Steve Coogan and Rob Bryden in The Trip To Greece.

The Trip to Greece review – Coogan and Brydon have the Midas touch

The comics’ semi-fictionalised food tour ends in the Med, as they deepen the moving pathos behind their celebrity impressions and endless bickering

S cheduling The Trip to Greece (Sky One) to appear during the last dregs of a miserable, wet British winter is either an act of wanton cruelty or an escapist dream, depending on whether you’re feeling unreasonably upbeat or not. It is now 10 years since Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan began their culinary road trips, and, having taken in the Lake District, Italy and Spain, this fourth instalment looks to be the last. During promotion for the fourth series of the show, Coogan pointed out that even the jokes about The Trip becoming repetitive are in danger of becoming repetitive.

If it is the last series, then it is bowing out with dignity and sticking to what it knows best, rather than setting fire to its legacy and sending Brydon and Coogan off on an 18-30 all-inclusive at the Ibiza Rocks hotel, though honestly, I would watch that, too. This time, the pair have been “commissioned by the Observer” to retrace the steps of Odysseus, so The Trip to Greece begins in Turkey, with Coogan doing a Partridge “A-ha!” in a Trojan horse. Fans of the series will know that is pretty much the extent of it. They eat delicious-looking food, spar with one another, and there’s some serious location envy.

These cartoonish versions of Brydon (self-described as a “popular light entertainer”, jovial and family-centred) and Coogan (who settles for “troubled TV funnyman”, and is all dissatisfied ego) are familiar as they bicker and do impressions over dinner, and it conveys sufficient intimacy that it feels like dropping in on old friends. The series begins with a double-bill, and in this first episode, jokes about Aristotle’s Poetics are jumbled in with a Wales v Manchester debate and a “watery custard” dessert that looks a lot like something else. The pair discuss the nature of imitation and whether playing a real person could be considered an impression (there is some lovely meta fun to be had in the fact that they are doing imitations of themselves) before delivering impressions of Tom Hardy, Stan Laurel, Ronnie Corbett and John Hurt in The Elephant Man.

For the most part, the banter takes the lead: Brydon reveals he once lost a part to Ray Winstone, and there is an extended riff on a cockney Henry VIII that it tickles me to recall, as does Brydon’s reaction to an overly vigorous male masseur, an over-the-top response not seen since Monica allowed Phoebe to give her a massage in Friends. The pair stop off at the village where Mamma Mia! was filmed, which impresses a wide-eyed Brydon as much as it bores a cynical Coogan.

For all of its familiar warmth, though, it is sharp enough to cut through the holiday haze. Brydon asks Coogan what he is most proud of. Brydon says he is most proud of his children. For Coogan, also a father, it is his seven Baftas. There are plenty of knowing references to Coogan’s tabloid image, and a sad/funny point about the younger women he dates not sharing the same memories or references. The two run into a man who works with refugees on Lesbos, who knows Coogan from a film they made together, and they drop him off in their extravagant gifted car, on the way to their next luxurious meal. By episode two, real life, or the scripted version of it, has begun to intrude, as the hint of a plot drops in, and Coogan finds out his father is ill again.

Though only half an hour each, the episodes feel oddly timeless; you could have been watching for 10 minutes, or three hours. Partly, that is Michael Winterbottom’s direction – unhurried, soothing and deeply satisfying. Whether you are watching them singing on a ferry, or picking up on Brydon’s sly delight that exclamations of “A-ha!” follow Coogan everywhere he goes, you are simply right there in it, happily going along for the ride.

There are few better people through whom to enjoy a vicarious holiday. The food looks so good that you can almost imagine the taste of it, and if Secret Cinema can put on an interactive Stranger Things event, then perhaps they might consider trying The Trip, too, where you get to eat incredible food against beautiful backdrops, stay in gorgeous hotels and listen to two funny men gently needling each other for a few hours. There’s the odd moment of over-familiarity – a joke about a Bafta preview DVD felt a little industry-smug – but if this is to be the last of The Trips, then it is a beautiful note to end on.

Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan have taken themselves off to Greece for their latest series of The Trip, so expect plenty of moussaka and feta and bickering as the two comedians eat their way around the Greek islands.

"Succulently seasoned with laughter, impressions and scintillating conversation, The Trip to Greece is sure to satisfy viewers’ palettes as the duo lock horns over tragedy, comedy, myth and history," Sky One promises.

Here's what you need to know...

When is The Trip to Greece on TV?

The Trip to Greece will be broadcast from Tuesday 3rd March at 10pm on Sky One and NOW TV .

In June 2019 Rob Brydon revealed that filming had officially begun on the six 30-minute episodes, sharing this photo:

The show was announced in January 2019. In May, Brydon tweeted this photo of himself and Steve Coogan making plans for the show over a nice lunch:

What is The Trip to Greece about?

