How to shop Sydney, with Nadia Fairfax

Iconic and daring fashion boutiques are scattered across Sydney’s inner suburbs. Here’s an insider’s guide to finding them.

Interviewed by Natasha Dragun

Sydney born-and-bred, influencer Nadia Fairfax chronicles the city’s fashion and style scene on her popular website, Fairfax Journal . From Paddington to Double Bay, here are her top picks of the Sydney suburbs you cannot miss on your next shopping itinerary.

Start your shopping mission in Double Bay

Harbour views from Murray Rose Pool in Double Bay © Destination NSW

Between shops, Nadia often makes the most of Double Bay’s high-end beauty salons, including Kristin Fisher Eyebrows .

“Sydney’s fashion scene is quite optimistic,” Nadia says. “It’s like ‘dopamine dressing’, in the sense that there are bright colours, and bold, clashing prints and textures. There are lots of voluminous pieces with intricate details and contrasting styles. It emulates the vibe of the city.” Think always busy, extremely diverse and all about the outdoors.

At the top of Nadia’s list of Sydney’s most stylish shopping precincts is Double Bay, an upscale harbourside neighbourhood in the inner east, just over a 10-minute drive east of the city centre. “The precinct is really finding its groove again, with so many beautiful stores from local and hard-to-find international designers,” she says. “I particularly love Mode Sportif – the owner, Deborah Symond O’Neil, has such an eye for striking event wear.” You’ll find pieces in her store from the likes of Bird & Knoll , Wynn Hamlyn and Beaufille .

Walk down Double Bay’s Bay Street and you’ll find boutiques by iconic Australian designers such as Carla Zampatti and local bespoke milliner Nerida Winter .

“The area is also home to a boutique from Australian brand Scanlan Theodore , known for clean lines and flattering cuts, as well as a store called The Monogram Mode , which sells the most stylish fashions for kids.”

Make Paddington your next stop

Venroy, Paddington, New South Wales © Venroy

Heading back towards the city, you’ll arrive in the very bohemian and chic inner-eastern suburb of Paddington, a ten-minute drive south-east from central Sydney. In this charming suburb, boutiques occupy fully-restored Victorian terraced houses and there is a real emphasis on local designers.

"Shopping in Paddington really allows you to embrace Sydney’s successful creative culture" Nadia Fairfax

Your first stop should be the cluster of stores at The Intersection of Oxford Street (the main street through Paddington), and Glenmore Road, which is dedicated to iconic and bourgeoning Australian fashion. “ Viktoria & Woods , started by Melbourne-based Margie Woods, has a showroom in this neighbourhood and others across Sydney, as does Venroy , which is really making a mark.” Venroy’s pieces, for example, are designed to capture Sydney’s leisure-oriented lifestyle.

Then there’s Aje on Oxford Street. “I often turn to this brand when I’m dressing up for events or an occasion. I worked with them as a brand manager for years, and I love their style ethos. There’s toughness, but femininity – it’s dishevelled elegance.

“I’m usually pretty specific when shopping, but visitors should really make a day of exploring Paddington with all it’s nooks and small one-off boutiques. Stop in to a pub for a drink, or a café – my favourite is Jackies Paddington for coffee.”

Buy local designers

“Sydney local high-end designers are creating some amazing things,” Nadia says. “ Christopher Esber’s ready-to-wear women’s fashions are really incredible. As are those at Sir the Label , which was started by two young Sydney girls and has clothing everyone can wear. I have so many of their pieces, from lovely linens to slinky things.”

You can shop Sir the Label’s designs at its flagship store in the beachside suburb of Manly , a gorgeous 30-minute ferry ride from the city’s glittering Circular Quay . And you can browse Christopher Esber’s creations at  Désordre boutique in Darlinghurst, just between Paddington and the city centre.

Looking for iconic Australian jewellery and homewares? Head to the modernist masters at Dinosaur Designs , with stores in the Strand Arcade in central Sydney and on Paddington’s Oxford Street. “I love Dinosaur Designs,” Nadia says. “Louise Olsen [a co-owner] keeps evolving, and I adore her use of bold colours. Her father is notable Australian artist John Olsen. They’re a pretty cool family. I have heaps of the brand’s bangles in a multitude of colours, plus gold earrings with their signature resin baubles that you can mix and match in colours. I also have their resin homewares all around the place.”

Browse the shops in Bondi

“Any first-timer to Sydney is going to visit  Bondi  [a 20-minute drive east of the city centre], and its boutiques are definitely worth a stroll,”

Nadia recommends the Playa by Lucy Folk concept store, with its oh-so-pink interiors showcasing beachy fashions, accessories and jewellery by Lucy Folk, a goldsmith by trade. Playa by Lucy Folk is on Hall Street, Bondi Beach – you’ll find the entrance around the corner in the side street.

