An in-depth discovery of Tokyo

For many travelers in Japan, Tokyo is a destination that should not be missed, and they are right!

Although it would be a shame to limit the visit to the Japanese capital, Tokyo is definitely a must-see in the archipelago.

tour guide tokyo

Tokyo is a humongous megalopolis and the biggest city in the world, with 37 million inhabitants, that will impress Japan’s first-timers.

As a matter of fact, Tokyo is such a large city that it is also a prefecture. And it does not even take into account the encompassing “Greater Tokyo” and its numerous neighboring suburbs. Discover Japan’s capital and its transportation network smoothly, in a way you may not have imagined!

A dedicated guide

The tour you booked is completely private. You will not share your guide with unknown people, for more comfort and privacy.

You guide is dedicated to you or your group (couple, friends, family, etc.) and will offer suggestions during the tour according to the time of the year, the weather and your pace.

Know Japan beyond clichés.

Discover cities under a new approach, closer to their reality; Explore places hidden to tourists, good and sometimes original picture spots; Save time thanks to the locals’ experience who know Japan like the back of their hand; Enjoy your visit without worrying about planning or how to get there.

Step out the usual stereotyped guided tour and explore narrow streets, hidden gems, find the good restaurants that only appear on Japanese maps... Visit a Japan that no Western travel guide can describe!

Touring in the most popular places of Tokyo or Kyoto with our guides is naturally also possible.

Our Certified Tour Guides in Tokyo

Our certified guides in Tokyo are friendly, bilingual experts who will help you discover the capital’s various aspects: contemporary architecture (Shinjuku, Marunouchi, etc.), youth-oriented and trendy neighborhoods (Shibuya, Harajuku, etc.), geek and otaku culture (Akihabara, Nakano, etc.), shopping and luxury (Odaiba, Omotesando, Ginza, etc.), serenity (Chiyoda, Setagaya, etc.)

About Tokyo

Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō) is the nation’s capital, the site of the 2020 Summer Olympics and the most populous city in the world – there’s no shortage of places to see and things to do in Tokyo. While that means you’ll inevitably have to leave some things off your itinerary, it also means that there’s something for everyone.

Tokyo’s center, the 23 wards, combine some of the world’s busiest areas with remnants of old Japan; not far from Shibuya is the holy Meiji Jingu , while the 634-meter tall Tokyo Skytree and the iconic Senso-ji in Asakusa are within walking distance of each other. Shinjuku and Roppongi are two vibrant nightlife spots, yet they’re a short train ride away from Ueno Zoo and the Tsukiji Fish Market .

Right in the middle of it all is the Imperial Palace , a popular jogging route. Beautiful nature in the Okutama area and the Izu and Ogasawara Islands will make you forget that you’re still in Tokyo.

All visitors to Japan must have a passport valid for the duration of their stay . At the time of writing, citizens of most Western countries can stay in Japan for up to ninety days without a visa, provided they are visiting for tourism or business purposes and possess a valid ticket out of Japan. Citizens of certain other countries must apply for a visa in advance in their own country. Visas are usually free, though in certain circumstances you may be charged a fee.

The rules on visas do change from time to time, so check first with the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate, or on the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website .

Visa extension

For travellers from the UK and Ireland, among others, your stay can be extended for another three months.

  • To get a visa extension you’ll need to fill in two copies of an “Application for Extension of Stay”, available from the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau at 5-5-30 Kōnan, Minato-ku (Mon–Fri 9am– noon & 1–4pm; T03 5796 7111). Go early in the day, since the process takes forever; note that your application may not be confirmed for two weeks . Bring along passport photos (and your passport, of course), a letter explaining your reasons for wanting to extend your stay, and the requisite fee. In addition, you may be asked to show proof of sufficient funds to support your stay and a valid onward ticket out of the country.
  • An easier option – and the only alternative available to nationals of those countries who are not eligible for an extension – may be a short trip out of Japan to a neighbouring country and back, though you may still have to run the gauntlet of immigration officials on your return.

Working holiday visa, volunteer visa and their specifics

Citizens of the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, among other countries, can apply for a working holiday visa if they are aged between 18 and 30 (officially up to 25 for Canadians and Australians, though there are often ways around this if you’re under 30); this grants a stay of up to one year and entitles the holder to take paid employment so long as your stay is “primarily deemed to be a holiday”.

