The UAE has a rich natural environment offering a unique mix of diverse topography. The UAE is largely an arid land with vast sand deserts but is also characterised by sand dunes, oases, mountains, valleys, beaches, mangroves and salt plains. Every characteristic provides home to varied flora and fauna. This diversity attracts visitors to the UAE.

The UAE has more than 5,036.24 square kilometres of protected areas. This is equivalent to 6.02 per cent of the total area of the country. Some of these natural reserves are:

  • Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve and Al Yasat Marine Protected Area in the emirate of Abu Dhabi
  • Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve in the emirate of Dubai
  • Wadi Al Helou, Meliha and Wasit nature reserve in the emirate of Sharjah.

There are many ways to explore the local flora and fauna. The options are extensive; from going on desert safaris to spot the Arabian Oryx to hiking up the mountains to catch a glimpse of birds and even camping in the desert to spot the nocturnal beings.

Ecotours can be arranged through dedicated environmental groups, such as Emirates Nature -WWF   and Emirates Environmental Group along with private tour operators and hotels.

A rich marine life and breathtaking underwater seascapes also attract snorkelers and scuba divers. Diving enthusiasts will particularly love Martini Rock off the coast of Fujairah.

Family Travel in the Middle East

The UAE’s best eco-tourism sites to experience in 2023

“No one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced.”

David Attenborough

UAE Eco tourism

We welcome guest writer Shea Wittig, a sustainable professional, eco-writer and global citizen with a relentless wanderlust spirit. She has lived in Australia, England and the Middle East and her love for travelling to new and exotic locations has fueled her dedication to share ways to live and travel more sustainably.

She is most happy when exploring the wonders of the world with her young family, supporting businesses with an ethical ethos and eating chocolate (Fair Trade, of course!). Y ou can connect with Shea at her personal blog Conversations with My Sister and on Instagram .

Ecotourism, biodiversity and nature conservation might not be your immediate thought when exploring the United Arab Emirates (UAE), due to the glitz and glamour of the cosmopolitan cities portrayed on the covers of glossy campaigns.

However, with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) launching The UAE National Ecotourism Project , across all seven Emirates, this is all about to change.

The desert is unmistakably an extreme environment yet, is still home to a diverse range of flora and fauna stretching across land, air and underwater. There are 43 protected areas in the UAE spanning 14% of the country and a selection of these are open to the public. Many are free to visit and all of them provide visitors with unique experiences and, perhaps more importantly, the opportunity to surround yourself with elements of the natural world.

Bird watching at Al Wathba Wetlands

So, what can you expect to find when you dig a bit deeper into the spirit of the UAE?

People of all ages are invited to participate in the releasing of endangered Hawksbill turtles , wander around the prime habitat of the flamingos , kayak or ride in an eco-donut around the wetlands , snorkel in the ocean , explore a UNESCO oasis and head out to the sand dunes. These are all outdoor activities which are ideal to organise during the cooler months.

Heading indoors and visiting The Falcon Hospital , The Green Planet and Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo are best saved for the summer months when high temperatures make it uncomfortable to be outside.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these.

Outdoor experiences to enjoy in the cooler months

Releasing hawksbill turtles.

Abu Dhabi & Dubai

Seeing sea turtles released in the UAE

The UAE is home to the Hawksbill Turtle , a marine animal which is listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Special attention is focused on areas where turtles are known to return with extra precautions, awareness and education a high priority to ensure the best possible safety during nesting season.

One such protected area, which is open to the public, is the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary , a 2,002h area listed as a RAMSAR Wetlands of International Importance. Included within the area is the Ghantoot Marine Reserve.  Major Ali Saqr Sultan Al Suwaidi, President of the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG) and his team monitor and protect nesting turtles and their incubating eggs, while providing the opportunity for the people of all ages to interact free of charge and have hands-on experience releasing the turtle hatchlings.

The passion Major Ali Saqr Sultan Al Suwaidi has for preserving the natural environment and educating youth of its value and importance is evident through the short presentation he gives on arrival to the sanctuary. Visitors are then invited to assist with weighing, measuring and recording the vitals of the hatchlings before being escorted to the beach, just on sunset, to assist in their safe release at the water’s edge.

Turtle Release 03

Turtle season in the UAE is expected between the months of May to September and detailed information on successful turtle nesting and the opportunity to participate with the hatchling release can be found on the EMEG social media pages on Facebook and Instagram . Contacting by private message on these platforms is most reliable.

The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project provides another opportunity to see marine turtles up close with a viewing area of the rehabilitated turtles located within Madinat Jumeirah . The group have successfully released 1300 turtles which have been in their care, as of May 2017. You can learn more at their Facebook page  and read our review of what to expect at Madinat Jumeirah .

FLAMINGO WATCHING

Flamingo watching at Abu Dhabi's Al Wathba Reserve

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is a perfect example of the Environmental Agency Abu Dhabi’s (EAD) commitment to provide assessable access to conservation areas so as many people as possible are able to enjoy the natural wonders.

The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is another RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance.  It is home to more than 250 species of birds, insects and small reptiles, although perhaps the biggest drawcard is the 4,000 migratory flamingos which gather annually in the shallow waters.

The largest numbers flock to the wetland from the Autumn to the Spring and a viewing area has been constructed on the fringe of the waterway providing the perfect shelter to sit, with a picnic and set of binoculars, to watch the graceful birds in their natural habitat.

Flamingo spotting from the hides at Al Wathba Wetlands

Visits to the five square kilometre area, which is Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, begins with a short and informative presentation which provides the opportunity to learn a little bit more about the abundant wetland ecosystem.

After participating in the information session guests are left to meander along either the 1.5km or 3km circuit at their own pace, with a reserve field guide to use along the way. Small buggies are available on site which is ideal for those who struggle to walk for long stretches of time, however, the designated paths around the area allow easy access.

Al Wathba Wetlands buggies for those less able to walk

Visiting hours are limited to Thursdays and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm with 2pm being the last entry time. Visiting the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is free of charge and the restricted times are due to the ongoing balance of protecting the natural ecosystem and providing the opportunity for visitors to benefit from the tranquil atmosphere the wetlands create.

More information can be found on the EAD website .

