UPDATE REGARDING AUTOGRAPHS AND FAN-MAIL POSTAL ADDRESS
Autograph and selfie requests
I must ask you to avoid in-person autograph and selfie requests at all concerts for the foreseeable future. Due to the ongoing and still worsening Covid pandemic realities, I really have to stay in my social “bubble” with the band and crew and reduce contact with anyone else while we are on tour, as well as for a week or two either side of tours and concerts. This to to reduce the risk of any of us becoming infected and then having to cancel upcoming shows as a result. Great to see you, as always, but it is not yet the time for up-close scribbles, hugs and selfies.
Correspondence and fan mail
UPDATE: Due to the increasing backlog of postal autograph requests from fans and the renewed level of my touring and promotional activity, I am unable to undertake to do further signings. We ask you to cease sending photos, letters, album covers etc for the foreseeable future. Any such unsolicited material sent to the previous, or any other address will, regretfully, not be returned and therefore lost to you. At some time in the future, if and when I can resume additional office work, I will let you know.
Thanks for your understanding. Ian Anderson.

The Gloucester Magnificat by John O’Hara was commissioned by the Friends of Gloucester Cathedral in 2016. Adrian Partington conducted the five choirs of the cathedral with Jonathan Hope on organ and Nia Llewelyn Jones leading the junior choir. The world première was 8th July 2017. Adrian and John recorded the full concert in the historic cathedral early in 2018 and this disc is available from the Gloucester Cathedral shop.
CHARITABLE CAUSES
POPULATION MATTERS
In 1971, I wrote and recorded the song “Locomotive Breath” for the Aqualung album. The lyrical subject matter was the topic of runaway population growth.
Now, 47 years later, you have the chance to add your voice to the single most pressing problem facing future generations. From increases in global population, all other danger factors threatening our species, including climate change, continue to accrue. Apart from the odd rogue asteroid or black hole, of course.
In my lifetime alone, the population of the planet has slightly more than tripled. Yes - in one generation!
I have been a supporter of Population Matters for some years - ever since the venerable and much-loved David Attenborough became visibly the first person of real media presence to come out, unafraid to discuss the issues of population growth in our times.
Tricky and controversial stuff, I know, but don’t think that we concerned voices are about to shout down your right to have children. We are about the sense of responsible family planning and size. Responsibility not just to a nation, ethnic group or continent, but to the precious resource and life-giving spirit of planet Earth itself. No one is about to tell you what to do or not to do; merely to learn, understand and act upon your own conclusions. Responsible, informed choice. Especially for women in the modern world.
In this troubled world, human rights and especially women’ rights deserve our attention. In Israel, many citizens, whether Jewish or Arab need advice and representation, especially in these times when recently-passed laws have created the new Jewish homeland Nation-State Of Israel reducing the 20% of Arab citizens and their language to a minority status and favouring Jewish Israelis over all. Hardly conducive to a long-term solution of Palestinian and Israeli interests.
Not much we can do from afar, perhaps, but please show support for this NGO striving to find a better, more representative and fairer future for all people of the region.
(Shatil and Polyphony are recipients of all net income from Ian Anderson’s Israel concerts.)

The Polyphony Foundation
I have worked recently with Polyphony to raise funds through my recent concerts to support this valuable and very worthy cause. Polyphony brings together young students of Classical Music from within the very different cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds of Israeli Jews and Arabs.
Showing cooperation and team spirit between communities in this way through both artistic endeavour and cultural mutual respect surely has to be a great example to young and old – whether in Israel or far-flung diasporas.
If you wish to help encourage this non-political, not-for-profit organisation please read all about their work at http://polyphonyfoundation.org
Your help will provide hope for a young generation in allowing them to demonstrate the values of living and working together in peaceful harmony.
Join me, Ian Anderson, in giving your support now to the Polyphony Foundation. A most worthy cause and an important cog in the wheels which grind all-too-slowly towards peace in the Middle East.

Jethro Tull announce The Seven Decades US tour
Jethro Tull are to tour The US later in the year in support of umlaut-friendly new album RökFlöte
Jethro Tull have announced a run of US dates. The Seven Decades tour consists of 17 dates spread over a four month period between August and November, with the first show scheduled for the Ravina Festival in Highland Park, Illinois, on August 18. Full dates below.
The tour is is support of the band's upcoming 23rd studio album, RökFlöte , which will arrive via InsideOut Music this Friday. Pre-sale tickets will be available from April 20 at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster , using the code VINYL. General ticket sales begin the following day.
"The title of this offering went through a little change or two along the way," band leader Ian Anderson says of RökFlöte . "I started with the idea of a predominantly instrumental album for rock flute - as in rock music. When the subject material of the album presented itself, I was drawn to the term Ragnarök from Norse mythology - their version of apocalyptic end times or Biblical Armageddon.
"The "final showdown" scenario is ubiquitous and inherent in Hinduism, Christianity and Islam, for example. Ragnarök translates as destiny of the Gods, the rök part meaning destiny, course, direction. With umlaut firmly in place, courtesy of the Germanic origins of Old Norse, Flute became Flöte in keeping with the spelling. With me so far? I just can't miss the glorious opportunity for a good and legitimate umlaut."
Jethro Tull have released three singles from the album: Hammer On Hammer , Ginnungagap and The Navigators .