British nationals are also eligible for the volunteer visa scheme, which allows holders to undertake voluntary work for charitable organizations in Japan for up to one year. Your application must include a letter from the host organization confirming details of the voluntary work to be undertaken and the treatment the volunteer will receive (pocket money and board and lodging are allowed, but formal remuneration is not). You must also be able to show evidence of sufficient funds for your stay in Japan. Contact your local embassy or consulate to check the current details of the scheme.

Resident status

Foreigners legally allowed to stay in Japan for more than ninety days – basically, those with legal employment or married to a Japanese citizen – must obtain residency status before their first ninety days are up. Resident cards can be issued, with prior arrangement, at the main international airports, though most people end up applying at their local government office.

The resident cards (Zairyū kādo; 在留カード) include your photograph and must (legally speaking) be carried at all times, though in reality they’re rarely checked. In addition, if you’re on any sort of working visa and you leave Japan temporarily, you must get a re-entry visa before you leave if you wish to continue working on your return. Re-entry visas are available from local immigration bureaus.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo, Japan

To find an English-speaking doctor and the hospital or clinic best suited to your needs, contact the Tokyo Medical Information Service (Mon–Fri 9am–8pm; T03 5285 8181); they can also provide emergency medical translation services over the phone. Major hotels usually stock a limited array of common medicines.

Note that certain medications that are commonplace outside Japan are actually illegal here – some of the more prominent prescription drugs on the no-no list are codeine (beyond a certain amount) and some ADHD medications. The health ministry website has more specific details on these, and the forms you’ll need to fill in if you’re to bring these meds into Japan legally

Due to the high cost of hospital treatment in Japan, it’s essential to take out a good travel insurance policy , particularly one with comprehensive medical coverage.

The Japanese currency is the yen (en in Japanese). Notes are available in denominations of ¥1000, ¥2000 (rarely seen), ¥5000 and ¥10,000, while coins come in values of ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50, ¥100 and ¥500. Apart from the ¥5 piece, a copper-coloured coin with a hole in the centre, all other notes and coins indicate their value in Western numerals.

Though credit and debit cards are far more widely accepted than they were a few years ago, Japan is mostly a cash society. The major overseas cards are now accepted in all convenience stores, and the majority of places in which you’re likely to eat, drink or shop. However, some retailers only accept locally issued cards, and many will only take cash. Conversely, others will accept Google or Apple Pay on your phone (local apps are more widespread, but require a domestic number to function). and at many shops, it’s possible to pay for goods with your Pasmo card .

  • Although they don’t save you any money, the most convenient way to travel is to use a Pasmo or JR Suica stored-value card. Both can be used on all subways, many buses and both JR and private trains in the wider Tokyo area. The card can be recharged at ticket machines and ticket offices. Cards are available from ticket machines in metro and JR stations, for a minimum pre-loaded fee plus a deposit, which will both be returned to you when you cash in the card before leaving Tokyo – note that this can be done at Haneda airport, but not Narita.

Despite its reputation as an outrageously expensive city, with a little planning, Tokyo is a manageable destination even for those on a fairly modest budget. The key is to do what the majority of Japanese do: eat in simple restaurants, avoid the ritzier bars (or bars entirely; convenience-store alcohol is very cheap) and take advantage of any available discounts.

Bear in mind that many of the best things to do in Tokyo are absolutely free. Some of the top places in town – in a very literal sense – won’t set you back a single yen. The most popular are:

  • the observatories at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
  • Ebisu Garden Place (home to Longrain)

The majority of temples and shrines are free, as are many museums and galleries – and a whole bunch more become so if you invest in a Grutto Pass . Lastly, there are free walking tours around Asakusa, Ueno and the Imperial City area.

Holders of the International Student Identity Card (ISIC; isic.org ) are eligible for discounts on some transport and admission fees, as are children.

Tokyo boasts one of the lowest crime rates in the world. On the whole, the Japanese are honest and law-abiding; there’s little theft, and drug-related crimes are relatively rare. Nonetheless, it always pays to be careful in crowds, and to keep money and important documents stowed in an inside pocket or money belt, or in your hotel safe.

