while thats cool and all, I dont see anything daily driver about that lol. cutting out the rear wheel wells doesnt seem very DD. this is for a dedicated rock crawler. how do they "Seal up" the rear with the struts going through it like that?

xterra long travel kit

Well, this looks like a fun project for when my X retires from daily driving duties!

xterra long travel kit

I want to see what they're doing in the front to match that 20" of travel.

They have a long travel kit for the frontier/xterra that cycles 19" 2wd and 17" 4wd

xterra long travel kit

If you need 20" of travel, you likely need a roll cage too...?

xterra long travel kit

...and mounts for JATO units! It makes me so happy to see there are some yahoos out there pushing the envelope of what can be done with this great platform. God bless these people.

Got all excited until i saw the wheel well.

xterra long travel kit

Same here. I'd love to do away with the leaf springs and run a 4 link setup, but cutting into the body like that is too rich for my blood.

And I guess that would be why no one bothers making aftermarket parts for nissan guys. A bunch of cheap ass in here lol..... I get it it's not for everyone, but its cool to see something else for.our platform besides the run of the mill Titan Swap/PRG spacer lift/add a leaf/etc. you see everyone else running on this site.

Definitely pretty cool in my opinion. Hopefully these guys are still out there and haven't given up on the not-the-most-enthusiastic Nissan peeps by the time my X in not my only car. I would love to play with this kit and take the X to King of The Hammers!

Why do they use dual dampers on these off road builds? Do they run high and low speed damping in separate dampers? Oh... and are those things just mounted to the stock body or is there some reinforcement that I'm not seeing?

xterra long travel kit

This kit from CJD is as much DIY as the SAS offered by Z1offroad or RuggedRocks. And this is dailydriven friendly compared to Danny's (Groot) xterra built for desert go-fast-ness...

xterra long travel kit

Has anyone measured what the “stock” rear travel numbers are for comparison? I don’t think I’ve ever come across them. Front travel is pretty common knowledge on the forum by now, with various options (titan swap, coilovers, UCAs). I imagine that remote reservoir Radflos like I have plus shackles probably are an improvement over stock.

Definitely keep us posted, I'm very interested as I was planning on having CJD install a rear Titan axle on my R51 Pathfinder as well.

I guess there isnt many puddles in the desert? like actual sand dunes style desert.. what your in is a varied terrain, at least in that pic.

pjleitzell said: One thing I've heard of people doing who run the rear shocks thru the floor like that is a rubber shifter boot from a stick shift/manual. Like in the pic below. Or I've heard wet suit material works pretty well too....im sure you guys will figure something out. View attachment 142038 Either way i know I'd be willing to put up with a little dust in the back for the huge performance gains u get from the set up...but then again I'm probably spoiled by the weather we get in california.....like today low 70s and sunny the last week of January 😎 Click to expand...

Long travel kit for 1st gen?

xterra long travel kit

  • Add to quote

I have always liked the pre-runner look with the coil overs. I know total chaos use to make a kit but does not make it anymore, is there some other option out there? I’m looking at doing a full suspension overall on my truck, replace all the bushing and ball joints, because they’re starting to become a bit warn out from age but rather just upgrade and get it the way I want.

xterra long travel kit

Really. They still have it on their website. TC doesn't seem like a company that will not simply make one for you. TOTAL CHAOS FABRICATION - 1998-2004 Frontier 4x21998-2004 Xterra 2WD Long Travel Suspension Kit

From what I have read in other posts Firebreed got the last kit they made and they will not make any more kits ever http://www.clubfrontier.org/forums/f46/total-chaos-2wd-long-travel-kit-98-04-4cyl-frontier-35787/

Looked around in a place and just found this, it looks like they might still have them in stock. 98-04 Nissan Frontier 2wd Long Travel Kit LT Kit - CORE Charged - Kartek Off-Road But as for the other question, did anyone else make a long travel kit other then total chaos

where do you get the bushings and ball joints to overhaul suspension on a first gen?

I got all the parts but the lower bushing on rock auto. The lower bushing I got off amazon but ended up just replacing the upper bushing and ball joints. To be honest depending on where you live and if your truck has rust do yourself a favor and spend the extra money and buy the control arm set with new bushing already installed. I had to burn, cut and drill out the bushing and it was just a mess. If your bushings are fine just get the ball joint and replace them.

xterra long travel kit

I actually emailed total chaos yesterday about a LT kit and they told me they are no longer producing them for our trucks and nobody has any left. Bummer Sent from my SM-G928T using Tapatalk

I got the same response, also everyone who says they sell it online dont have them as well.

The 4 cylinder kit and the v6 kit is very different. There is a guy that still makes a 4 banger kit. There was another thread recently that I replied in and had links. Can't find right now.

xterra long travel kit

Yep Total Chaos is almost completely out of the Nissan game. I called Las Vegas Desert Fab and they said they could do a "one off" the same as TC for a little more money. I told them the TC kit was $3500 they said that is in the ballpark but it might be a little more..... I am seriously considering it.

One more option I have considered... just buy the Titan long travel kit from Dirt King and have it fit to a first gen. They would have to cut off all the mounting tabs and fab up a shock hoop/upper control arm mount but there is plenty of room to work with. This would gain you about a tire width on both sides! Like 16 inches of added track. Nissan Titan Long Travel Race Kit

xterra long travel kit

Interested to see if you ever made that happen with the Titan kit?

xterra long travel kit

Keep an eye out in the classifieds on off road web sites. Total Chaos kits pop up every once in a while.

Looks awesome can't wait to see the finished product! Would be happy to find a total chaos kit come up somewhere though. I'll keep my eyes peeled for it. Any idea how much that'll end up costing you after buying the kit and all the fab to make it work?

counting the currie axle, third member with gears, dirt king long travel, fuel cell, fiberglass, shocks, hydro steering, all the parts to make that work, wheels/tires, paint, labor and so on.... about 25k.:crying:

Yea maybe one day a motor swap after I finish paying for this..lol

An inexpensive lift for 1st gen (not PML)

  • Add to quote

xterra long travel kit

Wut? I found a way to lift my xterra and save $$$$$!!! Wooo hooo!! I'm hoping to get 4" out if it. Looks like it will work. No cutting, no welding, everything bolts up.

what is the science behind this?

xterra long travel kit

Go on Chairman, you have my attention...lol

OdiN said: What I think people with 1st gens would be interested in, is an aftermarket lower control arm - one which could use the same ball joints as the aftermarket UCA's, so that they are easy to replace, and can be easily replaced on the trail if one should break. Click to expand...

Well I'm definately interrested. So keep us posted!!!

xterra long travel kit

If/when you get it to work, are you going to sell them???

Alpha said: You're just making long travel lower control arms. Unless you make longer upper control arms as well you are going to have crazy binding. Also, how did you mount the torsion bars? I dont see them on the picture with the control arms mounted. There is also no shock mount. I also don't see a front differential, are you lifting a 2wd? you can't lift a 4wd IFS truck more than 3" without a drop bracket for the differential of one form or the other and maintain traction in the front. What are you going to do for the steering? Not raining on your parade but you've got a lot of homework to do. Click to expand...
OdiN said: He said those were for his Impala. He hasn't made Xterra ones yet...from what I read. Click to expand...

chairmnofthboard said: Thank you. Click to expand...

xterra long travel kit

Good Luck!! the impala ones look really nice, and bullet proof.... And if you decide to sell I would be very interested!!!!

Alpha said: I just really wanted to post that pelican picture since I saw it. But all my arguments stand, you're going to need to figure all of that stuff out eventually. I think your biggest problem is getting those 4" of a-arm drop without dropping the differential AND maintaining traction. Click to expand...

If you can do something like a long travel kit while retaining the torsion bar set up I think it will be a lot more accessible to people. You should consider steering on the xterra, there is a huge market amongst D22 platform trucks that are used to wheel and need a reinforced steering system. Right now only calmini sells a "reasonably" priced kit.

xterra long travel kit

looking forward to the progress.

xterra long travel kit

TJTJ said: If you can make strong, reliable UCA's that will allow alignment with ~ 3" of lift for less than $350 a set with new ball joints...especially with more than stock droop, you will sell plenty of them. Click to expand...

pleas keep us posted as I am in the same boat as you don't want to go the route of calmini or rancho and no pml either so i'm stuck...lol very interested in what comes about with you experiment

I'm definatley interested as well keep us posted

xterra long travel kit

hey charimnofthboard, I too am interested and look forward to the progress you make. I am not into body lifts either and spending thousands on parts for my x to be lifted just seems a little ridiculous. Kudos to your efforts to bring a better mousetrap to the market to compete with the heavies. May the best product win.

Thanks guys, I've been busy with work and Haven't had time to get started. i might finish the prototype rock sliders this weekend.

chairmnofthboard said: If you follow the IMPALA arm thread, you will see that my balljoint angles are better than they were before. You will see that I built about 6 versions until I got everything right. Inexpensive for me. Selling wasn't my original plan. Follow the IMPALA arm thread. I've received many PM's to make those control arms for other people. So far I'm the only one with them. I build things for ME, for ME to enjoy. IF I can pass the knowledge to others to enjoy and for others to build, then I'm happy. I'm not total chaos, CL, SRL. I'm just a guy that likes to build and work on stuff. Click to expand...
