In a matriarchal world, a stay-at-home husband’s routine is disrupted when his rebellious childhood friend comes to visit and begins questioning the unfair treatment of men.

In Lagos, a stay-at-home husband and father named Obinna nervously awaits the arrival of his childhood friend Eze, who’s been living in America for the last eleven years. Obinna is married to Amara, a managing director at a bank, and they have two children. In preparation for his friend’s arrival, Obinna watches American news and learns that the Supreme Court has voted to uphold a law that prohibits male masturbation. The act is illegal in Nigeria, though most men still do it.

Obinna has always admired Eze for being handsome and outspoken. In college, Eze read some of Obinna’s poetry and encouraged him to keep writing. Eze’s father was once an actor, but his wife made him quit because she believed actors were promiscuous. His father didn’t have a life after that. Having seen his father’s misery, Eze says he will never marry.

On the day of Eze’s arrival, Obinna worries about how his friend will respond to his new life. As the houseboy Emmanuel prepares breakfast, Obinna admits that he thinks the boy is coming on to his wife. Amara reads in the news that Nigeria’s new Oil Minister will be a man. She questions this decision, insisting that other countries won’t take a male minister seriously. Obinna agrees. He realizes that he misses talking with his wife like this. She’s been more distant lately, and he suspects she’s having an affair with her secretary. She’s had affairs before and doesn’t try to hide the evidence. Once, he bribed her driver to tell him where she went at night. He even told her family about the affairs. Still, they argued that it wasn’t Amara’s fault and told Obinna to appreciate what he had. He’s never discussed the matters with Amara.

Eze arrives, and they slip back into their old friendship. Eze confesses that the real reason he came home is to try an herbal remedy for his prostate. Modern medicine ignores issues that affect only men. Obinna confesses that Amara won’t let him have a job because it would make her look bad. Eze thinks this isn’t fair. He asks Obinna why he stopped writing poetry, and Obinna tells him it’s because Amara discouraged him.

When Amara is called away again for business, Eze suggests they go to a club. Obinna is skeptical but agrees. At the club, they’re hit on by many women, and Obinna feels attractive and desired again. On the drive home, the police stopped them, and one of the officers commented on Eze’s provocative outfit. Obinna tells the officers they’re married and went to a birthday party. The police let them go.

At home, Obinna’s children aren’t in their beds. He suspects the houseboy has abducted them. Then he finds his children asleep on the floor in Emmanuel’s room, safe and sound. Eze tells Obinna that he probably blamed the houseboy because he feels guilty for doing something for himself. Obinna disagrees. His life has been disrupted. He can’t wait for Eze to leave and for his wife to come home.

A sort but compelling story about the power of gender norms on society. I enjoy this a lot and will defentley have to look in to this author further. The narrator was also spot on.

Once again, Chimamanda gets straight to the point! What is supposed to be a story about a friend’s visit actually bring us to the women's reality in men's character. Brilliant!

different/strange one

This book is about gender roles being reversed. A successful businesswoman and her husband who’s a stay at home husband. To be honest, I feel like this book was a whirlwind. I didn’t really listen/pay attention to it as I listened to it as an audiobook. I didn’t think this book really enticed me, being a short book, I think it lacked with detail. Overall, I wouldn’t read this book again. It was quite disappointing and the plot could have had so much potential.

Adichie is a Goddess

What a clever short piece of feminist writing. By inverting the gender paradigm she so cleverly shows the hypocrisy surrounding important issues such as women’s health, politics, workplace inequality, misogyny etc. I would love one of these releases a week for eternity.

An Afrofuturist short story trio (part 1)

The Visit (Black Stars #1) by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The Black Pages (Black Stars #2) by Nnedi Okorafor

Clap Back (Black Stars #5) by Nalo Hopkinson

I was struggling with my Goodreads reading goal until I came across this short story collection, Black Stars . This Amazon Original contains six afro-futurist novellas from Black authors. I’m only reviewing three since I had limited kindle unlimited borrows. I’m sure some of you can relate to this problem. 🙂

With more headlines sections, we learn that the fashion line’s memories were a total hoax. And even worse, the nanomachines don’t disappear as advertised. They are replicating and seeped into the water source. So random people absorb them and have the urge to spout random faux quotes. I can see the inspiration from the Elizabeth Holmes scandal. It’s a biting commentary on how her technology was overpromised and not vetted. Hopkinson skips the story further into the future where police brutality finds Wenda’s granddaughter. Her granddaughter is tempted to revive Wenda’s project. She discusses it with a holographic AI based on Wenda’s memories. The ending is open-ended leaving the reader to ponder the morality of using nanorobots for political activism. This was my favorite (so far) of the collection. Hopkinson cleverly brings together hoodoo magic and technology to comment on white supremacy and racism.

