Mediterranean cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

No two Mediterranean cruises are the same. Some bring travelers to the French and Italian rivieras for food, wine and cultural pursuits. Others head east to the Greek Islands, where passengers alternate days sipping ouzo at a beachfront taverna with trips to ancient sites. Each itinerary is a mix of urban tourist capitals — Barcelona! Rome! Istanbul! Jerusalem! — and sleeper gems, such as Portofino, Italy, or Kotor, Montenegro.

If you've never been to Europe, you may feel overwhelmed by destination choices. If you know which ports are on your must-see list, you might be more stumped by which cruise line to choose or which specific itinerary will be the best for you.

Know that you can't see everything in one Mediterranean cruise — even on sailings that run multiple weeks. Once you let go of your need to see and do it all and accept that you're on a sampler tour, you'll be better able to make your cruise selections and enjoy the ports your ship does visit.

Get started with this Mediterranean cruise guide. You'll learn the basics of itineraries, cruise lines, destinations, when to go and when to book your European adventure at sea.

Why cruise to the Mediterranean?

where does an eastern mediterranean cruise go

Many of the European countries on your travel bucket list lie along the Mediterranean Sea: Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Egypt. A cruise lets you hit many of the hot spots (the French Riviera, Barcelona and Venice, Italy) on one trip without having to navigate multiple hotels, transportation between cities and making dinner reservations in foreign languages.

For some people those experiences are a key part of travel. However, for vacationers who want all the attractions without the hassle, a cruise is an ideal way to explore the Mediterranean. This type of European cruise can be especially alluring to honeymooners, families and older couples.

Mediterranean cruises beckon travelers with a love of culture and history. Visit the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, or the Colosseum in Rome; see Michelangelo's David in Florence, Italy; or make a pilgrimage to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Take a tour to a medieval town or marvel at the construction of a soaring cathedral. If you've always wanted to see the pyramids in Giza, Egypt; the ruins in Ephesus, Turkey, and Pompeii, Italy; Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona; and the famous casino in Monaco, you can do it easily on a Mediterranean sailing.

You can also eat your way through the markets, cafes, trattorias, gelato shops and crepe stands in the ports you visit. Sample local wines at vineyards in France and Italy, or sip ouzo or limoncello made on the premises.

When do cruises go to the Mediterranean?

You might be surprised to learn that cruise ships sail the Mediterranean year-round.

The majority of ships, however, arrive in the spring and depart in the fall, choosing warmer climes like the Caribbean for holiday sailings. Only a few hardy stalwarts remain through the winter months. Most of those are European-based lines, such as Costa Cruises , MSC Cruises and Celestyal Cruises , but Viking also braves chilly weather for its destination-focused itineraries in Europe.

Best Mediterranean itineraries

You can find a variety of weeklong Mediterranean cruises, but if you've got the time, nine- to 14-night sailings are not uncommon. Seven-night cruises are best if you're short on time or want to tack on a few days in Barcelona, Rome or Athens before or after your cruise. Longer itineraries are ideal for experiencing a greater variety of destinations and traversing more of the Med.

Here are some the best Mediterranean cruise itineraries you should consider for your European vacation.

Western Mediterranean

The classic Western Mediterranean cruise sails between Barcelona and Rome, and calls in ports in Spain, France, Monaco and Italy. This is your chance to explore Tuscany and the French Riviera, as well as hit up Florence, Monte Carlo, Naples and islands such as Corsica, Mallorca, Sicily and Sardinia. Just watch out: Marquee destinations like Rome and Florence are both located an hour or more from the cruise port, so get ready for long bus rides and long days off the ship.

Greece and Turkey

The classic Eastern Mediterranean cruise sails out of Athens or Istanbul and visits a mix of historic places (Delphi, Ephesus via Kusadasi, Rhodes) and sun-drenched islands (Mykonos and Santorini).

Adriatic Sea

Some so-called Mediterranean cruises actually spend most of their time on the Adriatic Sea, sailing from Venice and visiting ports in Croatia and Greece, and sometimes Montenegro and Albania. You may also find an Adriatic sailing wrapped into longer Western or Eastern Mediterranean cruises.

The most easterly of the Eastern Mediterranean itineraries, Holy Land cruises spend time in Israel and sometimes Egypt, often with overnight stops or multiple days spent in each country to maximize touring opportunities. These sailings may also call in Cyprus or ports in Greece and Turkey.

Best Mediterranean cruise lines

where does an eastern mediterranean cruise go

Most major cruise lines send at least one ship to the Mediterranean every year. Even Carnival Cruise Line , known for its affordable cruises out of U.S. home ports, offers some Mediterranean sailings, as does Disney Cruise Line , which typically bases its ships near its theme parks.

If you're looking for a bigger ship, Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are the best choices as they base a handful of ships in the Mediterranean each year, arriving in the spring and departing in the fall. These lines offer a variety of itinerary choices, so you can find the Mediterranean ports you most want to visit. You'll also find lots of restaurant choices and evening entertainment options to keep you occupied at night when the ship is sailing.

Couples or families with grown children looking for longer sailings and a destination focus should consider Viking, which offers eight- to 15-night cruises through the Mediterranean, including three- and four-week voyages for retirees (or workationers?) who have the time for a most thorough exploration of the region.

Which luxury line is best for your Mediterranean cruise will come down to what you're looking for in a luxury ship and a European itinerary. However, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises stand out for including a large variety of shore excursions in their cruise fares. If you're a foodie, these two lines plus Oceania Cruises are notable for their culinary tours in port, plus destination-themed cooking classes on board.

Things to do in the Mediterranean

Sightseeing is a big component of Mediterranean cruises, whether that's exploring a historic site like the Roman Forum or the walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia; visiting cathedrals in Florence and Barcelona; or touring medieval villages, forts and old towns. You might want to skip the formal tours and merely wander around the port town, browsing local shops or grabbing a coffee or snack in a local cafe.

Culinary tours are also popular here. You can choose from roving food tours, cooking classes, winery visits and tastings, and meals made with local produce and cheeses in beautiful villa or farmhouse settings.

