Summer in China – weather, tips and places to visit

Are you planning to travel to China in the heart of summer?

Summer in China is very hot in most corners of the country, but there are ways you can enjoy the warmest time of year.

In this article, I’ll let you in on what I’ve learned about summer in China, how hot it gets, and what to pack to make the most of the sun.

I’ll also tell you the best places to visit if you don’t want to traipse all over the Great Wall of China when it’s hot enough to fry an egg on the stone.

What’s summer in China like?

China is in the northern hemisphere, so its summer months are the same as North America and Europe, from June to August.

But China is a huge country, so it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that the seasons are very different from one area to another.

Summer temperatures can get quite extreme in many areas, from scorching heatwaves in the north to unbearable humidity in the southern provinces .

apps banned in china

So, if you’re not comfortable with that, then you might need to find some cooler areas to spend your time in, or even a different time to travel such as autumn in China .

However, if you have to travel in summer, then you can still have an amazing experience.

Here’s a quick guide for traveling in China in summer:

  • The temperature ranges between 77-91°F / 25-33°C across the country
  • Temperatures can and will get hotter than the mean temperature range, which can be very uncomfortable if you aren’t used to heat
  • Attractions at tourist hotspots are crowded, as many families are enjoying school holidays
  • Nature is at its best in summer, so the more rural areas will be amazing
  • In the southeast, the summer means some rainy days, so bring your wet weather gear
  • Wear shorts, t-shirts, sandals, hats, and use lots of sunscreen.

Blogger Mike has put together a complete list of travel tips for China if you want more help and advice for your adventure.

Summer temperatures in China

Here’s a summary of average summer temperatures in China.

As you can see, you’re guaranteed to get plenty of warm and sunny days no matter what part of China you visit.

The dangers of traveling in summer

The sun is so strong that street vendors cover up. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

There are a couple of dangers that you need to be aware of if you’re planning to travel to China in summer.

One is the heat itself. If you aren’t used to it, the long, hot days can be very tiring especially if you’re doing a lot of walking. So, make sure you drink lots of water and cover up with breathable clothing and sun protection.

While I was in Fuzhou, I once made the stupid decision to climb the 2,000 steps up Gushan Mountain in the middle of summer.

I’m used to the heat, but by the end I felt like a melted puddle. Don’t be like me – choose cooler days for your temple climbs!

Another issue is mosquitos. Summer is mosquito season in southern China and these little pests can carry all kinds of diseases including Japanese Encephalitis.

(You can look up the recommended vaccinations for China here .)

While you should be OK in the big cities, if you plan on getting off the beaten path you should bring and wear insect repellent, particularly at dawn and dusk, when the mosquitos are out looking for a bite.

What to pack for summer travel in China

tourists in china during summer rain storm

An umbrella can come in handy in the southern tropical areas. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

To be honest, you don’t need to pack any differently to enjoy your summer vacation in China than you would for any other destination.

However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind such as:

  • Bring sunscreen and insect spray from home if you have sensitive skin as you’ll struggle to find familiar brands in China
  • Shorts, skirts and t-shirts are fine most of the time
  • China is a bit more conservative than other countries, so avoid really short and tight clothing if you want to avoid getting leered at
  • Bring a hat, and even an umbrella (that’s what the locals use to protect themselves)
  • Make sure you pack shoes that are good for lots of walking as you’ll be doing a lot of it
  • Choose light and loose outfits in natural fabrics for the best cooling effects
  • Bring a thin top for evenings or air-conditioned places
  • Don’t pack too much as you’ll be able to buy almost everything you need in China
  • Wear sunglasses
  • If you’re traveling in tropical areas, pack an umbrella , raincoat, and waterproof shoes.

Something else to remember is that southern and even eastern China can be very humid.

In this climate, heavy fabrics like denim will take forever to dry, so if you’re going to need to wash your jeans during your trip, it’s probably better to leave them at home.

I once took jeans on a trip to Hong Kong, and I swear that they were wetter after two days of drying than they had been when I’d first washed them.

Where to travel in summer in China

Like I said, if you don’t like the scorching sun, then there are parts of China that are much more comfortable in the summer time.

There are also some Chinese destinations that are at their best in summer. Here are some places that should be at the top of your list to visit in summer time:

potala palace tibet

Summer is a popular time to visit Tibet. Image by nrxfly on Pixabay.

If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting Tibet, then summer is a great time to make that dream come true.

The weather is milder than in most parts of China, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery, Tibetan culture and local festivals without losing half your body weight in sweat.

Just note that this is the time that most Chinese people come to visit Tibet, as winter temperatures are really biting there.

Beach destinations

tourists at chinese beach in summer

China has a few decent beaches. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

If you can’t beat the heat, then why not make the most of it?

Despite the fact that China isn’t really known as a beach destination, it does have some great beach locations where you can enjoy the sun, sand, and uninterrupted blue skies.

Some of my best picks for a beach holiday in China are Sanya, Xiamen, Qingdao, and Dalian. And, even though you wouldn’t expect it from a megacity, the beaches near Shenzhen aren’t bad either!

If you only have time for one, then I recommend Sanya. As an Australian, I loved the beachy feel of this destination as well as the cultural sites, especially the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone with its lush gardens and sea views.

