A popular cruise along quiet waterways that can be enjoyed even in winter

Fukuoka Prefecture

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

A picturesque city in southwestern Fukuoka Prefecture, Yanagawa flourished as a castle town under the Tachibana clan, who ruled the region during the Edo period (1603-1868). The city features a network of waterways that spans a total length of about 470km, forming a unique landscape known as "Suigo” (water district). This scenic beauty inspired the great poet Kitahara Hakushu (1885-1942), who was born and raised in Yanagawa, as well as many other artists.

To enjoy this charming riverside city at its best, it is recommended to join the famous river boat tour which takes visitors along the canals of Yanagawa by the gondola-like traditional donko boat. Glide along the surface of the water and watch the beautiful scenery pass by as the boatman uses a pole to guide the boat down the ancient waterways. Take in the sound of the water gently lapping against the boat and the sight of the willow trees swaying in the wind. The scenery from the boat changes throughout the four seasons, making this tour an unforgettable experience year-round.

If you visit Yanagawa in the winter, you should definitely experience the traditional kotatsu boat, which allows you to comfortably enjoy the view from the river while warming up under a kotatsu (a Japanese heated table covered with a blanket). The kotatsu boat operates for a limited time from December to February.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

After the ride, how about indulging in Yanagawa’s local specialty? Unagi seiro mushi is a traditional dish made by placing grilled eel and thin-sliced omelette over rice and steaming it in a bamboo steamer. In Yanagawa, there are many long-established eel restaurants, each one with its own recipe.

How to get there

From Fukuoka Airport, take the subway to Tenjin Station (about 10 minutes). Walk 3 minutes to Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station, then take the train to Yanagawa Station (46 minutes).

Yanagawa River Cruise

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

The origins of Yanagawa, a castle town of 109,000-koku (a koku is a measure of rice that was used to indicate the degree of power of a fiefdom in feudal Japan), are believed to lie in a castle built by the Kamachi Clan, which ruled Yanagawa from the Kamakura Period (1185 - 1333) and into the Sengoku, or Warring States, Period (c. 1467 - c. 1600). However, Yanagawa Castle was not built in earnest until the Edo Period (1603 - 1868).

The street grids and moat grids of the town are almost exactly as they were during the Edo Period, to the extent that it is said that you could walk the streets using a 300-year-old map of the town. Explore the moats and roam the streets of the town as you enjoy the streetscapes of the Edo Period. A highlight of Yanagawa is the river cruise. Listen to the boatman's explanations of the sights and his boat songs as you cruise for about 4 kilometers through the moats for about an hour and ten minutes. There are more than 200 of these boats, called donko-bune, so you can see them plying the waters from almost any vantage point in the town. You might even see a boatman washing his donko-bune.

Unagi Seiro-mushi

Unagi Seiro-mushi is a famous local dish of Yanagawa. In Fukuoka, Yanagawa is synonymous with unagi eel. Unaju and Unadon, pieces of eel on a bed of rice, are common ways of eating unagi, but in Yanagawa, seiromushi is the preferred cuisine. A special sauce is stirred into steamed white rice, and unagi eel that has been dipped and grilled in a soy-based sauce is laid on top. Thin omelet cut into strips is scattered on top of the eel, and the whole dish is then steamed in a bamboo steamer. It is believed that this method was devised so that the whole dish could be eaten while hot, and also so that the rice would be infused with the umami flavor of the eel by steaming them together. Yanagawa has many long-established unagi restaurants, each of which protects its own traditional sauce and its own brand.

Tour of Yanagawa Hinamatsuri Sagemon

Sagemon are decorations for the Hinamatsuri Doll Festival that are unique to Yanagawa. They are believed to have started late in the Edo Period (1603 - 1868), when families would sew small figures from the scraps of old clothing and hang them up instead of Hina dolls to celebrate the first Hinamatsuri of newborn girls. The small figures included things that are signs of good fortune, such as cranes, turtles, lobsters, and a traditional doll called sanbanso. They are all made into pouches, into which items can be placed. Seven strings of seven figures are suspended from a bamboo ring, and two large embroidered balls called Yanagawa-mari are hung in the center, for a total of 51 items. This number is significant in that it is imbued with the wish of the parents that their daughter would live even one year longer in an age when people were said to live only to the age of 50.

