Enjoy more than a century of sports history in the ultramodern Philips Stadium, in the Frederiklaan, Eindhoven. This is where PSV once started. The stadium tour takes you along the pitch - “But don’t touch the grass! It’s illegal”, says an enthusiastic visitor -, the players’ tunnel, and the dressing rooms, but you also get to see special places, such as the press centre, the VIP box, and the sponsors’ floor. And, after listening to all the great anecdotes about PSV, told by the “super friendly guide”, you will discover in the PSV Museum the rich history of what is probably the Netherlands’ most sociable top club.

Perfect to combine! After you’ve seen where great players such as Rómari…

Perfect to combine! After you’ve seen where great players such as Rómario, Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooij, and Memphis changed their clothes, and you’ve interactively experienced the “Red/White” inside the PSV Museum. In short: the entire family will surely enjoy the stadium, or, as this guest put it: “It was great to see the ins and outs of the stadium [...] The children thought it was great fun! The museum was also nice! An amazing experience, even if you aren’t a football fan

Because of its location, a visit to the stadium can ideally be combined with a visit to Eindhoven: between the city center and Strijp-S: the creative hotspot of Eindhoven. In the Philips Museum you will learn everything about the electronics giant that once stood at the cradle of PSV, but you’re also so close to the beautifully located training complex of PSV: PSV Campus De Herdgang.

Philips Stadion

Philips Stadion

Club: PSV Eindhoven | Opening: 1913 | Capacity: 35,000 seats

History and description

Philips Stadion has been the home of PSV Eindhoven since the club’s foundation in 1913. It officially opened on 13 August 1913 with a kick-off by the 8-year-old Frits Philips, son of Philips Electronics founder Anton Philips and future livelong PSV fan.

Philips Stadion was initially a bare pitch and it took until 1916 for the first wooden stand to be built. In the following decades, the stadium got gradually expanded, resulting in a capacity of about 22,000 in the post-War period.

The stadium got almost entirely rebuilt between 1969 and 1977, which resulted in a completely enclosed and covered stadium with a capacity of 26,500 places.

The new main stand was the last to be completed in 1977, but also the first to get rebuilt again when in 1988 cracks in the concrete were found. The new two-tiered main stand had ample corporate facilities and was considered to be the most modern of the Netherlands at that time.

In the next six years, works continued with the reconstruction of the two stands at the ends, and finally with the other side of the stadium.

Philips Stadion got selected as one of the playing venues of the Euro 2000 tournament, during which it hosted three first round group matches.

The stadium counted with a capacity of just over 30,000 at that time, which later got increased when the upper tiers on the southern side got linked up.

In 2006, Philips Stadion hosted the UEFA Cup final between Sevilla and Middlesbrough (4-0).

How to get to Philips Stadion

Philips Stadion is located on the edge of Eindhoven’s city centre, which means it is only a 5 to 10-minute walk from Eindhoven’s main shopping areas and central train station.

Exit the train station on the city centre side, turn right, and follow the avenue until the stadium shows up in front of you.

If arriving by car, find your way to Eindhoven’s city centre. Most city centre car parks are within walking distance of the stadium.

If coming from Eindhoven Airport, take bus 401 to the central train station and get off at stop Philips Stadion. The ride takes about 20 minutes.

Address: Frederiklaan 10a, 5616 NH Eindhoven

Eat, drink, and sleep near Philips Stadion

The central location of the Philips Stadion makes that there are plenty of bars and restaurants at short walking distance in Eindhoven’s city centre.

Eindhoven’s nightlife area around Stratumseind is located on the southern edge of the centre at a 15-minute walk from the stadium. More bars and restaurants can be found around the Kleine Berg, Markt, or central station area, all even closer to the stadium.

Similarly, you can pick any of the hotels in Eindhoven’s centre as these are all at walking distance of the stadium. Click here for an overview of hotels close to the Philips Stadion.

PSV Tickets

Tickets for PSV matches can be bought online , or at the FANworld PSV shop at the stadium.

PSV offer special matchday packages for foreigners, that include a match ticket, gift voucher for the PSV shop, and a food or drink gift voucher for in the stadium, but are more expensive than a regular ticket. Bookings can be made by emailing  [email protected] .

Tickets for regular matches range in prices from €28.00 for a seat at one of the ends to €67.00 for a central seat at one of the long sides. Prices are slightly increased for a few high-profile matches.

