Fiji Airways Platinum Partner for 2023 South Pacific Tourism Exchange
The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) has today announced Fiji’s national airline Fiji Airways as its Platinum Partner for the 2023 South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE), which will be held at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Christchurch from 12-13 May.
The value of Fiji Airway’s sponsorship for the event is over $60,000 in kind through the provision of free tickets in transporting SPTE media and trade representatives and tourism partners to and from the venue
SPTO CEO Christopher Cocker welcomed the generous contribution by Fiji Airways and added that it would go a long way in helping revive tourism in the Pacific. He also mentioned that SPTE was returning after a four-year hiatus, due to COVID-19.
The last SPTE was held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2019 and had more than 200 participants comprising sellers from across the Pacific and buyers from Australia, New Zealand, USA, India, China, France, Italy, Russia, Netherlands, and Spain to name a few.
“SPTO is delighted to be working with Fiji Airways. SPTE provides the perfect platform for Fiji Airways to further strengthen its presence and key relationships across our Pacific Island membership. We are looking forward to presenting a platform for major global tourism operators to connect with new and existing markets that showcase the best of what the Pacific has to offer.
Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Andre Viljoen mentioned they were delighted to partner with SPTO for the 2023 SPTE in Christchurch.

Fiji Tourism Investment Summit 2023
Fiji has enjoyed extraordinary growth since reopening its borders in December 2021 following the COVID-19 hiatus. As of end of 2022, a total of 636,312 tourists had visited Fiji, which is well above initial forecasts. By 2024, the tourism sector is projected to grow to a FJ$3 billion industry as markets in Asia open up and new markets, including Canada, come on stream. It is anticipated that by the end of 2024, there will be up to 1 million tourists visiting Fiji. As a result, Fiji needs more resort and hotel investments to keep up with demand and take advantage of the increased interest in the country. Investment Fiji in conjunction with Tourism Fiji is hosting the Fiji Tourism Investment Summit 2023, whereby 50 key investors will be invited to Fiji to participate in a 3-day summit featuring the opportunities for investment in Fiji’s tourism sector. The Summit will bring together representatives from Fiji’s tourism industry, government, investment, and real estate industries to provide investors with the very latest information on what government incentives exist, where the current opportunities are, the gaps that exist and where growth will come from in the tourism sector. This would be achieved through a series of presentations, panel discussions, breakout sessions and familiarization trips.

Fiji's tourism-fuelled 2023 economic rebound: ANZ Research Share
November 2, 2023 4:41 pm
[Source: Supplied]
Fiji is backing up its strong economic rebound of last year with another solid performance in 2023 says ANZ’s International Economist Kishti Sen.
In ANZ’s latest research on Fiji titles ‘Balancing the Economy’ , Sen says visitor arrivals, the cornerstone of Fiji’s economy, are tracking above 2019 levels and projected to reach 940,000 for the first time this year.
Australian leisure travellers are leading the charge, with 450,000 arrivals expected in 2023.
If realised, Sen states this will be 22.6% higher than the previous record reached in 2019.
New Zealand tourists for the first nine months of this year totalled 167,098 and he says that figure too is expected to surpass the previous record of 205,998 achieved in 2019.
Sen says while international tourism generates foreign currency revenue and supports Fiji’s balance of payments, its real contribution comes from the number of jobs it supports and sustains.
With the return of inbound demand in 2022, after the pandemic-induced border shutdowns of 2020 and 2021, the tourism economy is at full employment, and total formal-sector wage and salary earner numbers are sitting at 125% of pre-pandemic levels.
The strong bounce in jobs, wage increases as well as another record year for private money transfers from abroad are together supporting household income and consumer demand.
Sen says although the latter is offset somewhat by the increase in the rate of Value Added Tax to 15% from 9% from August 1st and still elevated price inflation for essential consumer goods.
Business investment has been bumping around at the bottom of the cycle, but the Government is running an expansionary budget that is providing stimulus to the economy.
All in all, Sen says their research is predicting GDP to grow by 5.8% in 2023.