The Trip is a British TV sitcom series which began in 2010, starring comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as fictionalised versions of themselves on a restaurant tour of northern England.

Co-created by Brydon and Coogan themselves and directed by Michael Winterbottom, it was well-received by viewers and critics alike, and was later edited into a feature film.

After the success of The Trip, the two men decided to take their show on the road – launching a second series and feature film, The Trip to Italy (2014), and a third series and feature film, The Trip to Spain (2017).

They also made the leap from BBC Two to Sky Atlantic .

Sky’s Head of Comedy Jon Mountague says: "What a joy to go island hopping with the incomparable Steve and Rob. Greece is the birthplace of democracy but more importantly the birthplace of Michael Winterbottom’s latest vision, which we can’t wait to share with our customers. Yamas!"

  • Brassic renewed for season 3 by Sky One before the second has aired

Is there a Trip to Greece trailer?

Not yet, but keep this page bookmarked and we'll bring you a teaser for The Trip to Greece as soon as one materialises...

Will there be a Trip to Greece film?

Like 2010's The Trip and its two sequels, 2014's The Trip to Italy and 2016's The Trip to Spain, will both air as a six-part series and be re-edited into a single feature film.

The film version of The Trip to Greece has been acquired for US distribution by IFC Films (who also released the three previous outings) and is expected to make its cinema debut in summer 2020.

“We have traveled all over Europe with Steve, Rob, and Michael in what is the most successful and tasty independent franchise and we can’t wait to present US audiences with the latest trip to Greece,” said Arianna Bocco, EVP of acquisitions and productions of IFC Films.

  • This Time with Alan Partridge series 2 is confirmed by Steve Coogan

Where is The Trip to Greece filmed?

The Trip to Greece

The fourth series, The Trip to Greece, is set to follow the same format as the previous series as Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan eat their way around the Greek islands.

The duo will be sampling the culinary delights of Assos, Kavala, Stagira, Athens, Epidaurus, Hydra and Plyos – and many other "beautiful Greek hot spots".

Why is The Trip ending?

Coogan, Brydon and Winterbottom confirmed at a press launch for The Trip to Greece in February 2020 that their fourth outing together would be their last .

"I was going to say quit while you're ahead but if that was the case we would have quit with [series] three," Coogan quipped.

"But quit while you're not far behind. Jump before you're pushed. We made a joke about being repetitive in this one but I think making jokes about being repetitive about being repetitive gets a bit thin.

"I'm sure Rob's still got a few years left in him so we'll see a few interesting things. I'll still work with Michael... and I'll still go for lunch with Rob."

Every fancy restaurant and hotel in The Trip To Greece

By Anna Conrad

Image may contain Steve Coogan Human Person Rob Brydon Food and Meal

It’s hard to believe that it’s been three years since we last heard the comically nasal Michael Caine callings (and the fabulously high-pitched purrings of Mick Jagger) from Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as they competitively squawked over the top of one another, like two jousting birds, at sunlit European tables.

The Trip To Spain , thought to be the last of The Trip saga, left on unsettling terms, with Coogan stranded in North Africa approached by a man in a balaclava yelling “Allahu Akbar” . Thankfully, this hasn’t spelled the end of Coogan, as the double act return for what they’re officially calling their final series, which takes place in Greece.

Fittingly, they follow Homer’s Odyssey , but opt for luxury hotels and picture-perfect costal views, rather than ten years of war and slaughter. So as you watch along, bookmark these places as beautiful hotspots to bicker in.

Episode one: Troy, Assos, Kavala

The series starts in the site of ancient Troy in western Turkey. After visiting the ruins, Coogan and Brydon have lunch at the Adatepe Ida Blue Hotel, a five-star hotel with lush views of Mount Ida. Adatepe Ida Blue Hotel. idablue.com.tr

They then visit the Temple Of Athena in Assos before travelling on a private boat from Assos to Lesvos. In Lesvos they visit the Moria refugee camp and then travel overnight on the Blue Star Ferry from Lesvos to Kavala on the northern mainland of Greece.

