10 Most Beautiful Islands in Portugal

By Vanessa Holmes · Last updated on May 4, 2024

Portugal is a country with exceptional scenery, gorgeous beaches and a rich heritage. Visiting Portugal can be a chance to enjoy some of the best surfing in the world, a growing wine industry and exciting cities like Lisbon and Aveiro. Although spending time in Portugal is a fantastic idea, you might also want to explore beyond the mainland.

The best islands in Portugal can be found off the coast of the Algarve, and the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. Take a closer look at some of these Portuguese islands, many of which boast breathtaking scenery and world-class beaches.

10. Ilha de Armona

Ilha de Armona

Portugal’s Algarve region is wildly popular with tourists, but those in the know head just a little further south to the island of Armona. Located just off the coast, Armona is easily accessible by ferry, but it is completely car-free and feels a world away from the mainland of Portugal.

With four miles of sandy, pristine beaches, Armona is a dream destination for those who want sun, sand, sea and warmth. Armona still retains an authentic atmosphere, with cobblestone streets and Moorish architecture, and little in the way of traditional tourist infrastructure. This means Armona is off the beaten track and ideal for relaxation.

9. Faial Island

Faial Island

In the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean are the Azores, a collection of autonomous islands belonging to Portugal. Faial is one of the Azores, and it is known as the Blue Island. There are three main attractions in Faial: The volcanic craters, the town of Horta and the beaches.

The best way to experience the volcanic origins of Faial is by visiting the Caldeira do Faial, which is nearly one mile across. In Horta, you can dig into fabulous, authentic Portuguese cuisine, and you can admire the ships in the marina. The Marina of Horta is steeped in legend, and all sailors passing through contribute to the murals on its walls.

8. Sao Jorge Island

Sao Jorge Island

Another of the Azores Islands in the Atlantic is Sao Jorge. The island is long and thin, and it boasts tall cliffs that contribute to its dramatic landscape. Traditionally, the mountains, ravines and cliffs made all but the coasts uninhabitable, but today the interior of the island is ideal for hiking.

Those in search of an extra adventure can explore the Montoso and Bocas do Fogo caves. Sao Jorge is a foodie’s dream, offering local cuisine like clam dishes unique to the island as well as a tangy, unpasteurized cheese produced with milk from the island’s grass-fed cows.

7. Porto Santo Island

Porto Santo Island

North of Madeira in the North Atlantic Ocean is the island of Porto Santo. The island’s main attractions are its beaches, and it boasts more than four miles of pristine, sandy shoreline. Porto Santo also offers a number of historic landmarks, including the former house of Christopher Columbus.

You can also tour the 16th century Paços do Concelho, a town hall and palace, as well as the 15th century Matriz Church. Other popular pastimes to enjoy on the island of Porto Santo include golfing and hiking to the highest spot on Porto Santo, a peak known as Pico da Facho.

6. Sao Miguel Island

Sao Miguel Island

Another of the remarkable Azores Islands is Sao Miguel, the largest in the island chain. If you’re flying to the Azores, you’ll likely land in the major airport located in the city of Ponta Delgada. Scattered throughout the island are volcanic calderas and hot mineral springs, and the hiking trails surrounding the Sete Cidades Caldera are among the best in the Azores.

After a day of action, relax in the famed hot springs of Ponta da Ferraria. Sao Miguel is also well known for its dolphin and whale watching opportunities, and there is no shortage of guided boat tours to let you spot them in the wild.

5. Ilha da Tavira

Ilha da Tavira

Just a few hundred meters off the southern coast of Portugal, and the town of Tavira, is the similarly named Ilha da Tavira. Only accessible by boat, the island is often busy on sunny, warm days when travelers come for a day of sunbathing and swimming.

The further along the beach you walk, the more secluded it will become. Tufted dunes create visual appeal, and bars and restaurants can be found right on the beach. This is the place to go if you’re searching for that perfect, sandy beach without big crowds.

4. Pico Island

Pico Island

Head back across the North Atlantic to Pico, home to the enormous Pico Mountain. This mountain is more than just the tallest in the Azores: It is also the tallest in all of Portugal. It takes about two hours to climb to the summit of Pico, if you’re up for some hiking, and it is the ultimate spot to view the sunset.

From the top of Pico Mountain, you can actually see some of the other islands, such as Sao Jorge and Faial. The island is also home to the largest outdoor, manmade salt-water swimming pool, which is surprising deep and perfect for swimming laps.

3. Terceira Island

Terceira Island

The third largest of the Azores in the North Atlantic is Terceira. This island is less developed, and agriculture is still a major part of the local economy. The city of Angra do Heroismo is home to some colonial architecture, but the real appeal of Terceira is the outdoor activity and landscape. You can relax on the sands of the Praia de Vitoria beaches, or you could set off on a tour of the incredible Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal.

The island is even home to a stunning castle called Castelo de São João Batista, where the Spanish and the Portuguese once held an epic battle against one another. In the island’s fishing village of São Mateus, dig into the local cuisine and wash it down with a bottle of the local green wine, a Portuguese specialty known as Vinho Verde.

2. Flores Island

Flores Island

In the Western Azores is the island of Flores, sometimes known as the Ilha Amarelo Torrado, or the Yellow Island. The name Flores is derived from the abundance of colorful flowers on the island. The landscape of Flores is impressive, with high peaks and deep valleys.

An enormous column basalt formation called the Rocha dos Bordões is a major landmark on the island, but just as scenic are the mirrored surfaces of its peaceful volcanic lakes. Flores also boasts an abundance of waterfalls, including the Poco do Bacalhao Falls close to Faja Grande.