Tourism Fiji to host Tourism Expo in May
Tourism Fiji will be hosting its eighth Fijian Tourism Expo from 11 – 13 May 2022, the first face-to-face tourism event being hosted in Fiji since 2019, and the largest event since 2020 involving international guests. Dubbed Tourism Fiji’s premier event for the year, the expo is the perfect opportunity to showcase the breadth and depth of Fiji’s tourism offerings and experiences to international buyers, trade partners and media, and is a significant step forward in the reopening of Fiji to international tourists once more. Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill said, “We’re so thrilled to be hosting our first in-person FTE since 2019 and can’t wait to showcase the very best of Fiji to our key partners. Our main objective for hosting the event is not only to give us the opportunity to build on our great reopening but to also open new markets and foster new partnerships/businesses while strengthening existing ones.” The annual expo includes scheduled appointments between international buyers & media to engage with Fiji’s Tourism Industry. Tourism Fiji Chief Operations Officer, James Pridgeon said this year’s event will be a little different than normal. “As Fiji builds back once again, we are so encouraged that this FTE we will be able to welcome 87 exhibitors, seven international media and 86 international buyers that have confirmed thus far. We will be working closely with industry to allow them a chance to be part of the expo by hosting famils, B2B meetings and presentations. This event is about welcoming tourists once again and really signalling to the tourism trade worldwide that Fiji is back,” Mr Pridgeon explained. The Fijian Tourism Expo will be held at the Denarau Island Conference Centre at the Sheraton Fiji Resort & Spa from 11 – 13 May.

2023 ANZ Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards | And the winners take it all
Listen to this article:
A night of fun, glamour, acknowledgement, appreciation and success! Such was the epitome of the successful culmination of the 2023 ANZ Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards celebration.
The Denarau Island Convention Centre played host to 700 tourism stakeholders who converged for the annual affair that acknowledged their collective efforts and unwavering dedication that have propelled Fiji’s tourism to where it is today.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka said this year’s theme “Celebrating Tourism Success,” reflected the triumphs, achievements and advancements of the industry and resonated deeply with stakeholders’ dedication to achieving greater tourism success.
“Your success is our success… I shared this before and I will say it again,” Mr Gavoka said.
“When the tourism industry does well, so does the economy and other sectors.
“And when the economy prospers, so do the lives and livelihoods of our people and communities.”
On the night of celebration, Mr Gavoka informed operators and stakeholders that when visitors spend money on hotels, meals, souvenirs and attractions, it stimulates demand in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and construction.
He said such vital movement allowed local businesses to flourish, infrastructure improves, and communities prosper.
The deputy PM also paid tribute to two tourism icons whose contributions have left a lasting impact on the growth of the local hospitality industry.
They were pioneer and visionary leader, the founder of the Tanoa Group and a recipient of the lifetime achievement in excellence award Yanktesh Permal Reddy, known commonly as Y.P. Reddy., and Elenoa Nimacere, former Vinaka Fiji manager who was instrumental in the development of the Yasawa group.
“In 2020, we recorded our sharpest ever economic contraction of 17.0 percent followed by a further decline of 4.9 percent in 2021.
“All of you in this room, went above and beyond in our recovery and in 2023, we estimate an 8.2 per cent growth – meaning our recovery is complete as the economy returns above 2019 levels of GDP by the end of this year.
“We also received a record number of visitors – surpassing 2019 figures by 4 percent – a testament to the indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication of our tourism professionals.”
Significant milestones, the deputy PM said, has been achieved in the industry’s journey to achieve sustainability and equity within the tourism sector.
He said that the culmination of such efforts will be realized with the launch of the Fiji Sustainable Tourism Framework by April.
“This will serve as a guiding beacon for our sustainability endeavors, ensuring that our tourism practices are not only environmentally responsible but also culturally sensitive and socially equitable.
“It is my hope that this policy framework will guide us over the next decade with concrete action items.
“One of these will be to streamline and strengthen the tourism regulatory environment and introduce standards, to uplift the industry.”
Mr Gavoka has also commended the commitment of funds from Rosie Holidays and Ahura Resorts towards the National Cleanup Campaign Fund.
He said he was pleased to see the resolution of the 2023 Fiji Tourism Convention quickly turn into concrete action this year.
He also commended and congratulated the Hall of Fame winners, whose exceptional contributions to our industry are truly commendable.
He shared the introduction of the Hall of Fame shield for resorts and hotels winning three consecutive times is a testament to their excellence.
“Congratulations to all the nominees and winners of the 2023 Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards.
“Your unwavering commitment to excellence and unpa

