Airbnb is rolling out its guest travel insurance in the US, the UK, and 8 countries of the European Union . The company had been working on it for at least two years. Unlike its Aircover for guests program, which is free, this travel insurance is a paid product . Travelers can purchase it while completing their booking. Big insurance company names are behind the insurance program (e.g. Europ Assistance, Generali, AON). Let’s discover what Airbnb’s travel insurance exactly covers, when it can be used, and wha t impact it can have on existing host cancelation policies . We’ll also see why it is difficult to roll out a travel insurance offering globally.  

Airbnb is not the first vacation rental listing platform to be offering travel insurance to its guests. Vrbo has been selling travel insurance products in the US created by Generali (formerly CSA Travel Protection) for years. At a time when online travel agents like Hopper are promising incremental revenues from FinTech products to their investors, it is also good for Airbnb to announce a way to make money on insurance products, after giving away host insurance liability for free, for instance.

Where is Airbnb’s travel insurance available?

Airbnb is launching its guest travel insurance in the following countries:

  • the Netherlands,
  • Austria, 

Airbnb is planning on making its travel insurance available to guests in other countries in the future. Our guess is that Airbnb will then go after other markets in the European Union, such as France, as it already has set some insurance operations within the EU. Then, other countries with similar insurance industry setups such as Australia come could.

Rolling out insurance is really a matter of going at it country by country and even state by state in the US. Insurance regulations are very strong and differ from one country to another in the EU and one state to another in the US.  

For countries in South America, parts of Asia, and Africa, things will probably take more time.

What does the Airbnb travel insurance cover and when can a guest make a claim? Disover this trip cancellation insurance which does not infringe existing host cancellation policies.

What the airbnb travel covers, for instance, in the us:.

In the US, the Airbnb travel insurance is powered by the Generali insurance company. The plan includes:

  • Trip cancellation:  Get reimbursed for up to 100% of your non-refunded Airbnb reservation cost if you cancel for a covered reason, such as: iIllness or injury, flight cancellations and delays due to weather, or mandatory evacuations due to weather.
  • Travel delay:  Get reimbursed for certain additional expenses you incur because your trip is delayed for 12 hours or more for a covered reason, such as: flight delays, passport theft, or adverse weather.
  • Medical:  Get reimbursed for doctor-ordered medical services during your trip, such as: hospital services, ambulance services, and prescription medicines.
  • Baggage:  Get reimbursed for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage, lost, stolen, or damaged travel documents, and unauthorized use of credit cards during your trip.

The plan also comes with other coverages and perks, like 24/7 emergency and travel assistance services. With just a phone call, you can get help with anything from a medical referral to a restaurant recommendation.

What does the Airbnb travel insurance mean for a host?

Airbnb’s travel insurance for guests promises a payment for up to 100% of their non-refunded Airbnb reservation costs if their trip is impacted by specific events, such as

  • bad weather,
  • stolen travel documents,
  • or serious illness.

Airbnb’s travel insurance is more like a trip cancellation insurance that works under certain conditions than a cancel-for-any reason insurance product.

Basically, if a traveler has to cancel their trip:

  • The existing host cancellation policy will apply.
  • Let’s take the example of a booking made under the Airbnb Strict cancellation policy . It allows guests to receive a full refund if they cancel within 48 hours of booking and at least 14 days before a listing’s check-in time. In the event of a cancellation within 48 hours, the guest is only entitled to a 50% refund, regardless of how far out the check-in date is. S o, the host only pays back 50% of the Airbnb reservation cost.
  • Now, if specific events listed and covered by the Airbnb travel insurance occur, then travel insurance can refund up to the remaining 50% .
  • Note that, unlike with Aircover, the insurance provider will not seek to recover any money from the Host if a guest files a travel insurance claim

What exactly is the “Airbnb booking cost” that is covered?

To our understanding, the Airbnb booking cost is what the guest pays to the host. It may or may not include Airbnb’s service fee. Depending on the existing host cancellation policy, the travel insurance will pay the guest the part of the booking cost that the host got to keep as per the cancellation policy.