the visit chimamanda

The Black Pages (Black Stars #2) by Nnedi Okorafor was my final read in the collection. This story uses the Djinn myth to comment on the recent burning of books by terrorists in our modern times. We meet Faro as she is freed from her book prison in a burning Timbuktu library. They have killed the library director for mouthing off. Before Faro runs away in her human form clothed in blue beads, she spies a mysterious black book outside the library. She goes to grab it but says she knows they will find each other. The village is in chaos as the French arrive to fight Al Qaeda. That’s when we meet Issaka. He has come home early from America where he’s in grad school. He just wants to catch the bus to reunite with his family. He arrives home to learn his father and uncles have spirited away the ancient library books. This paints a target on their home, which Issaka is shocked to learn. He tries to use his iPad but notices a weird blue bead icon. The same bead we see earlier on Faro. When he clicks it, the djinn spirit reveals herself but Issaka doesn’t want to believe. He used to see magical things when back home in Africa. Turns out that’s because his family is the descendants of those who originally imprisoned Faro. They know of the ancient texts and legends. His mother hints at this but is interrupted when the terrorists arrive. Things descend into violence as one could predict. Issaka escapes to the desert with Faro and the black paged book. He must protect the words and continue his family legacy. As a book lover and Ray Bradbury fan, opening with burning books and a quote from Fahrenheit 451 definitely got my attention! I would love for another novella exploring Faro’s early existence and how she was imprisoned.

I plan to read the other three speculative stories for CBR14. This was an interesting project that I was surprised to see Amazon produce. I try not to buy as many books from them, but I do love them supporting Black authors and speculative fiction. It’s free with Kindle unlimited and comes with Audible narration by some great Black narrators too. If you’re a fan of any of the contributing authors, Octavia Butler, or NK Jemisin, you should check out this collection.

The Visit By Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche

the visit chimamanda

What a powerful short story this is!! Coming from the acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, this story definitely continues her brilliant writing style. Like her previous works, the main setting of the story is Nigeria with glimpses beyond the horizon of the western world.

However what is most striking about this gem of a short story is its focus on feminism. It’s just not limited to putting a strong, independent and intelligent woman in the centre but also about imagining this world ruled by women. This is the world of women, for women and run by women with ample authority,

On the outset, it talks a visit of a childhood friend called Eze who is currently living in USA, to the home of his childhood friend Obinna. Obinna is a dutiful stay-at-home husband who is content with the regular pace of his family life and being around his growing children. He is a supportive husband of his ambitious wife who is climbing the corporate ladder and doesn’t want to burden herself with family responsibilities.

But then Eze arrives on a fateful day. He brings along with him the bitterness, heartaches and most of all his regressive views about the domineering matriarchal presence across the world. Although Obinna connects with him and opens his heart as well as home to his old friend, still he is quite cautious about this rebellious attitude which could jeopardise his regular life.

This short story is all about this visit but the penmanship of the author takes it above and beyond it. It pictures a dramatically different world and presents a fantasised dynamic situation. But most of all, it makes its readers to pause and think. In my opinion, this is its biggest strength. Would like to recommend as a quick and effective read.

Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, at the weekend, held a reading event of her new book Notes on Grief in Lagos, where she read excerpts from the book and steered a discussion on her period of grief.

In the wake of her father’s death, Adichie had documented her thoughts on grief, which resulted in a poetic, amazing page-turner, laced with the motif of meditation, remembrance, hope, familial obligation and loss.

Drawing on personal encounter with the effects of losing both parents in within months, she used the event to offer profound thoughts on reassessing loss and adjusting strained relationships with friends, family and loved ones.

“I felt a sense of community and I also felt heartened that people were talking about their own grief. I think that’s how we are as a country where we are often told to move on.

“So, you suffered grief and someone tells you ‘Ok, Sorry, but move on. It has happened. But you are still in pain. I think it was just nice to be in the space where people are talking about it,” she said.

She expressed the hope that the book would help people to make sense of one of life’s greatest inevitabilities.

“I would rather not be talking about grief, because I would rather have my parents here. But it has happened. I think there is a part of me that is always thinking about how to reach out to people and I think partly, because I am a storyteller.

“I am kind of looking for ways in which our human stories connect, which is why I wanted to publish this book. I really hoped it will help one person dealing with grief,” she added.