A Day Trip from Fukuoka: A Yanagawa River Cruise & Unagi Restaurants

Yanagawa is the perfect day trip from Fukuoka, which is why we also made it our first stop on our Japan road trip. It is a small town in the Fukuoka Prefecture (Kyushu Region). Hence, you might be wondering why we’d make time to visit here. But despite its size, this town is full of character and some rather unique activities including unagi restaurants where you can try barbecued freshwater eel and a leisurely Yanagawa River cruise around the town that takes visitors to many historical sights.

Where is Yanagawa Located?

Yanagawa is located in the Kyushu Region of Japan in the Fukuoka Prefecture. This town lies about an hour south of Fukuoka City, making it a great day trip from Fukuoka!

How To Get To Yanagawa

Japan Road Trip - Rental Car with Budget Japan

Traveling to Yanagawa by Car

Since we were traveling the Kyushu region by car we chose to drive to Yanagawa from Fukuoka. The drive took about an hour on the E3 highway and had some toll roads but it was really scenic and easy to drive!

Traveling to Yanagawa by Train

The easiest way to get to Yanagawa by train is from Fukuoka City. You’ll take the Nishitetsu Train from Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station to Yanagawa Station. The trip takes about 45 minutes one way. After getting to Yanagawa Station you can easily walk through the town of Yanagawa.

Parking in Yanagawa

If you decide to drive to Yanagawa as we did, you’ll want to find parking close to the Rankan-bashi Bridge which is next to the Shogetsu Punting Station where you can experience a Yanagawa river cruise and many of the other activities in Yanagawa.

There is a parking lot located right by the Rankan-bashi bridge that offers free parking but spots are limited. You can also park by the Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station which is a 5-minute walk to the Shogetsu Punting Station.

Transportation in Yanagawa

Walking Around Yanagawa

Since the town is relatively small it is easy to walk to many attractions and it’s a great way to explore more of the shops in the town! If driving or arriving by train, the Shogetsu Punting Station (where you go for the river cruise) is easily accessible on foot as it’s only a five-minute walk from Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station.

Local Buses in Yanagawa

If you’d prefer not to walk the entire time you’re in Yanagawa, you can also catch one of the local buses or shuttles in Yanagawa.

If you do decide to ride a bus after your Yanagawa river cruise, there is a free shuttle that is available every hour on the hour from 12:00pm-5:30pm from the Rokkyu restaurant (near the exit of the boat ride). It takes you back to Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station or the Shogetsu Punting Station where the course began.

Because we weren’t able to catch the shuttle at the right time, we utilized a public bus after our river cruise to head back to our car. The public bus is available from the Ohana-mae bus stop and costs ~¥210/person to get to Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station.

Rental Bike

Since Yanagawa is a small town with many hidden places to explore it can easily be accessed by bicycle. Plus the views are really pretty along the canals, especially in the spring! There are three rental locations for bikes in Yanagawa including Nishitetu Yanagawa Station, Yanagawa Parking Ohana, and the Yanagawa City Tourist Information Center.

Cost: ¥500/day Hours: 9am-6pm daily

Yanagawa River Cruise

The hour-long Yanagawa River cruise is by far the most popular attraction in Yanagawa – especially during the spring when the canals are lined with many blooming sakura trees. This small town has become so popular with tourists and nearby locals, that it was dubbed the Venice of Japan (but with significantly fewer crowds!).

Yanagawa River Cruise

But before we go into our experience in Yanagawa, here’s a brief introduction. Yanagawa was originally a farming town in which the canals were used for irrigation. They have since been transformed into a tourist attraction where you can float down the canals in a wooden donkobune or punting boat with a local guide.