The mountains

Emei Shan

You could take refuge in the lushness of Mount Emei (but climbing will make you sweat). Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

Being in a city in summer, with all the concrete and metal radiating heat, can be a kind of punishment.

You can escape from the metal ovens of China’s cities by traveling to some of the mountainous areas like:

  • Zhangjiajie National Forest Park for the mountains made famous in the movie, Avatar
  • Huangshan, which is in Anhui province and boasts some of the most stunning natural scenery in the whole country
  • Emeishan in Sichuan province for the birthplace of Buddhism in China (it’s also close to Chengdu)
  • Moganshan, which is just three hours from Shanghai and has long been a popular place to escape the city’s heat.

Yunnan in summer

Summer trip to the Stone Forest in Yunnan. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

This province is in China’s southwest and boasts spring weather year-round.

This is because the province is located at an altitude of 2,000 meters (6,560 feet). This makes the whole province a great place to escape the summer heat.

Yunnan boasts a unique local cuisine because it’s the province with the largest number of ethnic minority groups in China.

It’s also a global biodiversity hotspot, with amazing animals and more than 600 wild edible mushrooms species. While I was there, I made the goal of eating as many different mushrooms as possible and still didn’t get close to eating them all!

If you aren’t a mushroom fan, then Yunnan also has beautiful natural areas to explore as well as some exciting and historical cities.

Here’s where I recommend you visit:

  • Dali for its ancient city and well-preserved Bai Chinese culture and architecture
  • Kunming, the capital, and its Stone Forest for the amazing stone formations
  • Lijiang for a fascinating Old Town and exploration of the Naxi culture
  • Tiger Leaping Gorge for hiking and trekking
  • Jade Dragon Snow Mountain for outdoor activities in breathtaking surroundings
  • Shangri-La for natural beauty and unique religious monuments.

Most of these places are easily accessible by high-speed train. If you’re traveling independently, you can book your China train tickets here .

Guizhou province isn’t a very popular travel destination, so you can explore without the insane crowds (by Chinese standards).

It’s located in southern China and is very temperate, with comfortable summer temperatures.

When you explore this province, you’ll see and learn about minority cultures that most people have never heard of.

The province also boasts beautiful natural sites such as Mount Fanjing, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018.

Inner Mongolia

yurt in inner mongolia

You can stay in a yurt in Inner Mongolia during summer. Image supplied by Olivia Seaton-Hill.

When you’re staring across the endless grasslands of Inner Mongolia , you’ll come to really understand what natural beauty really means.

Inner Mongolia is an autonomous region in north China and boasts unparalleled and untouched natural beauty.

Mongolia was one of my dream destinations. As an animal and nature lover, it was amazing to see a place that urban sprawl hadn’t ruined.

And going horse riding across the Xilamuren Grassland and attending the Naadam Grassland Fair were experiences that I’ll never forget.

The trekking and horse riding in this region are simply spectacular, and the weather is comfortable enough for you to enjoy every minute.

You can also take the time to explore the local Mongolian culture and maybe even sleep in a yurt during your stay!

The Yangtze River

yangtze river scenery

A Yangtze River cruise is a good option but you’ll still need to watch the heat. Image by cq19690527 on Pixabay.

What could be cooler than spending summer sailing along a river?

The Yangtze River starts in Qinghai province, in the west, and flows all the way to the East China Sea.

The scenery along the river is gorgeous, especially when it’s seen via a luxury cruise so you can sip coffee or wine at the same time. The river breezes are also perfect for cutting down the summer heat.

There are numerous cruise routes along the river, and depending on which one you choose, you’ll get to see famous sites like White Emperor City and Fengdu Ghost City . And you can enjoy all these beautiful places without having to break into a sweat.

You can cruise the full journey between Chongqing and Shanghai on the river, which takes up to 11 days, or take the more popular option between Chongqing and Wuhan.

I recommend the latter, as the cruise only lasts about three or so days, and you’ll get to see the famous Three Gorges Dam along the way.

Where not to go in summer

chinese people using umbrellas to beat the heat

The locals use umbrellas to protect themselves during the summer. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

If you’d prefer to avoid the extreme heat while you’re in China, then there are a few places that you’ll want to avoid.

Nanjing and Wuhan aren’t very pleasant in summer, and should be at the top of your list of cities to avoid. They’re among the hottest Chinese cities, with long summers and temperatures that rise over 98 degrees Fahrenheit (37 Celsius) on a regular basis.

Chongqing is also super hot, so it’s best to avoid this megacity unless your Yangtze River cruise starts from here.

You should also try to avoid the Turpan Depression in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region. This area is located in far Western China close to the city of Turpan.

This trough is the third lowest depression on earth. It’s also the hottest and driest part of China, with temperatures that often reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius).

This part of the world gets so hot that it sometimes sees temperatures reaching almost 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 Celsius). This has led to the Chinese calling the Turpan Depression one of the ‘furnaces’ of China.

Summer in China: should you go?

cooling down in the chinese summer with cold drinks

Most of China is very hot in summer and you’ll need to cool down any way you can. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

The best time to travel anywhere can be a contentious idea.

Some people love the sun and will do anything to avoid traveling in the winter cold. While others couldn’t think of anything worse than sweating around national monuments during the summer holidays.

This is part of what makes travel so exciting, because you can adapt it to suit your preferences.

