Tour de France 2022 LIVE result: Tadej Pogacar wins dramatic stage 7 atop La Planche des Belles Filles

Stage 7 of the 2022 Tour de France brings a familiar sight over recent years as Tadej Pogacar assumes the yellow jersey once more. The Slovenian produced a typically unstoppable assault on stage 6 to win in Longwy and jump to the top of the general classification, and barely a week into the race he already looks on course to win an historic third successive maillot jaune .

If Pogacar is feeling fresh then he could turn the screw again today on what is the first mountain stage of the Tour, finishing atop the now iconic La Planche des Belles Filles where Chris Froome won in 2012 and where Pogacar himself took control of the 2020 race. Key rivals like Geraint Thomas (Ineos) and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) will hope Pogacar is still feeling the effects of his exertions yesterday as try to challenge his control.

‘The Plank’ gets steeper as it rises towards the finish line, ending on a 24% gradient which will sort the hardy climbers from the rest. It comes after two category three climbs: the Col de Grosse Pierre (3.1km at 6.4%) and Col des Croix (3.2km at 6.3%) and the stage winner will require sharp bike-handling on the descents as well as strong legs on the way up.

Follow all the latest from stage 7 of the Tour de France below.

An interesting point made by Bradley Wiggins on Eurosport – back a few generations, the yellow jersey would have allowed a rival to take the victory there as an act of courtesy. That doesn’t happen anymore, especially with the bonus seconds available for finishing first. Pogacar was never going to be satisfied with second place.

16:28 , Lawrence Ostlere

Have a watch of that finale. My heart goes out to Lennard Kamna who made a brilliant bid for glory and fell agonisingly short – about 20 or 30 metres of a 177km race.

That final was 🔥🔥🔥 What a show from the favourites on La Super Planche des Belles Filles. What a photo this is:

16:19 , Lawrence Ostlere

What a fantastic race that was. They crawled over the line, but Pogacar just had that tiny bit more left in his legs to take victory from his fiercest rival Vingegaard. That was a huge win not necessarily for the GC standings, but pyschologically, to assert his authority at the top of La Planche. Pogacar even had time to give Vingegaard a glance as he passed him, as if to say “can you respond?”, and a devastated Vingegaard just dropped his head as they reached the line.

Tadej Pogacar wins a thrilling stage 7!

16:13 , Lawrence Ostlere

Vingegaard overtakes Kamna, heartbreakingly, with just about 20 metres left, and Pogacar follows past. The Dane looks to be winning the stage but with just five metres remaining Pogacar hauls himself past his rival to take the victory! Wow, what a finish, and a brilliant win for the yellow jersey.

16:12 , Lawrence Ostlere

100m to go: Kamna is desperately trying to cling on. Now Vingegaard is coming for him! And Pogacar! What a battle for the line...

16:11 , Lawrence Ostlere

Pogacar can see Lennard Kamna up the road! He wants to steal the stage!

16:10 , Lawrence Ostlere

300km to go: Kamna is surely going to win the stage now, while back down the road Pogacar has not been able to shake the attentions of his rivals.

16:09 , Lawrence Ostlere

500m to go: Pogacar attacks! Can Thomas and Vingegaard cling on?

16:08 , Lawrence Ostlere

1km to go: Lennard Kamna has just 1000m to the finish line, though they are brutally steep and the asphalt is shifting to gravel track. He’s so close! The peloton are not getting much closer, still 40 seconds back, all content to follow each other up the road for now.

16:07 , Lawrence Ostlere

2km to go: Kamna is digging in and grinding hard as fans step into the road to roar him up La Planche. It looks like he’s going to hang on! The peloton is still 45 seconds back, where the key GC riders have not yet attacked one another. Pogacar, Thomas and Vingegaard all still there near the nose.

16:05 , Lawrence Ostlere

2.5km to go: The peloton is shrinking as more and more riders slide off the back as the road steepens and the pain intensifies. The strongest few are closing in on Kamna but I think they are running out of time to stop him from winning this stage 7 – the gap is still around 45 seconds.

