3 ways a virtual factory tour can benefit your business

3 ways a virtual factory tour can benefit your business

In 2020, the digital twin market was valued at $3 billion , and it is expected to grow to $48 billion by 2026. As one of the early adopters of the technology, the manufacturing sector continues to invest heavily in digital technologies for real-time analytics, predictive maintenance, and IoT capabilities.

Despite the manufacturing sector facing constantly increasing demand and a rapidly evolving technology landscape, digital transformation has rarely proven a straightforward process. For example, factory documentation has long suffered from inconsistencies due to myriad different systems and processes in use. Often, stakeholders do not have the level of visibility they would like to have into their production environments and supply chains.

In this article, we’ll look at how digital twins and virtual tours of production facilities present an improved alternative to conventional formats like corporate videos and presentations – or in-person visits.

navvis-factory-tour-image1

What is a virtual factory tour?

A virtual factory tour is exactly what it sounds like – an immersive tour of your whole production environment. The most immersive experiences are those powered by digital twins, which are entire digital replicas of your production facilities. A digital factory combines 360-degree virtual tours with augmented and virtual reality to give clients, employees, and stakeholders a chance to view your production facilities.

This brings about a variety of benefits, such as the following:

1. Build customer trust

More than ever, customers want a behind-the-scenes look at how their products are created. In the B2B space, clients are considerably more demanding. Many have stringent corporate social responsibility (CSR) and vendor-management policies, which typically require them to have considerable insight into the practices and procedures of those they do business with. A virtual factory tour, which can be shared via email and accessed 24/7 via a web browser, offers an information-rich experience that builds trust and transparency.

Virtual factory tours are similarly valuable in vendor and partner relationship management, since they offer complete visibility across the production chain.

2. Enhance employee training

The hazardous nature of manufacturing environments like auto shops and other production facilities means that worker safety must be a top priority. Traditionally, training had to be done exclusively on-site. However, thanks to virtual factory tours, new hires can now be given tours of your facilities and learn how to operate your production facilities in a risk-free environment. A virtual factory tour serves as a good primer for employee training, as well as for introducing contractors and vendors to your production facilities in a safe environment.

3. Reduce business risk

The above benefits combine to significantly reduce operational and business risk. Employees can be fully acquainted with your production facilities before they start working on the shop floor. Stakeholders can enjoy complete visibility over their investments, and customers can enjoy an inside look at where and how their products are made. Together, these advantages reduce the risks to your brand by enabling complete transparency.

navvis-factory-tour-image2

The future of virtual factory tours

Many manufacturers first started to realize these benefits during the coronavirus pandemic, when virtual factory tours saw a massive update. Major companies like Siemens and Audi are just two well-known examples of manufacturers which have successfully adopted the virtual factory tour model in the wake of the pandemic.

However, the benefits of virtual factory tours go far beyond the short-term mitigation effects needed during the pandemic. They reduce travel costs, enhance transparency across global production environments, and provide an engaging and immersive new way to tour factories in a risk-free and readily accessible environment.

Toyota Virtual Plant Tours Open Window to the Wonders of the Line

Toyota Virtual Plant Tours Open Window to the Wonders of the Line

A towering robot, standing 20 feet tall, gently scoops up a truck cab high above the factory floor. In one fluid motion, the monster robot pivots and lowers the unpainted cab, weighing 1500 pounds, onto the moving line where team members wait to inspect it. Nothing stops, not even for a moment, as the choreographed precision of assembling a new Toyota Tundra contributes to the arrival of a finished vehicle off the line every minute.

The world of manufacturing new Toyota cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans is actually many worlds that all work together. Metal stamping, the paint shop, plastics shop, “dropping” or “lifting” the engine into the frame, installing seats and dashboards are just a few of them. Now, the processes and people of those worlds are available as virtual experiences through the new Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) Education Hub, launched in time for this year’s Manufacturing Month. Through the legendary Toyota Production System (TPS), the question, “How are cars made?” is answered.

In total, Toyota’s 14 North American manufacturing facilities assemble nearly 70% of the vehicles Toyota sells in the U.S. The immersive online experience provides visitors with a fun and educational way to learn more about a few of the plants, as well as the science and core philosophies that go into each and every Toyota vehicle.

