A look at Team India's form, top performances, key talking points ahead of T20 WC

N ew Delhi [India], May 29 (ANI): Despite the talks around strike rate and lack of great pace bowling options, Team India is heading into the ICC T20 World Cup starting from June 1 with the most series wins and fine performances under their belt.

India will start their T20 World Cup campaign on June 5 against Ireland at the newly constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Here is a look at Men in Blue's form and statistics, since their T20 WC semifinal loss to England by 10 wickets in November 2022, ahead of the campaign:

-India tour of New Zealand (2022)

India won the rain-effected three-match T20I series under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya by 1-0, with the highlight being a knock of 111* in 51 balls by Suryakumar Yadav in the second T20I and four-wicket hauls by Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj in the third rain-affected T20I.

-Sri Lanka tour of India (January 2023)

India won this three-match T20I series by 2-1 to kickstart the home season with a bang. The highlight of this series was once again, a knock of 112* in 51 balls by Suryakumar in the third T20I and some fine all-round performances by Axar Patel.

-New Zealand tour of India (January-February 2023)

Yet another fine series win for India by 2-1, coming back after being 1-0 down in the series. The highlight of this series was a fine 126* in 63 balls by Shubman Gill, the batters' first T20I century in the third T20I and a fine show by Indian pacers that skittled NZ out for just 66 in pursuit of 235 run target set after Gill's ton, including Hardik Pandya's four-wicket-haul.

-India tour of West Indies (July-August 2023)

This is the only blip in India's T20I resume after the T20 WC. After securing the Test and ODI series, India was expected to win the T20I series as well, with a young Team India around. However, West Indies players fought really well in what was a tight, back-and-forth series to win it 3-2, winning the fifth and decider T20I match.

A major taking point of this series was the emergence of Tilak Varma, who batted with maturity and elegance beyond his age, top scoring for India with 173 runs in five matches at an average of 57.67, with a half-century.

-India tour of Ireland (August 2023)

This series served as pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's comeback to the national side after battling injuries and he was appointed as a captain of a young Indian side in the absence of Hardik Pandya. India won the series 2-0. This series saw the international debut of India's newest finisher and sensation, Rinku Singh.

-Asian Games Hangzhou (September 2023)

India secured a gold medal at the event, winning the gold on the basis of their seeding as their final with Afghanistan did not go further due to rain. A 49-ball century by Yashasvi Jaiswal was the big highlight from the competition.

-Australia tour of India (November-December 2023)

The series was conducted after India's loss to Australia in the World Cup finals, with both teams fielding a young side, with the main squads being rested after the tournament. India won the series 4-1, with some fine performances from youngsters like Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, skipper Suryakumar Yadav etc. Gaikwad was the top run-scorer for India, with 223 runs in five matches with a century and fifty. Spinners Ravi Bishnoi (9 wickets) and Axar Patel (6 wickets) also delivered some fine performances.

-India tour of South Africa (December 2023)

Team India travelled to South Africa under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. The series ended with a 1-1 draw as one match could not be played due to rain. A fine 68 by Rinku Singh in the first T20I and a fourth T20I century by Surya in the second T20I along with a five-wicket haul from Kuldeep Yadav were major highlights, performance-wise.

-Afghanistan tour of India (January 2023)

Afghanistan's first international series against India marked the return of veterans Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma to the T20Is after the team's loss in the 2022 WC semis. India won the series 3-0. The highlights of the series were twin half-centuries from Shivam Dube, a scorching fifth T20I century by Rohit, a knock of 121* in 69 balls, with 11 fours and eight sixes in the final game, some stunning fielding by Virat and a cameo of 29 in 16 balls that displayed his new, attacking attitude.

Some talking points for India heading into the tournament:

-Red-hot form of Virat Kohli (741 runs in 15 games), Jasprit Bumrah (20 wickets in 13 matches) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the rise in former's strike rate and six-hitting being a big highlight.

-Poor form of all-rounder Hardik Pandya (216 runs and 11 wickets in 14 games) in the IPL and diminishing of his finishing/six-hitting abilities

-Skipper Rohit Sharma's (417 runs in 14 games) disappointing strike rate of just 127.84 against spin in IPL 2024 and six dismissals in the tournament. He also had a very inconsistent run in the tournament.

-Bowlers like Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh (19 wickets each), and Mohammed Siraj (15 wickets) are among the wickets in IPL 2024, delivering some fine performances but are prone to inconsistency and erratic line and lengths.

-Absence of a proper, consistent finisher in Rinku Singh in the squad of 15.

Top performers for India during this phase:

Suryakumar Yadav: 857 runs in 20 matches and 19 innings at an average of 53.56 and a strike rate of 161.39, with three centuries and five fifties, best score of 112*.

Yashasvi Jaiswal: In 17 T20Is for India, Jaiswal scored 502 runs in 16 innings at an average of 33.46 and a strike rate of 161.93, with a century and four half-centuries. His best score was 100.

Arshdeep Singh: Leading wicket-taker for India, with 33 wickets in 25 matches at an average of 23.09 and an economy rate of 9.10, with a best of 4/37.