Travelers looking to stretch their legs might want to sign up for cycling tours in city and country settings, hike around a volcano on Santorini or Sicily, or even take a kayak for a spin in Croatia or Greece.

A beach day is possible in the Greek Islands or along the French Riviera, and many ports will have sightseeing cruises.

Best Mediterranean cruise ports

where does an eastern mediterranean cruise go

Everyone has their favorite list of the best Mediterranean cruise ports (as evidenced by the discussion I just had with TPG's cruise team about which to include). Some travelers want to hit all the most popular cities, while others prioritize the ability to walk right off the ship into the heart of the town. Some ports are better for historical attractions, others for cafe culture or outdoor activities.

The following cruise ports are generally standouts, no matter your travel style.

Barcelona: Both an embarkation port and a port of call, depending on your itinerary, Barcelona has much to offer first-timers and repeat visitors. Cruise ships dock at the end of Las Ramblas, the main thoroughfare in the old part of the city, so it's easy to leave the ship and simply wander. Don't miss Gaudi's fantastical buildings or a meal of tapas.

Monte Carlo, Monaco: Monte Carlo is both a fascinating port on its own and a gateway to the French Riviera. In town, you can walk to the casino, palace and stunning oceanographic museum. From town, you can take the twisty-turny Corniche coastal roads to destinations like Nice, Eze, Cannes and Grasse.

Dubrovnik, Croatia: Even if you're not in it for the "Game of Thrones" tour, you will be captivated by Dubrovnik and its famous walled city. Walk the walls or take to the water for scenic views of the old town.

Rome: It's actually a pain to get to Rome from the cruise port of Civitavecchia by bus or train, but it's worth it to experience the Eternal City firsthand. Tour the Vatican and Sistine Chapel at St. Peter's Cathedral, step back in time at the Colosseum and Roman Forum, climb the Spanish Steps, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain and meander through the Borghese Gardens. When your feet give out, take a breather with a gelato or plate of pasta.

Rhodes, Greece: The historic port of Rhodes no longer has a Colossus, but that doesn't take away its appeal. Ensconced by ancient stone walls, Old Town is easily walkable, composed of cobblestone streets lined with restaurants and stores housed in structures dating back to the 14th century. If shopping isn't your thing, keep walking until you reach the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, where you can take a tour, or venture out to one of the city's beaches.

Naples, Italy: Naples is one of our favorite ports because you have so many options of what to do there. It's the jumping-off point for tours to Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Or, if you want to explore the city on your own, perhaps sitting down to a lunch of the region's famous pizza, it's a quick walk right into town from your cruise ship.

Ashdod, Israel : Most cruisers don't stick around Ashdod; it makes our list of best Mediterranean cruise ports because it's the gateway to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Tel Aviv and the Dead Sea. Prepare to be amazed by the sites you will see, but also be ready for long bus rides and long days off the ship touring.

Istanbul: Istanbul is the vibrant city you might not know you need to visit. Serving as both a departure port and port of call on Mediterranean cruises, the city offers something for everything: the cultural icons of the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, intense shopping experiences at the Grand Bazaar, Byzantine palaces, traditional Turkish baths (called hammams), flavorful cuisine, Bosporus day cruises between Europe and Asia, and plenty of neighborhoods to explore.

When to book a Mediterranean cruise

It's a good idea to book your Mediterranean cruise early, even nine to 12 months in advance. You can take advantage of early booking discounts and promotions and have the widest selection of available cabins and suites and dining times (if applicable). An early booking is ideal if you're planning on using miles to book your flights or points for a pre-cruise hotel. Look for fall sales when the current Mediterranean season is winding down.

Another smart time to book a Mediterranean cruise is during January or February when cruise lines run their " wave season " sales, often with lots of extra freebies thrown into the cost of the sailing. You might find last-minute deals on spring cruises to Europe or still be considered early for fall itineraries.

What to bring on a Mediterranean cruise

The Mediterranean region has a temperate climate, but it still gets chilly in the spring and fall and can be brutally hot in the summer. Check the weather before your sail date and pack for the predicted temperatures — with layers, in case the forecasters are wrong and it's unseasonably hot or cold.

You'll likely do a good deal of walking on a Mediterranean cruise, so a good pair of walking shoes is a must. Bonus if you can find cute options you can wear on sea days or sneakers that can do double duty in the ship's gym.

If your tours take you to religious sites, especially in Israel and Egypt, you might need a modest outfit that covers shoulders, arms and knees. Ladies, a shawl is a versatile option you can toss over your shoulders (or hair if need be), use for warmth with your strappy formal night attire or as a blanket on the airplane.

Of course, North Americans taking Mediterranean cruise vacations will need a passport to fly to and from their ship's departure and arrival ports.

Bottom line

The Mediterranean is an amazing region to cruise, and a sailing there is a wonderful introduction to Europe for travelers who have never been. The varied choices of itineraries, cruise lines and ships can be intimidating, but rest assured, you can't really go wrong with any of them. Just know that once you go, you may feel a need to return — either to see a port you loved more in-depth on a land vacation or to sail to the Mediterranean countries you missed on your first go-round.

Benefits of travelling on an Eastern Mediterranean cruise

One of the great advantages of cruising the Eastern Mediterranean is that travelers can visit multiple destinations in a relatively short amount of time, without the hassle of constantly packing and unpacking. Cruise ships offer a range of amenities, such as restaurants, bars, pools, and entertainment, so travelers can relax and unwind between ports of call.

Of course, there are also some considerations to keep in mind when planning an Eastern Mediterranean cruise. Depending on the specific itinerary, travelers may need to obtain visas or vaccinations before they can enter certain countries. It is also important to be aware of local customs and cultural norms, particularly when visiting religious or historic sites.

Additionally, weather can be a factor when planning an Eastern Mediterranean cruise . The best time to visit the region is typically between May and September, when temperatures are warm and sunny. However, peak season can also mean higher prices and larger crowds, so travelers may consider visiting during the shoulder season for a more relaxed experience.

