10 Cool Things to Do in Nuuk, Greenland

Nuuk is the largest city and the capital of Greenland, but by no means does that entail that this is a large place to visit. Far from it, this tiny capital is, in fact, one of the smallest capital cities in the world, with a population of just 17,000 residents by the best of estimates.

While big-city lovers might not find a huge array of attractions, restaurants, or hotels to occupy them, part of Nuuk’s real charm inherently lies in this local, peaceful, and quaint vibe that is hard to find, and that has been lost, elsewhere in the world.

Despite its small stature in comparison to the rest of the world, Nuuk is big in Greenland, being the site of government, museums, and the cultural and culinary heartland of this vast and icy island.

For a small place, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that are definitely many more things to in Nuuk than you would anticipate. Aside from being home to the bulk of Greenland’s museums, Nuuk is found in a beautiful location, surrounded by one of the densest collections of fjords in the world.

Greenland’s arctic wilderness is found just outside the city too, and there are many opportunities to explore this unique outdoor environment from the capital.

Here’s our guide to visiting the capital of Greenland, and to help you figure out what to do in Nuuk that suits your interests .

10 Best Things to do in Nuuk, Greenland

Table of Contents

Nuuk. Hanse Egede. Capital of Greenland

For such a small capital in one of the most remote locations in the world, there is a surprising array of things to do in Nuuk. From historic and cultural exhibitions in the local museums to the natural splendor and intense nature of the fjords and wilderness, a trip to Nuuk is an experience of living at the edge of the world.

1. The Greenland National Museum

Greenland National Museum

Any trip to Nuuk should begin with a walk around the country’s National Museum. This extraordinary museum covers the entire history of human habitation in Greenland. Telling an incredible story of hardship in one of the harshest environments in the world.

Alongside the failures and successes of different groups that have lived here, from early stone age hunter-gatherers to Vikings, Inuit, and Danish settlers.

It’s a real journey through thousands of years of Greenlandic history and culture and reveals insight into the turbulent and extreme ways of life that have been borne out of the isolation and fierce weather in the Arctic.

2. Nuuk Art Museum

The Greenlandic national costume.

Nuuk Art Museum is located in a former church in the heart of the Greenlandic capital. It’s a great look at local culture and artwork, with exhibitions that really highlight the wealth of artistic talent that is found on the island, both through past years and in a more modern sense.

3. Katuaq Cultural Centre

Kamiks a part of the Greenlandic National costume.

If you are still interested in learning more about the unique artistic and cultural scenes in Greenland’s capital after visiting the two museums above, then one of the best things to do in Nuuk is to visit the Katuaq Cultural Centre.

This is a wonderful space where exhibitions and performances are held, from international film festivals to music concerts. There is always something unique and interesting to see at Katuaq.

4. Whale Watching

Whale jumping out of the water on a tour of Nuuk Greenland

Whale Watching is one of the most popular tourist activities during the warmer summer months when these incredible marine mammals will be found out in the ocean and even in the fjords near the city. It’s an unmissable activity when visiting Nuuk in the right season.

5. Visit the Nuuk Fjords

David Stock Jr of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog exploring Nuuk Greenland

Nuuk sits on the banks of one of the world’s largest system of fjords. This extensive collection of waterways is a beautiful place to explore by boat, with towering, snow-capped peaks and spectacular icebergs waiting around every twist and turn.

As well as taking boat trips out into the fjords, there are countless opportunities to explore by land, hiking along the ridges, climbing the tall mountains and really getting into the outdoor spirit that the locals love.

6. Explore Greenland’s Wilderness

The city of Nuuk is just a small spot in the vast wilderness of Greenland. From Nuuk, it’s easy to head out into the surrounding country, where there are mountains, spectacular scenery, and even hardy wildlife to discover.

The best time for hiking is in the summer when trekking and camping are most definitely a favorite pastime for visitors and Greenlanders alike, while during the colder, icier months, you can explore the landscapes using dog sleds or snowmobiles.

7. The Hans Egede House

The Hans Egede House Nuuk Greenland

A visit to the Hans Egede House is one of the most historic things to do in Nuuk. This was the home of one of Nuuk’s first Danish settlers, Hans Egede, who built the house in 1728. It is the oldest surviving structure – not counting the ruins of previous Viking settlements – still standing in Greenland .

8. Marvel at the Northern Lights

Northern Lights over the city of Nuuk Greenland

Of course, being so far north, Nuuk is an exceptional place to visit if you are looking for the opportunity to watch the Northern Lights. While in the depths of winter, it may be possible to see this beautiful light show from the city, it’s best to get out into the wilderness, away from any light pollution, to truly experience the Northern Lights.

9. The Norse Ruins

Qaqortoq Greenland, Norse Ruins

Greenland has had a turbulent history that is much at the mercy of extraordinary climatic conditions. Many groups of settlers have tried and failed to survive here, including many early Norse and Viking warriors and farmers that tried to establish permanent settlements in the west of the island.

Many of the ruins of their farmsteads can be found around the fjords, testament to the trying nature of this harsh environment.

10. Try Authentic Greenlandic Food

Guide to Nuuk Greenland

Nuuk is a growing culinary scene, where local ingredients with both Scandinavian and Inuit origins are fused with international influences across the city. There are many great Greenlandic dishes to try, much of which revolve around the scarce meats and vegetables that could be fished, hunted, and grown in this harsh land.

Anything from whale and seal, to muskox or even Thai, Chinese and Italian can be found in Nuuk. There are even, of course, a few bars and craft beer breweries to enjoy in the evenings.

Nuuk, Greenland Travel Planning Tips

Where to stay in nuuk, greenland.

The cathedral in Nuuk - capital of Greenland

Nuuk has the best range of accommodation in Greenland, but still, being such a remote and small city, this range isn’t exactly huge in comparison to the rest of the western world.

A favorite amongst travelers looking for affordable, but clean and modern accommodation is the Greenland Escape, while those looking to splash out a little while on holiday in Nuuk may want to book into the Hotel Hans Egede , the largest and most famous hotel in the city, which is named for one of the first settlers.