16:03 , Lawrence Ostlere

3km to go: Kamna is going for his second Tour de France stage win and his third grand tour stage win, and this would surely be the best of the lot on the iconic Planche climb. Three of the biggest kilometres of the 25-year-old German rider’s life.

16:01 , Lawrence Ostlere

3.5km to go: Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) is grinding away at the front still around a minute clear of the GC riders, but this 3.5km is about as brutal as it gets on this Tour, with the steep 24% gradient finish on gravel terrain still to come.

16:00 , Lawrence Ostlere

4km to go : UAE Emirates take to the front of the peloton once more and there are three riders dragging Pogacar up the mountain – this is an impressive show of strength from a team often maligned for failing to help their leader. Geraint Thomas sits on Pogacar’s wheel with Jumbo-Visma in close contact too. They are now around a minute fromLennard Kamna, who has powered past Geschke and into the solo lead!

15:57 , Lawrence Ostlere

5km to go: Teuns and Kamna are trying desperately to make contact with stage leader Geschke in an effort to make it a three-way fight for the win. There is still a 1 min 15 sec gap back to the big GC favourites.

15:55 , Lawrence Ostlere

5.5km to go: Geschke looks absolutely bushed, naturally, driving solo up La Planche with his tongue out. Back in the peloton, Roglic, Pogacar, Vingegaard, Thomas, Quintana and Bardet are all near the front.

15:53 , Lawrence Ostlere

6km to go: Geschke is working hard to build a gap – this is a bold solo move. Has he gone too early? The peloton meanwhile is only around 1 min 15 sec down the road with all the main GC contenders well placed. No attacks there yet.

15:52 , Lawrence Ostlere

7km to go: Schachmann drops off the breakaway, as does Erviti, as the road steepens – only four left now at the front: Teuns, Kamna, Durbridge and Geschke, I believe. And Geschke attacks!

15:50 , Lawrence Ostlere

8km to go : Ineos are really pumping hard with Filippo Ganna driving a time-trial-esque speed off the front of the peloton and Geraint Thomas on his wheel. The gap to the break is down to around 1min 30sec.

15:46 , Lawrence Ostlere

10km to go: The breakaway riders are fighting to keep their advantage – they have worked hard all day and they want this stage win. The gap is around 1min 45sec to the peloton, where Ineos have now injected some pace.

15:44 , Lawrence Ostlere

One small descent, and then the final climb awaits.

⛰️LA SUPER PLANCHE DES BELLES FILLES⛰️ 7km 8.7% average gradient 24% max gradient inside the last gravel km Brace yourselves! #TDFdata #TDF2022 pic.twitter.com/mBJudz57Y5 — letourdata (@letourdata) July 8, 2022

15:42 , Lawrence Ostlere

15km to go: Some other teams are now contributing to help UAE Emirates reel in the breakaway, notably Jumbo-Visma, as Wout van Aert’s distinctive green jersey drifts forwards to take a turn on the nose.

15:35 , Lawrence Ostlere

18km to go: The break’s advantage is being eaten into by UAE Emirates leading the peloton, down now to within two minutes for the first time in a long while, and this all feels set up for Pogacar to do something special at the finish. Will Jonas Vingegaard be able to respond?

15:34 , Lawrence Ostlere

If the winner is to come from this breakaway, who might it be? Durbridge and Barthe have never won grand tour stages before, while the veteran Erviti is more of a punchy time triallist than a climber. Teuns won on La Planche in 2019 so he must be the favourite right now, while Bora riders Schachmann and Kamna both have climbing legs suited for this kind of summit finish.

15:22 , Lawrence Ostlere

The breakaway’s gap is pretty steady at 2min 45sec. A reminder of those seven breakers: Max Schachmann and Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe), Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious), Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange), Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels), Imanol Erviti (Movistar), Simon Geschke (Cofidis).

15:12 , Lawrence Ostlere

A reminder of what the riders face in the rest of this stage, having crested the Col des Croix.