The presence of police boxes ( kōban ) in every neighbourhood helps to discourage petty crime, and the local police seem to spend the majority of their time dealing with stolen bikes and helping bemused visitors – Japanese and foreigners – find addresses. In theory, you should carry your passport or ID at all times; the police have the right to arrest anyone who fails to do so. In practice they rarely stop foreigners, but if you’re found without ID, you may well be escorted back to your hotel or apartment to collect it.

Anyone found with drugs will be treated less leniently ; if you’re lucky, you’ll simply be fined and deported, rather than sent to prison.

  • Tokyo Metropolitan Police run an English-language hotline (T 03 3503 8484 ; Mon–Fri 8.30am– 5.15pm).
  • Another useful option is Tokyo English Language Lifeline (T 03 5774 0992 , telljp.com ; daily 9am–11pm).
  • Emergency numbers: Police T 110 / Fire or ambulance T 119

Many visitors soon realize that Japan doesn’t quite live up to its tech-savvy reputation. A fair few local websites (including those of some expensive hotels and restaurants) are laughably bad; with italicized Times New Roman fonts and copious Clipart characters, many seem to have been imported directly from the mid-1990s. However, a whole bunch of businesses finally hauled their sites into the modern day during the Covid crisis in an effort to compete.

Wi-fi access has also become widespread, at last. Most big-city cafés offer it for free (some restaurants too), it’s par for the course at hostels and hotels, and available on many trains and Shinkansen. Many parts of the city also have some form of free access, typically courtesy of the local district government. Access is also enabled by portable hubs available to rent and travel around with.

Most foreign models of mobile phones will work in Japan – contact your mobile phone service provider before leaving your home country to make sure, and also to check the rates and charges for using data and making calls when travelling. It’s also possible to buy Japanese pay-as-you-go SIM cards from the major service providers (or nationwide electronics chains such as Yodobashi Camera and BIC Camera ), and of course these days it’s also easy to obtain an eSIM .

It is also possible to rent a wi-fi hub for internet access while you are in Japan. These can be pre-ordered and collected from airports, as well as being rented at places around the city too.

Decent free maps of the city are available from any of the tourist information centres. Bilingual maps on public notice boards outside the main exits to most subway and train stations are handy for getting your immediate bearings – these are usually oriented the way you are facing, so if you’re facing southeast, for example, the top of the map will be southeast and the bottom northwest.

There are also decent maps online. Google’s is typically excellent, while with a little hunting you’ll be able to find apps offering offline-friendly maps of the city. Perhaps equally useful are maps portraying the Tokyo subway network, since such maps are not always visible once you’re on the trains themselves.

Complete Guide to the Tōkaidō Shinkansen

If you’re traveling between Tokyo and Osaka , or Tokyo and Kyoto , then the Tōkaidō Shinkansen is easily the most convenient option. Here’s everything you need to know about Japan’s busiest bullet-train line.

Launched in 1964, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen was the world’s first high-speed rail line. Today, it is operated by JR Central and is the busiest Shinkansen route in Japan — ferrying tourists and locals alike between two of Japan’s most populated — and popular — cities. After stopping in Kyoto and Osaka , the Tōkaidō Shinkansen trains often continue along the Sanyō Shinkansen route to Kyūshū .

tokyo castles

Highlights along the Tōkaidō Shinkansen route

There are some great things to see and do along the Tōkaidō Shinkansen — it is the most popular Shinkansen route, after all. Here are our top recommendations:

  • 1. Explore the castle town of Odawara .
  • 2. Relax on the beach, or in an onsen, in Atami .
  • 3. Stop in Nagoya and visit Ghibli Park .
  • 4. Admire the ancient capital of Kyoto .
  • 5. Eat your fill in Osaka , a.k.a. Japan’s kitchen .

Pro tip: On a clear day, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen gives you a lovely view of Mt. Fuji . Reserve E seats for the window seat and best view — this goes for travel in either direction.

Services on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen

The Tōkaidō Shinkansen has three different types of train that run along the route. All three lines start in Tokyo and finish at Shin-Osaka Station, but they are different in terms of speed and stopping patterns.

