Table of Contents

With its advanced Cruise Control system, the 2024 Toyota RAV4 continues to lead the way in innovation and features that are easy for anyone to use. Designated to make driving easier, the 2024 RAV4’s Cruise Control makes it easy and quick for drivers to stay at a set speed while handling different road conditions. The vehicle’s user-friendly interface makes this cutting-edge system easy to reach. With the push of a button, drivers can activate Cruise Control. Once turned on, the RAV4’s Cruise Control adjusts to the speed that was chosen. This makes driving on long stretches of highway or in steady-state conditions more easy and relaxing. The system also uses smart technology, like adjustable features, to change speed automatically based on how close the cars ahead are. The 2024 Toyota RAV4’s Cruise Control system shows how committed the company is to safety, ease, and a fun driving experience for all of its customers by having these cutting-edge features.

Dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range

In vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, the vehicle automatically accelerates, decelerates, and stops to match the speed changes of the preceding vehicle even if the accelerator pedal is not depressed. In constant speed control mode, the vehicle runs at a fixed speed. Use the dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range on freeways and highways.

Before using dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range

  • Driving safely is the sole responsibility of the driver. Do not rely solely on the system, and drive safely by always paying careful attention to your surroundings.
  • When the sensor may not be correctly detecting the vehicle ahead:
  • Conditions under which the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode may not function correctly:
  • Set the speed appropriately depending on the speed limit, traffic flow, road conditions, weather conditions, etc. The driver is responsible for checking the set speed.
  • Even when the system is functioning normally, the condition of the preceding vehicle as detected by the system may differ from the condition observed by the driver. Therefore, the driver must always remain alert, assess the danger of each situation, and drive safely. Relying solely on this system or assuming the system ensures safety while driving can lead to an accident, resulting in death or serious injury.
  • Switch the dynamic radar cruise control with the full-speed range setting to off, using the cruise control main switch when not in use.

Cautions regarding the driving assist systems Observe the following precautions, as there are limitations to the assistance provided by the system. Failure to do so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.

  • Assisting the driver in measuring the following distance The dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range is only intended to help the driver in determining the following distance between the driver’s vehicle and a designated vehicle traveling ahead. It is not a mechanism that allows careless or inattentive driving, and it is not a system that can assist the driver in low-visibility conditions. It is still necessary for drivers to pay close attention to the vehicle’s surroundings.
  • Assisting the driver to judge proper following distance

The dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range determines whether the distance between the driver’s vehicle and a designated vehicle traveling ahead is within a set range. It is not capable of making any other type of judgment. Therefore, it is necessary for the driver to remain vigilant and to determine whether or not there is a possibility of danger in any given situation.

  • Assisting the driver to operate the vehicle

The dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range does not include functions that will prevent or avoid collisions with vehicles ahead of your vehicle. Therefore, if there is ever any possibility of danger, the driver must take immediate and direct control of the vehicle and act appropriately to ensure the safety of all involved.

Situations unsuitable for dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range Do not use dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range in any of the following situations. Doing so may result in inappropriate speed control and could cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.

  • Roads where there are pedestrians, cyclists, etc.
  • In heavy traffic
  • On roads with sharp bends
  • On winding roads
  • On slippery roads, such as those covered with rain, ice, or snow
  • On steep downhills, or where there are sudden changes between sharp up and down gradients Vehicle speed may exceed the set speed when driving down a steep hill.
  • At entrances to freeways and highways
  • When weather conditions are bad enough they may prevent the sensors from detecting correctly (fog, snow, sandstorm, heavy rain, etc.)
  • When there is rain, snow, etc. on the front surface of the radar or front camera
  • In traffic conditions that require frequent repeated acceleration and deceleration
  • When your vehicle is towing a trailer or during emergency towing
  • When an approach warning buzzer is heard often

To activate cruise control, first, ensure your vehicle is in motion. Then, press the “ON-OFF” button on the steering wheel to turn on the cruise control.