I was lucky enough to 'come of age' during the mid to late 1970's and it DEFINATLY was a GREAT DECADE for concerts in NYC and elsewhere!!! I saw Jethro Tull several times, primarily at Madison Square Garden, NYC. At that time, 'Tull' was usually magical to see and hear 'Live". Ian Anderson was at the top of his game and listening to him turn his flute into a 'soaring bird' taking flight was simply AMAZING!!!! I haven't seen them since, but I can only imagine that Anderson has continued to mold into an even better performer.
Sometimes ya just gotta live with the special memories. Concerts today are generally SO OUTRAGOUSLY EXPENSIVE that one has to be picky about which bands are worth dumping $500 to $1000 on, just for a mediocre show.

We thoroughly enjoyed Jethro Tull in such a wonderful setting Ripon Cathedral.
His Christmas mix of songs with his past classics was just fabulous ( not really knowing what to expect !) & Ian could still perform on one leg !
The lighting was atmospheric moody & crisp.
The only slight negative was why on earth did He need Lloyd Grossman singing tame bland punk songs WHICH added absolutely nothing to the overall performance ?? ...if anything it cheapened the whole experience for us being alongside a true global Rock Legend ...…...but never mind We look forward to Jethro Tull live at Ripon again...WE'LL BE THERE !
Cheers & Merry Christmas
Roger Fawcett & Gail Hague ( Harrogate )
Jethro Tull still shine musically, and keep in mind: this is their 50th anniversary tour!
They had great sound, and played their instruments almost flawlessly.
All of them are high-level musicians, but a particular mention goes to Florian Opahle at the electric guitar, who performed beautifully and injected new life in many classic pieces with his own playing style and ideas (maybe a hint more of blues and heavy metal than previous guitarists, but very welcome by the crowd!).
Ian Anderson himself still is a great live performer, both physically moving around the stage and when playing the flute. This despite his age (72 years old). That said, even if it saddens me as a Jethro Tull fan, his voice really doesn't hit the right notes anymore.
He was often losing power to the point of inaudibility while singing even short phrases, and was also often off-key, to the point of being embarrassing.
I believe he recognizes the problem, as he had some videos of younger performers "helping him" sing some of the classic pieces, like "Aqualung".
However, for me his singing kinda hampered the whole concert. Combined to it, was the fact that this was a sitting rather than standing experience.
There was a standing ovation on the last two pieces, and as the last song, "Locomotive Breath" everybody rose to their feet. That was an intensely emotional moment.
tl;dr: recommended only to hardcore Jethro Tull fans. The occasional listener better be beware.

JETHRO TULL will release its 23rd studio album, "RökFlöte" , on April 21 via InsideOut Music . Following 2022's "The Zealot Gene" , the group's first LP in two decades, Anderson and his bandmates are returning with a 12-track record based on the characters and roles of some of the principal gods of the old Norse paganism, and at the same time exploring the "RökFlöte" — rock flute — which JETHRO TULL has made iconic.
"RökFlöte" will be available on several different formats, including two limited deluxe formats that include bonus demo material, extensive liner notes and a Blu-ray featuring Dolby Atmos, 5.1 Surround Sound, alternative stereo mixes by Bruce Soord ( THE PINEAPPLE THIEF ),as well as a bonus track and in-depth interview with Anderson . The album will also be available digitally in the spatial audio formats Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 RA.
Ian explained the album's title and theme in more detail: "The title of this offering went through a little change or two along the way. I started with the idea of a predominantly instrumental album for rock flute — as in rock music. When the subject material of the album presented itself, I was drawn to the term Ragnarök from Norse mythology — their version of apocalyptic end times or Biblical Armageddon. The 'final showdown' scenario is ubiquitous and inherent in Hinduism, Christianity and Islam, for example. Ragnarök translates as 'destiny of the Gods', the rök part meaning destiny, course, direction. With umlaut firmly in place, courtesy of the Germanic origins of Old Norse, Flute became Flöte in keeping with the spelling. With me so far? I just can't miss the glorious opportunity for a good and legitimate umlaut."
"The Zealot Gene" , released in January 2022, was JETHRO TULL 's 22nd studio album and it garnered critical acclaim across the board. Reaching No. 9 in the U.K. album charts, a feat the band hadn't reached since 1972, it also debuted at No. 4 in Germany, No. 3 in Switzerland, No. 5 in Austria, No. 8 in Finland, as well as top 10 in the U.S. album charts, Current Album charts and Rock Album charts.