For example, if the Host refunds 50% of the Airbnb reservation cost based on their cancellation policy, travel insurance can refund up to the remaining 50% if the guest cancels for a covered reason.

How about COVID-19?

At Airbnb, for any booking made on or after May 31, 2022, being sick with COVID-19 will no longer be considered an extenuating circumstance. This is also the case on most online travel platforms such as Booking.com and Vrbo?

According to Airbnb, its guest travel insurance “could” cover costs related to COVID as it can cover “serious illness”: “If a guest purchases travel insurance, they could be covered should they become sick with COVID-19 (as diagnosed by a licensed doctor) and other policy terms are met. So, it may depend on where the guest booking is from, among other things.

If they are worried about having to cancel a trip due to COVID-related reasons,  Airbnb recommends travelers buy travel insurance. So, it would make sense that Airbnb started selling such an insurance product to its guests.

How can you buy guest travel insurance on Airbnb?

Guests get the option to purchase travel insurance during the booking process. The Airbnb guest travel insurance cannot be bought separately or after the booking has been made.

  • During booking, guests are given the option to add travel insurance.
  • Dedicated screens provide details about what the policy covers and key exclusions.
  • If they’re interested, guests simply add travel insurance to their booking and check out.
  • The guest’s travel insurance premium is a percentage of their total trip cost and will appear as a line item at checkout. 
  • After completing their reservation, guests who added travel insurance will receive an email confirmation with their policy’s details and information about how to file a claim

How much does the Airbnb guest travel insurance cost?

The cost of Airbnb’s travel insurance is not a fixed cost. It varies according to the total trip cost (as well as the location of the guest making the booking). The guest’s travel insurance premium is a percentage of their total trip cost and will appear as a line item at checkout. 

What are the differences between Aircover for guests (free) vs Airbnb travel insurance (paid)?

So here are the main differences with Aircover for guests:

  • Aircover for guests is free, while Airbnb’s travel insurance is a paid product.
  • Aircover relies on a set of processes that force hosts to pay back guests in case of major issues (e.g. impossible to check-in, a major listing feature missing such as air conditioning)
  • Airbnb’s travel insurance is underwritten by large insurance companies such as Generali.
  • Aircover for guests is triggered when things do not go well due to issues on the host side, while the guest travel insurance covers trip cancellations due to bad weather or the guest falling sick.
  • While Aircover for guests often gets down to hosts refunding money to guests, Airbnb’s travel insurance is money paid by the insurance company to the guests (no money is retrieved from the host on top of the existing host cancellation policy).

Aircover for guests is a set of protections that rely on hosts refunding money. It is no insurance, unlike the guest travel insurance product being introduced 

Du ring its Summer 2022 Release event , Airbnb announced a program called “Aircover” which offers new booking protections for guests, for free. These are protections, not insurance. Basically, they rely on Airbnb’s ability to get money back from the host to the guest in case of a substantial breach in what the guest was expecting (e.g. Air conditioning or a swimming pool were listed by the host but they are not actually available at the property).

The protections offered to guests through Airbnb’s Aircover are presented as unique and ground-breaking. Yet, they look like a nice repackaging of existing services that companies such as Booking.com have been offering for years (e.g., helping find a place for the guest should the host cancel). Now, better packaging protections, giving them a name (Aircover), and merchandising them well on the website (Aircover is mentioned high on every listing page) make up good product marketing work. If competitors have been doing the same but have done a bad job at saying so, travelers will indeed have the impression that what Airbnb is offering for free is new and superior in terms of booking protections.

On the guest side, Aircover is no insurance product. It is more the sum of a series of policies and procedures imposed on the host, especially the recently updated and much-contested rebooking and refunding policy.

Aircover is about guaranteeing that Airbnb will either find a new place or refund the guest (e.g., Check-In Guarantee: If a guest can’t check in to a place and the host isn’t able to resolve the issue, Airbnb will find the guest a similar or better home for the length of their original stay at Airbnb’s expense, or we’ll refund them.

