Liverpool cruise terminal (aka Cruise Liverpool) is nestled along a UNESCO-listed waterfront on Princes Parade and consists of a 350-metre-long berth that can accommodate large cruise vessels. Upon sailing into the city, make sure to come out on the upper decks to enjoy breathtaking views of Liverpool’s skyline, the historic Pier Head, and the iconic Liver Building.

Would have thought it would be the former because no foot passengers are accepted on the P&O ferry to Dublin , unless you are taking your car on the ferry!

And where do you plan on parking your car ?

Ferries sail from both the Liverpool and Wirral side of the Mersey...

From where the cruise liner terminal is you will have no more than a 10 min walk to some decent restaurants.

Albert Dock is a short walk along the river front where there are several options (they are all listed down the right hand side of this following website, but you will have to check opening times yourself, but all should be open by 12pm):

Liverpool One is a 10 minute walk away with many options. Most are situated on the top level where the cinema is, which over looks Chavasse Park and Albert Dock and Pier Head; but there are also several places like a Browns and Jamie's Italian etc etc on Paradise Street, and Bistro Franc on Hanover Street.

Or you can find many places to eat around Castle Street, North John Street, Victoria Street. From the Pier Head just walk up Water Street to where it joins Castle Street (the Town Hall is up there!).

Plenty of other places around that area, as well as at Liverpool One and the Albert Dock that I mentioned above.

Have a look yourself at the links I have given you and decide which cuisine you are after and how much you want to pay; and it might also be a good idea to reserve a table, because these places can get very busy for lunch.

Nearest I can think of apart the offerings at the Albert Dock,are Meet Argentina, Marco Pierre White, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Etsu, Fazenda, Matou & Chaophraya.

The nearest restaurant (as opposed to hotel dining room) is probably Matou, right on the Pier Head.

I've never eaten there, but it always seems to have terrific smells wafting out when I walk the dog past it at night, and its online menus read like a HUGE leap forward from the traditional standards of Pier Head eating you might remember with horror (and I've wiped from my mind) in the late 1970s.

Some (in fact many!) excellent suggestions already made but probably the second closest option after Matou is Brasco Lounge which would be worth checking out and has a decent varied menu at good prices.

Will have a look at these two as well as i think the weather on Friday may not be good so the nearer to where we get on the ship the better!

4 things to do near your cruise ship.

Whether you’re cruising into Liverpool or starting your journey at Liverpool cruise terminal (or nearby at for example Crowne Plaza Liverpool, with its rich cultural, historical and musical history, we’ve made a to-do list of must see sights near to the Port of Liverpool!

When thinking about what to do near Liverpool Cruise Terminal , any real Scouser would suggest a trip to one of the most photographed areas of the city- the Beatles Statue at the Pier Head ! Just a 7 minute walk from the Liverpool Cruise Terminal, the iconic larger than life statue of the Fab 4 is placed perfectly at the waterfront.

Gifted to the city by the world famous Cavern Club in 2015, this statue marks the 50th anniversary from when the band last played a Liverpool gig- providing you with a little bit of history, as well as making a fantastic picture for the gram, or photo album!

Speaking of the Fab 4, the Pier Head is also home to the Port of Liverpool building which featured as the hotel in the Beatles based film ‘Yesterday’.

However, the Pier Head is also home to many other legendary Liverpool buildings such as The Cunard building and The Royal Liver Building. We encourage you to pay homage to the two Liver Birds perched on top of the Royal Liver Building- Bella and Bertie- legend has it that without the two birds the city of Liverpool would cease to be!

2) FERRY ACROSS THE MERSEY

If you’re looking to explore further afield, then we suggest taking the Ferry across the Mersey!

Whilst it may not be quite as glamorous as the cruise liner docked in the Liverpool Cruise Terminal, at just £11 this is an adventure we encourage you to take on!

During the 50-minute cruise you will be able to experience the view of Liverpool’s skyline and be filled in on the unique history of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Liverpool Waterfront.

In addition to this, the ferry will also dock at the Woodside Ferry Terminal on the Wirral, where you will be able to find the Woodside ferry village. The terminal itself is home to many independent food vendors including Little Napoli and Caffé Cream, and makes it the perfect stop to refuel and relax before boarding the ferry back to Liverpool!

3) MUSIC NO.2

Liverpool is a city of music, culture and history- so what better way to delve deeper into the story of the city than the The British Music Experience !

