The 24 Best Wineries and Vineyards Near NYC That Are Well Worth the Trip

Author image: purewow author

The West Coast may get the lion’s share of the glory when it comes to America’s wine regions but guess what: the East Coast (especially the Tri-State Area) can more than hold its own when it comes to vino . In fact, New York State alone has a long history of wine production and is even home to America’s oldest winery. From Finger Lakes to Cape May to New Haven, there are plenty of gorgeous vineyards to see and outstanding wines to try just a stone's throw away from the city. So the next time you’re in the mood to tour and taste grapes of the fermented variety, forget the pricey trip to Napa and instead head to one of these 24 wineries and vineyards near NYC. Cheers!

  • Distance from NYC: About 1 hour and 15 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed: Yes with a limit of four guests when booking

We’d like to take a moment to thank visionary Jean Jaques, who bought land in 1810 and began planting grapes. By 1839, he had fermented the very first wine vintage in America. While many more wineries have popped up since, the Brotherhood is still a must for wine lovers. Check out their hand-excavated underground cellars, try out five of their popular wines and even enjoy live performances every weekend.

  • Distance from NYC: About 4 hours and 40 minutes by car

If you're in the Finger Lakes area (specifically Seneca Lake) for weekend getaway, head over to Standing Stone Wines. Reserve a table and try their extensive wine list while learning all about the production that dates back to the '70s.And while you're enjoying a nice glass, take in the gorgeous view of the vineyard that expands over 46 acres and overlooks the lake.

This Hudson Valley mainstay’s list of accolades is too long to get into here, but trust us, you’ll love the wine as much as you love the sun-drenched tasting room.Since it was originally a dairy farm, don't be afraid to pair your wine with the in-house line of artisanal cheeses, jams and sauces, made in collaboration with local farmers. (Blood-orange cheese drizzle, where have you been all our lives?)

1900 State Rte. 66, Ghent, NY

Known as the oldest vineyard in America, Benmarl Winery continues to be a staple in Malboro. Grab a tour, sip some of their wines and take in the views of their 37-acre state with an impressive shot of the Hudson River Valley. And if you're lucky, they just might be making some pizza in their wood fired oven (so call ahead to find out).

156 Highland Avenue, Malboro, NY

6. Millbrook Vineyards & Winery

  • Distance from NYC:  2 hour and 30 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed:  Yes (but walk-ins are allowed for wine tastings on a first come, first serve basis)

Owner John Dyson’s interest in wine started when he tried to impress a date with a jug of the stuff and enrolled in a wine course, but then grew to a full-fledge winery for everyone to enjoy. Since 1998, you can enjoy outdoor and indoor guided wine tastings, tours of 30 acres and relaxing in the picnic area (or terrace seating) overlooking the Catskills Mountains. Plus, if you're stopping by on Fridays, enjoy Friday Night Food Trucks, where you can enjoy local food, tap wine and fun lawn games for the whole family.

26 Wing Rd, Millbrook, NY

7. Rooftop Reds

  • Why We Love It: seasonal pizza and wine movie nights, rooftop views, offsite tastings available
  • Distance from NYC:  40 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed:  Yes

While we have a few notable wineries in the city, the so-called concrete jungle isn’t exactly conducive to a proper vineyard. Fortunately, the Rooftop Reds founders were up for the challenge, opening the world’s first commercially viable rooftop vineyard inside the Brooklyn Navy Yard (and trust us, the space has a lot to offer). Grab your friends and enjoy a glass while taking in the views of the bustling city, or for a more hands-on experience, join a wine tasting, participate in one of their nightly yoga classes or catch a movie overlooking the Empire State building.

299 Sands St. Bldg. 275, Brooklyn, NY

8. Croteaux Vineyards

  • Why We Love It: specializes in rosé, tasting garden, Condé Nast Traveler favorite
  • Distance from NYC:  3 hours and 15 minutes by car

This Instagram-perfect vineyard, with its charming cobblestoned back patio and intricately designed bottles, can appropriately be summed up in a certain three-word hashtag:#roséallday. It’s the only vineyard in America dedicated exclusively to the pink stuff (and we're here for it). During the spring and summer, the tasting garden is particularly breathtaking as you're surrounded by a colorful and vibrant backdrop.

A wine expert will guide you through the tasting while teaching you the ways their award-winning drinks have been made. And if you want to skip the tour and tasting, come by for Sunset Fridays and Saturdays where no reservations are needed. Just order a glass of wine, grab a bite and enjoy live music.

This family-run winery owes its high-quality wines to sustainable farming methods and a small-batch process. While you won’t want to leave the sunny outdoor pavilion, we insist you step inside the restored barn to peep the owner’s contemporary art collection. And if you're stopping by on a Sunday enjoy live music from local artists.

36225 Main Rd., Cutchogue, NY

11. Warwick Valley Winery

  • Why We Love It: seasonal weekend live music, also offer ciders and spirits, on-site café with seasonal offerings
  • Distance from NYC:  1 hour and 55 minutes by car

The Hudson Valley is home to many wineries and vineyards but nothing beats Warwick Valley Winery. They started out growing apples, and have grown to providing wines, spirits and ciders (including New York's Original Cider). This family-owned vineyard is a Long Island gem. Pick one of the experiences they offer to learn all about their wines while exploring the 500-acre space. Check out the Summer Tasting, where you can sample three wines, a cheese selection and a personal charcuterie board for each guest.

150 Bergen Avenue, Mattituck, NY

New Jersey Wineries and Vineyards

13. willow creek farm & winery.

  • Why We Love It: open year-round, full grill and charcuterie menu

Cape May is already a hot spot for beaches, resorts and entertainment. It's no surprise they have a farm and winery to add to the list of fun things to do. Indulge in their group wine tasting (exploring five favorites), a tour via an electric cart to learn about the 50-acre farm or stop by Fire Pit Fridays for drinks, farm-fresh food and live music.