An Eastern Mediterranean cruise typically includes stops in various ports and cities located along the coasts of Greece, Turkey, Croatia, and Italy, among other destinations. Popular stops include Athens, Istanbul, Cyprus, Dubrovnik, and Egypt. The specific itinerary of an Eastern Mediterranean cruise can vary depending on the cruise line and the duration of the trip, but many cruises may also include stops in smaller, lesser-known ports or islands, providing passengers with a diverse range of experiences.

Overall, an Eastern Mediterranean cruise offers a unique opportunity to explore some of the world's most historic and culturally-rich destinations while also enjoying the comfort and luxury of a cruise vacation.

CIA Factbook

Those who love to cruise the Mediterranean recognize the diversity of the countries and the ports of call, but the vast history, art, and breadth of knowledge coming from this region of the world are mind-boggling. All of these factors make the Mediterranean Sea a marvelous cruise destination!

Twenty-three countries spanning three continents surround the Mediterranean. Some countries like Italy, Greece, Spain, France, and Turkey have many ports of call. Others like Croatia, Slovenia, and Morocco are just discovering what cruise tourism can do to help their economies. Finally, some countries are "off the beaten path" for cruise tourism, but you might be able to find a small or boutique cruise ship if you are determined to visit them.

Note: Since some Mediterranean cruises stopover in Portugal, it is included in this collection, even though it is not on the Mediterranean.

If you do a survey of which Mediterranean country is the most popular with travelers, there is a good chance that Italy will be the easy winner.

Italy's location in the center of the Mediterranean means that it gets included in many Mediterranean cruises. Cruise ships often embark or disembark in Civitavecchia , the port nearest Rome; Venice , Genoa, or Savona. The most popular ports of call in Italy are Genoa , Portofino, Livorno (Florence, Tuscany, and Pisa), Civitavecchia (Rome), Naples (Capri, Pompeii , Mt. Vesuvius, Amalfi Coast), Messina (Sicily, Taormina), and Venice.

Some of the smaller cruise ships will port at Portovenere or one of the Italian cities on the east coast such as Bari.

Vatican City (Holy See)

Vatican City, or the Holy See, is a separate country located within Rome.

Vatican City is home to St. Peter's Cathedral, the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel . Cruise ships porting at Civitavecchia, the port nearest Rome, provide easy access to Vatican City. Since Rome has a major airport, many cruise ships embark or disembark in Rome.

France is a favorite country for many travelers, and ocean-going cruise ships visit France from the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, or the English Channel.

France has several popular ports of call on the Mediterranean, including Nice , Cannes , Marseille , and Villefranche . Almost all of the large, mid-sized, and small cruise lines sailing the Mediterranean include French Riviera ports of call.

Monte Carlo, the capital city of the very small country of Monaco, is one of the richest cities in the world.

Cruise ships sailing the eastern Mediterranean, especially small and mid-sized ships, often include Monte Carlo and Monaco as a port of call.

Spain has several popular ports of call, including Barcelona, the busiest cruise ship port in the Mediterranean.

Almost all cruise ships sailing the Mediterranean have an itinerary that includes Spain. Many cruise ships embark and/or disembark in popular Barcelona . Other cruise ship favorites in Spain include Malaga, the port nearest Granada , and Cadiz, the port nearest Seville and Jerez.

In addition to mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands of Mallorca , Minorca, and Ibiza are also excellent cruise destinations. These sun-kissed Mediterranean islands have long been a favorite of northern Europeans; however, cruise ship passengers also enjoy visiting them.

Portugal is not located on the Mediterranean, but many cruise ships sailing the Mediterranean have ports of call in Portugal or use the city as an embarkation point.

Portugal is a lovely small country on the Atlantic Ocean. Cruise ships sailing the Mediterranean often use Lisbon as an embarkation or disembarkation port. Other ships port in Lisbon when cruising from the Mediterranean to northern Europe.

The island of Madeira , off the coast of Lisbon, is an overnight sailing from the capital. This island is beautiful and advertises eternal springtime weather.

Morocco has ports of call on both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Morocco is less than 20 miles from Spain and can be seen from Gibraltar on a clear day.

Cruise ships often port in Casablanca, Tangier , or Agadir when stopping over in Morocco. Cruise passengers can take overland trips to Marrakech in the interior, but it usually involves an overnight stay away from the ship.

Gibraltar is a very small country at the tip of Spain. Its citizens are very proud of their British heritage.

Many cruise ships on western Mediterranean cruises or those repositioning between northern Europe and the Mediterranean include Gibraltar as a port of call. Gibraltar is a great place to spend a day with something to interest everyone--history, natural wonders, and those marvelous Barbary apes!

Croatia is a beautiful country on the Adriatic Sea, with the Dalmatian Islands and interesting history. Cruise ships have now discovered Croatia.

Most cruise lines -- large, mid-sized, and small -- that sail the Mediterranean include one or more ports of call in Croatia.  Dubrovnik is the main port, but small ships also port all along the coast or at one of the many Dalmatian Islands. Hvar, Split, Korcula, and Zadar are all popular ports of call for the smaller luxury ships.

Dubrovnik is a wonderful old walled city right on the Mediterranean, and learning about the recent history of the Balkans is a terrific learning experience.

Greece's many islands , numerous harbors, and sunny Mediterranean weather make it a perfect cruise destination.

Greece and the Greek Islands are some of the most popular cruise destinations in the Mediterranean. Cruise ships sailing the eastern Mediterranean often visit Athens (Piraeus), Olympia, or some of the diverse Greek Isles.

Turkey is located in the far northeastern Mediterranean. Sailing through the Bosphorus at Istanbul, cruise ships enter the Black Sea.

Istanbul is the most popular port of call in Turkey, but many cruise ships also stopover in Kusadasi, which is near the ancient city of Ephesus. Other ports of call in Turkey include Kas and Antalya near Perge.

The island of Malta is found in the south-central Mediterranean. Its strategic location has led to its key role in several wars throughout history.

