Taylor Swift 1989 World Tour Concert Birthday Weekend

After seeing our excitement first-hand and hearing all about our experiences at the two Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Shows in Santa Clara, and the final three Fare Thee Well Shows at Soldier Field , my daughter Natalie knew that there was only one thing she wanted to do to celebrate her twelfth birthday — see Taylor Swift in concert .

WooHoo! I love Taylor Swift!

While she has been to several theater shows and musical performances, ranging from local productions to full blown Broadway shows, she had never been to a concert . With the concert happening at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara in only a few weeks, I arranged to send Carter to my parent’s house and Brian once again hit up StubHub and found us three awesome seats near the front of the lower bowl. He also booked a room at the closest hotel we could find to Levi’s Stadium so we didn’t have to drive back late at night. (What a great Dad!)

Our next order of business was finding Natalie a concert outfit. We first looked online for some tees, but it was too close to the show to get them in time, so we headed to the mall for a cool, boho inspired outfit. After we hit several stores, we finally found exactly what Natalie was looking for at American Eagle Outfitters! She got a beautiful, light-weight, print kimono, a headband, a tank top, and some jewelry to add some bling.

Taylor Swift Birthday Weekend

We all were pretty excited to see Taylor Swift in concert, even Brian .

The Dead shows this summer were awesome, but let’s be honest, every show was just the guys standing on stage for hours playing — there was no talking and no theatrics, just great music. Brian and I were looking forward to seeing a completely different style concert, with dancers, special effects, and talking. And we were happy to be there for Natalie’s first concert experience , especially since both Santa Clara concerts were sold out.

The day of the concert, we dropped Carter off at my parents’ house, headed to Santa Clara, checked in to the Avatar Hotel — a boutique hotel with hip, modular furniture, bold colors, retro candy, and an impressive robot collection — and took a nap. We then met up with our close friend Melanie Mabry (who is way more like family) for a late lunch at Bennigan’s . She was in town from Cal Poly for the concert too, and it was her birthday, so we were excited to be able to celebrate with her!

I met Melanie when she was born and babysat her and her sisters throughout high school, was a nanny for her mom when I started college, transitioned to working for her mom’s advertising agency as a designer, and then when I had my own kids, hired her to babysit for me until she left for college. She is an amazing young woman!

After dinner we got ready for the concert and because the Avatar Hotel is only a mile from Levi’s Stadium, we walked to the concert . I was never so happy to be walking to and from a venue in my life.

It was a Friday evening, Levi’s Stadium is in the middle of a business park, and traffic was a nightmare. A huge number of concertgoers missed the opening acts because of it, and don’t even get me started on the mess of cars after the show. Staying at a hotel close to the stadium and walking in was the best decision of the night — it only took us 15-20 minutes!

Taylor Swift 1989 World Tour Concert

The Stadium was overflowing with tween and teen girls , and a large number of adult women in “Shake It Off” tanks and tees, families, groups of men (weird), and couples on dates. Natalie was on cloud nine, especially when she checked out our seats. Dad did good, really good.

It was super hot, so we first grabbed some bottled water and snacks, noticed one huge difference between this show and the Dead shows this past summer: The beer lines were non-existent. We then grabbed Natalie a concert tee and a commemorative photo book of the tour, checked out the photo stations, walked around the stadium, and marveled at all of the over the top fans dressed in costumes. We also found a really nice group of girls with handmade signs, who let me snap a photo of Natalie with our favorite sign!

The signs. OMG the signs. Swifties are intense and everywhere you turned there was a girl with a giant poster board sign and they held them up constantly. All I could think was that there had better not be someone with a giant sign sitting in front of us. Thank goodness there was a dad with four girls in front of us, none of which had signs.

The show kicked off with Sean Mendes who I knew from the Disney Channel, followed by Vance Joy who I had never heard of. Vance Joy was good, but most of his songs all sounded the same, and I liked Shawn Mendes way better. Natalie said that’s pretty much the consensus among her friends too.

When Taylor Swift finally took the stage, the stadium packed with 50,000 fans went crazy — and when they weren’t screaming, they were singing at the top of their lungs, and Natalie and I were singing and dancing right along with them!

Throughout the night, Swift performed 18 songs, with most of them off her 1989 Album, including our favorites Blank Space , Style , Bad Blood , and Clean . She was flanked with giant screens, a group of male dancers, and special effects, including a catwalk that rose into the air and rotated during the Shake It Off finale. The best special effect of the night was the wristband action. Wristbands were taped to every seat in the stadium (you can see them in the photo at the top of this post). Inside the wristbands were an LED light that was remote controlled to change colors or blink to the music throughout the show.

Seeing all 50,000 audience members wave their wristband clad arms in the air, colors changing in unison to the music , was pretty spectacular. Plus, once the concert was over they became touch activated so you could use it at home.

Swift was a pro performer, consistently striking poses throughout the show so the audience could snap great photos. She put on a fantastic and entertaining show, singing, dancing, and playing both the guitar and the keyboard. But the thing I appreciated the most as a mom was the time she took to talk to and connect with the audience.

She is clearly a role model for a huge contingent of tween and teen girls, and between almost every song she either took the time to speak intimately (well, what felt like intimately) to her fans, or to show video messages from her friends for the audience — and all of it centered around self love, self confidence, girl power, healthy relationships, and friendship. She shared personal stories and was encouraging, supportive, and overwhelmingly positive.

I really couldn’t ask more as a parent.

The surprise of the night was the special guest who joined Taylor on Stage. I knew she invited other musicians to join each show on tour, but I had no idea who it would be for our show, and I didn’t tell Natalie. She was absolutely giddy when Fifth Harmony took the stage to perform their current #1 hit Worth It with Swift joining in.

Overall, the concert lasted just about two hours. We made it out of the stadium quickly and were back to our hotel in no time!

The next morning we checked out and decided to grab brunch before heading home. When we were here for the Dead shows , we had the best brunch at Village California Bistro and Wine Bar in Santana Row , and I wanted their Egg Bruschetta again! Brian again ordered the Smoked Salmon Bistro Eggs Benedict and Natalie had the french toast — and we all cleaned our plates. Yum!

50,000 pack into Levi's Stadium for Taylor Swift 1989 world tour

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- Tens of thousands of fans packed Levis Stadium Friday night for the first of two sold out Taylor Swift concerts.

Swift proved Friday that music can bring so many people together, fans from all ages, all walks of life, came out to let their hair loose and have fun.

It's a dream come true for Taylor Swift fans.

"I'm shaking right now. Can't wait," said fan Kaitlyn Ortegel.

More than 50,000 fans packed Levis Stadium to see Swift front and center performing songs from her hit album 1989, named after the year she was born, on her world tour. The sold-out concert brought out fans of all ages.

"Taylor Swift, she's so cute and so entertaining and so wholesome and so refreshing. She's the best," said Debbie Schafgans of Danville.

Swifties say you can't help but the love the artist for her spunk and for simply being inspirational.

"I really like how she just puts it all out there and kind of doesn't care what the haters say. She's a really great role model," said Elisabeth Welzien of San Ramon.

That's all the more reason one dad says he didn't mind every penny he spent on this unforgettable experience for his daughter and himself.

"There are three families and the dads, of course, we financed it. We're still making payments, we took money out of the college fund to do this," said Dirk Welzien of San Ramon.

Santa Clara police have issued a traffic advisory for both days.

Heavy traffic and delays are expected for highways 101, 237 and 880, as well as surrounding areas.

Vance Joy and Shawn Mendes are special guests for the Swift's The 1989 World Tour .

1989 World Tour: Santa Clara, California (Night 2)

Taylor performed a second sold out night at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California last night! She brought out Little Mix as a special guest to perform their song “ Black Magic “. During “ Style “, she had Julia Roberts and Joan Baez strut down the catwalk. For the acoustic portion of the show, she sang “ Never Grow Up “. Taylor Swift’s Star-Packed ‘1989’ Tour: Relive Every Cameo

Taylor Swift  has spent the better part of the past five months bringing her masterful 2014 album,  1989 , to the masses. Swift's gigantic pop production — winding down Saturday in Tampa, Florida — has criss-crossed the United States, as well as parts of Europe, but the star has taken pains to distinguish the trek from your run-of-the-mill stadium spectacle, sprinkling her shows with surprise guests from across the musical spectrum.

Swift has paired with everyone from rising stars like the Weeknd, Fetty Wap, Sam Hunt and Rachel Platten, to established peers like Lorde, Nick Jonas and Selena Gomez, and celebrated veterans like Miranda Lambert, Justin Timberlake and Mick Jagger. If previous Swift album cycles were marked by overwrought discussions about which ex a song was calling out,  1989 has been first and foremost about friendship. Swift and her audience are not separate entities, but fellow partygoers: She reacts to the presence of her guests with the same incredulity as the crowd.

Tracking Swift's revolving door of  1989 guests was as much a pastime this summer as baseball or trying to ignore Donald Trump. To date, 35 of Swift's 61 North American shows have featured at least one surprise guest, with some featuring two or three, plus an assortment of friends, who walked a lengthy catwalk alongside Swift during "Style." For those hoping to relive that magic moment — or for fans at guest-less shows still stricken by FOMO —  Rolling Stone has compiled a complete rundown of the cameo-crammed tour.

Dan Reynolds, “Radioactive” in Detroit

Taylor Swift's first North American show in Bossier City, Louisiana, was a guest-less affair. So was night two in Baton Rouge. Eight days — and one quick jaunt to Norwich, England for a spot at Radio 1's Big Weekend festival — later,  Swift served her first  1989 tour surprise: Dan Reynolds, who pumped his fists with Swift as they traded vocals on Imagine Dragons' 2012 track, "Radioactive."

Little Big Town, “Pontoon” in Pittsburgh

Despite a dramatic, all-encompassing turn to pop on 1989 , Swift is always ready for the country: In Pittsburgh, she brought out Alabama outfit Little Big Town for their 2012 Number One, "Pontoon," an ode to on-the-water revelry with a delightfully cheeky hook — "Out here in the open/Mmmmm-motorboatin'." Swift's backup dancers even came out in swim trunks and goggles, and some were wrapped in unicorn inner tubes.

Echosmith, “Cool Kids”; Rachel Platten, “Fight Song” in Philadelphia

Over two nights in Philadelphia, Swift shone the spotlight on the next crop of pop superstars. During her first show, she brought out Echosmith's Sydney Sierota  to perform the group's breakout single, "Cool Kids." And on night two, she was joined by Rachel Platten. The pair belted Platten's empowering, piano-driven smash, "Fight Song," Swift gazing like a proud peer as the rising singer handled the track's stirring bridge on her own.

The Weeknd, “Can’t Feel My Face” in East Rutherford, NJ (Night One)

Swift broke out the big guns for her first show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In addition to a duet with the Weeknd on his summer hit, "Can't Feel My Face," the pop star welcomed the U.S. women's national soccer team to walk the catwalk during "Style" with their World Cup trophy . Topping it all off, Swift assembled a sizable chunk of her girl gang, including Lily Aldridge, Lena Dunham, Gigi Hadid and Hailee Steinfeld to join her for "Bad Blood."

Nick Jonas, “Jealous” in East Rutherford, NJ (Night Two)

Swift didn't disappoint her New York–area fans at her second show at MetLife. "Style" featured another array of friends including Candice Swanepoel, Lily Aldridge, Uzo Aduba, Karlie Kloss, Behati Prinsloo and Gigi Hadid; but the night's big guest was Nick Jonas, who lead a bombastic rendition of his soulful pop hit, "Jealous."

Lorde, “Royals”; Jason Derulo, “Want to Want Me” in Washington, D.C.