So, want to bake yourself? Then head to the beaches in July like I did, though that was mostly because I was still recovering from China’s colder months and wanted to see the sun.

Prefer more pleasant weather so that you don’t melt into your clothes? Then head for Yunnan where it’s nice and warm but not outrageously hot.

Just remember that there’s no right answer here. The perfect time for you to travel is when you have the time, space and money.

And, China is so large that you can even organize the weather to your preferences!

I hope you liked my article about the summer in China. Next, see how long it takes to fly to China on all major routes.

Moganshan boasts of its luxurious resorts, with a price range from 2500rmb to 4000rmb per night, many guesthouse alternatives are easy to find across the entire region.

places to visit in china in the summer

From vibrant cities to jaw-dropping natural wonders like Zhangjiajie, here are the places in China you won’t want to miss © siraphat / Shutterstock

In  China , antiquity and heritage meet 21st-century innovation and lighting-fast development.

This is a country packed with highlights – so many that it might be hard to craft a manageable itinerary. Start by immersing yourself in one of China's gigantic, sprawling cities – which contain plenty of frantic energy, but hidden pockets of serenity, too. Take a break from the crush by soaking up China's natural scenery – think jagged peaks and pine forests draped in a sea of mist that look like they've been lifted straight from one of the country's masterpiece scroll paintings. As one of the world's most ancient civilizations, China also offers wonderful opportunities to explore astounding relics from its millennia of history.

Don't know where to start? Whether you dream of gilded temples, boisterous urban environments, fabulous food or the wonders of the Great Wall, here are our picks of the best places to visit in China.

Imperial shopfronts in a traditional hutong district, Beijing, China

One of the world's greatest cities and China's absolute can't-miss destination, Beijing is home to many of China's big-ticket attractions: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square , the Summer Palace and more. But its appeal goes well beyond blockbuster sights. Get lost among its labyrinth of traditional hutongs (alleyways), marvel at its cutting-edge modern architecture, feast on Peking duck and a million other dishes from across the country, check out the local indie music scene, admire Ming-dynasty ceramics, drop by a traditional teahouse or enjoy a boisterous evening sampling the local baijiu  (sorghum wine).

Buddha scultpures in the Mogao Caves, Dunhuang, China

2. Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang

Along the ancient Silk Road, the atmospheric frontier town of Dunhuang is home to one of the world's most important collections of Buddhist art. Among more than 490 Buddhist caves in the area, the mural and statue-filled Mogao Grottoes represent perhaps the zenith of Buddhist artistry in China.

Tourists on a viewing platform at Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan

3. Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan

One of China's most famous treks, this 22km (14-mile)  hiking trail winds through a World Heritage-listed gorge in Yunnan that is one of Asia's most striking landscapes. Framed by spectacular snow-capped mountains and the scenic Jinshajiang River, the natural monument plunges to depths of 3900m (12,795ft), making it one of the deepest gorges in the world.

The head of the Le Shan Buddha

4. Le Shan, Sichuan

Standing at the confluence of two rivers, the monumental 1200-year old Buddha image  at Le Shan is carved directly into the rock face. World Heritage–listed, the extraordinary monument stands 71m (233ft) tall and 28m (92ft) wide, making it the largest ancient Buddha in the world. Whether you're spiritually included or not, coming face to face with this sculpture is quite a moving experience.

The nighttime skyline of Shanghai, China

5. Shanghai

Glitzy, elegant, historic and cosmopolitan: everything you've heard about Shanghai is true. Just take a stroll through the French Concession or along the Bund , and you'll see for yourself. From the grand display of 1920s architecture to the city's sophisticated restaurants and rooftop bars to the sci-fi neon-lit skyscrapers across the bay, Shanghai is the past and future China brought to vivid life.

A young man looks off the side of the Great Wall of China

6. The Great Wall

Snaking through China's majestic mountainous terrain, the spectacular  Great Wall is the nation's most iconic landmark. Built over two millennia, this awe-inspiring, 21,196km-long (13,170-mile-long) fortification is a true marvel of human accomplishment. In fact, it's not one wall but many, stretching from the east coast all the way to the far western desert. The most easily accessible stretches can be reached by car from Beijing.

A caretaker with baby pandas, Chengdu

With its charming teahouses, lively nightlife and fiery Sichuan food, Chengdu is one of China's most popular cities for travelers. But most folk visit here for one reason: pandas. And while you'd be very lucky to spot one in the wild, sightings are guaranteed at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base . Other draws of this inland regional capital include temples, pavilions and museums devoted to the culture of the ancient Shu kingdom.

Pastoral landscape on Yulong river, Yangshuo, China

8. Karst peaks, Guilin

Spanning the distance from Guilin to Yangshou , the picture-perfect karst-limestone peaks offer an extraordinary backdrop to the scenic Li River and rice paddies. Grab a bicycle or board a raft to tour this beautiful countryside, passing farmers and water buffalo along the way.

A spread of dim sum, Guangzhou, China

9. Guangzhou

This vibrant and dynamic  megacity is one of China's most fascinating hubs. You'll find an intriguing mix of old and new in a city where skyscrapers nudge the clouds, and monks shuffle around 1500-year-old Buddhist temples. But it's the Cantonese cuisine that lures in many, with some of the finest dim sum in all of China.