Go behind the scenes to see the transformation of metal into road-ready machines; all that’s needed is a computer and curiosity. Count the layers of paint needed to coat one vehicle. Go inside the body weld shop as robots attach each part of the vehicle to create a shell body. Meet the “co-bots” that work alongside the human teammates—also known as industrial athletes–to make their jobs easier.

A Riveting Curriculum

Virtual Plant Tours are for everyone, student and automotive enthusiast alike. For visitors who have not yet chosen a career path, Toyota’s commitment to engaging and inspiring the public to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), through advanced manufacturing is rooted in its mission to contribute to its local communities.

The tours aren’t purely mechanical, though. Putting a human face on the work of each plant is also part of the experience.

In Princeton, Indiana , Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana President Leah Curry takes visitors on a virtual walk as she shows off the Toyota plant based in her hometown. The Toyota Indiana Experience Center features virtual reality opportunities so spectators can take an immersive look at the facility’s paint booth and stamp shop in VR.

To assemble Tundras and Tacomas, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas uses state-of-the-art technologies like Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), which deliver parts across the assembly floor. But the human eye and touch are critical to the production of quality vehicles. Technology assists, but there is no substitute for the trained, passionate members of the Toyota teams who assure that each car, truck, SUV or van that rolls off the line meets exacting standards.

And while the inner working of the plants are technological wonders, Toyota is much more than the vehicles it produces. Visitors can also tour the Toyota Experience Center at the automaker’s headquarters in Plano, Texas, which features nine different galleries that share the history and innovations of Toyota through the years. Check out the Motorsports Gallery, which shares Toyota’s racing history, and learn about the most current Toyota and Lexus models in the Here and Now Gallery.

Stepping up for STEM

In addition to the plant tours, the Education Hub includes a series of free STEM-based lessons and a curriculum through Toyota USA Foundation partners. Virtual field trips , like “Toyota Under the Hood: The Science Behind Safe Driving,” provide an inside look at the innovation and teamwork that go into designing each Toyota or Lexus vehicle.

By promoting careers in STEM, Toyota hopes Education Hub programming will encourage and empower students to seek opportunities, including those who are underrepresented in tech, such as women and people of color, or those who live in communities where opportunities may be limited.

Education, exposure to career paths in manufacturing and Toyota’s longstanding commitment to workforce development in the U.S. are foundational to the company’s goal of mobility for all. After all, when you’re free to move, anything is possible. And that’s an idea even Godzilla can get behind.

Select a location below for an inside look at some of Toyota’s state-of-the-art automotive manufacturing plants:

Princeton, Indiana Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI) Production: Highlander , Sequoia and Sienna

Ever stamp a picture of a car on a piece of paper? Now imagine stamping out a real-life car frame from sheets of metal — piece by piece. To produce over 6 million vehicles (and counting!), Toyota Indiana uses advanced technologies like Toyota’s New Global Architecture and robots to create smarter manufacturing, to help ensure quality and reduce fatigue. The Indiana facility also utilizes wearable technology (no, not a smart watch) to help employees move around safely and efficiently. For example, an exoskeleton — which looks like a harness —  provides support and gives employees a boost to help them work on something that’s too high up.

Huntsville, Alabama   Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama (TMMAL) Production: Engines

As Toyota’s largest engine producer in North America, Toyota Alabama produces over 3,000 engines every single day — that’s more than 7 million engines since the plant opened in 2001. If each engine ever built in the plant powered a vehicle 200,000 miles, they would go from the earth to the sun and back over 7,500 times. The campus has expanded four times, growing to over 1,400 employees inside a 1,200,000-square-foot facility.

San Antonio, Texas Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX) Production: Tacoma and Tundra

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas uses advanced manufacturing technologies to roll a new truck off the assembly line every 60 seconds! In one day, that’s approximately 1,000 trucks. As the fastest line of any North American vehicle plant, more than 3,000 employees, and an additional 4,000 employees at on-site suppliers, work together with their robot coworkers to assemble safe, quality trucks for Toyota customers. The weld shop is home to over 400 robots alone!