Madeira

Nicknamed the Garden Island and the Pearl of the Atlantic, Madeira is clearly an island with a lot of appeal. Located in the Atlantic, Madeira become a Portuguese colony in the 15th century, and it quickly became known for its local Madeira wine. Today, Madeira is a destination that combines history with recreation.

If you visit, you can see the Levadas aqueducts that date back to the 15th century or admire the incredible 15th century wooden church called Sé Cathedral in the city of Funchal. Madeira’s main attraction is its wealth of verdant landscapes that range from lush parks, colorful gardens, enchanting forests and nature reserves to lofty mountains and pebbled beaches lapped by blue ocean waves.

You cannot deny that the mainland of Portugal is rich in historical sites and cultural attractions, but the islands off of Portugal deserve some acclaim too! So I’ve put together this guide of the best islands in Portugal to visit in 2021!

The country’s collection of islands are like undiscovered gems. However, not everyone knows that Portugal houses some of the most beautiful and fascinating islands on Earth.

Each one of these Portuguese islands has a distinct culture and unique spirit to them. Between the archipelagos of Madeira (an island off the coast of Africa) and the Azores (850 miles west of mainland Portugal), nearly a dozen inhabited islands offer some of the most unique and rewarding experiences for visitors.

So, if you’re wondering which of the Portugal islands you should be visiting – this guide has curated only the best. All of these islands provide breathtaking scenery, views, and stunning sandy beaches. What more could you want on a vacation?

But without further ado, here are fourteen of the best islands off the coast of Portugal to put on your bucket list!

1) Sao Miguel Island

They say, “ Go big or go home ”, so this list starts with the largest island. Sao Miguel is a part of the popular group of Portuguese islands called the Azores Islands. Also known as the  Green Island , Sao Miguel has miles of green rolling hills and farmland. Also scattered throughout the island are an abundance of mineral hot springs, making this island one of the best beach vacation spots in Portugal.

If you are a bit of a thrill-seeker, you can go on a hike through the trails surrounding the  Sete Cidades Caldera (a volcanic complex) . These hiking trails are among the best in the Portuguese Azores islands. Visitors to the island can eat food that has been cooked in the volcanically active ground and enjoy catching a bit of sun on the  black sandy beaches .

Your trip to this magical paradise is incomplete if you haven’t grabbed the opportunity to see a couple of dolphins. Or go on a whale watching tour. Both these marine mammals know how to put on a good show – at the end of it, you’ll be begging for an encore.

2) Madeira

This Portuguese island in the Atlantic, Madeira , has become a legend in producing local wine. Nicknamed the Garden Island and the Pearl of the Atlantic, Madeira is clearly an island with a lot of appeal. The stunning scenery of the Portuguese island of Madeira is one of the islands’ main attractions.

Offering a wealth of expansive landscapes ranging from lush parks, colorful gardens, enchanting forests, and nature reserves to lofty mountains and pebbled beaches lapped by blue ocean waves. Madeira offers its people exotic fruits such as guava and passion fruit, which locals use to prepare a variety of traditional dishes that represent the culture of the island.

Madeira is a destination that combines history with recreation. Hiking is a popular activity here with many of the paths offering amazing views from the mountain peaks. If you visit, take a moment to admire the incredible 15th-century wooden church called Sé Cathedral in the city of Funchal.

Madeira Island Portugal

3) Flores Island

The name of the island, Flores, is inspired by the abundance of colorful flowers that bloom and cover it from peak to valley. Although this beautiful Portuguese island is one of the lesser-known islands – Flores is impressive. The scenery throughout the whole island is so unbelievably beautiful. You’ll feel like you’re in one of the pages of  The Jungle Book

The island of Flores speaks to all the nature lovers. There is plenty to see and do. Experience anything from canoeing, bird watching, hiking, surfing, and whale watching to kayaking and swimming. Flores also has a number of waterfalls, including the infamous  Poco do Bacalhao Falls  close to Faja Grande. Another momentous attraction is  Rocha dos Bordões . This is an amazing natural landmark composed of vertical basalt rocks.

Flores Island . Azores

4) Terceira Island

Terceira is among the Portuguese island group called the Azores. It is the third-largest island of this archipelago in the North Atlantic. Terceira island is less developed, but the agriculture of the island plays a major part in the local economy. The island is also home to some famous historical colonial architecture, but the real appeal of Terceira is the outdoor activities and landscape.

Here you can relax on the sands of the  Praia de Vitoria  beaches. Or better yet, you could set off on a tour of the incredible  Algar do Carvão  Natural Reserve Park, and  Gruta do Natal  Cave System. The island is also home to a stunning castle called  Castelo de São João Batista , where the Spanish and the Portuguese once battled.

São Mateus  is Terceira Island’s fishing village. Here, you can scoff down the delicious local cuisine and wash it down with a bottle of local green wine. No, this doesn’t refer to the hue of the wine but rather the lack of maturity of the grapes when they are bottled. This is a Portuguese speciality known as  Vinho Verde .

Terceira Island Portugal

5) Cape Verde Island

Cape Verde is a Portuguese island off the coast of Africa. Off the coast of Mauritiana to be exact. This island has the most favorable weather for tourists. It is never too hot nor too cold which helped it to become one of the most famous vacation islands.

Although Cape Verde is a combination of ten volcanic islands, the island has beautiful beaches, and the waters there are crystal blue. The island is famous for water sports and water activities like surfing, boating, and much more.