To deliver on its promises to guests, Airbnb needed to set the equivalent expectations upon hosts . This is why the company had previously informed its hosts that it was updating its Rebooking and Refund Policy . For instance, it has made it plain and clear to hosts that they may have to refund guests should the host cancel a booking or the guest find that something crucial promised in the listing was actually missing from the property. You will notice that this is the exact mirror of the protections offered to guests, and it makes sense: The money refunded to guests through Aircover actually comes from hosts having to refund them according to the updated rebooking and refund policy. 

Why did Airbnb make its travel insurance a paid product, while Aircover for guests and Aircover for hosts are free?

If Airbnb were to offer free travel insurance, it would also have to pay an insurance premium to a professional insurer . Given the volume of Airbnb bookings, it would represent a lot of money and would dent Airbnb’s profitability.

First, Airbnb would not need to cover all its guests, as some already have their travel insurance. Also, unless a reservation is non-refundable, a guest may have a chance to get their money back by canceling their booking or asking their host for some flexibility. Hosts may not like to hear it, but, in a way, flexible cancellation policies are a form of travel insurance for guests.

Second, Airbnb seems to see travel insurance as a money-maker. After all, Vrbo has been flogging insurance products to guests and owners for years, probably making a lot of money from its insurance provider Generali.

  • In August 2021, during a quarterly earnings call, a financial analyst asked Airbnb leaders whether the take rate, currently at 15% on average, would increase in the future. The answers were quite interesting.
  • First, Airbnb mentioned, “opportunities (such as) guest travel insurance”. So, the take rate could increase from commissions on travel insurance that Airbnb would sell to guests.

Another reason why it could be a paid product for guests is Hopper’s success at selling its “cancel any time” and “price freeze” guarantees. It shows that consumers are ok to pay for an added service. Airbnb’s shareholders may be happy to hear that the company is trying to increase its margins, as Hopper is doing. With the launch of Hopper Homes, the competition between the two companies is increasing.

What’s the impact of Airbnb’s travel insurance on existing host cancellation policies?

There is no impact on a host’s cancellation polic y. If a guest cancels, they forfeit whatever money was due under the cancellation policy they had signed up for. The host gets to keep the deposit.

What the travel insurance brings about is that the guest can ask the insurance company to refund the money that the host has kept for themselves (as per the existing cancellation policy).

So, Airbnb has found a way to enforce host policies, while allowing guests to lower their risk through travel insurance. According to the company, if travelers who buy a policy cancel their booking for a covered reason, they’ll be able to file a claim to seek reimbursement for up to 100% of their non-refunded Airbnb booking cost. This may reduce the possibility of guests asking Hosts for a refund outside the terms of their Hosts’ cancellation policies.

The challenges of offering an insurance product on a global basis

When Airbnb first revealed that its $1,000,000 Host Guarantee had gone global ten years ago, the industry wondered how Airbnb had pulled it off. How can they have created and launched such an insurance product globally? The answer was that the company could, as this was no insurance. This was a guarantee, built on processes and tools such as the Resolution Center . In some iffy cases, Airbnb was probably also ready to spend some money of its own the solve the issue. So, no need to care about local insurance regulations across 130+ countries. No insurance, just a guarantee.

It is somewhat easier to roll out a liability insurance program for hosts ( as Booking.com just did ), as the risk is a bit more standard and as insurance companies have some existing products that can be used. This is why Aircover for Hosts has a real liability insurance product, while, on the damage protection side, Airbnb is still relying on the Resolution Center.

  • On March 30, 2020, during an emergency live stream held with Airbnb hosts in the thick of the COVID crisis, B rian Chesky announced that the company was working on travel insurance ,
  • In 2021, Airbnb discreetly launched its Travel Insurance page and started recommending guests purchased a travel insurance product at the end of its booking process. Airbnb here was merely redirecting travelers to third-party websites, such as the travel insurance aggregator InsureMyTrip in the US and insurance company Europ Assistance (part of the Generali Group) in Europe,
  • In August 2021, during a quarterly earnings call, Airbnb mentioned working on opportunities such as  “guest travel insurance”,
  • On January 2, Brian Chesky confirmed in a tweet that the company was working on guest travel insurance

Who are the insurance companies behind Airbnb’s travel insurance?

