Trekking the Inca Trail  is the classic Peru experience. Culminating in Machu Picchu, designated one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this challenging route twists and turns through the Andes Mountain Range, passing rushing rivers, crumbling Inca ruins and cloud forests wreathed in mist. Our four-day fully supported trek includes navigating the Inca Trail, staying at campsites away from the crowds, as well as Machu Picchu; one of the best views of the trip is getting your first glimpse of the glorious Inca ruins as you arrive at the Sun Gate on foot. Machu Picchu

Perhaps the most famous of Peru’s top sights, Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Set high in the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 2,430 metres, it is believed to have been built by the Inca in the 15 th  century and later abandoned, though its original use still remains a mystery. You’ll certainly recognise the labyrinth of dry-stone walls clinging to the grassy plateau and terraced steps leading down to the Urubamba River. Whether choosing a  classic Peru trip  taking in the ancient citadel, a  walking and trekking holiday to Peru , or combining your trip with  the Galapagos Islands , you’ll find that Machu Picchu features highly on all of our group tours to Peru.

Peru’s striated mountains are high up on many people’s must-see sights in Peru, but this in turn attracts the crowds. Escape the bus tours with a trip to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain – the antidote to the photographers' paradise of Vinicuna – where its striped flanks are dappled in shades of grey-green, pale gold and rich umber. Colca Canyon

One of the world’s deepest canyons, Colca Canyon is also one of the best places in Peru to spot rare Andean Condors. If the conditions are right, you can stand at the canyon rim and view these magnificent birds soaring on the thermals from miradors such as Cruz del Condor. The birds often swoop low over onlookers’ heads, adding to the excitement provided by the spectacular 1200 metre drop to the river below. Cusco was the former capital of the Inca empire, and marries both archaeological ruins and elegant Spanish colonial architecture – the latter best seen in Plaza de Armas, the old city’s colonnaded central square. Peruvian cuisine has seen somewhat of an explosion in recent years, and Cusco has its fair share of recommended restaurants where you can enjoy delicious Peruvian dishes like ceviche or tacu tacu – like Peruvian bubble and squeak. Best time to go to Peru

The dry season from May to September is the most popular time to hike the Inca Trail and visit the wonder of Machu Picchu . The hottest months of June and August are the busiest, whereas in September and October the temperatures are pleasantly warm without being too hot, and the trails are quieter.  Amazon Rainforest If you plan to extend your Peru tour with a wildlife-spotting trip along the tropical Amazon River , book a trip in September, October or November for the best experience. Located in an 18th-century vice-royal building in Lima, the Larco Museum houses an excellent collection of pre-Columbian artefacts. Top 5 airlines flying to Peru

The flight was delayed for 2 hrs. Because they didn’t have a crew to fly. And it is not a first time for klm to do that. Last time they cancelled my filght and rebooked me 3 days later. Not reliable airline

Booked connecting flights with KlM. My serving flight was the furthest part of the airport. On arrival in Zurich. My two cases arrived but only one carry on belong to my son. His three suitcase didn't arrive. After enquiring we discovered they were still in Amsterdam. We landed at 11.12. We eventually left the airport just after one.

The food was ok. The crew seemed like they were cranky. I had one guy get mad at me for passing in between the storage area to get to the other toilet. I can understand if it's not allowed but reprimanding me like I'm a student saying "This is the last time!" was not appropriate. During my meal time, there was a French family around me. No problems there but when we usually have meals, they are supposed to put their chair in the upright position. These people did not do it and the steward did not tell them to raise their seat in the upright position. However, I was told to do so! So, me and another person next to me had to eat with the monitor almost touching our faces. Furthermore, a lady in front of me was putting her feet up and preventing another elder passenger from putting her seat back. To make it worse, she was continuously hitting her back into her seat, shaking my monitor while I was watching a movie. A crew member did speak to her about it but then she accused me of pushing her seat forward! The crew member gave me a death stare and told me to stop pushing the seat forward. I did not even touch her seat at all, if I did, she would know it. Her boyfriend also stood up and tried to push her seat even further past the maximum decline to no avail. None of these people were reprimanded but the steward, some bald guy, was extremely friendly with them and did not even try to instruct them to do anything until it was time to land. I resisted the urge to really argue with them because I would have obviously been seen as the aggressor (I have no idea why). I hardly said anything on this flight except "more wine please" and "sorry" if I bumped into someone accidentally. Overall, it was an annoying flight and I had to resist the urge to yell at the steward and the people he was overly friendly with. The happiest moment of this flight was leaving it.

I travel frequently. The flight was late again... KLM should really try and be on time

The flight itself it was great nice food the crew were very nice and helpful, Checking in from Birmingham wasn't great long queues for bag dropped, And I had my hand luggage case taken away from me even though I requested to have it with me as I had breakables items. I was told I can not because of the length of the flight with no explanation at all no options was given for me to take my fragile items out of my case it was taken away with hold buggage I find the staff member who was checking me in very unpleasant !! Can we please be advise if the rules have changed about the the carry on hand luggage it will be easier to be advise on booking your tickect if we not allowed to take the hand luggage with me. Overall I had a good flight .

I requested wheel chair assistance , it was confirmed via email that inwoood get it but I didn’t get it . The last leg of my trip to Nigeria was the worst.

One of their staff was so rude with discriminative. Such a reputed airline shouldn't hire such kind of arrogant attendants.

Amazing KLM service and brilliant economy comfort seats. Well worth the extra.

The boarding was one of the worst I’ve ever experienced. The fault lays on Ohare Airport and not so much the airline. The waiting area by the gate was the size to accommodate a regional flight for 20-30 people and right next to a busy walkway. When you cramped nearly 300 passengers into that space is was unbearable.

Well, in my case; the flight was delayed 1 hour, we have to wait in the plane to get green light. And the plane (probably because was a short trip) did not have entertainment or WiFi. No a good experience.

Cabin crew on our flight showed lack of any customer service gruff and acting annoyed if you asked anything and I mean anything Example a man on the seat over dropped his beer on my husbands blanket We asked if we could switch out blankets cabin crew Said. No we don’t have any extras OK well can you take the wet one Cabin crew looked disgusted and annoyed Took it no OK or yes just a growl

My ticket was for Premium Economy and all the seats were taken, I was placed in Economy class and I’m looking for a refund.

Unfortunately delayed 2 hrs due to faulty tyre.. which had to be changed, but better safe than sorry.

Staff didn’t check cabin well for landing seemed more interested in chatting to each other. Food was poor and differed from pre order.

We were in the last group to be called to the flight - which was 30 minutes late taking off. While we were lucky enough to have been given bulkhead seats (due to a medical condition I’d told them about beforehand) the seats weren’t particularly comfortable. A crying baby for the whole trip made things worse, so the crew managed very well with coping. The final thing I’d say was that there wasn’t enough food served during the flight.

We flew Upper Class from London to The Turks and Caicos. Check in was amazing. Our ldriver too us directly to a special entrance to terminal 3. It took 10 minutes to check in and clear customs. Amazing! The VA lounge is large and comfortable. Boarding the flight was easy and without a wait. The crew was excellent. But the seats were awful, strange and uncomfortable. Having a comfortable flat bed seat is the reason we pays 1000s extra. The VA 787 uses a reverse herringbone configuration. Look it up. You have your back to the window and are facing the aisle with no privacy. Turning the seat into a bed requires assistance from the crew so not very spontaneous. . The food was ok. A bit tasteless and meager portions. Had to pay for WiFi. I believe VA has other configuration on their dream airbus flights. Lots of stuff about all this on YouTube where you can see what I have been describing. I can not recommend taking VA on a long flight with these seats.

As usual, LATAM tried to rip me off as a Gringo. They ignored the fact that having paid for my assigned seats, I was entitled to one free luggage per person, up to 10kg, and tried to charge me USD40 per item. While they ripped me off by $160 on my outbound flight (4 luggage pieces, which should have been free), I vehemently protested this time around. Note that they only request this from gringos, not from Spanish speakers. LATAM behaves like a racist extortion organization.