Several cruise ships include Valletta, Malta as a port of call on their Mediterranean cruise itineraries. The city of Valletta has a monochromatic look of all sandstone. It's very intriguing.

Limassol in the Greek Cypriot part of Cyprus is the main port of Cyprus. Celebrity, Costa, and Royal Caribbean all have cruises with Cypriot ports of call.

Cyprus is located in the eastern Mediterranean and has long been a source of controversy between Greece and Turkey, both of whom claim the island. Cyprus is currently divided in half. Its history dates back to Roman times, but Cyprus also played an important role during many wars, including the Crusades and World War II.

Although Albania's economy is growing, the country is still one of Europe's poorest. However, more cruise ships port in Albania than what you might expect.

Albania is located in the Eastern Mediterranean across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. Eastern Mediterranean cruise itineraries sailing from Venice or Athens sometimes include Albanian ports.

Montenegro is one of the previous Yugoslav republics on the Adriatic Coast north of Albania.

Only a few cruise ships visit Montenegro, but that number is bound to increase as travelers discover the beautiful coastline. Kotor is the primary port, and Viking Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn Cruises, SeaDream Yacht Club, and Silversea Cruises all include the country of Montenegro on Eastern Mediterranean cruises.

Slovenia is located on the Adriatic Sea south of Croatia. Only a small part of the country is on the coastline and Koper is the major port.

Viking Cruises, Holland America Line, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises include Koper, Slovenia as a port of call on some of its Adriatic Cruises.

Tartous is the main cruise port in Syria. Due to the current tensions in the middle east, no mainstream cruise lines currently port in Syria.

Until the Lebanon-Israeli war in 2006, Beirut was one of the eastern Med's most popular ports. No cruise ships currently include Lebanon on their itineraries.

Algiers, with a total population of about 3 million residents, is Algeria's largest city and the capital of the country. Algiers is the primary port of call.

Tunisia is on the northern coast of Africa and the capital of Tunis features the Bardo Museum , and the ruins of Carthage are nearby.

Israel is located in Asia on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean. Haifa, near Nazareth, is the most popular Israeli port.

Cruise ships sailing the eastern Mediterranean or on cruises between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea sometimes include ports of call such as Haifa or Tel Aviv in Israel.

Tripoli, Libya , on the northern coast of Africa, was a cruise ship port of call until the 2012 terrorist attacks.

Most of Egypt is located in Africa, but the Sinai Peninsula is in Asia. The Suez Canal separates the two continents.

For a country mostly covered with desert, Egypt has many cruise options. Cruise ships sailing the southern or eastern Mediterranean usually port at either Alexandria or Port Said. Cruisers can travel to Cairo to see the Pyramids and Sphinx on full-day shore excursions.

Cruises to the Red Sea usually stopover at Sharm el-Sheikh (spelled Sharm ash Shaykh on this map) for excursions into the desert, St. Catherine's Monastery, or for diving into the brilliant, clear Red Sea. Red Sea cruises also might stop at either Al Grahdaqah or Safaga (spelled Bur Safajah on this map) to enable passengers to go into Luxor on either a full day or overnight excursion.

A description of Egyptian cruises would not be complete without a reference to Nile River cruises , which usually travel between Luxor and the high dam at Aswan, and often include the option of a day trip to Abu Simbel. Over 300 river ships sail the Nile, so there are plenty of options for Nile River cruises.

Eastern Mediterranean: What to see and where to cruise

by - 3 Jul 2017

Pastel-coloured apartment buildings in Cyprus in the Eastern Med

The Eastern Mediterranean is a glittering, diverse region with no shortage of cruise destinations and stunning ports. Where to begin?

History, culture and natural beauty

Pastel-coloured apartment buildings in Cyprus in the Eastern Med

The eastern Mediterranean , extending from Venice through the Ionian Sea to the Aegean; the Turkish coast and further south; the shores of Israel, Cyprus and Lebanon; represents the greatest concentration of historical interest in the cruising world. In a single voyage you could, theoretically, see the iconic antiquities of Jerusalem, Athens, Delos, Olympia and Ephesus. Or you could squeeze through the Corinth Canal on a smaller ship, learn about Theseus and the Minotaur in the Palace of Knossos on Crete, gaze up at the chunky castle of the Knights of St John at Lindos, and look for Game of Thrones shooting locations from the ramparts of Dubrovnik.

This is also a region of great natural beauty with tremendous variety, from the pebbly beaches and crystal clear waters of Croatia , to the towering black cliffs of volcanic Santorini and the softer hills and cypress groves of the Ionian. Mixing culture with beach time and watersports is easy; Mykonos has gorgeous beaches, for example, or you could join a sea kayaking excursion in Dubrovnik, or snap a selfie on the famous Shipwreck Beach on Kefalonia.

Choose your route

Panoramic view over the buildings of Dubrovnik and out to sea

So how do you choose a route? Typically, an eastern Mediterranean fly-cruise would sail Venice-Athens, or round trip from either, or Rome-Athens (taking in part of the western Med as well). Plenty of lines offer fly-cruises from Venice, among them NCL, Royal Caribbean , MSC, P&O Cruises , Cunard and Celebrity. You can get a long way south and east without flying, too; P&O offers several Greek Islands cruises from Southampton, including a couple in the school holidays. Typically, in just over a fortnight, you will sail all the way to Rhodes, also visiting Athens, Mykonos and Katakolon.

A few ships still call at Istanbul, which used to offer a dramatic end to a meander through the region, but most lines are steering clear until the security situation is more stable. A lot still visit Kusadasi, though, which is the jumping off point for the antiquities at Ephesus and remains one of the big bucket-list ports of the eastern Med, the others being Venice, Santorini, Rhodes, Athens, Dubrovnik and Kotor.