Walk further down Hall Street away from the beachfront and you’ll find Bondi institution Gertrude & Alice , a popular bookstore and café. Here you can sip great coffee at tables set among packed bookshelves while you choose your next novel. And for Sydney’s favourite gelato, cross the road from Gertrude & Alice and order a refreshing scoop from Gelato Messina Bondi .

Hunt for treasure at Kirribilli Markets

Kirribilli Markets, Sydney, New South Wales © Kirribilli Markets

Kirribilli Markets , a bi-monthly shopping extravaganza held in the Kirribilli neighbourhood at the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge , is one of Nadia’s favourite places for one-off fashion finds. “This is by far the best market in Sydney,” she says.

"It’s always bustling and vibrant, and there’s a real emphasis on second-hand, upcycling and reusing, which is so popular at the moment."

“Over the years I’ve found some great things here, like vintage Chanel earrings and a Pucci scarf you would never find anywhere else.”

Cult online shop In Bed has finally opened its first bricks-and-mortar store in Paddington, overlooking jacaranda trees and Victorian gabled rooftops. Former fashion director Pip Vasset's sunlight-filled flagship sells her signature crumpled, pastel-coloured bed linen as well as covetable buttery-soft throws, pyjamas, bath towels, kitchen kit and hand-made ceramics. Inspired by Vasset's travels, the space is quietly cool – cheese plants in terracotta pots, exposed-timber ceilings and Scandi-style furniture from Melbourne -based Made by Morgen.

AMPERSAND CAFÉ & BOOK STORE

It's easy to lose hours rootling around Ampersand, a higgledy-piggledy four-storey second-hand bookshop and café in the middle of bustling Oxford Street. The walls are lined with shelves carrying everything from cookbooks to coffee -table tomes and first editions. And it's not just the reading matter that's vintage: corners are filled with reupholstered wingback armchairs for curling up in and battered farmhouse tables that host writing workshops and crafternoons (cross-stitch, knitting), with cold-drip coffees and soy dandelion lattes on tap. For something heartier, take a seat in the café on the ground floor and order a warm banana bread, shakshuka or a steak sandwich.

Known for its comfy, loosely covered linen sofas and natural timber, MCM House is arguably Australia’s most recognisable furniture company, having imprinted its look on beachy-smart hotels including The Bower Byron Bay , Rae’s on Wategos and Bondi’s Hotel Ravesis. ‘I knew I had found my calling in life – to marry medical science to cosmetic formulation,’ says The Rationale founder Richard Parker. His products are prescribed by leading dermatologists and it’s fair to say this is the hottest Australian It brand since Aesop. The first clinic opened five years ago; there are now 11 across the country. This Woollahra outpost is no longer an in-the-know secret – there’s a waiting list for facials (provide a DNA mouth swab and come back for an ultra-bespoke treatment), but drop in for a consultation and pick up the Essential Six hero products, a powerful rush of topical minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.

FISH BUTCHERY

So much more than just a fancy fishmonger, Fish Butchery is a gallery-like hi-tech space where you can appreciate old-school craftsmanship with under-utilised types of fish that have been aged, dressed and prepared in different cuts and styles. The thrust behind the approach is to promote sustainability and move away from over-fished varieties. Owned by Josh and Julie Niland (whose restaurant Saint Peter is a few doors down), this is the place for lesser-known Australian fish such as tommy ruff and Mooloolaba mahi mahi, prepped to order by chatty staff doling out cooking advice.

Cocktails and Hats

A pioneer of the small-bar movement in Sydney, Christophe Lehoux has what you could call a quirky CV. A hobby hatmaker and previous part-owner of Pocket Bar Group, which includes Button and Stitch bars, Lehoux gave up his shares to open his own underground speakeasy combining his passion for Mistelle wine and millinery. Enter Soultrap – Sydney’s first hat bar, a curious little spot serving up French-aperitif-inspired cocktails with DJs playing vinyl and a hat studio in the back for workshops. And of course there are headwear styles from fedoras to bush-ready akubras on display and available to buy.