After her star-packed New York stand, Swift kept things relatively simple in Washington, D.C. On night one, friend and pop prodigy Lorde hit the stage for "Royals," while the following night featured Jason Derulo. The R&B singer dutifully took the reins of the propulsive "Want to Want Me," getting so wrapped up in the heat of the moment his shirt mysteriously vanished by the end of the song.

Andy Grammer, “Honey, I’m Good”; Sam Hunt, “Take Your Time” in Chicago

On her 2011  Speak Now tour, Swift welcomed burgeoning blue-eyed pop singer Andy Grammer to the stage for a rendition of his breakout single, "Keep Your Head Up." Four years later, she trotted Grammer out again on her first night in Chicago for a performance of his equally infectious 2015 single, "Honey, I'm Good." The next night, Swift gave some shine to rising country crooner Sam Hunt, who parked himself next to Swift for a duet of his fetching, half-rapped ode to slow, simple love, "Take Your Time."

Walk the Moon, “Shut Up and Dance”; MKTO, “Classic” in Foxborough, MA

With "Fight Song" and "Can't Feel My Face" already under her belt, Swift continued to plow through the various tracks vying for song of the summer 2015. Walk the Moon's slow burner, "Shut Up and Dance" peaked at Number Two on the Hot 100 this July after being released in September, 2014, and Swift and frontman Nicholas Petricca offered an outsized rendition of the ebullient earworm. She replicated that same energy with MKTO the following night during a sizzling performance of the duo's 2014 song-of-the-summer contender, "Classic."

Nico and Vinz, “Am I Wrong” in Vancouver

The 1989 tour rolled into Canada with Norwegian duo Nico and Vinz joining Swift on stage for their 2014 track "Am I Wrong. The song's thumping percussion and achingly triumphant hook wouldn't sound out of place in Swift's own set list, and the pop star adapted easily to the track, slinking around the stage and smiling widely as she sang with the duo.

Fetty Wap, “Trap Queen” in Seattle

The love song that warmed hearts across the world this summer was given the duet it always deserved when Swift teamed up with Fetty Wap for his beloved breakout, "Trap Queen." Swift kept the romantic vibes going later, when she walked the catwalk during "Style" with the Pacific Northwest's cutest couple, Ciara and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

Fifth Harmony, “Worth It”; Little Mix, “Black Magic” in Santa Clara, CA

Girl groups ruled during Swift's two-night stop in Santa Clara, California. At her first show, Swift welcomed Fifth Harmony for a performance of "Worth It," easily nestling into her role as the sixth harmonizer on the group's silky, bombastic, horn-laced single. The next night, U.K. vocal quartet Little Mix took the stage for a sugar-coated rendition of "Black Magic."

Kobe Bryant; OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, “Counting Stars” in Los Angeles (Night One)

The 1989 world tour parked itself at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for a whopping five nights at the end of August, and the run found Swift achieving a notable milestone: Sixteen sold-out shows at the famed venue — a number equal to the NBA Championships banners hung by the Los Angeles Lakers. Fittingly, Lakers star Kobe Bryant was on hand during night one to raise a banner in Swift's honor. The show also featured a musical surprise for good measure, with OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder hitting the stage for "Counting Stars."

Uzo Aduba, “White Horse”; Mary J. Blige, “Doubt” and “Family Affair” in Los Angeles (Night Two)

While not all of Swift's guests have been musicians, Orange Is the New Black star Uzo Aduba doubled down on her East Rutherford catwalk cameo and coaxed a deep cut out of Swift in Los Angeles. Aduba revealed a set of deep, gorgeous pipes as she took lead on  Fearless  hit "White Horse" while Swift plucked at her acoustic guitar and delivered backup vocals.

Later, Swift brought out Mary J. Blige for something old and something new: First, "Doubt," from Blige's 2014 effort, The London Sessions , then the still swinging "Family Affair." Capping it all off, Swift welcomed "Blank Space" video star, Sean O'Pry to the stage for "Style,"  though he also had to share the catwalk with Matt LeBlanc and Chris Rock.

Alanis Morissette, “You Oughta Know”; Natalie Maines, “Goodbye Earl” in Los Angeles (Night Three)

Night three in Los Angeles found Swift paying tribute to two Nineties heroes, the Dixie Chicks and Alanis Morissette. First, Swift showed she hadn't lost her country twang, stringing out and punching up her drawl alongside Natalie Maines on the Dixie Chicks' boot-stomping "Goodbye Earl." Later, Swift and Morissette scorched the stadium — and exes everywhere — with a devastating performance of the latter's breakup anthem "You Oughta Know."

Noted Swiftie Ellen DeGeneres closed out the proceedings in characteristically ridiculous fashion, donning a sparkling silver jumpsuit to match Swift's shimmering dress as they walked the catwalk together on "Style."

Beck and St. Vincent, “Dreams”; John Legend, “All of Me” in Los Angeles (Night Four)

Swift cobbled together a delightfully unique collaboration for her fourth night at Staples, welcoming Beck and St. Vincent for a performance of the former's recent single, "Dreams." The driving pop-rock cut marks a significant turn from Beck's mellow Morning Phase  LP, but the musician relished sharing stadium spotlight with Swift as St. Vincent slashed away at the song's crunchy, funked-out guitar riffs. Later, Swift slowed things down with John Legend, who commandeered the pop star's piano and led the way during a stunning duet on his tear-jerking power ballad "All of Me."

Selena Gomez, “Good For You”; Justin Timberlake, “Mirrors”; Phoebe Buffay, “Smelly Cat” in Los Angeles (Night Five)

The final night of Swift's Los Angeles stand belonged to a little-known coffeeshop singer-songwriter: Phoebe Buffay. Or rather, Lisa Kudrow, who reprised her Friends  role for a performance of Buffay's beloved Central Perk smash, "Smelly Cat."

The night also featured two slightly more well-known musicians: Selena Gomez, who stopped by for a rousing rendition of her tortured slow jam "Good for You," and Justin Timberlake, who took the stage for his devotional paean "Mirrors."