Entry to Al Wathba Wetlands

You might be surprised to learn just how much time people spend on the water considering the UAE is initially recognised as a nation surrounded by endless deserts and towering sand dunes.

Seasoned travellers understand the best way to experience a country is to behave like locals and, let me assure you, in a country blanketed by powerful heat during the summer, the locals gather around the water at every opportunity. Water sports are a favourite pastime and for those who enjoy combining recreation activities with nature experiences, a visit to the Eastern Mangroves wetland reserve is a definite must.

Eastern Mangroves

There are organised tours you can join where experienced guides will educate and answer questions along the way – the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency has provided a list of respected and well-established operators here . Kayaking is another popular mode of transport however, if you are looking for something a little bit a different, hiring your own Eco Donut to explore the Eastern Mangrove Nature Park, is a fun option.

The Eco Donuts are operated 100% off-grid, powered by the solar panels positioned on the roof and are easily manoeuvred by the most novice of seamen – including children! They are available for hire in an area where motorised boats aren’t permitted, making the adventure incredibly safe for all ages. Onboard you will find designated space to store snacks and beverages for an onboard picnic or, you can park at one of the jetties along the way where you can sit, or explore, a little more on foot.

Eco donut boats are a fun way to see the Eastern Mangroves National Park in Abu Dhabi

The Eco Donuts comfortably seat 6 people and are available for hire for 30 minutes to 2 hours. More information can be found on their website .  (Also keep your eye out for online specials and vouchers which make the adventure even more affordable.)

Indoor experiences to enjoy in the warmer months, the falcon hospital.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

Tourism isn’t the driving force behind the Falcon Hospital as their primary focus is diagnosing and treating injured falcons within their state-of-the-art intensive care clinical examination rooms and operating units.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) has enjoyed many awards since its establishment in 2007 including, most recently, the 2018 Middle East Responsible Tourism Award and the 2017 World’s Responsible Tourism Award for the second consecutive year – and it is easy to see why.

The hospital is opened for organised tours which begins with a visit back through history focusing on the important role and heritage of Falconry in the Middle East. The local guide, in our case, had a friendly and interactive approach and seemed happy to share his vast knowledge as led by questions from the intimate sized crowd.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital - close inspection of one of their patients

The 2-hour tour begins in the more formal rooms and moves directly into the main examination room where you are invited to watch a simple procedure of a ‘pedicure’ or ‘feather repair’ on one of the admitted falcons. Photos are encouraged and there is even an opportunity for an obligatory hold of one of the majestic animals. The tour includes both indoor and outdoor holding areas as well as the secluded moulting rooms. At the time of our visit, there were 200 falcons hospitalised on the grounds with 1800 recorded releases to date.

Due to the success of the Falcon Hospital, the facilities have also been extended to treat critically injured cats and dogs and also provide accommodation for them in a five-star pet hotel. There are also adoption and foster care options available on site.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital history and displays as part of their daily 2-hour tours

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is open to the public from Sunday to Thursday with a 10:00am or 2:00pm tour start time and bookings need to be made in advance. The Saturday tour is only available at 10:00am from October 1 st to May 31st. More information can be found on the website .

THE GREEN PLANET

The Green Planet Dubai

The Green Planet provides the opportunity to connect with elements of nature, including animal encounters, within a tropical rainforest setting. The facility is built around a magnificent tree, which is the largest indoor, man-made and life-sustaining tree in the world and houses over 3,000 plants and animals.

There are three distinct sections which begin the story starting with the forest floor, where you are met by animals such as the Archer Fish. Move on up into the mid-story layer where you might be lucky enough to hold a Python, then continue to spiral up to the top of the canopy which is directly below the spectacular bio-dome.

Along the way you might see the iconic Sloth just ‘hanging around’ and there are plenty of parrots and other fascinating birds, including my personal favourite the Toucan, to entertain and delight visitors of all ages.

The Green Planet Dubai - outside view of the building

Keep your eye out for organised educational talks through-out your visit, allow plenty of time to wander around all the display cabinets and get involved with the interactive educational equipment which all provide insight into the daily activities one could expect to find in a rainforest.

Ecosystem Education at The Green Planet Dubai

The care and knowledge shared by the award-winning and highly educated staff is second to none and it is hard to imagine any of the animals within the new-age zoo-like enclosure to be anything other than happy and content with their surrounds.

The building itself holds a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certificate due to its energy-conserving results and the consistent temperature range of 24-27 degrees Celsius, makes it a perfectly comfortable haven for visitors. Even the waterfall uses recycled water and the sound of running water adds to the effectiveness created by this ecosystem immersion.

Resident Sloth at Green Planet Dubai

The Green Planet is open from Sunday to Wednesday from 10:00am to 7:00pm and Thursday to Saturday from 10:00am-8:00pm. Tickets are sold up to one hour before closing however, I would recommend you allow a couple of hours to really enjoy all the available experiences. More information can be found on their website .

DUBAI AQUARIUM & UNDERWATER ZOO

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

In continuing with the thoughts of David Attenborough where he insists “no one will protect what they don’t care about” suggests the idea that aquariums provide an opportunity for the general public to experience, connect and better understand, the importance of our oceans.

You can’t help but be impressed the instant you walk through the 48 metre long Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo tunnel on the ground floor of the Dubai Mall.   No matter how often you see it, be enthralled by the spectacular 10-million litre aquarium tank which, in true UAE style, is one of the largest suspended aquariums in the world.

This truly spectacular setting proudly accommodates around 140 diverse species of aquatic animals, is home to the largest collection of Sand Tiger Sharks in the world, as well as many other species of sharks and rays.

Underwater World 05

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo take the initiative to introduce educational presentations throughout the centre with the intention to provide insight into the habits and behaviours of all the marine animals who call the ocean home. The aquarium offers visitors plenty of opportunities for interaction including the cage snorkelling experience or a shark dive.

For the slightly less brave of visitors, a ride in the glass-bottom boat, where you can assist in feeding the giant trevally, is something our family highly recommends.

Keep an eye on notices and announcements throughout your visit as there are many other presentations and feeding opportunities during the day which are suitable for a full range of age groups.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is open from 10:00am till 12:00pm Midnight with the last admission at 11.30pm – but please, do yourself a favour and allow longer than 30 minutes for your visit.