This airline is full of junk fees. After paying to get my kids to sit with me, we were asked at the gate to check in our roller bags and pay $40 for each one. Peruvian passengers all took their roller bag in the plane. I don’t appreciate airlines who spot the gringos to tax them more.

Service and food are good. However, main cabin with the extra cost one pays could be better. I don't see any difference with the rest of the seats in the regular category. The seats are too close to the ones in front. For short flights it is Ok, but for long ones there should be more space.

Fast check in, easy to navigate, crew were very good, the plane was delayed due to a previous flight and I found the cleanliness a little lacking but overall it was fine

I would not fly with BA again. Packed in like sardines, constant request to turn down air conditioning due to freezing cold for hours and the food was pretty to look at but tasteless!

Appalling! The flight was delayed by 3.5 hours and the American Airlines staff at the airport where nit very helpful. Once boarded, the flight crew were unhelpful, the food was poor and the aircraft was tatty.

Overall not great . We had a 4 four hour plus delay on returning and communication about the changes was poor . No updates were given on the website or by e-mail . We subsequently missed a connection , were our on a later flight and then missed all public transport for our onward journey home. Needed to hire a car at some expense . One member if staff was rude at the gate

I needed assistance and the staff at the airport and crew were very helpful and polite

I liked that the seat belt fit so I did not have to ask for an extension.

We paid to have overhead carry-on baggage. When we got to the gate we were told that our carry on bags would need to be checked and go below because the flight was full. Notably we were nowhere near the last people to board and about 30 other passengers also had to check their carry-on bags. Other than that the flight was fine.

Very bad plain although I paid A business class ticket I was stuck in a stiff fixed seat without any entertainment or Wi Fi for 5 hours I will never ever book a flight on British airline.

Self check in Kiosk did not recognize that I had prepaid for my luggage. This caused a 40 minute delay even though I had my British Airways email receipt for the prepaid luggage.

Crew were very friendly and helpful. They explained to us in detail the delay in our takeoff due to the storm that rolled in from Belfast and did their best to make up the time. Always great to fly BA!

The crew on board were all very pleasant and happy to help. The flight had the old business class seats. The departure board in the business lounge did not update and kept on saying ' gate open' but never said boarding. When I got nervous about the departure time and walked to the gate I was told off rudely for being late.

Offered vegetable curry when it was actually tofu which I don’t care for.

Petty crimes are a widespread problem in Peru, which is why we recommend to keep vigilant of your belongings and to stay in the cities’ touristy areas where the affluence of travelers is larger and national security is more compliant. Pick-pocketing and robberies are very common, be aware among crowds since thieves might create distractions to target you. However, we don’t mean to scare you off by pointing this out, but to show you the reality ahead when traveling abroad. That doesn’t mean that it could happen to you or that you’re traveling to a highly unsafe country, on the contrary, these are just precautions. In case of any inconvenience, there are government agencies specialized in tourism willing to assist you with any eventuality, such as the Tourist Police. The Tourist Police or Policía de Turismo in Spanish, is another wing of national security which provides assistance to foreign travelers, though it’s more likely to find them in larger cities rather than the most rural and remote areas of the country. However, the British Embassy in Lima also offers assistance and guidance for crime victims. Remember to fill your report with local police and then contact your embassy if necessary. Local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

Best Way to Fly to Peru from UK

The easiest way to get to Peru from the UK is by international flight, fares can range from £750 to £1200. Currently, British Airways is the only airline offering direct flights from London to Peru. However, most flights have connections in Europe and America. There are many airlines that fly to Peru, among the most popular are: KLM, Iberia, Continental airlines, and Lufthansa. They all have connections with the Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima . The total flight duration from the UK to Peru is 12 hours, 35 minutes, but it varies according to the stop times and routes. It is worth noting that there are 4 more international airports in Peru, though they have limited flight departures per week and for certain cities within South America. Therefore, Lima remains as the starting point for most travelers that wish to come to our country. According to national airports, there are 26 cities that offer domestic flights services including the aforementioned international airports. The most popular are in Cusco, Arequipa, Juliaca, Iquitos, Jaén, Huaraz, and Piura.