Jackson, Tennessee Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Tennessee (TMMTN) Production: Cylinder blocks and transmission components

Get a glimpse of the 200 acres of Toyota Tennessee, where the skilled team produces up to 1.7 million engine blocks every year. A top 10 company for diversity, the advanced manufacturing team in Tennessee embodies the Toyota pillar of continuous improvement.

Georgetown, Kentucky     Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK) Production: Avalon , Camry , RAV4 Hybrid , ES 350 , engines and components

Virtual visitors to the plant in Georgetown, Kentucky won’t get exhausted traveling the length of 156 football fields to get an overview of the almost 9 million-square-foot facility. While touring the largest Toyota manufacturing plant in the world, viewers will see the die manufacturing shop, which builds dies, or “cookie cutters” (sorry, you can’t cook with them) for parts like doors and fenders, for Toyota plants across the country.

Buffalo, West Virginia Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia (TMMWV) Production: Engines and automatic transmissions

As the only North American plant to build engines, transmissions and hybrid transaxles under the same roof, Toyota West Virginia is one of the largest companies in the state. The nearly 2,000 employees complete more than a million engines and transmissions each year, rolling a new transmission off the assembly line about every 25 seconds — some of the fastest production times for Toyota globally.

Blue Springs, Mississippi Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Mississippi (TMMMS) Production: Corolla

Home of the Corolla, the Toyota facility in Blue Springs, Mississippi, has assembled nearly 2 million vehicles with the help of the Toyota Production System (TPS). It takes employees approximately 20 hours to build each Corolla. That’s about as long as it takes to drive from Blue Springs to Boston. Luckily, employees at the Mississippi plant have a little help from “Godzilla.” As strong as its namesake, the original king of the monsters, this large material-handling robot looks like a big metal arm and can work with loads up to one ton!

Troy, Missouri   Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Missouri (TMMMO) Production: Cylinder heads

Toyota Missouri builds aluminum cylinder heads, the “lungs” of an engine, for every car, truck and SUV that Toyota assembles in North America. On the Missouri tour, go deep into the plant’s casting facility and get a closer look at the steel molds and sand cores that help form the cylinder heads.

Factory Virtual Tour

A factory virtual tour is a digital representation of a manufacturing facility or industrial plant created using technology like 360-degree photography, 3D scanning , or virtual reality. This virtual tour allows viewers to explore the factory's various areas, machinery, processes, and facilities remotely, providing an immersive and interactive experience. Here's how a factory virtual tour works and its potential benefits:

How a Factory Virtual Tour Works:

  • Data Capture : Specialized cameras or 3D scanners capture images or scans of different sections of the factory, including production areas, machinery, assembly lines, storage, and more.
  • Data Stitching and Processing : The captured images or scans are processed and stitched together to create a cohesive and navigable virtual environment.
  • Interactive Navigation : Users can explore the factory virtually by navigating through the different areas using on-screen controls. They can move in all directions to get a comprehensive view.
  • Information Hotspots : Interactive hotspots can be added to provide details about specific machinery, processes, safety protocols, and other relevant information.
  • Annotations : Annotations or text descriptions can highlight key features, machinery specifications, or production stages.

Benefits of a Factory Virtual Tour:

  • Remote Exploration : Stakeholders, clients, investors, or potential partners can virtually visit the factory from anywhere, overcoming geographical limitations.
  • Realistic Representation : The virtual tour accurately represents the factory's layout, machinery, and facilities, providing a clear understanding of the operational environment.
  • Process Understanding : Viewers can gain insights into manufacturing processes, workflow, and production stages.
  • Training and Education : Virtual tours can be used for employee training, showcasing safety protocols, equipment usage, and best practices.
  • Transparency : Virtual tours can build transparency and trust by providing an authentic view of the factory's operations.
  • Remote Collaboration : Engineers, designers, and other professionals can collaborate remotely by exploring and discussing factory setups and processes.
  • Marketing and Promotion : Factory tours can be embedded on the company's website or shared on social media platforms, enhancing marketing efforts and customer engagement.
  • Visitor Preview : Potential visitors or clients can preview the factory environment before scheduling a physical visit.
  • Historical Documentation : Virtual tours can serve as an archival record of the factory's layout and processes at a specific point in time.
  • Safety and Compliance : Virtual tours can be used to demonstrate compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.