Keep in mind that services on these trains may continue past Shin-Osaka as part of the Sanyō Shinkansen route. See below for more details.

The Nozomi is the fastest service on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, reaching speeds of up to 300 km per hour. It only stops at major stations between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, and makes the full journey in just 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Nozomi trains have both reserved and non-reserved seating, except during holiday periods in Japan like Golden Week and New Year, when the whole train is reserved-seating only.

There are usually three green cars — which is like business class — on Nozomi trains. Some Nozomi services continue past Shin-Osaka on the Sanyō Shinkansen route, going down to Hakata Station in Fukuoka .

Note: Although the Nozomi is the fastest way to get from Tokyo to Osaka, it is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass . You will need to pay a surcharge to use it.

Hikari trains are the next fastest trains on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen route. They can travel up to 285 km per hour, and take about 3 hours to get from Tokyo to Osaka. Hikari trains have five carriages with unreserved seating, and three green cars. Some Hikari trains also continue past Shin-Osaka Station to Hakata Station on the Sanyō Shinkansen route.

The Kodama is the slowest service on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen. It stops at every station between Osaka and Tokyo, and takes about 4 hours. Kodama trains have a mix of reserved and non-reserved seats, and three green cars.

Buying Tōkaidō Shinkansen tickets and making seat reservations

You can buy Tōkaidō Shinkansen tickets either in person or online . To buy tickets in person, you need to visit a JR train station and use the ticket machines, or visit a ticket office. If you’d rather buy a ticket online, you have a few more options, including Klook and Rakuten Travel Experiences .

Some JR Passes cover the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, but only for the Hikari and Kodama services. If you’d like to use your JR Pass to ride the fastest Nozomi service, you’ll have to buy a special complimentary ticket. This will cost an extra ¥ 4,180 to ¥ 4,960 one way, depending on your destination.

More information on buying Shinkansen tickets and making seat reservations can be found in our Ultimate Shinkansen Guide .

Luggage restrictions on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen

If you plan to take large luggage on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, you need to be aware of the size restrictions. You need to reserve specific seats if your suitcases has total dimensions of 161 cm to 250cm. Alternatively, you can reserve space in the baggage compartment — provided your suitcase fits into 80 x 60 x 50 cm for the upper space, or 80 x 60 x 40 cm for the lower space.

For more information on luggage storage on the Shinkansen, you can read our full bullet-train luggage rules guide .

Rail passes and other discounts on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen

You can save money by purchasing a rail pass, for unlimited rides, or seeking out discounts and promotions on single-use tickets.

What rail passes are good for the Tōkaidō Shinkansen?

While we love our regional rail passes , none of them cover the Tōkaidō Shinkansen. The All Japan Rail Pass is the only rail pass that covers it. And even then, it only covers the Hikari and Kodama services — if you want to ride the Nozomi, you’ll need to splash out extra for complimentary tickets.

Another downside to the fact that the All Japan Rail Pass is the only pass valid for the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, is that it’s not available to foreign residents of Japan.

Discounts and promotions

Here are a few other ways to get discounts on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen:

  • Eki-net : If you register for the Japanese version of JR’s online ticket service, called “Eki-net”, you may be able to snag tokudane tickets. These tickets have discounts ranging from 5% to 50% off, but dates and numbers are limited. Even if you can’t get tokudane tickets, booking an e-ticket or a round trip will get you a small discount. The only thing with Eki-net is that it can be tricky to use, even for Japanese speakers!
  • Student discounts: Students (from junior high school to university level) can get 20% off Shinkansen tickets for journeys over 101 km. You need to get a student passenger fare discount certificate (学生・生徒旅客運賃割引証 or gakusei seito ryokaku unchin waribikishō ) from your school and take it to a JR ticket office to buy your tickets.

For more ideas, check out our guide on how to ride the Shinkansen for less .

Shinkansen and hotel packages

A few different websites offer discount packages that include Shinkansen tickets and accommodation. However, the value of the packages varies a lot, and often the websites are only available in Japanese.

Here are a few to check out:

  • Nippon Travel Agency
  • JTB Packages

Where does the Tōkaidō Shinkansen go?