Cruise control in the 2024 RAV4 typically operates at speeds of 25 mph (40 km/h) or higher.

Once cruise control is on, accelerate to your desired speed, then press the “SET” button on the steering wheel to set that speed.

Yes, you can increase or decrease the set speed by using the “+” and “-” buttons on the steering wheel.

To cancel cruise control, simply press the “CANCEL” button on the steering wheel, or tap the brake pedal.

Yes, if you cancel cruise control and want to resume at the previously set speed, press the “RES” (resume) button on the steering wheel.

Cruise control can generally be used independently.

Some models may be equipped with adaptive cruise control, which can automatically adjust the speed to maintain a safe following distance.

To turn off cruise control entirely, press the “ON-OFF” button on the steering wheel until the system is deactivated.

Cruise control is generally designed for use on highways and open roads. Avoid using it in heavy traffic, city driving, or on slippery surfaces.

The cruise control system may automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed to maintain the set speed on inclines and declines.

The vehicle may have warning lights or sounds to alert you if there are issues with the cruise control system.

Always remain attentive while using cruise control. Be ready to take control of the vehicle, and avoid using cruise control in situations where quick reactions are needed.

The maximum speed at which you can set the cruise control on the 2024 Toyota RAV4 is determined by the legal speed limits and regulations in your region. Use the “SET” button to set the desired speed.

Yes, you can temporarily disable cruise control by tapping the brake pedal or pressing the “CANCEL” button on the steering wheel. This allows you to resume cruise control without having to reset the speed.

  • July 14, 2023

Do you have a new Toyota RAV4, and you’re wondering how to use the cruise control? Wonder no more, for we have researched this question, and we have the answer for you.

Follow these simple steps to use the cruise control of your Toyota RAV4:

  • Activate cruise control from the control stick at the steering wheel.
  • Accelerate to the speed you want to maintain.
  • Press the control stick down to set the speed.
  • You can now let go of the accelerator, and the cruise control will take over.

How to operate the cruise control on Toyota RAV4?

The succeeding sections have detailed instructions and tips for using the standard cruise control on Toyota RAV4.

How to turn on cruise control on Toyota RAV4?

The control stick is often located at the lower right side of the steering wheel. Press the button at the tip of the control stick to activate cruise control. A green cruise control icon will light up in the instrument display panel once cruise control has been activated and ready.

How to set your desired speed for cruise control?

Press the control stick down to set the speed once you’ve accelerated to your desired speed.

Keep in mind that cruise control has a minimum speed required to activate. Setting the speed to lower than this minimum will deactivate cruise control.

Check your owner’s manual to find out the minimum cruise control speed. This minimum can be different from model to model.

How to change speed on cruise control?

You can still increase the speed while cruise control is on and there is already a set speed.

Press the accelerator pedal, and your RAV4 will accelerate beyond your set cruise control speed. This is a temporary speed that stays active only while you’re pressing the accelerator pedal. Your speed will return to the set speed once you release the accelerator pedal.

To permanently increase the set speed on cruise control:

  • Push the control stick or control level up and hold it there.
  • Accelerate to your new desired speed.
  • Release the control lever, and the system will maintain the new set speed.

Can you decrease the speed on cruise control?

The interior of the car Toyota Rav4 with a view of the steering wheel, dashboard

  • Push the control stick or lever down and hold it at that position.
  • Press the brake pedal until you decelerate your desired speed.
  • Release the control lever, and the system will save the new speed.

How do you disable cruise control?

There might be instances where you want to temporarily disable cruise control for a short period. Suspending the cruise control will allow your RAV4 to temporarily stop using cruise control until you reenable it.

Follow the steps below to suspend and reactivate cruise control:

  • Pull the control stick towards you or tap the brake pedal.
  • Briefly push the control stick or control lever upward and release it once you’ve decided to resume cruise control.