  • Why We Love It: wine and comedy shows, food pairing experiences, pet-friendly

If you're looking to enhance your wine tasting skills, add in the Wine, Charcuterie & Chocolate experience where you can pair award-winning wine with meats, cheeses and delicious chocolate truffles. Or, choose the Chef Jose's Wine and Tapas Experience where you try some wine and fresh Spanish tapas (because wine pairs well with more than just meat and cheese).

80 York Rd., Ringoes, NJ

15. Beneduce Vineyards

  • Why We Love It: sustainably farmed, small-batch wines, family-friendly Sunday picnics with live music and food trucks
  • Distance from NYC:  1 hour and 10 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed:  Yes but open to walk-ins on a limited basis

This NJ vineyard is where you'll find the finest wines in the state, but it’s really the events that have us trekking away from the Big Apple. Every weekend, join "Group Therapy" where there are live performances, local food trucks and fun lawn games. Whether you're relaxing on the lawn or want a peaceful moment with your wine at their crush pad, the whole fam can join a weekend of bliss.

1 Jeremiah Lane, Pittstown, NJ

16. Hawk Haven Vineyard

  • Why We Love It: specialties include white Port-style wine, Méthode Champenoise Brut and Méthode Ancestrale sparkling wines; seasonal live music and food events
  • Distance from NYC:  2 hours and 35 minutes by car

There's always something fun happening at the Hawk Haven Vineyard. Since opening its doors in 2008, it has delivered a variety wines and activities, plus a healthy dose of local pride. Daily you'll find an event for the wine lover, foodie or music aficionado. In particular, The Rootstock concert series bridges all those together every weekend with local musicians, ever-changing food trucks (and their priceless wines of course) and exclusively to adults only (so leave the kiddos at home). But if you're looking to mellow out reserve a spot to learn all about the vineyard, wine selection and local farm.

600 South Railroad Avenue, Rio Grande, NJ

17. Tomasello Winery

  • Why We Love It: 10 locations throughout the state, opera galas, seasonal events
  • Distance from NYC:  45 minutes by car

FYI, this is not your average winery. Yes, you can head to the Hammonton area to check out their vineyard but why limit yourself to one spot in the Garden State? If you’re interested in trying one of their 50+ wines, their tasting room is scattered across ten locations in the state. Once you head over to one, there you can choose from their signature (which has five samplings) or Riedel (which has eight samplings and a souvenir glass) tastings. How would it be visit all ten, we wonder?

Various locations, see website for more information

new york vineyards: laurita winery

18. Laurita Winery

  • Why We Love It: food truck season pass available, seasonal food and entertainment events
  • Distance from NYC:  1 hour and 30 minutes by car

Come for the wine (and their signature sangria) and stay for all the fun events happening on the weekends. On Fridays, stop by for Fridays at the Grove, order from Laurita's Eats (we’re fans of the turkey club or steak melt) and hang out for a while. Or show off your cornhole skills at a friendly competition game where you can win big prizes (like a $200 cash card). And if you're in a dancing mood, grab tickets to an 80s-themed dance party because why not?

85 Archertown Rd, New Egypt, NJ

The award-winning winery (with 440 awards) is a must-see spot in Guilford area. Why? For its wide selection of wine and hard ciders. You don't have to wait until the weekend to try a wine tasting (so, wine Wednesday anyone?). Take in a tour or finish off with a look at the Bishop's Orchards Farm. 12 of the Best New York Wineries, From Brooklyn to the Finger Lakes

From the Finger Lakes and Hudson Valley to New York City and Long Island, here are 12 of the best New York wineries.

Anne Olivia Bauso is a travel writer and hotel expert based in New York City. She has written hundreds of hotel reviews, from 5-star Ritz-Carlton properties to treehouse eco-resorts in the jungle.

When it comes to wine making in the U.S., sunny California gets all the love. It's true, the Mediterranean-like valleys north of San Francisco are certainly ideal for vineyards. (Fertile soil is one perk of the area's seismic tendencies.) Yet many grape varieties are cuckoo for cooler temps, and Northern California is not the end-all, be-all of American wine production. On the opposite side of the country, New York state — whose viticulture was once rather limited to sweet concord ice wine — has quietly grown into a wine-producing powerhouse. Wine making in the state's Hudson Valley dates back to the 1600s, so it's not totally surprising that New York has emerged at the forefront of the industry.

From the North Fork of Long Island to the Finger Lakes and back to Brooklyn (really!), the Empire State is home to some 2,000 wineries and vineyards — the majority family-owned and several truly outstanding. Here are some of the best New York wineries and vineyards.

Finger Lakes Wineries

Ravines wine cellars in seneca lake.

The Finger Lakes may not be as wine-famous as Napa and Sonoma, but this rustic winery proves that the region is just as stunning. The incredible natural beauty — rolling bands of green vines, the deep, dark blue of glacier-carved Seneca Lake — would tempt grape lovers to stick around even if the wine wasn't very good. (Luckily, it's very good.) Ravines ' beautifully restored barn looks like it's straight out of California wine country, as do the artful meat and cheese boards and the wedding-ready tasting menus.

Nearby: The 1914 Geneva on the Lake Boutique Resort Hotel was designed to emulate a villa outside of Rome. Pay homage to the hotel's Frascati inspiration by drinking up lake views and a glass of sparkling.

Boundary Breaks in Lodi

This pristine winery on the Seneca Wine Trail focuses on cool-air-loving riesling grapes, grown on-site, fermented in stainless-steel casks, and made in styles ranging from sparkling to sweet to super dry. Red wine lovers, fret not: Boundary is also known for its fruit-forward cabernet franc.

Nearby: The Finger Lakes region is patchworked with family winegrowers….and orchards, creameries, and horse pastures. Between idyllic vineyard visits, explore the area's non-wine offerings, like Rue Claire Lavender Farm and Wolftree , a pick-your-own blueberry farm with an apiary and wool from Icelandic sheep, set between Seneca Lake and Finger Lakes National Forest .