A woman in traditional dress walks through the terraced rice paddies of Longji, China

10. Longji Rice Terraces, Guangxi

You'll find rice paddies all over China – but few are as spectacular as the ones in Longji , built against a backdrop of lush mountains. Walks here lead to viewpoints overlooking sculpted, iridescent green terraces with swirling patterns resembling the contours of a giant thumbprint.

The Terracotta Warriors of Xi’an, China

11. Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an

Unearthed in Xi'an by unsuspecting rural workers in 1974, this enigmatic army of life-sized statues remains of the world's most remarkable archaeological finds. Dating back 2200 years, they were built to protect the underground tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Needless to say, meeting the warriors face to face is an experience you'll never forget.

People and street vendors in the Muslim Quarter in Xi’an, China

12. Xi'an

In a country where cities seemingly spring up overnight, this is one of the oldest and grandest. Known to most for its extraordinary Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an is also remarkable in its own right – notably as the beginning of the Silk Road, a trade route with a legacy that remains intact within its atmospheric Muslim Quarter .

Visitors on the glass cliff walk at Tianmen Mtn, Zhangjiajie, China

13. Zhangjiajie

Rising dramatically from the subtropical forests of northwest Hunan , the pinnacle rock formations of  Zhangjiajie inspired the scenery in the film Avatar (2009). Take it all in as you walk over a vertiginous glass-bottom suspension bridge floating 300m (984ft) above ground. If that's not daring enough, you can bungee jump off it, too.

As side gate of the Hall of Preserving Harmony on a snowy day, Forbidden City, Beijing, China

14. Forbidden City, Beijing

Among China's imperial sights, none can compare in size, grandeur or mystique to Beijing's Forbidden City . Built between 1406 and 1420, this sprawling palace was off-limits for 500 years until the overthrow of the last Qing emperor in 1911. Today, it's very much open to the public, attracting nearly 20 million visitors each year. Despite the crowds, its massive scale remains humbling.

Best Summer Activities in China

places to visit in china in the summer

Summer in China can be summed in two words: hot and wet.

There’s no getting around it, so be prepared to sweat and drink a lot of water. It’s pretty hot most places in summer though, isn’t it? So heat and humidity shouldn't be too shocking.

The Weather

From mid-May through mid-July, the rainy season kicks in across southern and eastern China. The rains are nicknamed the plum rains (梅雨 meiyu, or “may yoo” in Mandarin) for the season when the fruit ripens. Frankly, during those weeks, it feels as if nothing can grow but mold. But don’t be downtrodden; bring rain gear and you’ll be fine. Northern China doesn’t have the same precipitation pattern so make your itinerary include Beijing and Xi’an if you’re worried about getting too wet. After the rains end, you’re likely to seek shade from the scorching sun and blue skies that govern the later part of the summer.

There’s a lot to do in the summer months and some great festivals to try to catch as well. The summer months are the perfect time to tour Tibet as the weather is the mildest and most of the festivals take place in July and August. Visit beach cities like Qingdao and Xiamen to catch some rays, or head all the way down to Hainan to really cook on the white sand beaches of the island. If you’re hanging out in any of the big cities, Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai all have great outdoor venues and you’ll find many places to sit in the shade and drink tea - or something stronger - and relax.

Summer Activities

Beach: If it’s beach-time you’re after, try one of these destinations for sand and sun:

  • Xiamen , formerly known as Amoy, is a relaxing smallish city directly across from Taiwan that has great beaches, long stretches of the promenade, nice seafood restaurants, and a laid-back atmosphere.
  • Qingdao, most famous for its beer, is another smaller Chinese city with famous beaches and plenty of places to soak up the sun.
  • Sanya, a city on Hainan Island in the South China Sea, is the mecca for serious beach-seekers. Full of top international five-star beach resorts, you can take your pick and have a classy beach holiday. (Be sure not to miss the matching his & her Hawaiian outfits available in all the hotel shops...)

Nature: If you’re looking to see some nature and mountain landscapes then these are perfect choices:

  • Tibet enjoys its best weather in summer months and there's not a better time to go in order to catch great festivals.
  • Jiuzhaigou is a famous national park and reserve in Sichuan Province. Many ethnic Tibetans live there so it's culturally interesting but the reason to go is the scenery. Full of pristine forests and clear lakes, if you're coming from a big city you'll be relieved to see that there is some amazing nature left in China.
  • Mount Song & Shaolin Temple is a great destination if you want to combine a little history and religion with your nature walk.
  • Four Buddhist Holy Mountains draw thousands of tourists and climbers every summer. If you're really ambitious, perhaps you could make it to all four?
  • The Great Wall just has no match in China. No, it's not off the beaten path. Yes, you'll probably be there with hundreds of other tourists. But it's famous for a reason. Don't miss it if you're near Beijing.

Green: If you don't have time to head too far out, some Chinese cities have plenty of green , many have gardens which are famous:

  • Visit any Chinese park
  • Suzhou's famous gardens
  • Hangzhou and the West Lake or Moganshan.
  • The Giant Panda Breeding Base in Chengdu offers lots of green bamboo and giant cuddly animals.

Shanghai: In Shanghai , these are great summer activities:

  • Eat al fresco at some of Shanghai's greatest restaurants.
  • Grab your comfy shoes and go on a walking tour in the following areas:
  • Fuxing Road
  • Honkou and the Old Jewish Quarter
  • Shaoxing and Taikang Roads
  • Go on a relaxing Huang Pu River cruise to take in the Bund sights without exerting too much energy. (Did I mention it'll be hot in summer?)
  • And when in Shanghai, it's also great to take a short trip to a nearby water town .