Omi, “Cheerleader”; Avril Lavigne, “Complicated” in San Diego

Swift did not slow down after her five-night L.A. takeover. Three days after her final Staples Center gig, and a few hours south on Interstate 5 in San Diego, she brought out Omi for another summer 2015 anthem, "Cheerleader." Swift also invited Avril Lavigne up for a performance of her 2002 breakout hit "Complicated," a still perfectly pained jam that proves the cup of teen angst will never run dry.

Wiz Khalifa, “See You Again” in Houston

The 1989 tour settled into its fourth month, and the final weeks of summer, in Houston. Swift once again surprised her fans with another recent ubiquitous hit, calling to the stage Wiz Khalifa, who helmed his  Furious 7 hip-hop power ballad, "See You Again." Swift dutifully stood in for the song's co-writer, Charlie Puth, belting the aching, striving chorus he sings on record.

The Band Perry, “If I Die Young” in Indianapolis

Swift offered another nod to her roots in Indianapolis, strapping on a sparkling acoustic guitar and joining the Band Perry for a rousing rendition of their hit "If I Die Young." The song's delicate instrumentals and musings might seem out of place for a massive pop production like the 1989 tour, but Swift and the Band Perry deftly reconstructed the track as a stadium-sized tearjerker.

Echosmith, “Cool Kids” in Columbus, OH

Echosmith singer Sydney Sierota earned the unique distinction of being the only performer to take the stage twice, in two different cities on the  1989 tour (save Uzo Aduba, who performed one night, and strutted the stage during "Style" the other). Sierota re-teamed with Swift in Columbus, Ohio, several months after her initial cameo in Philadelphia, delivering another infectious rendition of Echosmith's breakout hit, "Cool Kids."

Dierks Bentley, “Every Mile a Memory” in Kansas City, MO

Swift kept the country vibes going in Kansas City, welcoming Dierks Bentley to the 1989  party to breeze through his 2006 hit "Every Mile a Memory." Bentley and Swift traded lines and coalesced for harmonies, switching up the lyrics — "Red sun down, over a Kansas City sky," Swift bellowed — for some perfectly acceptable pandering to the hometown crowd.

Steven Tyler, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”; Kelsea Ballerini, “Love Me Like You Mean It”; Alison Krauss, “When You Say Nothing at All” in Nashville (Night One)

With country clearly on her mind, Swift was did not disappoint the Music City crowd at her highly anticipated homecoming concerts in Nashville. On night one, Swift proved she's still tapped into the country world with a rousing duet on "Love Me Like You Mean It" with rising singer Kelsea Ballerini. But she also paid tribute to  vaunted veteran Alison Krauss  with a performance of the musician's 2002 track "When You Say Nothing at All." For good measure, Swift also welcomed recent Nashville transplant Steven Tyler, who helped her belt Aerosmith's endlessly eye-watering Armageddon  anthem, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

Mick Jagger, “Satisfaction”; Leona Lewis, “Bleeding Love” in Nashville (Night Two)

Swift switched musical directions during her second night in Nashville, but her guests were far from disappointing. The star first welcomed Leona Lewis for a performance of Lewis' devastating 2007 ballad "Bleeding Love." Then Swift served up one of her biggest surprises of the 1989 tour so far: Mick Jagger, who peacocked on stage for "Satisfaction" — much to the delight of one grandma in particular .

Nelly, “The Fix” and “Hot in Herre” in St. Louis

Hometown hero Nelly served up a double shot during his appearance in St. Louis , first pairing with Swift for a duet of his sultry, Marvin Gaye–sampling new single, "The Fix." But the house truly came down during "Hot in Herre," which featured an appearance from Haim, who closed out their run as  1989  tour openers that night. While Nelly breezed through the 2002 hit, the sister act and Swift dished out the indelible hook and some expertly choreographed dance moves.

Keith Urban, “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16” and “Somebody Like You” in Toronto (Night One)

Keith Urban joined Swift at her first show in Toronto, proving country that clicks both Down Under and up in the Great White North. The pair teamed up for two performances, first kicking out Urban's latest single, "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16," which they followed with the musician's 2002 Number One "Somebody Like You."

Charli XCX, “Boom Clap” in Toronto (Night Two)

Despite canceling some tour dates this summer so she could focus on new music, Charli XCX gladly hopped back onstage with Swift at her second concert in Toronto. The pair took a shot at pure pop perfection and easily hit the mark with a bombastic rendition of XCX's 2014 smash "Boom Clap."

Ellie Goulding, “Love Me Like You Do” in Arlington, TX

Swift has enlisted Ellie Goulding   to surprise her audiences on previous tours, so it's no surprise that the British singer eventually took the stage when her path crossed with the 1989 tour. The pair tackled "Love Me Like You Do," Goulding's summer hit from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack , belting its indelible, amorous hook over a chorus of bombastic synths.

Miranda Lambert, “Little Red Wagon” in Greensboro, NC

Swift delivered another country hit in the midst of her pop bonanza, welcoming bona fide badass Miranda Lambert to the stage to perform her killer Platinum  single "Little Red Wagon." Swift looked happy to let Lambert take lead on the fierce track. She jumped in with some of her own backyard swagger but primarily sat back and marveled as one of country's contemporary masters did what she does best.

Tove Lo, “Talking Body” in Atlanta

Swift is well aware of the unique knack Swedes have for making killer pop, having worked extensively in recent years with Stockholm-based mastermind Max Martin. In Atlanta, Swift welcomed another Swedish star in her own right , burgeoning synth-pop singer-songwriter Tove Lo, who had the crowd howling with a performance of her sensual, slow-burning "Talking Body."