Vineyard View in Keuka Park

Go for the vino, stay for the views. This fifth-generation grape farm has a primo spot far above Keuka Lake. For the full experience, grab a two-top on the terrace and sample the selection, from the just barely spicy (and quick to sell out) traminette to the dry marquette — harvested, crushed, and pressed on-site.

Nearby: If Vineyard Views isn't hosting a pop-up event with a local restaurant, drive three miles up the lake for a heaping tray of fried chicken and mashed potatoes (and a sundae) at Seneca Farms Ice Cream .

Stever Hill Vineyards in Branchport

This family-friendly farm doesn't quite compare to Vineyard View's lake scenery, but its panorama of grapevines and forested hills is as peaceful as can be. And it has the sort of warm, laid-back vibe that encourages all-day lingering, with a genuinely friendly staff happy to make recommendations. A renovated barn (with a backbone of 1850s hand-hewn wood beams) houses the tasting room, wine shop, and big back deck. Try the fan-favorite Old Barn Red (aged in New York oak) or, on a hot summer day, a juicy, boozy slushie.

Nearby: Conklin's Gully and Grimes Glen are lovely waterfall hikes within easy reach by car, for anyone really wanting to earn their afternoon wine flight. Work in a stop at the Havill Pottery farm studio, long run by a husband-and-wife ceramicist team, for functional souvenirs of the hand-painted stoneware sort.

Hudson Valley Wineries

Benmarl winery in marlboro.

Benmarl is what you're picturing when you think of the ideal upstate visit. The small-scale operation has spruce columns of grapevines stretching along the hillside, an antique pick-up truck hidden in the garden, and a driftwood gazebo framing the Hudson River Valley — the perfect spot for sunset photo ops. Benmarl focuses on small-batch NY wines, from their site-grown Baco noir and cabernet franc varieties to North Fork merlot. If you need to soak up all that wine, order a bubbling pizza, wood-fired in an outdoor brick oven.

Nearby: Toast to a day well spent at The Ship Lantern Inn , a cozy dining room that throws back to another era, 10 minutes up pretty Highway 9W. (If you're looking for a pre-winery meal, try your luck for brunch at Blooming Hill Farm . Even if the wait stretches into hour-long territory, it's time well spent.)

Millbrook Vineyards & Winery in Millbrook

With 130 acres that feel like the French countryside and a big vaulted barn venue, it's really no surprise that visitors love this Millbrook winery. The wine holds its own against the magical setting — sit at the tasting bar to sample Millbrook's chardonnay, cabernet franc, and heady pinot noir, or pick up bottles and go at your own pace, preferably in an easy chair on the front lawn.

Nearby: Millbrook's shop sells crackers, sea salt caramels, and other local goodies, but if you're looking to have a picnic or throw dinner on the grill, head four miles north to Big Rock Community Farms Market . The charming two-room shop in Stanfordville carries local H.V. produce, meat, cheese, and more on the ground floor of an 1845 house. Call in advance to visit Conrad Levenson 's open-air sculpture garden, a little further north, with whimsical works made from materials like scrap metal, salvaged wood, and wagon wheels.

Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery in Gardiner

After a morning hike through Minnewaska or Mohonk Preserves (or a morning scramble up Bonticou Crag), reward your efforts in Whitecliff 's cozy tasting room or shady picnic grove. The sustainable winery (named for the white cliffs in the distance) is known for its merlot and malbec blend (a bestseller), fruity vidal blanc, and oak-fermented chardonnay. There's a solid menu of affordable flights, too; just be sure to book your reservation through the website.

Nearby: For more local goodness, drive up to Butterfield for a rhapsodic meal celebrating the natural bounty of the Hudson Valley (you'll see Whitecliff on the excellent wine menu). If you're in more of a bar food mood, there's the quaint New Paltz gastropub, Huckleberry .

Milea Estate Vineyard in Straatsburg

Though it's new on the scene, this 98-acre vineyard has already carved out a big name for itself on the Dutchess County wine trail. Anchored by a charming white farmhouse, this small estate makes a crowd-pleasing sparkling rosé, a plummy merlot, and a crisp chardonnay that reflects Hudson Valley's unique terroir.

Nearby: Stand high over Ferncliff Forest — a 200-acre chunk of old-growth forest peppered with easy walking trails and old stone ruins — in its fire tower with magnificent views of the land and Hudson River. Swing by Migliorelli Farm Stand for fresh dinner supplies or check into Mirbeau Inn & Spa Rhinebeck for a luxe retreat.

Long Island Wineries

Pindar vineyards in peconic.

Long Island's North Fork is a string of upscale wineries — and Pindar Vineyards was among the first. These days, the former potato farm is now a 500-acre enterprise with nearly 20 varieties of grapes (and a famous sunflower field). Fans swear that Pindar wines, including their red table wine (a smooth bordeaux blend) and vivid cabernet sauvignon, could vie with those made in California and France.

Nearby: Remain transported at North Fork Table & Inn — the chef earned his chops in kitchens in Paris and Napa Valley.

RGNY in Riverhead

Maria Rivero González harvested grapes with her family for years in Mexico's Parras Valley before setting her eyes on the North Fork. Attracted by Long Island's cool, maritime climate, the Mexican winemaker opened her certified-sustainable vineyard in 2019, where she grows and bottles unfiltered cabernet franc, velvety viognier with a hint of pineapple, and other meticulously thought-out wines.

Nearby: Taste the freshest oysters of your life at Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market , a homespun seafood shack in Greenport, before retiring to the beautiful The Menhaden (and its rooftop deck overlooking the harbor).

Castello di Borghese Vineyard in Cutchogue

Castello di Borghese lays claim to the title of Long Island's first vineyard. In the early 1970s, its founders realized that the area's fertile soil and oceanic climate were irresistible to grapevines. Modern-day visitors swear the vineyard's still got it (it's run by the original family, after all), praising its excellent pinot noir, peppery cabernet franc, and zippy sauvignon blanc.

Nearby: Hit up another local 70s-era landmark, Magic Fountain , where homemade ice cream flavors range from kulfi (rosewater, pistachio, and cardamon) to vegan coffee almond fudge.

New York City Wineries

Rooftop reds in brooklyn.

Beaches, ruins, cathedrals, caves...and wineries. Yes, New York City really has it all. The city is home to a number of wineries (where wines are made from grapes grown elsewhere), but Rooftop Reds ups the ante and actually grows grapes (via a unique planting system) on a 14,800-square-foot rooftop in Brooklyn's Navy Yard. You'll have more than a dozen bottle selections, plus traminette, white, and dry rosé on tap — not to mention killer skyline views and bragging rights (how many inner-city vineyards do you know?).

Nearby: Former Crown Heights favorite The Food Sermon is a go-to for huge, healthy Caribbean bowls (think gingery rice with curried chicken and market veggies).

Another one of our absolute favorites, and one of Long Island's most popular vineyard destinations! Pindar Vineyards encompasses more than 500 scenic acres. They grow 17 varieties of grapes, crafting them into some 23 varietals and proprietary blends. Pindar produces 70,000 cases of wine a year, making them the largest vineyard on Long Island! But at heart, they are still a family business with a personal touch in every aspect of the process. Pindar also puts an emphasis on striving to create more impactful wines with less impact on the environment.

Long Island Spirits

A great vineyard alternative to add some diversity to your tour! Long Island Spirits was established in 2007 as the first distillery on Long Island since the 1800's and became the 100th Distillery in the United States of America. Surrounded by centuries old of potato, corn and rye farms, the distillery is located on the bucolic North Fork of Long Island, in the heart of the acclaimed wine region. Long Island Spirits is proud of its sustainable distillery practices and the innovative fermenting, distilling and blending techniques it has pioneered.

Jason's Vineyard

Jason’s Vineyard was planted in 1996 using only the finest clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Jason's Vineyard also purchases the grape varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, Seyvel Blanc, Cayuga and Riesling. Jason's pioneered the dense spacing of vines on the North Fork. This technique, not seen prior to Jason's Vineyard, is more closely planted than many other local vineyards. The six feet between rows and three feet between adjacent vines are Bordeaux measurements. A lovely and relaxing vineyard destination.

Hawk Ridge Winery (CT)

One of our popular non-Long Island destinations. Hawk Ridge Winery, part of Hidden Breeze Farm, is located in Watertown, Connecticut, a peaceful farm setting, in which to enjoy friends, family, and fantastic wine. Hidden Breeze Farm has been in existence since January, 2012. They decided to name our winery after the abundance of red tail hawks on the property. Hawk Ridge is dog friendly on the lawn and in the tent area. You may bring your own food it just can’t be serving style/in serving trays/or from an outside caterer. Ideal destination for tours leaving from New Jersey.

Jamesport Vineyards

Jamesport Vineyards is a father-son collaboration that began in 1986 making it one of the North Fork’s oldest vineyards. The tasting room has increased to accommodate an ever growing number of visitors. The great lawn out back provides the perfect setting for the Jamesport weekends where people gather to enjoy great wine, light fare and summer jazz concerts. Other event spaces throughout the property provide the perfect setting for weddings, private parties and small gatherings. A fun and lively vineyard destination!

The Best New York Wineries for Day Trips from the City

By Tyler Zielinski

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard New York winery in The Finger Lakes

Most people think of California when it comes to wine travel in the U.S. But look almost 3000 miles east to New York state, and you’ll find a handful of wineries that can pull their weight, just a few hours’ drive from New York City .

For a day trip or a long weekend centered around great wine in the Empire State, we head to three regions: the Finger Lakes , Hudson River, and Long Island. They’re all designated as American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), with unique microclimates ideal for specific grape varietals like Riesling and Cabernet Franc. But they’re also home to great boutique hotels, farm-to-table restaurants, and lakeside views, offering plenty to do when you aren’t visiting a tasting room.

Read on for our favorite wineries just outside of New York City, all of which are worth planning a trip around, and how to visit them.

HUDSON VALLEY

Benmarl Winery

Benmarl Winery

Benmarl Winery is a short hour and a half ride north of the city, nestled in the lush green hills of Marlboro beside the Hudson River. It’s home to the oldest vineyard in America, and has some of the country's oldest vines of Baco Noir —a French-American hybrid grape variety native to the Northeast and Canada. “For estate wines [wines made from grapes grown on the winery’s property], they are unparalleled in the region,” Tristen Gild, manager and buyer for wine shop Kingston Wine Co. , says.

Like many other growers in New York, Benmarl has a noteworthy Cabernet Franc, and a refreshing Baco Noir rosé with notes of blueberry and strawberry—the perfect Summer wine. (The Margherita pizza from their wood fired oven also hits the spot.)

They are open 7 days a week, reservation-only , so remember to book in advance. Stay across the Hudson River at The Roundhouse in Beacon , and make sure to stop at the newly opened cocktail bar, Wonderbar for their elevated take on the Pimm’s Cup dubbed “The Constant Gardener.”

Rose Hill Farm Hudson Valley

Rose Hill Farm

The historic Rose Hill Farm farm is perfect for a quintessential Hudson Valley experience. Known for their U-Pick fruit program, Gild says the farm is also producing the most innovative line of ciders and fruit wines in the valley. “[They’re] mostly made with no sulfur added and wild yeasts,” says Gild, “and they are also releasing a series of wonderful, natural grape wines from fruit grown in the region.” Sample various wines and ciders, such as the 2019 Sundrops (a pét nat-style sparkling wine made from the farm’s shiro plums), or their 2019 Lulie pét nat made from Merlot and Cayuga grapes in collaboration with Kingston Wine Co.

After spending an afternoon picking fruit and drinking on the farm, drive thirty minutes north to artsy Hudson for a night at family-run Wm. Farmer and Sons , or the newly opened Maker Hotel . Just down the road you’ll find expertly curated natural wines and elevated bites and drinks (such as Rose Hill Farm’s cider) at the cozy Lawrence Park .

(Note: Rose Hill Farm doesn’t take reservations and is primarily open on weekends, but they make exceptions depending on the ripening schedule of their fruits. Make sure to also read their COVID-19 guidelines before visiting.)

LONG ISLAND

Shinn Estate Vineyards Long Island

Shinn Estate Vineyards

Whether you want to visit for a tasting, or stay at the vineyard’s chic Farmhouse Inn, Shinn Estate Vineyards offers a relaxing wine experience on Long Island’s North Fork , just two hours from New York City. Visitors can expect a balance of luxury and comfort with both a state-of-the-art tasting room, and a patio overlooking the bucolic vineyards.

Wines are available by the glass, or in curated flights. Indulge in medium-bodied reds, such as their tannic and expressive Cabernet Franc and red field blend; or a Riesling or Pinot Blanc for something lighter. Joe Monaco, a local who runs the @Greenportnorthfork Instagram page, suggests settling in at the tables right beside the vineyard rows (ideally with a plate of cheese), or taking a walk between the vines to “feel the terroir right under your feet.”

The nearby Love Lane Kitchen , just two miles away, is another staple in the area for casual food, a vibrant atmosphere, and a host of Long Island wines.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard New York winery in The Finger Lakes

Kontokosta Winery

Two and a half hours outside of the city is one of New York’s most scenic wineries: Overlooking the majestic Long Island Sound, Monaco argues that Kontokosta has the best views on the eastern seaboard.

From rosé to Riesling, Kontokosta’s wines also deliver on quality and sophistication. Their 2014 vintages of Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon are all award-winning and worth keeping on your radar for tasting.

The winery offers cheese, charcuterie, and other small bites, but there are a few local eateries to stop at after as well. The Halyard Restaurant at the Soundview Hotel is a must for waterfront views and small plates like the Shinnecock Sea Scallops served over risotto (best paired with a local wine like the 2019 Sauvingnon Blanc from Raphael). Cocktail enthusiasts should swing by premier cocktail bar Death and Company’s residency, which is running at the hotel through October.

Only a 10-minute drive down the road is another East End institution, North Fork Table & Inn , recently reopened with a wine menu curated by sommelier Amy Racine . The fine dining experience explores the farms, saltwater, and vineyards of the North Fork.

(Note: Kontokosta is reservation-only due to COVID, so be sure to review their regulations before booking.)

FINGER LAKES

Kontokosta Winery Greeport Long Island

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard

Hermann J. Wiemer is regarded as one of the pioneers of viticulture and winemaking in the Finger Lakes, and helped put the region on the map for its Riesling. Book a tasting to sample their expertly crafted wines, and make sure to try the Pinot Noir and sparkling Blanc de Noir as well. Their outdoor picnic tables, which overlook the vineyards, are a must during the summer, but they also have indoor seating in the winery for chillier days.

Thomas Pastuszak, wine director at The Nomad and founder of Terrassen Cellars , suggests chasing your visit with a stop at nearby wine bar & bistro, Supernatural Lake , which has outdoor live music (and charming rental cottages ) right on Cayuga Lake. New York City wine bar, Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels, is hosting a pop-up on site all summer, too.

(Note: Reservations are available for the tasting room, but due to COVID-19, payments are contactless and cashless.)

Red Newt Cellars The Finger Lakes

Red Newt Cellars

Red Newt Cellars is a staple in the Finger Lakes community, and popular with travelers because of its hospitable staff and fine selection of wine and food: Come for a mix of solid whites and reds on the outdoor deck overlooking the farm, then snack on locally sourced cheeses and meats at the on-site bistro.

With access to some of the best vineyards on Seneca Lake, Rieslings from their label are a no-brainer; but indulge in the Bordeaux blends, Cab Francs, and Pinot Noirs for a taste of the diversity found in the region. ( Reservations are always recommended.)

Up the road, stop at Dano’s for delicious Austrian cuisine and more local wines. “It's great for lunch on the wine trail, or amazing sunsets over Riesling vines for dinner,” says Pastuszak. The goulash, and schnitzels are the best sellers and go quickly, so be sure to get those orders in as soon as you get there.

21 Best Finger Lakes Wineries to Visit in 2024

View of the grapevines looking out over the Finger Lakes

Best Wineries, Wine Tasting Experiences and Vineyards in the Finger Lakes to Visit During 2024

The Finger Lakes region is located in the center of New York State, about 4 to 5 hours from Manhattan, 1 to 2 hours from Rochester, and 2 to 3 hours from Buffalo. The lakes themselves are long, narrow bodies of water that run north to south. The largest of the lakes are Seneca, Cayuga, and Keuka but there are several smaller lakes in the area as well.

The Finger Lakes have historically been a vacation area for New Yorkers because the lakes moderate the local climates, providing a cooling effect in the summer and some warmth in the winters. For that reason, vinifera grapes thrive here, albeit cool climate ones! Long a producer of Riesling, the Finger Lakes wine region has become known for Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and many other grapes, like Blaufränkisch, that grow well in chillier temperatures.

RELATED: Learn More about the Finger Lakes’ History, Terroir and Grape Varieties

Here, we explore wineries, tours, restaurants, and hotels around the Finger Lakes. With so much natural beauty, the Finger Lakes are endlessly explorable – especially when wine is involved!

Best Wineries in the Finger Lakes to Visit

Heart & hands wine company.

4162 NY-90, Union Springs

(315) 889-8500

Why Guests Love It: Excellent Pinot Noir, Knowledgeable Staff, Beautiful Seating

Ravines Wine Cellars

400 Barracks Road, Geneva

(315) 781-7007

Why Guests Love It: Historic Barn, Food Pairings, Sustainable Agriculture

Ravines bottles terroir. By focusing on the soil composition, microclimates, and which varieties thrive where, there’s no mistaking their commitment to purity. Be sure to book a Tasting Table experience to taste the Finger Lakes at its best.

4760 West Lake Road, Geneva

(315) 789-9583

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Barn, Chocolate Pairing, Dog-Friendly Patio

In addition to having some of the best wines in the Finger Lakes, Billsboro is just plain fun. Seasonal Pizza on the Patio is always an event, and one that should be booked in advance. Add in live music and gelato and there’s little reason to go anywhere else.

Keuka Spring Vineyards

243 Route 54, East Lake Road, Penn Yan

(315) 536-3147

Why Guests Love It: Gorgeous Views, Family Friendly, Vegan Wines Available

Overlooking beautiful Keuka Lake, Keuka Spring Vineyard is gorgeous, relaxing, and delicious. Their Blaufränkisch (aka Lemberger) has a cult following, and with good reason. Keuka Spring also offers vegan wines for those who are committed to a vegan lifestyle.

Anthony Road Wine Company

1020 Anthony Road, Penn Yan

(315) 536-2182

Why Guests Love It: Excellent Service, Lake Views, Art Gallery

Anthony Road is an exercise in art. Come for the wine (obviously) but stay for the gallery and grounds, both of which are thoughtfully curated. And for those of us who are stuck in New York City and can’t make it up to the Finger Lakes, we have good news: Anthony Road is available to taste at the Union Square Greenmarket!

Scout Vineyards

468 NY-14, Penn Yan

(315) 409-6866

Why Guests Love It: Stellar Chardonnay, Knowledgeable Staff, Bread & Cheese Boards

A newer and much-needed addition to the Finger Lakes wine scene, Scout offers some funky offerings unlike anywhere else. RELATED: Learn More About Unique Grape Varieties in the Finger Lakes

Dr. Konstantin Frank

9749 Middle Road, Hammondsport

(800) 320-0735

Why Guests Love It: Historic Winery, Interesting Varieties, Cheese Platter

Dr. Konstatin Frank is one of the oldest wineries in the Finger Lakes and holds the fascinating story of emigration and triumph. After leaving Ukraine in 1944, Dr. Frank settled in the Finger Lakes and opened his own winery that we still know and love. Among the most sought-after wines is their Rkatsiteli, ancient Georgian variety. Don’t miss it.

Domaine LeSeurre

13920 NY-54, Hammondsport

(607) 292-3920

Why Guests Love It: Lake Views, Excellent Cabernet Franc, Macaron Pairing

Winemaking team Céline and Sébastien LeSeurre of Domaine LeSeurre settled in the Finger Lakes and brought their viniferal ancestry with them. In addition to tasting through their stellar wines, guests can opt for a macaron pairing – which just seems too good to be true – or a small-bites pairing. Both are thoughtfully crafted to highlight just how fabulous pairings can be.

RELATED: Learn More about Domaine LeSeurre

Weis Vineyards

10014 Day Road, Hammondsport

(607) 284-4011

Why Guests Love It: Historic Building, Fabulous Riesling, Modern Vibe

Weis is one of the newer wineries in the Finger Lakes but it’s already making quite a name for itself. Owner and winemaker Hans Peter Weis hails from Zell Mosel in Germany and brings with him both classic traditions and modern education. With his wife Ashlee, Weis is crafting stunning Rieslings, Gewürztraminer, and more. Be sure to try the Zweigelt Rosé for a treat!

Living Roots Pop Up

8569 County Road 87, Hammondsport

Why Guests Love It: Fun Experience, New York-Australia Collaboration, Minimal Intervention

Living Roots Wine Company is a bit like your eccentric vagabond friend who always seems to pop up in unlikely places. With roots in both the Finger Lakes and Australia, Living Roots has a tasting room in Rochester, a winery in Adelaide Australia, and a pop-up tasting area in Hammondsport. And while we’d love to send you on to Australia, we’ll stick with Hammondsport for now. This bi-continental approach enables guests to taste through wines that simply aren’t seen elsewhere, all in a super laid-back atmosphere.

Hickory Hollow Wine Cellars

5289 NY-14, Dundee

(607) 243-9114

Why Guests Love It: Family Owned & Operated, Vineyard Views, Low Alcohol Wines Available

Small production and family-owned, you’re likely to talk shop with the owner or another immediate family member while you’re here. Hickory Hollow is chill and friendly, with a range of delicious wines to try. Those interested in lower alcohol have plenty of choices as well, with most of the wines ringing in under 13% ABV.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard

3962 NY-41, Dundee

(607) 243-7971

Why Guests Love It: Historic Winery, Vineyard Views, Stellar Rieslings

Established in 1979, Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard exemplifies Rieslings in the style of Wiemer’s native Mosel: dry, aromatic, and simply delightful. And while there are non-Riesling options as well, it’s worth tasting through vineyard specific bottlings to see what a difference terroir makes. Wiemer is a stalwart of Finger Lakes wines, year in and year out.

Finger Lakes Wine Tours

Let the experts do the planning – and the driving! Here are some of our favorite tours.

The Seneca Lake South Wine Tastings Tour is the perfect way to explore the largest Finger Lake without worrying about driving. It’s fully customizable, too, which means you get to choose which wineries you’d like to visit. You can also stop for lunch at either your preferred place, or on the recommendation of your driver.

Another great option is the Keuka Lake Winery Tour . Not as large as Seneca, Keuka still manages to have many fabulous wineries clustered around it. A designated driver will bring you and your friends to taste while filling in details about the region and winemaking process. A lunch stop can be added as well.

Best Finger Lakes Restaurants

F.l.x. table.

22 Linden Street, Geneva

(315) 730-3083

This vision by chef and Master Sommelier Christopher Bates is based on community and creativity. The seasonally based prix-fixe menu is always impressive, as are the range of possible wine pairings.

4432 West Lake Road, Geneva

(315) 789-2020

Port Café is the best of all possible worlds: the food is stellar while the setting is low-key and unpretentious. Overlooking Seneca Lake, the menu has vegetarian and gluten-free options, alongside local and international wines by the glass.