Located in The Cunard Building, you will be able to see over 600 musical artifacts, from the Beatles to Bowie, and the Spice Girls to The Rolling Stones!

Throughout the tour you will be provided with a musical education, starting with the origins of British pop, moving through to the iconic outfits of Freddie Mercury and other stars, before concluding with instruments and handwritten lyrics from the likes of Noel Gallagher and Adele!

Littered with interactive experiences and hologram performances from your favourite artists, the British Music Experience is a must visit for any fan of music, regardless of  genre!

4) RETAIL THERAPY

The shopping district within the city is called Liverpool One for a reason, not only is it situated in the L1 postcode, but many would also consider the area second to none for some retail therapy!

Opened in 2008 this area of the city is popular among tourists and locals alike, and is the ideal place to spend a few hours at the start or end of any trip.

In addition to the numerous high street and designer brands found within Liverpool One, if you’re looking for something a little more unique then why not take a short stroll up Bold Street.

Here you will find many brands and shops unique to Liverpool, and through exploring and purchasing from these stores you will be helping support the independent businesses of the city!

Liverpool's cruise berth officially opened on September 21st 2007. The berth is just a 5-10 minute walk from the World Heritage City center, whilst England's beautiful Northwest region is practically on the door step. A new permanent cruise terminal has been replaced the old facility in 2023. This terminal is only a block or two away from the existing terminal.

The berth is at Princes Dock. A 3 minute walk south to Pier Head, where in summer there is a fair with many rides, a rather lively area. Another 8 minute walk south, you will find the beautiful restored Albert Dock with The Beatles Story Museum and the Mersey side Maritime Museum and many restaurants and cafes in a very pleasant area. Right next to the Albert dock you will find Wheel of Liverpool , a huge ferris wheel with great views.

If the weather is nice, the above area is certainly good for a few hours of fun and relaxation.

The area around the docks is thriving with hotels, shopping areas, and restaurants. You can look for accommodation around the Princes Dock, where two of the most luxurious city establishments are situated. Many reviews have rated the Liverpool Port and docks among the best in the world. It is therefore has become one of the major destinations for cruise ships in the United Kingdom together with the port in Southampton Hampshire , Dover Kent , Harwich Essex and Tilbury (London) .

Besides convenient docks, the many sightseeing destinations around the cruise ship terminal as well as elsewhere in the city make this a favourite destination for visitors. The passenger terminal has been overhauled recently, and the added comfort and convenience for passengers embarking or disembarking here has made this a busy destinations for cruise ships.

Liverpool city centre is a few minutes from the docks, and offers plenty of visitor attractions and conveniences. The train station is less than 5 minutes by taxi or 20-minute walk and there is no dearth of convenient parking spots. The Cathedral has the distinction of the being the largest in the UK. Visitors can tour the Cathedral Tower, overlooking the Mersey River, or the Lady Chapel, famous for its architectural marvels.

How to Get to

Liverpool cruise docks are only a short travel distance away from Liverpool John Lennon Airport (20 minutes by taxi). Manchester International Airport is about 62 km or 38 mi from the port.

Liverpool Lime Street Station, the city’s main train station is located about 20 minutes away on foot from the port. A taxi ride will be approximately 5 minutes.

The station is well connected with Manchester, London, Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Leave the M6 motorway at Junction 21a, and take the M62 towards Liverpool City Centre. Follow the brown signs on the arterial routes for Liverpool and/or Waterfront until you reach The Liver Building, which is the location of the passenger terminal.

Cruise travelers that enjoy tasting the local cuisine when in port will have a great treat in Livorno. Cacciucco is the most famous traditional dish but there are other flavors to enjoy. And there are excellent restaurants to savor the traditional recipes of Livorno.

The Best Restaurants

Considering that Livorno cuisine is famous for seafood and fish dishes, Il Tegolo, Gennarino, Osteria del Mare and Trattoria da Galileo are on the top of our list as the best in Livorno. Although excellent in their sea creatures’ cuisine, all of them serve equally fabulous meat dishes and pasta but do not think about ordering a pizza on any of these. Be aware that because these are some of the best and well-known restaurants in Livorno, the cruise traveler may be mingling with local business people.