"The Seven Decades" tour kicks off in August in support of the prog legends' new album RökFlöte
Progressive rock legends Jethro Tull have announced “The Seven Decades” in support of their new album RökFlöte .

Anderson and company have been particularly active as of late, having dropped the first Jethro Tull album in over 20 years, The Zealot Gene , last year. This came after Anderson previously admitted that his days as a singer were “numbered” due to suffering from an incurable lung disease.

Jethro Tull announce ‘The Seven Decades’ tour for 2024
Jethro Tull will tour the UK next year with their ‘The Seven Decades Tour’ it has been announced.
Kicking off at Bristol Beacon on 17th April 2024, the tour will take in 11 dates and see the band performing songs from across their entire catalogue of music. Tickets for the tour are on sale 9am Friday June 16 th from the venues direct or www.Ticketline.co.uk
The tour will encapsulate the seven decades in which Jethro Tull have written and performed music through their 23 studio albums. One of the most important bands that the UK has ever produced, the band continues to push boundaries with their music.
Upon announcing the tour, Ian Anderson, the bands founding member, said, “We have been playing UK tours in many of the same venues for the past 55 years. But the quiet magic of towns and cities I know so well never fails to amuse and amaze. As the equivalent of Michael Portillo with a flute, I tend to use the train for UK tours and travel alone while the others go in a tour bus or vans. Many of the UK theatre venues have changed their names and had the odd facelift, The London Palladium is new for us, as far as I recollect, and takes me back to my youth with nights of TV variety shows. Anyway I digress…
“We shall be playing songs from each of the seven decades of Jethro Tull albums. Learning and rehearsing some half-forgotten tracks from our catalogue is like meeting old friends after a long silence. Yes – they have aged, but the years drop away after a few run-throughs and a couple of beers.
“We hope to see you along the way and bring a hankie for those tearful nostalgic moments. Or to wipe off the flute spit if you are in the front row. Sorry about that!”
The globe trotting The Seven Decades Tour kicks off this August with headline shows and festival appearances through North America before coming to the UK.
The dates for the UK leg are:
Wednesday 17 April – Bristol Beacon
Friday 19 April – Bournemouth Pavilion
Saturday 20 April – Birmingham Symphony Hall
Monday 22 April – London Palladium
Tuesday 23 April – Cambridge Corn Exchange
Monday 29 April – Aberdeen Music Hall
Tuesday 30 April – Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
Thursday 2 May – Gateshead Sage
Friday 3 May – Sheffield City Hall
Sunday 5 May – Manchester Lowry
Monday 6 May – Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
Tickets at all venues priced at a face value of £42.50 – £50, except London priced at face value of £60, £50 & £45. Tickets are available direct from the venues or www.Ticketline.co.uk .