Peru Entry Requirements for British Citizens

Throughout all our years of service, we’ve come across the same question: Do I need a visa to visit Peru from the UK? The answer is no, a tourist visa is not among the entry requirements for citizens of the United Kingdom. However, what the immigration office does require is having at least a 6 month validity remaining in your passport along with two empty pages for the entry/exit stamp. According to the UK Government, evidence of return or onward travel is required by some airlines. Keep in mind that the length of your stay in Peru will be determined by the immigration officer upon entry and they may give you permission to stay up to 90 days. However, if you’re planning to stay longer than your stipulated time, you must request an extension through the Peruvian immigration office. If you overstay, some penalties will be applied. Important Note: Due to the Coronavirus outbreak many countries have been forced to implement new safety protocols and requirements to ensure public health within their territories. Traveling to Peru with kids? Here’s what you should know...

- Children traveling with both parents are only required to have a valid passport. - Procedures are more complex when a child is traveling with one parent. However, no extra documentation is required if entering Peru as a tourist for less than 183 days. - For children planning to stay longer than 183 days a Permiso Notarial de Viaje will be requested upon exit. - For British children with residence status in Peru a written permission is required, signed by the non accompanying parent(s) to leave the country.

Local Currency in Peru

The local currency in Peru is called “Nuevo Soles.” Banknotes come in denominations of 200, 100, 50, 20, and 10. Whilst coins come in 5, 2, 1, 0.50, 0.20, and 0.10 units. It is worth mentioning that counterfeit money is a current problem in Peru, which is why we highly recommend to double-check the change you receive at all times. Likewise, the 200 and 100 bills are hardly accepted. Therefore, it is preferable to carry small denomination bills during your trip. Unlike Pound Sterling, US Dollars are widely accepted in large establishments as shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, and others. However, don’t expect to pay with US dollars in small shops. We highly recommend exchanging your Pounds in Lima or Cusco, though this could be difficult since not all money exchange houses deal with this currency. Transport Options in Peru

If you’re wondering how to get around through South America’s 3rd-largest country, don’t worry, we got you covered! According to your needs, time, and the destinations you’d like to visit, there are different transport options.

1. Bus Travel For those looking for a unique experience through Peruvian lands, we highly recommend taking bus trips to the different attractions within your itinerary. However, it is worth mentioning that travel time and distance may be really long due to the extension of the country. Therefore, if you’re not willing to commit to +10 hour bus rides then this is not the option for you. We’d like to highlight that bus travel is the cheapest alternative to get around Peru, even if you’re traveling with the most luxurious services. Also, traveling by bus is considered a more enriching travel experience for many travelers that visit our authentic country. According to time-wise efficiency, bus rides through the coastal highway are faster than through the most mountainous routes. Bus conditions may vary according to the popularity of the destination, where the most battered buses are used on rural local routes. 2. Flights in Peru If you’re on a tight schedule, then we recommend you take a domestic flight to the main destination within your itinerary. That way, you’ll have more time to enjoy the attractions you’d like to visit. It is worth mentioning that plane tickets are significantly more expensive than any other transport option in Peru, especially during the high tourist season. However, if we talk about time efficiency, a flight from Lima to Cusco will take about 1.5 hours, whilst a direct bus ride could take up to 22 hours. There are different airlines that offer internal flights in Peru, among the most popular are: LATAM, VivaAir, Avianca, and Star Peru. 3. Train Travel For those who didn’t know, train travel is possible in Peru. However, the rail routes are limited to the main attractions of the Peruvian Andes, where the famous Belmond Andean Explorer connects Arequipa, Puno, and Cusco. This transport option is considered one of the most luxurious alternatives to travel around the country, though speed-wise it is significantly slower than train rides in Europe. However, the weather in our country varies according to its regions since Peru’s geographical features influence the climate conditions of the coast, mountains, and jungle. For example, the Andean region is marked by two stationary seasons, a dry winter and a rainy summer. On the other hand, the coast has predominant arid weather, being Lima the exception though rain chances are nearly nill in this region. However, the jungle is characterized for having rainy tropical weather, being the rainiest months between January and April. Yes, we are aware that planning a trip through Peru according to its weather conditions is quite confusing but one thing is certain, no matter during what time of the year you decide to come, Peru will always provide a great experience. Most tourists prefer to travel during the “Dry Season,” which takes place between May and October. Dealing with Altitude Sickness Most of Peru’s main attractions are located over 2,500 meters above sea level, which is why some tourists (to not say all of them) tend to experience dizziness, tiredness, headaches, and shortness of breath, these are the effects of Altitude Sickness. This condition can cause mild to severe reactions and could be highly dangerous if left untreated. Even if you’ve lived above 3,000 meters or at sea level throughout your whole life, altitude sickness can affect you anytime. However, we don’t mean to scare you off but to make things clear and easy for you:

- Keep yourself hydrated. - Avoid alcohol and smoking. - Don’t commit to physically demanding activities in the first 2-3 days. - Eat a light but high-calorie diet. - Drink Coca tea or chew Coca leaves.

Likewise, there are some medicines that help with altitude sickness like Diamox or Soroche Pills, which you can find in almost any drugstore in Peru. But, we do encourage you to find professional medical advice before taking any of these. 2. Learn a few Spanish words and phrases We want to clarify that it is not necessary to know Spanish to visit Peru. Foreign tourism is our country’s main economic asset, which means that you won’t have any trouble finding someone who can speak or understand English. However, it doesn’t mean that all Peruvians are English speakers. Therefore, we recommend you to know a few Spanish words and phrases that will surely help you get by when ordering food, asking for directions, or even getting a taxi ride. 3. Get a travel insurance Most travelers think that travel insurance only covers medical issues abroad, but this is wrong. We highly recommend getting travel insurance for the following reasons: Coverage of trip cancellations, stolen documents or credit cards, baggage delay or loss, medical repatriation, and more according to your needs. 4. What language do the people of peru speak.

The official language of Peru is Spanish, with over 85% of the country speaking it. There are multiple variants depending on where you travel, for example the coastal region speaks Peruvian Coastal Spanish, while locals in and around the Andes tend to speak Andean Spanish. As these dialects can vary greatly from standard Spanish, it’s advised you bring a phrasebook to assist your communications when visiting less tourist-orientated places.

What currency do I need in Peru?

Rather fittingly, the official currency of the Kingdom of the Sun is the sol, which translates to ‘sun’ in Spanish. Credit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are in abundance across larger towns and in city centres.

What’s the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

Undoubtedly, the first image that springs to mind when thinking about Peru is Machu Picchu – Peru is known the world over for its Incan descendants and the plethora of ruins they left behind. The best time to visit the iconic ruins is between April and October – while the warm season here tends to run from October through March, it’s worth remembering that this also corresponds with the rainy weather. This historic landmark is at its busiest from June to August, and there is a 500 person limit imposed daily.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Peru set and enforce entry rules. If you are not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Peruvian Consulate General in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Peru.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Peru, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa to travel to Peru for tourism or short visits. If you are travelling for any other reason, check requirements with the Peruvian Consulate General in the UK .

You are normally given permission to stay for up to 30 days when you arrive. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for permission on arrival. Immigration officials can grant you up to 180 days a year as a visitor or tourist.

If you overstay, you will need to pay a fine or you could be detained.

Arriving at an international airport

If you arrive in Peru at an international airport your entry will be registered digitally through a Tarjeta Andina de Migración (TAM) - a virtual immigration control document.

You can check the number of days you have been granted to stay legally in Peru on the Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones website (in Spanish).

Arriving by land

Land entry: make sure you get your passport stamped.

If you enter Peru overland from any neighbouring country, go to the immigration checkpoint and get your passport stamped. If you do not get an entry stamp, you will not be allowed to leave Peru until you get a new entry stamp. If you do not get one, you will need to:

• complete the online application form (form in Spanish)
• provide your passport details
• provide evidence of your entry to Peru, such as a bus ticket in your name
• show an exit stamp from the last country you visited

The British Embassy can help you to apply for a new entry stamp. You should start this process as soon as possible.