The temporary demise of Turkey has led to a surge in popularity of Croatia and, by default, Montenegro, as the gorgeous old medieval town of Kotor, perched at the end of a long and spectacular fjord, is an easy hop from Dubrovnik. As a rule of thumb, the smaller the ship, the more adventurous the itinerary, so on a smaller vessel exploring Croatia, expect to see elegant coastal towns like Split and Zadar, or Korcula (like a mini-Dubrovnik), encircled by ramparts. There is a fashion for more in-depth exploration nowadays as cruisers seek more adventurous experiences; a case in point is Azamara’s new ‘Croatia Intensive’ voyage from Venice in 2019, which includes off-the-beaten-track ports like Hvar, Sibenik, Rijeka and Zadar, with an overnight in Split and a 10pm sailing from Dubrovnik.

Fish in the crystal clear water of Plitvice Lakes in Croatia

This idea of late sailings and overnights in port is a pleasing development in Mediterranean cruising and should be taken advantage of. If there is one place you want to be in port for ‘magic hour’, that golden time either side of sunset, it is the Greek islands, Italy or Croatia. Cunard and Celebrity are among the big ship cruise lines offering more overnights on their Mediterranean itineraries, while Ponant and Azamara both keep their mid-sized ships in port till late at night.

The far eastern reaches of the Mediterranean (Haifa and Ashdod, for Jerusalem and Galilee, for example), are high on many cruisers’ priority lists but are, of course, more subject to political volatility than anywhere else on the cruising map. Israel is certainly seeing a resurgence, though; cruise lines visiting include Celebrity, Cunard, P&O Cruises, Oceania, Seabourn, Azamara, Viking Ocean and Holland America, although more in the shoulder season months than the baking midsummer. There’s a tentative return to Egypt, too, visiting Cairo and the Pyramids from the Mediterranean port of Alexandria. You are most likely to venture here if you book a segment of a world cruise (on Fred. Olsen or Viking Ocean, for example) or a repositioning cruise to the Middle East, another region growing in popularity; luxury lines Crystal and Silversea both offer sailings from the eastern Med to Dubai.

When to visit

MSC cruise ship sailing on the Mediterranean

So when should you visit? Peak season for the Eastern Mediterranean is June to September but July and August, the busiest months, are not necessarily the best as temperatures are punishing and crowds can be overwhelming. If you are cruising with children in the school holidays, do build in plenty of beach stops and (dare we say this?), in more challenging ports like Athens, with young children in tow, you could even consider staying on-board instead of traipsing round the antiquities. You will have the pool to yourself.

May and June are particularly pleasant, as is mid-September onwards, right up until November. A couple of lines, namely MSC Cruises and Viking Ocean, offer wonderful off-season eastern Med cruises, too, sailing right through the winter, which means you can prowl the alleyways of Venice or take in the magnificent Acropolis without the crowds.

Eastern Mediterranean cruises encompass history, culture and natural beauty. Perfect for relaxation as a couple, a family or even a solo traveller, these cruise holidays will pique your curiosity and help you return home full of wonder.

How to Choose a Mediterranean Cruise Itinerary

When it comes time to choose which Mediterranean cruise itinerary to book, a little research can go a long way.

Choose your Mediterranean cruise to the southern Med for this sunset.

Three Mediterranean cruise regions explained.

Beauty, history, culture and of course, the food. A Mediterranean cruise offers something to appeal to everyone. Deciding which of the three main Mediterranean cruise regions to explore takes a bit of due diligence to know the differences of each one. If you only have time for a 7-night cruise, it’s even more important to know how to choose your itinerary.

Mediterranean Cruises in a nutshell.

Start with knowing the area. Europe, not including the Baltic region or the UK (those areas are included in many Northern Europe cruises), is comprised of three areas. Cruise lines divide these into Eastern Mediterranean, Western Mediterranean and Southern Mediterranean itineraries.

The glitz and glam of St. Tropez located on the Med near, Cannes, Nice and Monaco.

Start at the top of the Mediterranean coast from Barcelona. Ships hug the coast and head south to ports on the ritzy French Riviera. Here, you can stroll with the beautiful people along the sandy beaches in Cannes , St. Tropez and Nice.

Choose a Mediterranean cruise that heads further south is like stepping into the Mr. Peabody’s Wayback Machine. You can visit the once-thriving city of Pompeii (buried by an eruption from Mount Vesuvia in the year 79,) toss a coin in Rome’s famed Trevi Fountain and visit ancient Ephesus in Turkey, dating back to 1500 BCE. and of great historic significance to Christianity.

The Mediterranean Sea itself is so expansive, it can claim neighborhood bragging rights that encompass the Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea, Balearic Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, Ionian Sea, Ligurian Sea and the Sea of Crete. Wow. Cruise ships can even enter the Black Sea through the Bosphorus Straights of Turkey and set out for ports in Romania, Bulgaria and others that dot the immense Black Sea, to the Ukraine.

Eastern Mediterranean

If you long to visit Venice, the Greek Islands or bargain at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, an Eastern Mediterranean cruise is a best choice. Cruises in this region may overlap with a few ports included on western or southern itineraries and can vary from seven to fourteen days or more in length.

Waves crash against the rocks of the fortress Lovrijenac, built in 1018, in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The shorter cruises often depart from Istanbul or Piraeus (the port for Athens) and visit mainly Greek Islands and two or three Turkish ports, such as Izmir, Ephesus and Antalya. Longer cruises may set out from Venice and stop at ports like Dubrovnik on the Adriatic en route to the Med or from Rome for one-way and round-trip voyages to Greece, Turkey and even Israel and Egypt.

Western Mediterranean

Voyages in the Western Med follow the European coastline from Gibraltar and Barcelona in the north and continue southeast toward Marseille, Monaco and onto Civitavecchia, the port for Rome . A very popular itinerary, there are dozens of Western Mediterranean from which to choose.

The Faraglioni rock formations off the coast of romantic Capri tower more than 300-feet above the sea, on a Mediterranean cruise.

Islands in the Western Med are plentiful, like Mallorca, Corsica and Lipari, and fly the colorful flags of Spain, France and Italy. The beautiful, tiny and independent island of Malta is well worth a visit for its ancient and historic importance in this region.