There are also a number of cheaper hostels available for budget travelers and an increasing number of local apartments up for short terms rentals to visitors.

How to Travel to Nuuk, Greenland

Air Greenland Plane at Nuuk Greenland

Nuuk is found on the west coast of Greenland, in the southern region of what is the largest island in the world. Despite being Greenland’s main city, Nuuk isn’t exactly well connected in terms of transport infrastructure, which is a demonstration of the remote isolation and the extreme weather that this arctic location results in.

There is an international airport in Nuuk, however, there are only connections to Reykjavik in Iceland from here. The most popular flight route into the city is via the larger international airport, found north of Nuuk in the small town of Kangerlussuaq.

This is a place that was originally constructed as a US air force base and subsequently has retained an airstrip large enough to land large passenger jets. There are regular flights to Kangerlussuaq from both Iceland and Denmark and then regular connections onwards to Nuuk.

Nuuk’s airport is well connected domestically by Air Greenland and their small fleet of turboprop aircraft, so once you have arrived in the capital, it’s easy enough to catch a flight to elsewhere on the island.

Domestic air travel is the quickest form of transport, as due to the vast nature of the wilderness that encompasses Greenland, there are very few road connections, even to the capital city.

Nuuk’s harbor also means that it is becoming ever more popular as a stop on Arctic cruises, particularly in the warmer summer months when there is much less ice to navigate. There are also ferry connections to other towns along the west coast of Greenland.

Best Time to Visit Nuuk, Greenland

Nuuk capital of Greenland

Nuuk is best visited during the warmer summer months, like the rest of the year, given the city’s unusually northern location and proximity to the Arctic, there will inevitably be extremely cold and long days of darkness.

Remember, however, that even though it might be summer, temperatures are rarely better than warm, while at the same time, the sun rarely sets.

This perpetual sunlight during summer is in much contrast to the almost perpetual darkness during winter, creating an extreme seasonal cycle that many people may find to be an intriguing enough reason to visit the city on its own.

Greenland Expedition

10 days | surround yourself with greenland’s wild landscapes on an expedition away from the tourist tracks.

Traveller marvels and takes a photo at sunset on Disko Bay looking ta the Ilulissat Fjord on a trai in Greenland

Hike on glaciers, cruise through ice fjords and visit small settlements steeped in mythology on this Expedition to Greenland. Tourism in this area consists mostly of polar cruises, but this 10-day adventure takes you through the raw, wild landscapes mostly on foot. You’ll take small boats through ice bergs, learn about local monsters from a local storyteller and go on a hiking trip to a remote eco-lodge on Lyngmark Mountain. Experience the midnight sun (the sun never goes down here in summer!), go on walks and hikes to spectacular viewpoints and maybe even spot a whale or two! With time for optional sea kayaking and whale watching cruises and a local leader by your side every step of the way – this may be the Expedition of a lifetime!

Trip overview

  • Spend some time in Greenland’s breathtaking natural landscape on a glacier hike over two full days traversing the wild landscape, spending a night in a remote eco-lodge. Then, take a spectacular ferry ride through ice floes and icebergs (nicknamed the most beautiful boat ride in the world!).
  • Explore Greenland away from the tourist track of polar cruise ships and contribute to the sustainable tourism of a country seldom explored on foot.
  • Experience the midnight sun – this trip will only operate during Greenland’s summer, which means the sun never really sets! Make the most of this eerie phenomenon with optional sea kayaking, boat cruise or sailing adventures.
  • Learn about Greenlandic culture and mythology during a storytelling experience with a local and a kaffemik experience, where you’ll step into a local’s home to learn why coffee and cake is such an important practice.
  • Visit small settlements, seldom explored by curious travellers, and head to Disko Island – ‘like all of Greenland encapsulated in one island’ – to soak up the raw landscape of a land surrounded by ice.
  • You must have an excellent level of fitness and physical ability to take on this trip, as it includes multiple hikes – including your 2-day hiking exploration of Disko Island, where you’ll hike up to 4 hours on both days. Hiking poles are recommended and sturdy hiking boots are a must!
  • Flights to Greenland from Denmark and Iceland, as well as additional accommodation in Nuuk or Iluissat are in high demand over the summer months and availability is limited. We recommend checking what is available before requesting your trip and you will need to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Tikilluarit! Welcome to Greenland. Your adventure begins in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early, maybe wander the streets of the Old Nuuk neighbourhood and see the Hans Egede Church and Hans Egede statue, both named after the missionary who founded the settlement. History buffs will want to visit the national museum to view the famous Greenlandic mummies, too, which were found under a rock outcrop in 1972 by two brothers who were ptarmigan hunting. After your meeting, maybe head out for an optional welcome dinner with the group.

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Nuuk - Greenland National Museum & Archives
  • Nuuk - Puffin watching boat tour - DKK1095
  • Nuuk - Nuuk backcountry hiking tour (half day) from - DKK2600
  • Nuuk - Nuuk Art Museum - DKK30

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

This morning, take a leader-led walking tour of Nuuk. After you get your bearings and see some of the city’s sites, you’ll meet with a local storyteller to learn about Greenland’s mythology. Hear stories about the local legends and mythological creatures like the Mother of the Sea, the Mountain Walker, the Sun and Moon and many others. Your storyteller will also talk about their background and where their interest in monsters began. After, you’ll have a free afternoon – maybe take a short hike in the backcountry or take a boat tour through the city’s fjord. As it doesn’t get dark in the evenings, boat tours are a great way to spend an evening!

  • Nuuk - Greenland mythology with a local storyteller
  • Nuuk - Leader-led walking tour

This morning, you’ll catch a flight to Ilulissat, which literally translates to ‘iceberg’ and is home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ice Fjord. When you arrive, you’ll head out on a leader-led walking tour of the town. Learn about the history of the town, visit the port to learn about the local fishing industry and pass by a wooden church and history museum. Stop in at an artisan workshop to learn about the centuries-old bone carving tradition here and see some local artists at work making jewellery. Later, enjoy a kaffemik experience – step into a local’s home and get a feel for what it's like to live like a Greenlander, especially through the art of kaffemik! More than just coffee and cakes, this tradition of a hot drink and a sweet treat promotes community, connection and the enjoyment of life.