If you cannot provide the information needed, you must apply for an exit order or expulsion order to leave Peru in person at the Immigration Office in Lima . These orders may stop you from re-entering Peru for a number of years. The British Embassy cannot intervene in these decisions, but can help you with the exit procedure.

If your passport has been lost or stolen and you plan to travel internally, contact your travel agency, airline or bus company to check their requirements. Some airlines and bus companies will not allow you to travel internally carrying a police report only. You may need a new passport or an emergency travel document .

Processing at the Peru-Chile border

Clashes between the police and migrants on the border between Peru and Chile in April and early May 2023 have led to delays in processing at this border crossing. See regional risks . 

Vaccine requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Peru guide .

Travelling with children

Children aged 17 and under who are travelling on a British passport and have Peruvian resident status need written permission (‘Autorización de Viaje Notarial’) from the non-accompanying parent or parents to leave Peru.

You must get permission in a letter signed by a public notary in Peru. The letter must include:

• proposed destination
• purpose of the trip
• departure date
• return date

If you’re unable to get notarial permission, you’ll need to get judicial written permission (‘Autorización de Viaje Judicial’) from a judge. If one parent has committed certain crimes, the other can request a judicial written permission. If one parent is deceased, the other will need to submit the death certificate to a notary public, so that an indefinite notarial permit to travel with the child is issued.

These requirements do not normally apply to children with tourist status, but immigration officers may ask for them in circumstances considered suspicious, or if the child has overstayed in Peru.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Peru . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

You can bring one laptop and 2 mobile phones into Peru without paying tax.

When you leave Peru, you may be stopped and prosecuted if you are carrying:

• products made from wild animal skins
• crafts made with preserved butterflies, spiders, starfish, sea horses or other fish or insects
• crafts and jewellery made with condor or other wild bird feathers, turtle shells, teeth, bones and other animal parts

The sale of souvenirs made with wild animal parts, including condor feathers, is illegal in Peru. These products are often sold in tourist markets in Cusco and Iquitos.

You’re not allowed to remove any archaeological artefacts from Peru without authorisation.

They're the ones who will take you to the best vantage points, the most memorable places and the greatest culinary experiences which are often hard to find if you don't know the way. While travelling with your small tour group, you can spend time with your local leader and get the inside scoop on where to check out your travel must-sees. 

While every country can present dangers, Peru is generally a safe travel destination if you are informed and alert but this is also where a group tour comes in handy. You'll have the guidance of your local leader and the company of others while exploring the gems of Peru's cities, towns and rural regions. Your leader can also help you haggle with merchants and provide advice on avoiding pickpocketers and scammers that can often be found around major tourist areas. With safety taken care of, you can simply focus on the fun.

Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to join a solo tour in Peru?

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). 

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling to Peru?

You sure do. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Peru?

Most hotels, large retailers and tourist attractions accept credit cards but will usually charge a fee (about 7%) for using them. Make sure you carry cash for when you're dealing with small vendors, family-run restaurants and market vendors.

Share your itinerary.

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people travelling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check-in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are. 

Remember the little things

If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're travelling with us, we can help you organise an arrival transfer. Read your maps  before  you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewellery, wedding rings and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress like the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.

Roam if you want to

Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost effective. 

Fare's fair

Solo travellers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate  before  you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.

Stick together

It’s one of the advantages of travelling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small Intrepid group of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a day tour to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life. 

Trust your instincts

Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

The best cocktail bars in Washington, DC

A bold collection of speakeasies, rooftop bars and hotel haunts are turning Washington, DC into a mecca for mixologists. With an inventive and unique list of libations, this city is quickly becoming a destination for cocktail connoisseurs.

Come for the Capitol, stay for the cocktails. Washington, DC invented the Gin Rickey, after all, but these days, the US capital is harnessing this heritage with a wave of innovative cocktail bars and meccas of molecular wizardry. From sleek hotel lounges, like The Pembroke, to moody, subterranean speakeasies, like Allegory, there's been lots of new openings and refreshed menus in recent years, with mixologists utilising unusual ingredients like hay-smoked bee larvae and almond blossoms. Here's our selection of the most atmospheric, creative cocktail spots to visit.  