The oarsman uses a single pole to guide the punting boat through the canals of Yanagawa while providing entertainment in the form of traditional folk songs in Japanese and pointing out many iconic landmarks in Yanagawa.

There are two kinds of Yanagawa river cruises that we saw, something we didn’t know prior to our arrival. The first is called the Shared Hakushu Course. It is a leisurely sightseeing boat ride that is shared with other tourists – this is the one we went on.

The shared punting cruise started at the Shogetsu Punting Station. We went inside the station where we paid for our cruise and got in line with other visitors who would be on our shared punting boat ride .

Since it was sunny when we went on our Yanagawa River cruise I was offered a hat to borrow for ¥100. For such a low cost, I couldn’t pass that up. I definitely welcomed the slight shade I was able to get from this handcrafted straw hat because of the summer heat!

Cruising on a punting boat in Yanagawa.

Our hour-long cruise was mostly sightseeing but there was some adventure mixed in too! Some of the bridges are really short and narrow so you have to watch your head and duck. I can still hear our guide shouting “BE CAREFUL!” while also laughing as we went underneath each bridge.

We made a couple of short stops while gliding through the canals. One was a small snack shop that was serving ice cream, cold drinks, and a few other items. We also made a brief stop by the Yanagawa Castle ruins and a few other landmarks.

The private punting cruise that we saw was also a sightseeing cruise but provided a bit more thrilling entertainment and had a slightly different route. The private cruise also had much tighter corners and spaces to fit in! It also hosts fewer people if desired.

Where to Eat in Yanagawa

After a Yanagawa River cruise, there are a few more things you should enjoy in Yanagawa. The first is, LUNCH! We recommend stopping at one of the local restaurants known for unagi seiro-mushi. Unagi is a freshwater eel that is typically steamed, covered in a special sauce, and served with rice.

But in Yanagawa, the unagi is grilled and brushed with rich soy sauce over a bed of rice that has been mixed with a special sauce. It is then covered with small strips of egg omelet and placed in a bamboo steamer. This delicacy is so popular in Yanagawa you can find over 20 restaurants that specialize in it!

Popular Unagi Restaurants in Yanagawa

Most of the restaurants below have hundreds of years of history in preparing unagi in a variety of ways. A few also have a terrific ambiance with tatami mat floors and scenic views of the riverbank to enjoy while you dine. The lines at some of these restaurants can get really long, so if you’re pressed for time you can always hop over to another restaurant!

  • Ganso Motoyoshiya
  • Motoyoshiya Okinohata
  • Wakamatsuya

After lunch, consider stopping by some of the local gift shops to get some souvenirs or a drink before leaving Yanagawa. You’ll find many of the gift shops at the exit of the punting cruise. Inside the shops, there are a number of specialty local items including straw crafts and textile goods like tenugui towels. There are also food-related souvenirs such as onigiri (Japanese rice ball) with eel, fried eel crackers, shrimp crackers, and mochi.

If you are visiting Fukuoka, taking the short day trip to Yanagawa is definitely worth it for a quick river cruise and to try fresh unagi!

A scenic walk on the water! Yanagawa River Cruise in Fukuoka

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

Yanagawa City, the water town that circled the moat vertically and horizontally.

The land was laid out in the Edo period for the purpose of defending against enemies, and the beautiful ditching that still remains today is an integral part of life in Yanagawa.

Here you can experience “river cruise,” one of the most popular sightseeing experiences in Kyushu.

Why don’t you experience an hour-long trip to enjoy the seasonal scenery of the water while being guided by a boatman in the background music?

Tour: Day Tour of Dazaifu & Yanagawa River Cruise from Fukuoka

Fukuoka Kimono Rental(Dazaifu/Yanagawa)

Also, Please watch the PR video of Yanagawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture.