The Tōkaidō Shinkansen runs between Tokyo Station in eastern Japan and Shin-Osaka Station (Osaka City) in western Japan . Some Tōkaidō Shinkansen trains continue past Osaka to Hakata Station (Fukuoka City) and become part of the Sanyō Shinkansen.

route map of the Tokaido Shinkansen

Major stations at a glance

Prices were correct as of January, 2024, and are based on regular season travel. Children aged 6 to 11 ride for half price.

Stations of interest on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen

Odawara station.

Odawara Station is in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture . The city is known as the gateway to Hakone , as well as Odawara Castle. It’s also a great place to get some fresh seafood and enjoy the ocean views.

From Odawara Station, you can catch a number of different local train lines, including the JR Tōkaidō Main Line and Shōnan-Shinjuku Line. You can also transfer to the Odakyu Line or Hakone Tozan Line.

Where can I go near Odawara Station?

From Odawara Station, it’s just a five-minute walk to Odawara Castle . You could also visit the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Natural History, which has an impressive collection of fossils and insects, or Children’s Forest Wanpaku Land with its gardens and play areas, both of which are just 15 minutes away by bus.

Atami Station

Atami Station is in Atami City , Shizuoka Prefecture. Atami is a popular summer getaway from Tokyo, at least partially thanks to its beaches and onsen (hot springs), and also its convenient Shinkansen connection to Tokyo.

tour guide tokyo

Besides the Shinkansen, Atami Station also services local JR lines — the Tōkaidō Main Line and the Itō Line.

Where can I go near Atami Station?

From Atami Station, it’s a 10-minute bus ride or 15-minute walk to Atami Sun Beach . You can also visit the MOA Museum of Art ; it’s a bit further away — 35 minutes by bus — but its impressive collection and stunning sea views are well worth it.

Nagoya Station

tour guide tokyo

Nagoya Station is the main train station in Nagoya City , the capital city of Aichi Prefecture. Nagoya is mostly known for being an economic center with a strong manufacturing industry, but it’s slowly becoming more popular with tourists thanks to Ghibli Park , which opened in 2022.

From Nagoya Station , you can catch a variety of local JR and private train lines. These include the Tōkaidō Main Line, the Chūō Main Line, and the Kansai Main Line, as well as the Aonami Line, which can all take you to other nearby cities. Plus, there’s also the Higashiyama Line and Sakura-dōri Line subway lines. Finally, while technically their own stations, Meitetsu Nagoya Station and Kintetsu Nagoya Station are joined to Nagoya Station, and you can easily transfer between them.

Where can I go near Nagoya Station?

The area around Nagoya Station is mostly business orientated, but you can take a 10-minute walk to Noritake Garden . Otherwise, you can catch local sightseeing buses — called the Me-guru Bus — to various attractions around the city, including Nagoya Castle and Ōsu Shopping District .

And while not necessarily nearby, most tourists will pass through Nagoya Station on the way to Ghibli Park . To get to Ghibli Park from Nagoya Station, you can take either a train for about one hour, or a direct bus service for 40 minutes (but departures for this are infrequent). You could even take a taxi, but that also takes about an hour and is much more expensive!

Kyoto Station

Kyoto Station is the main train station in Kyoto — Japan’s ancient capital and a very popular tourist destination. It’s full of temples, shrines, and traditional charm — and tourists, obviously.

kyoto weekend

Kyoto Station has connections to lots of local train lines and bus routes. There are a few different JR West and Kintetsu Railway lines that will get you to less-crowded places like Lake Biwa and Nara , while the Karasuma Line subway travels north-south through Kyoto City.

Pro tip: Check out our full guides on getting around Kyoto and Kyoto discount travel passes to make your trip as smooth as possible.

Where can I go near Kyoto Station?

Kyoto Tower is within walking distance of Kyoto Station’s north exit. Otherwise, Kyoto’s attractions are quite spread out, so if you’d like to see some of the city’s famous temples or shrines you’ll need to hop on a train or bus. For example, Kiyomizudera Temple and Kinkaku-ji Temple are both about 30 minutes from the station, but require a few transfers.

Shin-Osaka Station

Shin-Osaka Station is the Shinkansen station in Osaka City — the third biggest city in Japan, especially well-known for its food .