Important to Note: Because it is very unlikely that the cruise ship passenger will stay an overnight in Livorno, the Editor only selected restaurants that open for lunch (although many also open for dinner). Therefore many famous and popular restaurants that only open for dinner have been left out. The restaurant listing on these pages aims to be a balanced and experienced selection of over 400 restaurants in Livorno and surrounding areas - focusing on the ones in or closer to both the historical city center or highlighted attractions.

GENNARINO (Classic Excellence) - $$ to $$$

A must in the City Center, it has a classy décor with a warm Tuscan touch, serving excellent traditional cuisine with great service and fabulous wine list. Both appetizers and desserts are as affordable as delicious; The Cacciucco is cooked in a traditional modern style at €21.00 (per person).

IL TEGOLO (Oysters and Fresh Fish) - $$ to $$$$

One of the best restaurants in Livorno it has a great service - young and friendly - but is on the high-priced side. Il Tegolo recipes focus on oysters and champagne but also with an excellent wine list for fabulous fresh fish dishes. It has a very classy ambiance with an old style character.

OSTERIA DEL MARE (Nautical Tastes) - $$ to $$$

Typical Italian fish and seafood at its best with a unique décor - two small rooms with a tavern like, rustic maritime atmosphere. The highest quality of fish is the catch of day (go for whatever is recommended as it always the fresher).

TRATTORIA DA GALILEO (Old Fashion Flavors) - $$ to $$$

Doesn't look like much from the outside but the walls filled with photos of international celebrities that have eaten at Da Galileo speaks for the fame of this restaurant that has managed to keep its authenticity in despite of the glamorous guests. One of the best (and largest) served Cacciucco in Livorno - Appetizer, Cacciucco, Wine, Dessert and Coffee for around €30.00 per person.

One of the better known restaurants in Livorno, it still keeps a 'popular' clientele but is really targeting a higher end. In recent years, great care has been put into the decoration and it has a modern, colorful interior. The good news is that prices have not been increased and it is still affordable to taste excellent and traditional Livorno cuisine.

Local Cuisine and Traditional Flavors

Livorno is well known for its fish and seafood dishes and in particular the "Cacciucco" (a soup made of various sea creatures, wine, tomato, hot peppers and garlic). Naturally, several restaurants serve seafood and fish dishes almost exclusively, and many have the famous Cacciucco in their menu.

Another local flavor not to be missed is the "Livorno Punch" , which was inspired by the English punch, traditionally made with tea, lemon, cinnamon, sugar and brandy. It goes pretty well with "Torta di Cecci" - a sort of pancake made of chickpea flour.

The Torta can also be served in a Focaccia bread or a roll and becomes know as "Cinque e Cinque" , referring to the original price - 5 Cents for the Torta + 5 Cents for the bread.

The Three Cacciucco Recipe Variations:

Traditional - the various types of fish are cooked in the same pan although adding each type according to its consistency and cooking needs. The resulting flavor blends the different tastes of the different types of fish and seafood.

Traditional Modern - each type of fish and seafood is cooked separately, depending on its consistency and kind of flesh. The resulting combination of flavors enhances the difference in taste and texture between the different kinds of fish and seafood used.

Mettricks: for coffee and brunch

Mettricks is a locally owned café restaurant near the Southampton docks that’s on a mission to bring great coffee to Southampton. The decor is homely, with scrubbed pine tables and mismatched chairs. They work with many local suppliers for the best quality meat and bakery products.

If you’re on the hunt for free wifi, this is the place to settle down. Try an egg and crispy bacon sandwich or tea-time treat of home-made cake and coffee.

We especially like the original café at 117 High Street. It stays open in the evening for cocktails, wine and real ales with light bites and bar snacks until 10pm.

The Grand Café: afternoon tea in Southampton

Around Southampton and the historic towns you may visit on your cruise excursions, you’ll find plenty of tea-rooms serving tea and cakes. If you want to try the oh-so-English ritual of afternoon tea in Southampton, head for The Grand Café. Originally the historic South Western Hotel, it was used by first class passengers on the Titanic.

Afternoon tea is served from 2.30-5pm (book in advance). You’ll be served at a table with an array of delicate sandwiches, scones with cream and jam and a selection of cakes.

It’s a meal in itself, so you’d better miss out lunch to do it justice. If you’re visiting Beaulieu, another elegant afternoon tea stop is the luxurious Montagu Arms , for tea in the lounge or courtyard garden.

The Pig in the Wall is a boutique hotel, set into the old city walls of Southampton. It’s also one of the restaurants in Southampton serving light dishes, homemade flatbreads and cakes from mid-morning to 10pm.