10 Things You Didn't Know About Cape Verde

6) Pico Island – Portugal’s Highest Peak

Pico is one of the islands in the Atlantic that is home to the highest mountain in Portugal,  Pico Mountain . With São Miguel’s   moniker as the  Green Island , Pico is known as the  Grey Island . This is largely due to the volcanic soil that gives it a distinct appearance.

The word  pico  means peak in English and with the tallest mountain in Portugal at your feet, you’ve got to strap up your hiking boots. It takes about two hours to climb to the summit of Pico, and it is the ultimate spot to view the sunset. Making the trek up is completely worth it. A bonus is that you can see some of the other islands from the top of Pico Mountain, such as  Sao Jorge  and  Faial .

The island is also home to the largest outdoor, man-made salt-water swimming pool, which is surprisingly deep and perfect for swimming laps.

But if you don’t consider yourself ‘outdoorsy’, wine tasting is also a popular thing to do in Pico (and it can be your thing too). The  vineyards on Pico Island  have been classified on the UNESCO World Heritage List for cultural significance.

7) Porto Santo Island

Porto Santo is just a 30-minute plane ride from Madeira Island- talk about island hopping. It houses some of the  best  beaches  in Portugal and is truly one of the best islands to visit. Its coast runs more than four miles and many water activities can be done in its beautiful blue waters, most notably snorkeling and diving. Some other popular activities that can be enjoyed on the island are hiking and golfing.

If you have a keen interest in history, Porto Santo has several historic landmarks you may also like to visit. These historical attractions include the Christopher Columbus Museum, the 16th-century  Paços do Concelho  (the City Hall), and the 15th-century Matriz Church.

Porto Santo Island Portugal

8) Ilha de Tavira

Only accessible by boat, the island is often abuzz with visitors who come for a day of basking in the sun. However, the appeal of Ilha island is that this is the place to go if you’re searching for sandy beaches without big crowds. The further along the beach you walk, the more solitude and calm you’ll experience.

There is also an endless line of bars and restaurants to enjoy that can be found right on the beach.

CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS PORTUGAL! 🇵🇹 TAVIRA & CACELA VELHA (ALGARVE)

9) Faial Island

This island is yet another beautiful Azores island known as Faial Island. Nicknamed the  Blue Island  because the island lies in the center of the Azores group of islands. Faial has three main attractions: the volcanic craters, the town of Horta, and the soft white beaches.

There are an array of exciting activities to do on this island. A couple of favorite activities amongst visitors are exploring the largest volcano in Faial, relishing the delicious local cuisine in the town of Horta, and watching the ships sail by at the marina.

Faial Island

10) Sao Jorge Island

Enjoy this Azores island vacation destination in the Atlantic known as Sao Jorge. The island boasts tall cliffs that contribute to its dynamic landscape. Unfortunately, the mountains, ravines, and cliffs have made most of the island uninhabitable, with an exception of the coast. However, the interior of the island is ideal for hiking.

Those in search of an adventure can explore the  Montoso  and  Bocas do Fogo  caves. Sao Jorge is also a foodie’s dream destination, offering local cuisine like clam dishes unique to the island. Also on offer is the tangy unpasteurized cheese produced with milk from the island’s grass-fed cows. You can’t get more organic than that.

sao jorge island

11) Ilha de Armona

Portugal’s Algarve region is wildly popular with tourists, but those who keep their ear to the ground might know about the island of Armona. This island off of Portugal’s coast is easily accessible by ferry, but it is completely car-free and feels worlds apart from the Portugal mainland.

With four miles of sandy, pristine beaches, Armona is a dream destination for those who want sun, sand, sea, and serenity. Armona remains true to its authentic atmosphere and aesthetic. With cobblestone streets and Moorish architecture, the island of Armona is off the beaten track and ideal for downtime and relaxation.

12) Ilha da Culatra

If you’re in the Algarve region, hop on a ferry from Olhão or Faro and take a short ride to the Ilha da Culatra. The beaches on this slice of heaven are phenomenal and fairly quiet. The island of Ilha da Culatra is divided into three parts: Culatra, Farol, and Hângares.

There is a fully functioning fishing village on the island, so expect plenty of fresh seafood straight from the ocean to your plate. But if lazing around on the beaches of this island and eating fresh seafood doesn’t cut it for you – hiking is a top activity. Additionally, the coast is an excellent spot for snorkeling.

13) Graciosa

Among the most northern islands of the Azores, Graciosa is the perfect Portugal island vacation spot. The island offers a unique blend of natural surroundings and enchanting rocky beaches. Not only is the island surrounded by dreamy blue seas, but also by its basalt walls. Among the beaches, you cannot miss out on  Termas do Carapacho , where you will find a couple of thermal pools.

Graciosa is one of the best Azores islands because it exudes an atmosphere of serenity and relaxation that is hypnotic. And despite being one of the smaller islands, Graciosa is packed with plenty of things to see. Hikers can enjoy a trip to Caldeira, the crater of an ancient volcano that has become a Regional Natural Monument. At the same time, travelers can enjoy the picturesque village of  Santa Cruz da Graciosa .

14) Santa Maria

Santa Maria is an unspoiled gem of nature, gifted with breathtaking beaches and outstanding natural beauty. Known as the  Island of the Sun , it has an expanse of bright red soil best seen at sunset. Santa Maria is the perfect place to go for a holiday to realign your center and enjoy a moment of peace.