Kuldeep Yadav: 15 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 14.33 and an economy rate of 13.50, with a best of 5/17.

Rinku Singh: 356 runs in 15 matches and 11 innings at an average of 89.00 and a strike rate of 176.24, with two half-centuries and best score of 69*.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj

Reserves: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan. (ANI)

EXCLUSIVE: Mark Taylor punches hole in Aussies' spin plan for Test tour of India

Zachary Gates

Mark Taylor suspects Ashton Agar is Australia's most preferred spinner behind Nathan Lyon and says the left-arm tweaker's performance in this year's Sydney Test does not bode well for the tour of India.

Spinners Agar, Lyon, Mitchell Swepson and Todd Murphy were all named in an 18-man squad for the Australians' visit to India , on which they'll play four Tests across February and March.

Taylor was surprised ahead of the SCG Test that Australia's selectors shunned the leg spin of Swepson in favour of the left-arm orthodox of Agar , whose match figures of 0-58 from 22 overs reinforced his doubt.

The former national captain believes Swepson should be second in the pecking order behind Lyon as Australia pursues its first Test series victory in India since 2004.

"Looking at what happened in Sydney, it looks to me like Ashton Agar has the inside running for the first Test, but he didn't demand re-selection by the way he bowled in Sydney," Taylor told Wide World of Sports.

"He didn't look as threatening as Nathan Lyon did.

"If they put out their usual spin-friendly pitch, ideally it would be great to have Cameron Green at six, so then you could pick two seamers — probably (Josh) Hazlewood, (Pat) Cummins, or (Mitchell) Starc, Cummins — with two spinners. That would be Australia's best all-round attack given normal conditions over there.

"But they might put out a pitch that's absolutely falling apart. If that's the case, they may even look at playing three spinners. But bare in mind you've got (Steve) Smith and (Marnus) Labuschagne who can bowl a few leggies, and I wouldn't write off them bowling in the series, as well, along with Travis Head."

Mark Taylor has raised concern with how Australia's Test tour of India appears to be shaping up after the announcement of an 18-man squad.  Mark Kolbe/Getty Images

Swepson has four Tests to his name, all of which he played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka last year.

"I would have liked to see Mitch Swepson play in the Sydney Test. I thought he was our No.2 spinner behind Nathan Lyon," Taylor added.

"But the fact that they didn't play him suggests to me that they want to play a finger spinner who's going to bowl more at the stumps, rather than a side spinner.

"So, I would have liked to see Ashton Agar show us more control than he did (in Sydney). He didn't bowl that consistently and I didn't think the South Africans had a lot of trouble playing him, which is disappointing."

Being a leg-spinner selected for a Test tour of India almost certainly means Swepson is aware of the struggles encountered by Shane Warne in the Asian country.

Even the greatest leg-spinner the world has produced only managed 34 wickets at 43.11 from nine Tests in India.

Taylor, who skippered Warne's first Test tour of India in 1998, says Swepson "certainly can" do damage.

But he cautioned the 29-year-old Queenslander about his line.

"The problem with Mitch Swepson is if he bowls at off stump spinning it away, I don't think he'll trouble the Indians that much," Taylor said.

"The bowlers that seem to do the best over there are generally finger spinners, who bowl at the stumps and get wickets lbw and bowled, bring all the modes of dismissal into play.

"Even some of the great leg-spinners, like (former Indian maestro) Anil Kumble ... he wasn't a big side spinner; he was an over-the-top leg-spinner who spun it a little bit. He bowled at the stumps, got a lot of batsmen out lbw and (caught at) bat-pad, because batsmen are having to play every ball.

"The problem with guys who bowl side spin over there is the pitches are slow and there's not a lot of bounce. They're less effective."

The series, set to be played in Nagpur, Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmedabad, will get underway on February 9.

The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and India promises to be a thrilling contest. To prepare for this marquee Test series, Cricket Australia (CA) has announced a two-match series featuring Australia A and India A. This crucial warm-up series will take place in October and November, providing valuable opportunities for players on the fringes of both national teams to stake their claim for a spot in the main squad.

Fringe Players Get a Chance to Shine

The Australia A vs India A series will be a four-day affair, with the first match scheduled for October 31-November 3 at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay. The second match will be held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from November 7 to 10. This series offers a platform for players who haven’t yet cemented their place in the Test team to showcase their skills and impress the selectors.

Following the A team series, the entire Indian contingent, including both the main Test squad and the A team members, will participate in an internal practice match at the WACA in Perth from November 15 to 17. This internal game will allow the team management to assess player combinations and finalise their strategy ahead of the opening Test at Optus Stadium in Perth, which starts on November 22.

Scheduling Considerations for Australia

The scheduling of the Australia A matches presents some logistical challenges for the selectors. These matches coincide with Australia’s white-ball series against Pakistan, raising questions about potential player availability. The selectors will need to determine if any players involved in the ODIs or T20Is could potentially feature in the A team fixtures. Additionally, the A team series clashes with some Sheffield Shield matches, which are the premier domestic first-class competition in Australia.