Located on the east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (Port Jackson), New South Wales, Australia, the Opera House was even designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007 and it is one of the finest places to visit in Sydney. Its architecture is a fusion of modernist, and ancient influences, which attracts over 8.2 million visitors every year. The eye-grabbing roof structure that looks like a white sail-shaped shell makes it the best-known landmark. It is a multipurpose place used for various performing arts facilities. It can seat only about 1,500 people during one show to offer an exceptional experience to the audience. The 2,679-seat Concert Hall is the most abundant space here that hosts choir performances, symphony concerts, and famous music shows. You can head to the Opera Theatre to watch popular Opera, dance performances and ballet shows. Further, the building houses three different sized theaters for presenting film screenings, stage plays, and shorter musical acts.On the southeastern end of the building is the Forecourt that hosts outdoor performances. There are also a professional recording studio and restaurants in the complex. Thus, if you ever plan to take a tour of Sydney, the Sydney Opera House is worth a visit to witness impressive structure as well as performances.Click Here to Book Now: Sydney Opera House Guided TourHistory of Sydney Opera HouseThe location of the Opera House earlier used to be a railroad yard of Sydney. The tale of the Sydney Opera House started in 1948 when the Sydney Opera head beckoned for a new home for the opera company. Eugene Goossens, who was the resident conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, recognized the need for a musical facility in the city. He wanted it to be home to the symphony orchestra, opera, and chamber music groups. In order to make the city identified as a world cultural capital, the New South Wales government approved his proposal. It assembled the Opera House Committee in 1954 to pick a site that further recommended Bennelong Point. A proposal request was sent to architects all across the world to submit designs for the Opera House. Finally, the design sketched out by Danish architect Jørn Utzon was declared a winner by renowned American architect Eero Saarinen. As the construction work started, people had no idea how to convert the design plan of Utzon into reality. There were political hurdles, too, during the project. The construction process slowed down certain times due to lack of funds, engineers got frustrated, and politicians doubted the idea of making the Opera House. It had a $7 million cost estimation, but actual cost rounded up to more than $100 million. So, with the proper strategies and solving the difficulties, Opera House completed in1973.Click Here to Book Now: Legoland Melbourne Tickets

Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a colossal structure which took the efforts of over 1400 workers and a time span of 8 years. The bridge was put together using over 6 million hand-driven rivets into 53,000 tonnes of steel, thus completing the construction of the world's largest steel arch Bridge. A unique fact about this bridge is that it is continuously being painted mostly to protect it from outer elements and due to its humongous size by the time the painting is done it is time to start over and this cycle is unending. The steel arch of the Bridge actually changes in size; sometimes up-to 18 cm change in its height can be seen. The Bridge's workers and caretakers once included the famous Australian Actor Paul Hogan as a rigger and his job was to erect platforms so the painters could come. The arch of the Bridge is open to climbing and has had over 3 million visitors since 1998 that came for this adventurous trip. The view from the top of the arch is mesmerizing and unbeatable. Approximately 80 % of the steel used in the bridge was actually imported from the United Kingdom and this means that the steel has traveled halfway across the world to make this bridge. History of Harbour BridgeThe plans for building this bridge were proposed originally in 1815 by Francis Greenway to Governor Lachlan Macquarie. He even wrote a letter to an Australian newspaper in 1825, elaborating on the need for a bridge to connect the two sides of the harbor. Though his idea remained in public memory, it did not end up being executed. In 1840, Robert Brindley, who was a naval architect, proposed a floating bridge, and in 1857 Engineer Peter Henderson ended up designing one of the first drawings. Finally, John Bradfield, who is now known as the father of the bridge, became the "Chief Engineer of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Metropolitan Railway Construction" in 1914. Initially, he had proposed a suspension bridge at the location, but later after visiting New York due to the First World War, and got inspired by the architecture and decided to build an arch bridge instead. This construction too was delayed, and finally took place between 1923 and 1932 when the bridge finally opened for the public. Checkout and Book Now: Sydney Harbour Cruise

News of Ovadia’s sacking comes amid a challenging period for Seven, with the controversy around Bruce Lehrmann’s  Spotlight  interview dominating headlines in recent months.

It was revealed in court that Seven had paid Lehrmann’s rent, $10,000 in Thai massages and other wild expenses in their bid to secure the exclusive interview.

Several of Seven’s big power players, including news boss Craig McPherson and  Spotlight  executive producer Craig McPherson, left the network in the wake of those revelations.

I Can’t Stop Buying Linen Napkins

tourist shopping sydney

There was certainly a point in my life where I had no interest in cloth napkins , but I started to buy them in 2020 or maybe a little before that. My grandmother collected napkins , and she would have these really beautiful dinner parties, and I remember being little and seeing her set everything up. She’s not alive anymore, but she would keep drawers of pressed cloth napkins and embroidered napkins, and in the summer, when she had our family over, she would use these gingham napkins. They became kind of nostalgic to me. She passed away during the pandemic, and since then I’ve started doing all of these things that she did, and it’s become really meaningful to me — collecting napkins is one of those things.

I joke with my husband about them — he’s like, “Do we really need all of these napkins?” But they kind of make me feel like the world is going to be okay. They’re a strange way that I can feel control in a world that feels slightly unhinged at times. So I just started collecting them with no rhyme or reason. They make my house feel homey. I have napkins that I use for breakfast that are smaller and then napkins for other meals. I always tumble-dry my napkins, and I don’t press them. Those are my rules. I’m not fussy with them at all.