Episode two: Kavala, Pelion, Pinakates

The pair have breakfast at the five-star Imaret Hotel in Kavala, known for its late Ottoman architecture. Imaret Hotel in Kavala. imaret.gr

After, they stay up in the hills at the five-star Sakali Mansion in Pinakates, where you’ll see those breathtaking views. Sakali Mansion. sakalihotel.gr

Episode three: Piraeus and Athens

After breakfast at Sakali Mansion, they then drive to visit Ancient Delphi. Lunch takes place at Varoulko Seaside in Piraeus, which won its first Michelin star in 2002 (the first one ever awarded to a restaurant serving Greek food in Greece). Varoulko Seaside. varoulko.gr

Kylie Jenner Asks Plane to Turn Around Minutes Before Takeoff Due to Anxiety

On the latest episode of 'The Kardashians,' Kylie says she has a "bad feeling" about the trip and gets off the plane, much to the annoyance of her sisters

  • On the new episode of The Kardashians , the family heads to Aspen for a getaway, but bad weather prompts a change to their flight plans
  • The “series of events” causes Kylie Jenner to say she has anxiety about continuing to go on the trip and that she has a “bad feeling” about flying
  • Kylie departs the plane — and Kendall Jenner says this behavior is a “pattern” for Kylie

Kylie Jenner ’s anxiety caused her to pull out of family trip at the very last minute.

On the new episode of The Kardashians , Kylie joins sisters Khloé Kardashian and Kim Kardashian — who are in the midst of a fight — as well as Kendall Jenner and mom Kris Jenner , on a private plane headed to the Colorado mountain resort town of Aspen. Meanwhile, Kourtney Kardashian Barker stayed behind with her son Rocky , born in November.

At first, Kylie, 26, shares in her confessional, “I am very excited. I’ve been wanting to go to Aspen this year. I try to snowboard at least once a year. And I’m just feeling blessed to be around family.”

However, once they are all on the plane, the pilot announces that they’re delayed due to weather and low visibility — a delay which keeps them sitting and scrolling on their phones for 48 minutes.

When the pilot says he can fly into Grand Junction — a three-hour drive from Aspen — Kylie says, “I don’t think that’s safe. I don’t like to drive in the snow.”

The Hollywood Curtain/Bauer-Griffin/GC

Kylie says that “there were three crashes” involving people she knows who drove in the snow. But as she's talking, Kendall and Kim’s expressions turn sour.

“Kylie’s anxiety is kicking in, and I totally understand,” Kris, 68, says.

“I’m here, I’m ready, I’m packed, I’m ready to go,” Kylie says, but insists “I’m not going to Grand Junction.”

The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now!

About a half hour later, the pilot says “I think the best bet is, let me launch to Grand Junction, let me see what that weather’s looking like,” sharing that he can check in on the weather while en route.

While he’s speaking, Kylie sits stone-faced.

“Are you positive we can land in Grand Junction?” Kris asks.

“Oh, 100 percent,” he replies, prompting Kris to say, “Well then, let’s just go.”

In another confessional, Kylie insists, “I’m really good with flying....I wasn’t in the past.”

And while Kylie adds “I’ve gotten much better,” she shares, “I’m having a lot of anxiety.”

Back on the plane, Kylie tells her sisters “I’ve been having a really bad feeling for the last two days.”

“Why would you say that?” her sisters retort.

“I couldn’t even sleep last night,” she continues, as an exasperated Kendall, 26, tells her, “The fact that you even put that out into the universe is one of the weirdest things."

Meanwhile, Khloé, 40, observes their interaction with her arms folded.

“You're not supposed to speak it into existence,” Kendall continues.

Back in her confessional, Kylie says, “I’m just not comfortable right now." The mom to son Aire , 2, and daughter Stormi , 6, whom she shares with Travis Scott , says, “I’m thinking about my kids."

And while she admits "I'm maybe dramatic," Kylie adds, "I feel like something isn’t safe.”

Back on the plane, the sisters all share incredulous expressions as an increasingly distraught Kylie tells Kris, “I just had a bad feeling for the past two days. I don’t like the series of events. I feel like I have to go. I think I’m going to get off.”

As the plane starts moving, Khloé says that someone needs to tell the pilot to turn the plane around so Kylie can get off.

“The minute Kylie says, 'Turn the plane around, I want to get off,' I know she’s serious," Kris explains. "I know the anxiety is overwhelming, and I don’t think anything is going to change her mind because now she’s really worried.”

As Kris informs the flight team that they need to turn around to let Kylie off, she repeats ,“I’m just having a lot of anxiety.”

But in a confessional, Kendall says, “I know Kylie since the day she was born. And I’m not discrediting her panic. I don’t know why she does this. But it’s also a part of a pattern for her. She’s done this many, many, many times.”

As Kylie hugs Kris and departs the plane, Kendall’s voiceover continues.

“I think she just thinks she can get away with whatever.”

And once Kylie is off the plane and on her way home, Kim shares her opinion of the encounter.

“It’s always like this. It’s always f—ing like this,” Kim, 43, says.

Kendall agrees, saying, “The fact that she always gets out of this s—t is very f—ing annoying.”

Kris was more measured in her response, saying, “I know the other girls are frustrated, but it’s one of my babies. Of course I’m going to understand and not get mad at her. I don’t want her to feel anxious.”

Kris calls Kylie to prompt her to come back, asking Kendall to talk to her.