Beijing: And in Beijing , any of these activities are great for summertime.

Summer Festivals

  • Qingdao International Beer Festival
  • Shoton Festival in Tibet

The Best Things to See and Do in China in Summer

Xiamen summer

Whether you’re trying to get away from the heat or soak it all in, China has the perfect summer destination for you. From the al fresco bars of Shanghai all the way to the Mt. Everest base camp in Tibet, here are the best things to see and do in the summer.

Embrace the beijing bikini.

During the summer, most of China gets hot, hot, hot, with temperatures rising into the 30s (°C (86°F upwards)) and beyond. Some ingenious men have taken to beating the heat by rolling their shirts up above their bellies and sporting a look that has become affectionately known as the ‘Beijing bikini.’ Go to the place it all began, Beijing, and enjoy a summer with the best of them. While you’re there, check out the aptly named Summer Palace , and, of course, the Great Wall.

Heat up in the Gobi Desert

Cool off on Mt. Everest

Mt. Everest is not just in Nepal; in fact, the northern base camp is situated well within China’s Tibetan borders. During the summer, buses are allowed to drive up to the base camp, saving you the (literally) breathtaking climb. Be aware that you must secure two separate permits from the Chinese government in order to make the journey: one for the mountain itself, and another for the Tibetan Autonomous Region .

Relax on the beach in Xiamen

Want to be a beach bum all summer but avoid the tourist-packed Hainan Island? Go to Xiamen instead, where the beaches are well-kept – not just in appearance, but also as secrets. This former British colonial city is known for being one of China’s most livable, and the beaches of pedestrian-only Gulangyu Island are the perfect relaxing summer destinations.

Hold on to spring in Kunming

Kunming is the capital of and largest city in Yunnan province. Nicknamed the ‘Spring City’ for its mild climate known in Chinese as si ji ru chun , or “spring all year round,” Kunming is more than just the jumping off point for other Yunnan destinations. In 2003, the city was listed among the top ten best summer resort cities and itself has some unmissable attractions, namely Yuantong Temple, Dianchi Lake and Guandu Old Town.

Celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in Hunan

There are few more recognizably Chinese holidays than the Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated each year on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. On this day, people around the county gorge themselves on zongzi and watch sportsmen vie for the title of fastest boat. The legend behind the festival has it that after the poet Qu Yuan drowned himself in Hunan’s Miluo River, admirers raced out to try to save him. When they couldn’t find him, they dropped balls of rice into the river so the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan’s body. Today, you can celebrate Dragon Boat Festival where it all began, on the Miluo River in Hunan .

Dine al fresco in Shanghai

There are few better ways to beat the heat than by enjoying a cold drink surrounded by a warm breeze. Shanghai is the best place to do this, with endless bars and restaurants around the city offering al fresco dining . For many options all in one place, try the sunken expat-refuge of Found 158, or opt for the swankier versions on the Bund.

Top Seven Places That Are a Must Visit in China in Summers

Barsbold Baatarsuren

China has long been known as the embodiment of all that is mystical and exotic, ever since the world first discovered it through the writings of explorer Marco Polo more than 700 years ago. Even after decades of economic growth, this vast country retains its allure. Indeed, the contrast between ancient Chinese traditions and the current ultra-modern state that is emerging has only heightened interest in a civilization that spans millennia.

The preservation of significant historic sites such as the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace in Beijing , both of which remember the days of China's emperors, demonstrates how much the Chinese value this tradition. Then there's the Great Wall , which stretches 6,700 kilometers from the Yellow Sea to Central Asia, with its countless shrines evoking the spirit of ancient Eastern religions.

China, as a tourist destination , provides an almost infinite amount of exploration opportunities due to its scale. If you want to cruise through the Yangtze Gorges on a luxury cruise ship, visit a busy city, or seek out the serenity of an ancient temple, this country is full of amazing experiences and sightseeing opportunities.

With our list of the best tourist attractions in China , you will find interesting, unusual, and exciting things to do and the top seven places that are a must visit in China in summers.

Yunnan Province

Yunnan is a great place to visit in China during the summer. Yunnan has a year-round spring-like climate due to its 2,000-meter altitude and ample heat and light. Yunnan will provide you with a nice summer vacation. Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La are the best cities to visit in Yunnan.

Yunnan Province

Begin your journey in Kunming with a visit to the spectacular Stone Forest, followed by a relaxing tour along Erhai Lake in Dali, a visit to Lijiang's Old Town, and a cable car ride to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain . Finally, visit Songzanlin Lamasery and Pudacuo National Park to immerse yourself in Shangri-stunning La's natural beauty and holy religious atmosphere.

The Great Wall of China

"No one can be a true hero unless he has walked the Great Wall," says a traditional Chinese proverb, emphasizing the significance attached to this specific ancient monument.

The majestic Great Wall of China, also known as the 'Long Wall' in Chinese, extends more than 6,000 kilometers from the fortresses of Shanhaiguan in the east to Jiayuguan in the west, passing through Hebei, Tientsin, Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Gansu.