15:10 , Lawrence Ostlere

38km to go : The breakaway are clear of the second categorised climb and they have now have one gentle ascent before a fast downhill stretch leading into the start of La Planche des Belles Filles.

15:03 , Lawrence Ostlere

42km to go: So, the state of play. A seven-man breakaway leads the stage with an advantage of around three minutes from the peloton. The break contains Max Schachmann and Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe), Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious), Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange), Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels), Imanol Erviti (Movistar) and Simon Geschke (Cofidis). Crucially, Schachmann is only two minutes or so down from the yellow jersey of Tadej Pogacar in the general classification, and that has spurred UAE Emirates to keep the pace high in the peloton to ensure they don’t lose yellow at the end of the day.

We are approaching the start of the second categorised climb of the day, the category three Col des Croix (3.2km at 6.3%).

14:55 , Lawrence Ostlere

Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels) and Imanol Erviti (Movistar) have fought back to join the leading five and make it a seven-man breakaway.

14:43 , Lawrence Ostlere

This is the quintet currently leading the stage by around two and a half minutes:

There are now 5 grouped together up front: Il ne reste que 5 coureurs à l'avant : 🇩🇪 @lennardkaemna 🇩🇪 @MaxSchachmann 🇩🇪 @simongeschke 🇧🇪 @dylan_teuns 🇦🇺 @luke_durbridge1 #TDF2022 pic.twitter.com/XHpWNthYYo — Tour de France™ (@LeTour) July 8, 2022

Overall standings (top 10 after 6 of 21 stages)

3. Jonas Vingegaard, Denmark, Jumbo-Visma, :31.

Stage-by-stage guide

14:35 , Lawrence Ostlere

A look ahead to the rest of the race, with the Alps and Pyrenees standing between the peloton and Paris.

Tour de France 2022 stage-by-stage guide

14:33 , Lawrence Ostlere

This leading trio have increased their gap to the peloton but UAE Emirates are working hard not to let things get too wide, with the time to the new breakaway at 2min 30sec.

And now three becomes five, as Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious) and Simon Geschke (Cofidis) work their way back to the front. What Schachmann, Kamna and Durbridge have successfully done is weed out the weak from the 10-man break.

14:27 , Lawrence Ostlere

70km to go: So Max Schachmann and Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange) are the three now leading the rac,e and their attack on this category three climb up the Col de Grosse Pierre (3.1km at 6.4%) has proved effective in exploding the original 10-man breakaway into pieces.

14:25 , Lawrence Ostlere

An attack at the front of the breakaway! It feels bold, this. Lennard Kamna leads the way with his Bora teammate Max Schachmann and, I think, Luke Durbridge of BikeExchange. Perhaps they got fed up of some in the break not pulling their weight. They might also have decided this is the only way to shake off the chasing peloton.

14:22 , Lawrence Ostlere

Mads Pedersen steps out to the front of the breakaway to collect the majority of the sprint points on offer.

Back in the peloton, Wout van Aert and Fabio Jakobsen shuffle to the nose and fight it out for 11th across the sprint line – but Jakobsen barely tries and Van Aert is able to cruise over. All very odd. Van Aert is already wearing green with a healthy points lead and he has increased it slightly there.

14:18 , Lawrence Ostlere

The breakaway’s advantage has stabilised at around two minutes from the UAE Emirates-led peloton. The intermediate sprint coming up, which isn’t going to be heavily contested by these breakawayers...

14:05 , Lawrence Ostlere

Here’s Tadej Pogacar, decked out in yellow, speaking earlier today: “It feels great to be in yellow, especially today on La Planche des Belles Filles. We all know it's a brutal climb in the end, so today things will be more settled [compared to the chaos of stage 6].”

14:01 , Lawrence Ostlere

85km to go: UAE Emirates are keeping the pace high in the peloton and the gap to the breakaway is less than two minutes.