You can get a glimpse of the charm of Yanagawa City.

Enjoy the famous river cruise in Yanagawa City, which has the history of a castle town

Located in the Chikugo region of Fukuoka Prefecture, Yanagawa City is about 45 minutes from Fukuoka Tenjin Station on the Nishitetsu Railway.

This area, which flourished as the Yanagawa Clan, is a castle town centered around Yanagawa Castle, which was the castle of the Tachibana clan, the lord of the clan.

The Yanagawa River Cruise, which is a sightseeing tour of the town on a boat with a capacity of 24 passengers, is a specialty of Yanagawa City, as is the “steamed eel in a bamboo basket”.

This boat used on the Yanagawa River cruise is called a “ Donko boat ” because it resembles a fish goby (donko) .

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

There are four river cruising companies in the city, but this time we will go to “ Suigo Yanagawa Kanko ” where you can enjoy cruising from Shimohyakucho to Ohana, the residence of the lord of the Yanagawa domain.

We head to the “Shimohyakucho Boarding place” along Route 443.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

The fare is 1,500 yen for adults and 800 yen for children (tax included) for a 60-minute course.

We will meet at the waiting area and board with other tourists.

Well, we’re aboard!

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

From the embarkation and disembarkation area, take off your shoes and get on the Donko boat.

It was in January when I was there, so the boat was kotatsu boat! (Kotatsu boats are available until the end of February.)

There is a brazier under the table which is connected for a long time.

We are about to start our one-hour boat trip.

Today’s boatman is Hisayuki Tsumura, who was born and raised in Yanagawa.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

There was no shaking, and it was warm from the foot of the boat with a kotatsu, and even though it was January, it was not cold at all!

Getting to know other passengers is one of the best parts of river cruising.

Especially on a kotatsu boat, you will feel closer to the boat because you will be surrounded by the same table (except for the kotatsu boat, where there are no tables).

The boatman said, “Where did you come from? You’ve never been to Yanagawa before, have you?

They will show you the way to the restaurant, and tell you “Oh, in that case, you should have eel for lunch! or “How long have you been here?

The tourists on board also joined in the conversation, and it felt like the whole ship was talking to each other.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

Mr. Tsumura’s rod was used to move the Donko boat through the moat.

A willow tree protrudes from the river on the bank of the moat.

Even in winter, the view of the ditch split seems beautiful.

It is said that the lush green willow trees entertain the eyes of tourists in the fresh green season.

After about five minutes of going, a narrow sluice gate appeared.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

This is the moat gate of Yanagawa Castle.

From here, the Tachibana clan’s castle is inside and the “inner moat” is entered.

It’s 2.6 meters wide and 3.5 meters high at the sluice gate!

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

On board, I’m holding up my camera and going, “Wow! “Aaah!

From the heartwarming atmosphere we had just witnessed, there was a thrilling sense of tension!

From there, it’s another wide moat.

This is the start of the “moat tour”.

It is said to have been artificially constructed by Yoshimasa Tanaka, the feudal lord, when he entered Yanagawa Castle in the 1600s.

It is said to be set up to prevent invasion from the enemy, but that’s not all.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

It was also built as a countermeasure against water damage.

Water of moat is also used for agriculture, fire prevention, and until a long time ago, it was also used for laundry and other daily necessities, so it has been an integral part of the lives of Yanagawa residents.

It’s a part of life that plays an important role for the people of this community.

By the way, if you connect all of these sections together, it’s 930km!

Since the distance between Tokyo and Osaka is about 500km, it is amazing to think that it is like a round trip.

Thrilling to go through 13 bridges! There’s also a place where you can listen to the boatman sing

We went through the sluice gate earlier, but there are 13 other bridges to go through on the course.

This is where the boatman shows off his skills!

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

They will sing to you on the long bridge while you cross it.

“Songs of river cruise”, “Yanagawa Ondo”, “Yanagawa Kouta”… Already, this is a truly stunning singing voice!

