Choose the right season:  As mentioned before, the best time to go whale watching in Kona is from mid-January through March.

Go with reputable tour operators:  Just like  snorkeling with manta rays , make sure to opt for whale watching tours with reputable and experienced operators who prioritize the safety and well-being of the whales. Professional guides can provide valuable insights and ensure responsible wildlife viewing.

Go early in the morning if possible:  While whales are active throughout the day, we recommend going early as the ocean is much calmer in the mornings compared to the afternoons, making the ocean more conducive for whale watching. Also, morning tours tend to be less crowded. 

Be patient:  Whales are wild animals, and they don’t always appear when you expect them to, so it’s important to be patient. Keep your eyes open and trust that your guide will take you to the best spots. 

Avoid feeding wildlife:  Never feed whales or any other marine animals. Feeding them can disrupt their natural behaviors and be harmful to their health.

Educate yourself:  Learn about the whales you may encounter, their behaviors, and the importance of  conservation efforts  to protect their habitats.

Learn from my mistakes; I recently went on a  whale watching tour in Kauai  and forgot to take/bring my motion sick medication. Let’s say the tour started fun, but the last hour was brutal.

Dress appropriately:  Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. A light jacket or sweater is also good, as the ocean breeze can be chilly. I usually bring a raincoat on the tour, which has saved me multiple times.

What is the Best Month for Whale Watching on the Big Island?

Various whales can be seen in Kona year round like pilot whales, beaked whales, and melon-headed whales, but none put on quite the show and are as consistent as the seasonal humpback whales.

If you’re looking to go whale watching on the Big Island , you’ll want to do so during the winter months. Whale watching season is between December and March. This is when 10,000-15,000 humpback whales migrate south from feeding in Alaska and they can be seen in great numbers breeding around the Hawaiian Islands.

Whale tours will start when the pods have arrived, usually late November to early December. Tours will stop operating around late March. January and February offer the best months for whale watching as this is peak season.

The reason whale watching cruises do not operate between April and November is that the humpbacks have migrated north to Alaska. The year-round whales cannot give guaranteed sightings.

If you are prone to seasickness (like me), you’ll want to take Dramamine or find another seasickness prevention measure like an anti-nausea wristband .

You’ll of course want to bring a camera/phone , preferably with a waterproof case to protect it from ocean spray while capturing all the amazing marine life and scenery you’ll see on your tour.

Side Note: one of the tours I was on, someone dropped their phone on the boat but it slipped out one of the drain holes and was lost into the ocean. So hold onto yours tight!

And finally, if you have a GoPro or other action camera, consider attaching it to a string and placing it in the water to capture footage of the humpback whales below your boat.

Is Kona Good for Whale Watching?

Yes! You can you see whales in Kona and the North Kohala Coast. These are the best places for Big Island whale watching . This is where the majority of humpbacks can be seen from whale tours or even from land.

The Kona coastline has a dramatic shelf drop due to the volcanic building of the the island. Just a few hundred yards offshore and the ocean is thousands of feet deep, allowing space for the humpbacks to swim very near to shore.

Is it Better to Whale Watch in the Morning or Afternoon on the Big Island, Hawaii?

Whales do not wear wristwatches or have a concept of hours in the day. They are active throughout the day and come out to play any time of their choosing.

That being said, it is argued that mornings are the best time to go whale watching . The ocean is calmer and less choppy, allowing tails and spouts to be more easily spotted. The weather also tends to be nicer in the mornings, before any potential afternoon showers.

This tour starts at 8:00am!

But there is nothing wrong with afternoon whale watching tours. Underwater photographers will prefer afternoon light as the sun is up higher, illuminating more ocean water.

Can I See Whales From Land?

Yes! Humpbacks are so large that they can easily be seen from land all along the Kona coast.

You can DIY a whale watching by parking yourself at a beach and patiently keeping an eye on the horizon for spouts and breaching.

