The group all but created the blueprint for the roots movement that would dominate reggae in the mid-1970s.
Published on
Musically well ahead of its time, The Abyssinians’ “Satta Amassa Ganna” undertook a winding path towards becoming one of reggae’s greatest cultural anthems. Originally recorded in 1969 for Coxsone Dodd ’s Studio One as a compositional cousin to Carlton & His Shoes’ rocksteady single “Happy Land,” this devotional hymn to Jah Rastafari and repatriation to Africa (half sung in the ancient Ethiopian language of Amharic) all but created the blueprint for the roots movement that would dominate reggae in the mid-1970s: a haunting minor key rhythm, stunning group vocals, and a spirituality that spoke directly to the sufferation experienced by a significant swath of its listenership.
The song also represented a pivot point for the island’s music industry – away from an old guard out of touch with the genre’s growing dread concerns and towards an independence that could more readily accommodate this evolution. Unable to grasp “Satta Amassa Ganna”’s commercial potential, Coxsone shelved the recording; it would only see release two years later, once the group was able to buy back the master tape and put it out themselves on their own label (to significant sales and acclaim). A series of similarly sublime self-released singles further enhanced the reputation of the trio – lead singer Bernard Collins, and brothers Donald and Linford Manning – as roots progenitors. In 1976 The Abyssinians, at last, released their debut LP showing themselves fully in sync with the movement they helped pioneer.

Featuring a number of re-recordings of their early songs alongside new material of equal merit, Satta Massagana is an essential standard-bearer for 70s reggae. And though the more polished updates of such classics as “Declaration of Rights,” “Y Mas Gan,” and “Satta Amassa Gana” lack the lo-fi grit that made the originals resonate so strongly, there’s no denying the sterling work of the all-star cast of supporting players assembled here – among them drummers Sly Dunbar , Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, and Mikey “Boo” Richards; bassist Robbie Shakespeare ; guitarists Mikey Chung and Earl “Chinna” Smith; and producer/instrumentalist Clive Hunt. Meanwhile the trio’s vocals are imbued with the gravitas intrinsic to conveying the pride of ancestral African heritages, the anguish of the violence inflicted on those heritages, and the appeals for brotherhood and unity as explored in their lyrics. They express these themes with a distinctively mournful beauty, vocalizing prayers on the solemn “The Good Lord,” Biblical references on the righteous “Abendigo,” and hopeful exhortations on the lovely “Forward Unto Zion” and “I and I.”
“African Race” may be the most affecting. Commencing quietly with a striking arrangement of acoustic guitar and electric keyboard, it builds to an indelible refrain: “We are the slave descendants from the African race/Where proud is no disgrace.” Despite the album’s creative triumphs, The Abyssinians would break-up and re-form in various iterations over the years. Recalling their journey in 1993, Donald Manning succinctly observed, “When you listen to the songs, it show you that we were doing spiritual work.” Through it all, Satta Massagana remains a stirring testament to their creative commitment.

The Abyssinians ft. Bernard Collins
Music and singing were always around Bernard Collins in his childhood. His mother Ethel Parkes used to teach piano lessons. While growing up in Riversdale Jamaica he had the company of hot r & b music on the radio at nights and he had religious music at the Seventh Day church attended by his family.
By the time Bernard moved to Kingston in the early 60’s he was “one hot crooner”. While scatting with friends such as Douglas Whittingham and George Henry at their homes on Bob Marley’s White Road in Trench Town, that Collins started to perfect what was to become one of reggae’s most recognized and valued voices. With the support and guidance of other luminaries such as Leroy Sibbles, Bernard carefully developed his experience at crafting musical works. “Girl I’m Gonna Dance Tonight” was one of his early efforts.
After a stint at the Chestervale Youth Camp as a radio technician, Bernard returned to Kingston with a renewed taste for singing. In this time Bernard met Donald Manning and started a musical friendship in which they worked on music together with Mannings strumming the guitar and Bernard singing at the stables by the horse race track.
Bernard’s admiration and love of his African heritage led to his participation in an outpost of the Ethiopian Orthodox church. He learned about the glories and majesty represented by centuries of Ethiopian church history. In the same “church” yard one night in 1969 Bernard Collins and Donald Manning drafted the blueprint of a song that would launch them into the canon of reggae greats. The song they were nurturing was recorded and went on to become reggae’s most popular song of all time – Satta Massagana. Satta Massagana quickly gained momentum as an anthem traveling from the radio airwaves to the churches of Jamaica.