Visit the  Church of Nossa Senhora da Purificação , where splendid local murals can be viewed. Nearby Santa Maria lies  Pico Alto , the highest point on the island, which provides majestic panoramic views. In Santa Maria’s largest village,  Vila do Porto , stands the  Forte de São Brás . The cannons here are reminders of the islands’ interesting and tumultuous history of fighting off pirates.

Tour Activity Level

The activity level for this tour:

You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.

You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.

You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

The Top Islands to Visit in Portugal

portugal island tour

 Chris VR / TripSavvy

While the mainland gets plenty of attention from visitors to Portugal , the country’s collection of islands is more of an undiscovered gem. Between the archipelagos of Madeira (300 miles off the coast of Africa) and the Azores (850 miles west of mainland Portugal), nearly a dozen inhabited islands offer unique and rewarding experiences for visitors.

The big question, then, is which ones are best? Here are five of the top Portuguese islands to visit.

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

The largest island of the Azores, São Miguel is also home to the archipelago's only major airport and cruise ship terminal. Both are located in Ponta Delgada, the capital and biggest city, so almost all tourists will start their visit there.

There are enough shops, restaurants, gardens, and other attractions in pretty Ponta Delgada to entertain visitors for a day or two, but the best of the 40- by 10-mile island lies elsewhere.

Bus tours are available, but unless you’re very short of time, renting a car or motor scooter is more rewarding. As with mainland Europe, vehicles drive on the right, and almost all roads are paved and in good condition. Be aware, however, that most are narrow and winding, and many rental cars will have a manual/stick transmission.

São Miguel is known locally as the “green island,” and it’s easy to see why. The volcanic soil and temperate climate make for lush forests and hillsides, and when combined with the mountains in the interior of the island, stunning views are everywhere.

One of the best is at Vista do Rei, overlooking the green and blue lagoons of Sete Cidades. As an added bonus, the abandoned five-star Hotel Monte Palace sits alongside, available to (carefully) explore to anyone with sturdy shoes and a sense of adventure.

There are plenty of good, inexpensive accommodation options, both in Ponta Delgada and many other towns and villages on the island. Good, inexpensive seafood and wine are available everywhere, but the most memorable meal of your trip to São Miguel is likely to be the “Cozido das Furnas”.

This version of the famous Portuguese stew is cooked, quite literally, by a volcano! Each day, locals bury pots of the stew in the hot ground, pulling it out again, fully cooked, at noon. Head to Restaurante Tony's in Furnas to try it out.

Speaking of geothermal activity, bathing in hot springs is another popular pastime on São Miguel. Several naturally-heated baths and pools can be found on the island, including one underneath a waterfall. It’s a must-do activity while you’re there.

Santa Maria

While every Azorean island has its share of beaches, most are black and quite rocky—unless you head to Santa Maria. The southernmost island in the Azores has the whitest sand, warmest water, and driest climate in the archipelago, making it an appealing beach holiday destination .

Most visitors choose to stay in Almagreira, alongside the popular Praia Formosa (Formosa Beach). Lush green hills run down to this long stretch of white sand, which given its location, has plenty of wave action to keep the surfers happy.

Along with other water sports like jet-skiing and kayaking, there are gentler activities like checking out the abundant nearby rock pools, and even a ruined 16th-century fort in the middle of the beach to give history buffs something to look at in between working on their suntans.

Given the island’s small size (37 square miles), it’s easy to explore when you want a break from the beach. Along with many nature parks and hiking trails, it’s worth checking seeing a few of the distinctive chimneys on the local houses, since they’re generally quite different from building to building, with many being ornately designed and decorated.

Getting to Santa Maria is straightforward, with flights from both mainland Portugal, and the Azores’ main airport on São Miguel. During summer months (mid-May to mid-September), it’s also possible to take a ferry between São Miguel and Santa Maria. The trip takes roughly three hours each way but doesn’t run every day.

It’s impossible to mention Pico without talking about the volcano that gives the island its name. Ponta do Pico is the highest mountain in Portugal, rising 7,700 feet above the nearby Atlantic, and it dominates the view from anywhere else on the island.

Keen hikers can climb to the summit in around four hours, and return in three, making for a strenuous but manageable day trip. Even more than elsewhere in the Azores, though, the weather is very changeable around the mountain—so don’t expect conditions at the bottom to be the same at the top, and expect plans to have to change at a moment’s notice!

It’s been three centuries since Pico last erupted, and historic lava flows have turned into fertile volcanic soil that makes the island particularly good for viticulture. Verdelho wine from Pico was exported throughout mainland Europe until the 19 th century and has made a comeback in recent years. The Museu do Vinho is a good place to learn more about Pico’s wine history, and it can also arrange tasting tours.

Other than scaling a volcano, there are plenty of other things to do on the Azores’ second-largest island. From exploring the three-mile lava cave Gruta das Torres to going on whale-watching tours (April to October is the best time to see them), plus dozens of good spots to hike and swim, it’s easy to fill up a few days on Pico.

You can fly there from São Miguel, or take ferries from neighboring islands. Accommodation becomes more expensive and fills up quickly in summer months, so book early or plan your trip for shoulder season.

Flores means “flowers” in Portuguese, and rarely was a place so appropriately named. Even jaded Azoreans from other islands comment on the unspoiled natural surroundings, which was made a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2009.

Located in the far west of the Azores archipelago, the 55 square mile island is covered with volcanic craters, seven of which have turned into attractive lakes over the millennia. These are must-see attractions while in Flores, the blue of the water offset by the green mountainsides and splashes of color from the abundant flowers that give the island its name.