The best places to see them are beaches with the most expansive horizon like Kua Bay , Spencer Beach Park , or Kapaʻa Beach Park. But I have seen them from Ali’i Drive, so there’s just no telling where they’ll make an appearance!

Which Hawaiian Island is the Best for Whale Watching?

Whale watching tours can be found on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. But if you had to choose an island solely for whale watching, Maui would arguably be the best island.

The highest concentration of humpbacks reside in the warm, shallow waters of the Au’au Channel between Maui, Lana’i, and Molokai.

With that being said, whale sightings are abundant on the other Hawaiian Islands and offer just as much of a fantastic whale watching cruise experience.

How Close Can You Get to a Humpback Whale?

As stated by federal law , it is prohibited to stay within 100 yards of a humpback whale in Hawaiian waters. This regulation applies to all boaters, swimmers, surfers, or anyone using the ocean and must be completely followed at all times.

But while you are not allowed to approach the whales and cruise tours do their best to stay that distance away, the whales have no regulations to get close to you ! Often whales will swim under the boats at no fault of the crew’s, so you get to enjoy the majesty of their size anyways.

What Else Will I See on a Whale Watching Tour in Kona?

Aside from humpback whales, you’ll also have the opportunity to see spinner dolphins, green sea turtles, various tropical fishes and of course, unmatched island scenery.

The spinner dolphins are a real treat to see and often put on an acrobatic show for whale watching boats.

Other marine life you might encounter are green sea turtles and schools of tropical fish. There is also the possibility of spotting other types of whale like the pilot whales or beaked whales.

Once in a while, manta rays are another amazing creature that you may spot on your whale watching cruise, though it is rare. The best way to see them is to take a manta ray night snorkel tour out of Kona .

Where does the cruise depart from.

We are located on the Big Island of Hawaii and depart from the Kailua Pier in the heart of Kailua-Kona side approximately six miles south of Keahole Kona Airport.

What time should we arrive?

Boarding is always 30 minutes before departure. We depart on time and cannot hold the vessel for late arrivals.

What if I've never snorkeled before?

We specialize in accommodating those who are new to snorkeling and non-swimmers. We offer "Snorkeling 101" for beginners or those wanting a refresher course. Our location is a protected bay that offers calm pool like conditions and we offer an array of flotation water toys including ski vests, life jackets, noodles, sea view boards, boogie boards and inner tubes. Our Captain's and Crew are First Aid, CPR and Life Guard certified. There are always at least 3 designated Life Guards who are on watch while anyone is in the water.

Do you have prescription masks?

Yes, we offer masks with built in prescription lenses ranging from -1.5 to -7.0 at no additional charge.

Can I bring my own mask and gear?

While we encourage our guests to bring their own mask, fins, and snorkels, we DO NOT allow the use of full-face masks on our excursions aboard the vessel, Kanoa II. During snorkeling activity, the need for more oxygen requires us to breathe faster. With a full-face mask, some of the exhaled carbon dioxide may not fully exit the device, and it is possible to breathe in the contaminated air that has the potential to lead to unconsciousness and fatalities.

Do you offer SNUBA?

Yes & No. We offer Power Diving also known as Hooka diving which lets you enjoy the extended diving ability of SCUBA without heavy tanks or gear through an unlimited air supply that floats on the surface. Hooka diving requires no experience and is ideal for family members over the age of 12 and is available for an additional fee.

Do you offer wetsuits?

Yes, we offer rental wetsuits. Our water temperature ranges from about 78 - 82 degrees. Most of our guests are comfortable with their swim suits or a rash guard to keep them from getting chilled, however, we understand that some get chilled more than others and have these suits available for an additional charge of $10.*

Can you accommodate wheelchairs?

We are 100% wheel chair accessible on our vessel's lower deck. We require notification by phone when guests are traveling with a wheelchair in order to offer our pier parking, as we have only two spaces. If there's space we will note that the guest is using the space and will request that they call the office at boarding time for pier access. The guest will wait at the gate for a crew member to let them onto the pier. They must be traveling with a handicap placard in order to take advantage pier parking. When there's a cruise ship in port we do not have pier parking available.