While cruise control is suspended, it's essential to be aware:

  • The stored set speed will be erased if your speed drops to 10 MPH below the set speed.
  • Pressing the cruise control on/off button turns off cruise control.
  • Turning off the ignition (for some reason) will turn off cruise control.
  • You can use the cruise control on/off button to reactivate cruise control when the indicator light on the instrument display turns off and then on.

How to operate the adaptive cruise control on Toyota RAV4?

A middle-aged man in Toyota RAV4 Hybrid driving on a highway

Adaptive cruise control is an improved version of the standard cruise control system that was first introduced to select trims of Toyota RAV4 in 2016. It has all the functionality of a standard cruise control plus a radar system that monitors the vehicle's distance directly ahead of you.

The radar system informs your onboard computer if the vehicle in front of you has entered the minimum distance set or if the vehicle is still beyond this minimum distance. Once the vehicle directly in front of you enters the minimum distance, your RAV4 will automatically engage the brakes and slow down to match the speed of the vehicle in front.

Once the vehicle accelerates, your RAV4 will also accelerate until it reaches your set speed, even if the vehicle in front accelerates to a speed that is faster than your set speed.

Operating the adaptive cruise control is the same as operating the standard cruise control. The only difference between the two is that the adaptive cruise control allows you to change the standard distance (the standard distance is a factory preset) between your RAV4 and the vehicle directly in front of you.

How do I change the distance on my adaptive cruise control?

To change the standard distance, press the radar range button -the button with an icon of a car with radar waves coming from the front- on the lower right side of your steering wheel. Keep pressing the button to cycle through the different distances.

Instead of exact distances expressed in feet, the Multi Information Display screen will show you a blue bar under the image of a small car at the very top. A single bar is the closest distance, two bars represent medium distance, and three bars are the farthest that the system can maintain the distance between you and the vehicles directly in front of you. The number of blue bars changes as you press the radar range button.

Can I disable adaptive cruise control?

When you disable the distance holding feature of adaptive cruise control, it will function as standard cruise control.

To disable the distance holding feature, press the control stick or control lever and wait until the indicator light on the instrumentation displace panel disappears. The indicator light for the standard cruise control will then light up to replace the adaptive cruise control indicator light.

What is full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control?

This feature is similar to the first two types of cruise control with the addition of a speed control feature.

RAV4 trims equipped with this feature will have a circular button on the right side of the steering wheel where the set distance button for the adaptive cruise control is located. The circular button has a plus sign on top and a minus sign at the bottom.

This feature is called full-speed range because it easily increases or decreases the set speed for your cruise control. Just press the plus or minus button to add or remove from the set target cruise control speed.

This feature allows you to increase the set speed on highways when you need to and reduce the set speed when exiting the highway. All this speed adjustment incorporates the radar feature that monitors the distance of your RAV4 from the vehicle that is directly in front of you. This helps maintain safety despite increasing the speed.

The maximum speed that can be set through this feature can be different between models and trims. Consult your owner’s manual to determine the maximum speed you can set on your RAV4 model or trim.

Which other Toyota cars have adaptive cruise control?

The following models have adaptive cruise control. The year in brackets is when adaptive cruise control became first available on that model.

  • Toyota Prius and Prius Prime [2016]
  • Toyota Camry [2018]
  • Toyota C-HR [2018]
  • Toyota Avalon [2017]
  • Toyota Land Cruiser [2018]
  • Toyota Corolla Sedan [2017]

When not to use cruise control?

Toyota advises not to use any cruise control in any of the situations listed below:

  • Roads with pedestrians or cyclists
  • Slippery roads
  • Roads with steep downhills
  • Driving on roads with sharp bends
  • When towing a trailer
  • Entering a highway
  • When you need to accelerate and slow down intermittently
  • While driving in bad weather since snow or heavy rain can affect the operation of the sensors
  • Driving behind motorcycles, trailers with no load, and vehicles with high clearance can affect sensor operation
  • Driving on narrow and curvy roads
  • When your RAV4 is not directly facing the lane ahead of it
  • When driving on a road where preceding vehicles are likely to slow down quickly

Using the cruise control in RAV4 is easy because there is a dedicated control lever to activate and modify its settings. Even the two more advanced versions of cruise control are still easy to use.