With Steven Smith likely to retain his position as an opener, the make-up of Australia’s batting order remains a talking point. The A-team matches could be a golden opportunity for batsmen like Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, and Matt Renshaw to push their claims for Test selection. Their performances in this series could significantly influence the final batting line-up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Historical Precedent and Women’s Tour

This format of using an A-team series as a warm-up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy isn’t entirely new. Last year, Pakistan faced a Prime Minister’s XI, essentially an Australia A team, before their Test series against Australia. Similarly, in 2020-21, India’s tour of Australia also featured two warm-up matches against Australia A preceding the Test series, in which India emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline.

Looking beyond the men’s competition, the Indian women’s cricket team will also be touring Australia in early December. Their three-ODI series will be played around the time of the second Test between the men’s teams in Adelaide.

The upcoming Australia A vs India A series promises to be an exciting prelude to the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This A-team clash will provide valuable insights into the form and strategies of both teams, making it a must-watch event for cricket fans worldwide.

India A to play two four-day games against Aus A in lead-up to Border-Gavaskar series

The two matches will take place at Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay from October 31-November 3 followed by the MCG from November 7 to 10.

A two-match four-day series between India A and Australia A will precede the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year to give players on the fringes of both sides a chance to press their claims for the gruelling five-Test rubber between the two cricketing giants. Cricket Australia have also confirmed that both these games will be granted first-class status.

“Hosting those A matches at the upgraded Great Barrier Reef Arena and the MCG give these ‘A’ matches significant status and will provide great opportunities to players from both sides to put up their hand for selection,” Peter Roach, CA Head of Cricket Operations and Scheduling said.

The entire Indian squad – comprising both the main tour party and the A team – will then have an internal warm-up fixture at the WACA between November 15 and 17 ahead of the opening Test at Optus Stadium in Perth which begins on November 22.

Prior to the tour Down Under, India will play five home Tests with two matches scheduled against Bangladesh and three against New Zealand on the FTP from late September to early November.

Meanwhile, from Australia’s perspective, the two FC matches against the visitors will give them a chance at zeroing in their squad. The A matches could be a chance for the likes of Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris and Matt Renshaw to push their claims for the opening slot although there are indications that Steve Smith might fill in the spot vacated by retired David Warner.

Australia have already lost the last two series at home to India and will be aiming to reverse their fortunes this time around.

Some of Australia’s Test regulars could feature in this series by skipping the Pakistan ODIs and T20Is with the dates clashing. The T20Is against Pakistan are unlikely to feature any of Australia’s Test players given their proximity to the India series.

MCG to host Australia-India in blockbuster 'A' series

28ausa-16x9

India A to face Australia A in two first-class matches, with India also playing an intra-squad match, prior to this summer's Border-Gavaskar series

Australia's Test hopefuls are set to duke it out with their aspiring India rivals with the MCG to play host to one of the most anticipated warm-up fixtures of the summer.

Cricket Australia has today confirmed details of a two-match Australia A v India A series, as well as a three-day Indian intra-squad clash, to kick off the subcontinent nation's tour Down Under for the 2024-25 summer.

As well as giving the next generation of Australian and Indian stars a chance to showcase their talents, the three red-ball matches will also provide members of India's touring senior side an ideal preparation as they chase their third consecutive series victory on Aussie soil.

Mackay will host an Australia A fixture for the second consecutive year with the opening four-day 'A' series clash to be played at Great Barrier Reef Arena from October 31 to November 3.

The North Queensland venue will also host Australia's women's team in September as they tune up for the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh with two T20 internationals against New Zealand.

The two men's 'A' sides will then shift to Melbourne for the second match of the series from November 7-10, which will also give the Indian touring party a glimpse of conditions they may face at the iconic venue in the fourth Test six weeks later, where they won both Tests during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 tours.

The MCG last played host to Australia A in 2020 when they were beaten by England Lions in a day-night match.

28ausa-mcg-1x1

CA confirmed both 'A' series matches would have first-class status, as has been the case in their past three series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

The internal India squad match will then take place at the WACA Ground – which also hosted India in warm-up fixtures prior to the 2022 T20 World Cup – from November 15-17, giving touring players a final chance to push to selection ahead of the NRMA Insurance Border-Gavaskar series opener at Perth Stadium beginning on November 22.

While unusual, an intra-squad match on an away tour is not unprecedented, with Australia taking the same approach ahead of the 2019 Ashes when a Haddin XII faced off against a Hick XII at Southampton.

The Border-Gavaskar series will be the first contested over five Tests between the two nations (currently the first and second ranked Test teams) in more than 30 years, with Australia having not held the trophy since 2017 after losing the past four series 2-1.

28mcsweeney-1x1

"To have that running simultaneously with the women's ODIs and preceded by two significant Australia A v India A matches will be terrific for our fans," said Peter Roach, CA Head of Cricket Operations and Scheduling.

"Hosting those A matches at the upgraded Great Barrier Reef Arena and the MCG give these 'A' matches significant status and will provide great opportunities to players from both sides to put up their hand for selection."

Tickets for Australia's international summer of cricket, including the five Border-Gavaskar Tests and three women's CommBank ODIs, also against India, go on sale June 14.