ALBANY–Ian Anderson’s Jethro Tull – The Seven Decades Tour was a mesmerizing and nostalgic journey through the annals of progressive rock, proving that great music knows no bounds of time.
As I walked into the Palace Theatre in Albany for the SOLD OUT show, I couldn’t help but notice the sea of attendees, predominantly male and over 60, many of them sporting the iconic ponytail. It was a demographic that had aged alongside the music; a testament to the enduring power of Anderson’s artistry.
One unique aspect of the evening was the announcement that the show would be cellphone and camera-free. This bold decision, aimed at reducing distractions for both performers and fans, intrigued me. I expected to see a few defiant blue digital glows throughout the crowd, but to my surprise, the audience wholeheartedly embraced the concept. The only distraction was a stray balloon that an audience member set free at the beginning of the show, but after three songs, another fan carefully stored it under their seat until intermission. It was a refreshing sight in today’s world of smartphone addiction.
(Note: The photos you see published with this piece were taken by the author during the encore, which is the one portion of the show where photography was permitted.)
At the age of 76, my main concern was whether Ian Anderson could still deliver the magic that defined our mutual younger years. However, as soon as he took the stage, any doubts were dispelled. While the high notes might not soar as they did 50 years ago, Anderson’s vocal range and stage presence remained impressive. His energy was infectious, and at times, he resembled the mythical Kokopelli, with a leg up, flute in hand.
The Jethro Tull – The Seven Decades Tour was a tribute to Anderson and Tull’s exceptional career spanning over seven decades, and it featured a talented ensemble of musicians who added depth to the performance. The setlist was a journey through Jethro Tull’s iconic discography, from “Nothing Is Easy” to the timeless “Aqualung.” The addition of classical covers like Faure’s “Pavane in F-Sharp Minor” and Bach’s “Bourree in E Minor” showcased Anderson’s versatility and classical influences.
Today, bandleader Anderson is the only original member of Jethro Tull who’s left, but this is not necessarily a bad thing: The flute virtuoso was joined by longtime bassist David Goodier, veteran pianist/organist John O’Hara, and new(er) additions drummer Scott Hammond and guitarist/mandolin player, Joe Parrish-James.
The visuals accompanying the music were a highlight, with a dazzling light show and immersive graphics that added a contemporary touch to the classic tracks. It was a visual feast for fans, old and new, and complemented the music brilliantly.
In an era where music rapidly evolves, Ian Anderson stands as a beacon of artistic integrity and innovation. His Jethro Tull – The Seven Decades Tour is a must-see for any music lover, offering a glimpse into the indomitable spirit of a rock legend. Despite the passage of time, Anderson’s performance was nothing short of extraordinary, leaving the audience with a renewed appreciation for the magic of progressive rock.
Anderson’s ability to transcend generations and continue to sell-out shows after seven decades is a testament to the timelessness of his music. As a fan who has followed his journey since the late 1960s, I can confidently say that Ian Anderson’s Jethro Tull – The Seven Decades Tour was a musical experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Jethro Tull - The Seven Decades
With Ian Anderson as ever central to the performance, this tour will encapsulate the seven decades in which Jethro Tull have written and performed music. Through their 23 studio albums, they have continued to push the boundaries of their music. With Ian’s unique and iconic flute playing paired with his distinct vocal, they are one of the most important and distinctive bands the UK have ever produced and Ian’s desire to continually innovate has ensured they remain as relevant around the world today as they did in the seventies.
Upon announcing the tour, Ian Anderson, the bands founding member, said, “We have been playing UK tours in many of the same venues for the past 55 years. But the quiet magic of towns and cities I know so well never fails to amuse and amaze.
“We shall be playing songs from each of the seven decades of Jethro Tull albums. Learning and rehearsing some half-forgotten tracks from our catalogue is like meeting old friends after a long silence. Yes – they have aged, but the years drop away after a few run-throughs and a couple of beers.”
“We hope to see you along the way and bring a hankie for those tearful nostalgic moments. Or to wipe off the flute spit if you are in the front row. Sorry about that!”

Pioneers of 70s psychedelia and prog-rock legends, Jethro Tull have announced ‘The Seven Decades Tour’ – a celebration of the iconic band’s sprawling discography that began with the seminal 1968 album ‘This Was’ all the way to their current status as globally renowned sonic experimenters.
By the mid-seventies and with a number line-up changes, Ian Anderson remained the focal point and driving force of the band, progressing their sound and live performance to become as globally renowned as Led Zeppelin, Elton John and the Rolling Stones.
Jump on seven decades to 2023 and they’ve sold over 60 million albums, have an extensive global fan base and over 30 studio and live albums to their name… but much remains the same! With Ian Anderson at the helm, the band’s hunger for creativity and experimentation is as strong as ever and only evolves and develops.

Jethro Tull’s First Live Album Returns as Expanded Reissue
Jethro Tull ‘s initial live recording, 1978’s Bursting Out , has been remixed by Steven Wilson for an expanded 3CD/3DVD reissue subtitled The Inflated Edition .
Available on June 21, the box includes lots of cool extras in addition to the originally recorded songs from May and June 1978 concerts in Europe during Tull’s tour behind Heavy Horses . Bursting Out: The Inflated Edition is available for preorder now .
“A live extravaganza from the ’70s Jethro Tull, this was recorded over several nights in different venues on a portable 8-track tape recorder and transferred to 2-inch multitrack when I got home after the tours,” Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson said in an official statement. “I had to listen all through to many shows and pick the best live versions. But much of it was, at least, from the concert in Bern, Switzerland, where dear Claude Nobs came to introduce the band in his inimitable style.”

The complete track listing is below. Among the highlights on The Inflated Edition is the entire 93-minute show from Madison Square Garden, including more than 50 minutes of video which was part of a transatlantic broadcast by the BBC and Radio 1.
“A scary experience for the band as it was, we were told, the first time a live rock concert had been the subject of a live satellite broadcast,” Anderson added. “The band lineup at this time was a fine-tuned machine and, although missing the unwell John Glascock for the MSG show, it serves as a fine testimony for the many wonderful shows we did in the ’70s before general touring fatigue and burn-out began a year or so later. Enjoy vintage Tull at its ’70s best.”
Bursting Out has been previously reissued on compact disc, but the 1990 U.S. version omitted “Quatrain,” “Sweet Dream” and “Conundrum” in order to fit the format’s strict 80-minute limitations.

Jethro Tull is a progressive rock / folk rock band which formed in Blackpool, Lancashire, England in 1967.
