The Long Drive is developed by Genesz. While the developers put an emphasis on the graphics and game mechanics , the storyline is not as developed. The point of The Long Drive is to discover the open world with your car . Since the plot is not entirely built out, you can create your own adventure.

The game does not confine you to your car; you can get out and walk around  any area that you see. The Long Drive allows you to venture with your car or by foot to gas stations, mountains, and more. The highlight of the game is the pleasurable driving experience.

The gameplay lets you do real-life activities , like adjusting the review mirror , getting gas , etc. Additionally, since your car can slowly degrade, you can upgrade your car to look better with tools like a rust brush, shine spray, and more. The materials usually accompany the car at the beginning of each game.

If you miss the maintenance items, then you can find the tools in random places while you drive. Your car can store objects that you come across, like rearview hangers, toys, etc. The game features a bus and moped that you can dismantle to customize your car with parts that fit.

The Long Drive allows you to perform mechanical activities like opening the hood and changing parts, like tires. A survival element is present in TLD since you can get basics like water at landmark locations. The Long Drive is more focused on the appearance and maintenance of the car than on your survival.

Is The Long Drive endless?

The Long Drive is an almost infinite driving experience that takes you through over 3,000 miles of roads on barren lands with abundant sand and sparse vegetation. While the land is relatively flat, you can find hills to jump from in your car . However, the physics of the game have been called not realistic because the vehicle seems to float   above the ground at times.

Items in your car often get dispersed on the road. In case you crash , you can damage yourself and the vehicle. The seeming endlessness of the journey is supported by the sustainable gas tank that can last around 300 miles , which lets you stress less about the tedious task of getting gas. 

TLD features dawn, day, dusk, and night scenes . The scenery is daunting during the night since the darkness makes driving more difficult. While the gameplay of TLD seems kid-friendly, certain objects in the game make the game slightly inappropriate for children to play. Nonetheless, the game is a refreshing change compared to violent first-person-shooter games or grotesque survival games, like Rust .

The Long Drive is set in first-person view for the majority of the gameplay; however, you can span the view out to watch the car from a third-person viewpoint. In case you move mirrors around in the game, you can catch glimpses of your character.

An ease-filled driving adventure

The Long Drive does not have a sense of urgency since the game does not feature missions or levels . While TLD may seem endless, the road ends after 3,000 miles. Landmarks are available along the way to let you reload on important items like gas and water. The Long Drive is a lonely road trip through an endless desert

Welcome to the infinite sandy wilderness.

One of the weirdest genres to emerge on PC is the shitty old car simulator. I'm talking about games like Jalopy, Road to Guangdong, and My Summer Car, which see you exploring evocative locations in rusty, unreliable old automobiles that you have to periodically fix, flip over, or top up with fuel.

And now you can add The Long Drive to that list, a bare-bones but strangely compelling Early Access driving sim set in a vast procedurally generated desert. It's still in development, so there isn't much to do but drive , but there's something hypnotic about this endless, sandy wasteland.

Start a new game and you'll find yourself in a garage, getting ready for your trip into the dunes. You can top up your gas tank and load the trunk with water, because you're gonna need to stay hydrated in a forever desert.

I like how this preparation stage gives you a sense of embarking on an exciting, dangerous road trip, although the controls are clumsy and the physics are kinda twitchy at the moment. I keep idiotically dropping stuff or accidentally pulling the doors off my car. But the game's survival systems aren't fully in place yet, so a lot of this is just role-playing at the moment anyway.

Luckily, I don't care about survival: I just wanna drive long distances in silence. One of my favourite things to do in open world games is grab a car and aimlessly drive around the map enjoying the scenery. I have a couple of hundred hours logged in various truck simulators for the same reason.

The Long Drive scratches the same itch, and I find cruising along those lonely highways an enjoyable way to spend 30-40 meditative minutes. The almost minimalist aesthetic of the desert, and the deafening silence except for the howl of the wind, is surprisingly atmospheric. Especially when the sun begins to set, draping the wasteland in burning red light and long shadows.

Stick to the roads and you'll occasionally run across an old abandoned house or a roadside gas station, in which you can scavenge for new car parts, fuel, and other survival supplies. When you're low on fuel and limping along on your starter motor, seeing the silhouette of a building ahead is a relief.

You can even yank bits off other cars and attach them to your own, and as you play your vehicle slowly becomes a Frankenstein's monster of mismatched parts. There are dusty highways to follow, lined with electricity poles, or you can go off-road into the infinite desert where you'll find strange rock formations and towering mesas. But if you badly damage your car out here, or run out of fuel, you'll have a hard time making it back to the road.

The Long Drive has a long way to go, and games like Jalopy offer a similar, but more fully-formed experience. But the bones of something really interesting are here, and I'm intrigued to see how the developer builds on them. I just hope the purity of the driving remains the priority, rather than the survival elements, because we have enough of those games on PC already.

If you've ever wanted to drive a clunky little car through an eerily deserted expanse of long highways and seas of sand dunes, then The Long Drive is the answer to your very specific prayers. I'm not sure if it's quite worth the $10 asking price yet, but this could be one to keep an eager eye on.

This is a road trip game in an almost infinite random generated desert . The focus is on freedom , driving , exploration and immersion . It has minimal car maintenance and survival elements.## Infinite Desert, Freedom and Driving:

There are no invisible walls or unable to jump over small fences, or blinking red "wrong direction" signs on the hud. The car won't need 10-20 liter fuel over just only a few hundred meters , with a full tank, you could go approximately 500 kilometers . If you see a distant big mountain , you can go there and if you are capable, you can climb it. If you don't like where the mirrors are facing you can adjust them however you want or throw them away while driving at full speed . If you want to lean out of the car, or closer to the radio or near anything, you can .

Americans are tired of flying .

According to a recent study by Advance Auto Parts , 70% of the US population is more likely to take road trips this year than last to avoid air travel stress.

Another recent study by the Vacationer found that 196 million Americans plan to drive to their destinations this summer.

When it comes to American road trips , I'm no newbie. From the Southwest to the Northeast, I've traveled more than 20,000 miles to destinations around the US.

When it comes to packing up the car , I've certainly made some mistakes. I've forgotten important items and longed for essentials that I didn't even think of.

But 300 hours and more than a dozen trips later, I think I've mastered the art of packing for a road trip . Here are the things I'll always bring with me, no matter the destination.

I often forget to pack motion sickness medicine on road trips and stop for some on the way.

I've always been prone to motion sickness , but even if you're not, driving through the mountains could make you feel queasy.

I hate that I need caffeine to stay alert, but that's where I'm at.

On a road trip, I prefer Mio Energy, a flavorful boost to add to water, because it keeps me hydrated.

I download playlists and podcasts to keep myself entertained.

When you're driving on open roads, you never know when you'll lose service.

I've always road-tripped with other people. And as someone who values alone time, packing headphones is the only way to get it in a cramped car.

For introverts like me, using headphones allows me to take breaks from socializing. 

Especially when road-tripping with others, comfy shoes feel essential to sustaining my good mood.

I typically wear cozy shoes that slip on and off easily. 

Another mood booster for me is a clean car.

From empty food containers to candy wrappers, a road trip can quickly make a car messy. So don't forget to bring a small trash can or bag to keep things tidy.

Don't forget wipes — especially when eating in the car.

When something spills or your hands are sticky, you'll be glad you packed them.

And lastly, don't forget a camera to capture those stellar American landscapes.

Of course, there are other essentials for road trips , like emergency gear, sunglasses, and a  reusable water bottle . But the items on this list have helped me make a long, bumpy ride go smoothly.