  • Nuuk - Flight to Ilulissat
  • Ilulissat - Guided walking tour
  • Ilulissat - Bone carving workshop visit
  • Ilulissat - Kaffemik experience

The luggage allowance for this flight will be max 20 kg. Your total travel time today will be approximately 2.5 hours.

Today you’ll head out on a daytrip and cruise to the Qasigiannguit settlement. Ilulissat sits at the mouth of the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier – a source of many of the icebergs in the North Atlantic – so this is the perfect spot for total iceberg exploration. During your tour of the city from the water, look out for seals and whales. Visit Greenland's oldest wooden house, built in 1734, enjoy lunch in a scenic spot and learn about the area’s cultural traditions. Maybe end the day at Hotel Arctic, having a drink in the bar or on the terrace overlooking the large icebergs in Disko Bay.

  • Ilulissat - Full day boat trip to Qasigiannguit settlement including lunch

Today, you’ll take a transfer to the port, then the ferry to Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island). The city and the island have the same name, which in Greenlandic means ‘the big island’. Pass by more icebergs – this may just be one of the most spectacular public ferry rides ever – along the way. When you arrive, take a guided walking tour with your leader to learn about the island’s history and what modern life is like above the polar circle. Qeqertarsuaq was founded in 1773 as a whaling station and today has about 850 inhabitants. The rest of the afternoon and evening is free – ask your leader where to grab the best local fare.

  • Ilulissat - Ferry to Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island)
  • Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Guided walking tour

Your total travel time today will be approximately 2.5 hours.

Today, you’ll take a full day hike from Qeqertarsuaq to Disko Mountain Lodge. The hiking trail may be challenging at times, but the raw scenery is incredibly beautiful and you’ll take several breaks along the way to soak up the volcanic mountain environment and the views over Disko Bay. On a clear day, you’ll see all the way to Ilulissat! Have lunch along the way, then end at your accommodation at Disko Mountain Lodge – a blue wooden cabin on top of Lyngmark Mountain. Cosy and comfortable despite its remote location, this lodge features panoramic views over the bay and the perfect opportunity to soak in the wilderness of your surroundings. Depending on the weather and the conditions on the glacier, your leader will organise some optional activities for this afternoon – maybe go hiking to Blaesedalen (windy valley) or the Apostle Mountain, hike on the glacier with snowshoes or hang out at the lodge playing games.

  • Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Hike to Lyngmark Glacier

Your hiking time today will be approximately 3-4 hours with an elevation gain of about 900 m.

We will be hiking uphill on uneven terrain and there are passages of rocks and scree. Sturdy hiking boots are a must, with hiking poles are strongly recommended. Please speak to your leader about the option of staying in Disko Bay tonight if you not feel your are physically able to complete this hike.

Our accommodation tonight is simple, dormitory style with bunk beds. There are no showers, charging points for devices, mobile reception or WiFi.

Today, fuel up on breakfast, then hike back to Qeqertarsuaq the same way you came. Disko Island is raw and wild, and its volcanic heritage has created a unique environment, unlike any other place in Greenland. Explore the basalt rock formations, lush vegetation, hot springs and black sand beaches along the way, soaking up the unique natural wonders and the immensity of the Lyngmark Glacier.

  • Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Hike from Lyngmark Glacier to Qeqertarsuaq
  • Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Siorasuit Black Sand Beach ice swimming & sauna - DKK200

Your total hiking time today will be approximately 3-4 hours. We follow the same route downhill as yesterday's hike.

This morning, take the ferry back to Ilulissat. When you arrive, enjoy a free afternoon to relax and recharge after a full two days of hiking. You could also take an optional sea-kayaking tour through the icebergs or go whale watching! You could also head out on an iIce fjord boat tour and cruise through the incredible landscape at a leisurely pace. During the months of the midnight sun (when the sun never completely sets), there is plenty to do to really soak up the magic of this remote location!

  • Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Ferry to Ilusissat
  • Ilulissat - Icefjord Cruise - DKK695
  • Ilulissat - Midnight Sun sailing - DKK840
  • Ilussisat - Evening kayaking among icebergs - DKK1350
  • Ilulissat - Whale watching tour - DKK1195

Visit the Icefjord Centre today for a journey into Greenlandic culture. Here, visit the permanent exhibition ‘Sermeq pillugu Oqaluttuaq – The Story of the Ice,’ and learn about the cycle of the ice and the abundant wildlife around the fjord. Head to the rooftop for a good view of the city, then take a walk along the wooden pathway to the fjord, to visit the Sermermiut settlement. This valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the ruins of ancient settlements that date back 4500 years. See another view of the icebergs from a viewpoint, then you’ll reach the shore of the ice fjord. Continue to Nakkaavik, which means ‘the place where you fall’. This name comes from a time when the elderly use to throw themselves down the cliff during famine – they sacrificed their lives for the younger people, so they could have enough food to continue and feed the new generations. Tonight, you’re free to take on any optional activities you didn’t get a chance to do yesterday. Or, head out for dinner with your group and celebrate an incredible adventure!

  • Ilulissat - Icefjord Centre entrance ticket
  • Ilulissat - Icefjord hike to Sermermiut settlement

With no further activities planned after breakfast, your trip comes to an end. If you’d like to extend your stay, it’s important to request any additional accommodation well in advance due to limited availability and high demand in the summer months.

While it may take a bit of work to get here, Greenland is worth it for dreamy landscapes like these. Shutterstock

Greenland is a real-life adventure playground where cultural exploration and wildlife watching are like nowhere else on Earth. Here there are towns with more sled dogs than people, scientists engaged in world-leading climate change research, streets where polar bears occasionally wander and welcoming local townships to visit. A visit here will reaffirm your love of the world and a sense of awe in nature; once you’ve been, there will always be a little chip of ice in your heart calling you back.