UAE’s Stake Laengen has dropped off the breakaway to rejoin his team, and I missed one man – Simon Geschke – from the list, so here’s the 10 now out front:

Max Schachmann and Lennard Kamna (Boha-Hansgrohe), Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious), Mads Pedersen and Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange), Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels), Kasper Asgreen (QuickStep), Imanol Erviti (Movistar), Simon Geschke (Cofidis).

13:51 , Lawrence Ostlere

Meanwhile...

Best moment of the entire #TDF2022 stage (at least until we’ll reach the steep gradients of the last climb) 😁 pic.twitter.com/NdNjdpTvWh — Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team (@qst_alphavinyl) July 8, 2022

13:49 , Lawrence Ostlere

UAE Emirates are working very hard to keep the gap tight to the breakaway, which has not been allowed to grow more than a couple of minutes.

13:38 , Lawrence Ostlere

A few thoughts on this breakaway. First of all, Max Schachmann is the highest of the breakers in the general classification, he is 23rd only 2min 07sec behind the yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar, so Pogacar’s UAE Emirates team will be wary of letting this group build up a huge gapthat might threaten his overall lead. That limits the scope of the breakaway and could even set up Pogacar for the stage win later in the day.

Bora-Hansgrohe certainly are in a good position here though, not only threatening the yellow jersey but with two strong climbers who could feasibly win the stage. Elsewhere Dylan Teuns has won on La Planche des Belles Filles before at the Tour, in 2019, when another breaker Giulio Ciccone was in the yellow jersey, so they will have fond memories of today’s final climb. Ciccone, like Schachmann, has a teammate alongside him in this break in Mads Pedersen, who can help him keep the pace high before the final climb.

It is also worth noting that UAE Emirates have their own man in there, in Vegard Stake Laengen, who will do very little work whatsoever on the front I suspect, and will attempt to slow the break to help Pogacar.

13:29 , Lawrence Ostlere

The breakaway has formed! Finally. Tadej Pogacar comes to the front of the peloton and indicates he wants a comfort break, and with that the main pack accepts that the break can go clear. I believe there are 10 riders in the break:

Max Schachmann and Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe), Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious), Mads Pedersen and Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange), Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels), Kasper Asgreen (QuickStep), Imanol Erviti (Movistar), Vegard Stake Laengen (UAE Emirates).

13:23 , Lawrence Ostlere

115km to go: A group of chasers are working hard to get away from the peloton and join Ganna and Geschke at the front. The main bunch look happy to enough to let these dozen-ish riders go off up the road.

13:09 , Lawrence Ostlere

125km to go: Filippo Ganna and Simon Geschke are making a little bit of progress, now 20 seconds clear of the bunch.

Ganna is Ineos’s Italian time-trial speciallist who you wouldn’t necessarily tip to win a stage like this one, given the gruelling summit finish to come. But if a bigger breakaway joins him and makes serious headway then Ineos will be happy to have someone up front from a tactical point of view.

Geschke is a more likely stage contender, given his one Tour de France stage victory came on a mountain day, though that was back in 2015 and the 36-year-old has not shown that sort of form for some time.

13:02 , Lawrence Ostlere

A two-man breakaway is fighting hard to stay clear of the peloton: Filippo Ganna joins Simon Geschke riding into a headwind a few seconds in front of the main pack.

12:51 , Lawrence Ostlere

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) has switched from yellow to the green jersey today, Magnus Cort (EF Education) stays in the polka dots, while Britain's very own Tom Pidcock (Ineos) wears the leading young rider's white jersey.

12:48 , Lawrence Ostlere

Pogacar’s day didn’t get off to the best start, suffering a couple of mechanicals before the stage officially got under way. The pack had to slow down, twice, to let him rejoin. Hopefully the reigning champion’s afternoon improves from there.

12:36 , Lawrence Ostlere

A reminder of that stunning win yesterday by Tadej Pogacar, who has taken a firm grip on this race with barely a week gone and his favourite Alpine mountains not yet in sight:

Tadej Pogacar takes yellow jersey after peloton denies Wout Van Aert victory

12:32 , Lawrence Ostlere

160km to go : No breakaway as yet, despite a few efforts, but one is bound to stick sooner or later and when it does it may well make it all the way home.