However, Kendall throws up her hands, saying, “I’m the wrong one.”

Khloé chimes in, saying, “Why don’t you just hang up the phone. She’s not getting on. And let’s just move on.”

The conversation turns to the girls deciding they will split the contents of Kylie's luggage, with Khloé calling out, “I hope you brought cute s—t!”

New episodes of The Kardashians drop Thursdays at 12 a.m. ET on Hulu.

In Greece, Another Tourist Found Dead Amid Scorching Heat Wave

At least 10 foreign tourists have gone missing or been found dead this year in Greece after going for a hike, often in scorching temperatures.

Reporting from Athens

Greek authorities said on Monday that the body of a missing German man was recovered near a gorge on the island of Crete, the latest in a series of fatal incidents involving tourists undertaking demanding hikes in the scorching heat.

At least 10 tourists have gone missing or been found dead this year in similar circumstances, according to Greek authorities. The country has experienced back-to-back heat waves earlier than usual this year, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) in many areas for several days in a row.

The 67-year-old man’s body was found in “rugged and inaccessible terrain” near the Tripiti Gorge in southwestern Crete, the fire service said in a statement. It was first spotted by a drone on Sunday evening. Early Monday, the fire service sent a helicopter, though it took responders several hours to reach the body.

As of Monday, the man’s name and cause of death had not been released.

According to Constantina Dimoglidou, a police spokeswoman, the man had contacted his wife early Sunday afternoon, saying he had run out of water and felt ill. He did not know his location, but the authorities traced his cellphone signal.

The Tripiti Gorge is a demanding trek generally undertaken by experienced hikers, Ms. Dimoglidou said.

Monday’s discovery was the most recent in a string of tourist deaths in the past month.

An 80-year-old Belgian man, a Dutch man and a Frenchwoman, both 70, all died while on separate hiking trips on the island of Crete.

Another Dutch hiker, 74, was found dead on the Greek island of Samos.

On June 9, the remains of a well-known British medical journalist and documentary maker named Michael Mosley were found on the island of Symi, following his disappearance during a walk in extreme heat.

At least three more tourists are still missing after going on hikes, including Albert Calibet, a 59-year-old dual national of the United States and France who has been missing on the Aegean island of Amorgos since June 11. Authorities are still looking for two Frenchwomen, aged 73 and 64, who disappeared on June 14 on the island of Sikinos.

Any hopes of rescuing the missing hikers after so many days are ebbing, Ms. Dimoglidou said, while the prospect of even locating their remains becomes increasingly uncertain with each passing day as decomposition accelerates in the intense heat.

Hikers going astray is not a new thing, but they don’t often turn up dead in ravines, she added. “This year, it seems that more people became disoriented in the intense heat,” the police spokeswoman said.

On days when extreme heat is forecast, Greek authorities generally issue warnings to older citizens and those with health issues to stay indoors. Those are guidelines, however, and there are typically no bans on hiking or on entrance to historic sites.

However, because of the extreme heat, Greek authorities closed many schools in Athens earlier this month and restricted visiting hours to several ancient sites, including the Acropolis.

The search for missing hikers is occurring as the Greek fire service also scrambles to douse wildfires in several parts of the country. Days of sweltering temperatures, dried-out brush and strong winds have created tinder box conditions, fueling fires on the Greek islands and the mainland.

The pga tour makes the trip to the motor city as players jostle for playoff positioning.

Full-field events will be the name of the game for the rest of the PGA Tour season, with the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic taking center stage this week at Detroit Golf Club. Visiting the Donald Ross design for the sixth time, players will look to embark on a sizzling summer stretch as the FedEx Cup Playoffs stand just six tournaments away.

Someone in need of a strong finish to his regular season is the man who raised the trophy last year, Rickie Fowler. The defending champion enters the week 91st in the FedEx Cup standings and in serious jeopardy of not only missing out on qualifying for next year's signature events, but the playoffs entirely. With only two top 20s to his name in 2024 — including one at last week's Travelers Championship — Fowler will need to find something in his game, and fast.

A couple of players who have found something in their games are youngsters Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia. The pair of 22-years-old are putting their energy levels to the test having not taken a week off in two months. Both Kim and Bhatia were featured in the final group in the final round in Cromwell, Connecticut, and will look to keep the momentum rolling in Detroit.

Cameron Young may have founds his form at TPC River Highlands as well with a historic 59 on Saturday that propelled him inside the top 10 by week's end. A runner-up finisher at this course before, the former PGA Tour Rookie of the Year still searches for his first career victory.

His fellow Demon Deacon, Will Zalatoris, is without a top-40 finish since the Masters in early April and aims to discover his early season quality, while Min Woo Lee, Alex Noren, Taylor Pendrith, Stephan Jaeger and Keith Mitchell round out the action.