Day hikes take you to the edge of glaciers, boat tours weave amid icebergs under the midnight sun, dinners offer a taste of the edge of the world, and wildlife watching gives you new perspectives on whales, seabirds and bears. Some of the travel experiences here are intrepid – if that’s your vibe – but there’s plenty for soft adventurers too.

Travel in Greenland is highly seasonal. Summer's midnight sun gives you light all day and all night, allowing for extra hours of adventuring, fantastic photo opportunities (and the kind of light that makes every shot look exceptional), and nobody, not even nature, telling you when it’s time to go to bed. It’s not exactly warm – you could expect snow flurries and very cold winds from the north at any time in the summer months, depending on where you are – but the constant sunlight certainly helps. The summer is peak season and prices are at their pinnacle too. Note that it’s not possible to see the northern lights in summer; you’ll just have to come back when it's darker (the exact month depends on the region).

Step 1: Choose where to base yourself

Some things to know before you start planning: Greenland is vast, and you cannot do it all in one trip. You can’t just drive across Greenland, either: communities cluster around the edges of the country with no roads connecting them (there's an ice sheet in the middle of this large island), so you have to take a boat, a helicopter ride, a ferry or an internal flight to get from place to place. Instead, our advice is to focus on a single region during your trip, so you make the most of it instead of spending all your time and money traveling. Each of the regions of Greenland has a slightly different flavor and there’s something to delight you in all of them.

Place 1 - Ilulissat & North Greenland

Vibes: Greenland’s tourist capital, Ilulisaat, is a bustling hive of kayak tours, midnight sun iceberg cruises and inland icecap adventures during the summer months. Cruise ships arrive for day excursions, the town’s extraordinary number of sled dogs howl day and night, and the path to the beautiful Icefjord Center and its walkway down to the old settlement of Sermermiut is thronged with visitors.

Do: Take a day trip (or longer) to Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island), which is a couple of hours by ferry from Ilulisaat in Disko Bay. The former whaling capital is now an intimate town of colored houses on the edge of the bay with an indelible charm. To see the best of it, book a tour with local tour operator Disko Adventures , which offers snowmobiling and dog sled experiences on the glacier and guided hikes.

Eat: You are spoiled for choice in Ilulissat for high-end Greenlandic dining. Brasserie Ulo , housed at Hotel Arctic, is one of the town’s newest, and the likes of minke whale and halibut are on the menu; at Restaurant Icefiord , in Hotel Icefiord, you’ll find sea urchin and a blend of Nordic and French flavors. At  Hotel Hvide Falk , the restaurant adds Asian flair to the local fish and meat and serves a Greenlandic buffet. Offset the price of all this fine dining by ordering sandwiches at your hotel for lunch.

Stay: There’s plenty to choose from: take in uninterrupted views of icebergs and the ocean at the luxurious Aurora Cabins at Hotel Arctic on the edge of town, or opt for  guest house options and budget hotels like  Hotel Søma . Book well in advance, especially in the summer, and expect to pay upwards of 1200 kr (£136) per night for a basic double room.

Place 2 - Qaqortoq & South Greenland

Vibes: The south of Greenland offers green fields, Viking history, hiking and horse riding, fjord kayaking and farming communities. Artsy Qaqortoq is the jumping off point for most experiences. This part of Greenland is diverse: you'll find sheer-sided mountains that are a paradise for climbers, and an innovative greenhouse project tasked with growing the future of Greenland’s food.

Do: Take a boat trip from Qaqortoq to Uunartoq , a remote island with Greenland’s only hot spring pool. The pool on this island overlooks the fjord, icebergs and impossibly tall mountains, and was used for centuries before the Vikings came and enlarged it. Take in the view while thinking about all the people who have rested their muscles in the warm water here before you.

Eat: Inbox Cafe - A Little Thai Corner offers quite a unique experience in Qaqortoq: Thai food made with Greenlandic ingredients. Expect locally-caught red snapper or locally-hunted Musk Ox paired with Thai red curry instead of your usual beef or chicken. This part of Greenland is known for its lamb – the green pastures are home to a number of sheep farms – and it’s pretty delicious too.

Stay: Book well in advance and save up for a camping experience of a lifetime with Tasermiut Camp . Camping tours leave from the South Greenland town of Nanortalik and you’ll camp in Tasermiut fjord with an experienced team who can introduce you to hiking, fishing, herb picking and the wonders of Greenlandic nature. It’s a one-off with excellent guides with a deep passion for the area.

Place 3 - Nuuk & the Capital Region

Vibes: Greenland’s capital is home to just under 20,000 people – over a third of the entire population of Greenland – and is easy to reach and explore. It might be a city with fine dining, museums and cultural centers, but you can still enjoy nature from this cosmopolitan base with day hikes, whale watching and even skiing opportunities.

Do: Go stand-up paddleboarding around the icebergs. Clad in a dry suit, you can take a SUP into Nuuk Fjord and enjoy the peace and calm of nature in the area.  Nuuk Watertaxi is one of a number of operators in the town that offers guided tours; you can also explore the area by kayak and by boat. SUP tours are only available between May and September.

Eat: There are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes to choose from in Nuuk. At Katuaq Cultural Centre , a striking building in the center of the town, you’ll find a range of options, from burgers to Greenlandic tapas, typically small bites of seasonal local delicacies like prawns, mussels, smoked salmon and perhaps whale. They also serve delicious fresh snow crab and their classic "hot sled dog" – a local twist on a hot dog, made from gamey and rich musk ox meat. It’s worth checking out what else is going on in the center, which hosts music nights, cinema and exhibitions, among other things.

Stay: Leave the city behind and immerse yourself in Greenlandic nature at Camp Kangiusaq , one of a number of tented camps a few hours by boat from Nuuk. This one on Nuuk Fjord offers bell tents with a view of icebergs and mountains; on the way there, you might spy sea eagles, whales and seals. It’s a much more characterful accommodation option than Nuuk’s standard business-focused hotels.

