacement surgery. Some of the patients in the study had home-care physical therapy followed by outpatient PT, while other patients attended outpatient PT only. The authors of the study found no difference between the two groups when looking at function and range of motion (ROM) measurements. Having PT at home after knee replacement did not provide significant benefit, but it also did not contribute to a negative outcome.

Another small study found that patients who suffered upper extremity hemiparesis and weakness after a stroke had an improved outcome and satisfaction with outcome after receiving in-home therapy services. This study only included six patients, so it is not considered very powerful. Still, it indicates that there may be a positive benefit to home-care physical therapy.

While having home physical therapy, you will hopefully get better. As your condition improves, your functional mobility may improve, and you may be able to start leaving the home regularly. If this happens, your home-care physical therapist may discontinue in-home services. At that time, you may continue your rehab in an outpatient PT facility.

A Word From Verywell

Working with a physical therapist after illness, injury, or surgery can help you recover full functional mobility. This can allow you to return to your normal work and recreational activities. Sometimes, your injury or your personal circumstances may prevent you from safely leaving your home to attend physical therapy. If this is the case, you may benefit from home-care physical therapy. Working hard at home with your PT can help you have a positive outcome to regain maximal functional mobility.

Top 10 Tips for Maintaining Healthy Feet: A Podiatrist's Guide

home visits by the functional foot company

Foot health might not be the first thing you think about when considering your overall well-being, but it shouldn't be the last either. Your feet are the foundation of your mobility and participate in taking thousands of steps each day.

Consequently, they deserve a proper care routine to keep you walking comfortably and to prevent potential issues down the line. Let’s dive into the top 10 tips for impeccable foot health, with advice backed by expert podiatrists.

Top 10 Tips for Impeccable Foot Health

Below are the top 10 golden tips, curated from years of podiatric experience, to ensure your feet remain healthy and strong.

1. Daily Inspection and Hygiene

Daily Inspection and Hygiene

Our feet should a example of good foot hygiene, these incredible pillars of support and mobility, are often the most neglected part of our body. They carry the weight of our world, literally!

From navigating us through bustling city streets to relaxed strolls on the beach, they take on varied terrains, pressures, and challenges every single day. Just pause for a moment and think about the last time you truly looked at your feet, not for their aesthetic appeal, but for their well-being.

Engaging in daily practice good foot hygiene inspections isn't about being over-cautious; it's akin to reading a diary of all the day's adventures your feet embarked upon. Those tiny blisters might tell a story of a new pair to wear shoes; a small abrasion might recount an unexpected hike or a hurried walk to catch a bus.

And while these stories are fascinating, some can have long-term implications, especially if you have conditions like diabetes. A seemingly harmless cut or bruise, in such cases, can be a prologue to a complicated chapter of infections or more significant issues.

Yet, the beauty of this daily ritual is its simplicity. It doesn’t require fancy tools or specialized knowledge. Just you, your feet sweat, and a few dedicated minutes. It's an intimate moment where you connect with a part of yourself that's often overshadowed by the face or the hands. This moment becomes your first line of defense, your early warning system, alerting you to potential foot problems before they amplify.

2. Exercise Your Feet

 Exercise Your Feet

When we think of exercise, feet might not be the focal point. However, they should be. A range of foot-specific exercises can strengthen the muscles, enhance blood circulation, and improve overall flexibility.

Regular foot exercises can not only alleviate common foot aches but also provide added stability and balance. Incorporating simple routines, such as toe stretches or ankle rolls, can lead to significant benefits in the long run.

Simple Exercises with Profound Benefits

  • Toe Stretches : Great for elongating tightened muscles, promoting flexibility, and relieving day-to-day stress.
  • Ankle Rolls : Enhances the range of motion in the ankle joint, ensuring fluid movement and reduced stiffness.
  • Marble Pick-ups : A fun yet effective exercise to enhance toe dexterity and muscle strength.

3. Clean Your Feet Daily

Clean Your Feet Daily

In our daily hustle and bustle, it's easy to forget the heavy lifting our feet do – figuratively and literally. Just like our faces that are exposed to the environment, our feet are prone to encountering a vast array of external contaminants. Their contact with the ground, shoes, and socks makes them vulnerable to an array of issues, making daily cleaning paramount.

The Daily Foot-Cleansing Ritual

  • Washing with Care : Utilizing a mild soap ensures that your feet are cleaned without stripping them of essential natural oils. Warm water aids in removing accumulated grime effectively without causing temperature shock to the skin.
  • The Importance of Drying : While washing is half the battle, drying is equally crucial. Moist nooks, especially between the toes, can become hotspots for fungal growth. A gentle pat dry, using a soft towel, ensuring special attention between the toes, is vital.