The Great Wall of China

The wall, which averages six to eight meters in height but can reach 16 meters in places and is large enough for five horses or ten men to pass through, has several battlements and watchtowers. Some of the wall's earliest fortifications date back to the 7th century BC, with the best-known parts being added around 210 BC when the different sections were joined together.

The most famous section of the wall today is near Badaling Pass, northwest of Beijing, and is easily accessible by public transportation or organized tours . The restored parts near Gubeikou, 130 kilometers from Beijing, and Mutianyu, 70 kilometers northeast of Beijing, are both worth visiting.

Chengdu – Meet Adorable Giant Pandas

Chengdu is known for its pandas. The most common reason for visitors to Chengdu is to see the adorable giant pandas.

Chengdu Pandas

Pandas are used to decorate the city and can be found in many different ways, including panda caps, panda purses, panda shoes, panda buses, and so on.

Mount Emei in Sichuan Province, Southwest China, is one of China's most well-known summer destinations, thanks to its warm weather, welcoming environment, inspiring natural scenery, and Buddhist cultural influence.

Four Girls Mountain, so called because of its appearance, is made up of four snowcapped peaks that are common among climbers and hikers.

Zhangjiajie — An Unreal World

Zhangjiajie is known for its spectacular mountain scenery. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, China's first national forest park, is a natural summer resort. The park serves as a natural air conditioner and oxygen bar thanks to its towering mountains, clear streams, and fresh air.

Zhangjiajie

The mountains are lush with green trees in the summer and are shrouded in mist on rainy days. The cool breeze blows the summer heat away as you walk between the mountains.

Take the world's longest cable car to Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, which has the highest point. When you ride a cable car to the top of the mountain, the heat dissipates. The misty rain and fog add to the allure of the mountain top vistas. View the 99 Bends and the grand Tianmen Cave from the cliff-hanging walkway.

Guizhou Province — Explore Chinese Minority Culture

Guizhou Province is an excellent summer destination due to its temperate climate and lack of extreme heat.

You'll learn about places and communities that you've never heard of before. In 2018, Mount Fanjing was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It isn't a popular tourist destination right now, so you can have a relaxing trip there. You will not be disappointed by the cool weather and cloud-wrapped Mushroom Rock.

Guizhou Province

After Yunnan Province, Guizhou has the second largest number of minority groups. Guizhou is home to many ethnic groups, including Tujia, Miao, and others. You may learn traditional crafts like making paper from vegetable fiber, batiking, and silver ornament making, which are all on the decline.

Huangshan — Explore Ancient Historical Villages

Huangshan is located in eastern China, near Shanghai . It is one of China's most visited tourist destinations. Huangshan is known for its beautiful natural scenery and rich history.

Huangshan

Investigate Hongcun Village. It's a lovely old village where painters come to capture the mix of ponds, willows, and ancient architecture on canvas. It's near the Yellow Mountains' foothills.

Tunxi Old Street is a must-see. It was a business district. The buildings were built during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. The Anhui style, also known as Huizhou architecture, is a form of architecture. These buildings have a similar appearance to the Hongcun merchant houses. It's the best-preserved part of the Huangshan Villages.

The Silk Road — Discover Chinese History and Culture

The Silk Road was a vital foreign trading route in ancient times, and it spans a large distance, passing through some incredible scenic and cultural locations.

The Silk Road

The scenery along the Silk Road, as well as the historic and cultural sites, is fascinating. In Xi'an , visit the Terracotta Army and Ancient Walls, and in Dunhuang, visit the grand Mogao Grottoes, where you can see Buddhist history written on the walls. Learn about the Silk Road's origins and culture. It will be interesting and significant.

You can spend a whole day there to see its marvelous design, the huge Kunming Lake, and the charming views from the hilltop. Walk around the grounds or go boating in the Summer Palace. 2. Hike the Great Wall at Simatai at Night

It's not recommended to hike the Great Wall in the daytime with the unbearable heat that summer provides. However, you can enjoy the famous Great Wall at night. Best Places to Visit in China in the Summer Posted by sasha on Jul 19, 2017 in Culture

Summer is here, and it’s a great time to travel in China. Sure, it’s a busy time of year, but that’s always the case in the world’s most populous country. In my 5+ years of living in China, I ended up doing most of my traveling during the summer months. Here are a few of the best places to visit in China in the summer, with links to more detailed posts and some videos to check out.

In the hot summer months, most people just want to find a beach. In China, get ready to see where the old Chinglish idiom “ people mountain, people sea ” (人山人海 – rén shān rén hǎi) comes from when you see how crowded the beach can get. That being said, if you can deal with the crowds there are plenty of places to have an awesome beach holiday in China.

A view of the Xiamen skyline.

While much of Fujian remains isolated and less developed, Xiamen (厦门 – xià mén) has thrived and is a bustling city for both business and tourism. Centered on Xiamen island, there are also four other districts on the mainland plus the small island of  Gulangyu  (鼓浪屿 – gǔ làng yǔ). Most tourists spend a majority of their time here. There’s more to do in Xiamen, however, including beaches, parks, and temples, so you could easily spend a few days here.

Summertime, and the livin’s easy.