I wonder if “singing ability” is a requirement for the boatman.

There’s an echo under the bridge, all right? says the boatman, laughing.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

Although he wasn’t under the bridge, he performed a total of four songs.

Listening to the singing is one of the best parts of this river cruise.

You may pass other Donko boats on the way!

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

The ages range from 18 years old at the bottom to 80 years old at the top.

It’s fun to meet a new river cruising experience every time you come, because the guides and talks on the boat are different.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

It’s also fun to make a stop at the “floating shop”

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

At the halfway point, you’ll find the “waterfront shop Ichigo Ichie”, which sells take-out gourmet treats like coffee, sweet sake and snacks.

This is a drive-through on the water, so to speak!

It was in January when I visited, so I gave up on the idea, but I heard that beer is popular during the summer.

This time, I bought some recommendations from the waterfront shop, namely, the deep-fried rice cake and the mentai chikuwa (200 yen each, tax included).

It’s a luxury to be able to eat on the ship!

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

Both the fried rice cakes with sweet and spicy sauce and the spicy chikuwa  with the crunchy texture of mentaiko are very filling and delicious.

They also had a variety of other items on the menu, such as amazake(sweet sake) and ice cream.

I recommend using the waterfront shop.

When you get to the highlight, you’re like, “Here’s your chance for shooting!”

Each company has a different river cruising course, but the highlights are almost identical.

Each time, you would say, “That’s Namikura on the left,” or “That’s the elementary school where a popular actor is from.

Each time, the boat is filled with laughter.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

A literary monument to the writer Dan Kazuo. My father’s parents live in Yanagawa.

An hour flies by!

We were laughing and taking pictures when we already reached the last stop, “Ohana”.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

Ohana” is the residence of the Tachibana family, the former lord of the Yanagawa clan, and the whole site is designated as a national scenic beauty spot as “Tachibana clan garden”.

The house is open to the public and has a restaurant, so it’s perfect for dining and sightseeing.

Ohana is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

The river cruise is operated one way.

After disembarking, you can take a leisurely sightseeing tour and walk back home, or a free shuttle service is available.

“Yanagawa River Cruise” is recommended during the year

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

You can enjoy the four seasons of Yanagawa river cruising: cherry blossoms in spring, iris in early summer, a cool boat with a lighted tunnel in summer, a moon boat and autumn leaves in autumn, and a kotatsu boat in winter.

No matter when you visit, you’ll find your first view.

The most popular of these is the Yanagawa Hinamatsuri Festival Sagemon Meguri, an annual Hinamatsuri event held from February 11 to April 3.

The whole town is decorated with Hina matsuri festival ornaments called “Sagemon” (Hina’s hanging ornaments), which are unique to this area.

During this period, the “Hina Meguri Boat” will also run to see dolls decorated on the shore, which can be seen from the water.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

On March 18, 2018, the “Ohinasama Water Parade” was held, with beautifully dressed children parading on the water in a donko boat.

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

On the last day of the festival, April 3, the two-month event comes to a close with the Nagashihina Festival, in which the participants write their dreams on Hina Tanzaku and pour them into the river.

It was built over 400 years ago.

This composition of the water, filled with the wisdom of our predecessors, still entertains us today as a “Yanagawa river cruise”.

The scenery and expressions that vary from season to season, the warm interaction with the boatman and the people on board, the rustling of the trees and the sound of birds…

Everything about the Yanagawa River cruising is the charm of the trip, and although it’s only an hour long, it’s sure to give you even more memories of your trip.

If you come to Yanagawa, please try it.

Have Fun on Virginia Waterways with These Riverboat Tours and Cruises

odyssey boat cruise on DC waterfront

See the Potomac or James rivers from a new perspective with these adventures.

By Bennett Freeze June 20, 2024

Looking for something new to do this summer? A boat cruise is an entertaining way to spend time with friends and family or grab brunch with a view.