1.   The Wells

Juniper junkies converge on Capitol Hill for this gin-centric cocktail lounge. The intimate bar is backed by a glass menagerie of gin: London dry, citrus-forward Japanese bottles, oak-aged varieties and smooth, small-batch American sips. These are the stars of seasonal cocktails like Let the Beet Drop, a concoction of yoghurt gin, red beet, honey, egg white and lemon. The design is just as spirited: The Wells is swathed in green, while carrot-coloured banquettes edge alcoves, the floor is tiled in honeycomb and a planetary-like light fixture is strung with copper. Pair drinks with elevated snacks like beluga caviar and chips or wagyu skewers with spicy habanada.

Bartender’s choice: The Martini is a staple. The addition of olive oil in the gin allows for the sweetness of olives to play with the botanicals of gin, while Cocchi Americano smooths out the edges. “It’s an olive oil cake, and it’s all grown up,” says lead bartender Alex Pisi.

2.   Allegory

Molecular magic is made at Allegory. You just have to find it first: the sleek speakeasy is hidden behind a black door in the lobby library of progressive hotel Eaton DC. This dimly-lit den spans leather banquettes, a glowing semi-circular bar and moody black pendant lights. A series of magical realist murals by Erik Thor Sandberg line the walls, fusing whimsical Alice in Wonderland themes with the story of civil rights activist Ruby Bridges. The innovative cocktail menu is inspired by the artwork, and bar bites include artisanal cheese plates and crispy pork bánh mì.

Bartender’s choices: Beat of the Drums is Allegory’s version of the classic margarita, blending agave spirits with a Mesoamerican orgeat and fermented huckleberries, then garnished with a piece of huckleberry popcorn. Other inventions, such as the viridescent Garden of Live Flowers (made with gin, rhum agricole, aloe, snap peas, cardomom and coconut black pepper) are also well worth a try.

3.   Silver Lyan

Bring your bucks to this historic former national bank. Its current guise is the grande dame Riggs Washington DC hotel, where the underground cocktail bar is built into an old vault. Silver Lyan’s decor reflects its heritage: brass detailing, stately pillars, oversized art deco lights and plush red velvet. At the helm is award-winning mixologist, Ryan Chetiyawardana (known as Mr Lyan), whose cutting-edge cocktails use unique ingredients, such as tart riberry, arrowroot tea and mulberry soda to name a few.  

Bartender’s choice: Splurge on the Silver Service Martini. Choose one of four different styles of martini, poured into an elegant John Jenkins vintage-style glass. The drink is served with Castelvetrano olives, house-pickled onions, a lemon twist and a freshly shucked oyster. “My personal favourite version is the Ford’s 50:50,” says Vlad Novikov, head of bars for Riggs.

4.   Bresca

With one beaming Michelin star, this Parisian-style bistro on 14th Street may be serious about sustenance, but it’s equally as playful. Inside are pops of perky yellow, booths of deep blue and a living wall swollen with earthy moss. Pull up a pew at the airy bar lined with wooden stools, where Bresca's cocktail menu, Myths & Legends, is a work of art — it whimsically weaves stories with colourful illustrations and innovative seasonal sips.  

Bartender’s choices: In the Circle is a twist on the traditional Manhattan, using culinary techniques to accentuate the vanilla, dark chocolate and spice notes of the D’Ussé Cognac and Michter’s Rye. It’s batched and sous vide with earthy shiitake mushrooms to complement the sweeter local squash cordial. Alternatively, pair a cavier tart with Flora & Fire, a subtle, smoky tipple made with mezcal, cachaca, Aperol, yellow chartreuse and strawberry fuse.

Paint the town red at Off the Record. This iconic basement boozer in The Hay-Adams hotel is dripping in the dramatic: deep rouge crawls from tufted banquettes to the walls and lampshades. A wedding cake ceiling is strung with chandeliers, while caricatures of political figures adorn the walls. Situated on the edge of Lafayette square, to the north of the White House, this bar is a hallowed haunt of savvy locals. Pair its sprawling list of scotches and signature cocktails with bites like lobster rolls, burgers or yellowfin tuna tartare.