I have special dietary needs, can you accommodate me?

Yes. All Gluten Free, Vegan, and Vegetarian meal requests must be called into the office with 48 hours notice. We do understand that sometimes you cannot let us know within 48 hours notice; in those cases, call us first before ensuring guests that a special meal option is available. We will always do our best to accommodate last minute requests but it's dependent on what our kitchen team can do with less than 48 hours notice.

Will I get sea sick?

The bigger the boat, the more stable it is. Our vessel is 65' in length with a 30' beam and the largest boat of our kind on the Kona Coast. It's a totally different experience than being on a smaller boat or a raft. If you know you are prone to seasickness, we recommend you take Bonine or Dramamine the night before and another several hours before your cruise. Please read directions to see that you are able to take this medication. We carry this on board however it is best to have it in your system prior to boarding. You more likely to feel better on the lower deck of the vessel as there is less pitch. We also offer complimentary Ginger pills and a Ginger drink which is great for motion sickness and it's all natural.

Do you have bathrooms or showers on board?

Yes, we have three large bathrooms and 2 outdoor fresh water showers on our boat.

Is there any shade on your boat?

Yes, the Kanoa II has a lower and upper deck with plenty of shaded area as well as areas for sunbathing.

What should I bring with me?

For our snorkel dolphin adventure, we recommend you bring your suit, towel, and sunglasses. If you wish to SCUBA, Power Dive or wish to purchase cocktails or retail items such as underwater cameras, we recommend you bring extra cash or credit cards. If you are joining us for our Historical Dinner Cruise, we recommend a lightweight jacket and comfortable flat shoes. We accept all major credit cards.

Should I bring sunscreen?

No, unless you have medical reasons to use a specific brand. Body Glove Cruises is the first boat in the state of Hawaii to offer a "Reef Safe" sunscreen that does not harm the coral reef and stays on your skin and not in our ocean. We have several SPF pump stations onboard for complimentary use.

Can we go ashore during our cruise?

No, in order to protect the sensitive coral reefs, marine shoreline and the safety of our guests no one is allowed to climb onto land. Each vessel will act as your private island allowing you to come and go as you please while you enjoy your day at sea.

Do you provide transportation from my hotel or condo?

Yes, for an additional charge we provide transportation from the Waikoloa area through Jack's Tours. You may find it more economical and convenient to rent a car, otherwise, there are a number of taxi companies that can assist you.

Will we see whales?

The best opportunity to see whales is between late December and late March when the Humpback Whales migrate to Hawaii from the north Pacific. During that time of year, we offer daily Whale Watching cruises and guarantee sightings or come again Free! There are several other species of whales that live in Hawaiian waters year around and are occasionally seen during one of our cruises.

Will we see dolphins?

There is a 90% chance of seeing dolphins all year around from our boat as they enjoy riding our wake. On rare occasions, about once every week and a half they come to visit us at our snorkel location.

What's the difference between snorkeling in the morning versus the afternoon?

Contrary to what you might have heard, the morning does not offer any additional marine life or marine encounters. The same number and types of fish live and swim in the bays all day long. The main difference is you are more likely to have clear skies, less wind and a better chance of seeing dolphins.

Where will I find free parking?

You are welcome to park for free at our Office located one block away from the Kailua Pier. You may park at the Hotel King Kamehameha which is closer however they charge $3 an hour. If you require handicapped parking there are two stalls located in the cul-de-sac in front of the Kailua Pier but come early as they are used frequently.

Is there a reduced rate for those just riding along?

Yes, there are ride along rates on our Deluxe Snorkel BBQ & Dolphin Watch. The price is the same as the child rate. A ride along guest does not get in the water at all. If they change their mind on board an upgrade fee to the adult ticket will be charged. Ride along options are only available for adult guests. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Our large population of humpback whales, ( Kohola  in Hawaiian), have traveled over 3,000 miles, all the way from Alaska, to enjoy the warm and safe waters of the surrounding Hawaiian islands.