Two prime locations for these adventures are the Potomac River near Washington, DC, and the James River near Richmond. These riverboat tours offer everything from close encounters with bald eagles to Fourth of July dinners to cruising the canals of Richmond. While most tours offer shelter from the elements, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

Those sensitive to seasickness should perhaps opt for a shorter experience. Always book a cruise in advance, and don’t forget sunscreen if you plan to spend time on the deck. Make sure to plan where you’ll park the car ahead of time — most embarkments will have public parking with street parking close by.

If you’re planning on making the drive down to Richmond, be prepared to spend a whole day, and that means considering meals for your group. Most cruises and riverboat tours offer refreshments of some kind, but some are BYOB, so be sure to verify ahead of time if you want food or drink during your tour experience. Always make sure to arrive more than 15 minutes before the start of your tour.

For a memorable experience, try one of these riverboat cruises.

Potomac River

For a family-friendly cruise:  , boomerang boat tours  .

Set off from Washington Harbour in Georgetown for a scenic tour perfect for taking in the monuments and the National Mall with family. As you sail down the Potomac, you’ll see landmarks as far south as Reagan National Airport. The experience is an hour long and offers light prepackaged snacks as well as a cash bar. Parking is available at Washington Harbour at $12 an hour, and street parking can be found nearby. 3050 K St. NW, Washington, DC, starting at $20

For a romantic sunset cruise:

Capitol river cruises  .

At dusk, take in the breathtaking views of Washington, DC, embarking from Georgetown on one of Capitol River Cruises’ Nightingale vessels. Starting at the Key Bridge, the tour sails south down the Potomac so that you can capture the perfect golden hour selfie. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and is ideal for a first or second date. 3050 K St. NW, Washington, DC, starting at $30

For a boozy cruise:

City experiences  .

History may be fun, but a bottomless mimosa brunch is even more so. Enjoy a chic, spacious setting with a chef-prepared buffet-style lunch and panoramic views of Washington, DC. The dress code calls for cocktail attire such as slacks, button-up shirts, blouses, and skirts. City Experiences offers many themed cruises, including a Fourth of July fireworks cruise, a dinner cruise, and a VIP tour of Mount Vernon. There are several parking garages near The Wharf for your convenience. The cruise lasts two hours and runs on Saturdays and Sundays. Pier 4, 580 Water St. SW, Washington, DC, starting at $95

James River

For a nature tour:  , discover the james bald eagle tours  .

See the national bird in its natural glory. This riverboat tour sails south of Richmond to Jefferson’s Reach, an area with over 350 pairs of mated bald eagles. Learn about conservation efforts to protect the Bald Eagle’s habitat in both two-hour and three-hour tours throughout summer and fall. Embrace your inner ornithologist before the birds migrate in September. 9950 Hoke Brady Rd., Richmond; 9525 Deep Bottom Rd., Henrico, starting at $95

For a narrated history tour:

Riverfront historic canal cruises  .

Depart from the Turning Basin for a family-friendly narrated history tour up the James and Kanawha Canal along the Richmond Canal Walk. The canals, initially envisioned by George Washington with construction beginning in 1789, were once predominantly used for commerce. If you don’t want a narrated tour, private charters are also available. 139 Virginia St., Richmond, starting at $15 (adult 13 and older), $8 (children 5 to 12 years old)

For a BYOB party cruise:

Sea suite tiki club cruise  .

Kick back and relax at Richmond’s only BYOB floating tiki bar. The cruise is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday and can accommodate up to 30 people. Feel free to mingle with strangers-turned-friends or charter in advance for a company party. Public voyages tend to last 1 hour 45 minutes. 4708 Old Main St., Richmond, starting at $45

You can experience BLINK in a unique way this fall while riding along a BB Riverboat.

BLINK, the nation's largest light, art, and projection mapping experience, is returning to Cincinnati this fall.