It is always hard to pull off global coverage, as insurance is really more like a series of national businesses due to local regulations . Airbnb had to create subsidiaries that deal with insurance on local or regional levels, such as Airbnb Insurance Agency LLC in the US and Airbnb UK Services Limited in the UK.

  • For guests in the EU, travel insurance is underwritten by Europ Assistance S.A., acting through its Irish Branch

Airbnb has been working on its guest travel insurance product for over two years and announced that it will be launching the product in Spring 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Airbnb to expedite the launch of this product. The company is launching its travel insurance as a paid product in 10 countries. More countries, at least within the European Union, should soon be covered.

Airbnb stacks this paid product on top of its free Aircover booking guarantees. This way, it wants to show that it is already offering a great level of protection but that money can buy guests something extra. It certainly does not hurt that insurance products have comfortable margins and that it is also a good move for Airbnb’s bottom line.

Travel can be expensive. Insurance protects your nonrefundable vacation investment if the unexpected occurs. But is travel insurance worth it?

The answer will depend on whether your trip is refundable, where you're going, whether you'll have health coverage at your destination and how much coverage you already get from your credit card. Here are some key topics to understand when deciding if travel insurance is right for you.

Travel insurance (or trip insurance) covers a number of travel-related risks, from flight cancellations to lost bags to medical emergencies.

You can buy policies that cover a single trip, multiple trips or a full year. You can buy an individual policy or one that covers your entire family. Incidents not covered by your travel insurance vary by policy and provider.

Pre-existing medical conditions are often excluded from coverage, meaning your benefits don't apply to claims related to that condition. Some policies cover pre-existing medical conditions if you meet certain criteria, for example if you purchased the policy within 14 days of paying for your trip and if you were well enough to travel when you booked your trip.

Plan on mountain-climbing or engaging in other dangerous activities on your trip? Many policies won't cover you if something goes wrong unless you buy a policy that specifically includes adventure sports. World Nomads travel insurance , for example, offers the Explorer plan, which includes coverage for cave diving, cliff jumping, heli-skiing and many other activities that are considered risky.

Other incidents excluded from a trip insurance policy may involve war, acts of terrorism and the use of alcohol, which can cause your injuries to be designated as "self-inflicted," or the use of drugs, which may be illegal.

If you want full flexibility to cancel your trip you'll need to find a policy that allows you to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) add-on. This additional benefit does exactly what the name implies and allows you to cancel your trip for any reason. Typically, you'll get around 75% of your prepaid nonrefundable trip expenses back, although exact timing and percentages vary by policy.

Travel insurance primarily covers two aspects of your trip — your nonrefundable reservations and your medical expenses while traveling.

If all of your reservations can be canceled without penalty, then trip cancellation or trip interruption coverage isn't necessary. But even if your trip isn't 100% refundable, insurance may not be necessary. For example, a cheap flight and hotel stay may not be worth covering, though you may still want to purchase travel insurance for medical situations.

Medical coverage typically is not necessary if you have a U.S.-based health insurance policy and you're traveling within the U.S. In those cases, you probably already have adequate coverage for illness or injury.

There are a few reasons that travel insurance can be worthwhile: to protect your nonrefundable trip costs, your luggage or your health.

When should you get trip cancellation and/or trip interruption insurance?

If you would lose the money you paid for your flights, accommodations, rental car, or activities if you had to cancel or go home early, travel insurance that specifically includes trip cancellation and trip interruption is probably a good idea. If your trip is canceled or interrupted for a covered reason, this protection will cover your reservations.

For example, if you're planning to travel to a destination that could have weather-related issues, like hurricanes in the Caribbean, travel insurance may protect your noncancelable reservations. Some policies also provide emergency evacuation to escape dangerous situations. However, if you try to purchase travel insurance after the storm poses a risk, the insurance probably will not protect you.

As Asda fights an equal pay claim from some staff (see 13.01 post), it has announced the launch of a new workplace savings account.

The benefit is exclusively for its 150,000 staff and the company has partnered with Wagestream to offer a 4.7% interest rate. 