An inseparable story Of a jewel and its case

With more than 35,000 season ticket holders each season, the Parc des Princes is a stadium resolutely dedicated to football. The Paris Saint-Germain brand and its logo are now inscribed in the setting of the stadium where the Rouge et Bleu have played more than 1,000 official matches since the first of them, on November 10, 1973, against Red Star. The following summer, after its accession to the First Division, the young PSG, created four years earlier, will become the resident club of this historic site of Parisian sport, inaugurated in 1897 in the form of a velodrome. Much later, in 1972, the enclosure will take on its current contours, imagined by the architect Roger Taillibert.

The Stadium Tour is open during school holidays, every weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last departure) and on Friday, except on matchday.

From July 10 to August 12, 2024 , the Parc des Princes will be the scene of numerous sporting events on the occasion of the Olympic Games . Consequently, visits will be closed during this period. Anticipate by booking your experience now!

Nizhny Novgorod: Soviet ‘closed city’ teems with tourists

  • Copy Link copied

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia (AP) — It’s hard to fathom for 21-year-old Valeria Kashnikova as she delivers pizzas to tables jammed with Swedes, Croats, and Argentines that her Russian city was closed to foreigners for almost 60 years during the Soviet Union era.

“I don’t know much about that time,” said Kashnikova, a waitress at Pronto Pizza e Pasta. “Right now we have a lot of people coming here for soccer, but they also get interested in our food, our culture and what we think.”

And the history.

The venue for six World Cup matches, Nizhny Novgorod was known as Gorky from 1932 until 1990: a so-called “closed city” located 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of Moscow where dissident physicist and 1975 Nobel Prize winner Andrei Sakharov was held under house arrest. The city was entirely closed to foreigners, a place where Sakharov was kept from giving interviews or spreading anti-Soviet ideas.

Sakharov was confined for seven years to a modest apartment around Gagarina Prospekt, an avenue about a 25-minute drive from the new World Cup stadium located at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers. The apartment block’s uneven brickwork and missing mortar contrast sharply with the gleaming blue and white soccer palace that Russian media say cost about 17.9 billion rubles ($283 million).

Sakharov’s apartment is a museum now, and it’s hard to find. Only a small sign marks the apartment, and crumbling concrete steps lead to the entrance.

The apartment has been left almost exactly as it was when the 30 KGB agents made sure that Sakharov — the designer of the Soviet hydrogen bomb — had limited contact with other dissidents.

The most compelling artifact is a white, rotary-dial telephone that was installed for just one call — so Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev could phone and tell Sakharov his exile had ended and he was free to move back to Moscow, where he died in 1989. There’s also Sakharov’s writing table with one leg held in place with what appears to be twisted string — said to be Sakharov’s own repair job.

Museum literature and a tour guide explain how Sakharov was stunned by the might of a Soviet H-bomb test in 1955. He became the Soviet Union’s most important scientist, and at the same time the shock of his own thermonuclear creation led him to work for causes connected to world peace and human rights.

Eventually that got him placed in exile in Gorky, which was named for Maxim Gorky, a Russian and Soviet writer born in Nizhny Novgorod. His family home is also a museum in town, along with a literature museum dedicated to him.

Kashnikova, the young waitress, blushed and acknowledged that — like many in her generation, born after the Soviet Union was dissolved on Dec. 26, 1991 — she knew almost nothing of Sakharov. She dug into her smartphone to search for the name and his detention in the 1980s. It rang a bell, but just barely.

“It’s hard to imagine that time for me,” said Anastasia Shutova, a 21-year-old university student working as a volunteer in a Nizhny hotel — giving out tourist information, maps, and history lessons about her city.

Compared to St. Petersburg or Moscow, Nizhny gets few tourists under normal conditions. And it saw even fewer in Soviet times. It’s best known as an industrial and scientific center and was the heart of Soviet military production during World War II. It was also a prime target of Hitler’s Luftwaffe.

But the World Cup has changed the tourist numbers, putting the focus on a provincial city that locals believe deserves more attention.

Nizhny Novgorod has its own Kremlin that is connected to Gorky Square — site of a towering Gorky statue — by Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, a street that teems on match days with painted faces, flags, and feverish chanting.

“You don’t see many people from other countries here, unless there’s an event like this,” Shutova said. “It’s interesting to have people asking questions so we can see how our city is seen, or how we are seen.”