The widely popular BLINK festival returns this year. The last festival took place in 2022.

So, what is BLINK exactly? It's an outdoor art phenomenon with 100 installations, including large-scale projection mappings, murals and interactive light sculptures and art. The city will literally be glowing — from luminous facades to twinkling alleyways.

Organizers announced this year's event will expand into Newport, Kentucky, further lighting up the riverfront on both sides of the Ohio River.

They will also be bringing back the drone show they launched during the 2022.

BLINK's Director Justin Brookhart also hinted at a "first-of-its-kind" installation that will be making its debut this year. Brookhart described it as a "bridge of light" connecting the two sides of the river with an 100-foot-long array of laser lights stretching from Covington Landing to Sawyer Point on Cincinnati's riverfront.

BB Riverboats is offering a unique way to view the festival as you cruise down the downtown riverfront.

The cruise will offer drink specials, live music from one of their house bands and a front-row seat for the festival.

The cruise runs until Oct. 17 with boarding starting at 6 p.m. for the first ride and 8:30 p.m. for the second.

Tickets are $39 for adults and $29 for children.

6 Top Boston Harbor Cruises

Venture on the water to explore Beantown's waterfront, maritime history and more.

Exterior shot of the Boston Odyssey on the water with the Boston skyline in the background.

Courtesy of City Cruises by Hornblower

Boston is the most populous city in New England – and for good reason. This Massachusetts metropolis may host modern shopping, dining and cultural attractions , but Boston is built upon a rich American tapestry created over the centuries that's still visible in its quaint neighborhood streets and stone houses. The city's historic harbor along the Massachusetts Bay set the scene for a significant portion of Boston's story; once the site of Revolution-era protests like the Boston Tea Party, this body of water is now primarily used for revelry. No visit to Massachusetts' capital city would be complete without some time on Boston Harbor.

If you'll be in Beantown during the warmer months, consider boarding a schooner for an hour or two of sightseeing. Cruises on the harbor offer a range of historical tours, romantic dinners, unique brunches with friends or even the chance to spot some endangered whales. Whether you opt for a tall ship or a smaller vessel, soak in city views and enjoy your time on the water with the following top Boston Harbor cruises.

Boston Harbor City Cruises by Hornblower – Boston Harbor Whale Watch Cruise

Price: Adults from $70; kids from $50 Duration: 3-4 hours

Hornblower's City Experiences brand offers a wide variety of land-based and on-the-water tours. One of the most popular options is its whale watching cruise, which it operates with the New England Aquarium . From Boston's Central Wharf, you'll head to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, one of the world's most active marine sanctuaries. Whales in the region include humpbacks, minke whales, the endangered right whales and more. You can also try to spot sea birds, dolphins and other marine life. Travelers say the boat tour is great fun and most report seeing whales on the trip.

Tours generally run daily from spring through fall. Exact departure times vary by season. You'll want to arrive at least 15 minutes early and take some medication if you're prone to motion sickness. If you plan to pair this cruise with a trip to the aquarium, you can book a combo ticket to save a bit of money. Boston Harbor City Cruises also runs a variety of dinner cruises.

Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships – Boston Harbor Day Sail

Price: Adults from $55; kids from $35

Duration: 90 minutes

Board a schooner from the Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships and sail Boston's historic harbor in fitting style. Your tour begins by embarking on the Liberty Star, which boasts a 76-foot mast. The crew is happy to answer questions about Boston during the sail, but know that there is no narration during the tour. Travelers delight in both the tour and the boat, noting excellent views.

The fleet sails Boston Harbor from summer through early fall. Sails typically depart several times each day in the afternoon; however, specific times may vary depending on the day of the week. You can also hop onboard for a brunch cruise, a fireworks cruise or for the yearly USS Constitution turnaround sail.

Classic Harbor Line Boston – Northern Lights Sunset Cruise

A Classic Harbor Line Boston boat sails against the sunset.