Choose a longer Mediterranean cruise and it might follow around Italy’s boot and then north into the Adriatic Sea and up to Venice. En route to Venice, ports in the Adriatic can include those in the Eastern European countries of Croatia, Slovenia and Slovakia, to name a few.

A visit to cliffside town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast may be included on a Western Mediterranean cruise,

Southern Mediterranean

Distant ports of Egypt, Israel and North Africa are located on the far-reaches of the Mediterranean Sea. Cruises to these destinations usually begin in Rome, Istanbul or Piraeus (Athens) vary in length from seven to fourteen days.

The ports of Alexandria and Port Said lead to Cairo and from there, guests can purchase flight-seeing tours to the Valley of the Kings in Luxor. Sometimes cruise lines combine visits to Israel and Egypt in one longer voyage.

Exploring the ancient city of Carthage, Tunisia. The port of La Goulette is included on many Southern Mediterranean cruises.

Mention North Africa and images of Bogart and Bacall in mysterious Casablanca, Morocco, come to mind. Further south in Morocco is the city of Agadir, with its palm-lined beaches and upscale hotels. Cruises to Tunisia use the port city of La Goulette and tourists are transferred into the capital city of Tunis. Nearby ancient Carthage is the childhood home of Hannibal, the brilliant military strategist who crossed the Alps with a band of elephants to defeat Rome’s army.

What are Holy Land Cruises?

Cruises to the “Holy Land,” are simply cruises to Israel and may but not often anymore, include Egypt as well. Usually these cruises include both Israeli ports of Haifa and Ashdod. Cruise ships are adding longer visits and overnight stays to allow enough time for extended tours to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and even the mountaintop fortress of Mosada. Often, Holy Land cruises are combined with several Greek Islands and Turkey.

No matter which itinerary you choose, there is something of interest for everyone. From culinary delights to ancient history and religious significance, the entire Mediterranean region, from north to south, is a diverse, intriguing and memorable cruise experience.

The best rates and added-value amenities (reduced airfare, onboard credits, reduced or no solo supplements) can be found from April to late November. However, you will need to be prepared for sudden changes in weather. By fall, many tourists have gone plus you’ll have none of the sweltering heat of summer. Personally, my favorite time of year to cruise the Med is through September and October.

Mediterranean Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

As one of the greenest islands in Greece, Corfu is an emerald treasure amidst the colorful Mediterranean landscape. From Paleokastritsa, hike to the mountaintop for unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea. Or get a taste of Corfu when you team up with a famous chef, and handpick local produce that they’ll use to prepare your lunch. Experience it all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

As the largest port in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the gateway to opportunity. On a Mediterranean cruise, spend the day in Arles, and explore the landscapes that inspired much of Van Gogh’s artwork. Stroll through the MuSaMa, a soap museum, and create your own blend alongside a master soap maker. Or roam the city’s most popular landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garden, a Catholic basilica that overlooks the city.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Local connections

From chefs and beverage makers to artists and guides, meet the many personalities that call the Mediterranean home with our Local Connections program. On a Mediterranean cruise, voyage to an olive tree farm just outside of Provence, and join your hosts for a unique olive oil tasting. Or explore the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a local artist, and accompany them for lunch to dive even deeper in Italy’s art scene.

More ashore

Enjoy even more opportunities to experience the colors, cultures and flavors of the Mediterranean with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Witness the beautiful sunset in Mykonos on a Greek cruise. Sit front-row for a flamenco dance, and savor a paella dinner during an evening in Barcelona. Or stroll the illuminated streets of Genoa with gelato in hand after a traditional Italian dinner.

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

Mediterranean Cruises

Maps of the Mediterranean

There are 21 countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, and a cruise of the region is a great way to take in several countries with just one trip. The vast body of water (covering more than 960,000 square miles) is almost entirely enclosed by land, with a small connection to the Atlantic Ocean at the Straight of Gibraltar to the west and links to the Sea of Marmara and Black Sea in the east.

Cruises to the Mediterranean account for roughly three-fourths of all cruises to Europe, with the other fourth visiting the British Isles and Northern Europe. With many itineraries lasting seven days or longer there’s plenty of time for a variety of ports, activities, languages and tastes. Sun-worshippers can soak up the rays on the Riviera, while history buffs can admire ancient sites in Rome, Athens and Ephesus. The many stops on a cruise allow visitors to take in the stunning architecture of Florence one day before strolling through the botanical gardens of Cannes the next.

A cruise of the Mediterranean gives travelers access to some of the most popular cities in Europe, combined with the ease and comfort of cruising. Western Mediterranean trips typically call at ports in Spain, France and Italy. Some of the most majestic cities in Europe were built along the water and boast not only beautiful beaches and scenery but renowned cultural attractions. Often-visited ports include Barcelona, Nice, Florence and Rome. Cities in Portugal, Monaco, Tunisia and Morocco are also potential stops.

Itineraries for the Eastern Mediterranean include Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and also Italy again. The boot-shaped country’s central location in the region makes it convenient for trips to either side. Cruises visiting the Holy Land often combine Eastern Mediterranean ports with those in Israel and Egypt. There are also trips that focus specifically on the many islands in Greece.

Or visit one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in Ephesus. There’s no shortage of beauty and wonder awaiting during an Eastern Mediterranean cruise.

Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Highlights

Ancient ruins.

Explore fascinating historical treasures on a cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean. In Athens, visit the famous ruins of the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena that dates back to 438 BC. Step inside Diocletian’s Palace in Split, a sprawling fort built for a Roman emperor in the fourth century. During an overnight stay in Jerusalem, see famous religious landmarks including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the scene of Jesus’ resurrection, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, two sacred Muslim sites.

Greek Sunsets

You’ll never forget the first time you witness one of Greece’s legendary sunsets. Oia, a picturesque town on the island of Santorini, and Zakynthos, a small island surrounded by impossibly blue waters, are both considered some of the best spots in the world to see the sun go down. Make your way up a cliffside restaurant or viewing point and watch as the sky transforms into a canvas of pink, orange, and purple hues in the distance.