Step 2: Book your accommodations

It pays to book your accommodation a number of months ahead – perhaps even a year ahead for the more specialist accommodation, which is limited and in high demand during peak season (June-August). Greenland’s small settlements often have limited capacity, and even in the larger, more tourist-oriented towns, accommodation can be booked out by tour groups well ahead of time.

Most towns offer a mix of hotels, independent cabins and private homestay options via Airbnb and Inuit Home , a locally-run homestay website. Hotels range from basic, former barracks buildings to comfortable and luxurious international-style hotels. In popular towns like Ilulisaat, it is not uncommon for every hotel room to be booked in July; last-minute booking is not usually possible and is certainly not advised. Visit Greenland has a nearly comprehensive list of options on its accommodation listings page .

Greenland has a growing specialist accommodation scene, with snow igloos, tented camps, wild lodges and more to discover. These options are not cheap by any means, but they provide once-in-a-lifetime experiences. If you want to see the northern lights, you'll need to stay north of the Arctic Circle between the months of September and May.

Step 3: Plan the best things to do in Greenland

You can get to Greenland on your own as an independent traveler – you don’t have to make this trip as part of a tour group – but booking excursions with a local tour operator gives you an insider perspective on the country that's well worth the effort. And on active outdoor adventures you'll likely need a little helping hand in this extreme environment. Another couple of things to note: the weather rules everything, so allow room for changing plans due to snow, wind, rain, etc. Seasonality also plays a part: it makes a difference which month of the year you arrive for whale watching, polar bear safaris and more, so do your research and book ahead.

Take a day trip

In North Greenland: This is the country that gave us the word kayak , so it’s churlish not to take a kayak tour – explore ice fjords, weave around icebergs and spot Northern Fulmars skimming the water as you go. Multiple tour operators in Ilulissat offer this option, including World of Greenland .

In South Greenland: Take a hike in Qassiarsuk and discover a UNESCO-listed landscape that encompasses Viking history (including the remains of Erik the Red’s home) and modern-day sheep farms, all with a view of an iceberg-littered fjord and sheep farmers as your hosts.  Blue Ice Explorer can help you get there.

From Nuuk: Summit Quassussuaq, a mountain outside Nuuk, with a local guide for epic views of the fjord and the ocean. Pack good hiking boots and snacks – this is a day-long excursion run by local tour operators Two Ravens , who also operate heliskiing and heli hiking options from Nuuk.

Go whale watching

With Greenland’s towns all on the coast, boat trips are everywhere, especially in the summer months. If you’re arriving in early summer, you might catch sight of one of the arctic whales (Bowhead, Beluga or Narwhal) before they move north; otherwise, you’re most likely to see a humpback, fin or minke whale in the clear, cold waters of the Arctic Ocean as they migrate to eat its abundant krill. Whale-watching tours usually take a couple of hours and are in small boats; some outfitters offer a free trip if you don’t see any. Wrap up warm.

Meet the sled dogs

Whether you take a dog sledding tour – on offer in towns like Ilulissat – or just join a local dog owner on a tour, meeting a Greenlandic sled dog is a memorable experience. In the summer, you’re most likely to find a brood of fluffy puppies too. Greenland’s sled dogs have two coats, live outside and eat a diet of mainly fish; note that they are not pets and you should never approach them, pet them or feed them.

Take lots of pictures

The midnight sun, combined with Greenland’s pollution-free air, makes the country a photographic paradise. Snap a pair of fluffy sled dog puppies rolling around on a dusty road. Hike the top of a mountain and take a panorama. Visit sea caves by boat and take shots of icebergs framed by the cave walls. Snap icebergs, again and again and again.

Explore Greenlandic culture

Discovering how life is lived on this most remote island, and spending time with local people, is one of the most rewarding experiences to find on a trip to Greenland. Take time to talk to local people - it’s illuminating! Visiting the country’s small local museums gives an intimate take on how hard life was in years gone by, with artifacts, art and information to tell you more. The Greenland National Museum in Nuuk is packed with stories about everything from the first people to the Vikings, wild expeditions and the whaling period in the country, and has some extraordinary mummies from the 15th century. In Ilulissat, there is both a city museum and the Icefjord Centre , which tells the story of the landscape and culture together.

A view of multicolored houses on the snow-covered shore of Nuuk, Greenland, with icy mountains in the background

Step 4: What to eat & drink in Greenland

In major tourist centers, international-style food is possible, but in many places around Greenland, options for vegan and vegetarian food are severely limited. It’s hard – near impossible – to grow much in the country, so nearly all fruit and vegetables are imported, and as a result, they are expensive. Local people forage for crowberries, bilberries and local herbs, but there are not many local veggies and berries beyond that. There’s a growing trend in the country towards local and traditional food which, while it can be challenging if you haven’t tried it before, reflects a very real need to eat food gathered from close to home, including the ocean and the mountains. It’s typical for local people to regularly hunt for their own food, and to have several large chest freezers at home for their catch. You’ll notice the lack of vegetables: diet here is largely meat and fish-based, and has helped people thrive in this extreme, calorie-demanding environment for centuries.

Greenlandic cuisine

A growing number of hotels and restaurants are proudly serving Greenlandic cuisine, which includes lamb, musk ox, halibut, arctic char, seal and even (sustainably hunted) whale, with great results. In Ilulissat, Hotel Arctic’s Brasserie Ulo serves everything from local fish to snow crab and minke whale; in Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island, Hotel Disko Island serves local Arctic food as a speciality, with a fantastic snow crab and lemon mayonnaise dish as the star of the menu. In Nuuk, drop in to gastropub Killut where you can wash down their platter of Greenlandic tapas with some locally-brewed beer.