A factory virtual tour can be particularly beneficial for manufacturing companies looking to showcase their facilities to clients, partners, investors, or for educational purposes. It offers a dynamic and engaging way to provide insights into the inner workings of a factory without the need for physical presence.

25 Best Factory Tours in America for Families Who Love to Go Behind the Scenes

Find out what it takes to construct a jellybean, giant plane and everything in between.

preview for Take A Tour Of The Peeps Factory, Where More Than 5 Million Peeps Are Made Every Single Day

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

After a prolonged period of being stuck at home, some families are looking to travel again. And while the COVID-19 pandemic means that precautions still have to be taken, and not every destination is up and running at 100% capacity, there's still plenty of unique experiences out there that are once again open to the public.

The following factory tours and appropriate for kids, are well-reviewed by families and are currently open to visitors (or will be opening soon). But you might want to book ahead — some require timed tickets or reservations before you visit. But when you're done, you'll all know a little bit more about how the world around you is made.

Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory (Louisville, Kentucky)

Everyone can try out bats from iconic players, like Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter. With plenty of photo ops (including your crew inside a giant baseball mitt) and a free mini bat souvenir for every guest, this tour will be a home run. Open daily; $ 18 for adults, $11 for ages 6 – 12, free for ages 5 and under

Jelly Belly Visitor Center & Factory (Fairfield, California)

From your perch above the production line, you’ll witness all the steps — slurry, steam bath, glossy application — it takes to create the gourmet jellybeans that have been a thing since the late 1800s. Video screens provide close-ups and fun facts (like it takes 1 – 2 weeks to make a jellybean). Feeling hungry? Stop at the café for a jellybean-shaped pizza. Open daily (but factory workers are typically there only on weekdays), $5 for adults, $2 for ages 2 and up, free for younger kids

11 of the Best Digital Factory Tour Sites in the U.S.

If you ever get the opportunity to go on a factory tour of the Tesla plant in Fremont, California, then you’ll get to meet two of the world’s largest robots—Cyclops and Thunderbird. I actually learned this tidbit from video footage captured by the CBS5 KIPX San Francisco news team . They were given the rare opportunity to bring cameras into the Tesla factory.

Usually, the only way to go behind-the-scenes is by taking a plant or factory tour in person. However, some companies don’t offer factory tours to the general public. For example, Tesla only allows owners of its cars to tour their plant, making the cost of a tour at least $35,000 .

Other popular U.S. consumer brands offer factory tours, but their factories are overseas. For a glimpse of an Apple iPhone factory , you need to go to Shanghai, China.

If you’re lucky, you might be able to track down a digital (video, website or app) factory tour to get a teaser of how your favorite products are made. Digital factory tours are hard to find. Most companies don’t produce them because competitors will scour them to see what proprietary secrets might slip through. That’s why cameras and cell phones are often banned when you go on a factory tour.

But some carefully crafted digital factory tours do exist, mostly to entice you into taking the next step to plan an onsite tour. As you’ll see in the following, some work better than others.

Amazon Fulfillment Center

Tour any or all of six fulfillment centers located across the U.S. Their video has the most rock guitar of all of them and follows a stuffed bear through the factory.

Anheuser Busch

Experience almost 165 years of Anheuser-Busch brewing history with a tour of the St. Louis Brewery . See some of what’s available on the tours in this video about the Budweiser Brewery Tour App .

Located in Everett, Washington (about 25 miles north of Seattle), tours of this airplane manufacturing plant cost $20 for adults, $14 for youths 15 and under. You might be able to see part of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner assembly process.

Ford Rouge Factory Tour

Ford makes the F-150 truck in Dearborn, Michigan, just outside of Detroit. Tickets for adults are $17. The tour includes the truck plant, a museum and the Manufacturing Innovation Theater , which looks awesome.

It doesn’t get any more “America’s Heartland” than touring a John Deere plant in Des Moines, Iowa. The video is actually closer to a tour than a commercial. In fact, I think it’s the actual video shown at the beginning of the 1.5-hour onsite tour .