12:23 , Lawrence Ostlere

And here is today’s race profile. The Col de Grosse Pierre (3.1km at 6.4%) and Col des Croix (3.2km at 6.3%) precede the final climb, which steepens to that brutal finishing stretch when the road turns into a gravel track.

12:21 , Lawrence Ostlere

Here’s a look at today’s stage map, as the riders travel south towards the Vosges Mountains where La Super Planche des Belles Filles awaits.

12:16 , Lawrence Ostlere

And we’re off! Stage 7 is under way. Glorious sunshine in Tomblaine, an area on the eastern side of Nancy, as a few riders attempt to escape quickly up the road to no avail.

Jumbo-Visma could ally with Ineos to bring down Pogacar

12:13 , Lawrence Ostlere

Jumbo-Visma sporting director Frans Maassen spoke to Eurosport this morning on a range of topics, and hinted they could work with Ineos later in the Tour to unseat Pogacar from the yellow jersey.

On today’s stage: “We think the break will go to the finish, and then a battle between the big stars. We have to follow the big guy in yellow and we're going to try that. I hope [Jumbo leader Jonas Vingegaard can attack today ] but to be honest all the peloton suffered a lot yesterday. It suits him better today and I hope he has the legs to do something.”

On an anti-Pogacar alliance: “Too early to think about that. Maybe later on the Tour it can help to be an ally with Ineos, I don't know, we'll see.”

11:58 , Lawrence Ostlere

Tour de France, domani tappa 8: percorso, altimetria favoriti e orari tv

Incognita su Giulio Ciccone, già lontano in classifica.

ZLM Tour: Casper van Uden powers away from sprint field to win stage 2

Gerben Thijssen and Gleb Syritsa round out the podium in Wissenkerke after photo finish for second

Casper van Uden celebrates victory

Casper van Uden (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) won the opening road stage of the ZLM Tour in Wissenkerke, coming out on top in the mass bunch sprint finish to score his third win of the season.

The Dutchman beat Gleb Syritsa (Astana Qazaqstan) and Gerben Thijssen (Intermarché-Wanty) into second and third place with a clever move to go long at 200 metres to go.

Van Uden accelerated away from his rivals after hitting the front heading through a late kink in the road in the closing straight to take DSM’s 10th win of 2024.

Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Wanty) remains in the race lead following his stage 1 time trial win, with the Belgian retaining his 12-second lead over Tim van Dijke (Visma-Lease A Bike). With six bonus seconds for second place on stage 2, Syritsa moves level on time with Van Dijke in third place.

The second stage would be the second-longest of the five-day race, measuring in at 193.8km, though the pan-flat day posed few difficulties for the riders even if it was run from Middelburg to Wissenkerke, close to the winds of the North Sea.

The six-man break of the day stood little chance of staying away on what was always going to be a day for the sprinters, though Samuele Zoccarato (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè), Victor Vercouillie (Flanders Baloise), Bram Dissel (Beat), Jelte Krijnsen (Parkhotel Valkenburg), Max Croonen (VolkerWessels), and Guillaume Visser (Diftar) all got out into the move.

Having come together at the 65km to go mark, the group would earn a maximum advantage of four minutes, though the gap was never going to stay so large as the sprint squads went to work behind.

DSM were joined up front by Visma and Intermarché in making the pace behind the breakaway, which survived well into the final. Racing into the final 10km, the move continued to hold a 30-second lead, though they'd be brought back in time for the closing sprint.

There, it was DSM which set things up for Van Uden as the 22-year-old second-year pro was able to jump early and steal a march on his rivals, shooting to a clear victory some way ahead of the rest. Further back, Syritsa and Thijssen crossed the line neck-and-neck to round out the podium, with a photo finish separating the duo.

10 a Jasper Philipsen

9 a Mark Cavendish

8 a Biniam Girmay

8 a Luca Mozzato

5 a Dylan Groenewegen

5 a Mads Pedersen