Bartender’s choice:   Served in a collins glass, the Lowrider is a refreshing grapefruit cocktail made with Ilegal Mezcal, lime, Aperol, Bittermens Hellfire Habanero Shrub, Fever Tree Pink Grapefruit and Tajín. “This cocktail is a tantalising way for lovers of the Paloma to spice up their game,” suggests bar manager Rachel Sergi.

6.   VUE Rooftop

The glistening crown atop Hotel Washington, this swish 11th-floor rooftop bar boasts fantastic panoramas of the city’s skyline, including views of the White House and stately Washington Monument. The interior is pared-back luxury: dark wood, billowy light fixtures and intimate booths. This is a space that seamlessly stretches from brunch to beats as live DJs play into the night. Soak up the Sazeracs with crispy calamari, lamb burgers or creamy burrata on rustic bread.

Bartender’s choice: Power to the Peaches blends white peach and rosemary Grey Goose Essence, which is complemented by Cointreau, chamomile, honey, lemon and a refreshing Chandon Garden Spritz. Alternatively, try one of the various seasonal cocktails like the Bi-partisan Blend, VUE's take on an espresso martini with horchata and chicory pecan bitters.  

7.   Jane Jane

Step into a Southern hospitality daydream. On 14th Street NW, retro-style Jane Jane may be small, but it has big energy. Plaid blue mosaic tiles trace the floor and bar, there are walnut-wood walls, vintage-inspired cocktail wallpaper and forest green pendant lights and booths. With only 32 seats, the intimate vibe is a cocktail party at a pal’s place which is welcoming, unpretentious and playful. Two dozen cocktails are organised by liquor, five of which are house varieties, while comfort bites are inspired by the owner’s Southern hospitality. Try the pickled okra, pimento cheese or Jane’s caviar with trout roe, creme fraiche and potato chips.

Bartender’s choice:   Should We Be Bad is the bar’s take on a classic espresso martini, replacing vodka with bourbon and adding velvet falernum for extra depth and body. Meanwhile, the jazzy Jane Jane Mule, where bourbon, fino sherry, lemon, mint, ginger beer and Angosturra are swirled on the rocks, is also well worth a try.  

8.   Hill Prince

This H Street haunt is the quintessential neighbourhood bar: convivial, affordable and pouring top-notch tipples. Set in a 100-year-old row house, Hill Prince is named after a racehorse and the classy equestrian vibe extends throughout: exposed brickwork, original pine flooring, brown leather sofas, gold-framed mirrors and a lick of hunter-green paint. There’s even a restored carriage house and a verdant courtyard to spill into on balmy nights. Head to the long main bar, dangling with moon-like pendant lights, where classic cocktails are created.  

Staff picks:   Try the savoury Mole Old Fashioned on draft, made using rye whiskey, Montenegro Amaro, Xocolatl Mole Bitters and Angostura Bitters. Alternatively, sample the house-made syrups and elixirs included in signature, summery drinks like the Vodka Mule made with peach bitters and spicy ginger beer.

9.   The Pembroke

Parisian-style The Pembroke may draw bon vivants for a bite, but its cocktails make it a libation destination. Within the Dupont Circle hotel, this restaurant is airy, leafy and chic with cream-panelled walls, coral Chanel tufted banquettes and picture windows offering views out over a summery terrace. It centres around a classic marble cocktail bar topped with gold lamps, where tinctures are shaken and stirred. Alongside an enormous wine list, cocktails have seasonal twists and locally sourced organic fare includes homemade lobster bucatini and lamb tagine with citrus couscous, to name a few.

Bartender’s choice: “The Hibiscus Margarita is a sophisticated twist on the classic margarita, featuring Casamigos Blanco, Cointreau, freshly squeezed lime juice and organic hibiscus syrup. Hibiscus syrup contributes a unique floral note, creating a well-rounded and robust flavour profile,” says bartender Tashawn Jackson.