With this song Bernard and Donald felt the power inherent in their efforts, and along with a young third vocalist the newly formed Abyssinians sallied forth into the turbulence of Kingston’s music scene. In 1969 the new lineup approached the producer Clement “Coxsone” Dodd. Dodd had produced “Happy Land” and he agreed to record the trio. At first Dodd was unhappy with session’s outcome. In his opinion, the Jamaican record-buying public would have little if any interest in the Abyssinians revolutionary Rastafarian themes. Reggae was still a relatively new genre, and in its early days, it was brightly upbeat, yet the trio had slowed the beat down and smothered it in plaintive melodies in a minor key. Who in their right mind would buy such music? Who, indeed?
The answer came in 1971 when the Abyssinians bought back its tape (for a ludicrously inflated sum), and released “Satta Massa Gana” as a single on their own Clinch label. The song’s deeply devotional message, its dreams of far-away Africa, its throbbing rhythm, and its melancholy melody struck a chord across the island, and the song was an instant classic. A label battle between Clinch and Dodd’s Studio One label was now sparked. Belatedly realizing what he’d let slip away, Dodd quickly released “Satta Massa Gana” himself, backed with “Jerusalem,” admittedly in very limited quantities. A rush of DJ versions inevitably followed. Dodd released two instrumental versions, “Night in Ethiopia” by pianist Jackie Mittu and “Cool It” by saxophonist Tommy McCook. The latter recorded another instrumental version for Clinch, “Mandella,” while the label also put out several DJ versions, including two by Big Youth and one by Dillinger. Other DJs soon followed suit, but the most innovative was the Abyssinians own toasting take, “Mabrak,” on which the Abyssinians recited passages from the Bible in Amharic.
The Abyssinians released three further hit singles in 1971. The first was “Declaration of Rights,” and never has a call to revolution sounded so sweet and heartfelt. The equally evocative “Jerusalem” also appeared in 1971, and completing a quartet of hits for the year was “Let My Days Be Long.” Over the next few years, the trio continued releasing excellent singles, both on Clinch, as well as recording for other producers. However, in a musical scene renowned for its prolific output, the Abyssinians recordings were now to come few and far between, at least by Jamaican standards. But what records they were: 1972’s “Leggo Beast,” a simmering blend of deep roots and soul, and the deeply religious “Yim Mas Gan,” excellently produced by Lloyd “Matador” Daly were some of the more notable singles released.
The trio finally cut its debut album, Forward Unto Zion, in 1976, with producer Clive Hunt. Including hits, re-recordings of older classics, and new material, the record remains a roots masterpiece and brought the group great international acclaim. Their follow-up album, Arise, was released in 1978 through a deal with Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong label. Arise brought the hit single “Hey You”. The Abyssinians went on to release several albums and singles with Bernard’s lead vocals anchoring their most memorable songs such as Forward On To Zion, Declaration Of Rights, This Land, Wicked Men and Know Jah Today. In the late ’80s, Collins resurrected a new Abyssinians and released two singles, “African Princess” and “Swing Low,” on the Clinch label.
in 1993 the Heartbeat label released an excellent best-of album, Satta Massagana. France’s Music Disc considerately gathered up non-Clinch material for The Best of the Abyssinians the following year. Two sublime dub sets, Tabou’s Satta Dub and Heartbeat’s Declaration of Dub, appeared in 1998. The Abyssinians promptly released a new album, Reunion, the same year, which featured Mannings and Collins indeed reunited. However, it was a short-lived reconciliation and the next year Collins, with a new lineup released The Last Days, credited to Bernard Collins and the Abyssinians.
In the early 90’s Bernard reunited with childhood friends George Henry and Melvin Trusty. In 1994 Bernard fronted this trio on trips to Japan, Europe and the UK. where their performances were greatly applauded and appreciated. The Abyssinians, fronted by Bernard Collins, are one of the most spiritual reggae acts available and one of the greatest reggae acts in the history of Jamaican music. Their music spreads a message of faith, peace and love all over the world. Their catalog is moderate in quantity but their music has made a great impact.
The Abyssinians
About the abyssinians.
The Abyssinians are better known for their trio unique harmony roots and spiritual music. It is even said that Satta Massagana is the anthem for reggae music. After a string of hits, like Declaration of Rights, Forward unto Zion, Ymassgan African race and many more, the group never quite managed to break into the mainstream, although they seemed poised for international stardom during the early ’70s/and ’80s. The singers were all born in Kingston, Jamaica, the original member names are Donald and Linford Manning, and Bernard Collins. The group was form in 1969. Then they recorded Satta Massagana at Coxson Dodd’s Studio 1 and self released on their Clinch Label.
The Abyssinians’ first full album was recorded in 1976 and is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of Jamaican music. The sessions were supervised by Clive Hunt and resulted in the album known both as Forward Onto Zion and Satta Massagana. Every track exudes the spiritual essence of the Abyssinians. Regrettably, the tapes were pirated, and the album didn’t see legitimate release until Heartbeat (US) and Blue Moon (France) released it in the mid-90s. The group’s deeply spiritual, africentric lyrics were crystallized on virtually every cut on the album, and it featured remakes of “Satta,” “Declaration of Rights,” and “Y Mas Gan.” Donald Manning’s masterpiece “African Race” is one of The Abyssinians were inactive during the mid-80s, because Linford Manning left Jamaica in 1980, and Donald left in 1984. Bernard Collins went to New York in 1986 to work on an album at Phillip Smart’s HC&F studio on Long Island. Many of those tracks would be used for the Last Days album. The Abyssinians would play Sunsplash in Jamaica in 1989 and in Europe in 1990, and then Linford Manning left the group for good. The group performed again on Sunsplash 92 in Montego Bay.
The group separated in 1980 and reconnected in 1989 joining together again and recorded a album over a three year period named $19.95+Tax. Limited copies were printed and the same album was re-released on the Artist Only Record Label by the name REUNION, the three original member of the Abyssinians began to do their promotional tour. They worked together until 1991 where the group have made their split again for the second time when Bernard Collins start to sing with two of his close friends, Donald Manning start to sing with his brother Carlton Manning and David Morrison which they have toured internationally. Carlton Manning had played a key role in mentoring the Abyssinians during the early years. Not only did Carlton Manning coach the trio in the minor chord harmony singing that would define its style, but he taught Donald to play the guitar. Donald Manning recalls his brother’s efforts. “Most of the harmony that we sing, Carlton teach us, because me and Bernard was singing together and Carlton told me that because I was playing the guitar, Bernard will sing [more] leads than I do . . . so I must sing the harmony.”
In 1993, Heartbeat Records reissued Satta Massagana (a.k.a. Forward Onto Zion),. “Satta Massagana,” has been referred to as “reggae’s national anthem.” The Recording session that yielded “Satta” was arranged and financed independently and clearly marked a turning point for reggae — lyrically, rhythmically, and spiritually.
“Satta Massagana” (meaning ‘give thanks’) is obviously notable for its use of Amharic, the language of Ethiopia (Abyssinia). The Amharic is a result of Donald Manning’s Rastafarian influence on the group. The study of Amharic in Kingston in the 60s was a function of the post-colonial, Pan-African identity and Rastafarian awareness sweeping the ghetto after Haile Selassie’s 1966 visit to the island. Collins recalls how Donald’s brother Neville used to teach Amharic in the Jonestown area of Kingston. “[He] was a man who used to . . . have classes around there, where we could all go and learn the language, cause he used to get books from Ethiopia through England — Ethiopian opinions. And those books contain all literatures that we need . . . That’s how come we get acquainted with the Amharic . . . Brethren from all about used to come there and learn.” Donald Manning explains the Amharic in some of the group’s well-known compositions. “Tena Yi Stillin. DinaIgzhabhier Y Mas Gan. Satta Massagana.’ When I say ‘Dina’ means ‘good,’ ‘Igzhabier’ means ‘God,’ ‘Y Mas Gan,’ [means] ‘he may be praised,’ so I correct the mistake that I made by singing ‘Satta Massagana’ [to God]. ‘Tena Yi Stillin’ means ‘greetings.’ It means ‘good morning.’ It means ‘good bye.’ It means ‘good afternoon.’ It means ‘health, may He give for thee.’”
During the 90s, the Forward album was released on CD (Music disc), as well as set called Best Of (Music disc), which features many hard to find singles from the early years of the group. Satta Dub (TABOU.1) and Declaration of Dub (Heartbeat) feature Karl Pitterson dub mixes of many tracks from the Clive Hunt sessions alongside other selected dubs. Virgin reissued Arise on CD in the early 90s.
In 2004, Donald Manning and Bernard Collins re-united with David Morrison, steadily touring Europe, the US and South America throughout the the 2010’s right up to The Pandemic. In 2023, The Abyssinians will be actively on tour, starting March 24 through April 1 in the UK followed by a cross country US Summer Tour with an appearance along with Rebelution on Saturday August 19 at Reggae On The Rocks — Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado.
Donald Manning will be joined with Everton Pessoa and George Henry. Unfortunately both Bernard and David are unable to travel due to health issues.