Coffee, cakes and more

If you get a chance to go to a kaffemik , a family or local gathering a little akin to a celebratory coffee morning where everyone you know is invited, grab it with both hands. It gives you a chance to find out more about local food, traditions and culture, eat a lot of cake and hear a little about daily life in this remote part of the world. In Nuuk and Qaqortoq, it is possible to book a kaffemik experience via the local tourist office.

What to drink

If you find yourself at a bar, order the local beer. In Nuuk, Godthaab Bryghus has a variety on tap and offers brewery tours; there’s also Qajak microbrewery in South Greenland and Immiaq microbrewery in North Greenland.

Step 5: Decide how will you get there

From mainland Europe, the easiest way to get to Greenland is via Copenhagen, where direct Air Greenland flights fly to Kangerlussuaq and Narsasuaq and on from there to Nuuk, Ilulissat, Kulusuk and Constable Point. From North America, Air Greenland and Icelandair flights route through Reykjavik to the same destinations.

From late 2025, an extension at Nuuk's airport will allow larger planes to fly directly to the capital city, and it will become the main transit hub for the country, meaning travelers will fly to Nuuk and change for destinations in other parts of Greenland.

From 2026, an extended airport in Ilulissat will mean international flights can also fly there directly without the need to change at Nuuk.

Many cruise companies have Greenland on their itineraries, sailing from North America to Europe via the country.

The Arctic Umiaq Line is a local Greenlandic ferry serving the west coast that offers a unique and authentic way to travel up and down the coast and to remote settlements by boat. Used by local people, the ferry takes 14 days to go from Nuuk down to South Greenland and then via Nuuk again up to Uummannaq, north of Ilulissat. It’s a unique way to get off the beaten track and see smaller communities around the edge of the country.

There are very few cities in the world where you can access pristine backcountry wilderness within 5 minutes of the city center.

Welcome to Nuuk ! Greenland’s small but dynamic capital.

The center of Nuuk, Greenland - taken on a city tour at dusk. Pink skies and the mountain - Store Malene - in the background - Guide to Greenland

With a population of just under 18,500 people (2019), Nuuk is one of the smallest capital cities in the world. But don’t let that put you off! Along with abundant outdoor adventure opportunities, this modern city is a culture-lovers paradise with a thriving music and arts scene, outstanding gastronomy experiences, and fascinating museums (both indoor and open-air) that tell the story of Greenland’s history starting from its Inuit origins.

This  Ultimate Travel Guide to Nuuk  contains all the information you need to plan and get the most out of your visit to Nuuk – the northernmost capital city in the world.

Where is Nuuk?

“Nuuk” is the Greenlandic word for “cape” and is named for its position at the mouth of the Nuup Kangerlua Fjord (otherwise known as the Nuuk Fjord) – the second-largest fjord system in the world.  It is located on the southwest coast of Greenland about 240km south of the Arctic Circle and a little further north than Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

Surrounded by water and several impressive mountains, the city boasts many picture-perfect viewpoints for those who do not have the time or energy to head into the backcountry.  The dramatic Sermitsiaq mountain is a particular favorite – especially at sunset as the last of the sun’s rays illuminate the side facing towards Nuuk.

What is the best time to visit Nuuk?

Nuuk is a fantastic travel destination at any time of year.  The best time to visit really comes down to what you are looking to experience.

Winter and Spring in Nuuk

For those of you who are worried about how cold it will be to visit Nuuk during the winter, don’t be!

Although the temperature in Nuuk rarely makes it to positive figures and looks downright frigid, the low humidity means that it often feels far warmer than places like Copenhagen or Reykjavik, despite having lower temperatures.

  • Discover how to fly to Nuuk from Denmark and Iceland

You should think about visiting Nuuk during the Winter / Spring if you:

  • Want to experience the Northern Lights  – best months are from mid-September to mid-April
  • Enjoy  snow-based outdoor activities  such as alpine skiing, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing

There are also several festivals that run during the winter months in Nuuk.  Check their websites to see if they are running in any particular year:

  • January: Mitaartut – a Greenlandic tradition where disguised individuals go door to door “demanding” to be let in and receive gifts.  While it sounds like Halloween, it is actually much more impressive, as the idea is not to dress as a fictional character, but as the scariest and most unrecognizable creature possible!
  • March:  Nuuk Snow Festival  – where people carve sculptures of all shapes and sizes out of blocks of snow
  • March: Nuuk Multi Kulti  – a celebration of cultural diversity in Nuuk
  • May:  Maaji Nuan  (“Lovely May”) – a month-long initiative with loads of free or cheap sporting activities to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle

Summer and Fall / Autumn in Nuuk

For the rest of the year, temperatures in Nuuk can reach double (positive) figures but can also change very quickly.

There are a wide variety of activities available from Nuuk during the long days of summer, and you should consider visiting if you are interested in:

  • Exploring the Nuuk Fjord by boat
  • Hiking around Nuuk
  • Kayaking or stand up paddleboarding
  • Fishing in Nuuk fjord

Nuuk also has several key summer events including:

  • June 21 – Greenland National Day  celebrations with bonfires, choirs, and people in national dress
  • August/September:  Colourful Nuuk Marathon  – a very challenging city-based marathon
  • August/September:  Qooqqut Festival  – a small festival in the fjord that is family-friendly and a great outing with friends
  • September: Nuuk Food Festival  – a celebration of local produce
  • September/October:  Nuuk Nordisk Festival  – a week-long extravaganza of art and culture from across the Nordic region that is held every second year in Nuuk
  • October: Akisuanerit Festival  – a weekend music festival featuring both Greenlandic and international artists

What should I pack for a visit to Nuuk?

As you can imagine, what to pack for your trip depends on what season you are visiting and what activities you are planning to do.

Layers are the key to success and offer the most flexibility given the changeable weather of the Arctic. At the very least, you’ll want to bring a medium-warm sweater, a warm jacket, and warm headgear. Yes, also in summer. The summer nights can be quite cold, and it has happened before that snow has fallen in July!

Regardless of when you plan to visit, you should always follow the layering principle with your clothing. All buildings are heated to a comfortable temperature, but when you are out and about you need to be prepared.