Other geographic highlights include Rocha dos Bordões, dozens of basalt pillars that resemble a pipe organ, and the Monchique Islet, a distinctive black rock that marks the westernmost point of Portugal (and by some arguments, Europe).

Most tourist activities center around making the most of Flores’ natural beauty, with hiking, scuba diving, sailing, and canyoning being particularly popular. As with other islands in the Azores, whale watching is also available in-season.

Ocean and river fishing is a popular pastime for both locals and visitors alike, along with bird-watching—along with local species, several types of migratory bird stop off in Flores on their journey from the Americas.

It’s a calm, old-fashioned part of the world, where life moves at a slower pace. If you’re looking for a relaxing vacation, you can do a lot worse than spending a few days in Flores.

SATA/Air Azores flies regularly between Flores and São Miguel, although the unpredictable Atlantic weather means around a third of flights end up being canceled. For this reason, Flores is better visited towards the start of your trip, rather than at the end.

Ferries run to nearby Corvo but are too long and infrequent to other islands to be practical for most tourists.

Madeira Island

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

Visited by around a million people a year, Madeira sees about twice as many visitors as the Azores and is one of Europe’s leading island destinations . Most of that activity is concentrated on the 268 square mile Madeira Island, which houses almost all of the archipelago’s permanent population.

Blessed with a mild climate year-round (daily temperatures average between 68 F and 80 F), Madeira is a nature lover's delight. An ingenious system of stone and concrete aqueducts delivers water for flowers and crops across the island, and the maintenance paths for those waterways make for perfect hiking trails to otherwise-inaccessible areas. The dense forests of the northern valleys are home to large native trees, which in turn provide shelter for many native and migratory birds.

Madeira is also a great place for a road trip, with well-paved, winding coastal roads affording exceptional views everywhere on the island. Those roads are steep, though, so be sure to rent a car with enough power to handle the hills! Gas stations aren’t as frequent as you might like, so fill up when you get a chance.

Along with horse riding, paragliding, and several golf courses, Madeira offers many water-based activities. Sailing, big game fishing, and kayaking are all easily accessible, and the snorkeling and scuba diving is particularly good due to the clear waters and abundant sea life.

For those after a less-strenuous vacation, there are plenty of beaches and public bathing spots across the island. Don’t expect miles of white or golden sand, however—the volcanic history of Madeira means the sand is naturally gray or black. A few artificially-constructed beaches have imported lighter sand, however, if that’s your preference.

If you can get the timing right, try to take in the New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Funchal harbor. It set a world record for the largest fireworks display in the world back in 2007 and has been just as impressive in the years since.

Madeira’s food and drink are rightly famous, with many products being widely exported—but of course, it always tastes better when it hasn’t had to travel over an ocean to get to you! Be sure to try out Madeira fortified wine, honey cake, and rum at a minimum, before starting on the dozens of other lesser-known options. The black scabbardfish is a local delicacy, while the tuna, octopus, and shellfish such as limpets, are particularly good there.

Several European airlines fly to Madeira, including many budget carriers. Cruise ships also regularly stop at the terminal in Funchal, and for most of the year, there’s a car and passenger ferry for the two-hour journey to Madeira’s other inhabited island, Porto Santo.

The Berlengas Islands, Portugal - A day trip to Berlenga Grande

Jutting out of the Atlantic Ocean, 10km west of the fishing town of Peniche, are the craggy and windswept Berlengas Islands.

The islands may appear barren and inhospitable, but the nutrient-rich sea waters and sheltered cliffs are teeming with marine and birdlife. This diverse and thriving ecosystem is protected by the Reserva Natural da Berlengas.

Berlenga Grande harbour

The sheltered harbour and windswept landscape of Berlenga Grande

The Berlengas Islands are frequently savaged by powerful storms, and historically the rocky islands were notorious for shipwrecks. A 16th-century monastery was even constructed on the largest island, Berlenga Grande, to rescue shipwrecked sailors, but was soon abandoned due to pirate raids.

Later the São João Baptista Fort was built to guard the Portuguese seas, and today this fort is regarded as one of the most scenic forts in all of Portugal. This combination of history, dramatic natural scenery and extensive wildlife, makes the Berlengas Islands a fascinating and popular tourist destination. Related articles: Peniche tourist guide

Boat tours to the Berlengas Islands

It is only possible to travel to the Berlengas Islands via a boat tour or ferry, some of the best tours provided by GetYourGuide include: • Day tour to the Berlengas islands from Lisbon including kayaking and snorkelling • Berlengas Islands day trip departing from Peniche harbour • Sightseeing Tour of Berlenga Grande – from Lisbon

The Berlengas Islands for tourists

As a tourist, it is possible to visit the largest of the Berlengas Islands, Berlenga Grande, as a day trip from Peniche.

A typical day trip to Berlenga Grande includes a boat tour of the cliff formations, a visit to the São João Baptista fort, a hike through the island's interior, bird watching, snorkelling, and opportunities for relaxing on the beach. Departing from the harbour in Berlenga Grande are glass-bottomed boat tours, which explore the caves, grottos, and view the extensive marine life.

The ferry ride from Peniche to Berlenga Grande is also very scenic, as the route follows the craggy Peniche coastline, and passes the Cape Carvoeiro headland and the Nau dos Corvos rock formation.

The day trip to Berlenga Grande is considered as one of the highlights of the Peniche region, and should be visited if you get the opportunity. Warning: The Berlengas Islands are exposed to the huge waves of the Atlantic Ocean; this is not a day trip for you if you are susceptible to seasickness.