Our fun and relaxing whale watch allows you to spend some time out at sea and observe these gentle giants in their element. Visitors often see a huge tail crest in the water and might even catch a whale breaching, or breaking the surface of the water and falling back in with a humongous splash💦! Tour Details

Climb aboard the Big Islands largest boat to set out in search of whales. This boats size allows it to ride comfortably through the water sitting much higher than a standard boat. This gives us a better chance of finding whales who can range over many miles along the Kona coast. Sometimes the whales are shy, so just be patient, and eventually, we’ll spot a spout or a flipper to help lead the way.

Throughout the journey, our helpful guide will tell you all about Kona’s humpback whales, their long, yearly migration down to Hawaii each year, and the important place Kohola’s have in the history of Hawaii.

This whale watching tour is a great opportunity to get some sun, breath in the ocean air, and spend quality time with your family. Kids and adults of all ages are welcome, so bring the whole family! You’ll also want to make sure your camera with a zoom so that when the humpbacks make their appearance you can capture those amazing moments forever.

About Humpback Whales 🐋

A female humpback can weigh up to 40 tons (one ton is 2,000 pounds) and stretch up to 60 feet (18 meters) in length, which is about the size of an American school bus! Humpback whales may be monstrous in size, but they are peaceful creatures. They feed on krill, small fish, and plankton. As you can imagine, these big guys and gals need to eat A LOT to stay full, and a single whale may suck in 3,000 pounds of food a day!

Every year, the Kohola come to visit us in Hawaii, drawn by the warm and relatively shallow water. This is where mothers give birth and start nursing their new calves (who weigh about one ton at birth). Humpback whales are mostly a dark shade of gray with varying amounts of white on their pectoral fins. Their distinct white markings allow us to tell them apart.

One of the things we love most about the humpbacks is that they are a playful bunch. They often slap their fins, tails, and heads on the surface of the water or jump out of the water, known as breaching. Mother whales are also very affectionate with their calves, often touching them with their flippers. Amazingly, male humpback whales sing complex songs that can last up to 20 minutes and can be heard up to 20 miles (30 km) away.

WHO THIS IS FOR

This whale watching Kona tour is for anyone who wants to see awesome nature up close and personal. Oftentimes we will see more than just whales. Although they are the highlights of the day Kona is home to many other ocean critters. Whale watching Kona is not for everyone. Expectant mothers and anyone with back or neck injuries are not permitted to join due to the bouncy nature of the boat.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT WHALE WATCHING KONA?

The humpback whales have spent almost a year and a half of preparation for this visit. Feeding in Alaska to get enough energy to come back and spend months rearing their calves with no access to food. Seeing a Mother and her calf can be a truly magical experience. The calfs will use their mother to rest on the surface. When they get enough energy they will practice breaching (jumping) just like their mom and dad. It’s fun to watch as they awkwardly flop on the surface learning the art of the breach. We may also witness tail slapping, pectoral fin slapping, and echoing spouts from the tremendous amounts of air in their massive lungs. Whale watching Kona can often be more than you may have expected.

The behavior and the groups of whales can vary widely. We carry a hydrophone with us so we can listen in on their conversations. Sometimes whales will float completely neutral at depth facing down for up to 20 minutes! During this time they will sing a song for their family and other whales. Sometimes it can be difficult to spot a whale and even more difficult to know where they will emerge when they decide to come back up again. Whale watching Kona is always full of anticipation. It pays to have good eyesight and lots of patience.

The other place to see humpback whales in the United States is Alaska. Viewing these same whales in Alaska can be a different experience. The weather in Alaska can be more challenging and the ocean conditions may not always be ideal. We are fortunate here in Hawaii to have near-perfect weather and ocean conditions much of the year. Kona is located on the dry leeward side of the Big Island so we often encounter less rain than your typical tropical island making viewing much easier.