There is no denying that virtual reality (VR) technology can take us on multiple journeys without even leaving the comfort of our home although, those seeking out adventure understand it’s the submersion which makes you feel alive. Spending time in the outdoors can provide the necessary elements needed to relax and rejuvenate your soul and connect with the living planet stirs feelings of empathy and compassion. These feelings are crucial for humanity during a time when global warming is at the top of the agenda and the list of endangered and vulnerable animals is ever growing.

The United Nations defines ecotourism as a kind of sustainable tourism that contributes to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

Over the past two decades, the concept of ecotourism has evolved significantly, targeting travelers looking for tours with a minimal negative impact on the environment. According to international studies, ecotourism currently accounts for over 20 percent of total tourism activities around the world.

The significance of ecotourism lies in its environmental benefits, as it focuses on environmental protection, eco-friendliness and environmental sustainability. In addition, it helps preserve biodiversity, accelerates the transition to a green economy, minimizes desertification and pollution, and contributes to the national GDP.

Ecotourism in the UAE

In line with the vision of its wise leadership, the UAE has consolidated its position on the world tourism map, with the number of inbound tourists reaching 16 million in 2017.

Although the country boasts significant environmental assets, the concept of ecotourism is still not fully exploited. As part of its mandate, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) launched a multi-phase national project named ‘The UAE’s Natural Wonders’ to promote ecotourism across the seven emirates.

In its initial phase that includes raising awareness about the country’s 43 nature reserves, MOCCAE has compiled an extensive collection of information materials, photographs and videos.

Eco-tourism in UAE

With COP28 on the horizon and the UAE taking massive strides towards strengthening its position as a global eco-tourism hub, here are some eco destinations to visit for your next getaway

Mangrove national park.

In the capital, for instance, you can’t miss out on the biodiversity hotspot that includes mangrove forests, salt marshes, mudflats and algal communities, and more. While a stroll in this park provides breath-taking sights, there are also plenty of activities for the entire family from stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking to hopping on a private boat tour. For more information, visit ead.gov.ae

Jubail Mangrove Park

A mangrove sanctuary at its core, the park is also the first self-contained educational, nature and leisure destination of its kind in the emirate. Explore a haven for avian and marine species native to Abu Dhabi, and kayaking is definitely the best way to do that! For more information, visit jubailisland.ae

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

The UAE’s work towards the preservation of wetlands has long enabled the breeding and reintroduction of certain endangered species. Gather the family to take in sights of the majestic greater flamingo, now flourishing in Al Wathba Wetland Reserve , while the Arabian oryx, once extinct in the wild, has been successfully reintroduced in the Um Al Zumoul Protected Area! For more information, visit ead.gov.ae

Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve

Or you could head towards Marawah, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you’re lucky, you can spot endangered species like the green turtle and the dugong . A major tourism draw lies just within, i.e., Al Batinah Island’s sea cows, Socotra cormorants and mangroves, to name a few. For more information, visit en.unesco.org/ biosphere/arab-states/marawah

You might also like: The UAE will plant 10,000 mangroves this year – here’s how Abu Dhabi residents can help

Wasit Nature Reserve

Located in the heart of Sharjah, the award-winning reserve is an architectural wonder, transformed from a wasteland to a diverse ecosystem for indigenous flora and fauna. For more information, visit epaashj.ae

Wadi Al Helou

Also known as the Sweet Valley, it is one of the most pristine natural reserves in the country, and home to an important archaeological site and a restored Islamic watchtower. Nestled between the Hajar mountains, the hiking trails here are simply surreal. For more information, visit epaashj.ae

Now here is a story still being told. The ongoing excavation programme means there is something new every day , and the range of attractions offered seamlessly blend history, leisure and nature into one thrilling experience. For more information, visit discovermleiha.ae

Peeling away the glamorous layers of Dubai reveals an array of sustainably driven spots. Flamingo spotting at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve has become popular in recent years. These expansive reserves serve as a breeding ground each year for crustaceans, mammals and fish, but the pink-feathered stars continue to steal the show. For more information, visit dm.gov.ae/discover-dubai/ras-al-khor

Of course, successful eco-tourism relies on proper infrastructure and leisure amenities. Scenic landscapes need both easy access and availability of accommodation nearby, as well as nature-based recreational activities to enjoy it all.

Luckily, the UAE has no dearth of these, right from eco-tours, guided hiking trails, wildlife observation trips, bird watching, stargazing, wetland exploration and more! In addition to the fun factor, these activities also provide renewed respect for nature and a better perspective on travel that doesn’t hurt the planet.

UAE’s Natural Wonders

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) launched a multi-phase national project named ‘ The UAE’s Natural Wonders ’ to promote ecotourism across the seven emirates. Under this project, one of the primary tasks is raising awareness about the country’s 43 nature reserves.

From our numerous outdoors trips over the years around the seven emirates of UAE, we have compiled our own list of UAE’s Natural wonders.

eco tourism uae

In almost any emirate, you can head to beaches as all 7 emirates have coasts. In Dubai our favorite is Kite Beach & JBR beac h where there are all the required facilities which you need on a beach day like showers, changing rooms, restaurants. Al Mamzar beach also offers great beach fun but it’s a bit far, closer to Sharjah.

For an offbeat experience, you can also volunteer to release baby turtles on a protected beach in Dubai during the turtle hatching season. Read here our experience of waving bye to sea turtles on the beach .

2. Desert (Through Tour Operator)

But if you fancy going on a safari and exploring desert, flora, and fauna Dubai Desert Conservation Renter (DDCR) is a great place. Platinum Heritage tour operator organizes some interesting desert experiences at DDCR like wildlife drive, overnight safari, Bedouin experience. Read here our tried and tested experience with platinum heritage at DDCR.

If you don’t want to go for any desert safari but still experience desert beauty, there is another way. Just visit desert resorts like Al Maha resort or our favorite Qasr Al Sarab for a stay or even for a brunch. At Qasr Al Sarab, you can enjoy the tallest red dunes near Liwa, Abu Dhabi which are one of the most beautiful sand dunes in UAE.

