The Turnblad Mansion

grand hall tours

The American Swedish Institute is currently in a campaign to rehabilitate the interiors and exteriors of the Mansion and Carriage House , and to reimagine the Mansion’s interior spaces for programs, gatherings and world-class exhibitions.

Learn more about this critical project.

Lovingly dubbed the “Castle,” the Turnblad Mansion on the American Swedish Institute campus is stylistically unique and massive in scale. Gazing up at its impressive structure, the towering turret and steep-pitched roof are reminiscent of French Renaissance architecture known as châteauesque . The hand-carved gargoyles, decorative lions and the Mansion’s storied façade are carved out of Indiana limestone embedded with million-year-old fossils, which was mined from the same quarry as stone used in the Empire State Building.

The Mansion was built between 1904 and 1908, designed by Minneapolis architects Christopher Boehme and Victor Cordella – no doubt with input from their clients, the Turnblad Family . The Turnblad Mansion is one of only eight remaining structures built during Park Avenue’s heyday from 1885 to 1921 during a time when the street was known as Minneapolis’ Golden Mile.

The Mansion was a labor of love, and the work of master craftsmen can be found both in the exterior stone and in the woodwork and decorative plaster throughout the interior. The Mansion features 33 rooms; each room with a distinct style and décor—from Gustavian to Moorish. There are 11 tile stoves, or kakelugnar , imported from Sweden. The painted glass Visby Window oversees the Grand Hall: both unique and a vital connection to Swedish culture, for the Turnblad family a century ago and for visitors today.

The Turnblads only lived in the residence for a short time. In fact, it is believed that the house was never fully furnished. In 1929, it was donated to become what is now ASI and has created its own legacy as a gathering place and cultural center for the Swedish American community and local neighborhood.

“I had this idea in mind when I first began to build the home. I wanted it to endure to a hundred thousand years.”

The Turnblad Mansion was designated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and for Heritage Preservation by the City of Minneapolis in 1974, and the journey into what it takes to preserve this historic place is ongoing. ASI continues to demonstrate its commitment to preserving the Mansion and uplifting its cultural and historical significance for future generations through ongoing restoration and preservation projects. Over the last two decades alone, ASI and the community have together contributed more than $13 million to projects that include restoration of the historic kitchen, repairs to the Mansion roof, stonework and masonry projects, repairs to the solarium, and others.

ASI has received numerous awards for this diligent attention including a 2015 Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums Buildy Award, 2014 Minnesota Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects Honor Award, 2013 Finance & Commerce Magazine Top Projects of 2012 award, and 2011 Partners in Preservation Award for the Turnblad Mansion historic kitchen.

Today, the Turnblad Mansion is joined on ASI’s campus by the Nelson Cultural Center, a modern structure completed in 2012 that features expanded gallery, programming, event, retail and café spaces. Together, these buildings offer visitors to ASI an experience that weaves the past with the present, the contemporary with the historic.  Efforts today will ensure both buildings remain for generations to come.

We are open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and until 7 p.m. on Thursday. -->

The spectacular Grand Hall offers an introduction to the history, cultures and beliefs of the First Peoples of Canada’s Pacific Coast. With its curving, six-storey window wall and unrivalled view of Parliament Hill, the Grand Hall is one of the country’s most impressive indoor public spaces and the Museum’s architectural centrepiece.

Visitors will discover six iconic Native houses connected by a Pacific Coast shoreline and boardwalk, magnificent totem poles, the original plaster pattern for Spirit of Haida Gwaii by celebrated Haida artist Bill Reid, and Raven Bringing Light to the World , a gold-on-bronze sculpture by Robert Davidson.

Behind the house facades and boardwalk are two exhibitions: First Peoples of the Northwest Coast and From Time Immemorial – Tsimshian Prehistory .

First Peoples of the Northwest Coast offers a fascinating look at this renowned culture — a culture that is firmly rooted in history, but continues to thrive and evolve in the 21st century. Recently redesigned, the exhibition is organized by themes and offers a selection of historic and contemporary artifacts from the Museum’s pre-eminent collection.

From Time Immemorial – Tsimshian Prehistory reproduces the archaeological excavations carried out from 1966 to 1978 in the Prince Rupert region of British Columbia. In an ancient forest setting, the exhibition presents the way of life of the Tsimshian nation in prehistoric times and the role of the archaeologist in bringing the past to light.