A sports-utility vehicle descending the steep grade of an unpaved road through a forest. In the foreground a sign states “70% slope”.

The plant in Tuscaloosa was the first Mercedes passenger vehicle plant outside of Germany. Book the $5 plant tour . Watch the plant overview video . Tuscaloosa is also home to the Mercedes-Benz off-road test track , which appears to be quite the feat of landscape engineering.

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

You need to sign up ahead of time for this tour . Since it’s NASA, you’ll also need government-issued identification. While security is a bit stiffer, you can take a camera on the tour. Meanwhile, you can see some of the laboratory in some of this video on how to build a clean space machine .

Sierra Nevada

This one’s a little different. It’s actually a Google Maps tour of the brewery in Chico, California. Scroll to the bottom of the page to access the tour. On the way, you’ll see all of your options for onsite tours.

STIHL Chainsaws

Many companies also use the factory tour as a recruitment tool. Such is the case with this STIHL video factory tour . STIHL also as a virtual factory tour .

When it comes to factory tours, Tabasco really spices it up! Their 10-stop tour takes you through the factory, salt mine and more in Avery Island, Louisiana. See the highlights in this video , featuring slo-mo, drone and historical footage!

In Georgetown, Kentucky, Toyota builds its Camry, Avalon, and Lexus ES 350 models. The tour is free and gives you a front row seat for a symphony of “Kentucky craftsmanship.”

Grab your passport

Exterior of the Volkswagen Wolfsburg Plant.

I confined my “digital tours” to the contiguous U.S. If you decide you want to take an international factory tour, then add three of the largest buildings in the world to your bucket list: the Volkswagen Wolfsburg Plant (the largest factory in the world ), the Hyundai Ulsan plant in South Korea and the Airbus Jean-Luc Lagardere Plant in France.

While digital factory tours can be informative and even entertaining, nothing beats being there in person. Manufacturing plants can be noisy environments , but after going on a factory tour you’ll have an even deeper appreciation of how a product is made as well as a greater appreciation for the people who make it.

From learning about old Fort Yellowstone to discovering park anomalies like Mud Volcano, these tours are a great way for kids to discover unique facts about America.

It's not always easy to read the signs in the exhibits.

This iconic museum is dedicated to understanding the natural world and humanity's place in it. There's so much to see it can't possibly be listed here. However, the museum offers an online tour of most of its exhibits. Split this tour up into multiple lessons, so kids don't get overwhelmed.

Skip the ground floor and go straight to the first or second floors.

Best Aquarium Virtual Tour: National Aquarium

Easy to find exhibits.

Fun to explore using the 360-degree options.

Some scenes spin quickly, which can frustrate young learners.

Baltimore's National Aquarium features more than 20,000 aquatic animals. Kids can click and drag images to navigate their way around and use arrows, the map, or a scene list to explore various exhibits. Explore eight areas, such as the Amazon River, a tropical rain forest, and jellyfish.

Best Tours of the World: AirPano

Bright, well-produced videos and images.

Offers tours of numerous countries.

Includes video and still frame-images.

What's not to like?

AirPano has a variety of tours in China, Portugal, Switzerland, and more countries. Children can visit the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge in China, an underwater cave in Indonesia, ski resorts in France, and more destinations around the globe.

What makes this site so good is that it offers narrations of several tours, provides closeups through interactive actions, and includes short chunks of written information that's easy for kids of most ages to read. The tours are also fairly short, which makes these tours great for younger kids, but older kids will still enjoy the trip.

Best Virtual Tour for Car Lovers: Lane Motor Museum

Totally unique tour.

There's no way to tell what a specific vehicle is unless you know cars.

Scroll to the bottom of the link to watch a fun virtual tour of one of the most unique car museums in the world. Lane Motor Museum is home to an oddball collection of vehicles dating from the 1920s up to modern times.

Your child will love seeing amphibious vehicles, microcars, prototypes, and more. The tour is easy to click through and offers six angles to entertain viewers.

The tours are narrated and give great, quick facts to help kids learn in simple, straightforward ways. All tours are appropriate for grades 3 through 12 but are marked with notes about the grades most likely to enjoy the tour.