But don’t think that walking on soft sand is an easy task, especially long walks like this Desert challenge where we took part in a 5 km walk among desert dunes in Abu Dhabi . But if you fall down from the dune, you don’t get hurt, provided there are no rocks around. Especially in Liwa, you can play in the sand, like kids in a ball pit.

One warning, don’t try to drive on your own on sand because you need to know a few techniques like reducing tire pressure, etc, and always keep a shovel in the car which comes in handy if you get stuck in the sand.

3. Wadis & Mountains (Free)

If you want to explore UAE’s wadis, you need a map and 4X4. Read here our guide to wadis in UAE . We are not talking about wadi bashing here, as it will harm the wildlife staying there. It is preferable to go there in better weather and remember there is a danger of flash floods. Please don’t live anything back when you return, take your garbage and throw it in the next bin you find.

Jebel Jais, the highest mountain peak in UAE is worth visiting for a beautiful view and to feel the cooler temper, especially in summer.

If you are going in a wadi or any rocky area, better to keep one spare tire if you need it just in case and I highly recommend the explorer guides, totally reliable for finding ways to hidden places.

3. Mangroves & Khors (Free)

Mangroves and Khors are UAE’s Eco hubs and most important natural features. The most densely bio-diverse places, where you can find many species of sea life, birds, plants, etc. That’s why these places are great bird-watching sites as well. Read here a complete list of UAE’s Khors, Lagoons & Mangrove Forests .

There are also many activities you can do including kayaking. Read here out tried and tested kayaking experience at Abu Dhabi’s Easter mangroves .

If you want to know more about Mangroves and mangrove plantations, read here.

4. Birds (Mostly Free)

UAE’s location is central on the world map, so here you get to see a lot of migratory birds along with natives. Read more about Birds in UAE.

You can visit the below-listed places for bird-watching and learn about them.

My most favorite is  Wasit Nature Reserve in Sharjah, read here more about it . It is by far the best place bird sanctuary in UAE. You can see birds in captive but natural habitats and learn about birds. They have great educational games for kids too.

Second and most frequented by us for many years is  RAS Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuar y in Dubai.

The third is the Al Wathaba wetlands  in Abu Dhabi. It’s on my list of ‘need to visit places yet. Till then you can just learn about it from their website. Recently a new bird Arabian Eagle Owl is discovered in UAE, read here about this discovery .

5. Wildlife (Nominal Charges)

Yes, there is native wildlife in the UAE and the Arabian peninsula. Many expatriates and visitors are still unaware of the existence of the UAE’s wildlife. People generally think there is no life in this vast desert. So I think these places should be on the top of things to do in UAE by everyone visiting especially to see and find out more about UAE’s endangered wildlife.

We loved Al Hefaiya Mountain Conservation Center in Kalba, Sharjah (read here ). It’s in a beautiful setting on the foothill of the Hajar mountains.

Another great place to know about  Arabia’s Wildlife Center  in Sharjah

And if you fancy going on wildlife drive not so far from the city at Dubai Desert Conservation Center. Read here .

You can also take your children to  Turtle feeding at Mina A’salam for free every Wednesday.

I recommend this read how our actions can help conserve wildlife in the UAE.

Man-made Environment & Nature-conservation efforts in UAE

1. Parks- (Free or less than 10 Dhs each)

There are many fantastic man-made parks around the UAE. In the winter months, you can go to the park throughout the day but in the months like April, May, November when it’s hotter during the day; you can go to parks early in the morning or in the evening.

In Dubai, our favorites are Al Barsha Pond Park, Umm Suqueim Park, Creek Park & Mushrif Park. Mushrif Park is really huge and with a lot of local flora and fauna, great for barbeque and spending the whole day.

In these parks, you can have a picnic, take cycles and ride them. watch birds and plants, collect natural goodies, and see how children get creative playing with it or crafting it.

There are also weekend markets in many parks, where they sell local and organic things so it feels like some festivals in the parks.

Public parks are important not for just taking our kids to play but I feel even for us adults to have some close to nature, outdoor time. Read here , some of my favorite parks to visit for my me-time!

2. Zoos (Nominal Charges)

I personally have an issue with zoos, as I can’t bear to see wild animals in small cages, but I admit the significance of zoos in making our people and mainly future generations, kids aware of wildlife and showing them how to take care of wild animals and love them.

I am strongly against commercially using animal interaction for tourism purposes. So I am not featuring those examples here under my top Eco Experiences, I don’t think those are good examples of wildlife interaction. But here are some zoos in the UAE, where you can see wildlife where they are treated well.

Al-Ain zoo wildlife Center has the largest collection of wildlife in UAE, the night salaries during summer months are popular. A smaller zoo, Emirates Park Zoo, we visited on my son’s birthday so read here our experience .

The Green Planet is another place in the heart of Dubai, where you can give your kids some wildlife experience. Read here about our visit . Green Planet is also active in the conservation of wildlife, recently they gave a home to rescued endangered slow loris  ( read here ).

3. Aquariums (Charges apply)

There are some educational aquariums in the UAE, where you can learn and teach your children about native marine life. Dubai Aquarium & Underwater zoo in Dubai mall has a great display of many underwater species. But  Sharjah Aquarium is our favorite as they have displayed mostly local species. Read here .

4. Lakes (Free)

Al Qudra lakes on the outskirts of Dubai are man-made lakes, but they provide a great habitat for wildlife and birds. Great place to spend a day with family and friends. Read here about wildlife at Al Qudra lakes . But if you are visiting these lakes please remember to clean up your garbage when you leave, I have seen a lot of garbage around the lake last year. There is a great cycling track near Al Qudra lakes so it’s worth taking your bike for a ride there.

5. Farms (Need to take permission)

Technically I think traditional farming is not sustainable as the farms use a high amount of desalinated water. Water is precious in the UAE, as quite a lot of energy is used to desalinate seawater. Also, the weather conditions and lack of natural soil make traditional farming even more unsustainable. But there are few organic farms in the UAE, who follow principles of organic farming, use non-GMO seeds, and don’t use chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers.

These are definitely great places to take our kids and teach them how food grows.

Organic Oasis Farm in Dubai is one such farm.

Read here our fabulous experience of picking our own vegetables on Farm 182 in Abu Dhabi.