While you won’t witness any of the amazing feeding activity like bubble nets that these monstrous creatures are known for you may be lucky enough to see some play or even some mating behaviors. Humpbacks will breach, slap, and snuggle quite often. They are also often accompanied by ‘escorts’ usually Bottlenose Dolphins who are there perhaps to ensure the safety of the newborn calf from predators such as killer whales or Orcas. That’s right we do have Orcas here in Hawaii. They will often come through for short periods of time passing through the area in search of sperm whale and humpback calves or other prey. We have seen some of the most amazing things out on the water. You won’t believe what is possible here on the ocean in paradise 😎.

Where to park in town

Parking is easy and just a short walk from the parking lot area to the Kona pier where the Body Glove ship is docked. The ship, called Kanoa II, is a large-scale catamaran at 65 feet with plenty of seating areas, shady interior sections, cushioned seats and well equipped with sound/TV programs onboard. There is no parking at the pier where the ship is docked, but you can park in the parking lot area of the Body Glove tours office. Guest parking is free at Illima Court Shopping Center, you can check into the office and also get your temperature checked at this time. The walk to the Kona Pier from the parking area is about five minutes from the office.

Getting started and boarding the Konoa II

It’s a quick wait to board the vessel and first thing is to get temperature check and then find a spot for seating. Your breakfast meal comes out quickly and is served along with coffee, juice or soda drinks. While the vessel is still boarding, you can easily walk around the ship and take some fun selfies on deck with views rising just above Kona’s historic district. After the ship sails a full bar set up for bar service is opened for any premium drinks you would like to enjoy on the cruise.

While cruising on board the captain offers some narration about Kona’s history, the beautiful coastline, any of the typical marine life you can encounter. He even scouts and shares any even some whale spotting during seasonal migrations on the islands on the entire cruise. The captain shared some fantastic historic, cultural and marine observations while also offering some safety, snorkeling instructions and other information about the ship and cruising the Kona coastline to the Red hill marine preserve.

The morning cruise is nice and easy with the sun coming up over the mountains over Kona town with the landscape eventually coming into view along the coastline areas. A beautiful rainbow appeared magically from the harbor along Kanoa’s wake making a beautiful morning even more spectacular.

When we finally arrive at the snorkeling spot at Red Hill, all the guests were given an orientation on what safety measures and easy to follow rules are in place to keep everyone in check and easy to follow measures. There were even free snorkeling classes for beginners on the top deck to learn some of the easy and basic techniques of snorkeling. Red Hill is a marine preserve and beautiful, their are few visitors to this area, making it an ideal snorkeling spot away from any crowds.

The crew is active and busy mooring off the snorkel site, helping with with snorkeling beginning sessions, and putting out snorkel gear for you to use along with other water floats and toys to for the guests to use for free. There is also a fun 20-foot waterslide from the 2 nd story straight into the refreshing aqua colored waters below or you can even dive from the diving platform into the bay. There are experienced crew personnel that are also in the water to watch out for guests to make sure they are safe and helping in any situations on the water along with helping guests get in and out of the ship’s main ladders.

The crew set up large inner tubes, Sup board and large blue floating relaxation station were a nice relaxing alternative to just hang out for those that wanted to just take a break from all the snorkeling action and just lounge for a while.

Lunch is served

While out the guests are out in the water enjoying the water and marine life in the snorkel portion, the crew is also prepping up a delicious and easy lunch with chicken and coleslaw with chips. It’s nice to know that all the packaging and utensils used are also bio degradable and easy on the environments which is a nice complement to all the water fun activities. During this time frame and the return, the bar is also open for guests to indulge in some nice tropical drink for the return trip to Kailua harbor.

After a nice snorkel time and lunch break, it’s time to head back to Kona harbor and look out for more marine life, whales or dolphins on the way back into town.

The early afternoon cruise back is smooth and pleasant with everyone relaxed and happy with the snorkel and lunch program. The easy cruise trip is very pleasant with time to enjoy some sun time on deck, enjoying the coastline views and then entering the outskirts of Kona and into the harbor area.