Pitbull, “Give Me Everything”; Ricky Martin, “Livin’ La Vida Loca” in Miami

Swift took her talents to South Beach for the penultimate show of her North American trek, doing everything to delight the hometown crowd short of bringing out Will Smith for "Miami." First, NBA star Dwyane Wade presented Swift  with her own Miami Heat jersey — number 13, of course — and soon after, the pop star was joined by Miami native Pitbull for a performance of "Give Me Everything." Saving the best for last, Swift welcomed Ricky Martin, who came out to a frenzied crowd and the still-transcendent opening horn riff of his 1999 hit "Livin' La Vida Loca."

Taylor Swift Brings Fifth Harmony On Stage, Announces She Wants To Join The Group.

Every morning we wonder if our Instagram and Twitter feeds will be filled with posts from Taylor Swift gushing about her surprise guest (or guests) that joined her on stage the night before at her 1989 World Tour. It's become expected at this point no matter how much we love her. While we thought we had passed the point of shock and awe, we were wrong because last night in Santa Clara, California, Taylor brought out Fifth Harmony and we are still very much freaking out.

This is how it all went down: During the show, Taylor came out on stage wearing a blue sequin crop top and skirt, designed by costume designer Marina Toybina that devoted Swifties would notice is not one of her typical tour costumes. She continued to say that she borrowed the outfit "from a friend" hinting that her surprise guest was someone she knew well. She then proceeded to bring the girls out on stage to sing “Worth It” for a crowd of 68,000 fans.

In their matching blue outfits the six of them strut down the catwalk like total bo$$es.

The best part was when Taylor joined in on their choreographed group dance moves, making her an honorary member of the squad. After the show Taylor even confessed on Twitter she officially wants to join BFF Camila's group.

We are totally in favor of Taylor joining Fifth Harmony. Or at least all of them doing a duet together. Who run the world?! These girls do.

Taylor Swift's best surprise guests on her never-ending 1989 tour, ranked

All year long — and seemingly all our lives — Taylor Swift has been welcoming her friends, idols, and everyone in between to the stage for her 1989 world tour. The guest appearances have been at turns inspired and confusing, ranging from the Weeknd to Imagine Dragons , Justin Timberlake to her "Bad Blood" model crew , girl groups like Little Mix and Fifth Harmony to Chris Rock and Matt LeBlanc . Even Ian McKellen recently revealed that he and best friend Patrick Stewart got an invitation to the 1989 stage, but had to turn it down due to prior commitments.

As Swift said at her show in Santa Clara on August 15:

"Any artist that you see on the 1989 world tour stage is here because they wanted to be, out of the goodness of their own heart. They wanted to be here to perform for you, and to surprise you. This means they came here for free. This means they could've been doing anything else...but they wanted to be with you. They're here because they love you, and that's such an incredible honor."

Swift's claim that all the 1989 world tour guests wanted to be there "out of the goodness of their own heart" is a lovely sentiment, but I have a feeling that everyone walking the "1989 runway" is less interested in pleasing fans than in absorbing the incredible attention the moment affords them. Swift is one of the biggest pop performers on the planet. Any friend of hers is a friend of millions.

(Thank god Sirs Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart have each other.)

As for Swift, I believe she is thrilled to welcome each and every one of these people to the stage. Every time she introduces a new guest, she throws her hands up like she's on a roller coaster, giddy with some combination of excitement, triumph, and power. Whatever the motivations for the guests — fun, publicity, a "what the hell" lark — one thing is abundantly clear: Taylor Swift is having the time of her life.

To save you the trouble of going over her dozens of guests, here are the eight most memorable surprise appearances from Taylor Swift's 1989 tour — so far, anyway.

8) Joan Baez and Julia Roberts (Santa Clara, August 15)

There are so many questions about this pairing, who went onstage together at Swift's Santa Clara concert to dance along to "Style." Did they know each other beforehand? Is this part of a blood pact neither remembers making in the '90s? How many people in that stadium were appropriately heartbroken to get a Joan Baez appearance instead of a Joan Baez performance ?

So, okay, this isn't one of Swift's "best" surprises, but you can't beat it for the sheer "Why is this happening?" factor. The Baez/Roberts pairing also highlights another important demographic of Taylor Swift's guests of choice, namely the "We're doing this for our kids" quadrant. Many give Los Angeles grief for its smog and entertainment-obsessed industries, but the city's best revenge is its proximity to just about every major star. Ergo, and to be upfront: LA is disproportionately represented on this list. (Swift also played there for five nights in a row.)

After confusing everyone by bringing out LeBlanc, she made a more understandable Friends choice the next night with Lisa Kudrow, who appeared (barely) in character as the folk-singing Phoebe Buffay.

Swift was visibly thrilled. She told the stadium with a wink that this guest "has only ever played in coffeehouses" before they strummed acoustic guitars in tandem for a stadium sing-along of Buffay's biggest (and only) hit, "Smelly Cat." The only thing that could have made it more of a trip for Friends fans would be if they did a breakdown à la the recorded version of "Smelly Cat," which was decidedly more pop than its folksy predecessor.

For as much pop star power as Swift wrung out from Los Angeles, she also brought out an act that confused much of her stadium audience. Beck joined Swift to perform his latest single "Dreams," with guitar goddess St. Vincent accompanying. Videos show much of the floor audience blinking in confusion at the runway instead of dancing along.

This is a shame, because Beck and St. Vincent's performance on the Staples Center stage is rock solid. Beck matched the stadium's energy by jumping up and down like an excitable teen at his first concert. St. Vincent (a.k.a. Annie Clark) accompanied him on her angular new Eddie Ball signature guitar . Every so often, Swift noticed that St. Vincent was standing off on her own and went over to lean a friendly elbow on her shoulder. St. Vincent is a documented Swift fan , but she eventually had to shrug her off to strut down the runway and rip her guitar solo to shreds.

It was glorious.

5) Fetty Wap (Seattle, August 8)

Fetty Wap exploded on the radio this summer with his single "Trap Queen." While he just won the 2015 VMA for Best New Artist, he performed in Swift's stadium like he's been doing it for years. He was totally unconcerned with the crowd as he slid all over the enormous 1989 stage, which fit right in with the straightforward confidence of "Trap Queen."