The most important thing to know about Shin-Osaka Station is that it’s not the main train station in Osaka. That’s Osaka Station, which is about five minutes away by train. However, Shin-Osaka Station still has good connections. For example, you can take the Haruka Limited Express from here to Kyoto, or in the other direction to Kansai International Airport . There’s also the Thunderbird Limited Express, which can get you to Fukui and Kanazawa , as well as numerous other Limited Express and local train lines.

Where can I go near Shin-Osaka Station?

Dotonbori, Osaka

To be perfectly honest, there isn’t much near Shin-Osaka Station. It’s mainly a transit point to Osaka or other cities. If you head into Osaka itself, it only takes five minutes to get to Osaka Station — from there, it’s quick and easy to get to popular attractions like Osaka Castle and the Dōtonbori entertainment district .

Tōkaidō Shinkansen FAQs

Can you use the jr pass on the tōkaidō shinkansen.

The only JR Pass that you can use on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen is the All Japan Rail Pass . Just keep in mind that the All Japan Rail Pass doesn’t cover travel on Nozomi service trains, you’ll need to buy a separate, supplementary ticket for that.

What trains run on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen?

The Tōkaidō Shinkansen uses both N700A series 16-carriage trains, and N700S series 16-carriage trains.

Is there a cart service on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen?

Cart services on this Shinkansen route ended in 2023 . This was because of both staff shortages and declining sales. We are still sad about it, because Shinkansen coffee is the kind of bad-good coffee that adds meaning to life.

How fast does the Tōkaidō Shinkansen travel?

The fastest train on this route is the Nozomi service, which reaches speeds of up to 300 km per hour.

When did the Tōkaidō Shinkansen start running?

It was launched in 1964.

Are any extensions planned?

No, there are no extensions planned.

Explore Tokyo's cherry blossom charm with this travel guide

Explore Tokyo's cherry blossom charm with this travel guide

As cherry blossoms unfurl, Tokyo undergoes a stunning transformation. The city is enveloped in a soft pink hue as delicate petals bloom. This ephemeral beauty reaches its zenith from late March to early April, drawing global visitors. They come to behold the sakura 's full splendor, an enchanting display that captures the essence of life's fleeting perfection.

Best viewing spots revealed

For the finest cherry blossom experience, make your way to Ueno Park. There, over a thousand trees form an impressive canopy of blooms. If you prefer a more tranquil setting, Shinjuku Gyoen is ideal, or choose Chidorigafuchi for a unique boat ride surrounded by petals. For optimal viewing and fewer crowds, it's best to visit early in the day or during weekdays.

Pack smart for sakura season

A light jacket is essential as spring weather can be fickle. Wear comfortable shoes for extended strolls through the parks. Your camera, with spare batteries, is crucial to capture the sakura's fleeting beauty. Include a picnic mat in your essentials for lounging, and carry cash for the various food stalls that pop up near prime blossom-viewing areas.

Embrace hanami traditions

Hanami transcends mere flower viewing; it's a cherished occasion to savor nature's transient beauty with loved ones. Embrace this tradition by packing a bento box and snacks, and partake in a leisurely picnic beneath the cherry blossoms. Remember to honor the shared spaces: dispose of your waste properly and maintain low noise levels to ensure everyone can enjoy the serene hanami ambiance.

Navigate Tokyo with ease

In Tokyo, public transport is reliable but often crowded during the cherry blossom season. To streamline your travel, use a prepaid Suica or Pasmo card, which saves time on ticket purchases. For those adept at cycling, consider renting a bike. It allows for flexible travel and the opportunity to find hidden cherry blossom gems that are off the beaten tourist track.

Kanagawa Tour Guide - Kaneo U.

I’m so excited to have a chance to show you around my favorite spots in Kanagawa prefecture. I was born in Kanagawa. I spent my whole school life, including university, here in Kanagawa. I worked as a high school English teacher here for 40 years. I love Kanagawa so much. We have many interesting tourist spots, like Hakone, Kamakura, Enoshima and Yokohama. I got my tour guide license in English in 2009. I am still an English teacher. To give an interesting and impressive lesson to young high school students, I’ve learnt and gathered many kinds of information. I also have a license to teach social studies, so I have a wide range of knowledge about Japanese culture and history. I’m sure to provide you an interesting tour.