You can also introduce your kids to farm animals in the UAE. Read here about our education trip to a Dairy farm in Dubai.

Tribe, now that you have this list of our Top Eco-experience places in UAE, I know you will plan your visits soon, and believe me your kids or visitors will love it there. just remember while taking these Eco-experiences we need to be mindful and reduce our adverse impact on these places as much as possible.

Sustainable Travel & Ecotourism in Dubai

The U.A.E. has the world's largest ecological footprint - the Arabian desert, after all, is not a sustainable place to build major cities, and certainly not on the scale that Dubai and Abu Dhabi have embarked on. High temperatures and lack of water long precluded the development of arid landscapes. However, with the advent of air-conditioning, desalination plants, and modern transport, cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi continue to grow into sprawling urban centers. In places like these where summer temperatures often top 100°F (37.8°C), massive amounts of energy must be used to keep the populace cool.

The major projects here - whether it's hotels, malls, golf courses, skyscrapers, roads, man-made islands, entertainment complexes, real estate development, or other infrastructure projects all tax the environment - and until recently there's been little consciousness about their environmental impacts. Profligate water and electricity usage further strains the environment. Dubai is well known for its beach resorts, golf courses, and parks, but keeping that landscape green requires an inordinate amount of water. The U.A.E., in fact, has the world's highest per capita water use.

Sustainable tourism remains a fledgling industry in Dubai, but the local government is beginning to take a closer look at its advantages. The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing launched a "Green Tourism Award" program recently to encourage innovations in eco-tourism (for details, visit www.green.dubaitourism.ae). This initiative includes efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the tourism sector's sprawling developments, and supporting activities that encourage a celebration of the U.A.E.'s natural assets.

Eco-friendly outdoor activities include traditional desert safaris, hiking and camping in the Hajar Mountains, scuba and snorkeling outings on the U.A.E.'s Eastern coast, and bird-watching adventures. With over 400 species in the U.A.E., there are extensive bird-watching opportunities in places as diverse as Mushrif Park, Emirates Golf Club, Jebel Ali, and Hatta (visit www.dubaitourism.ae for more information). You can also enjoy an eco-friendly desert immersion at Al Maha Desert Resort, perched on the slope of a huge dune located within a desert conservation reserve of 233 sq. km (90 sq. miles/5% of the landmass of Dubai). For a more hearty experience, expedition companies will take you out for a trek in the Hajar Mountains, with base camps set up from abandoned Shihhi villages (a tribe of the northern emirate of Ras al-Khaimah and neighboring Oman). For more information, see: www.arabiahorizons.com/Hajar-Mountains-Safari/.

The best scuba and snorkeling sites are found in the emirate of Fujairah, as well as off "Snoopy Island" on the Gulf of Oman, where tropical fish flitter around an extensive coral reef. For the more adventurous who want to explore an array of fascinating shipwrecks located further south on this stretch of the Eastern coast of the U.A.E., there are plenty of opportunities (visit www.scuba-2000.com).

The Desert Islands Abu Dhabi (www.desertislands.com) will form a collection of eight islands off the capital's coast with dynamic wildlife reserves, untouched marine ecologies, and archeological sites - all meant to develop sustainable tourism in the country. Once completed, activities will include nature and wildlife drives and hikes, mountain biking, kayaking, snorkeling, falconry, and archery. Yas Island is one of the first islands in this project to be completed.

The Abu Dhabi government is also positioning the emirate as an innovator in renewable energy technology, launching the first ever World Future Energy Summit in 2009. This event, to be held each January, draws an international crowd and features exhibits on clean energy, with a line-up of impressive speakers that have included Tony Blair. For more information, visit: www.worldfutureenergysummit.com. Abu Dhabi has also won the bid to host IRENA, the world's first multilateral renewable energy agency. For details, see: www.irena.org.

Abu Dhabi's Masdar City project - an ambitious enterprise funded entirely by Masdar, the clean technology investment fund of the Abu Dhabi government -represents the world's first carbon neutral, zero waste city. It features fanciful technological innovations including jazzy people-moving devices and fascinating state-of-the-art cooling technologies meant to keep the city inhabitable without guzzling energy. Masdar City will host the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology - a sister school to MIT that will become a center for innovation in green technology. While behind schedule on construction, parts of the city are open, and it's worth inquiring about a visit if you are in Abu Dhabi. For more information, visit: www.masdarcity.ae/en/index.aspx.

Sustainable Tourism in UAE: Exploring Eco-Friendly Travel Options

sustainable tourism in UAE

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is renowned for its luxurious hotels, sprawling shopping malls, and iconic skyscrapers. However, amidst this urban marvel, the country is also making significant strides towards sustainable tourism. Recognizing the importance of preserving its natural resources and cultural heritage, the UAE has adopted eco-friendly practices to promote sustainable travel. This blog will explore the various initiatives and options available for eco-conscious travelers to experience the beauty of the UAE while minimizing their environmental impact.

Protected Natural Areas

The UAE is home to several protected natural areas that showcase its diverse ecosystems. One such example is the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve , covering over 225 square kilometers of pristine desert habitat. Visitors can embark on guided tours to explore the rich biodiversity of the desert, including rare species like Arabian oryx and gazelles.

Additionally, the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary in Dubai is a haven for migratory birds, providing an excellent opportunity for birdwatching enthusiasts.

Sustainable Architecture

The UAE is renowned for its impressive architecture, but it has also embraced sustainable building practices. The world-famous Masdar City in Abu Dhabi is a prime example of sustainable urban development.

Designed as a carbon-neutral city , it utilizes renewable energy sources such as Solar & Wind Power for primary source of electricity, and features innovative technologies to reduce energy consumption such as the DCS (District Cooling System) that utilizes chilled water to cool buildings instead of traditional air conditioning units and waste production, Waste-to-Energy Plant that converts organic waste into biogas through anaerobic digestion. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the city’s eco-friendly infrastructure and sustainable practices.

Eco-friendly Accommodations

Several hotels and resorts in the UAE have adopted eco-friendly practices to minimize their environmental impact. For instance, the Al Maha Desert Resort in Dubai operates entirely on solar power and utilizes sustainable water management systems.