4. Moisturize the Skin: The Secret to Supple and Maintain Healthy Feet

Moisturize the Skin

While the skin on our faces garners most of our attention, the skin on our feet tend, though thicker and more resilient, requires its own tender loving care.

Withstanding the daily grind, our feet are subjected to friction, pressure, and sometimes harsh conditions. As a result, they are often left dry, rough, or even cracked. Enter the world of moisturizing – a simple yet transformative act that can revolutionize foot health.

The Art of Moisturizing

  • Choosing the Right Product : Not all moisturizers are created equal. For the feet, it's beneficial to opt for thicker creams or ointments that offer deep hydration. Ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and glycerin can work wonders.
  • Regular Application : Make moisturizing a nightly ritual. Post your evening shower or before bedtime, generously apply the moisturizer, giving extra attention to areas prone to dryness like the heels.
  • Wearing Socks : After moisturizing, wearing breathable cotton socks can amplify the hydration process. They help lock in the moisture, ensuring that the cream gets absorbed effectively.

Avoiding Overhydration

While moisturizing is vital, it's essential to avoid overhydration, especially between the toes. Excess moisture in these areas can be a breeding ground for fungal infections. Hence, post-wash, always ensure these regions are dried thoroughly before applying any cream.

5. Choose the Right Fitted Shoes

Choose the Right Fitted Shoes

Footwear isn't just about aesthetics. The right pair can make the difference between good and compromised foot health.

Shoes that are too tight, lack arch support, or are worn out can lead to a plethora of foot issues, including corns, calluses, and structural problems. Always invest in good quality, well-fitted shoes, and remember, your foot size can change over the years, so periodic measurement is crucial.

6. Trim Nails Properly

Nail care is a vital component of foot health. Improper nail trimming techniques can result in painful conditions like ingrown toenails. It's advisable to trim the nails straight across, avoiding digging deep into the corners. Furthermore, using sanitized tools and ensuring they're sharp can aid in achieving a clean cut, reducing the risk of infections.

7. Keep Blood Sugar Under Control

Elevated blood sugar levels can have adverse effects on your feet, primarily through the development of peripheral neuropathy—a condition where one loses sensation in their feet. This numbness can mask cuts or blisters, leading to undetected and untreated wounds.

Therefore, maintaining blood sugar within recommended levels is imperative. Feet regularly check-ups and following prescribed treatments are pivotal for those with diabetes.

8. Avoid Going Barefoot in Public Places

Avoid Going Barefoot in Public Places

Public places, such as gyms, pools, and communal showers, are often laden with bacteria and fungi. Avoid walking barefoot in these areas significantly increases the risk of contracting foot odor infections. Always using protective footwear like flip-flops or athletic shoes can act as a protective barrier, ensuring your feet remain healthy and infection-free.

Don't Ignore Foot Pain

Pain in the feet is more than just discomfort; it's a sign that something might be amiss. Whether it's due to overexertion, inappropriate footwear, or an underlying medical condition, it's crucial not to dismiss or normalize the pain. By seeking timely consultation from a podiatrist, you not only address the immediate discomfort but also potentially prevent more severe complications. Remember, healthy feet are foundational to our daily life; never take them for granted.

9. Don't Ignore Foot Pain: Heed the Warnings of Your Foundation

Pain, in its many forms, serves as the body's built-in alarm system. It signals when something is amiss, urging us to take action. This axiom holds especially true for our feet. Given their foundational role in our mobility and balance, any discomfort or pain in the feet deserves immediate attention.

Yet, all too often, many dismiss foot pain as a mere consequence of a long day or ill-fitting shoes. However, this oversight can lead to prolonged issues and potential complications.

The Different Facets of Foot Pain

  • Transient vs. Persistent : While transient pain — the kind that appears after a long walk or run and fades away with rest — might not be a significant concern, persistent pain, which lingers or reoccurs frequently, is a red flag. It's indicative of an underlying issue that requires intervention.
  • Localized vs. Generalized : Pain that's localized to a particular area, like the heel pain or ball of the foot, can point towards specific conditions like plantar fasciitis or bunions. On the other hand, generalized pain or discomfort might suggest issues like flat feet or systemic conditions such as arthritis.

Potential Causes and Implications

  • Overuse and Injury : Pushing past one's physical limits, sudden increases in activity, or trauma can lead to strains, sprains, or fractures.
  • Biomechanical Issues : Flat feet, high arches, or an abnormal gait can contribute to pain over time if not addressed.
  • Systemic Conditions : Diseases like diabetes, gout, or peripheral artery disease can manifest symptoms in the feet.
  • Footwear Issues : Regularly wearing high heels, shoes without arch support, or ill-fitting footwear can result in persistent discomfort.