Tokyo Tour Guide - Grant A.

My name is Grant I lived more than 10 years in Japan. I graduated University and translation school in Tokyo. I am fluent in Japanese. I have a degree in Asian studies and have expert-level knowledge of Japanese culture and history. I have memorized the JR rail system across all of Japan, I use the same train timetable calculators as the station staff, and I have experience using bullet train passes that are exclusive to foreign visitors. I can optimally navigate the Tokyo underground and maximize value from a Tokyo metro pass and also understand Tokyo above ground which will allow for seamless transitions between different metro stations and landmarks with minimal backtracking. My tour fee is 20,000yen for 1-6hours (135.28USD) 30,000yen for 7-9hours (202.93USD) 40,000yen for 9-12hours (270.57USD) I have half-day tours listed at 20,000 yen (135.28USD) at the moment but you can combine them or do a custom tour for roughly up to 9 hours for 30,000 yen (202.93USD). The time transiting to and from your hotel for pick up or drop off within Tokyo 23wards does not count towards an increase in the price.

Yokohama Tour Guide - Haruo T.

I live in Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture. I have a license to teach in high schools and was admitted to the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language in the University of Birmingham. Until 2015 I had been teaching English at public high schools in Kanagawa for 37 years. During that time, I had some experience of guiding students from overseas through sister-school relationship around Tokyo and Kanagawa. Therefore, I had good command of English with the TOEIC score of 935. As for a tour guide experience I earned the certificate of National Government Licensed Guide-Interpreter in English and since then I have guided tourists to the popular sites around Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura and Yokosuka. My guiding focuses on introducing not only Japanese historical and cultural backgrounds but also giving tourists some tips to travel Japan only by themselves, such as how to use trains and subways, find good restaurants, reserve tickets, buy survenier, and speak basic Japanese. In addition, my tour includes opportunities to experience Japanese culture like Zen meditation, ninja performance, visiting anime's location sites based on tourists' request. Besides, by means of my hobbies of writing English Haiku and Waka (traditional Japanese poems) and performing Rakugo (traditional Japanese funny story telling) in English, I can surely entertain tourists during the tour. My moto as a tour guide is let the tourists have a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Japan with my profound, intelligible and interestiog guiding.

Tokyo Tour Guide - Yoko Y.

Bonjour!

Tokyo Tour Guide - Takako T.

Hello! I am Takako Takata. I was born in Kyoto and grew up in other several districts in Japan where I was attracted by each place's feature. I started the tour guiding in 2009 in which I introduce interesting and unique spots to tourists. I love to share the marvelous time and moment with people through tours. In Japanese, we have a wonderful phrase expressing such moment and we call it "Ichigo Ichie". It means we have to treasure every encounter, a once-in- a-lifetime-encounter that is , as it may not recur again. This word came from the spirit of tea ceremony. Anyway, let us enjoy extraordinary tours in Tokyo together, shall we ?

Mt. Takao tour (great for kids)-

“ My Boys Loved the Tour! ”

Great time seeing the temples and nature of Mt. Takao. I really appreciated the gifts and games from Dan. My boys can be a bit of a handful and they don't like soba noodles so Dan suggested a burger place down the road. They loved it. All in a great experience. Thanks Dan!

“ Excellent experience in Tokyo with Tatako ”

We spent today with Tatako who took us on a walking tour of Tokyo. It was a great way to get a feel for the city and see some highlights. She met us at our hotel, as arranged, and was able to suggest an itinerary whilst still being flexible to our needs. She was knowledgeable about the city, happy to explain anything and answer our questions. It was great to have her help us buy bus and underground tickets. Tatako was lovely company and helped us to get the most out of our day. I’d highly recommend her to anyone looking to be shown around the city.

Philip B.

Thank you for joining me. Today I introduced several must-see places in Tokyo. It's my great pleasure to entertain the guests. I could enjoy there together with you. I reccomend to stroll around the hotel, Fukagawa Fudo teple, Tomioka shrine, Kiyosumi garden, Fukagawa Edo museum and so on. Have a good night! I would like to visit Plymouth someday. See you again.