Conservation and Education Centers

The UAE is committed to raising awareness about environmental conservation and sustainability. The Emirates Nature-WWF , in collaboration with the UAE government, has established several conservation and education centers across the country. These centers aim to educate visitors about local ecosystems, wildlife conservation, and sustainable living practices. One prominent example is the Jebel Hafeet National Park in Al Ain, which offers educational programs, nature walks, and birdwatching activities to promote environmental awareness and conservation.

ECO-FRIENDLY STORES IN DUBAI

World-class dining, extravagant shopping and record-breaking architecture are just some of the things that come to mind when we talk about tourism in Dubai. The emirate; however, with its increasing emphasis on going green also offers much in the way of eco-friendly tourism. If you are seeking sustainable ways of enjoying a vacation, you have come to the right place. Here is all you need to know about ecotourism in Dubai.

ECOTOURISM IN DUBAI: VACATIONING RESPONSIBLY

Sustainable ecotourism practices in Dubai allow you to explore the desert landscape and the local flora and fauna without harming the environment. But first, here’s an overview of ecotourism in the emirates.

Ecotourism encourages travellers to be responsible and mindful while visiting natural areas. This is a kind of tourism that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of the local people as well as plants and animals. According to the United Nations, ecotourism contributes to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

The UAE has more than 5,000 sq.km. of protected areas, which is why the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has launched ‘The UAE’s Natural Wonders’ to promote ecotourism in Dubai along with other emirates. The goals of ecotourism under this program include raising awareness about ecotourism places in the UAE and building environmental and cultural understanding among both locals and tourists.

DUBAI ECOTOURISM: TOP LOCATIONS

Here are some of the best places in the emirate that provide eco-friendly leisure.

DUBAI DESERT CONSERVATION RESERVE (DDCR)

The vast expanse of DDCR is one of the largest nature reserves in the UAE. Covering an area of 225 sq. km, DDCR covers almost 5% of the total land of Dubai. The reserve has hundreds of species of plants, birds, mammals and reptiles. Not to mention, you can also engage in activities like trekking, safaris, sandboarding, camel and horse riding and falconry.  You can also head to Sonora Camp for some extravagant desert dining.

UAE's sustainable tourism drive might well be the highpoint of travelling to Dubai

The country is strengthening its green principles for visitors.

It is well known by now that the international tourism and the livelihoods dependent on it were greatly affected by the global pandemic. However, as the world opens up, the UAE's travel industry remains resilient. Governments and private sector partners have ensured destinations stay compelling and confidence increases as people begin to travel again.

Things were already looking up last year as Dubai welcomed 7.28 million visitors. Our mission is to strengthen Dubai's economy by delivering world-class experiences underpinned by sustainable principles. There is tremendous untapped potential in this area – to engage the private and public sectors and garner support from people who are passionate about sustainable tourism.

Since the launch of our Sustainability Requirements, which were implemented to improve and unify environmental practices across hotels and resorts in Dubai, we have ramped up efforts to strengthen the city’s responsible tourism credentials. The requirements also support the hospitality industry and strengthen the ecosystem, as hotels and resorts across the country progress towards achieving their goals. As part of these efforts, Dubai Sustainable Tourism delivered 18,000 hours of training to its stakeholders and partners last year.

A recent Tripadvisor report, Travel in 2022 – A Look Ahead that surveyed more than 10,000 adults aged 18 to 75, found that travellers are seeking destinations where they can immerse themselves in "authentic local experiences".

Research commissioned by the Centre for Sustainability through Research and Education for Expo 2020 Dubai has also shown that eco-tourism has an increased significance to those travelling to Dubai as 44 per cent of visitors considered sustainability an "important concept influencing their behaviour".

Catering to this growing demand for eco-tourism, Dubai offers wildlife observation trips, bird watching, stargazing, wetland exploration and visits to local communities. The same study also highlighted that 22 per cent of visitors surveyed identified themselves as responsible, sustainability-minded travellers who use public transport, consume water sensibly , and are willing to pay more for eco-certified products and services.

Like much of the UAE, Dubai offers a multitude of experiences where tourists have the opportunity to engage with local traditions, experience a cultural exchange and visit historical neighbourhoods to understand Emirati heritage.

One example is the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, a vast expanse comprising 10 per cent of Dubai's total area and the largest unfenced nature reserve in the UAE. Popular with both domestic and international tourists, the reserve is home to the 3,000 year old Saruq Al Hadid archaeological site . It is also a sanctuary for more than 200 species of native birds, 158 species of migratory birds and endangered species. The reserve is the perfect terrain for horse-riders and cyclists to explore the vast expanse comprising desert, wetlands and lakes.

The UAE boasts one of the largest ratios of protected areas per land mass in the world with 15.5 per cent of the country protected, and in Dubai protected areas include Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and the Hatta Nature Reserve. However, the city is constantly expanding its sustainable tourism credentials.

The aim of Dubai 2040 Urban Masterplan is for the city to become one of the world’s most sustainable destinations, while reinforcing Dubai's reputation as a global hub for business, investment and tourism. The plan also emphasises enhancing the quality of life for Dubai's residents and visitors and preserving the environment.

By 2040, the length of public beaches across the Emirate will be increased by as much as 400 per cent. The expansion of tourism attractions, meanwhile, will increase by over 100 per cent, adding to the diversity of Dubai’s offerings. A 16km cycling track alongside Jumeirah beach will eventually connect to other coastal areas, building on the city's 520km bicycle network.

Dubai is committed to supporting ecotourism and environmental protection. And as the UAE looks forward to hosting next year's climate summit Cop28 , which will address opportunities to create a more sustainable and progressive economic future, we believe that responsible tourism principles can help fulfil the country's sustainability goals.

We cannot, however, do it alone. It is imperative for the public and private sectors to continue to collaborate to accelerate moves towards a green economy, to achieve sustainable tourism goals and make the cities of UAE forward-thinking, world-class destinations for sustainable tourism.

Tourism is one of the strongest pillars of Dubai's economic growth. With the aim of attracting 20 million visitors by 2020, Dubai has set clear targets for sustainable development. These are in line with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform the United Arab Emirates (UAE) into a ‘Green Economy for Sustainable Development’.

Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) is a public-private partnership, with the involvement of civil society, that aims to contribute to Dubai’s broader clean energy and sustainable development targets by embedding the principles of sustainability into all aspects of the tourism sector. DST brings together all economic stakeholders involved in tourism and hospitality – from tour operators to hotel developers and operators. Its holistic approach builds on common goal to achieve the long-term objective of a sustainable economy. The initiative’s structured approach to achieving sustainability identifies four clear targets – energy efficiency; environmental protection; awareness and education; and sectoral engagement. These fall within the overall context of environmental protection, social development and economic enablers, which will enable tourism in Dubai contribute to the overall journey of mitigating climate change and promoting sustainability by using four working streams or delivery platforms.

Dubai Sustainable Tourism celebrates 50 eco-friendly initiatives on World Environment Day

  • Environment

They include desert reserves, eco-hotels, cultural pursuits and other attractions

SUSTOURISM-1654419394449

DUBAI: Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST), part of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), is celebrating sustainable practices across the city to mark the 50th World Environment Day, as it strives to further enhance Dubai’s position as a leading sustainable destination.

From desert conservation reserves, to sustainable restaurateurs and eco-hotels, to cultural pursuits and eco-tourism attractions, DET is shining a light on 50 of the city’s pioneering initiatives in environmental conservation and sustainability across the tourism ecosystem on the occasion of World Environment Day, that was created by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), as “a global platform for inspiring positive change”.

CONSERVATION AND NATURE INITIATIVES:

Dubai’s unique ecosystem has made for generations of sustainable conservations and a distinctive connection with nature. From Bedouin practices, to nature reserves and safaris, Dubai has long had a harmonious connection with its surroundings. Environmental protection is ingrained into the very DNA of Dubai’s natural landscape and is something that continues to be enhanced and celebrated.

Dubai Can Initiative

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, launched ‘Dubai Can’, a citywide sustainability initiative to turn the tide on plastic and inspire mass action to actively reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles. There are currently 40 free drinking water fountains placed across the city.

Dubai Integrated Energy

The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy has formulated and launched the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 in 2011, with the purpose of diversifying sources of energy and increase the clean energy share. Dubai aims to increase the share of clean energy to 29 per cent and the Emirate’s energy demand by 30 per cent by 2030.

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

The DDCR is the UAE’s first national park, which is a carefully planned rehabilitation centre for nature, to preserve and tend to the city’s beautiful desert habitat.

Ras Al Khor Flamingo Sanctuary

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the few protected urban areas, located in the heart of Dubai Creek. There are tens of thousands of flamingo birds. This expansive sanctuary offers a space for the birds to breed and a safe reserve for other plants, fish and mammals to thrive. null UAE tourism excellence: Sustainable policies that led to international & regional leadership

eco tourism uae

The UAE continues to maintain its regional and global leadership as an exceptional tourism destination and the best place to live and work in. In line with its wise leadership’s directives, the country’s tourism sector has showcased an excellent performance, confirming post-pandemic recovery and ushering in a new phase of prosperity and growth.

The continuous efforts to develop the national tourism sector have cemented the UAE’s position on the global tourism landscape. Today, it has become one of the key international destinations for tourism, ranking among the top 10 destinations globally in various global competitiveness indexes for tourism, travel, and hotel industry in 2021.

A giant leap forward in tourism index

In Q1 2022, the UAE’s hotels welcomed nearly six million visitors who spent 25 million nights, resulting in a 10 per cent growth compared to 2019 and beating the pre-pandemic growth rates. The average duration of the guest stays in hotels saw a 25 per cent growth during the same period, accounting for four nights instead of three. During this period, the occupancy rate of hotel facilities in the country reached 80 per cent - one of the highest in the world.

Furthermore, hotels achieved a total of AED 11 billion in revenue in Q1 2022, leading to a 20 per cent growth compared to 2019, with these facilities going back to operate at their maximum capacities with 200,000 hotel rooms.

With regards to flights and hospitality, the number of travelers who passed through the UAE’s airports exceeded 20 million in Q1 2022 as compared to 8.6 million travelers in 2021, reflecting a whopping 135 per cent growth. During the first three months of 2022, the total of transit passengers through the airports reached 7 million, accounting for a 203 per cent spike compared to the same period last year.

Tourism and travel contributed to a 3.4 per cent growth in GDP during the last 3 years totaling 15 per cent, as compared to 11.6 per cent in 2019.

These results indeed reflect the increasing trust in the national tourism sector and the impeccable reputation achieved by the UAE’s tourism environment in terms of both domestic tourism and international tourists and visitors. They also confirm the effectiveness of the sustainable tourism policies adopted by the UAE, and the success of the initiatives, campaigns, and exhibitions which have continuously supported and enhanced the tourism sector, not to forget the future-readiness of the national tourism product and the country’s leading services, unique attractions, and advanced tourism infrastructure.

National tourism development strategy

The Ministry of Economy has worked alongside its partners to develop a comprehensive national strategy to enhance tourism performance and consolidate the UAE’s position as a sustainable tourism destination. These partners include local tourism development agencies and departments and the concerned authorities in the tourism sector at the local and federal levels, in addition to the private sector and international tourism agencies and organizations. These efforts were centered around  future foresight, innovation, and technology integration in the national tourism sector  to ensure proper introduction of tourism destinations, development of the UAE tourism product, and attract FDI to this sector.

Domestic tourism strategy

The domestic tourism strategy is a continuation of the UAE’s national tourism development strategy as it plays an important role in increasing tourism investments and revenues, which in turn contributes to enhancing the growth of the tourism sector. The total spending on domestic tourism in 2020 amounted to 33%, while foreign tourism spending amounted to 67%, compared to 22% on domestic and 78% on international in 2019.

One of the main aspects of the UAE’s domestic tourism strategy launched in 2020 is the promotion of the most important natural, cultural, heritage, and historical attractions in the country, in addition to developing the tourism product. It highlights the beauty and uniqueness of the tourism experience offered by each of the emirates, and highlights entertainment events and cultural and social activities to increase each emirate’s tourism attractiveness.

The World's Coolest Winter campaign

The implementation of the UAE’s domestic tourism strategy encompassed the launch of various programs and initiatives. The World’s Coolest Winter campaign is the most notable among them, as it achieved resounding success across all emirates and went on to become the biggest campaign of its kind to highlight the many diverse domestic tourism offerings all over the country. The second edition of the campaign, which ran from mid-December 2021 until the end of January 2022, generated AED 1.5 billion in revenues and attracted over 1.3 million local tourists over 45 days.