As the name suggests, they specialize in charcuterie, with a fine selection of ‘piggy bits’ such as pork crackling and apple sauce or Honey Mustard Chipolatas.

The decor is shabby chic with exposed brickwork, easy leather chairs and a touch of the potting shed. All the produce is all locally sourced with New Forest pork, Hampshire cheeses and Isle of Wight tomatoes on the menu.

Their sister hotel, The Pig at Brockenhurst , is well known locally as a foodie stop. It’s well worth the 30 min taxi ride, but best to book in advance.

The Dancing Man: for real ale and pies

This micro-brewery, bar and restaurant is housed in The Wool House. This atmospheric medieval stone building once stored wool on Southampton’s quayside. Behind the bar is the micro-brewery where around 20 different beers are brewed in rotation with seven on tap at any one time.

Look out for the Pilgrim’s pale Ale and The Last Waltz, named after the song playing on the Titanic as it went down. There’s also guest beers from other local breweries. The menu is deliciously British, with pies a specialty (served with buttery mash and greens) and a popular Sunday roast.

Restaurants in Southampton on Oxford Street

If you want to find a selection of great restaurants in Southampton, head for the lively restaurant quarter in Oxford Street. It’s just a 10 minute walk from the cruise terminal.

At weekends and in the evening, the pedestrianized street has a buzzy atmosphere. You’ll also find good value lunch menus from many of the restaurants.

We especially like the lively Oxford Brasserie serving a cosmopolitan menu using local produce and Olive Tree offering classic French bistro food. The White Star Tavern , specializes in modern British cooking using local Hampshire produce.

The Duke of Wellington: a traditional pub

Looking for a cosy, traditional pub for some real ales and hearty home cooked food? Try the Duke of Wellington, opposite The Tudor House in the heart of the Old Town. The timbered building dates back to the 13th century and has been a public house since 1494 when this was just a stone’s throw from the bustling town quay.

They serve a wide selection of draught and real ales and on the menu you’ll find pub favourites. On offer are fish and chips, or steak and ploughman’s with ham or cheese.

There’s also options from the specials board and sandwiches at lunchtime. This is a good choice if you want to dip into traditional English pub culture.

While you’re exploring Southampton and other parts of Hampshire and the New Forest, look out for the following local specialties.

The wine of Hampshire

The chalk soil that characterizes much of Hampshire is ideal for wine growing and close to Southampton you’ll find some of England’s best-known wineries. The still and sparkling white and rosé wines feature on many restaurant menus.

Those made by Nyetimber and Hambledon that aim to rival the best champagne. Near Southampton you can visit the Three Choirs Vineyard at Wickham (30 min taxi ride) where they have regular tours, daily tastings in the shop. You can also have lunch in their elegant restaurant.

Watercress from Hampshire’s rivers

One of the seasonal foods that Hampshire is renowned for is the peppery, green watercress. The Watercress festival is held in the market town of Alresford every May. Watercress grows in beds that span the Itchen and Meon valleys, thriving in the clear water flowing over chalk beds.

There’s even a steam train that runs from Alresford past the watercress farms, known as The Watercress Line . This was used in the 19th century to transport watercress to the markets in London. Watercress is available all year round, but look out for it on restaurant menus in the spring and summer when it’s at it’s best.

Isle of Wight tomatoes

With a mild climate and hours of sunshine, the Isle of Wight is known for its fresh produce such as asparagus, cherries, apricots and especially tomatoes. The island is just a short ferry ride from Southampton and can be visited in a day.

Look out for the tomatoes and other produce on restaurant menus in Southampton. The glass houses and tomato growers like The Tomato Stall sell the sweet and flavoursome tomatoes through supermarkets, local delis and farm shops.

Ice Cream from the New Forest

Well you wouldn’t be on holiday, if you didn’t have an ice cream! The local New Forest ice cream produced at Lymington is widely available in shops and cafés around Southampton.

A few other artisan ice cream producers are worth looking out for while visiting attractions near Southampton. There’s a delicious selection at Sundae’s Child, who have an ice cream parlour in Romsey, and at Beaulieu chocolate studio in Beaulieu village.

If the weather is good enough, Mettricks Coffee shop would be my absolute choice. Tables outside, casual environment, totally glass walls! If the coffee and food are good, even better!