MADRE Napkins in Marigold

I really like the color mustard as an alternative to white for napkins because everyone is afraid of using a white napkin. My house has a kind of English French cottage feel, and I just think of these as a neutral. They look great on a placemat . They’re not huge, and I just use them all the time. They wear really well, too. They’re great for wash and tumble-dry, don’t show many stains, and are just easy in a way that a white napkin is not.

Vintage Linen Embroidered Edge Dinner Napkins

These feel very vintage, but they don’t feel old vintage. They just feel like they’re from an era or a moment in time. They remind me of a series of napkins my grandmother had. The ones that I have like these I’ve actually never used because they’re more sentimental to me, so I’m waiting for the right dinner party or moment to use them. They make me think I’m going to start having friends over for tea . The thing about L.A., where I live, is that you spend a lot more time in people’s homes than in New York, so you’re entertaining more. I’ve been saving these for when I have my friends over for tea, which I keep telling everyone is going to be this summer.

Stone Washed Linen Napkins

I think these are the quintessential entertaining napkin — I like the black trim, I think it’s chic. It feels a little European, or maybe it’s very Ralph Lauren and very American. I can’t decide. But the detail is what makes them different from other white napkins. On a table, they pop. I have a very long picnic table in my backyard, and these come out for a summer dinner party. I have multiple sets of these types of napkins because if I’m going to have a party, I would use these the first time when they’re pressed and perfect. I rarely dry-clean — if ever, these are the only ones I’ve dry-cleaned. A white napkin, unfortunately, doesn’t last very long, so eventually they get demoted from being a dinner party napkin to a breakfast napkin.

Napa Home and Garden Bella Napkins

These are very classic and a little bit not me, in a sense. They don’t necessarily fit what I would normally use, and I think that’s why I like them. These feel extremely feminine to me, and I’ll usually bring them out for breakfast. Most of my napkins that are printed — either gingham or these napkins — I’ll bring out for breakfast or brunch. But then the napkins that I use in the evening tend to be a little more straightforward with less going on.

Wholesale Lot Of Hand-Printed Napkins

I just think these are so fun and they feel like summer to me. They feel like a good time and something you just throw down on an outside table and have a great conversation with someone. The napkin at some point is probably lying on the floor beneath you as you’re leaving, and it doesn’t matter. I think that’s the thing I keep coming back to. My house is not a fussy house. I want people to live in their jewelry, live in their clothes, use the napkin, ruin the napkin. It’s just no stress. If you spill something on these, it’s not a big deal. They feel kid friendly, too. I’ll mix a table of all printed napkins, or I’ll mix in the mustard napkins with beige napkins. I just love this idea that people are coming over, and everything’s not perfectly pulled together. That’s what always feels best. I think it puts people at ease.

TikTok is looking more and more like Yelp

Location pages now include video categories like food and drink, hotels, and shopping..

By Mia Sato , platforms and communities reporter with five years of experience covering the companies that shape technology and the people who use their tools.

The TikTok logo on a black background with pink and blue repeating logos around the edges.

TikTok is part algorithmic television, part Nextdoor group, and increasingly, part travel agent — a role the platform seems to be leaning into.

Users have been able to tag their geolocation for a while, but now, the company appears to have revamped the landing pages for certain locations like Boston, New York, and Texas. Now, instead of just showing videos that tag that location, TikTok has created categories like “food & drink,” “hotels,” and “shopping” that are filled with relevant videos.

Clicking a button labeled “explore more places” opens up an Apple Maps integration showing a map of businesses in the area that have been tagged in TikTok posts. Beneath the map is a list of locations with details like their address, price level, and how many tags the business has on TikTok. It looks less like the For You page and more like Yelp or a travel site.

TikTok page for “Boston” geolocation, showing categories like hotels and shopping, with videos underneath.

TikTok didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about when the features were introduced, but they appear to be relatively new. The updated location page isn’t available for all tagged areas.

In the last few years, TikTok has come to resemble other platforms out there — and in some cases, it has successfully replaced competitors, at least for younger people. TikTok isn’t yet a perfect Google Search replacement , but it does drive significant business to local restaurants when a video goes viral. Personally, I don’t really use sites like Yelp to find a new restaurant to try; I just search for recommendations on TikTok. Likewise, travel is huge on the platform (has anyone else seen businesses that advertise their “TikTok-famous” status?), and the company’s decision to gather and organize this type of content in one place feels like an acknowledgment of that.

The deluge of paid influencer content makes it hard to fully trust TikTok — and truthfully, other social media platforms — for recommendations. But if you’re already scrolling on TikTok and see restaurant recommendations in a city you’re planning to visit? TikTok is betting that users might just take them.