Artists in all disciplines are invited to apply for Princeton Arts Fellowships and Hodder Fellowships – deadline September 10

The Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University is now accepting applications from artists in all artistic disciplines for two opportunities, the Princeton Arts Fellowship and the Hodder Fellowship . The Fellowships web page contains details and links to the online applications . Both applications are due by September 10, 2024.

About the Princeton Arts Fellowship

Princeton Arts Fellowships are awarded to artists whose achievements have been recognized as demonstrating extraordinary promise in any area of artistic practice and teaching. Applicants should be early career visual artists, filmmakers, composers, conductors, musicians, choreographers, poets, novelists, playwrights, designers, directors and performance artists—this list is not meant to be exhaustive—who would find it beneficial to spend time teaching and working in an artistically vibrant university community. Fellows spend two consecutive academic years (September 1-July 1) at Princeton and formal teaching is expected. The normal work assignment will be to teach one course each semester subject to approval by the Dean of the Faculty, but fellows may be asked to take on an artistic assignment in lieu of a class, such as directing a play or creating a dance with students. Although the teaching load is light, the expectation is that Fellows will be full and active members of the Princeton community, committed to frequent and engaged interactions with students during the academic year.

A $92,000 a year stipend is provided for each of the two years. As academic appointees, fellows are eligible for benefits during the two fellowship years. Fellows also have access to research funds.

One need not be a U.S. citizen to apply. Applicants can only apply for the Princeton Arts Fellowship twice in a lifetime. Past recipients of the Hodder Fellowship and individuals who have had a sustained and continuous relationship with Princeton are not eligible to apply.

Holders of Ph.D. degrees from Princeton are not eligible to apply. Fellowships are not intended to fund work leading to an advanced degree.

Through the online portal, Princeton Arts Fellowship applicants should include a curriculum vitae; contact information for three references; work samples (i.e., a writing sample, images of work, video links to performances, etc.); and a 750-word proposal that includes how the applicant would hope to use the two years of the fellowship to develop their work, how they would contribute to Princeton’s arts community through teaching and/or production, and how they have encouraged diversity and inclusion and furthered accessibility in your artistic practice, teaching, and/or research.

Typically, two new Princeton Arts Fellows are selected each year.

Princeton Arts Fellowships are funded in part by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, David E. Kelley Society of Fellows in the Arts, and the Maurice R. Greenberg Scholarship Fund.

About the Hodder Fellowship

Open to artists demonstrating “much more than ordinary intellectual and literary gifts,” the Hodder Fellowship is awarded to artists more “for promise than for performance,” enabling them to pursue an independent project for one academic year. Potential Hodder Fellows are composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, writers, translators, or other kinds of artists or humanists. Given the strength of the applicant pool, most successful Fellows have published a first book or have similar achievements in their own fields; the Hodder is designed to provide Fellows with the “studious leisure” to undertake significant new work. No teaching is required.

A $92,000 stipend is provided for this 10-month appointment as a Visiting Fellow. Fellows are eligible for benefits during the length of the fellowship and have access to research funds.

One need not be a U.S. citizen to apply for the Hodder Fellowship and applicants may apply in each new application cycle. Previous recipients of the Princeton Arts Fellowship are not eligible to apply. Fellowships are not intended to fund work leading to an advanced degree.

Through the online portal, Hodder Fellowship applicants should include a curriculum vitae, a 500-word project proposal, and samples of work (i.e., writing sample, images of your work, video links to performances, etc.).

Typically, five Hodder Fellows are selected in each cycle.

The Mary Mackall Gwinn Hodder Fellowship program is funded by the Charles John Morris Gwinn and Alfred Hodder Memorial Fund.

The online application must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. (ET) on September 10, 2024; late applications will not be accepted.

History of the Fellowships

The Hodder Fellowship dates back to the 1940s and was historically awarded only to literary artists. Earlier recipients include the poet John Berryman (1950) and the critic R.P. Blackmur (1944), as well as novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2005) and Anthony Doerr (2003), whose novel All the Light We Cannot See won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Today, the Hodder is open to artists in all disciplines, and recent fellows have included playwrights, choreographers, filmmakers, and visual artists as well as writers, such as Natalie Diaz, Mark Thomas Gibson, Jamil Kochai, Mario Moore, Jiehae Park, Martyna Majok, Okwui Okpokwasili, Will Rawls, and Leslie Cuyjet.

The Princeton Arts Fellowship was launched in 2013. Among the 26 fellows to date are Raja Feather Kelly, jaamil olawale kosoko, yuniya edi kwon, Michael J. Love, Tiona Nekkia McClodden, Christopher “Unpezverde” Núñez, Erika L. Sánchez, Danez Smith, Kamara Thomas, and Maysoon Zayid.