Best Historical Tour: Ellis Island

A clear explanation of Ellis Island, how it worked, and why it was needed.

Includes children asking questions of tour guides.

The images in much of the tour are small in order to focus on the tour guides.

Ellis Island is a key piece of American history. This virtual tour offers lots of anecdotes and features actual guides from Ellis Island telling stories. Plus, it includes lots of pictures and views of the island.

It's more appropriate for fourth grade and up, mainly due to the litany of facts and complexity of the information provided.

Best Slime-Based Virtual Tour: Slime in Space

Nickelodeon

It's playful and educational.

Good production values.

Fun experiments.

It's a video, not an interactive virtual tour.

What happens to Nickelodeon's iconic slime when it's in space? That's the concept behind the Slime in Space virtual field trip. Featuring real astronauts and Nickelodeon celebrities, the 15-minute video shows kids how slime and water react in a microgravity environment 250 miles above the Earth. Along the way, it answers burning questions like, "Is slime a solid or a liquid?" and "Can you slime a person in space?" (The answer is: yes, very slowly.)

Best Virtual Zoo Tour: San Diego Zoo

Live cams of the animals.

A variety of educational videos.

Fun games and activities.

Fixed camera angles mean you're not always guaranteed to see the animals.

The San Diego Zoo is home to more than 3,500 animals of more than 650 species and subspecies. It's widely considered one of the best zoos in the world. But, if you can't make it to California, it has a robust virtual experience online.

You can peek in on the animals through live cams. There's also a variety of videos that teach kids about vultures or show them how to draw a tiger, for example. There are also zoo-related games and activities kids can do at home.

Best General Farm Tour: FarmFood 360

360-degree views of the farm.

There's an app available for Android and iOS devices, and it's compatible with some virtual reality headsets.

Best Virtual Planetarium: Stellarium

Realistic night sky simulation.

Mobile apps are available.

Includes a telescope control module for experienced astronomers.

Can be difficult to navigate.

The mobile apps aren't free, but the money supports the project.

Stellarium Web is an online planetarium created by two brothers. Offering an accurate and realistic view of the night sky, it lets you pan around and spot stars, satellites, and other celestial bodies.

It offers mobile apps for Android and iOS that aren't free. The money goes toward paying server and development costs for the two-person project.

Best Living-History Virtual Tour: Colonial Williamsburg

Next best thing to being there.

The virtual scavenger hunt.

The virtual tours are highly interactive.

Virtual tour models can load slowly.

Condensation or inclement weather can obstruct the webcam views.

Colonial Williamsburg is a living-history museum in Virginia that offers a glimpse at what life was like in the 18th century. Its virtual tour is highly interactive and includes videos, informational signs, and 3D models you can rotate.

With its various webcams, you can see the armory, courthouse, merchants square, and more. Colonial Williamsburg's website also offers a virtual scavenger hunt your kids can participate in as they tour the area.

Best European Museum Virtual Tour: The Louvre

It's the Louvre.

The website offers a list of online family-friendly activities.

The virtual tours include a map and an information button.

The website offers limited language options.

Sure, we'd love to jet off to France and tour its fabulous museums personally. But if that's not an option, the Louvre has several virtual tours available on its website. The offerings include exhibitions on the body in movement, founding myths, Egyptian antiquities, and more.

The Louvre also has a handy list of family-friendly online resources everyone can enjoy, including a Mona Lisa VR experience.

Best Factory Virtual Tour: M&M Factory Tour

Zoonar RF / Getty Images

Who doesn't love chocolate?

360-degree views of the factory.

It's short.

The Food Network teamed up with candy maker Mars to give M&M fans a virtual tour of one of its factories. During the short YouTube video, viewers can pan around as a tour guide explains how unrefined chocolate is turned into the little candies we know and love.

Best General Virtual Tour Resource: Discovery Education

An eclectic variety of virtual field trips.

Watch live or on demand.

Trips come with a companion guide packed with activities.

A schedule of when field trips go live would be nice.

Discovery Education offers a variety of virtual field trips for kids learning from home. The offerings change often but currently include an NFL experience, a doodling experience meant to encourage creativity, and a virtual field trip through the internet of things. You can watch the field trips live or catch the videos later on-demand.