Read our full article on the best clothing to pack for a trip to arctic Greenland , or watch the video versions here.

In all seasons, make sure you bring sunscreen. The sun can be very strong in the Summer and even in Winter it is easy to get sunburned when you spend the whole day outside enjoying nature. If you are visiting during Summer, it is also a very good idea to bring insect repellent and a head net – or buy them once you arrive.

  • Everything you wanted to know about Greenland mosquitoes

If you forget something

If you do forget something or discover that you have not brought sufficient layers, Nuuk has several shops that sell quality outdoor clothing. There are also stores (e.g. Ittu Net , Pikkori Sport, Nukka Greenland) that sell or hire more specialized outdoor equipment (tents, skis, snowshoes, bikes, etc), so you do not need to bring everything to Greenland with you.

In addition to your travel clothes, you may also like to pack a more stylish outfit given the large number of restaurants and the opportunity to take in cultural shows in the city. Alternatively, you could add to your wardrobe by purchasing an item from a Greenlandic designer at one of the many boutiques in the city. BTW during winter or on rainy days, it is perfectly normal to bring indoor shoes with you to a restaurant to change into once you arrive.

Electronics

Greenland uses the Standard European Plug (230 V) for its electrical outlets so make sure you pack at least one of these if your electronics come from elsewhere in the world.

Don’t forget your camera! Nuuk is spectacularly beautiful so you will regret it if you do! Also, if you are planning to photograph the Northern Lights, you will want to bring your own sturdy tripod if you have one.

Useful Apps

The Colourful Nuuk App (Android, iOS) is an offline overview of Nuuk in your pocket, with up-to-date listings of cafes and restaurants, the best places to shop, and upcoming events.

How do I get to Nuuk?

Nuuk would have to be one of – if not the – most remote and isolated capital cities in the world.  All roads stop only a few kilometers from town so arriving there is necessarily done by either plane or boat.

International flights to Nuuk

You can fly to Nuuk from either Iceland or Denmark.

Flights from Iceland are direct and can be booked with either  Air Greenland  (out of Keflavik International Airport) or  Air Iceland Connect  (Reykjavik Domestic Airport). Flights from Denmark are operated by  Air Greenland  and arrive at Nuuk via Kangerlussuaq.

In all cases, departures vary depending on the time of year, so best to check the schedule on our  how to get to Greenland page  to see which days each airline flies.

Domestic flights to Nuuk

If you are already planning to be in Greenland and want to add Nuuk to your itinerary,  Air Greenland  has flights to Nuuk from several towns including  Ilulissat ,  Sisimiut ,  Kangerlussuaq ,  Maniitsoq , Paamiut,  Narsarsuaq , and  Kulusuk . Not all towns have daily flights, so check the schedules at  Air Greenland  to figure out when you can fly.

Arriving by boat to Nuuk

If you are taking a cruise to Greenland, Nuuk is more than likely on your schedule. Although cruise ships typically dock for only 6-12 hours, if Nuuk is the first or last stop on your voyage it is worthwhile taking a few extra days to explore the capital and its surroundings.

If you are coming from elsewhere in West or South Greenland, there is a sea-bound alternative to flying. The  Sarfaq Ittuk Ferry , operated by the Arctic Umiaq Line, docks in Nuuk twice per week as it shuttles passengers between  Qaqortoq  in the South and  Ilulissat  in the North. The exact schedule depends on the time of year, so check their  schedule  to plan your itinerary.

How do I get around Nuuk?

Once you have arrived in Nuuk, it is very easy to get around independently.

Walking around Nuuk

The city is sufficiently small that is possible to walk the entire town. While the center of Nuuk is reasonably flat, once you venture outside of the main downtown area, you’ll soon discover that Nuuk is quite hilly!

You can follow the roads (cars generally do give way to pedestrians!) but even better is to choose your own adventure through the colorful houses and apartment buildings that contribute to the moniker “Colourful Nuuk”.  If you choose this option, be prepared for a good stair workout! Also, be careful of icy patches if there is snow.

Biking around Nuuk

If you are visiting during the warmer months, hiring a bike gives you an alternative way to explore the surroundings… well, as far as the roads go anyway.

Nuuk’s Buses

You can get almost anywhere in Nuuk on its modern bus system –  Nuup Bussii  – and it is surprisingly cheap!

You can purchase a single ticket on board using cash or, if you are going to be in town for longer, a voucher from one of the kiosks around town. Details in English can be found on the website, and timetables are published online and at each bus stop.

Nuuk has several taxi companies and, as one might expect, they are the most expensive way to get around town. However, if you need to catch a flight or be somewhere at a specific time, they are the most convenient. Beware of peak periods around 8 am and 18 pm, when you may have to wait for some time.

Nuuk is one of a handful of places in Greenland where it is possible to rent a car. If you are in town on business or need to move around the city a lot, renting a car is definitely worthwhile.

Water-based Taxis

If you want to explore further than the road extends, you will need to go via water-based taxis. There are several different types of the boat (open, cabins for 6, cabins for 12), and several providers to choose from.  All of them offer  tours of the Nuuk Fjord, or charters  if you would prefer to create your own itinerary.

Things to do in Nuuk

Nuuk is a unique capital city in that you can be enjoying a cultural activity one minute, and exploring the backcountry 5 minutes later. Despite its small size, there is no shortage of things to do, and you will have no trouble at all finding activities to suit your interests for several days. Here are some suggestions:

Explore the city

Guided city tours are a great way to get your bearings when you arrive and to learn a little about the history and development of Nuuk. Explore the center on foot, join a driving tour that will also introduce you to different suburbs, or head out on a photo tour with a professional photographer if you want to take the best images possible.

Cultural experiences

The  Greenland National Museum and Archives  provides an in-depth look at the cultural history of Greenland starting from 4,500 years ago, and the  Nuuk Local Museum  offers a glimpse into the past of Greenland’s relatively young capital.