How to engage Cruise Control?

toyota rav4 cruise control

  • Add to quote

This is an embarrassing post but I need to ask: We have a 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime and have 23,000 miles on it. We are driving to Florida to visit our daughter and decided to try the Cruise Control for the first time without success. I opened the manual and tried to follow the directions there without it working. I have never had a problem with Cruise Control before (either regular or adaptive CC). Anybody have any suggestions as to what to do Or what I am doing wrong?

Do you happen to have it in trail mode? Cruise does not work in trail mode. Sometimes the trail button gets accidentally pressed.

No it was in HV mode on hwy.

You do have to turn it on first, the right button on the steering wheel. When turned on, there will be a message on the MID saying that it is now available.

FWIW, I and others find the cruise control buttons to be very sensitive. It is quite easy to "fat finger" them, and the normal fat finger mode is that the cruise control off button in the center inadvertently gets pushed. In the winter or in cold conditions it's very difficult to operate the buttons with gloves on.

The problem is that the buttons are all physically connected by the circle that you press. If you press the set or resume buttons a little to the right or the labels, the cruise control shuts off. I now try to target hitting those buttons a bit to the left of the labels to prevent inadvertently shutting off the cruise control.

It's very simple, but I agree it's not at all intuitive. Here's what I do: First, distinguish between radar cruise control and constant cruise control. Press the right side of the right control to turn on the radar version, and keep pressing to use constant. Then it will tell you in the center display which one is ready to use. The Set and Cancel buttons will then work as expected.

trail mode silently disables cruise, no message, it just won't activate otherwise, not in trail mode.... if you press cruise button, do you get any green icon or message on dash ?

I resorted to an old fashioned pencil with rubber eraser tip to use the buttons with my gloves on in winter. I definitely do not like the Toyota arrangement as it requires way to much looking off the road ahead to ensure its engaged. They need better seperation between the segments and tactile feedback.

I do agree. There should be individual buttons for the three functions, not a circular button. They could be in the shape of a circle, just have individual buttons.

stubby cruise sticks never bothered me, they should bring them back... but then... marketing dictates customers want more stuff integrated into the steering wheel front face

My first car with the adaptive cruise feature, I love that, but I find that I miss it, and have to remember I don't have it, when using the basic cruise in my Mack crane truck, which I log more miles on than my Prime.

toyota rav4 cruise control

When I am in my garage, and I first start the car, even before I am moving, I push the right side of the Cruise control button. If a green icon appears on the screen behind the steering wheel, I know I have activated the CC. It's easy for me to check, because I haven't even started moving yet. When I do start driving I only have to concentrate on the bottom button to set speed, or the top button to resume speed. Every time I step on the brake I will have to hit the top button again to resume. If I concentrate on just the top and bottom, I seldom hit the center cancel button. Even if I did, and I feel myself slowing down, I just hit the top button again to resume. Even in stop and go city driving, when I often hit the brake, I'm just as often hitting the top button to resume. Just activate as soon as you start the car (before you're moving) when you are not distracted by driving, then train your muscle memory to just do top and bottom buttons and you're golden. I like this system better than the old stalk because the buttons are labeled. Maybe that's just me. Enjoy this wonderful car (after you're practiced enough).

Toyota Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (19 Popular Models)

Once only seen on luxury vehicles, adaptive cruise control has become standard in many models, including Toyotas.

The following Toyota cars, SUVs, trucks, and minivans have adaptive cruise control.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system is available.

toyota

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The first iteration of the more-basic cruise control system in older Toyota models helps the vehicle maintain a steady speed, ideal for highway cruising.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle in front, especially when the latter slows down.

When the vehicle ahead changes lanes or accelerates, the ACC will return your car to the speed you set.

Newer Toyotas have Toyota Safety Sense, a bundle of active safety features which include dynamic radar cruise control.

The following rival makes also have popular models with ACC:

  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .
