The Asiatic Library in South Mumbai

The Asiatic library in Mumbai is one of the oldest and most famous libraries of the city. It has a collection of over 100000 books and has been enriching the heritage of our country since ages. The library treasures a collection of manuscripts, books and periodicals, coins, painted folios, maps and prints. You will also find the valuable collection of books like German translation of Rigveda, History of the world and two chief world systems which the committee is now thinking of digitalizing. This is going to be a great news for the readers from all over the world as they would be able to get access of these precious books online. The original Italian manuscript of Dante’s Divine Comedy is also one of the gems which have been preserved in this library. You will also find here a collection of books written in the European languages like Latin, German, Greek and French. You will also find here a rare collection of old coins which date back to the 5th century during the era of Akbar and Shivaji. Various lectures and seminar are also conducted by the committees which are very helpful for the scholars and researchers.

History of the Attraction

Sir James Mackintosh in the year 1804 had started the Asiatic Society of Bombay Library along with the literary society of Bombay. In 1991, a dust free air conditioned laboratory was built in the library in order to conserve old books in the room. Now the library has a wide collection of rare old books in it which makes it even more attractive to the readers.

Getting There

If you are availing the western railway route then the nearest railway station to the library is the Churchgate station. Whereas in the central route CST is the nearest station from where you can easily reach the library.

Things to do and see in and around

The library also houses several manuscripts written in different languages like Persian, Urdu, Sanskrit and Arabic. Many manuscripts reflect fine paintings and calligraphy which are a treat for the history buffs. The library’s collection also includes the very well known Sopara relics that were excavated at Nala Sopara near Mumbai. The stone coffer found in the excavation has been displayed in a vestibule and the relics have been preserved in safe custody. This collection is of the most prized antiques of the library and is huge attraction for the visitors.

Opening/Closing Timings and days

The Asiatic library in Mumbai is open from morning 10:30 to evening 6:30.

The library has an annual membership scheme which can be taken by nay adult members of the society. The members can freely take books from the library foe reading and consultation purposes. Lifetime membership facilities are also offered by the library committee.

Insider’s guide to... Asiatic Society Library

Visit the newly restored town hall and library in fort that looks straight out of a jane austen novel.

When we first visited the Town Hall and Asiatic Society Library, at Horniman Circle, in 2011, there was a pile of newspapers stacked on a stage-like structure at one end of the reading hall. Newspapers as old as the Bombay Chronicle (1910 to 1959) with headlines about Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru were carelessly strewn about. The hall was crowded with metal shelves, with dust-covered books. The library and the reading hall were dingy, with flickering tube lights.

Cut to March 2017. The shelves have been replaced with a series of tables and cane chairs. Cast iron columns with golden scaffolding at the top demarcate the foyer. Brass chandeliers with candle-shaped bulbs hang from the ceiling. The lighting is perfect for a Jane Austen-esque ball. “Without the bookshelves, one can actually see how big the hall is. Also, the weight of the books was damaging the wooden floors, and that made restoration necessary,” says Kruti Garg, an architect who worked on the restoration.

Completed in 1833, the Town Hall was the cultural centre of the fortified city of Bombay. The stage was used for official announcements and live performances for the British officers residing here at the time. The North wing of the structure was used as a library since its completion, and is run by the Asiatic Society of Mumbai (a literary society founded in 1804), and is open only to members. The South wing is used by the State Central Library, an open-to-all library.

Neo-classical: The Asiatic Library and Town Hall are the earliest example of neo-classical architecture in Mumbai. The style is characterised by iron pillars, a triangular roof on the facade, white paint, and a false ceiling in the main foyer. The architecture style was a revival of ancient Greek and Roman structures that are known for its elegance.

Imported iron: The inside the Town Hall are made of cast iron imported from England in the late 1820s. The flooring and the bookshelves inside the Asiatic Library section were built using Burma teak shipped from Myanmar.

Statues inside: In 1856, the then governor of Bombay, Lord Elphinstone, announced that the administration and control of the Bombay presidency was being passed from the East India Company to The Crown from the steps leading to the Town Hall. This was done as a result of the 1857 revolt, considered as a failure on EIC’s part. The Crown stepped in to maintain law and order. Elphinstone’s statue overlooks the reading hall.

Ancient artefacts: The Asiatic Library houses close to 3.5lakh books. The highlights include the original manuscript of Dante’s 14th century poem, Divine Comedy, a 16th century Sanskrit manuscript of the Mahabharata, and coins issued by Shivaji. The digital versions of the manuscripts are online at asiaticsociety.org.in.

Built before electricity: Since the structure was built before electricity had come to the Indian subcontinent, the Town Hall and library were built with skylights. The structure houses three skylights, one each in the North and South wings, and one in the main foyer.

1. The Asiatic Library, situated in South Mumbai , is one of the most famous and oldest libraries of the city dubbed the ‘Maya Nagari’ or ‘City of Dreams’.

2. Invigorating the imagination of millions of readers of all ages, the library is stocked with over 100000 books, and has had a huge impact in the intellectual development of Mumbaikars over several decades.

5. The Asiatic Society of Bombay Library, in addition to the Literary Society of Bombay, was started by Sir James Mackintosh in 1804. One of its unique aspects is the construction of a dust-free air conditioned laboratory in 1991 for the preservation of old and rare books in the library. The collection of rare old books and manuscripts here makes it one of its kinds in the country.

Town Hall-Asiatic Library

The Town Hall-Asiatic Library is a popular architecture of Mumbai. It is the oldest library in Mumbai. Located near the Horniman Circle Town Hall, it is a huge and magnificent building in white texture. With its old parquet floors, spiral staircases, wrought iron loggias, and exquisite marble statues of forgotten city fathers, the colonnaded Town Hall is perhaps the most regal and elegant of Mumbai's heritage buildings. Further the importance of the library not just lies in the number the library accommodates but also for the rich content one can get to read. The Town Hall Library is a grand stay, and honor for the Asiatic Society.

The collection at the Town Hall Asiatic Society has been gradually being replenished by donations from members, starting 25 March 1784, when Henri Richardson gifted the Society, seven Persian manuscripts.

It houses a library with a collection of 800,000 antique volumes. One of them is a priceless first edition copy of Dante's 'Inferno.' There is also an impressive numismatic collection of over 1,000 ancient coins and a rare gold mohur belonging to the Mughal Emperor Akbar. One needs permission to look at these treasures, but the public library is open to all and usually draws a large number of senior citizens who pore over the local newspapers in the fading grandeur of its reading room.

The collection has been grouped into three departments:

(1) Printed Books and Periodicals

(2) Manuscripts and Archives and

(3) Museum Objects

The Printed Books Department further has four sections, viz;

(1) European Languages

(2) Sanskritic & other Modern Indian Languages

(3) Perso-Arabic and Urdu and

(4) Sino-Tibetan and South-Asian Languages

Printed books are there in almost all the major languages of the world. The collection contains the rare illuminated manuscript of Quran and old text of Gulistan and manuscripts of Padshanamah bearing an autograph of Emperor Shahjahan. The rich collection of the library also contains a rare collection of manuscripts and drawings of Surveyor-General Colonel Mackenzie.

Opening hours are 10:30am- 5:30pm from Monday to Saturday.

Mumbai has its own share of heritage and colonial buildings and the Asiatic Society Town Hall is one among them. Given its history and association with the British era, it becomes an important location that should not be missed by anyone visiting Mumbai.

The Asiatic Society of Mumbai Town Hall was opened as a cultural centre for the British officials residing in Bombay. The Town Hall saw all official announcements and live performances being conducted here since its completion in 1833.

In the present day, it houses the Asiatic Society Library, the State Central Library and a Museum, Head Office of Directorate of Libraries Maharashtra State, Additional Controller of Stamps Office, Maharashtra State Women’s Council and a Post Office.

The heritage building of Asiatic Society of Mumbai Town Hall is located in Fort area of Mumbai, overlooking the Horniman Circle and its grand flight of steps has been a prominent location for shooting many Bollywood movies.

History of Asiatic Society Mumbai Town Hall

The conception of the idea of building a Town Hall was first done by the ‘Literary Society of Bombay’ with the intention of conserving literature, artefacts, cultural and oriental art. However, the society could only raise an amount of INR 10,000 through lotteries and funds which was only sufficient for completing the library and the museum. The funds raised were nowhere near to the amount required to build the entire Town Hall. Hence, the construction was put on hold until the society received funding from the government.

It was only in 1833 that the construction of the Town Hall was completed.

History and Formation of Asiatic Society of Mumbai

The Literary Society of Bombay was founded in 1804 by Sir James Mackintosh, one of the most distinguished lawyers and a public figure in England, with the intention of ‘promoting useful knowledge’. The inspiration behind the formation of the Literary Society of Bombay was taken from Sir William Jones who had established the Asiatic Society of Bengal Presidency around two decades earlier.

It was renamed as Bombay Branch of Royal Asiatic Society (BBRAS) in 1826 after its merger with Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland (RAS). Starting 1841, the society opened its memberships to Indians and the same year saw the society publishing its own journal under the title, ‘Journal of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society’.

After India gained independence, around the year 1954, the Bombay Branch of Royal Asiatic Society separated itself from Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland and was rechristened as the Asiatic Society of Bombay. In the year 2002, it changed its name to Asiatic Society of Mumbai after Bombay was renamed as Mumbai.

Architecture of Asiatic Society Mumbai Town Hall

The Asiatic Society Town Hall of Mumbai was designed by one of the finest engineers of Bombay during the time, Colonel Thomas Cowper. The architecture of the neoclassical Town Hall is a mix of elements from both Greek and Roman architectural styles spanning across 200 feet with a height of 100 feet.

While the entrance of the building is led by a flight of 30 steps, the Doric style columns, which are 8 in number, are lined just at the entrance followed by a Grecian portico. The entire structure is constructed out of stones that were shipped in all the way from England while the ancient Burma teak-wood that covers the floors and used for making the bookshelves were brought in from Myanmar. The spiral staircases inside the Town Hall lead to terraces that are lined with wrought iron that were brought from England.

The building also bears a flagpole and the Indian National Flag is hoisted every year on 15th August and 26th January.

Asiatic Society Mumbai Town Hall Museum

There are fine marble statues and portraits of patrons of the Asiatic Society in the hallway and the Durbar Hall of the Town Hall Museum. Among the other artefacts of the museum, there is a huge collection of ancient coins and gold ‘Mohurs’ belonging to the Mughal era. Among the ‘Mohurs’, one of them is actually an exceptional one that once belonged to the Mughal Emperor Akbar.

The Asiatic Society of Mumbai Library at the Town Hall is famous for its antique collection of 8 lakh books, journals, manuscripts, etc. The exceptional collection of the library includes the 16th century Sanskrit manuscript of Mahabharata, the original 14th century manuscript of Dante’s poem, ‘The Divine Comedy’, over 3000 manuscripts of books in Sanskrit, Prakrit, Persian and Urdu. Other treasures of the library include periodicals, maps, prints and painted folios.

The backbone of the foundation of the original Literary Society in 1804 was on sharing useful knowledge with one and all. As of today, there are two libraries in the Town Hall, one in its North wing and second in the South Wing.

The North Wing was used as the library since the completion of construction of the Town Hall and has been being run by the Asiatic Society of Mumbai. This part of the library is accessible only for the members of the society whereas, the South Wing part of the library is run as State Central Library and is open to readers at a minimal subscription rate.

The entire collection of the manuscripts that are housed in the library have been digitised and can be found on the official website of the society.

Entry Fee and Timings of Asiatic Society Mumbai Town Hall

Timings: Asiatic Society of Mumbai Town Hall is open from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM on all days of the week except on Sundays. The town hall remains closed on Sundays.

Entry Fee: There is a subscription fee rather. One needs to gain a resident membership or a reader membership to enter the town hall and access the books in the library. The membership charges are explained below:

The Annual resident member fee is INR 1,500 per person and the Lifetime resident member fee is INR 15,000 per person.

The Reader membership fee is INR 60 per person while the Annual reader membership fee is INR 500 per person.

P. S – Someone who donates an amount of INR 1,50,000 is invited to become the patron life member. Someone who donates an amount as huge as INR 5,00,000 can become a donor life member, provided they are willing to do so.

How to Reach Asiatic Society Mumbai Town Hall

Due to its close proximity to both Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (on the main line) and Churchgate (on the western line) stations, the Asiatic Society Mumbai Town Hall can be reached from both stations. One needs to hire a taxi from both stations to reach the town hall.

Local buses, known as BEST buses are also a good option to reach the town hall. One may board a bus CST bus depot that is right outside the CST railway station.

Alternatively, visitors may also hire a cab from top car rental companies in Mumbai to reach the Town Hall.

Town Hall is perhaps the most regal and elegant of Mumbai's heritage buildings. It houses the Asiatic Society, a library with a collection of 800,000 antique volumes. One of them is a priceless first edition copy of Dante's 'Inferno.' There is also an impressive numismatic collection of over 1,000 ancient coins and a rare gold mohur belonging to the Mughal Emperor Akbar. You need permission to look at these treasures, but the public library is open to all.

A lovely impressive entrance setoff with the steps and Greek style columns. Unfortunately as at 13/1/16 the library is temporarily shut so there's not a lot to see. My Tip: If the library's still shut when you visit pop over the road to the Horniman Circle Gardens.

A nice building to have in South Mumbai- used in most movies as the "stairs outside the courts". Opposite to Horniman Circle.

It is an old relic of the British Raj.With the availability of any kind of information on the net, the library has been rendered not that useful.In fact, this building has been shot in countless Indian movies for the beautiful backdrop it provides.

About Porter Robinson:

At age 18, the North Carolina-based producer and songwriter burst onto the scene with a complex, bombastic brand of electro-house. Asia Announces The Heat Of The Moment Tour in 2024

English rockers Asia are getting the gang back together (with some new faces) for a summer tour of the US and Canada! According to a press release for the tour, OG Asia member Geoff Downes “masterminded” the tour after the successful reunion concert held in memory of the band’s late singer and bassist John Wetton.

“And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much Asia’s music belongs on the stage,” said Downes. “The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling.”

The tour will feature Downes, John Mitchell on guitar, Harry Whitley on vocals and bass, and Virgil Donati on drums. The band will bring along some killer supporting acts as well, including Focus, Curved Air, and Martin Turner.

The Asia 2024 Tour will begin on July 3 at Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The tour will close on July 31 at The Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Researchers, academics and PhD candidates are encouraged to apply for 9 philanthropically funded scholarships and 5 grants which open for applications on Monday 29 April 2024.

‘National Library Scholarships and Grants provide emerging researchers with an opportunity to deepen their research by working with original documents and unique collections. But they also provide an opportunity to be part of the Library's research community, engaging with and learning from other researchers in residence, as well as experienced reference librarians,’ said Kathryn Favelle, Director, Reader Services.

Successful applicants will have special access to the Library’s collection material, supported by expert staff, full office facilities including a designated workstation, and an honorarium to support their residency in Canberra.

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Three-time PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele held off a fast finishing Louis Oosthuizen to win the LIV Golf Adelaide tournament at The Grange Golf Club by one stoke.

The 41-year-old Steele shot a final round 68 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 18-under 198 to earn his first victory since he won his second Safeway Open in 2017 on the PGA Tour.

Steele had a streak of five consecutive birdies early in the round, before some putting jitters appeared in his back nine to open the door for a fast finishing pack of challenges including Oosthuizen, and former previous Masters winners Charl Schwartzel (64) and Jon Rahm (64).

“Yeah, I was telling myself that I knew there was going to be hard moments today regardless of the result and that I just needed to get back in there and start playing with freedom again,” Steele said moments after winning.

“And, and I was able to hit some good shots after that and write the show.”

South Africa’s Oosthuizen shot 65 to finish second at 17-under 199, and had drawn within one stroke of Steele late in Sunday’s final round, only for the American to make some clutch pars in the final holes to clinch victory.

Oosthuizen’s compatriot Schwartzel and Rahm were among a group of five players at 16-under 200, with Joaquin Niemann (66), Andy Ogletree (65) and Dean Burgmester (67) in a tie for third.

Former world No.1 Rahm had an eagle and six birdies in his 8-under 64 but had left too much ground to catch up on Steele on the final day to capture his first title since joining the LlV tour in December.

Last year’s winner Talor Gooch shot 70 and finshed in a tie for 26th at 10-under.

Some of the LIV Golf’s biggest names were also off the pace this week, including Brooks Koepka (nine-under), Dustin Johnson (nine-under), Phil Mickelson (seven-under) and Sergio Garcia (six under).

Australian team Ripper GC, led by local favorite Cameron Smith, with Marc Leishman, Matt Jones and Lucas Herbert, won the teams format on the second playoff hole against the South African-based team, Stingers GC, to the delight of another large and boisterous crowd at The Grange course on Sunday.

The LIV tour remains in the Asia region next week for the May 3-5 Singapore event at the Sentosa Golf Club. Then there’s a month-long break before resuming in Houston from June 7-9.