Colleagues will be able to save in two ways - by either setting a fixed amount to be taken out of their regular pay packet and deposited straight into their savings account or by "rounding up", which will see their shift payments rounded to the nearest whole pound and the difference deposited into their accounts automatically.

There is a monthly limit of £1,000 and a total limit of £85,000.

What do the experts say?

We asked Savings Champion if the benefit was as good as it sounds, and co-founder Anna Bowes told us...

"On the face of it, this is a great initiative and the fact that the funds can be taken on payday will probably encourage more staff to take part. I always recommend that when savers open a regular savings account, they set up a direct debit to take the deposit on or just after payday, so that it makes it feel like an essential bill – but one that they will benefit from in the future."

She said the rate on offer (4.7%) is pretty decent, but those looking to save less than £1,000 may find better rates elsewhere.

"For example, the Principality Building Society is paying 8% AER on deposits of up to £200 a month, although this account has a term of six months only, so would require more intervention and admin, as you'd need to find a new home for the cash on maturity and start another savings account, which may put some people off!

"Anyone who already has or wants to open a current account with First Direct or the Co-op could earn 7% AER on maximum monthly deposits of £300 or £250 respectively. However, on a deposit of £300 a month, that is a difference of just £45.50 in gross annual interest – so not an enormous loss, especially if the Asda initiative actually encourages more people to save!"

Anna said Asda employees might wish to seek more details of how their money is protected before signing up. 

The Body Shop has been rescued from administration in a deal that could save more than a thousand jobs.

The beauty retailer has been acquired by a consortium led by the British cosmetics tycoon Mike Jatania.

It is currently understood there are no immediate plans to shut any of the 113 remaining UK stores.

In a statement, Aurea said the acquisition was its largest transaction to date and it would "steer the Body Shop's revival and reclaim its global leadership in the ethical beauty sector it pioneered".

The Body Shop was founded in 1976 by Dame Anita Roddick. Trading out of a small shop in Brighton, it made its name selling cruelty-free fairtrade products.

But it fell into administration in early February after previous forecasts for how much funding it would need to keep going proved too low. In the weeks that followed, administrators said hundreds of jobs would be lost and dozens of shops closed.

Ministers are not looking to soften the blow for 10 million pensioners who will no longer receive winter fuel payments, the prime minister's spokesman has said.

Ahead of a vote on Tuesday on the controversial decision to  limit winter fuel payments  to those on pension credit, the government is remaining steadfast despite growing opposition from Labour MPs, unions and charities.

Up until now, all pensioners received the payment to help with higher energy bills over the winter.

Following a cabinet meeting on Monday, Sir Keir Starmer's spokesman was asked if ministers discussed softening the impact for pensioners no longer eligible.

"Not at all," he said.

The average driver could save £50 per year on their car insurance premium if the 20mph speed limit were to be rolled out across the whole of the UK.

Insurance company esure says it would "proactively reduce policy prices" for its customers within three months of identifying a new 20mph zone.

Earlier this year, the company said it had seen a 20% reduction in car accident claims in Wales.

20mph became the default limit in Wales's built-up areas in September last year but was met with significant opposition.

A record-breaking petition on the Senedd's website calling for the policy to be scrapped was signed by more than 500,000 people.

The Welsh government has since updated its guidance for councils to exempt certain roads from the reduced speed limit, in an effort to get "the right speed on the right road".

In May, it was announced the speed limit on almost 4,000 of Glasgow's streets would be reduced to 20mph.

Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has said traffic speeds in England are "entirely up for local areas to decide".

Many parts of England have already changed the default speed limit on their roads.

Primark is losing more money to shoplifters than it spends on rates, its chief executive has said.

The company's billionaire boss, George Weston, said shoplifting had become "socially acceptable... with thieves facing no consequences".

Primark pays around £70m a year in business rates for its UK shops, but Mr Weston says the price of losses from theft now eclipses this.

Business rates are a tax on the occupation of a non-domestic property but have been criticised for allowing online retailers to have an advantage over their bricks-and-mortar counterparts.

He welcomed the home secretary's plans to scrap the £200 rule - which allows thieves to be charged with a summary-only offence if they steal goods worth less than £199.

A summary-only offence is less severe and is tried in a magistrates' court, with the court only able to impose a maximum jail term of up to six months (however, the offence is more likely to result in a community order, according to sentencing guidelines).

Primark has already reported that gloomy summer weather knocked sales by 3.1% - but it has also driven higher sales of autumn fashions, including the company's new collection with singer Rita Ora. 

It remains unclear what Labour's first budget next month will mean for pensions - with Chancellor Rachel Reeves refusing to rule out additional taxation.

The lack of detail has created speculation - and so experts at investment bank Saxo have provided us with quick answers to the top 10 most googled questions about pensions...

1. How will I find a lost pension?

If you're looking for a workplace pension, you can contact previous employers and get the information directly from them or many companies offer this service and track them down on your behalf. 

The government offers the Pension Tracing Service which, by using your employer's name or your information, can provide you with the details of their workplace pension provider. 

2. How much is the state pension?

The current full rate of the UK state pension is £221.20 per week, but this is dependent on how much National Insurance you've paid while working. 

To qualify, you'll need to have paid national insurance for 10 full years. 

If you're married and both of you have built up 35 qualifying years, this amount doubles to £442.40 a week, or £23,004 a year. 

3. When do pensions go up?

The state pension is increased on the first Monday on or after 6 April in line with whatever is highest out of inflation, average wage growth or 2.5%. In April 2024, the annual rise increased by more than 8.5%.

4. How much pension will I receive?

This depends on two main factors  - your NI contributions to make sure you receive the full state pension and whether you have a private pension (but there are more factors to consider as well). 

This private pension could be a Self-Invested Personal Pension that you've managed, or a workplace pension you and your employer have paid into while working. 

Other factors to consider are sector specific pension schemes (teachers' pension, NHS workers, military), how you draw down your pension and the tax implication, and your age. 

5.  Are pensions subject to inheritance tax?

Usually pensions are exempt from inheritance tax as most schemes are written as trusts, therefore they are valued separately from one's estate and not included in probate calculations - but there are exceptions: 

  • Continuing guarantee payments may be subject to IHT;
  • If a lump sum is paid from a value protected pension, the net of tax amount may be included in the estate; 
  • If the pension owner died after reaching 75, income tax may be payable.

6. Are pensions tax-free?

It depends on the amount you are withdrawing from your pension, as income from pensions is taxed like any other kind of income. You have a personal allowance (£12,570 for the 2024-25 tax year) which is tax-free. 

You then pay 20% tax on income between £12,571 to £50,270 and 40% for any more.

7.  How much money can you have in the bank on pension credit?

There is no upper limit on how much money you can have in the bank to receive pension credit, but if you have more than £10,000 in savings and investments, the amount you receive may be reduced.

8. How do I consolidate a pension? 

Pension consolidation means combining all (or some) of your pensions into one pot. 

If you have several employers over time you are likely going to have workplace pensions in different places. There are advantages and disadvantages to both so it is best to seek advice before combining your pension.

9. How much pension pot do I need for £2,000 per month?

Using a pension calculator, the minimum amount required would be £272,000 for a £24,000 annual drawdown.

However, this doesn't include a lump sum and other factors that will be personal for you. Speak to a professional to receive tailored advice for you. 

10. Will Labour tax pensions?

Pensions are already subject to tax. Regardless of how you withdraw your pension, 25% of your total pension pot will be tax-free and you'll pay tax on the rest as if it were income. 

Asda workers will stage demonstrations outside the start of an equal pay claim that will assess whether shop floor workers should be paid the same as warehouse staff.

The case (which is expected to last for up to three months) centres on the fact the predominately female retail workforce at the supermarket giant is paid up to £3.74 per hour less than the predominately male warehouse workforce.

Claimants in the case argue both jobs are of equal value to the company.

It is just the latest stage in a 12-year battle over equal pay by Asda retail workers - and if successful, the bill could run into billions of pounds.

Nadine Houghton, GMB National Officer, said: "Asda workers are making history. The result of this hearing will call time on the retailers undervaluing their predominantly women shop floor workers.  