Below is an interactive map for a typical day trip to Berlenga Grande. The yellow route shows the common tourist trail (3.8km) which begins at the harbour, visits the São João Baptista Fort, the Cova do Sono viewpoint, the lighthouse and the Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro beach. The green line is the Ilha Velha footpath (1.4km), which hikes around the much quiet northern side of the island. The blue line is the route of the small boat tours and the blue pins mark the prominent coastal features.

There is a restaurant on the island (the Mar and Sol), but it is always advisable to bring your own water and food, as can get busy in the peak months. Berlenga Grande is part of the Arquipélago das Berlengas Nature Reserve, so visitors are encouraged to only follow the set paths, and not cause damage by wandering into the protected areas.

A day trip to Berlenga Grande is only suitable for physically fit and mobile visitors, as some of the footpaths are very worn and there are lots of hills to climb.

Travel to the Berlengas Islands

All of the ferries to the Berlengas Islands depart from Peniche harbour, and along the harbour walkway are the ticket offices for all of the tour companies. A standard ferry journey takes 45 minutes, and a return ticket costs €20 (€12 for one way). The more exciting and faster speedboat costs €23 for a return, with the journey time is reduced to just 20 minutes. Berlenga Grande is the only island with a sheltered harbour and allows visitors.

Top Tip: When departing from Peniche, sit on the right side of the boat, as this side faces the dramatic cliffs of the Peniche headland

There are multiple tour companies with regular boat services to Berlenga Grande, and a selection of the companies include: https://viamar-berlenga.com/en/tickets/ http://www.feelingberlenga.pt/en/ https://julius-berlenga.com.pt/viagem/ (links open new tabs) During the summer, always book tickets in advance or early in the day, as the trips are very popular and there is a limited number of seats on the boats. In the autumn and spring, there can be frequent cancellations due to the weather, and in the winter many tour companies close for the entire season.

The São João Baptista Fort

The São João Baptista Fort lies on the sheltered side of the Berlenga Grande and was constructed in the 17th century to prevent a staging area for seaborne assault along the western coastline of Portugal.

This little fort is one of the most visually striking buildings in Portugal, rising up from the shallow turquoise sea waters and connected to the island by narrow arched bridges.

The defensive prowess of this tranquil setting was most demonstrated in June 1666, when just twenty soldiers withstood a siege of 16 Spanish warships and over 2,000 men. The fort was only abandoned when its stock of ammunition was exhausted, but the attack cost the lives of 500 Spanish sailors compared to just one Portuguese soldier.

Behind the thick walls of the fort

Today, the historic fort has been transformed into a hostel and is open to the public to explore. As one of the most atmospheric locations to stay in Portugal, it is an absolute bargain at €22/€20 (high/low season) per night; just don’t expect too many modern comforts.

Tourists note: So many pictures of the São João Baptista fort on the internet have been extremely enhanced, to such a stage that they are almost fake. Please do not be disappointed if the bright orange fort surrounded by turquoise waters is not what is found......

Berlengas Lighthouse (Farol Duque de Bragança)

Standing at the highest point of the island is the Farol Duque de Bragança, the Duke of Braganza lighthouse.

The light emitted from the 120m-high vantage point can be seen from more than 50km away, an impressive feat considering that the structure only uses solar power and batteries.

The lighthouse originates from the 19th century, but the complex is not open to the public.

The Farol Duque de Bragança - completely solar-powered!

The Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro beach

The Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro is the only beach on the island that is accessible and safe to swim from. The small beach is situated in a beautiful setting, nestled between two steep cliffs and offering views of the picturesque harbour.

The sea waters at the beach are crystal clear and perfect for snorkelling, although they can be surprisingly chilly. For the more adventurous kayaks can also be hired from the harbour to explore the island in more detail.

Praia da Berlenga

The Praia da Berlenga beach is a great location for snorkelling

The beach itself is named after the 16th-century monastery, which was situated above the harbour and has now been converted into a restaurant. The stones from the abandoned monastery were used to construct the São João Baptista Fort.

Glass-bottomed boat cave tours

Small tour boats provide tours of the island, and explore the cliff formations which can not be viewed from the land or accessed by the larger ferries.

The tours cost €6.00 for a 30-minute tour and visit the blue cave, Furado Grande (a natural tunnel), Elephant Rock and the Ponta da França headland.

Pedra do Elefante elephant Berlengas Islands

Elephant Rock - If you squint, you can just about see that it is an Elephant.....

On the island there is a very basic campsite managed by Peniche local council. Either side of the summer months it is very tranquil and relaxing but in the summer it is popular with overly excited Portuguese teenagers.

The limited facilities on the island means it is advisable to bring all of your supplies. To make a reservation email: [email protected]

All you need to know for your first trip to the Azores

Marlene Marques

Feb 28, 2024 • 9 min read

portugal island tour

Read on to get the most of out your first visit to the Azores, the gorgeous “Hawaii of Europe” © EyesTravelling / Shutterstock

When you first look through the airplane window and down at  the Azores , you’ll be left speechless. From this very first glimpse, you’ll understand why many call this Portuguese archipelago the “Hawaii of Europe” and the “Islands of Colors.”

Set in the middle of the Atlantic, halfway between the USA and continental Portugal , the nine major Azores islands – São Miguel, Santa Maria, Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores and Corvo – are impossible not to adore.

Expect green fields spotted with free-roaming local cattle (locally referred to as “happy cows”), and lagoons set on the mouth of extinct volcanoes. Thermal pools offer the chance for a hot dip, the warmth coming from deep within the earth, while ultra-fresh ingredients make for a uniquely savory local cuisine.