Fiji Airways Announced as the Platinum Partner for 2024 South Pacific Tourism Exchange
The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) is excited to announce its partnership with Fiji Airways for the 2024 South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE) on the 4th and 5th of May at the Sheraton Resort & Spa, Denarau in Nadi. This collaboration demonstrates Fiji Airways’ dedication to supporting and growing tourism in the Pacific region.
As part of the partnership, Fiji Airways will provide flight support for key trade and media representatives as well as tourism partners to attend the event. This underscores Fiji Airways’ commitment to SPTE 2024’s success and reinforces its position as the premier airline in the Pacific. This is evident from their win of the 2023 Skytrax Best Airline in Australia & the Pacific at the esteemed 2023 World Airline Awards.
In 2023, SPTE was held in Christchurch, New Zealand, attracting sellers from across the Pacific and buyers from key markets worldwide. This year’s event promises to build upon that success, offering a platform for global tourism operators to engage with the diverse offerings of the Pacific region.
SPTO Chief Executive Officer Chris Cocker expressed his appreciation for Fiji Airways’ support, highlighting its vital role in the Pacific’s tourism industry.
“SPTO is thrilled to partner with Fiji Airways. The sponsorship from Fiji Airways holds great promise in elevating our visibility and engagement with travellers across key markets. SPTE offers an excellent opportunity for Fiji Airways to enhance its presence and key connections across our Pacific Island membership. We look forward to presenting the best of the Pacific and cultivating significant relationships among industry players,” Mr Cocker said.
Fiji Airways’ Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr Andre Viljoen, echoed this sentiment, affirming the airline’s dedication to supporting the region’s tourism recovery efforts.
“As the primary airline connecting Fiji and the Pacific to the world, we are proud to support SPTE 2024. Sustainable travel has never been more crucial, and we are committed to sharing the Pacific Island’s charm and warmth with audiences worldwide. This partnership with SPTO embodies our common goal of fostering a strong, united tourism industry”.

Lao Economic Growth Remains Subdued Says World Bank Report
Economic growth in the Lao PDR is estimated to have been below 2019 levels in 2023 and is forecast to remain below that pace in 2024, weighed down by economic instability, low worker skills, out-migration of labor, and a challenging business environment, the World Bank said in a report released on Tuesday.
Lao GDP is estimated to have grown 3.7% in 2023, with positive contributions from tourism, transport, logistics, and mining, according to the Lao Economic Monitor for April 2024, Accelerating Reforms for Growth , Foreign investment increased substantially, mainly in electricity and mining, while improved revenue collection has offset increased public spending. In 2019, growth stood at 5.5%.
Continued high inflation, caused by the falling value of the kip, means that consumption remains constrained. In 2023, the annual average official kip/US dollar exchange rate weakened by 31%. Given Laos’ high import dependence, depreciation brings changes in domestic prices. Headline inflation averaged 31% over 2023 and remains high, with food, transport, hotel, and restaurant price increases the main contributors.
“ While average household incomes improved in 2023, about a third of Lao households, especially low-income families, have seen their purchasing power fall behind inflation ,” said Alex Kremer , World Bank Country Manager for the Lao PDR . “ Our monitoring surveys show over 30% of families have reduced their spending on health and education, while in urban areas where fewer people grow their own food, food security is becoming an increasing problem .”
In 2024, GDP is projected to grow by 4%. Economic activity is expected to benefit from further growth in services, plus investment in the power sector and some special economic zones. However, kip depreciation and high inflation are likely to persist due to a lack of foreign exchange and the need to repay high external debts.
Between 2020 and 2023, about $2 billion (around 15% of GDP at the 2023 rate) of principal and interest payments on debts owed to China was deferred. Nevertheless, debt payments will still require large amounts of foreign currency, and access to international capital markets has deteriorated with loss of access to the Thai bond market. Recent regulations requiring the repatriation and conversion of export proceeds from mining, power, agriculture, and services may bring more foreign currency into the economy in the short-run but could be counter-productive if they deter future investment.
The report recommends restoring macroeconomic stability through a strong commitment to five critical reform areas: debt management, revenue mobilization, public investment management, financial sector stability, and business environment reforms. Recent revenue reforms will help balance finances, but the overall pace of reform needs to accelerate.
This edition of the Monitor includes a thematic section on education, which finds that public education funding has fallen, with the 2023 budget allocation for education 38% down from the 2013 figure in real terms. While strong human capital and education are fundamental to putting Laos on a sustainable high-growth trajectory, primary education is no longer universal across the country: an increasing number of children are dropping out and those who stay are not learning.
This has follow-on effects for subsequent education levels. Most Lao secondary students score below expected levels, especially in mathematics and science. If learning outcomes are to improve, the education sector needs urgent re-prioritization and increased budget allocation.