Mediterranean Cuisine

Feast your senses on the delicious food and drink of this magical region. Explore the unique flavors of Eastern Europe during your days in port, where you’ll dine in seaside restaurants, wander through charming local markets, and sip some of the best wines in the world. Enjoy grilled fish and fresh octopus in Greece. Order a plate of black risotto, a Croatian specialty, in Split or Dubrovnik. While in Israel, eat as much hummus, falafel, and baba ganoush as your heart desires.

Featured Ports

Sail into the sparkling coast of Dubrovnik, a chic Croatian port known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” Walk around the well-preserved city walls and admire the scenic terracotta rooftops. Feast on Croatian wine and oysters, two of the region’s delicacies. Visit the Rector’s Palace, a stunningly restored Gothic building. Enjoy a leisurely bike ride around a nearby village, then lounge under the sun at one of Dubrovnik’s lovely sandy beaches.

You’ll fall head over heels with Santorini as soon as you step foot on this idyllic Greek Island, where winding alleys are surrounded by white-washed buildings, blooming flowers, and spectacular views of the Ionian Sea. Explore the cliffside villages of Fira and Oia and their cafes, restaurants, and blue-domed churches. Sail around the island’s scenic half-moon-shaped bay while marveling at a volcanic caldera. Or lounge under the sun and dip your toes in one of Santorini’s famous black sand beaches.

East meets West in Istanbul, a cosmopolitan city located between Europe and Asia that combines the best of both worlds. Learn all about the rich history of iconic landmarks like the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. Go shopping at the labyrinth Grand Bazaar, where you’ll find all sorts of handmade treasures. Sip on a glass of Turkish tea by the Bosphorus, the body of water that separates the European and Asian sides of the city.

Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Itineraries

The Eastern Mediterranean cruise season begins in late May and lasts until mid-October. You’ll find everything from 6-night jaunts around Croatia, Greece, and Montenegro and 7-night sailings that stop in Italy, Malta, and Croatia, to lengthier journeys around the area, including 10-night cruises to Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro and 12-night journeys around Turkey and the Greek Islands. Most of our Eastern Mediterranean cruises spend only a day at sea, giving you plenty of time to explore the region in depth.

where does an eastern mediterranean cruise go

Mediterranean (Eastern)

Eastern Mediterranean cruises may visit ports in eastern Italy, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro or Slovenia. Holy Land cruises usually combine Eastern Mediterranean cruise ports with Israel and Egypt.

Tour the multitude of ancient sites in Greece, from the Acropolis in Athens to the temples of Zeus and Hera in Olympia. Walk along the beautiful beaches in Mykonos and Corfu, explore the medieval town of Korcula in Croatia, and marvel at architectural wonders such as the Blue Mosque and the Chora Church in Istanbul.

  • The Eastern Mediterranean cruise season is from late April to October, although a few ships cruise this region year-round.
  • Eastern Mediterranean cruises are typically 7 to 14 nights in length.
  • Because you'll need to fly a long distance to reach your port of departure, we suggest that you arrive at the port city at least one or two days in advance of your cruise. This will give you time to rest and get oriented before boarding the ship. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise hotel packages.

The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe

Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.

By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.

The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise. (Once you've chosen your cruise, check out our definitive cruise packing guide .)

River cruise boats float down a village-lined river in Germany.

1. Northern Rhine (Germany)

From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities

The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.

2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)

Explore intriguing towns in this border land

The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.

3. Rhône (France)

Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France

Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .

Sunset's golden light signs on the Italianite city of Passau and the Danube river.

4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)

Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe

The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.

5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)

Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east

The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.

Lush green vineyards line the banks of the Duoro.

6. Douro (Portugal)

See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine

The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.

7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)

A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe

Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.

The pedestrian Pont des Arts crosses the River Seine, linking the Palais du Louvre (shown) and the Institut de France

8. Seine (France)

Cruise out of Paris through northern France

Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.

9. Main (Germany)

A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube

Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A river flows through lush farmland in Germany.

10. Moselle (Germany)

An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region

Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .

How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?

The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.

While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.

Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.

When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?

Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.

Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.

Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.

12 Mediterranean Cruise Mistakes to Avoid

A re you going on a Mediterranean cruise? Mediterranean cruises are very different from Caribbean, Mexico or even Alaska cruises. It takes a little more planning to go on a Mediterranean cruise. To help you make the most of your cruise, here are some mistakes that you should avoid.

Mediterranean Cruise Mistakes to Avoid

1. fly in at least a day early.

A common Mediterranean cruise mistake that people make is they try to fly in on the day of departure. As you may already know from my cruise tips , flying in on the day of departure is not a good idea because you risk flight delays, which can cause you to miss the ship.

This is particularly true for Mediterranean cruises as you have to take an international flight, and going through the airport involves more steps. For example, if your cruise departure port is Civitavecchia (Rome), the airport is 45 minutes away from the cruise port. Adding the time it takes to go through immigration and customs, retrieving your luggage, and waiting for your Uber, you’re looking at a good three hours after arrival just to get to your cruise port.

What’s more, flights in Europe are often canceled due to airport strikes. That’s why, flying in on the day of your cruise departure is a risky move since you might encounter a flight cancellation or delay, causing you to miss the ship.

Another reason to fly in early is jetlag. If you’re flying in from the US, you’re likely to experience jetlag, and it’s best to give your body time to rest by flying in at least a day before your cruise departure.

2. Spend a Few Days at the Disembarkation Port

Another Mediterranean cruise mistake that people make is taking a flight out on the same day of embarkation. I suggest you stay at least a few nights after you get off the ship.

For example if you are taking a Western Mediterranean cruise, you’ll most likely get off at either Barcelona or Rome. It’s nice to have some time to explore and see the sights in Barcelona or Rome. You’re already in Europe, it would be a shame to rush back home without taking the time to explore and make the most of your trip.

3. Choose Your Hotel Wisely

Another Mediterranean cruise mistake that people make is they assume European hotels are like the hotels in the US. However, the standards are sometimes not the same.

For example, you should always check if your hotel has air conditioning. Many hotels in Europe are in older buildings and lack air conditioning.