A trip to the Azores is a must-do vacation, one you’ll never forget. If you’ve never been before, read on – then get planning.

A man looks down at a crater lake in Corvo, Azores, Portugal

What is the best time to go to the Azores?

The Azores are an all-year-round destination – so your key considerations will be what you want to do, and your budget. The summer brings many visitors from the mainland, who arrive to soak up the scenery or visit relatives, making this the busiest and more expensive season.

The scene is more relaxed and cheaper in the shoulder seasons, while winter can offer challenging weather. Remember that the islands are set in the middle of the ocean and are more exposed to the winter storms that form in the Atlantic – which often affects flights (and your plans!).

Whenever you visit, prepare to face all four seasons in one day. You can wake up with sunshine and warm weather, only to take a hike up a mountain to find plunging temperatures, lashing rain and minimal visibility. Don’t leave without packing a waterproof layer, and have it in your backpack at all times.

In the summer, temperatures range from about 68–79°F (20–26°C), in the shoulder seasons from about 60–71°F (15.5–22°C), and during winter from about 53–64°F (12–18°C). Keep in mind that at different spots on these remote islands temperatures can vary widely.

Is it easy to get to the Azores?

São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores and works as a hub to reach the other eight. The Ponta Delgada airport receives international flights from the United States and Canada as well as a number of other European countries; transatlantic flights also serve Terceira. If you can’t find a nonstop flight, the easiest way to get to the Azores is from Lisbon or Porto , on Portugal’s mainland.

From São Miguel, you can get internal flights with the local airline SATA to every island in the Azores. You can also opt for SATA’s Azores Air Pass , which allows travelers to visit up to three islands at a special rate.

Another way to get around is by ferry:  Atlanticoline serves Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores and Corvo.

Be advised that your plane or boat legs may change, as the departure schedule can be disrupted by air and ocean conditions. Being flexible with your itinerary is a good idea if you plan to visit more than one island in the Azores, especially in wintertime.

A small red car drives by a bank of blue hydrangea bushes in Sete Cidades, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal

How to you get around the Azores?

Renting a car is the best way to explore these beautiful islands. With so much to see and do, having the freedom to travel at your own pace and visit more off-the-beaten-track locations is essential to making the most of your trip. Plus, renting a car allows you to easily get around the larger islands, such as São Miguel (287 sq miles), Pico (172 sq miles) or Terceira (154 sq miles).

You can even take your rented car on the ferry between some of the islands, including the Pico–Faial–São Jorge triangle. Public buses are also available on all islands except Corvo.

Once you reach your desired destination, get out and explore on foot – for the views in these islands never disappoint. Walk the dirt paths, immerse yourself in nature and be amazed by the sounds of the birds and running waterfalls, and the smell of flowers and wet vegetation.

It all depends on what you want to do. São Miguel is a great option for first-time visitors, with its wide range of activities, landscapes, and great restaurant and accommodation options. Five days should be enough time to get a good taste.

But if you want to get a true sense of the richness of this archipelago, set aside two to three weeks to hop between islands and get to know what truly distinguishes each – and why the archipelago is truly one of the most exceptional destinations in Europe.

Top things to do on the Azores

See how volcanoes have shaped the islands’ landscape and history.

You’ll know you’re atop a cluster of volcanoes when you see the dark-gray stone used in the old buildings, and the black sand on the beaches. When visiting São Miguel, you can even feel the volcanic activity on your skin: the water at iron-rich thermal springs is warmed by heat emanating from the island’s inner depths.

The same heat cooks the traditional cozido dos Açores (Azorean stew) in the Furnas area, where chefs place vegetables and meat in the earth for up to seven hours, where it emerges steaming hot and with a sulfur-y kick. Terceira and São Jorge have natural pools that are carved in stone by the rough Atlantic and simultaneously heated by the volcanic rock.

In Faial, the underwater  Vulcão dos Capelinhos  erupted in the 1950s – an event that caused half the island’s population to flee. An interpretative center near the site of the eruption gives context on the ongoing volcanic activity in and around the Azores.

Hike for days

If you want to immerse yourself in nature and experience the rawness of gorgeous landscapes, you’re in luck. All the islands have hiking trails that bring you deep into their wild heart, revealing lagoons formed inside extinct volcanoes or waterfalls that cascade from the top of the mountains.

On the island of the same name,  Mt Pico  is another must-see place in the Azores. As the highest point in Portugal, it’s a challenging climb. But the unforgettable view from the top on a clear day is well worth the effort.

While in Pico, visit the local vineyards that are part of a landscape that’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Gaze out at the ocean as you enjoy a glass of wine – you might spot a pod of playful dolphins or even giant whales.

Combine a whale-watching trip with a visit to a tea factory

Exploring outdoors is far from the only activity in the Azores. On São Miguel, you can join a whale-watching cruise, visit cheese factories, see spiky fruit grow at  pineapple plantations or spend an hour or two at the famous  Gorreana Tea Factory , the oldest (and arguably only) tea plantation in Europe. Staff members offer free tours of the factory and museum, which feature plenty of vintage machinery (some still in use); toast to your visit with a cup at the end of the tour.

My favorite thing to do in the Azores

If your goal is to escape and disconnect from the world, you’ll find that tranquility in the Azorean fajãs , small coastal villages next to large cliffs.