Exploring beautiful churches and other historical landmarks, lounging on the beach, eating delicious seafood, and partying at a massive beer festival. That’s what summertime in Qingdao (青岛 – qīng dǎo) is like. Just be warned that it is a very popular place to visit, especially during the beer fest. That being said, my two trips to Qingdao in August were two of the best times I had while living in China. Check out some highlights from the beer festival and start planning your trip:

If you’re like me, you think that sitting on the beach gets boring before too long. Give me an adventure over a beach any day! Here are a few great spots for adventure-lovers in China.

The Dragon’s Backbone

The autonomous region of Guangxi (广西 – guǎng xī) is the perfect spot for a summer adventure. You can start off exploring the city of Guilin  (桂林 – guì lín) for a day or so – just make sure to eat the famous rice noodles. Catch the bus or take a raft along the Li River to the scenic town of Yangshuo (阳朔 – yáng shuò), where you can spend your days cycling, hiking, playing in the river, and enjoying the raucous nightlife. Wind it all down with a hike in the beautiful  Longji Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田 – lóng jí tī tián) – a landscape so amazing you’ll have to see it in person to believe it’s real.

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Making our way down.

When it comes to adventures, it’s hard to beat a hike of  Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡 – hǔ tiào xiá) in Yunnan province. Walk high up in the mountains gazing down at the rushing Yangtze River and then come down the next day to see the spot where a tiger supposedly leapt over it. The scenery out here is absolutely breathtaking!

While the concrete jungle can be incredibly hot during the summer months, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit any cities on your trip! Plus, if you’re flying to China from another country, chances are you’ll have to start and finish your trip in one of the big cities anyways.

Beijing doesn’t look so bad from up here.

It’s true that the capital of Beijing (北京 – běi jīng) gets so hot in the summer that guys roll up their shirts over their bellies in what’s known as the “Beijing bikini.” Go ahead and join them if you’re feeling the heat! Summertime in Beijing is best spent outside of the ring roads. There are plenty of awesome day trips you can take, such as rafting and bungee jumping out at Shi Du or hiking around the Red Snail Temple.

The awesome Shanghai skyline.

Shanghai (上海 – shàng hǎi) is definitely the most cosmopolitan, modern city in mainland China. You can spend a day or two admiring the new skyline on one side of the Huangpu River and the Bund on the other for a mix of historic and futuristic architecture. Come hungry, because there’s lots of delicious food being cooked up here. Check out some cheap eats in Shanghai in this short video:

A great part about visiting Shanghai is its proximity to other amazing places. You can visit some scenic water towns, hike the Yellow Mountain, or check out other famous cities like Suzhou (苏州 – sū zhōu) or Hangzhou (杭州 – háng zhōu). Thanks to China’s lightning-quick high speed rail network, you can do a lot with only four or five days in this area.

Many metro lines start around 5am, but the departure time of the first train will differ per station. You can check it online, for instance here https://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/beijing/transportation/subway.htm

Alternatively you can book a Didi ride. Will probably take 35-40 minutes from your hotel to the East gate, depending on traffic.

With an early start you could enter through the East gate, walk to the 17 arches bridge, check out the island in Kunming Lake, then walk back and go to the Long corridor, the Marble boat etc. By the time you’ve seen those places the other sights will open.

The grounds of the Summer Palace are massive. You can spend a day exploring the whole place.

You mean the gardens?

Grounds = gardens ?

I wouldn’t call it a garden. Of course there’s greenery but it’s not full of flower beds etc.

the summer palace is open earlier during the summer time because it is the morning exercise place for elderly. You can join them and find out their longavity solution. Indeed, from my POV, it is the best time before 8am in the gardern before the business starts.

You can enter the garder from the east gate and follow the traditional tour route, along it, you can see the POIs. As the regular tour inside the gardern, you'd better to walk around the lake named Kunming Lake. It is approx. 5 km of the lake circle.

As well, transportation is not a problem, you can take subway, bus and taxi, which won't spend too much.

Hope a.m. are helpful of you.

It’s almost inappropriate not to make the most of summer’s quiet stretches and skip off for a trip somewhere new. This is bona fide vacation season, after all. And while destinations with special summertime appeal abound, remember that our summer is winter in the Southern Hemisphere—a prime time to explore countries there, not just for the temperate climate, but also for the wild seasonal events.

Here are seven glorious places for a summer jaunt, each with a must-see reason to go right now.

 That's it for today.

We're wrapping up the Politics Hub, but make sure to join us again tomorrow.

And remember, at 7pm tomorrow there's a special episode of the Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge.

It will come live from one of our Target Towns, Grimsby, and will feature brand new polling and a live audience.

Before you go, here are some of today's main stories.

By Alexandra Rogers , political reporter

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has said he wants the new NATO target for defence spending to increase from the current 2% of gross domestic product to 2.5%.

Mr Shapps said it would make a "real difference" if the countries signed up to the military alliance met his proposed target.

He told Kay Burley on Sky News: "We're now saying we think that should be 2.5%. We think in a more dangerous world that would make sense.

"I will be arguing that, and I know that the prime minister feels strongly about it, when we go to the NATO 75th anniversary summit which is in Washington DC."

The defence secretary's intervention comes after Rishi Sunak pledged to increase UK defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030 to tackle the "growing threats" posed by hostile states including Russia, Iran and China.

Speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference in Warsaw yesterday, the prime minister said he planned to steadily increase defence spending by the end of the decade, rising to 2.4% a year until 2027-28 - then hitting 2.5% by 2030-31.