When recounting the tour night with Fetty Wap on Instagram, Swift claimed that he left her "unable to find [her] chill." After watching videos of the performance, she was absolutely correct. She did her best to keep up, mouthing the words and striding down the runway in her thigh-high boots in her best impression of a model walk. For the most part, though, she just let Fetty do his thing.

4) Mary J. Blige (Los Angeles, August 23)

Blige joined Swift on the stage to sing "Family Affair" and her new power ballad "Doubt." All Swift could hope to do was let her soar. For all her best efforts to join in, Swift probably knew she couldn't match Blige's vocals, and so she largely kept her part to clapping and throwing her hands in the air (a Swift staple ).

Blige's energy was infectious. Her belting filled the enormous Staples Center as she sang the song's climactic affirmation:

Now you're looking at a leader Now you're staring at a queen You said I'll never be someone But now I'm pulling all the strings.

Can't imagine why Swift likes this song so much. Still, nice moment.

3) The US women's national soccer team (East Rutherford, New Jersey, July 10)

Taylor Swift and the 2015 Women's World Cup champions. And Heidi Klum.

The week after winning the World Cup, the US women's soccer team joined Swift for a victory lap. This is one of the most purely fun surprise appearances on the tour, as the team grinned from ear to ear and soaked up the warm reception from the audience of New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. They even managed to upstage supermodel of the world Heidi Klum as she worked the catwalk, which, despite Donald Trump's best efforts to denigrate Klum's current appeal, will always be a feat.

As for Swift? She got to hold the trophy.

2) Natalie Maines (Los Angeles, August 24)

As Swift ascends higher and higher into the glitzy world of pop stardom, it's always a little jarring — in the best way — when she reaches back to her country roots. Swift is so comfortable in the country world that her voice noticeably settles when she allows it to twang. So it's unsurprising her Natalie Maines introduction gushed with praise for the Dixie Chicks frontwoman, whom she cited as a vital influence on her early musical aspirations:

"If not for this woman and her band, I would not have known that you can be quirky, and fun, and yourself, and outspoken, and brave, and real...I wouldn't have dreamed the things that I dreamed, and I wouldn't be on this stage today."

The two women then broke out into the Dixie Chicks' revenge fantasy song "Goodbye Earl," which was also apparently Swift's "go-to talent show song."

This appearance therefore accomplishes two important things: 1) Maines gets to fill a stadium with her astonishing powerhouse of a voice, and 2) we get to imagine a tiny Swift strutting around a fold-out stage while trilling, "Well, it wasn't two weeks after she got married that / Wanda started gettin' abused / She put on dark glasses and long sleeved blouses / And make-up to cover her bruise..."

(Note: "Goodbye Earl" is a very strange choice to sing through a talent show grin.)

1) Alanis Morissette (Los Angeles, August 24)

Swift tends to take her time introducing her guests. She builds up the anticipation, starting from a conspiratorial whisper before revving up to a grand announcement in the bombastic style of a circus ringleader (which, well, she kind of is). To pump up the crowd for Morissette's impending arrival, Swift prowled the stage in a leather catsuit and intoned:

"She inspired a generation of confessional female singer/songwriters, who all of a sudden felt like you could actually say these raw feelings that you had. You could actually sing about your real life, you could put detail into it. You could get really really mad if you wanted to."

This is just a very good summation of Alanis Morissette's appeal. Also, Swift sells the hell out of it. There's no way she could care deeply about every single guest on her tour, but this moment echoes her adoration for Maines in its sincerity. Swift has built her career on confessional songwriting, so it's genuinely touching to see her paying tribute to a woman who both popularized and challenged the genre.

Then Morissette emerged from the floor, singing "You Oughta Know."

Of all the songs off her smash album Jagged Little Pill , "You Oughta Know" is perhaps the most explicitly angry. "You Oughta Know" tells the story of heartbreak through rage-induced tears, a feeling Swift came closest to capturing with "Blank Space." "Raw" is absolutely the right word.

Watching Swift and Morissette belt the song together is startling, then exhilarating. It's exactly what every surprise 1989 world tour appearance should be like — though it will be harder to thrill people when they come to expect something so great every time.

Swifties pack Levi's Stadium for night 2 of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour

Tens of thousands of Swifties were in Santa Clara Saturday for night two of Taylor's Swift's Eras Tour at Levi's Stadium.

On Friday night, Taylor Swift broke the stadium’s 11 p.m. curfew and she did it again on Saturday night.

In addition to the Bay Area, fans travels from other parts of California including Sacramento and Clovis.

Taylor Swift brings Eras Tour to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara

But in the sea of swifties wearing sequins and cowboy hats, some were met with disappointment as they tried desperately to buy last minute tickets in the parking lot. Grayson Rodemsky flew all the way from Atlanta to try to see the concert. She found one ticket on twitter but now believes she got scammed.

"I was trying to get a ticket and I found one for $175 and now the money has been sent and the person is not responding. So, I don’t have a ticket,” she said.

Those hoping for a price drop were out of luck too. Even minutes before the concert began, some tickets were still selling online for more than $15,000.

Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid’s Full Friendship Timeline

But who cares about boys? Here’s Swift and Hadid’s full friendship timeline.

August 2015

It’s not entirely clear when they first crossed paths, but they notably posed together at the 2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party alongside Ireland Baldwin, Karlie Kloss, and Jaime King.

A few months later, the pair was seen walking around the hills of Los Angeles, having a heart-to-heart.

Shortly after, Hadid made an appearance in Swift’s iconic music video for “Bad Blood” as “Slay Z.”

After filming the sequence, Hadid told People what to expect: “A lot of badass-ness—just the craziest thing you will ever see. I can’t say much, but it’s gonna be epic.”

After spending time together in L.A., the friends went to New York City to walk the streets with model Martha Hunt. Swift even shared a shot of the three of them together with a still from the music video, captioning it, “On tonight’s episode of ‘Not Purposely Trying to Recreate Music Videos, Just Going Out For Indian Food.’”