Pleasant Valley Inn

7979 NY-54, Bath

(607) 569-2282

Set in a beautiful mansion from 1848, the Pleasant Valley Inn offers an impeccable dining experience. The menu is classically French(ish) with options like cedar plank salmon and filet mignon, but there are vegan options as well. Or, get a classic cocktail and some fresh oysters for a relaxed nibble or two.

The Park Inn

37 Shethar Street, Hammondsport

(607) 224-4004

Focusing on a seasonal menu, The Park Inn offers fantastic dishes like an orchard harvest salad with New York State cheddar and house made gnocchi with local kale. The décor is informed by local history, including the link to early aviation and flight.

F.L.X. Wienery

5090 NY-14, Dundee

(607) 243-7100

If the name seems to ring a bell, it’s because it is indeed connected to F.L.X. Table. Also by Master Somm Bates, commitment to excellence is clear but that’s about where the similarities end. The Wienery is all about being “high end low brow” food. It’s chill, it’s fun, and it’s THE place to get your hot dog or burger on. Pick one of the inventive dishes – like the K-Town burger – to have your mind blown.

Stonecat Café

5315 NY-414, Hector

(607) 546-5000

Stonecat Café has long been a favorite and we’re glad it’s been able to stick around post-pandemic! Seasonal, local ingredients inform the menu, alongside local wine, beer, and cider. Stonecat is also very considerate of all possible allergies so it’s a great option for those with varying needs. Be sure to check out live music, too, for a fantastic evening.

Kindred Fare

512 Hamilton Street, Geneva

(315) 787-0400

Designed to be warm and engaging, Kindred Fare nails it in every aspect. Check out the wonderful plates to share – like spaghetti squash gratin or poutine – or off-road it with your own heap of fried chicken. Don’t worry, vegans – there’s an entire menu just for you that goes way beyond portobello burgers. Be sure to try one of their fantastic cocktails while you’re there – and yes, there are non-alcoholic options too.

Graft Wine + Cider Bar

204 North Franklin Street, Watkins Glen

(607) 210-4324

We’re not quite sure how Graft somehow manages to be homey and hip but who are we to question a winning combination? Locally sourced ingredients are transformed into dishes that are almost too perfect to eat – almost, because you’ll be happy you did!

Finger Lakes on Tap

35 Fennell Street, Skaneateles

(315) 685-9600

If you’ve had enough wine – or just need a break – the Finger Lakes is also dotted with breweries and distilleries. Thankfully, you can taste through the wide range of brews at Finger Lakes on Tap, which has an extensive beer list. The food is classic pub kicked up a notch, with Bavarian pretzels, fondue, and all sorts of burgers.

The Elf in the Oak

4221 NY-414, Burdett

(607) 546-4641

Because sometimes, you just need an honest to goodness sandwich joint, are we right? Their breakfast sandwiches are the perfect way to fuel up before a day of wine tasting, though you’ll probably want to circle back later in the day for schnitzel on brioche or a fried tofu sub.  Check their Facebook page for the latest updates.

Always a guest favorite, Mirbeau  is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or just an escape to decompress for a while. On-site spa services include massages, facials, and mineral soaks, and the bistro provides French-inspired meals all day. Mirbeau leaves no detail unattended.

The Inn at Gothic Eves

112 East Main Street, Trumansburg

Located right in the heart of Finger Lakes wine country, The Inn at Gothic Eves  is cozy, plush, and modern. Breakfasts are fresh, healthy, and delicious and are made from locally sourced growers. The grounds are just as stunning as the rooms, and guests can wander around to their hearts’ content.

We’ve already recommended the Inn for dinner, so why drive any distance after? Rooms at the Pleasant Valley Inn are top-notch, with wonderful details like chocolate chip cookies and rocking chairs scattered around the property. Breakfasts are a standout as well.

Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel

16 North Franklin Street, Watkins Glen

More of a traditional hotel, Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel has beautiful views of Seneca Lake and among the most helpful staff around. From turn-down service to winery recommendations, the staff happily accommodates guest needs. The on-site restaurant, Blue Pointe Grill, is a bonus.

The Lake House on Canandaigua

770 South Main Street, Canandaigua

Located right on Canandaigua Lake, the modestly-termed Lake House is more like a grand estate with stunning views. Cocktail lounges, balconies, and a lakefront pool round out the already white-glove experience, and the staff is happy to arrange excursions for guests as well.

Top Finger Lakes Activities

For those looking for non-wine activities, the Finger Lakes offers plenty! Here’s a small sampling of year-round activities, though there are plenty of seasonally-specific activities as well.

(607) 937-5371

Remember Corningware? That culinary staple in everyone’s kitchen? Well, it’s from – you guessed it – Corning, NY! And the city has carried on the tradition with the Corning Museum of Glass. Watch live glass-making demonstrations, or explore the stunning exhibitions. Or, just get lost in the gift shop, which has way too many fascinating goodies.

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion

250 Gibson Street, Canandaigua

(585) 394-4922

It’s hard not to notice how many sprawling mansions and estates there are throughout the Finger Lakes and thankfully, many have been preserved and updated. The former summer home of a New York banker, Sonnenberg is now a New York State park that welcomes everyone. Explore the beautiful gardens, tour the Victorian mansion – or even taste through some Finger Lakes wines!

Buttermilk Falls State Park

106 East Buttermilk Falls Road, Ithaca

(607) 273-5761

For those wanting more strenuous hikes, Ithaca is the place to be. Between the hills and gorges, you’re sure to get an exhilarating workout. Buttermilk Falls is a beautiful pocket in the region, and the soft cascade provides a fun splash-about in the summer months.

It’s a Wonderful Life Museum

76 Fall Street, Seneca Falls

(315) 568-5838

If you’ve ever watched the holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life,” you’ve probably noticed how many references there are to upstate New York – from George and Mary singing “Buffalo Girls” to Sam Wainwright talking about plastics in Rochester. That’s because the hometown of Bedford Falls is based on Seneca Falls in the Finger Lakes. Explore the tribute to cinematic history, and maybe even feel inspiration to search for Zuzu’s petals.