The  Nuuk Art Museum  has both permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as an extensive collection of carvings from all over Greenland. You can also download and follow their  Nuuk Art Walk , which guides you past 19 different art installations around the city.

Make sure you call in at  Katuaq  – Nuuk’s cultural center – to check for performance. If not, there is always the option to take in a movie at Nuuk’s large cinema (most movies are shown in original language).

Shopping & and a scenic helicopter flight

Don’t forget the shopping! In the Colonial Harbour, the main pedestrian mall of Nuuk (Imaneq), and Tuapannguit (the street that lies between the mall and the Harbour along the ridge), you will find souvenir shops and a number of boutiques, some of which stock Greenlandic designers.

Take time and visit Inuit Artist workshop -Ajagaq , there you can see how different souvenirs are made and also purchase them directly from the artist (there is no option to pay by card so bring cash).

The best selection of books about Greenland can be found at  Atuagkat bookstore  (change the language option at the top), and  Atlantic Music Shop  is the place for Greenlandic music (the best music you’ve never heard of).

Finally, get a bird’s eye view of Nuuk with a  scenic flight  over the area. You can even make it more adventurous by landing on one of the tallest peaks!

Explore the Nuuk Fjord

Venturing up the world’s second-biggest fjord system is the “must do” activity. Depending on your specific interests, there is a wide range of tours available.

A general fjord tour is all about enjoying the scenery and typically includes Sermitsiaq mountain’s impressive waterfall. On full-day excursions, you can also visit the Narsap Sermia glacier at the end of the fjord.

If you enjoy  fishing , there are options to tailor your fjord excursion around this activity. Or, if you prefer to eat – look for the experiences where any fish you catch are cooked for you by the professional chefs at Qooqqut Nuan up in the fjord!

Alternatively, you could choose a tour to explore one of Nuuk Fjord’s abandoned settlements at Qoornoq or Kangeq, or experience daily life in a small, remote settlement at Kapisillit.

Witness the Northern Lights

If you visit Nuuk between September and April, you have a great chance to see the incredible Northern Lights. Although they are often visible from the center of Nuuk (the advantage of being in a small city), they are even better if you head to the  outskirts of town, take a Northern Lights cruise , or spend at least one night further up in the Nuuk Fjord.

Make sure you bring warm clothes and sign up for the  photography tour  if you want to learn how to capture the best images from a professional photographer. You can also read our  Guide to the Northern Lights in Greenland .

Outdoor Adventure

While fjord tours offer a relaxed and gentle way to experience the natural beauty of the Nuuk area, if you would prefer to do so in a more active way, there are plenty of other options.  In particular, the two mountains that border Nuuk – Lille Malene (Quassussuaq) and Store Malene (Ukkusissat) – offer easily accessible outdoor adventure opportunities.

Winter and Spring

If you are visiting during  Winter and Spring , the small ski resort  Sisorarfiit – Nuuk  is located just on the outskirts of town and offers two decent runs for experienced skiers (the longest being around 800m) and 3 lifts.  The snow is almost always powder or hard-packed (very rarely slushy) and the views are stunning!

If cross-country skiing is more your thing, join one of the trails that run from in town to the outskirts.  You’ll likely find kids on skis or sleds, and people walking dogs mingling with more serious skiers, some of which are Olympic class.  During the season, the trails are groomed daily and offer views of the colorful suburban houses as well as breathtaking vistas of the fjord and Sermitsiaq mountain.

If you want to do a multi-day ski trip, you should look to bring your own gear. For single-day use, you can hire snowboards and both downhill and cross-country skis from Sisorarfiit-Nuuk.

Snowshoeing to the top of Lille Malene is another amazing experience, giving you a decent workout and a bird’s eye view of the Nuuk area. There are several  snowshoeing tours  available and no prior experience is required.

Summer and Fall / Autumn

During the  Summer and Fall / Autumn  months, replace the snowshoes with hiking boots for short hikes along the fjord or  guided day hikes to nearby mountains .

For experienced trekkers that are self-sufficient and want to explore the Nuuk fjord on foot, pick up a copy of “Trekking Around Nuuk” at  Atuagkat bookstore . If you want to do many of these hikes,  you will need to  hire a private boat charter  to take you to where you want to go and pick you up again.

For those who prefer to be out on the water, you can go  kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding  (SUP) near Nuuk.

Airbnb  has also taken off in Nuuk and there are many listings available.  Options range from single rooms to entire apartments.

There are many amazing cafes and restaurants to choose from.  Most are located at the Colonial Harbour, the main pedestrian mall, or in the main street of Aqqusinersuaq and are easily discovered by simply wandering around.

There is a real focus on Greenlandic produce at many of these establishments and several offer a taste of modern Greenlandic Cuisine.

Nightlife in Nuuk – where to go out

If you want to hit the town after a big day of exploring, you’ll be pleased to know there are a variety of options available to you, depending on your mood.

  • Skyline Bar  at the top of Hotel Hans Egede is a sophisticated night out with cocktails and live piano
  • Godthaab Bryghus  is one of several places to go for Greenlandic beer and live music
  • Daddys  is a very chill and popular hangout that is generally packed on Fridays and Saturdays.  A great place for beer and playing pool
  • Takuss  has a strong local feeling with lots of Greenlandic music and occasionally even people dancing Greenlandic polka.  It also has the cheapest beer in town, table football, live music on Fridays and Saturdays, and karaoke on Thursdays
  • Kristinemut  also often features Greenlandic bands and karaoke on Thursdays

Note that all nightclubs and bars in Nuuk close at 3 am on Fridays and Saturdays and it is almost impossible to get a taxi for the next hour as locals head to an ‘after party’ or perhaps home.

As Greenland’s capital city, Nuuk has an abundance of souvenir shops. Anori Art has a wide range of items and can be found in the Nuuk Centre and another location overlooking the Colonial Harbour. However, we do also encourage you to seek out the more specialized shops around town, including:

  • Qiviut – muskox wool and sealskin products
  • Dooit Design – glassware