Addressing Foot Pain: Proactive Steps

  • Immediate Response : At the onset of pain, consider RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) as an initial response.
  • Seek Expert Advice : Websites like Modern Foot & Ankle offer resources and consultation options for those experiencing foot discomfort.
  • Re-evaluate Footwear : Invest in supportive and well-fitted running shoes. Consider orthotics if recommended.
  • Stay Informed : Understand your feet, their structure, and potential vulnerabilities. Education is a potent tool in prevention.

Common Questions

1. Why is foot health important?

Foot health is pivotal as our feet bear the weight of our entire body and are crucial for mobility. Ignoring foot health can lead to pain, discomfort, and more severe complications that might affect posture, gait, and overall well-being.

2. How often should I replace my shoes?

The general recommendation is to replace shoes every 300-500 miles for runners or when they start showing significant wear, which can be around 6-12 months for daily wear shoes. However, this can vary based on activity level, shoe quality, and individual foot structure.

3. Is walking barefoot beneficial for my feet?

Walking barefoot, especially on natural surfaces like grass or sand, can help strengthen the muscles of the feet. However, it's essential to ensure the area is free from harmful objects or debris. Always be cautious about walking barefoot in public areas due to the risk of fungal infections.

4. What are common signs that I should visit a podiatrist?

Persistent foot or ankle pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, a change in foot shape, discolored toenails, and any signs of infection are cues to see a podiatrist. It's better to seek early intervention than to wait for issues to escalate.

5. Can I prevent foot problems with routine care?

Yes, many foot problems can be prevented or minimized with routine care. This includes proper foot hygiene, wearing well-fitted shoes, regularly checking feet for abnormalities, and seeking timely advice from a podiatrist when issues arise. Regular foot exercises can also help in maintaining foot strength and flexibility.

Foot & Ankle Care

Senior foot & ankle care.

The foot and ankle provide the most crucial support, but they are often overlooked until problems arise.

For many seniors, foot problems and ankle pain are common afflictions. Symptoms may present independently, or they can stem from other conditions, such as arthritis, hypertension, and diabetes.

In House Senior Services provides comprehensive, personalized podiatry services to seniors of all mobility levels. We respect every patient’s medical history and care preferences.

By choosing INHSS for your facility,  you can provide seniors with attentive on-site podiatry care, whenever they need it.

Preventative Foot Care

Keeping seniors’ feet healthy is part of preventative care alongside symptom management. As seniors age, they may develop natural changes to their feet that require ongoing care.

Some of the preventative care services we provide treat common feet affiliations, such as:

  • Pain in the ball of the foot
  • Ingrown nails
  • Shoe and insert fittings and suggestions

Treatment for Peripheral Artery Disease

Peripheral artery disease affects 1 in 10 of all adults over 65, yet it remains highly undiagnosed and untreated.

We collaborate with Minneapolis Vascular Physicians to offer rapid diagnosis and treatment for this common yet largely unknown condition.

PAD affects 12 million people in the United States, though as many as 50% remain without treatment and are at risk of amputation.

Our physicians know how to spot the early warning signs of the disease and provide swift interventions to lower patient risk, decrease symptoms, and prevent complications.

Management for Ongoing Foot Problems

There is a broad range of problems that seniors can experience with their feet in old age. We have crafted our podiatry services to cover all the major issues seniors are likely to face, as well as any they may go on to experience as their health changes.

Treatment services from our podiatrists include:

  • Debridement of mycotic and dystrophic toenails
  • Callouses, corns, and ingrown toenail removal
  • Ulcerations, abscesses, and subungual hematomas treatment
  • Foot and tissue infection treatments
  • Lower limb amputation prevention plans
  • Nail care up to 5 times per year based on necessity per Medicare guidelines

Every patient’s unique needs and circumstances are taken into account as we coordinate the right foot care plan. We also collaborate with other members of their care team to ensure they get the holistic, detailed care they deserve.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects nearly 30% of America’s senior population, and many people are unaware just how much this disease impacts foot health.

Diabetics are at a much higher risk of lower limb amputation due to peripheral artery disease and nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy).

Podiatrists play a large role in a patient’s diabetic care. They can help manage the symptoms of both PAD and diabetic neuropathy, as well as manage pain and prevent ulcers and skin conditions.

Custom diabetic shoes and inserts that provide protection and prevention can be ordered by the podiatrist and delivered on-site for a proper fitting.

We also offer off-loading durable medical equipment (such as wheelchairs and walkers) that are covered under Medicare Part B.

“We had the podiatrist at Madonna Summit for the second time and again were so pleased! The residents talk about him for days after he has been there.”