The campaign contributed to highlighting environmental and sustainable tourism efforts by the country and enabled visitors from all emirates to enjoy the natural sites, such as reserves, oases, mountains, beaches, and islands that celebrate biodiversity. Desert tourism, which includes safaris, sand boarding, and search for oases hidden in the depths of the deserts among giant sand dunes, also became most sought after by the country’s citizens and residents alike. Also popular were beach tourism that offers several beach and water sports and free-diving, and mountain tourism which includes hiking among the mountains and valleys, mountain biking, and rock climbing.

Unified national tourism identity

As part of the UAE’s efforts to advance economic diversification over the next 50 and further enhance the tourism product, the country launched its unified tourism identity. This identity is an extension of the country’s visual media identity and consolidates the image and position of the UAE in the eyes of the global audiences. Moreover, it unites efforts and energies to celebrate the UAE’s success story and conveys it to the world by highlighting its unique features and advantages and its position as a hub in various fields.

Expo 2020 Dubai

The hosting of Expo 2020 Dubai is one of the UAE’s most significant initiatives that contributed directly to supplying the tourism sector with record numbers of tourists and revenues. The global event once again highlighted the leadership of the UAE’s travel, hotel, hospitality and entertainment sectors and their sustainable potential for growth. The expo succeeded in attracting more than 24 million visitors over six months.

Legacy of the world expo boosts MICE tourism and future technologies

Building on the legacy of Expo 2020 and through the entrepreneurial projects that will be implemented in the Expo City Dubai, the UAE is set to host a new world-class destination for residence, business, education, innovation, and the latest model for future cities, scheduled to open in October 2022. This will contribute to elevating the national tourism environment to a new level, especially MICE tourism and tourism related to future technologies that the UAE continues to embrace and develop.

Museum of the Future

The UAE has always firmly believed in the consistency of creativity, development and innovation. In February this year, a unique milestone was achieved in the development of the country’s tourism destinations portfolio, upgrading its quality and consolidating the position and image of the UAE as a destination of the future. The Museum of the Future represents a historic icon without columns, and offers a fusion of theaters and advanced technology laboratories. The museum has been called the most beautiful building on earth because of its unique shape and extraordinary design elements.

The museum carries the slogan ‘Climate and Education,’ which refers to building a future of progress and prosperity. It supports local and global efforts in combating the repercussions of climate change and promoting sustainability. The museum also reflects the extreme accuracy of advanced technologies and advancements in artificial intelligence.

Development of eco-tourism destinations

The UAE has undertaken some massive tourism projects to promote tourism development in the natural and outstanding destinations in the country. Examples include Hatta, Khorfakkan and Jebel Jais, in addition to many other eco-tourism projects across the country that further enhance the UAE's position on the map of global, adventure and recreation tourism.

These Luxurious 5-Star Desert Resorts Offer An Exceptional Eco Experience in the UAE

Far from UAE’s bling boutique hotels lie a host of responsible desert resorts offering everything from wildlife safaris to dining under the stars all while caring for you and the planet

eco tourism uae

While global travel has started to return to pre-pandemic levels one thing has changed for good: tourists have become increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their holidays. Many travellers are now looking for resorts that offer the luxury they are accustomed to but with care for the planet as a priority.

A quick scout around the UAE reveals a host of retreats that fit the luxury-loving-yet-eco-conscious-traveller’s (yes, there is such a thing!) bill. Reducing food waste, growing produce, sourcing from local communities and educating guests on the local environment are all part and parcel of a stay at one of these stunning luxury desert resorts. And naturally, this all takes place without compromising on the five-star experience.

Offering harmonious luxury experiences, the following five UAE retreats are leading the way when it comes to pampering you and protecting our planet.

Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara, Abu Dhabi

eco tourism uae

It is hard not to be impressed even before arriving at this accoladed luxury desert resort situated in the ethereal Rub’ al Khali or Empty Quarter – a desert area that covers some 650,000 square kilometres between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The long, winding road leading to this unique destination is enveloped by magnificent undulating dunes shimmering in the sun – a sight to make even the most seasoned traveller gasp. It’s easy to see why this was chosen as the set for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and picked up Best Desert Resort in the Middle East at the World Travel Awards 2022!

Every aspect of this understated resort is five star. From the oversized bath tubs and rain showers nestled within sumptuous arabesque rooms and villas to a plethora of activities including star gazing, sand boarding, meditation , culinary masterclasses and discovering ancient cultural traditions such as falconry, no detail has been overlooked. Guests can also truly immerse themselves in the nature of this desert resort by looking out for wildlife such as the Arabian oryx that roam free in their natural habitat.

But it’s the sustainable luxury ethos that makes Qasr Al Sarab stand out. From solar panels that heat the water and reduce the use of electricity by up to 80 per cent, to zero waste strategies in the kitchen that see leftovers composted and utilised as fertiliser for the onsite herb garden and vegetable greenhouse, the hotel seeks to be a green idyll. The hotel has completely phased out plastic bottles while cardboard, oil, paper, and bars of soap are all recycled. All these initiatives and more have earned the resort Gold status in the Green Growth Awards.

eco tourism uae

On the rich savannah of Sir Bani Yas Island – a designated conservation area inhabited by more than 17,000 free roaming animals – lies Anantara’s Al Sahel Villas. This romantic retreat, set within a protected wildlife sanctuary, is a true luxury hideaway with eco credentials that befit its location.

Thanks to decades of conservation work, Sir Bani Yas Island is now home to thousands of large free-roaming animals and several million trees and plants, including rare species such as the thorn acacia and the gum tree. The 87 square km reserve was awarded the accolade of ‘World’s Leading Sustainable Tourism Destination’ at the World Travel Awards back in 2014 – an award that it has picked up, alongside others, several times since.

After a healthy breakfast, they can embark on a wide range of eco activities that include nature trails, mountain biking and mangrove planting. For those culturally inclined, the island’s Christian monastery, built between the sixth and seventh Centuries, is open to visitors.