At the very end of the month, Hadid made an appearance on stage at the 1989 World Tour in Detroit with Hunt, joining for Swift’s song “Style.”

She took the stage again at the end of June, this time in London with Martha Hunt, Kendall Jenner, Serena Williams, Karlie Kloss, and Cara Delevingne.

Hadid attended Swift’s famous annual Fourth of July party in 2015. Hadid shared a Polaroid picture of herself taken at the event in a red bathing suit. She held a classic red, white, and blue popsicle.

And of course there was a group photo.

Hadid and most of the cast of “Bad Blood” assembled with Swift at the VMAs that year as well.

In March, Hadid shared a snap of her and Swift singing along to Grease: Live , which included Joe Jonas in the cast. He has dated both Swift and Hadid.

“We’re also performing Grease Live in the living room,” she wrote to her followers.

On Fourth of July in 2016, the group wore matching onesies.

In September, the friends stepped out in New York City with Hadid’s then-boyfriend, Zayn Malik . Swift was wearing a silk maxi dress from Hadid’s Tommy x Gigi collaboration.

While being interviewed on Today , Hadid talked about Swift’s recent Halloween party, which included guests like Hunt, Camila Cabello, and Kennedy Rayé. She said they snacked on guacamole, pizza, and chips and that she wore a Cub Scout costume while Swift was dressed as Deadpool (who is played by her friend Blake Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds).

“I had a really, really intense costume planned, and then I was like, ‘Maybe I’ll save it,’” she said . “I found a Cub Scouts shirt in Japan at a vintage store. I made a costume out of it!”

In a profile in Harper’s Bazaar , Hadid talked about how she was too busy to constantly expand her circle of friends, so she enjoys being with Swift.

“The time I do have off, it’s not even enough to give everyone I love attention. I’m good with [the friends] I’ve got,” she explained

Swift was also interviewed for the story and shared, “As a friend, Gigi is one of the first people I go to for advice. She has this incredible ability to see all sides of a situation and simplify it for you, to see the complexity of people.”

She added, “Gigi’s #1 rule is to treat people the way she’d want to be treated, so she’s on time (or early) to work, says hello to everyone on set, asks them how they are, and actually listens to their response.”

Hadid was filmed dancing to “Don’t Blame Me” from Swift’s album Reputation at another concert. She shared pics of the event in her Instagram Story, writing, “ I’m so proud to experience this celebration of clarity and strength with you. WHAT A SHOW. You did it again. Love you to the moon.”

At a New Year’s costume party, they both dressed up as Disney characters, with Swift costumed as Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Hadid as Mary Poppins. Reynolds and Lively were also at the party.

Hadid watched Swift perform with Dua Lipa, SZA, and Becky G at the Prime Day concert in New York City.

At another VMAs, the girls spent time with Hadid’s sister, Bella.

Swift revealed in 2019 that Scooter Braun and Big Machine Label Group co-founder Scott Borchetta stopped her from performing her older songs at the American Music Awards. Hadid wrote in a now-deleted tweet, “Scott and Scooter, you know what the right thing to do is 🙏🙏Taylor and her fans deserve to celebrate the music!!”

Hadid shared a picture from her Friendsgiving, which included Swift, Hunt, and Queer Eye’ s Antoni Porowski. On her Instagram Story, she wrote, “Friendsgiving this week :) love you all sm.”

And she celebrated Swift with a loving Instagram post for her 30th birthday.

Hadid shared a picture of her daughter, Khai, with what looks like a blanket made by Swift.

For her 31st birthday, Hadid shared a picture of them on her Instagram story, with a caption reading, “Happiest 31st Year. My T! Wish we could be together to celebrate. Love you so much.”

In an interview with Vogue , Hadid shared that Swift didn’t just make Khai a blanket, she made her a whole teddy bear.

“It’s misshapen, and she called it Ugly Bear,” she joked. “She had one when she was little.”

Hadid threw a dinner to celebrate the launch of her new luxury cashmere brand, Guest In Residence, at Le Chalet in New York City. Swift was there along with Bella, Emily Ratajkowski, Tan France, and Edward Enninful.

In a TikTok video shared by @broookeff, Hadid answers the question, “What is your favorite song off of the new Taylor Swift album?”

The question referred to Midnights , and the model said she favored “Snow on the Beach.”

“Probably ‘Snow on the Beach’ because it reminds me of Taylor’s house in Rhode Island in the winter, and it just makes me think of good times,” she explained. “Even though, you know ... it could be a song about a lot of things, but I love that it makes me happy.”

Swift and Hadid went out to dinner in New York City with Blake Lively, plus sisters Alana, Danielle, and Este Haim. The outing came just a few weeks after Swift’s confirmed breakup with actor Joe Alwyn .

That same month while chatting with InStyle , Hadid revealed Swift was an “exceptional cook,” especially her “really good bolognese sauce” and “really good chili.”

“I love to cook, but it’s also such a treat to get cooked for,” Hadid said. “And when you have friends that really also care about those special moments and the more intimate spaces and what can really come from putting an effort into making the time for that, I think that that’s when you start to find the friends that you really connect with because you’re both working towards manifesting those really special moments.”

Hadid attended Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Nashville with Matty Healy, Lily Aldridge, and Abigail Anderson Berard, and Ashley Avignone. In a video posted to X, formerly called Twitter, Hadid can be seen walking backstage.

While walking the red carpet for the Met Gala that month, Hadid joked she was in her Reputation Era.

And she was on hand again for an Eras Tour show a few days later.

The friends had dinner together at Nobu Downtown and were photographed walking arm-in-arm .

Hadid attended Swift’s concert in Santa Clara, California, with celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta.

Hadid and Bradley Cooper were romantically linked in 2023, and a source told The Mirror , according to Page Six , that Swift lent out her Rhode Island home to the new couple for a romantic getaway.