Funding will rise from £64.6bn in 2024 to £78.2bn in 2028, and then jump to £87bn in 2030-31.

"There isn't a single safe prosecution brought by the Post Office in the last couple of decades," Conservative MP and former minister David Davis has told Sky News.

He was responding to comments made by a lawyer representing former sub-postmasters, who told Sky News the Post Office scandal extends "greatly beyond" faulty Horizon software (see previous post).

Paul Marshall said problems with other systems which have been "overlooked" mean there are "no convictions" secured by the Post Office against any sub-postmaster "that could or should properly be treated as safe".

Sir Davis says although the government has done a "great deal already" to exonerate Horizon victims, "we probably have to do more".

He cites a report which he says found there are other cases that "at least deserved a very close look and probable exoneration, and that didn't happen".

He estimates the courts could go through " nearly all the cases in three or six months if we set ourselves the task of doing it".

He describes the Post Office as "a public body which wasn't serving the public".

By Adele Robinson , business correspondent

The Post Office scandal extends "greatly beyond" faulty Horizon software, according to a lawyer for victims.

Paul Marshall, representing former sub-postmasters, says problems with third party systems in branches, such as ATMs, have been "overlooked".

A 2013 report commissioned by the Post Office, and not made public at the time, states: "Removing the ATM reduces the risk of (the sub-postmaster) being suspended... as does the presence of lottery tickets, (banking) services, and DVLA processing."

It indicates there were issues known to the Post Office with third party systems within branches - separate to Horizon software.

Barrister Paul Marshall believes, as a result, there are "no convictions" secured by the Post Office against any sub-postmaster "that could or should properly be treated as safe".

He says evidence of third party errors, such as ATMs, shows "the scandal extends considerably beyond, greatly beyond, it might be said, the limited focus of bugs in Horizon".

Blanket exoneration legislation being introduced this summer will only quash convictions brought about "by erroneous Horizon evidence".

Mr Marshall asserts that postmasters who have had appeals against convictions rejected by the Court of Appeal may have lost because their offences didn't fall within the "narrow scope" of Horizon issues.

There might not be a general election just yet, but there are important votes that will define how the areas around us are run for the next four years.

See what's happening where you are here:

With a general election looming, what counts as gains and losses for the main parties in next week's locals?

Sky's election analyst Michael Thrasher tells us what to look out for:

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about the different political parties.

With the local election campaign well under way, Labour is still sitting comfortably on a roughly 21-point lead, averaging at 43.5% in the polls, with the Tories on 23.5%.

In third is Reform UK on 12.2%, followed by the Lib Dems on 9.3%.

The Green Party stands at 6.3%, and the SNP on 3.0%.

See the latest update below - and you can read more about the methodology behind the tracker  here .

By Beth Rigby , political editor

This was a trip with two aims: to refocus the world's attention on Ukraine and announce a big boost in defence spending - with an eye, of course, on national security, but also on the general election.

When it comes to Ukraine, this was a co-ordinated effort across the Atlantic.

As Rishi Sunak arrived in Berlin, overnight in Washington the US was finally approving a $600m military aid package for Kyiv.

This was all designed to send a message to Russia - allies are in lockstep and will stand behind Ukraine for as long as it takes.

The prime minister used the Poland leg of the trip to commit the UK to spending 2.5% of GDP on defence by 2030, while in Berlin, Mr Sunak announced a formal bilateral security partnership with Germany to deepen co-operation on defence and military manufacturing.

It was all part of his agenda to position himself as a wartime leader, speaking of the UK's defence industry going onto a war footing as Europe stood at a turning point.

"The world we are living in is increasingly dangerous and the axis of authoritarian states are working together to undermine our security," he told his audience in Berlin.

"We need to do more. Germany has done more and we have met the NATO standard [on spending], and you see global defence spending is rising."

Mr Sunak added: "I do believe we will look back at this moment in time and recognise this inflection point, where the old paradigm is no longer the case and we need to adjust for a new paradigm."

That's all for tonight.

But make sure to join us again tomorrow - Sophy is heading to Grimsby to discuss why so many people have turned off politics.

There'll be a live audience and new polling laying out the situation in one of our Target Towns, so make sure to tune in at 7pm on Thursday.

Labour's Angela Rayner has attacked the Conservatives for "obsessing" over her living arrangements while renters continue to face uncertainty over the government's promise to end no-fault evictions.

The party's deputy leader has come under scrutiny over the sale of her former Stockport home before she was an MP, with claims she did not pay the right amount of capital gains tax and may have registered to vote at the wrong address - allegations she denies.

Greater Manchester Police are now looking into the latter issue, which could be a breach of electoral rules, following a complaint from Tory MP James Daly.

But standing in at Prime Minister's Questions on the day the much-delayed Renters' Reform Bill returned to the Commons, Ms Rayner said: "I know this party opposite is desperate to talk about my living arrangements, but the public want to know what this government is going to do about theirs."

Ministers first promised to scrap no-fault evictions - or Section 21s - in April 2019, but agreed to an indefinite delay to outlawing the mechanism after a group of Conservative backbenchers, including some landlords, raised concerns that the courts were not prepared for the legal cases that could replace them.

A new clause being added to the bill by the government today would, if approved, order an assessment of the courts before any ban could be enacted. But it offers no timetable for when the probe would have to take place.