"The entire retail sector has been built on the structural undervaluing of women's work - but GMB members are changing this."

It comes as the Employment Tribunal ruled in favour of Next workers in a similar case involving a dispute centred on different rates of pay between job roles. 

An Asda spokesperson said: "We fully respect the right of current and former colleagues to bring this case; however, we strongly reject any claim that Asda's pay rates are influenced by gender. 

"There are numerous different jobs within retail and within warehouses. We continue to defend these claims because retail and distribution are two different industry sectors that have their own distinct skill sets and pay structures."

German supermarket giant Aldi has repeated its commitment today to opening more stores as it reported record UK sales (this comes despite a falling market share). Pre-tax profits reached £536.7m for the 12 months to December - up from £152.6m a year earlier.

The oil price is just above a more than two-and-a-half-year low at $71.84 (£54.89). It dropped sharply on Friday afternoon amid news of a slowing US economy and weak Chinese demand.

The pound slipped below $1.31 for the first time in nearly a week. This is still high, but anyone who was on holiday in the US last week would have got more bang for their buck. Sterling is doing relatively well against the euro with £1 buying €1.1839.

Following the worst week of 2024, UK stocks have rebounded. The FTSE 100 index of the most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange rose 0.7% while the FTSE 250 was up 0.34%.

A £200 flight to the Caribbean sounds almost too good to be true, but for seasoned flight finder Katy Maclure, moments like this are just another (really great) day at the office.

Katy has worked for Jack's Flight Club for almost three years and spends her day researching cheap flights and finding deals - and she's given Sky News some of her best tips.

JFC was started in 2016 by Jack Sheldon. Jack had worked for a large data company but had a knack for finding budget airfares and, after spending time doing this for his friends and family, he decided to turn it into a business - first starting as a newsletter and then a website and company that employs a dozen people.

Katy was one of those. She began as a flight finder and now edits The Detour, the company's weekly travel inspiration.

She says one of the best ways to find a steal is to look at places you might never have thought to go.

"I knew I wanted to go to the Caribbean, and I knew it was expensive - then I saw these cheap flights to Martinique from Paris.

"And Paris is easy to get to, you can just jump on an EasyJet flight or take a train."

So, for just over £200, a train (and the cost of their Airbnb), she and a friend spent two weeks in the overseas French region situated in the eastern Caribbean Sea.

The trick, she says, is going off the beaten track. Last year, she spent £175 on a return trip to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

"It's like the Scottish Highlands, but more extreme," she says.

"We stayed in a yurt and it was absolutely phenomenal. It would be amazing for nature lovers - we did a trek into the mountains.

"And it wasn't just nomadic and wild, when we got to Bishkek, it was so modern."

JFC operates a two-tier system for members - you can sign up for free and, each week, a roundup of deals will land in your inbox. If you sign up for their paid tier (which costs around £48 a year) you'll get those emails more frequently.

What's the deal with error fares?

They're the golden goose of airfares, and they are quite literally what they say on the tin - someone made a mistake when putting the price into the system.

Among some great error fares found by JFC was a return flight from Manchester to New York City in the low £200s, and a return to Tanzania from the UK for just £280. That deal was so good that eight of the JFC team booked a trip.

When this happens, the JFC team scramble to get them into subscribers' inboxes as fast as possible, because they can be withdrawn at any time.

Airlines don't have to honour an error fare (they can just refund you), so Katy says it's worth waiting a few weeks before booking any accommodation, just in case - and the rules are slightly different for online travel agencies.

"We've heard many stories of online travelling agencies calling up afterwards or emailing after saying 'oh, sorry, that fare's no longer available, please provide your card details and we'll charge you X amount more'.

"So just be aware that you don't have to pay, that you're not obliged to pay, that you can back out if they try and charge you more."

Katy's top tips for discount travel

1. If you have a specific date and destination in mind, set up alerts on Google flights - you will then get an email when the price changes;

2. Have an idea in mind of what you are willing to pay. If you want a direct flight, it will cost more - as will baggage, so research what these will cost ahead of time to know if you are getting a good deal;

3. Be flexible. If you can't be flexible about the dates, be flexible about the destination.