“Taylor is a total romantic and loves playing cupid for her friends,” claimed the insider. “Even though Gigi and Bradley have their own properties in New York, they wanted somewhere more private to spend time getting to know each other, and Taylor was only too happy to help. She said the door to her home is always open for them to use.”

Hadid, Swift, Sophie Turner, Selena Gomez, and Brittany Mahomes all went to dinner together in New York City.

That month, a source told Us Weekly , “One of the reasons Gigi hasn’t attended any of Travis’ games is because she doesn’t agree with the way Taylor has been acting with [him]...She feels like Taylor is doing too much, too soon.”

But Hadid almost immediately shut down those rumors.

She commented on a Perez Hilton Instagram, saying she was a “couple days late” to the gossip. She added, “Didn’t the press try this last week w Selena? Let it be.. we are all over the moon for our girl. Period.”

Swift, Hadid, Kelce, and Cooper spent a holiday weekend together. According to People , Kelce’s mom, Donna, said at QVC’s Age of Possibility summit that her son sent her a picture of the foursome in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

Hadid, Cooper, and Kelce were all in Paris in May for Swift’s Eras Tour international leg.

A source told Entertainment Tonight that the friends are “so happy” their partners get along, adding, “Taylor and Gigi have always been extremely close, but being in love simultaneously and having these similar and shared experiences has been so much fun for them.”

Taylor Swift always has a trick up her sleeve — or nay, wardrobe . During the European leg of her Eras Tour, the singer continues to mix up the colors of her Roberto Cavalli crop top and short skirt sets for the 1989 act. She even mismatched her custom Christian Louboutin ankle boots à la Carrie Bradshaw .

However, while performing in Lyon, France, on June 2, Swift deviated from her recent pattern by sporting a (gasp!) matching set for the 1989 era. Naturally, some fans think this could be yet another clue pointing to her next album, despite the fact that her newest album, The Tortured Poets Department , is only a month old.

Taylor’s New Monochrome Look

While performing in Lyon, Swift wore her first coordinated 1989 ensemble of the European leg, donning a glittering orange crop top and an ombré orange short skirt. The monochrome vibe continued down to her footwear, with Swift choosing orange Louboutin ankle boots rather than mixing up the colors.

Swift has worn both orange pieces before as part of mismatched looks. She paired the ombré skirt with a yellow crop top on May 12 in Paris to represent boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Chiefs colors , since he was in the audience that night. The Orange Theory

Swifties have long speculated that orange would be the color of Swift’s next album, since she has subtly incorporated orange into the Eras Tour since opening night in March 2023, and the color has not represented any of Swift’s eras before. This turned out to be false for Tortured Poets (its color is predominately white ).

However, when the tour resumed in Europe on May 9, Swift doubled down, debuting a new orange-tinged leotard and blazer for the Lover era and incorporating orange into the 1989 looks.

Swift’s new orange looks are causing fans to speculate (again) that the color will indeed represent her next album , with some fans linking it back to the popular Karma theory . Besides being a Midnights track, Karma is also long suspected to be the name of Swift’s “lost album” that fans think she started recording before she pivoted into what became her 2017 album Reputation.

“Karma” was written in orange graffiti in her music video for “The Man,” which fans have used as proof that she will release her “lost album” at some point, perhaps alongside Reputation (Taylor’s Version) . But whether Swift’s use of orange is an Easter egg for Karma, an entirely different album, or nothing at all, she’s likely already planting clues for her next project.

Politicians urge Taylor Swift to postpone L.A. shows in solidarity with striking hotel workers

"Stand with hotel workers and postpone your concerts," the letter reads.

Taylor Swift 's Eras tour has been an unstoppable juggernaut, with Swifties around the world breaking Ticketmaster and causing earthquakes . However, there are now calls to stop the tour, at least temporarily.

Eleni Kounalakis, lieutenant governor of California, and dozens of other officials signed a letter on Tuesday, urging the "Shake It Off" singer to postpone upcoming Los Angeles concerts in solidarity with striking hotel workers.

"I stand with Unite HERE in their fight for a living wage," Kounalakis told Politico in a statement. "And I hope we can use this moment to bring attention to the hardworking men and women who are the engine of our economy."

Wherever Swift's tour has gone, good fortune for hotels has followed , with some "doubling and tripling what they charge because you are coming," the letter says.

"Hotel workers are fighting for their lives," the letter continues. "They are fighting for a living wage. They have gone on strike. Now, they are asking for your support. Stand with hotel workers and postpone your concerts."

The Eras tour is set to begin a run of six sold-out concerts at SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles on August 3, the final U.S. dates of the tour. Swift has not made any public remarks about the request, and representatives did not respond to EW's request for comment.

"Speak now!" the letter, similar to one striking workers published in the Los Angeles Times in July, concludes. "Stand with us and postpone your concerts."

The strike — helmed by Unite HERE Local 11, which represents more than 32,000 hotel workers — began on July 2 with requests for better wages and health care benefits, high pension contributions, and more reasonable workloads. The union's contract with more than 60 hotel chains, including Marriott and Hilton, expired roughly a month ago. However, a deal was struck with Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites prior to the strike.

Earlier this year, 96% of union members voted in favor of authorizing the strike. Many hotel employees have been part of the strike, including cooks, room attendants, dishwashers, servers, bellmen, and front desk agents, according to the Associated Press .

"Our members were devastated first by the pandemic, and now by the greed of their bosses," union co-president Kurt Petersen told the AP in July. "The industry got bailouts while we got cuts."

Kounalakis, who has announced a run for governor in 2026 , is the most high-profile politician to sign the letter. It was also signed by Majority Leader Isaac Bryan, State Senator Dave Min, State Senator Maria Elena Durazo, Burbank Mayor Konstantine Anthony, Santa Monica Mayor Gleam Davis, and many others.

Kounalakis attended the Eras tour previously in Santa Clara, per their Twitter account .