Price: From $45 Duration: 2 hours

Along this evening tour, you'll be treated to skyline views as the sun dips below the horizon. During the journey, you'll also learn a little about Boston's history and its best sites such as Fort Independence, the USS Constitution , Old North Church's steeple and more. Refreshments are available for purchase onboard. Travelers approve of the cruise – especially the gorgeous ship – and its staff.

Departure times and days vary depending on both the sunset and the season. Keep in mind that ticket fees will be slightly higher in the high season. The company also hosts a number of themed and food cruises, such as holiday cruises and a trip that focuses on beer and barbecue.

Boston Duck Tours

Price: Adults from $52.99; kids from $37.99

Duration: 80 minutes

It's nearly impossible to visit Boston and not run into one of its renowned Duck Tours. This type of amphibious automobile was originally created as a military vehicle for World War II. The vehicles used today by Boston Duck Tours are uniquely designed to roll past city sights like Boston Common , the Old North Church and the Fanueil Hall Marketplace before or after launching into the Charles River for views of the Cambridge and Boston skylines. Past customers remember these unique tours as one of the best parts of their visit – and as a special draw for kids, the tour guides may allow children to briefly steer the boat in the water for a particularly memorable experience.

Trips depart from the New England Aquarium, Museum of Science and the Prudential Center; tour prices are the same regardless of departure point. Tours run in the warmer months, usually from late spring to fall. It's a good idea to book online in advance to secure your preferred tour time.

Massachusetts Bay Lines – Boston Harbor Moonlight Cruises

A Massachusetts Bay Lines boat on the water.

Price: Adults from $28; kids from $15 Duration: 90 minutes

Referred to locally as Mass Bay Lines, this company runs an after dark cruise that travelers say has excellent views of the city lit up. If you're in need of refreshment, you'll find drinks (including alcohol) and snack onboard for purchase. For an extra special evening, sign up for a Full Moon Cruise, which takes place once per month from May to October.

Tours run a few times a month and generally start at 9 p.m. The company also runs daytime harbor cruises and themed cruises that welcome dogs onboard.

Charles Riverboat Company – Charles River Sightseeing Tours

Price: Adults from $27; kids from $18 Duration: 70 minutes

After cruising through the harbor, why not explore another Boston waterway? Along the historic sightseeing cruise of the Charles River, you'll see some of Cambridge's best sights like Harvard University and MIT , as well as Boston University, and the Back Bay neighborhood. The crew will offer tidbits and trivia during the tour. Tourgoers enjoy the outing and several mention that the company is great if booking a private charter for a large party.

Tours run late May though the end of September at 12:30, 2 and 3:30 p.m. If you wish to explore the Boston Harbor and the Charles River in the same trip, consider signing up for the company's Architecture Tour.

Tours of the Fox River on hold as River Tyme Tours looks to sell company, boats | The Buzz

riverboat ride in yanagawa river cruise

APPLETON - River Tyme Tours , formerly Fox River Tours, will not operate this season, and the company announced it is looking to sell.

For seven years, River Tyme Tours has provided its customers with boat tours along the Fox River on either of its two boats: River Tyme, a 55-foot riverboat and River Tyme Too, a 46-foot canal boat.

Some of the river tours it offered included the Summer Sunset tour, the Grand Locks tour, a July 4 fireworks cruise and it was also bookable for private charter trips.

On June 12, the company announced on its Facebook page and website that it would not be operating this summer as it looked for new ownership.

"Thank you for sharing so many memories on the river with us and we are sorry for the sad news, we will miss you," the Facebook post said.

All tickets have been fully refunded.

Owner Candice Mortara's retirement, according to a news release from the company, is why it is time to sell.

"River Tyme Tours has served the Fox River for seven years and Candice has loved every minute of it but it is time to disembark, time for her to retire from the tour business," the news release stated.

Those interested in taking over Fox River Tours should contact Jonathan Rubin at [email protected].