Another thing you should know about traveling in European cities is that their metro system (subway) is really efficient and many people use it. So it’s best to find a hotel near a metro station so you can easily commute to the city’s main attractions. But do make sure to read the hotel reviews because some hotels near major train stations can be a bit sketchy and may not be safe.

You should also take into account how far the cruise port is to the main tourist attractions. For example, if you are getting off at the Civitavecchia Cruise Port which is the port for Rome, I don’t recommend you stay at a hotel in Civitavecchia to tour Rome. It’s too far, it takes an hour and 12 minutes to reach Rome. So if you plan to go sightseeing in Rome, it’s better to book a hotel in Rome, not Civitavecchia.

4. Don’t Overschedule

Many people make the mistake of scheduling back-to-back shore excursions every day when they go on a Mediterranean cruise. This can be too exhausting since Mediterranean itineraries usually have consecutive port days with very few sea days.

For example, a Western Mediterranean cruise typically has only one day at sea, and you are at a port every single day. Although it is tempting to overschedule and book full-day shore excursions every day, it will leave you feeling exhausted.

If you are traveling with kids, they will complain. I suggest giving yourself a break and doing some half-day tours. I know it can be hard, especially if it’s your first time in Europe!

5. Don’t Wing It

Some people make the mistake of not booking shore excursions when they go on a Mediterranean cruise. They just try to wing it. But it’s important to note that many of the cruise ports on a Mediterranean cruise are actually far from the main tourist attractions.

For example, if your cruise stops in Florence, you’ll be getting off at La Spezia, which is 1.5 hours away from Florence, or you’ll get off at Livorno, which is an hour away. Wasting your time trying to figure out transportation to Florence when you’re at the cruise port is not a good idea.

It’s best to book a shore excursion. I know that the cruise line shore excursion can be expensive, so I recommend comparing prices with independent cruise operators like Viator, which is usually cheaper than the cruise line’s shore excursion prices.

6. Book Shore Excursions in Advance

One common mistake people make on a Mediterranean cruise is not booking shore excursions in advance. Many wait until boarding the ship to book, which is often too late since most popular shore excursions are already sold out.

This can lead to a lot of stress. You will end up scrambling to find a shore excursion that you like and also wasting time lining up at the shore excursion desk.

Avoid all of this by booking your excursions online before leaving home. Don’t forget to compare prices with sites like Viator to make sure you’re getting the best deal. With everything planned and booked in advance, you’ll be able to enjoy your Mediterranean cruise from the moment you step onboard.

7. Don’t Buy Drinks Package if You Have a Busy Itinerary

One common mistake that people make on a Mediterranean cruise is they buy the drinks package without first considering their itinerary. However, drinks packages can be quite expensive and only make sense if you plan on drinking enough to justify their cost.

Take, for example, Carnival cruise, which charges $59.95 per person per day. If you’re spending a day at sea, you could probably drink enough to make it worthwhile, but if you’re at port, you’ll likely be spending most of your time outside the ship, which means you’ll only be drinking during dinner and after dinner.

It’s important to keep in mind that the cruise line charges the same daily rate for drinks packages, regardless of whether you’re at sea or a port. Many Mediterranean cruises are port heavy and will have very few sea days, so it may not be worth purchasing a drinks package since you won’t be able to drink enough to make it worthwhile.

8. Wear Comfortable Shoes

One common mistake people make on a Mediterranean cruise is not wearing comfortable shoes. Since you’ll be doing a lot of walking, it’s recommended that you wear sneakers or walking shoes with memory foam.

Plus, the streets can be uneven and cobblestoned, so high heels are a definite no-no. It’s best to be practical and wear comfortable walking shoes.

9. European Plug Adapter

It’s a good idea to pack a European plug adapter when you’re going on a Mediterranean cruise. Depending on the ship, you might need one on board, but you’ll definitely need one at your European hotel before or after your trip.

Most European countries use the Type C plug with two round pins, but some countries have different types. Bringing a universal plug adapter that works with most outlets is a good idea.

10. European Customs

Many first time visitors to Europe don’t realize that there are different European customs, which are different from what we’re used to in the US.

For example, if you go to a restaurant in Barcelona, don’t be surprised to see a restaurant cover charge (they charge for bread and for you to sit at a table).

Even water is not free in Europe, in fact, you’ll find that beer and wine are often cheaper than water! And when you order coffee at a café in Italy, you will be charged more if you choose to sit at a table instead of standing at the bar.

Many bathrooms in Europe are not free either. You will have to pay to use it, so it’s a good idea to have small bills with you.

11. Bring a Head Covering

One common mistake that many people make while on a Mediterranean cruise is not realizing the dress codes that apply when visiting mosques and churches. These places of worship usually require visitors to dress modestly, covering their shoulders, knees, and occasionally their heads.

Especially if you are visiting mosques in Turkey, you need to dress conservatively and women will need a head covering. I usually pack a shawl or pashmina to cover my head when I go on shore excursions (it also doubles as a blanket on the tour bus).

Be sure to take a look at my Mediterranean cruise packing lis t. I’ve got a free downloadable version of it that includes everything you need to pack for your trip, depending on the season you’re traveling in. Whether you’re cruising in the Mediterranean during the summer or fall, there is a packing list for you.

12. Watch Out for Pickpocketing

When you’re on a Mediterranean cruise, it’s easy to let your guard down and forget that pickpocketing is quite common in Europe, more so than in the US. To avoid becoming a victim to these thieves, make sure you travel with zipped bags and keep a close eye on your belongings.

Personally, I always travel with a slash-proof cross body bag since it’s a common tactic for thieves to slash bags to steal wallets.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to be careful. For example, my father had his wallet stolen right when he was about to step onto the metro in Paris. Someone stole his wallet from his back pocket, and since he was already on the train, he couldn’t chase after the thief!

As a tip, for men, I suggest using a crossbody bag with RFID protection and avoiding keeping your wallet in your back pocket. If you want to learn more about how to stay safe on a cruise, check out my anti-theft cruise tips .