Guests of the Flaglers entered Whitehall through large bronze doors decorated with lions' heads and flanked by uniformed young doormen on duty 24 hours a day. Once inside, guests found themselves in a massive room complete with a grand double staircase leading to the second floor. At the time, it was customary for a home's architect to design the entryway and the grand staircase, leaving the look of all other rooms to an interior design firm. This was the case at Whitehall. Carrère and Hastings designed the entryway to be the largest and grandest of any room in a private home built during the Gilded Age. To the visitor, the Grand Hall might seem smaller than its impressive 5,000 square feet. But, this is exactly what Flagler intended when he asked Carrère and Hastings to drop the ceiling eight feet below what was originally designed in order to give the room a more intimate feel. Seven varieties of marble were used in creating the floor, walls, stairs, furniture, and sculpture for the Grand Hall. The deep green marble table in the south end of the Grand Hall was created especially for this room by Pottier and Stymus of verdestella marble from Russia. Atop this table sits a bust of Caesar Augustus, a nineteenth-century copy of an original full-size bronze sculpture. The original statue was made to celebrate Caesar’s victory over the Parthians in 20 BC and the breastplate identifies Caesar with Apollo (the patron of the Muses), his sister Diana, and Aurora and Luna. The selection of this bust to adorn the Grand Hall was intentional, for it signaled the nineteenth-century American interest in ancient Rome as a prototype for the great society America seemed to be becoming. Gilded Age individuals, such as Henry Flagler, saw America as the natural culmination of an evolving Western civilization. The Grand Hall’s ceiling is highly decorated with plaster figures and objects. The ceiling’s central dome depicts Pythia, the priestess of the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi. The painting was done on canvas and then fitted into the ceiling space. Two  paintings flank the central dome, depicting Aurora (morning) to the north and Luna (evening) to the south. Near the southern alcove is a rosewood and bronze clock with cabinetry made by François Linke.  The Louis XV-style clock was made by Linke and shown at the 1900 Paris Exposition. An elaborate clock like this seemed the perfect union of beauty and precision technology.

Behind the green marble table is a large cassone, or hope chest, incorporating a panel painting of the Adimari family wedding. This cassone is nearly identical to the one that originally graced the Grand Hall, but was unfortunately destroyed some time after Whitehall became a hotel. Both the cassone originally in the Grand Hall and the one there now, are nineteenth-century reproductions featuring a painting from an Italian Renaissance cassone panel in the collection of the Galleria Accademia in Florence, Italy, and brought to the attention of Americans by art historian Bernard Berenson in the nineteenth century.

At opposite ends of the Grand Hall are portraits of Henry Flagler, painted in 1899, and his granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews, the founder of the Flagler Museum, painted at the Museum in 1964.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

The Little Grand Market scheduled to open this summer at Grandview Crossing

by Chris Towle

Little Grand Market is scheduled to open in August 2024, and will provide food, drinks and great views in a 22,000-square-foot space. (Meyers & Associates)

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Thrive Companies announced the expected grand opening of The Little Grand Market community food hall on Monday.

The market is scheduled to open at the heart of Grandview Crossing in the 60-acre mixed-use development in August.

ALSO | Ohio Stadium guided tours now available

It will feature 12 carefully curated chef partners with a wide range of options from savory, sweet, traditional, and exotic.

The market will be over 22,000 square feet with each vendor stall averaging close to 300 square feet, according to the media release from Inspire PR Group .

"When conceptualizing The Little Grand Market, we were deliberate about creating a social energy hub with good food, great drink and an amazing park for Grandview Crossing residents, retail partners and the greater Columbus community,” said Kevin Zeppernick, CEO of Thrive Companies.

A three-acre park next to The Little Grand Market allows visitors to enjoy their food and drinks inside or outdoors.

Guests can also enjoy a drink at 'The Little Grand Bar' or at 'Bada Bean' coffee shop while overlooking the park.

There is also a 3,500-square-foot space available for a full-service restaurant, according to the release.

The Little Grand Market is expected to announce its chef partners throughout the next few weeks.

After purpose-driven renovations, Bridgewater church given new life

The gathering will perform live music at the open house.

grand hall tours

BRIDGEWATER ― People have noticed the stunning transformation outside the former Bridgewater United Methodist Church.

Time-faded yellow bricks are now painted an attractive and soothing blue-gray "morning fog" color, as black window trim provides a sharp, aesthetically pleasing contrast.

Passersby have wondered aloud, what's going on inside.

Is a new church arising? Is someone building more condos in Bridgewater? Or a brewery?

Far from it.

After 16 months of painstaking, purpose-driven work, owner Anthony Ellis is ready to invite the public inside to see what he's planning.

On May 4, Ellis hosts an open house at His Place, a Christian fellowship hall that's slowly, steadily taking shape.