Super fun 360° Virtual Factory Tours

virtual factory tours

The times, they are a-changin’. A month ago, I wrote a post called “10 Screen-free Indoor Activities.” The shelter in place mandate had just taken effect, and I wanted to help parents keep their kids off screens. Now, a month later, we rely on screens to keep us connected to others. We can also use them to take us places we can’t visit in person. Along those lines, I found 15 super fun 360° virtual factory tours for kids of all ages to enjoy.

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission from products purchased from my links.

360° Virtual Tours

In my post “ Must See Virtual Field Trip s,” I included some 360° virtual tours. If you haven’t tried one before, you need to. Previously, I had only done the tours using a computer. When I started checking out the virtual factory tours, I used my phone to take some tours. I seriously feel like an old dog who just learned a new trick. When I turned around, I saw different parts of the factory. Very cool indeed. Make sure to press the pause button during the tours so you can look around.

Factory Tours

Why did I choose factory tours? My family loves to know how things are made. One morning when all 10 of us were at the table, we took turns looking up on You Tube “how things are made.” Of course, I chose chocolate. A note on the 360° tours, most of them are only a few minutes long. You of course have the option to pause and “look” around and explore.

Non-food 360° Tours

I can’t lie, I find the food tours the most interesting. Since not everyone is like me, however, I chose other tours as well.

virtual factory tours

1. Amazon – A lady with a lovely accent is your guide on this tour of an Amazon wherehouse. It’s an impressive operation.

2. Boeing – On this tour, you will explore Boeing’s factory in Renton, Washington. They make their 737 plane here. Would you believe it takes 12,000 workers to make 47 planes in a month?

3. Toyota – Here you will see workers making Toyota forklifts. This factory is located in Ancenis, France. Parts of this tour go by really quickly, so if you want to explore more, pause and move around.

4. Tesla – The editor-in-chief of Roadshow, Tim Stevens, is the tour guide for Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California.

5. M factory – Walmart produced this video to show viewers how the M factory makes eyeglasses in Brooklyn, New York. There is no narrator for this tour, but pop-ups along the way explain the process.

6. Standard Textile Center for Advanced Manufacturing – This plant provides made in the USA products for Marriot Hotels. The narrator will take you through the process of making terry cloth towels at their factory.

7. Gotham Greens Urban Rooftop Garden – The CEO of Gotham Greens takes you behind the scenes at their rooftop garden in Brooklyn, New York. They grow all kinds of leafy greens in their facility.

Food 360° Factory Tours

Now it’s on to the food! The Food Network has a number of videos that are more “how it’s made” than factory tours. Those videos are from the network’s “Unwrapped” series. The first tour is not a Food Network tour, but one I have personally been on as it’s close to home.

8. The Jelly Belly Factory – Did you know Ronald Reagan was a huge jelly bean fan? At the factory, there is a huge portrait of Reagan made of jelly beans. This facility is located in Fairfield, California.

9. Ample Hills Creamery – Brian Smith, the co-founder of Ample Hills Creamery in Brooklyn, New York, shows us how to make “ooey gooey butter cake ice cream.” Is your mouth drooling yet?

10. Smarties Candy Company – Take a quick tour to see how Smarties are made. Over a billion rolls of Smarties are made each year!

11. M & Ms – M & Ms have been made in New Jersey since 1941. And yes, I am playing favorites by embedding this video. After all, it involves chocolate.

12. Peeps – Peeps are made in Pennsylvania. 5.5 million Peeps are made every day! Peeps are polarizing. There is a Facebook group dedicated to disliking Peeps. I think Peeps are great for science experiments.

13. New York City Pizzerias – This is a quick compilation of three pizzerias making New York style pizza. I liked that I could pause and look up at the people who were making the pizzas.

14. Pez – Visit the Pez factory in Connecticut. Watch how they make the six different flavored candies that go in the fun dispensers. Do you have a favorite dispenser?

In a class by itself

15. Lego factory – Time to geek out Lego fans! This is a tour of the Lego factory in Denmark. Here is a crazy statistic: the factory makes 1,350 Lego pieces every second!

Have fun exploring these super fun 360° virtual factory tours!

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
