Plik's Safari

Plik's Safari is a quest in the Fallout 3 add-on Point Lookout . It is also the name of the second area in the coastal grotto – where Plik resides – as it appears on the Pip-Boy .

Quick walkthrough [ ]

• Talk to Plik .
• Pay the high rollers fee.
• Enter the hunting area.
• Survive the onslaught of feral ghouls.
• Return to Plik and collect your prize.

Detailed walkthrough [ ]

When you enter the coastal grotto , continue down the "hallway" and speak to a ghoul named Plik . He offers you a chance to join his small hunting club, but only if you pay the steep entry fee of 1,000 caps. Pay the fee, and ask to join in the next safari. Enter the door behind Plik, and meet your colleagues for this hunting excursion, Jacob Humboldt and Rip Smithy . When you are all set to begin the hunt, flip the switch on the block in the center of the room.

You'll have to fight several waves of leveled feral ghouls , ranging from swamp ghouls to glowing ones . Jacob and Rip are hardly worthy allies, and will usually perish during the onslaught. Use anything at your disposal to live through the obscene amount of enemies, whether it be traps, sheer firepower or a combination of both. After surviving return to Plik and collect your prize.

Quest stages [ ]

• The Ghoul Ecology perk can be obtained by reading Plik's journal which you can find on a desk in his room.
• If you put on the ghoul mask, the ghouls don't attack Jacob Humboldt or Rip Smithy and mines will not detonate until you take off the mask.
• If you kill Plik before triggering the quest he will not have the The Dismemberer . Load the auto-save at the front door to fix this.
• If you equip (reverse-pickpocket) the two fellow hunters with high level weapons and armor, they will last a little longer and actually manage to kill a few ghouls (they still cannot survive on their own without the player's help). Non-player characters actually use chems, so if you put stimpaks or Buffout on them, they will sometimes use them.
• If Jacob Humboldt and/or Rip Smithy do survive, they will disappear upon exiting the safari.
• The safari is repeatable every few days. Repeating the safari costs 500 caps and no reward other than the minor loot the ghouls have and the experience points.
• Disarm and re-arm the bear traps (there are four) for a little experience before the safari begins. You also get experience for any ghoul deaths they might cause.

Background [ ]

A jovial host of his prestigious hunting club for society's richest (or most bored) clientèle, Plik has witnessed the spread of feral ghouls in the area, and seeks to limit this encroachment while attempting an enterprising scheme in the process. [Non-game 1]

Plik runs a little hunting club out of the coastal grotto , but it is "strictly for high-rollers." It appears Plik has a scientific background and has taken extensive notes on the anatomy of feral ghouls, referenced in his journal which will grant the Ghoul Ecology perk upon reading.

• Plik's Safari : If one decides to join his club by paying the 1,000 cap entry fee, they can go on his safari. If he is kept alive, they may go on his safari once a day for 500 caps.

Effects of player's actions [ ]

• When first meeting Plik, he will greet the Lone Wanderer and ask if they want to join his safari for a fee of 1,000 caps.

Inventory [ ]

• With a high Sneak skill, one can pickpocket Plik for the 800 caps he initially carries and after paying his 1,000 cap fee, one can pickpocket the caps back without any change in Karma.
• After successfully participating in Plik's Safari and speaking with him again, the Lone Wanderer will receive a unique axe called the Dismemberer .
• Plik is one of the few ghouls who have a different voice from most of the other ghoul population.
• He will respawn if killed.
• He will refer to the player character as "sir" regardless of gender.
• Although he can be enslaved, he has no voiced lines during the exchange, only subtitles.

Behind the scenes [ ]

Plik and his safari were described by developer Joel Burgess as his "pet project." Voice actor Jeff Baker , who also portrayed Desmond Lockheart , was originally supposed to voice Plik and put on a Southern accent; in the game files, Plik shares a voice type with Desmond. However, Plik's script never made its way into the voice recording session with Baker, and the mistake was not realized until long after the session was concluded. As such, Burgess simply recorded Plik's voiceover himself. Burgess self-deprecatingly joked that Plik's voiceover is him doing his "best impression of Grover wishing he had Robitussin ." Joel Burgess : "Yeah, yeah, this is... for better or worse, this is all me. I really wanted to do this, this was a little bit of a pet project for me on the side. So I did all the scripting and set up the cell, but... oh Christ, this line... so yeah, I wrote this character. And I remember like, we were debating whether or not we were gonna do it or if we could support it and this, that, and the other thing. And so it's like a little bit of an open question. Y'know, again, it was a short project, we have this thing in, and we get to the voice sessions. And the voice actor comes into studio and is sitting with the audio engineer and the voice director and, y'know, does all the lines for Desmond, or basically he comes in and does 'ghoul' voice type. And Plik was originally meant to be voiced by the same actor. A lot of times during direction you'll give the actors like, 'hey, just like, do this character with a Southern accent.' So even though it's the same voice type, they'll put in an inflection on it. So all of Plik's lines were on a few sheets of the script, and those sheets just like... didn't make it into the booth. So like, the day wraps up and the voice recording is finished, and y'know, the actor goes about their life. And we get the VO lines back, and it's like, 'welp, we don't have anything for Plik and we don't have pickups.' Right? Pickups are the term for when you have a voice actor come back. So I went in the booth and it's... awful. Like, the original lines for this are me just doing my best impression of Grover wishing he had Robitussin. It's just bad, bad ghoul voice acting. But hey, it made it in and I'm happy it's there."