"We invite you to stand with us as we strive to create a brighter future for those in our community," Ellis wrote on the flier for the 4 p.m. His Place event that will include food, fellowship and a live performance by local Christian band The Gathering.

Ellis will offer tours of the 117-year-old structure he and his helpers extensively renovated.

His Place/His calling

Ellis makes it clear; he felt a God-given calling to transform the idle church building that went up for sale in 2021, at one point purchased and owned temporarily by a developer who had planned to tear it down to put up more river-view condos.

"And then it went back on the market," said Ellis, who envisioned a different purpose, one he acknowledges he hasn't fleshed out fully yet, except he believes the structure needs to be some sort of Christian-minded fellowship hall.

The symbolically chosen name: His Place.

"It's going to be a learning process," Ellis, an Army veteran stationed in the Iraq War in 2004-05, said. "I've been a contractor going on 16 years and this is a step for me, and faith."

He bought the brick structure in December 2022, and within a few days began tackling the first major challenge, repairing a leaky roof. Replastering the walls and exposing stately beams followed.

"This place was torn up. Railings were missing, doors were missing. It had been ready for demo," he said.

For the next year, the 40-year-old New Brighton native set aside his contracting business and focused on restoring the church structure to its past glory.

Ellis removed two drop ceilings to give a grander view of the still-functioning bell tower. A dozen stained-glass windows carefully were re-shined, and the former pulpit area was recast as a stage where Christian music bands could perform.

Ellis took century-old wood he'd been saving for just the right occasion, using his cutting and lacquering skills to create tables and shelves. He repurposed old doors as restroom stalls in lavatories that are an eye-pleasing mix of modern and vintage.

He set up tables and chairs offering ample seating for group meetings. There's equally sizable space for food prep.

To imbibe the mission behind it all, a local artist has painted several of the interior walls to show both Bridgewater scenes, including a depiction of the church's original look, and Biblical scenes, such as the Sermon on The Mount, Jesus Calming the Storm, and the Calvary.

On the upstairs floor, Ellis crafted a primary bedroom, bedrooms for his daughters, a parental suite and a guest room.

Daughters Lucia and Mia enjoy riding bikes in Bridgewater, playing in the neighborhood park and visiting Bruster's Real Ice Cream.

"It's been quite a personal journey; a family journey," Ellis, who is divorced, said.

His vision and purpose propel him.

"It's important to be able to share the Gospel in a different way and just bring people together. We are so divided," he said. "So divided. Everybody over everything. You name it. Race, religion, creed, politics, vaccine or not. And it's getting crazier by the day."

In the building's cavernous basement lie more restroom facilities, vast storage space and an area with tables, chairs and a kitchen area for which he has a longer-term vision. It just needs some Biblical scenes or Scripture painted on the walls, and some kitchen equipment, Ellis said.

"I could see this as like a Christian bar or coffee shop. Alcohol-free. I want the whole place to be that," Ellis said. "I've been sober for quite some time. I know a lot of people who need a place like that. I'm not taking business from any of these (Bridgewater taverns), I want a different crowd."

Again, that's part of the vision that still would need to come more fully in focus.

For now, starting with the open house − not a grand opening − for people to see his progress and the building's potential, while welcoming any donations or tangible support.

"Why I wanted to have this in May was to get rid of all the rumors," Ellis said. "(People have asked) 'What's it going to be? What are you doing? Who's going to be the pastor? Is it going to be a brewery? Is it going to be this or that?'

"It's my house right now," he said. "God blessed me with a beautiful home down by the river. And I want to be able to share it."

He's sensed divine intervention amid his renovation journey.

"God's direction is guiding me," Ellis said.

For months, he kept looking at a section of interior wall trim where a big chunk was missing, pondering how to fix it. Then someone donated an old historical photo of Bridgewater that filled in that missing chunk perfectly.

"I didn't even have to cut it," he said. "Just the people, the timing, the materials have been right there when I need them."

Beaver County's best-known commercial painter, rocker Rick Granati, volunteered to help paint some of the exterior using his bucket truck to reach some high spots.

"And we had help and volunteers throughout," Ellis said.

Bridgewater resident Roger Morrow kept noticing the painting and renovation work, and with curiosity rising popped by and introduced himself to Ellis, who laid out his vision for a Christian fellowship gathering place. Now Morrow is among those volunteers helping there with administrative work.

"It's just like a giant canvas. And everyone who comes in here says, 'Hey, can my group do this? And 'can we help with that?'" Morrow said. "This is literally going to be a community center created by the community under the umbrella of Anthony's vision."