I recommend the difficult-to-access but enchanting Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo in São Jorge. You can get there on foot by following the Caldeira de Santo Cristo Trail , which starts in Serra do Topo. The descent gradually reveals the small town, its houses, the church and the large lagoon stretching near the sea. You can also arrive by quad bike, starting from Fajã dos Cubres; you can pre-arrange a trip with your accommodation.

Once in Fajã de Santo Cristo, cell phone and internet connections are almost non-existent, leaving no choice but to unplug and slow down. This is the ideal place to relax, catch up on your reading, discover the lagoon by kayak or taste the clams served at O Borges, the oldest restaurant in this location.

How much money do I need in the Azores?

The Azores is a destination for all types of travelers, with everything from five-star hotels to local homestays. You can find lodging, food options and island tours to suit all budgets. Your car rental will likely be your biggest expense, especially if you are traveling in high season; try to plan ahead and make your reservations as soon as possible.

These are the average daily costs you can expect:

  • Four-star hotel room for two: from €150
  • Dormitory room in a hostel: from €45
  • Self-catering apartment: from €100
  • Car rental: from €35 per day for a small car
  • Furnas stew for two: €30
  • Beer: €1.50
  • Entrance to hot springs: €8

Remember to interact with nature safely

Exploring the various volcanic craters and lagoons hidden in the islands’ interiors is one of the best experiences you can have in the Azores. Keep in mind that these extraordinary natural ecosystems should be approached with great care.

Respect the local landscape by visiting in a way that doesn’t disturb the animals or damage any plants; the easiest way to do this is by sticking to marked trails. Many are there to protect vegetation and prevent soil erosion, but also for your safety, as they avoid unstable or slippery ground.

Also, as much as the lagoons seem like the perfect opportunity for a cooling dip, most are unsuitable for bathing or swimming for safety reasons. Always follow the safety signs displayed at each lagoon.

Finally, be aware that weather conditions can change from one moment to the next, especially in higher areas. Check the forecast before venturing out on a long trail to ensure you’re not caught in a precarious position mid-hike.

What to pack when visiting the Azores

Given the variable weather and outdoor-adventure possibilities in the Azores, we recommend bringing a light rain jacket, a breathable fleece layer you can take on and off on the go, and waterproof trekking boots and poles. You’ll want a good backpack to carry all this with you as you get out and about in this magical archipelago.

The sunny Calheta enchants with its golden sandy beaches and marina, providing a perfect spot for relaxation and water sports. The Laurisilva forest offers lush, green landscapes and a haven for hikers and nature lovers.

Do you need a car in Madeira?

Yes — Madeira is doable without a car, especially if you book a Madeira day trip departing from Funchal to get you to any of the more off-the-beaten-trail places.

portugal island tour

There are also public buses that can get you to various points around the island, but it can be much harder to get to specific spots with public transportation.

You need to either rent a car or take a tour to explore Madeira’s most stunning sites.

Is driving difficult in Madeira?

Yes and No  — driving in Madeira can vary depending on your driving experience and comfort with specific conditions.

Driving in Madeira might be tough if you’re a bit nervous behind the wheel. The roads are curvy and really steep, and most cars have manual gears, which can be tricky on hills.

Also, many tourists drive around, so accidents can (and do) happen. Parking can be a real headache because so many cars are everywhere.

What people love about portugal tours.

We had a fantastic time. Exploring the island through jeep tour and kayaking was exhilarating. The whale watching and local food experiences were delightful, and the guides were truly local and knowledgeable. This tour was an unforgettable journey, would take it again, thank yuou.
We had a great group. Itinerary was just what I was looking for. Everyone could choose what they wanted to do during the day.
The hikes and info were great, even though some last minute changes were necessary due to trail closures. We had a fun, varied group of 13 and the logistics all worked well. The only disappointment was Hotel Zenite on Terceira Island - it was an aging hotel with poor service and should be replaced with a different hotel in the same area.

Could have pulled this off by myself and saved approximately $2,500. Boat trip needs to include Duro Valley for this price.

GPT-4 is better than humans at financial forecasting, new study shows

  • OpenAI's GPT-4 is better than humans at analyzing financial statements and making forecasts, according to a new study.
  • "Even without any narrative or industry-specific information, the LLM outperforms financial analysts in its ability to predict earnings changes," the study found.
  • Trading strategies based on GPT-4 also delivered more profitable results than the stock market.

Insider Today

OpenAI's GPT-4 proved to be a better financial analyst than humans, according to a new study.

The findings could upend the financial services industry that, like other business sectors, is racing to adopt generative AI technologies.

According to the study conducted by the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, the large language model did a better job of analyzing financial statements and making predictions based on those statements.

"Even without any narrative or industry-specific information, the LLM outperforms financial analysts in its ability to predict earnings changes," the study said. "The LLM exhibits a relative advantage over human analysts in situations when the analysts tend to struggle."

The study utilized "chain-of-thought" prompts that directed GPT-4 to identify trends in financial statements and calculate different financial ratios. From there, the large language model analyzed the information and predicted future earnings results.

"When we use the chain of thought prompt to emulate human reasoning, we find that GPT achieves an accuracy of 60%, which is remarkably higher than that achieved by the analysts," the study said. The human analysts were closer to the low 50% range with regard to prediction accuracy.

The large language models' ability to recognize financial patterns and business concepts with incomplete information suggests that the technology should play a key role in financial decision-making going forward, according to the study's authors.

Finally, the study found that applying GPT-4's financial acumen to trading strategies produced more profitable trading, with higher share ratios and alpha that ultimately beat the stock market.

"We find that the long-short strategy based on GPT forecasts outperforms the market and generates significant alphas and Sharpe ratios," the study said.