Watkins Glen State Park

1009 North Franklin Street, Watkins Glen

(607) 535-4511

One of the most beautiful parks in the region – which is filled with beautiful parks – Watkins Glen has no less than 19 waterfalls to discover. Pets are allowed on-leash, and campsites are available to reserve. It’s worth spending several days here.

Getting to the Finger Lakes

Since the Finger Lakes region is comprised of many different lakes (eleven, in fact), visitors need a car. You can check current rental rates here on Kayak . The region is accessible from bigger cities like Buffalo, Rochester, and New York, but moving between wineries and activities do require driving. For that reason, it’s best to plan ahead and either hire a driver or take it slow when visiting wineries.

Access to most of the Finger Lakes run south from the New York State Thruway, so visitors should choose which towns to visit and plan from there.

Carla Bruni sitting in a chair sipping her new rosé, Roseblood d'Estoublon

Think of her as the vintner in Vogue.

Supermodel, singer-songwriter, former first lady of France and now celebrity winemaker Carla Bruni has introduced her elegant rosé in the U.S. Called Roseblood d’Estoublon , the 2023 blush wine is produced on a magnificent Provençal estate and received an “outstanding” rating of 90 from Wine Spectator.

“I have completely fallen in love with winemaking,” said Bruni at the launch party in New York, where she performed a captivating short set as her husband Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France from 2007-2012, gazed at her adoringly. “It has a common point with music -– it’s a very creative process. Making it is a magical moment.”

The high-profile couple teamed with friends to buy the 495-acre domaine in 2020. Located in Fontvieille on the southern slopes of the Alpilles mountain range, the leafy property is famed for its 18th-century castle , fragrant rose gardens, award-winning olive oil and organically farmed vineyards. The gorgeously decorated 22-room residence – which boasts a movie theater, fitness studio, library and hammam steam bath along with an outdoor pool – has ten antiques-filled rooms and suites and is available for buyouts (from $108,000).

The large white Château d'Estoublon surrounded by trees and bushes.

Day visitors can book a tour and tasting, along with a meal at La Table d’Estoublon , the on-site restaurant serving local specialities and the château’s own wines. Executive Chef Emmanuel De Oliveira designed the menu, which is inspired by harvests from the garden.

While Sarkozy doesn’t drink, Bruni does, and she enjoyed participating in the development of the label’s rosé.

“I knew nothing about wine. Really, like not a clue!” Bruni told Alexa. “It was a whole new discovery for me. I’m used to working with my ears and my eyes, but not so much with taste and smell.

“I’m just like a pupil,” added the 56-year-old musician. “I just learn. I don’t have input, I just listen and observe their way of working. And then I participate by tasting. I give my advice and my preferences. We work as a team and it’s lovely.”

She’s a fan of the flagship wine’s unusual name. “I like it because it has something sensual,” said the artist in her trademark sultry, low voice. “Also, it has the snake on the bottle, which is nice because it’s a little transgressive. It’s like a sin – but a nice, kind sin.”

One she pairs with everything from sushi to Indian to traditional French food. “It’s a very adaptable wine,” she says.

Bruni was born in Turin, raised in Paris and educated in Switzerland. The daughter of Alberto Bruni Tedeschi, a wealthy industrialist and classical composer, and Marisa Borini, a concert pianist and actress, she was raised in splendor. As a young woman, she discovered that her biological father is Maurizio Remmert, an Italian classical guitarist with whom her mother had a long affair.

Bruni started modeling as a teenager and strutted her way to the top of the profession, working for luxury houses such as Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel and Versace. She dated Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger, although she told the Post in 2014 that the Rolling Stones frontman was “never really her boyfriend.”

In 2003, Bruni released her first album, “Quelqu’un m’a dit” (“Someone Told Me”), which spent 34 weeks in the top ten of the French albums chart. She went on to release five more records, and has sold more than 5 million albums.

After a whirlwind romance, she married Sarkozy in 2008 at the Elysée Palace. Their daughter, Guilia, was born in 2011.

Bruni has a son, Aurélien , from a previous relationship with French philosopher Raphaël Enthoven. The handsome student graduated from Columbia University and is currently getting a masters in Paris at Sciences Po, one of France’s most prestigious universities. In 2022, he made his runway debut at the Versace spring 2023 show in a baroque-print shirt and black pants.

“He did a very short [stint] of modeling just for fun,” said Bruni proudly. “He’s very intellectual. All his energy is put into his studies.

“Sometimes I wonder if he’s my own blood!” she joked. “I was such a bad student myself. I didn’t study at all!”

An autodidact, she’s working on new music, which will drop next year.

“I am so slow!” she exclaimed. “I do everything so late. I’m writing the album right now. That’s my favorite time.”

That, and rosé-o-clock.

Taylor Swift brought Gracie Abrams out onstage Sunday night during the latest show of Swift’s Eras Tour .

Abrams, who opened for Swift’s Eras Tour last summer, released her second album, The Secret of Us, on Friday. The album features the track “Us,” a collaboration with Swift.

Onstage at London’s Wembley Stadium, Swift noted that the song was written one night when the duo were hanging out, drinking wine and talking about Abrams’ life. “And talking about your life became this song,” Swift added.

After “Us,” Swift performed a second surprise song — a mashup of “Out of the Woods,” “Is It Over Now?” and “Clean.” The latter three are all featured on the album 1989 (the original and/or the released version).

On Friday, Abrams posted two videos of the two working together. The second video showed Swift grabbing a fire extinguisher to put out a small kitchen fire.

“Writing this entire song from 2am to 6am was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. @taylorswift now we know how to use a fire extinguisher. I love you,” Abrams wrote.

Abrams previously hit the stage with Swift last summer in Cincinnati, performing her own song “I Miss You, I’m Sorry” with Swift on guitar.
